In this work a bridge is built between a neural model studied in a series of papers (cf. Ouztöreli 1979; Ouztöreli et al. 1987) and certain experimental laws of psychophysics and neurophysiology (Hartline 1942; Fechner 1860; Stevens 1961).This project was patially supported by Grant A4345 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada  相似文献

In the present work a linear model for a pair of antogonistic muscles is analysed. Each constituent muscle in this model is identical to ones considered previously (Stein and Ouztöreli, 1976). Analytical properties of the antagonistic muscles and dynamics of the system are described and some numerical results are discussed. The natural modes of the system are determined by a fourth order polynomial, which most commonly has one pair of conjugate complex roots and two negative real roots. The filtering of neural inputs through the active state properties of the muscle increases the order of the system to fifth order for these inputs. This work was partly supported by the National Scientific and Engineering Research Council of Canada Grant NRC-A4345 and by the Medical Research Council of Canada Grant MRC-MT-3307 through the University of Alberta  相似文献

In a recent work (Ouztöreli, 1980) a mathematical model for studying the neural activities in a vertebrate retina has been investigated, where the basic network contains five interconnected neurons: a receptor cell, a bipolar cell, a horizontal cell, an amacrine cell, and a retinal ganglion cell. More recently, in (Ouztöreli and O'Mara, 1980) the basic network has been extended to a larger network containing twelve neurons. In both of these works, the performances of the basic and extended models were discussed under different structural and processing conditions with constant inputs by using the results of one of our earlier work (Ouztöreli, 1979). In the present paper we investigate by simulations the responses of the basic retinal network to piecewise constant and periodic inputs. The step and frequency responses of the extended retinal network will be discussed in a forthcoming paper. This work was partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under Grant A-4345 through the University of alberta  相似文献

Summary A model of mammalian neuro-muscular systems described previously (Ouztöreli and Stein, 1975) has been extended to include multiple reflex pathways, as have been shown to exist in primates, including man (Milner-Brown et al., 1975). A number of general mathematical properties of the extended system are described. In the final section, using computer solutions, it is shown that the presence of multiple reflex pathways can effectively reduce the tendency for oscillation which will exist if high reflex gain were concentrated in a single pathway. High loop gain is desirable for good control in any negative feedback system, so the presence of multiple reflex pathways could improve reflex control, while limiting the magnitude of tremor or other unwanted oscillations in neuromuscular systems. This work was partly supported by the National Research Council of Canada (Grant NRC-A4345) and by the Medical Research Council of Canada (Grant MRC-MA 3307) through the University of Alberta.  相似文献

In this paper we consider some classical control theoretic properties of a nonlinear neural network proposed by Ouztöreli (1979) to represent the activities of constiuent neurones in terms of the input signals and coupling (associative) properties. By breaking the network into linear and nonlinear components we have been able to localize the nonlinearities in the individual neural response latencies through the system. This work was partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada by Grant NSERC-A 4345 to M.N.O. and Grant NSERC-A 2568 to T.M.C. through the University of Alberta  相似文献

