We examined the relative importance of various botanical and topographical factors that influence nesting-site selection by chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Kalinzu Forest of Uganda. All of them—vegetation type; topographical features; frequency of preferred tree species; frequency of preferred tree size; fruit abundance—significantly influenced nesting-site selection. Fruit abundance and vegetation type had much stronger influences on site selection than the other factors did. In a dense forest environment like the Kalinzu Forest, the local and seasonal distributions of chimpanzee nests seem to reflect the pattern of home range use for feeding. 相似文献

The population of chimpanzees in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda was censused with nest counts using the line-transect method.
Four methods were examined to estimate density. The estimated densities, ranging from 2.0 to 4.7 chimpanzees per km2, all indicated a high population density, in comparison with other chimpanzee habitats. Moreover, the density in the logged
area of the Kalinzu Forest was higher than that in the unlogged area. Several factors are thought to contribute to the high
density in the Kalinzu Forest. Notable are the mosaic forest structure dominated by mature forest with patches of logged areas,
selective logging of non-food tree species of chimpanzees, and low hunting pressure. These results suggest that selective
logging may be a practical means of primate conservation in places where timbers are exploited. 相似文献

The study determined the abundance and species composition of fig trees that fruited in the different forest types of Kalinzu Forest Reserve (KFR), Uganda. It also assessed the seasonal variations in abundance and species composition of the fig trees, the relationships between the fruiting patterns and rainfall and the figs’ inter‐ and intraspecific patterns of fruiting episodes. Sixteen fig species represented by 515 individuals were monitored monthly from December 2007 to January 2010. Most individuals and species that fruited were in the secondary forest types (the Musanga‐ and Parinari‐dominated secondary forests) and abundances of individuals of the different species were significantly associated with particular forest types. One colonizing species (Ficus sur) was the most abundant species that fruited and was mostly recorded in the secondary forests. Species composition and abundances of trees that fruited varied seasonally, and only the abundances of two canopy species (Ficus lingua and Ficus sansibarica) were significantly related with monthly rainfall. Most species experienced at least four fruiting phases, and F. sur displayed the longest episode covering 22 months. The results suggest that the past intensive logging in KFR promoted the regeneration of a diversity of fig species, and most species generally experience community‐wide asynchronous fruiting. 相似文献

This study reports the rate of fruit phenological pattern of Musanga leo-errerae and how it sustains the chimpanzee population better than other fruits in Kalinzu Forest Reserve. We analysed 2635 faecal samples to determine the proportion of M. leo-errerae by composition of fruit diet compared with other fruits eaten by chimpanzees. Musanga leo-errerae trees were monitored for fruit production between November 2002 and December 2004. Musanga leo-errerae fruit production did not vary significantly between months (ANOVA, F = 2.0, d.f. = 11, P = 0.13). The size of fruit and rate maturation varied with seasons, although fruit production was synchronous and available all year round. From the 2635 faecal samples analysed, 79.2% contained M. leo-errerae fruit seed. Chimpanzee diet in Kalinzu is 75% frugivorous, 37.2% of which is solely contributed by M. leo-errerae fruit. The continuous availability of M. leo-errerae fruit makes it the most important food for chimpanzees in this forest, especially during general fruit scarcity there by joining figs in importance for chimpanzee survival in tropical Africa. 相似文献

Red-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius) were observed hunting green pigeons (Treron calva) in the Kalinzu Forest in Uganda. During 2 h 39 min, I observed two cases of successful hunting and one case of unsuccessful hunting in a Ficus saussureana tree. Red-tailed monkeys stalked the pigeons until they were within 2–3 m, and then jumped and caught them. In both successful cases, blue monkeys (C. mitis) ran to the hunting site from adjacent trees in order to poach the prey, and the red-tailed monkeys fled. One of these red-tailed monkeys dropped the pigeon while fleeing, and the blue monkey climbed down from the tree to search for it. This is the first record of cercopithecoid monkeys hunting birds that are outside of the nest and moving freely, and also the first record of red-tailed monkeys hunting vertebrates. However rare it may be, the repeated hunting attempts using similar techniques and the immediate attempt of blue monkeys to poach the prey suggest that this type of hunting was not a one-time event that happened by chance. Blue monkeys and an adult chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in and around the fig tree did not attempt to hunt. The hunting of volant birds may be enabled by the small body size and the quick movements of red-tailed monkeys. 相似文献

