A substrate for surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS) in the near-ultraviolet (UV) range is presented, extending the potential window for electrochemical applications. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized exhibiting a localized surface plasmon resonance at the excitation wavelength and adsorbed onto a template-stripped silver substrate, whereby the number of particles per unit area was controlled by the adsorption time. Any attempt to employ spectro-electrochemistry on these surfaces, however, was hampered by the anodic dissolution of silver at potentials higher than 300 mV vs. standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). In order to extend the potential window for electrochemistry and still being able to use the resonance effect from silver nanoparticles, a 5-nm thick gold layer was sputtered on top of the Ag/AgNPs substrate. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of cytochrome c (cc) were carried out showing that the electrochemical behavior of gold can extend the potential range of the composite surface significantly. Furthermore, a potentiostatic titration of cc on this substrate by SERRS demonstrated that the resonance Raman effect of silver nanoparticles with the Soret band of the heme had been maintained in the presence of the gold adlayer. The positions of the plasmon resonances measured by reflection spectroscopy method were confirmed by finite-difference time-domain simulations. Gold is the optimal substrate for electrochemistry, whereas silver is the optimal material for plasmonic applications. Combining both metals gives us a surface with good performance for electrochemical applications as well as an enhancement effect sufficient to study redox-active biomacromolecules such as cc.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that the sensitivity of surface plasmon resonance phase-interrogation biosensor can be enhanced by using silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were fabricated on silver films by using thermal evaporation. Sizes of silver nanoparticles on silver thin film can be tuned by controlling the deposition parameters of thermal evaporation. By using surface plasmon resonance heterodyne interferometey to measure the phase difference between the p and s polarization of incident light, we have demonstrated that sensitivity of glucose detection down to the order of 10−8 refractive index units can be obtained.  相似文献

The present work reports an investigation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of silver nanoparticles in SiO2–TiO2 hosts. The surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles was observed in the wavelength range 300–400 nm. Numerical calculation of SPR of silver nanoparticles with spherical morphology was done on the basis of discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method. The observed fluorescence spectrum fits well with the theoretically calculated one. The luminescence enhancement is attributed to the strong local electric field which increases the exciting and emitting photons coupled to SPR. An effort has been made to study the surface plasmon mediated excitation energy transfer (EET) between two spherical metal nanoparticles. The van der Waals (vdW) energy between plasmonic silver nanoparticles in the present hosts has been estimated.  相似文献

The surface plasmon energy in spherical silver nanoparticles embedded in silica host matrix depends on the size and temperature of the nanoparticles. The dependences of the surface plasmon energy were studied for silver nanoparticles in the size range 11?C30?nm and in the temperature interval 293?C650?K. As the size of the nanoparticles decreases or the temperature increases, the surface plasmon resonance shifts to red. When the size of the nanoparticles decreases, the scattering rate of the conduction electrons increases, which results in the nonlinear red shift of the surface plasmon resonance. The red shift with temperature is linear for larger nanoparticles and becomes nonlinear for smaller ones. As the temperature of the nanoparticles increases, the volume thermal expansion of the nanoparticles leads to the red shift of the surface plasmon resonance. The thermal volume expansion coefficient depends on the size and temperature. It increases with a decrease of the nanoparticle size and an increase of the temperature.  相似文献

Studies comparing the effect of adding two different nanoparticle compositions on the plasmonic properties of Au nanovoid arrays were undertaken. Surface-enhanced resonance luminescence and surface-enhanced resonance Raman studies comparing dispersed Ag nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticle aggregates on gold nanovoid arrays were undertaken. These studies showed that using Ag nanoparticle aggregates increased both luminescence and Raman efficiency relative to when dispersed nanoparticles were used; in addition, these studies also showed that adding dispersed Ag nanoparticles supported a more reproducible enhancement in luminescence and Raman across the substrate compared to using Ag nanoparticle aggregates. Finite element analysis simulations indicated that surface plasmon polariton distribution in the sample was affected by the presence of the Ag nanoparticles on the Au nanovoid array.  相似文献

