The parasitic wasp Cephalonomia tarsalis parasitizes larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, which feed on wheat grains. In contrast to most other host–parasitoid systems studied so far, the grain beetles are highly mobile within their habitat, bulk of grains in grain stores. This should increase the wasps’ problem to locate the hosts. To study the host-finding strategy of C. tarsalis females, the reaction of wasps to different grain and host-derived odour sources was tested in a four-chamber-olfactometer. These experiments revealed that wasps were attracted by healthy grains and mechanically damaged grains. In direct comparison, healthy and mechanically damaged grains are equally attractive. Both potential sources of host-derived odours, host faeces and trail-traces of larvae on filter paper were attractive to the wasps. The response to trail-traces vanished 30 min after larvae had been removed from the filter paper. With respect to the specificity of the odours, it turned out that wasps were attracted to odours from the seed–host complexes from O. surinamensis and Oryzaephilus mercator and the non-host complex of larvae of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius in wheat grains. Odours from the seed–host complex were preferred. From these results, we hypothesize that host habitat location in C. tarsalis is achieved by using grain-derived odours. Within the habitat, wasps search for kairomones from host faeces and host trails. Following these larval trails finally leads wasps to their hosts.  相似文献

Behavioral responses of male and female Rhyzopertha dominica L. (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) to odors from pulverized wheat seeds, peanuts, cowpeas, potato tubers, acorns, and twigs from cedar and pine were compared in dual‐choice, still‐air bioassays. We investigated the reproductive success of R. dominica on five of the seven plant tissues (wheat, peanuts, cowpeas, dried potato tubers, and acorns). A field experiment was also conducted to investigate responses of dispersing R. dominica to semiochemicals emitted by live males placed on different plant species. Results showed that both sexes of R. dominica responded to plant volatiles, but responses were strongest to seeds of wheat, a plant species judged to be most suitable for beetle development due to the number of progeny produced on the plant species. Similarly, insects reared on wheat were heavier than those reared on less suitable materials. In general, behavioral responses by males to plant volatiles were faster than responses by females. Responses of conspecifics to aggregation pheromones produced by males feeding on different host materials were skewed toward females although both sexes were attracted. Male R. dominica feeding on wheat recruited more conspecifics than beetles feeding on less suitable hosts (acorns, cowpeas, peanut, and potato tubers).  相似文献

The insecticidal effect of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Ascomycota: Hypocreaes) in combination with three diatomaceous earth (DE) formulations against adults of the granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was tested in the laboratory. The three DEs were Insecto™, SilicoSec® and PyriSec®. The fungus was applied at 400 ppm alone, or in combination with 200 ppm of each of the three DEs. Mortality was measured after 7 d of exposure. Bioassays were conducted at three temperatures 20, 25 and 30 °C and two relative humidities (rh) 55% and 75%. On wheat treated with B. bassiana alone, mortality was higher at 55% than at 75% rh. Also, the fungus alone was less effective at 20 °C than at the other two temperatures tested, but mortality did not exceed 52% for any of the conditions tested. Similar mortality levels were also noted on wheat treated with each of the three DEs alone. The simultaneous presence of B. bassiana and DE increased weevil mortality. In this combination, mortality was higher at high temperatures and low rh, and this effect was similar for all DEs tested. Progeny production on wheat treated with B. bassiana was higher that the respective progeny counts in the DE-treated wheat. The results indicate that a combination of B. bassiana and DEs is effective against S. granarius, under a broad range of temperature and rh levels in stored wheat.  相似文献

Effects of diatomoceous earth on water content of Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Col., Curculionidae) and its possible use in stored product protection Increased problems caused by application of chemical pesticides within pest protection has led to the demand for non‐polluting, biologically specific active countermeasures. This study aimed to test the possible use of diatomaceous earth against Sitophilus granarius. It will also examine the physiological effects of amorphous diatomaceous earth against this insect. After 2 weeks, 100% mortality was observed of the adults treated with 2 g Fossil Shield® per kilogram wheat, at 11–12% corn moisture content and relative humidity of about 62 ± 2%. The rise in grain moisture and relative humidity decreased the effectiveness of the Fossil Shield®. It was observed, that the diatomaceous earth reduced the number of adult granary weevils and increased the mortality rate at development stages, but they did not completely prevent the hatching of the next generation. After contact with diatomaceous earth, the individuals of S. granarius had lost weight and reduced their water content, respectively. The adults significantly lost weight and body water after 1 day exposure to Fossil Shield®. This showed that silica dusts break the water barrier of the cuticle. However, it increases the transpiration rate of water across the cuticle and several insects died through dehydration. At higher relative humidity diatomaceous earth was less effective toward S. granarius, because there was a lower permeability for water across the cuticle. This delays or rather prevents the drying action of diatomaceous earths. Furthermore, the addition of food affected the effectiveness of dusts against S. granarius. A lot of stored product beetles are able to produce metabolic water in the feed substrates. This ability protects them and works contrary to the loss of water.  相似文献