We previously reported on a study of 4 soils that chimpanzees of the Kanyawara community in the Kibale National Park, Uganda
consumed on a near-daily basis. We suggested that iron was a possible chemical stimulus in association with high quantities
of Si:Al = 1:1-dominated clay minerals in the consumed material. To test our initial findings, we analyzed 18 samples from
the same general area including 7 samples that the chimpanzees did not eat. Among the chemical elements, As, Au, Br, Ca, Cl,
Dy, Mg, Ni, Sb, Sr, and I are below detection limits. Only Fe stands out as a potentially important nutritional element present
in sufficient quantity to provide a physiological stimulus for chimpanzees living at high elevations near the flanks of the
Ruwenzori Mountains. Along with Fe, metahalloysite is present in high amounts in these soils. In its pure crystalline form
as a pharmaceutical grade clay mineral metahalloysite may well counteract the debilitating effects of diarrhea, with an effect
similar to what is achieved with kaolinite (cf. KaopectateTM). An unexpected result, the relatively high nitrogen and carbon in the eaten samples relative to the uneaten group, indicates
the chimpanzees may have a higher threshold for organic-rich material than previously believed. Contrarily, the color of the
ingested material, depicts a material with less humus than in the uneaten group, a finding that is compatible with previous
work reported at other geophagy sites in Africa. Of all the choices of soil available to them, the chimpanzees appear to be
selecting highly homogeneous chemical natural earths with well-leached and uniform mineralogical material similar to the uneaten
group, but with higher relative amounts of clay size material. 相似文献

Ranging Patterns of Chimpanzees in a Montane Forest of Kahuzi,Democratic Republic of Congo 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
I studied ranging patterns of a semihabituated unit-group of chimpanzees for 60 mo at Kahuzi. They had a total home range of 12.81 km2 and a mean annual home range of 7.55 km2. Considering the low density of chimpanzees in the area vis-à-vis chimpanzees in arid areas, their home range is very small. Kahuzi chimpanzees used the home range in a clumped pattern, frequently visiting the core area and only rarely entering peripheral areas. The monthly range changes with fruit availability, increasing during periods of fruit scarcity. There was no consistent seasonal difference in the size of the home range. However, use of different habitat types may vary seasonally. While there was no seasonal effect in the use of primary forest, the chimpanzees showed a statistically consistent seasonal difference in their use of secondary forest, visiting it mainly during the dry season when fig trees were in fruit. Since the primary forest provides them with more food fruits, chimpanzees tended to use more frequently the small patches of primary forest in their home range. Thus, the size and distribution of small fragmented primary forests may be an important factor influencing the ranging pattern of chimpanzees at Kahuzi. 相似文献

A central issue in socioecology is the nature of the relationship between an organism's environment and its social structure. In chimpanzees, the fission-fusion social system is thought to minimize feeding competition for primary dietary components: ephemeral, dispersed patches of ripe fruit. Intragroup feeding competition is thought to force individuals into small parties. Informal observations in the Sonso region of the Budongo forest had suggested that in this habitat, food supply was such that feeding competition was less important in determining grouping patterns than elsewhere. We used data collected on food supply and party sizes over a 4-year period to investigate this suggestion. In accord with theoretical expectation, sizes of foraging parties fluctuated with the size of food patches. However, party sizes showed either negative or no relationship with habitat-wide measures of food abundance. Likewise party sizes showed little relationship to overall measures of food dispersion. For important dietary items, both fruit and leaves had patchy distributions, though the degree of clumping was not strong, and fruit was not more clumped than leaves. Generally, abundant food appeared to be less patchy, and chimpanzees appeared to use more patches as food became more abundant rather than forming larger parties. We suggest that both dispersal and abundance need to be considered when investigating the impact of food supply on grouping patterns, and that the importance of food as a factor in determining chimpanzee grouping patterns declines with increasing levels of abundance. 相似文献

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) populations in central Africa are rapidly declining as a result of disease epidemics, commercial bushmeat hunting, and habitat
destruction. Our main objective was to estimate the absolute abundance and habitat utilization of chimpanzees and gorillas
in the intact forests of the Goualougo Triangle in the Republic of Congo, and in an adjacent area in which selective logging
will take place in the near future. The estimates provide a unique baseline for apes inhabiting an undisturbed environment.
A second objective was to compare estimates of abundance and patterns of habitat utilization generated by different techniques:
1) distance sampling of individual ape nests and nest sites along line transects, 2) direct observations of apes during reconnaissance
surveys, and 3) observations of ape traces during reconnaissance surveys. We completed a total of 222 km of line transect
surveys in 4 sampling areas, resulting in overall density estimates of 1.53 chimpanzees/km2 and 2.34 gorillas/km2 from nest sites. We generated a density estimate of 2.23 chimpanzees/km2 from direct observations during reconnaissance surveys of a semihabituated community in 1 of the 4 sampling areas. Habitat
use profiles that nest surveys depicted on transects differed from those of direct observations and traces we encountered
on reconnaissance surveys. We found the highest overall abundance of chimpanzee nests in monodominant Gilbertiodendron forest, whereas our direct observations showed that chimpanzees preferred mixed species forest. Transects that traversed
the core area of the community range had the highest encounter rates of chimpanzee nests and nest sites. Gorilla nests on
transects showed a preference only for mixed species forest with an open canopy, but direct observations and traces on reconnaissance
surveys clearly indicated that gorillas use several habitat types. We conclude by evaluating the precision of these nest surveys
and our ability to detect future trends in ape densities in the Goualougo Triangle.