Silver nanoparticles: partial oxidation and antibacterial activities   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The physical and chemical properties of silver nanoparticles that are responsible for their antimicrobial activities have been studied with spherical silver nanoparticles (average diameter approximately 9 nm) synthesized by the borohydride reduction of Ag+ ions, in relation to their sensitivity to oxidation, activities towards silver-resistant bacteria, size-dependent activities, and dispersal in electrolytic solutions. Partially (surface) oxidized silver nanoparticles have antibacterial activities, but zero-valent nanoparticles do not. The levels of chemisorbed Ag+ that form on the particle's surface, as revealed by changes in the surface plasmon resonance absorption during oxidation and reduction, correlate well with the observed antibacterial activities. Silver nanoparticles, like Ag+ in the form of AgNO3 solution, are tolerated by the bacteria strains resistant to Ag+. The antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles are related to their size, with the smaller particles having higher activities on the basis of equivalent silver mass content. The silver nanoparticles aggregate in media with a high electrolyte content, resulting in a loss of antibacterial activities. However, complexation with albumin can stabilize the silver nanoparticles against aggregation, leading to a retention of the antibacterial activities. Taken together, the results show that the antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles are dependent on chemisorbed Ag+, which is readily formed owing to extreme sensitivity to oxygen. The antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles are dependent on optimally displayed oxidized surfaces, which are present in well-dispersed suspensions.  相似文献

Surface plasma oscillations in metallic particles as well as in thin metallic films have been studied extensively in the past decades. New features regarding surface plasma excitations are, however, constantly discovered, leading, for example, to surface-enhanced Raman scattering studies and enhanced optical transmission though metal films with nanohole arrays. In the present work, the role of a metallic substrate is examined in two cases, one involving an overcoat of dielectric nanoparticles and the other an overcoat of metallic nanoparticles. Theoretical results are obtained by modeling the nanoparticles as forming a two-dimensional, hexagonal lattice of spheres. The scattered electromagnetic field is then calculated using a variant of the Green function method. Comparison with experimental results is made for nanoparticles of tungsten oxide and tin oxide deposited on either gold or silver substrates, giving qualitative agreement on the extra absorption observed when the dielectric nanoparticles are added to the metallic surfaces. Such absorption would be attributed to the mirror image effects between the particles and the substrate. On the other hand, calculations of the optical properties of silver or gold nanoparticle arrays on a gold or a silver substrate demonstrate very interesting features in the spectral region from 400 to 1,000 nm. Interactions between the nanoparticle arrays surface plasmons and their images in the metallic substrate would be responsible for the red shift observed in the absorption resonance. Moreover, effects of particle size and ambient index of refraction are studied, showing a great potential for applications in biosensing with structures consisting of metallic nanoparticle arrays on metallic substrates.  相似文献

Plasmonic Properties of Silver Nanoparticles on Two Substrates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, we examine the plasmonic properties of silver nanoparticles, with an emphasis on the sensitivity of the extinction spectra on the supporting substrate: silica (SiO2) microsphere and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass slide, on which silver particles are deposited electroless and electrochemically, respectively. The microstructures and phases of these nanoparticles are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, field emission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties which are experimentally measured in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectral region are compared to electrodynamics calculations based on the discrete dipole approximation. A wide SPR band ranging from 400 to 800 nm is observed for the silver nanoparticles on a silica microsphere, which is similar to the plasmon resonance characteristics of metal nanoshells. The SPR of a conducting substrate, however, has an effect on the plasmonic properties of silver nanoparticles at longer wavelength.   相似文献