The objective of the present investigation was to determine the effects of temperature on the granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius L., in the laboratory so that forecasting models based on heat accumulation units could be developed for the pest. Development of S. granarius reared on wheat grains was studied at three constant temperatures (15, 20 and 25?°C) and relative humidity of 70?±?5%. The developmental time was significantly decreased with the increase in temperature. The developmental threshold temperatures estimated for egg, larva, pupa and from egg to adult were 7.79, 7.31, 14.08 and 9.97?°C, respectively. Based on these thresholds, the developmental stages, respectively, needed 92.75, 393.78, 45.04 and 562.36?day degrees to complete their development. Also, about nine generations were calculated for the pest per year under Assiut prevailing conditions. It seems that temperature of 25?°C is the most favourable developmental temperature.  相似文献

Data from 24 wild populations of hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus)in south Asia are used to test hypotheses seeking to explain variation in troop structure and the incidence of infanticide. The occurrence of infanticide is associated with a one-male troop structure and not with a high density. The density, predation, and economic-advantage hypotheses, as explanations for the occurrence of one-male and multimale troops, are not supported by the review. However, the monopolization hypothesis is not contradicted; the number of adult males per troop is significantly correlated with troop size and with the number of adult females per troop. Therefore it is suggested that a one-male troop structure will arise if a male is able to monopolize a group of females, a multimale troop if he cannot. One-male troops may predispose to infanticide because of high variance in male mating success and high intermale competition between groups rather than within troops. If female dispersion determines troop structure, it is speculated that females could manipulate males to form a multimale society if the advantages in terms of infant survival and intertroop conflict exceeded the costs in terms of not producing infanticidal “sexy sons.”  相似文献

The behavior of male and female Octodon degus (Hystricognathi; Octodontidae) was studied in captivity to examine the occurrence of non-parental infanticide, which involves the killing of immature infants by adult conspecifics other than the genetic parents. Sexually inexperienced male and female, and lactating female degus were tested for their behavior toward genetically unrelated, and socially unfamiliar, degu pups in a neutral arena. No male or female degu showed any sign of aggression toward the pups. Lactating females tended to exhibit the shortest latency to first behavioral interaction with the pup and the highest rate of social interactions with the pup, and they spent a relatively high proportion of their time in proximity with the pup. In contrast, males tended to show the longest latency to first pup contact and a reduced rate of interactions with the pup, and they spent a relatively small fraction of their time with the pup. The behavior of non-breeding females seemed intermediate between that of males and lactating females. Given that social and ecological conditions posed to promote non-parental infanticide in other rodents seemed not particularly different from what is known of degu biology, ecology, and social behavior, lack of degu infanticide may reflect phylogenetic inertia instead of an absence of conditions favoring infanticide. Single parasite species often have a range of different hosts which vary in their ability to sustain the parasite. When foraging for food, alternative hosts with similar feeding modes may compete for the infective stages of trophically transmitted parasites. If some of the infective stages end up in unsuitable hosts, transmission of the parasite to the focal host is decreased. I studied whether the presence of conspecifics alters the probability of an uninfected susceptible recipient Daphnia becoming infected by a microparasite and if this effect depends on whether the added conspecifics themselves are susceptible or resistant to infection. The presence of both susceptible and resistant conspecifics decreased the probability of infection in recipients. This effect was dependent on the density of the conspecifics but was not found to be related to their size. In addition, when Daphnia were placed in medium derived from crowded Daphnia populations, the probability of infection in recipients decreased as compared to that in standard medium. This implies that decreases in transmission probability are not caused by dilution of spores through food competition only, but also by indirect interference mediated through infochemicals released by Daphnia. Since Daphnia have been found to respond to crowding by decreasing their filtering rate, the decrease in transmission is probably caused by decreased intake of spores in crowded conditions. The presence of conspecifics can thus decrease microparasite transmission in Daphnia which may have important consequences for epidemiology and evolution of Daphnia parasites.  相似文献