Fruit Availability and Peccary Frugivory in an Isolated Atlantic Forest Fragment: Effects on Peccary Ranging Behavior and Habitat Use 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The goal of this study was to examine seasonal frugivory by two sympatric peccary species ( Tayassu pecari and T. tajacu ) in a small (2178 ha), Atlantic Forest fragment on the inland plateau region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Fruit availability was determined with systematic ground surveys conducted over a 5-yr period. Examining fruit availability trends for dry and wet seasons, we found that species diversity was greater in the wet season, but the total number and dry mass of fruits were higher in the dry season. Fruit abundance in the dry season was due to one palm, 'jeriva' ( Syagrus romanzoffiana ), which could be considered a keystone species at Caetetus Ecological Station as it also supported a diverse array of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. White-lipped peccaries were the only ungulates that ate palmito fruits ( Euterpe edulis ) at Caetetus. They consumed ripe and unripe fruits and predated the seeds by chewing the pulp and seed. This occurred primarily during the dry season and was associated with a seasonal range shift and a preference for palmito habitat by the white-lipped peccaries. The dominance of fruits in peccary diets (80% fruit items in scat) has management implications for other plateau forest fragments. Forest fragments with diminished fruit abundance or diversity, or lacking key species such as S. romanzoffiana or E. edulis , will not support the energetic requirements of the characteristically large and highly mobile white-lipped peccary populations. 相似文献

Frugivorous bats can be attracted with essential oils from ripe chiropterochoric fruit. We evaluated the efficiency of these oils to attract bats in degraded areas within the Atlantic Rain Forest, particularly pasture and agricultural land. We hypothesized that induction units (IUs), each containing a rubber septum impregnated with oil, would have more bat activity than their respective control units (CUs; without the oil). To test this hypothesis we monitored bat flight activity with night‐vision infrared visors in eight IU and CU from August 2006 to July 2007. We also verified the probability of arrival of chiropterochoric seeds by analyzing the diet of bats captured in a neighboring forest area. Our initial hypothesis that units with odor would lead to greater bat activity was confirmed. Results indicated a rich community of fruit‐eating bats, and dietary analysis revealed a huge potential for dispersion of a vast amount of seeds from different plant species at the IU. Although our study does not reveal with certainty which bat species are attracted to the oil, the flying patterns coincide with those described for the foraging behavior of fruit‐eating phyllostomids. Furthermore, the fact that the bats spend more time flying around the odor source compared to flying time around CU suggest an increase in seed rain. Taken together, these results suggest that the use of essential oils from chiropterochoric fruits induces a qualitative and quantitative increase in seed dispersal in areas that otherwise would not be frequently visited by frugivorous bats. 相似文献

The home range of the Sonso community of chimpanzees from the Budongo Forest, Uganda 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Nicholas E. Newton-Fisher 《African Journal of Ecology》2003,41(2):150-156
Early studies of chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest, Uganda, reported only rough estimates for home range size. This study aimed to quantify home range size and habitat composition for chimpanzees of the Sonso community in this forest. Home range is the habitually used portion of the total area over which an animal travels, and for chimpanzees the home range is shared by the community. From data collected in 1994 and 1995, the home range for this community was estimated to cover an area of 6.78 km2 using the minimum convex polygon analysis technique and 6.89 km2 using fixed kernel analysis. Habitat was highly heterogeneous. The small home range and consequent high local population density (approximately 6.8 individuals km?1) suggests that the Sonso region is highly productive in chimpanzee foods, possibly in contrast to other parts of the forest. This estimate of home range size is among the smallest reported for habituated chimpanzees, but comparisons with other sites are confounded by methodological and analytical differences. Future studies of chimpanzee ranging patterns should endeavour to use precise locations and the latest analytical techniques to ensure accurate estimation of range size and structure, and intersite comparability. 相似文献