Biopolymer used for the production of nanoparticles (NPs) has attracted increasing attention. In the presence article we use aqueous solution of polysaccharide Cyamopsis tetragonaloba commonly known as guar gum (GG), from plants. GG acts as reductive preparation of silver nanoparticles which are found to be <10nm in size. The uniformity of the NPs size was measured by the SEM and TEM, while a face centered cubic structure of crystalline silver nanoparticles was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction technique. Aqueous ammonia sensing study of polymer/silver nanoparticles nanocomposite (GG/AgNPs NC) was performed by optical method based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The performances of optical sensor were investigated which provide the excellent result. The response time of 2-3s and the detection limit of ammonia solution, 1ppm were found at room temperature. Thus, in future this room temperature optical ammonia sensor can be used for clinical and medical diagnosis for detecting low ammonia level in biological fluids, such as plasma, sweat, saliva, cerebrospinal liquid or biological samples in general for various biomedical applications in human.  相似文献

Surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectra were measured for the beta-carotene and lycopene carotenoids present in low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), which were isolated from human plasma and adsorbed on roughened silver surfaces. The silver surface was modified by formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of carboxylate-terminated linear alkanethiols in order to simulate the LDL binding region of the cellular LDL receptor. Thiols of different chain length were used to produce SAMs of varying thicknesses. It was shown that carotenoids are not released from the LDL particle upon adsorption onto the bare and thiol modified silver surfaces. The SERRS studies indicated that beta-carotene and lycopene were present in the shell of the LDL particle. The dependence of SERRS on the distance from the silver surface was different for beta-carotene and lycopene in LDL. This observation suggests that the two carotenoids are located in different places of the LDL particle.  相似文献

We compare the Tollens reaction, a simple chemical coating method, with the more commonly used RF sputtering technique for use in creating surfaces suitable for sensing applications based on surface plasmon resonance. Experiments show that by optimising the chemical process, these two approaches can produce surfaces that exhibit similar surface plasmon resonance (SPR) performance. Thus, the Tollens method is a viable one for coating the interior surfaces of a microstructured optical fibre. As a demonstration, this technique was applied to a microstructured optical fibre, and a 60-nm silver layer is produced along the entire length of a 1-m-long fibre. This is the first step towards the realisation of a SPR sensing device based on microstructured optical fibres.  相似文献

Nanocomposite thin films consisting of Cu nanoparticles embedded in silica matrix were synthesized by atom beam co-sputtering technique. Plasmonic, optical, and structural properties of the nanocomposite films were investigated by using ultraviolet (UV)–visible absorption spectroscopy, nonlinear optical transmission, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and low-frequency Raman scattering. UV–visible absorption studies revealed the surface plasmon resonance absorption at 564 nm which showed a red shift with increase in Cu fraction. XRD results together with surface plasmon resonance absorption confirmed the presence of Cu nanoparticles of different size. Low-frequency Raman studies of nanocomposite films revealed breathing modes in Cu nanoparticles. Nanocomposites with lower metal fractions were found to behave like optical limiters. The possibility of controllably tuning the optical nonlinearity of these nanocomposites could enable them to be the potential candidates for applications in nanophotonics.  相似文献

A novel technique for patterning based on visible light at Au-TiO2 and Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite film surfaces has been developed for the first time. TiO2 films loaded with Au and Ag nanoparticles were modified with hydrophobic thiols to obtain hydrophobic surfaces. The surfaces were converted to hydrophilic by visible light irradiation. Hydrophobic/hydrophilic patterning was also possible by visible light irradiation through a photomask. The patterning was due to removal of the thiol based on plasmon photoelectrochemistry. Visible-light-induced plasmon resonance at the Au and Ag nanoparticles gives rise to charge separation and redox reactions. The thiol is removed from the Au-TiO2 film probably by oxidative desorption, and from the Ag-TiO2 film owing chiefly to oxidation of Ag nanoparticles to Ag+.  相似文献

Self-assembled photonic crystals grown from different colloidal sizes are coated with gold nanoparticles preferentially on their surface. The effect of localized surface plasmon resonance and the photonic stopband on the Raman scattering from these crystals is analyzed from the angle-dependent scattering measurements. The coupling of photonic and plasmonic modes at the surface of the photonic crystal is verified by measuring the increment in Raman scattering from the crystals containing the gold nanoparticles, and this increment is found to follow the spectral trend of localized surface plasmon resonance.  相似文献