Varying concentrations of powdered leaves of Eucalyptus and Mentha and rhizomes of Curcuma were evaluated in controlling Tyrophagus putrescentiae in wheat flour. At higher concentrations, all these plant materials significantly decreased the population build-up of the mite. Eucalyptus and Mentha leaf powders were effective at concentrations ranging from 100 to 5% in bringing about a decrease in the fecundity of the mite and reducing the egg numbers to 51.66 and 25.49 per female, respectively, as compared to 98.16 eggs per female in the controls. Rhizomes of Curcuma were effective even at a concentration of 0.1% reducing the egg laying to 7.66 eggs per female in wheat flour. These materials were more deleterious to immature stages (ova and larvae) than to the mature stages of T. putrescentiae. When tested on whole grains of wheat these plant materials showed more pronounced effects in controlling the mite population compared to that in wheat flour. Curcuma rhizomes were the most promising for possible use against T. putrescentiae.  相似文献

The prefeeding behaviours of adult crucifer flea beetles, Phyllotreta cruciferae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Alticinae), were determined on seedlings of the host plant, Brassica napus, and compared to behaviors on seedlings of the nonhost crucifers, Crambe abyssinica, Sinapis alba, and Camelina sativa. Three stages of prefeeding behaviour, i.e., acclimation, stimulation, and initial feeding, were distinguished through observation of filmed beetles. Both antennal and tarsal chemoreceptors are important in determination of host plant quality by the crucifer flea beetle. The results of this study suggest that the sequence of prefeeding behaviors plays a crucial role in the onset of feeding. Differences in time spent on plant tissue and the frequency and duration of prefeeding behaviors provide insight into possible mechanisms of resistance to flea beetles in the non-Brassica crucifers. The nonpreferred hosts C. abyssinica and S. alba contain deterrent phytochemicals that partially inhibit feeding. These deterrent compounds appear to be volatile in nature in S. alba but nonvolatile in C. abyssinica. CFB resistance in the nonhost C. sativa may result from either the presence of repellent or the absence of stimulatory volatile phytochemicals.  相似文献

Amylases from adults of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and S. granarius (L.) were purified by using a sequential procedure of ammonium sulfate precipitation, glycogen-complex formation, and ion exchange chromatography. Amylase of S. oryaze was purified 47.4-fold to a specific activity of 478 units/mg protein. One amylase unit equals 1 mg maltose hydrate produced/min at 30°C. Amylase of S. granarius was purified 85.4-fold to a specific activity of 453 units/mg protein. Amylase of S. oryzae had a Km of 0.173% for soluble starch and consisted of two anionic isozyrnes with isoelectric points of pH 3.70 and pH 3.76. Amylase of S. granarius had a Km of 0.078% for starch and was a single protein with an isoelectric point of pH 3.76. Purified amylases of both species had molecular weights of 56,000 estimated by sodium dodecyl sulfatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, were activated by chloride, and had double energies of activation calculated from Arrhenius plots. Based on fresh weights of adults feeding on whole wheat through 10 weeks of age, S. oryzae contained three-fold and eight-fold more amylase than S. granarius and S. zeamais Motschulsky, respectively. High amylase levels in S. oryzae may provide this species with an adaptive advantage when feeding on cereals containing naturally occurring amylase inhibitors.  相似文献

Host recognition was examined in Lariophagus distinguendus (Förster), a parasitoid of larvae of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius (L.) that live endophytically in wheat grains. On encountering a grain infested with S. granarius, females of L. distinguendus behave in a set sequence. First they show antennal drumming on the grain, second they tap with the tip of the abdomen on the grain surface, third they drill into the grain and then insert their ovipositor. Bioassays revealed that drumming and drilling was stimulated by non-volatile chemicals present on the grain-host complex. Host faeces and herbivore damaged grain material stimulated the most activity, followed by artificially damaged grain, and healthy grain. This is the first report on non-volatile chemicals released from herbivore-damaged seeds as signals for foraging parasitoids. Volatile chemicals from the faeces alone were not active. Experiments on the use of physical cues revealed that the presence of a three-dimensional structure increased the response towards chemicals from the faeces. The shape (ovoid or rectangular solid) and colour (brown or white) of the structure had no impact. Thus, physical cues alone were insufficient to stimulate host recognition behaviour, but acted by increasing the response towards the chemical stimuli.  相似文献