The diet of chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Nicholas E. Newton-Fisher 《African Journal of Ecology》1999,37(3):344-354
Chimpanzee diets are highly variable, but in all cases dominated by ripe fruit. Previous work has suggested that in the Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda, ripe fruit remains available throughout the year, but dietary data for chimpanzees at this site remain sparse. This paper details the diet of a recently habituated community of Budongo chimpanzees living in the Sonso region. Chimpanzees of this community spent 64.5% of their feeding time eating fruit, and 19.7% eating arboreal leaves. Terrestrial herbaceous vegetation formed only a minor component of the diet. In these general dietary characteristics, Budongo chimpanzees show greater similarity to those of the Gombe National Park than they do to those in the geographically closer and floristically more similar Kibale Forest National Park. The diet was dominated by the fruit of four species and leaves of two species, although the composition of the diet varied from month to month, remaining diverse. Figs were consumed throughout much of the year, and in consequence, should perhaps be regarded as a staple, rather than fallback, food. A period of food scarcity was not apparent in this study and future comparative nutritional investigation will be required to determine whether these chimpanzees face a time of dietary hardship. 相似文献

Mountain gorillas are highly folivorous. Food is abundant and perennially available in much of their habitat. Still, limited research has shown that single gorilla groups heavily used areas where food biomass and quality were relatively high and where they met daily nutritional needs with relatively low foraging effort. Also, ecological factors influenced solitary males less than groups with females. Long-term data on habitat use by multiple mountain gorilla social units and more extensive data on variation in food distribution, presented here, confirm that food distribution influences areal occupation densities across groups and over time. These data also confirm the group/solitary male distinction and show that food distribution became more important for one male once he acquired females. Groups used 25 km

, and inter-annual home range and core area overlap was often low. Annual home range and core area size varied considerably within groups and across years. It bore no simple relationship to group size and estimated group biomass. Core areas were biased samples of total home ranges and were relatively good foraging areas. One group abruptly shifted its home range in response to male mating competition. Home ranges of two others expanded from 1981 to 1987, though at a decreasing rate. Data on one such group, which varied considerably in size, are consistent with arguments that costs of scramble competition are low except in unusually large groups. Low site fidelity, low scramble costs, and high home range overlap should decrease the ecological costs of female transfer. 相似文献

I investigated the feeding ecology of lHoests monkeys (Cercopithecus lhoesti) and blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis) in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda. Although forest guenons are generally thought to be frugivores or folivores, these two guenons spent a large proportion of their time feeding on invertebrates. The lHoests monkey and the blue monkey spent as much as 66 and 50% of their time on insectivory, respectively. These proportions of time spent on invertebrate feeding are higher than those reported elsewhere for forest guenons. LHoests monkeys mainly utilized the area near the ground for invertebrate feeding, while blue monkeys utilized the area around 20 m above the ground. It seemed that guenons have an ability to change their diet according to the environment. 相似文献

A quintessential urban estuary is the lower Passaic River in northeastern New Jersey, USA. This system is environmentally degraded and its ecosystem is functionally limited. Birds in this river are of particular interest for ecological assessment and environmental management because they are conspicuous, ecologically important, and their habitat requirements encompass the full range of ecosystems associated with the estuary. In this article, we present the results of a 1-year seasonal bird survey of the lower 6 miles of the Passaic River. We contrast our survey results with those from other waterways in the region that have stressor issues similar to the Passaic (i.e., contaminants, pathogens, physical disturbance, etc.), but which have substantially more wetlands habitat available for birds (i.e., fewer habitat constraints). Our objective was to evaluate the influence of habitat availability or constraints on bird use in such systems. The results of our survey and comparison to conditions of other regional waterways demonstrate that the lack of wetland and associated shoreline habitat in the lower Passaic River is likely the primary constraint on bird use of the system. Future investigations of individual stressors in this region should identify the habitat constraints in the decision matrix for judging management options. 相似文献

We recorded 310 fresh chimpanzee night nests at 72 nest sites to determine their choice of tree and site for nesting vis-à-vis the effects of sympatric gorillas. Chimpanzees did not use trees for nesting according to their abundance, but instead tended to nest in fruit trees that they used as food sources. Nesting patterns of chimpanzees may vary with nesting group size, the type of vegetation, and fruit species eaten or not eaten by gorillas. When chimpanzees lodged as a small group in the secondary forest, they nested more frequently in trees bearing ripe fruits eaten only by themselves than in those with fruit eaten also by gorillas. When they lodged as a large group in the primary forest, they nested more frequently in trees bearing ripe fruits eaten by both apes. Nest group size is positively correlated with the availability of preferred ripe fruits in secondary forest. These findings not only reflect the larger foraging groups at the larger fruiting trees but also suggest that chimpanzees may have tended to occupy fruiting trees effectively by nesting in them and by forming large nest groups when the fruits attracted gorillas. Competition over fruits between gorillas and chimpanzees, due to their low productivity in the montane forest of Kahuzi, may have promoted the chimpanzee tactics. 相似文献