In this paper we examine how a large array of neurons, and their associated neural circuitry, may determine known receptive field profile types and some well-known visual phenomena including Mach bands, edge enhancement, and visual masking of one signal by another. The neural model has a spatio-temporal structure and is described by a nonlinear integropartial differential difference equation with an isotropic Gabor kernel — a Gaussian apertured cosine modulation. Several simulations are presented. This project was partially funded by Grants A4345 to M. N. Ouztöreli and A2568 to T. M. Any neural network aimed at the coding sensory events must contain computational properties which generally allow the organism to reconstruct the input signals with some degree of accuracy-else the association between stimulus and response would, at best, be uncertain. In this paper we investigate the problem of reconstructing external input signals to neural networks when the activity profiles of only some of its member cells are known. The evolution and activities of such cells are defined by an earlier formulation of one of us (Ouztöreli 1979) and, here, we restrict our application to local curcuits within the vertebrate retina. Solutions to this inverse coding problem are presented for specific network equations and examplified with 1, 3, and 5 neuron cases. This work was partially supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under Grant A-4345 to M.N.O. and grant A-4395 to T.M.C. through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Movements against a variety of loads are relatively invariant in form. These movements are controlled in general by antagonistic groups of muscles. In this paper optimal control strategies are computed for coupling antagonistic muscles so as to minimize deviations from a desired trajectory. Simulations are presented for linear and nonlinear decision functions linking control of the two muscles for a variety of movements in a way that may be compared with experimental observations. This work was partly supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Grant NSERC OGP-4345 and by the Medical Research Council of Canada Grant MRC PG-47 through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Summary In rats, one large intravenous dose of cycloheximide leads to extensive development of two types of membrane-formations in the cells of corpora lutea, within two hours. Both the laminated dense bodies (concentric layers of smooth membranes showing high electron density) and the tubular aggregates (tightly packed smooth tubules with diameter smaller than usual) exhibited obvious connections with endoplasmic reticulum membranes. The reorganization of tubular aggregates gave rise to crystalloids showing hexagonal symmetry. The crystalloids, being obviously unstable, were transformed into smooth fingerprints (concentric arrays of paired agranular membranes showing the same density as endoplasmic reticulum membranes). Hypophysectomy, performed 24 hours previously, moderated but did not totally abolish the development of membranous configurations. The described effect of cycloheximide is considered to represent cellular injury, probably due to membrane-denaturation.This work was supported in part by the Medical Research Council of Canada (Block Term Grant MT-1829), the Ministère des Affaires Sociales, Quebec, and Succession J.A. In a series of articles (Leung et al., 1973, 1974; Ogztöreli, 1972, 1975, 1978, 1979; Stein et al., 1974) we have investigated some of the physiologically significant properties of a general neural model. In these papers the nature of the oscillations occuring in the model has been briefly analyzed by omitting the effects of the discrete time-lags in the interaction of neurons, although these time-lags were incoporated in the general model. In the present work we investigate the effects of the time-lags on the oscillations which are intrinsic to the neural model, depending on the structural parameters such as external inputs, interaction coefficients, self-inhibition, self-excitation and selfadaptation coefficients. The numerical solution of the neural model, the computation of the steady-state solutions and the natural modes of the oscillations around the steady-state solutions are described. This work was partly supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada under Grant NRC-A-4345 through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Summary Recent studies on the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus have been reviewed. The tendency to develop the disease is inherited, but other factors influence its expression, particularly aging. The hypothesis is advanced that diabetes is a heterogeneous disorder along a continuum of severity; its basis is a thrifty genotype that promotes survival both under conditions of privation, and in early stages of the lifespan, at the expense of accelerated aging later in the lifespan and/or under conditions of excess.Supported by grants from the Medical Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Diabetic Association Foundation Fund, during the tenure of a scholarship from the Medical Research Council.  相似文献