Since Jones et al. (2000) drew attention to a "new" type of glume wheat from Neolithic and Bronze Age sites in northern Greece, several finds of this morphologically distinct tetraploid wheat form have been made across central and southeastern Europe. Charred remains of this wheat, dating from 819–1031 cal b.c., have also been discovered in a storage pit at late Bronze Age Stillfried, eastern Austria. As both chaff and grains were found, it was not only possible to match the diagnostic features of the spikelet bases to the "new" form, but also to examine the grains, which are strikingly long, slender and flat. A dorsal ridge is absent and there is no hump above the embryo. The embryo angle is relatively low and compression lines are much more distinct. Within the Stillfried store "new" glume wheat grains were also easily separable from two-grained einkorn and spelt grains. The morphology of the grains is not inconsistent with the suggestion that the "new" type glume wheat might correspond to modern Triticum timopheevi. In Stillfried "new" glume wheat was grown as a winter crop, and it seems to have been cultivated as a maslin (mixed crop) together with T. monococcum (einkorn).  相似文献

During the mating season, male desert scorpions are often found wandering through dune environments, presumably in search of female conspecifics. For a male desert scorpion, finding a receptive female is a potentially difficult and hazardous task, suggesting that wandering by the male may actually be a form of guided mate searching. In this study we examined whether male giant hairy desert scorpions (Hadrurus arizonensis) were capable of trailing female conspecifics using a Y-maze choice test. In three separate experiments, a significant proportion of male scorpions preferred the arm of the maze that a reproductive female scorpion had walked down. Male scorpions did not prefer maze arms that male conspecifics had walked down, indicating that this response was sex specific. When the substrate was repeatedly exposed to a reproductive female, males took significantly longer to complete the Y-maze test, exhibited an increase in pausing behavior, and displayed precourtship behaviors and a novel lunging behavior resembling sex-specific mate seizing behavior. The results from this study suggest that male H. arizonensis can orient and respond to substrate-borne signals from female conspecifics that are likely chemical in origin.  相似文献

We report the first case of non-parental infanticide in the Black-billed Magpie Pica pica. Using a video camera installed in the victims’ nest, we recorded repeated visits (over 4 days) of an adult (each time one bird) who attacked six nestlings at each visit until they died or were evicted. The nest was one of 58 nests filmed over four breeding seasons. Collected evidence suggests that the perpetrator(s) might have been the female breeder of the neighbouring nest, possibly also her male partner. The parental female aggressively attacked the perpetrator. Post-infanticide expansion of breeding territory by the suspected perpetrator is the hypothetical ultimate explanation of the observed infanticide. Movie clips from inside the nest are shown at: , , , and .  相似文献

Infanticide is the killing of infants by conspecifics, and may be direct or indirect; and parental or non‐parental. Explanations for such behaviours range from forcing females with young back into heat, resource recycling in times of shortage and elimination of competitors. Though moderately well understood in some mammal groups, reports of infanticide in hystricomorph rodents are often contradictory and invariably based on captive observations, raising questions about the naturality of the behaviour and the conclusions derived from them. Here, we report the first wild observation of direct infanticide and cannibalism of two juvenile Azara's Agoutis Dasyptocta azarae by a group of adults in Paraguay, confirming that such behaviours also occur under natural conditions.  相似文献

Gametophytic cytokinesis is essential for the development and function of the male and female gametophytes. We have previously described the isolation and characterisation of gemini pollen 1 (gem1) that acts gametophytically to disturb asymmetric division and cytokinesis at pollen mitosis I (PMI) in Arabidopsis. Here we describe the genetic and cytological analysis of an independent gametophytic mutant, gem2, with similar characteristics to gem1, but which maps to a different genetic locus. gem2 shows reduced genetic transmission through both male and female gametes and leads to the production of divided or twin-celled pollen. Developmental analysis revealed that gem2 does not affect karyokinesis at PMI, but leads to repositioning of the cell plate, and partial or complete failure of cytokinesis, resulting in symmetrical divisions or binucleate pollen grains, respectively. Symmetrical divisions lead to altered pollen cell fate with both sister cells displaying vegetative cell fate. Moreover, we demonstrate that the predominant female defect in gem2 is a lack of cellularisation of the embryo sac during megagametogenesis. GEM2 therefore defines an independent genetic locus that is involved in the correct specification of both male and female gametophytic cytokinesis.  相似文献