We investigate the linear and nonlinear optical properties of Basic Fuchsin influenced by femtosecond laser ablated silver nanoparticles in deionised water. Single beam z-scan technique using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (Spectra PhysicsLAB-1760, 532 nm, 7 ns, 10 Hz) is used for the present study. Quenching of fluorescence is observed in the presence of silver nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopic observation reveals that the nanoparticles are spherical in shape, with an average size of 7 nm. The samples show self-defocusing nonlinearity and better nonlinear absorption behavior in the presence of silver sol. The nonlinear absorption varies with varying input fluence and concentration. The results show that the variations in the nonlinear parameters are also due to the surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles. The nonlinearity of the dye is increased in the presence of silver nanoparticles, which makes the material suitable for various photonic and optoelectronic applications.  相似文献

The influence of metal nanoparticles on linear and nonlinear optical properties of surrounding organic molecules has been widely investigated, whereas much less attention has been paid to the influence of molecules on properties of nanoparticles. Here, we employ transient absorption spectroscopy to address the nonlinear optical responses of the resonantly coupled silver nanoparticle–organic dye systems and demonstrate that silver nanoparticles covered with dye molecules show enhanced and spectrally different nonlinear extinction changes from pristine nanoparticles. We identify changes of the plasmon resonance band of nanoparticles induced by excitation of surrounding dye. We attribute these exciton–plasmon coupling effects to the excitation-induced refractive index modifications of the dye layer surrounding a nanoparticle and to the back-transfer of the oscillator strength borrowed by the dye from the nanoparticle.  相似文献

Metal-dielectric-graphene hybrid heterostructures based on oxides Al2O3, HfO2, and ZrO2 as well as on complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor compatible dielectric Si3N4 covering plasmonic metals Cu and Ag have been fabricated and studied. We show that the characteristics of these heterostructures are important for surface plasmon resonance biosensing (such as minimum reflectivity, sharp phase changes, resonance full width at half minimum and resonance sensitivity to refractive index unit (RIU) changes) can be significantly improved by adding dielectric/graphene layers. We demonstrate maximum plasmon resonance spectral sensitivity of more than 30,000 nm/RIU for Cu/Al2O3 (ZrO2, Si3N4), Ag/Si3N4 bilayers and Cu/dielectric/graphene three-layers for near-infrared wavelengths. The sensitivities of the fabricated heterostructures were?~?5–8 times higher than those of bare Cu or Ag thin films. We also found that the width of the plasmon resonance reflectivity curves can be reduced by adding dielectric/graphene layers. An unexpected blueshift of the plasmon resonance spectral position was observed after covering noble metals with high-index dielectric/graphene heterostructures. We suggest that the observed blueshift and a large enhancement of surface plasmon resonance sensitivity in metal-dielectric-graphene hybrid heterostructures are produced by stationary surface dipoles which generate a strong electric field concentrated at the very thin top dielectric/graphene layer.

The synthesis of metal nanoparticles by green methods attained enormous attention in recent years due to its easiness, non-toxicity, and eco-friendly nature. In the present study, noble metal nanoparticles such as silver and gold were prepared using an aqueous leaf extract of a medicinal plant, Bauhinia purpurea. The leaf extract performed as both reducing and stabilizing agents for the development of nanoparticles. The formations of silver and gold nanoparticles were confirmed by observing the surface plasmon resonance peaks at 430 nm and 560 nm, respectively, in UV–Vis absorption spectrum. Various properties of nanoparticles were demonstrated using the characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD, TEM, and EDX. The synthesized silver and gold nanoparticles had a momentous anticancer effect against lung carcinoma cell line A549 in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 values of 27.97 µg/mL and 36.39 µg/mL, respectively. The antimicrobial studies of synthesized nanoparticles were carried out by agar well diffusion method against six microbial strains. Silver and gold nanoparticles were also showed high antioxidant potentials with IC50 values of 42.37 µg/mL and 27.21 µg/mL, respectively; it was measured using DPPH assay. Additionally, the nanoparticles were observed to be good catalysts for the reduction of organic dyes.