Purified amylases from high- and low-activity variants of Drosophila melanogaster showed identical specific activities. Immunoelectrophoresis of crude larval homogenates showed severalfold differences between strains in the amounts of cross-reacting material. Control of amylase activity is trans-acting in heterozygotes between high- and low-activity variants. These results suggest the existence of polymorphic regulatory genes affecting the production levels of amylase protein in D. melanogaster. This work was supported by Grant GM-21279 from the Institute of General Medical Science of the NIH to R. Summary The ultrastructure of the developing adrenal gland of the chick has been studied over the embryonic period 10 to 18 days.Cortical cells occur in double-rowed strands, are loosely attached in early development but more firmly attached later in development. Hypertrophy of mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi body, lipid and vacuoles increases with increasing age. Two cell types (designated Dark and Light) were present at 17 days of incubation. Their significance is discussed.Medullary cells occur as single cells at 10 days but more usually in groups by 18 days. Catecholamine-containing granules are a prominent feature of the medullary cells, at all ages. Two cell types could be distinguished in the medulla at 17 days of incubation. These may represent adrenalin and noradrenalin-containing cells.Changes in the ultrastructure of host adrenal glands after exposure to an 18 day adrenal gland, grafted onto the host chorio-allantoic membrane at 8 days, were studied. The chief response within the cortex of the host involved retardation of organelle hypertrophy, so that 17 day hosts resembled 14 day controls. More light cells were seen in the host than in the control cells. The medullary tissue of the host was also retarded in development and the release of catecholamine-containing granules inhibited. The significance of these observations in relation to compensatory hypertrophy within the host is discussed.Supported by National Research Council of Canada Grant No. A 5056, and by a Dalhousie University Research Development Grant. In a recent work (Oguztöreli, 1980) a mathematical model for studying the neutral activities in a vertebrate retina has been investigated, where the basic retinal network involves interconnected five neurons of different kind. This model is general enough to cover a great variety of neurons in the same retina as well as in the retinas of different species. In the present work we deal with an extension of the basic network considered in (Oguztöreli, 1980). This extended model contains interconnected twelve neurons: three receptor cells, two horizontal cells, two bipolar cells, two amacrine cells and three ganglion cells. The performance of the model under different conditions, and, the experimental determination of the system parameters are discussed. The background of the modelling and simulations can be found in (Oguztöreli, 1979, 1980).This work was supported by grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada under Grant NSERC-A-4345 and Grant NSERC G0377 to MNO through the University of Alberta  相似文献

Summary In the present work the kinetics of muscular contractions are studied, based on a three-state model which is introduced in Section I. The general properties of this class of models for muscular contractions are derived in Sections II–VI. The kinetic equations are solved for four particular examples in Sections VII–X. These analytical results should be useful for comparison with experimental data to determine the functional dependence of the rate constants and on muscle length. This work was partly supported by the National Research Council of Canada Grant NRC-A4345 and by the Medical Research Council of Canada Grant MRC-MA-3307 through the University of Alberta.  相似文献

The optimal linear filters derived in the preceding paper can be thoroughly evaluated using computer simulations, based on the properties of mammalian sensory and motor nerve fibres. Using reasonable values for action potential waveforms, conduction velocity and electrode noise, good separation of motor and sensory signals can be obtained. The performance of the filters is degraded by 1) increasing the electrode noise, 2) introducing dispersion in the conduction velocities, or 3) variation in the waveform of the action potentials from that used in designing the filters. However, the variations needed to seriously degrade performance are quite large compared to those which are likely to be present in mammalian nerves. Use of these filters to distinguish different classes of sensory (or motor) signals based on conduction velocity is discussed. This work was partially supported by the Technical Research Council of Denmark (Grant 516-6703.E406), the Medical Research Council of Canada (Grant MRC-MT3307) and the National Research Council of Canada (Grant NRC A-4345)  相似文献

Summary Chemical and electronic synapses are present in the ocellar synaptic region of the moth, Trichoplusia ni. The chemical synapses all appear to be of the conventional type. Four different chemical synaptic contacts were observed: Receptor cell axons presynaptic to receptor cell axons, receptor cell axons presynaptic to 1st order interneurons, 1st order interneurons presynaptic to receptor cell axons, and 1st order interneurons presynaptic to 1st order interneurons. Two different types of contact made by electronic synapes were observed: Contacts between receptor cell axons and 1st order interneurons, and contacts between 1st order interneurons. The significance of this synaptic arrangement for the generation of on and off responses in the 1st order interneurons is discussed.Supported by NSF Grant BMS 75-07645 and by the VPI & SU Research Division  相似文献

Summary A woman with secondary amenorrhoea and an X long-arm deletion (pterq21:) is described and compared with 30 adult non-mosaic, banded cases. Approximately 50% of the patients had gonadal dysgenesis associated with a higher frequency of short stature and Turner stigmata than in women with indication of ovarian activity. It is suggested that preservation of bands Xq2628 may be decisive for normal ovarian function.Supported by grants to E.N. from the P.