In assays investigating the abdominal sternal secretion of the cockroach Eurycotis floridana, it was determined that the secretion provides an effective deterrent against potential predators. Analysis of grooming patterns of Peromyscus leucopus mice revealed significant increases in mouth grooming and loss of coordination following exposure to E. floridana secretion. Mouse–cockroach interactions also changed following exposure of the mouse to the spray, as the mouse incited fewer interactions and more frequently struck with its forepaws than with its mouth. Monomorium sp. and Camponotus sp. ants also were repelled by the secretion, and Periplaneta americana were significantly irritated by the application of E. floridana secretion. The secretion is able to deter without physical contact, presumably via noxious volatiles. Eurycotis floridana is capable of accurately aiming the discharge as well as ejecting it several times the length of its body. It also was found that E. floridana exhibits autotoxic responses following contact with the secretion of conspecifics.  相似文献

Optimal foraging and optimal oviposition are two major forces leading to plant selection by insect females, but the contribution of these forces to the host‐selection process has been little studied for sucking herbivores. We studied feeding and oviposition behavior of a global pest, the bronze bug, Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae), using dual‐choice bioassays to evaluate the preference of females between host species, developmental leaf stage, or prior plant exposure to conspecifics. We assessed the link between these preferences and the performance of the offspring, by comparing survival and developmental time of nymphs reared on the various treatments. Finally, we compared the composition of the leaf wax of healthy and damaged leaves, and tested the effects of leaf wax on female preference behavior. Using healthy adult leaves of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. (Myrtaceae) as a reference, we found that females prefer to feed on Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden and E. tereticornis adult leaves that had been previously damaged by female conspecifics, whereas they reject juvenile leaves of E. tereticornis as food. Females also prefer to oviposit on leaves previously damaged by conspecifics but they rejected E. grandis as oviposition substrate. Nymphal performance varied among leaf treatments, suggesting a correlation with oviposition preference (but not feeding preference). Epicuticular wax extracts from damaged leaves contained higher concentrations of long‐chain, saturated linear alkanes, aldehydes, and alcohols than extracts from undamaged leaves. However, a choice assay failed to demonstrate an oviposition preference based on leaf surface wax chemistry. We discuss these findings in the context of the preference‐performance relationship.  相似文献

Researchers have proposed several hypotheses to explain pair-living in primates. In particular, when males are not involved in direct parental care, pair-living may be related to female dispersal, infanticide prevention, or male mate/resource defense. We aimed to evaluate, through a better understanding of the ranging patterns of avahis, which hypotheses may best account for pair-living in these nocturnal lemurs. We collected focal observations over 26 nights, June–September 2004, in a littoral forest (Sainte Luce, southeastern Madagascar) on 4 adult radiocollared avahis [Avahi laniger (Tattersall, I. (1982). The Primates of Madagascar. Columbia University Press, New York.) or Avahi meridionalis (Zaramody in Primate Reports 74:9–22, 2006)]. We followed 2 males and 2 females from 2 groups: B, a male-female couple, and A, comprising the parental pair and 1-yr-old female offspring. The adult females birthed in August. We recorded resting and feeding tree points (via global positioning system) for home range calculation through minimum convex polygon and kernel methods. We provide the first quantitative information on the ranging behavior of 2 male and 2 female avahis. Home range/daily path length values (means) are higher than the ones previously reported for the same and other folivorous pair-living lemur species. On average, the 2 females spent more time feeding and traveled shorter distances than the 2 males did. Male–female cohesion (mean values), possibly enhanced by offspring presence, was higher in A and after births than in B and before births, respectively. Although male avahis may be forced into pair-living owing to energy constraints related to size, locomotion, and diet, females might accept pair-living in exchange for indirect territory defense and mate guarding.  相似文献
