In milk-fed calves, quantification of the milk that enters the rumen (ruminal milk volume, RMV) because of malfunction of the esophageal groove reflex may explain part of the variability observed between animals in their growth performance. The RMV can directly be quantified by adding an indigestible marker to the diet and measuring its recovery in the rumen at slaughter, but this technique cannot be repeated in time in the same animal. The objective of the study was to evaluate three indirect methods for estimating RMV. The first method was based on the assumption that ruminal drinking delays and limits acetaminophen appearance in blood after ingestion of milk supplemented with acetaminophen. The second method was based on a negative linear relationship between RMV and urinary recovery of non-metabolizable monosaccharides (3-O-methylglucose, l-rhamnose and d-xylose) added to the milk, owing to rumen fermentation. In the third method, RMV was calculated as the difference between total milk intake and the increase in abomasal milk volume (AMV) at feeding, measured through ultrasonography shortly after feeding, or estimated from the mathematical extrapolation of AMV to feeding time, based on consecutive measurements. These methods were tested in three experiments where calves (n=22, 10 and 13) were bucket fed or partly tube fed (i.e. by inserting milk replacer into the rumen via a tube to mimic ruminal drinking). In addition, Co-EDTA and Cr-EDTA were used as an indigestible marker in one experiment to trace bucket-fed or tube-fed milk replacer, respectively, to measure RMV. The relationship between AMV measured by ultrasonography and AMV measured at slaughter improved when kinetics of AMV were extrapolated to the time of slaughter by mathematical modeling (error between predicted and measured AMV equaled 0.49 l). With this technique, RMV during feeding averaged 17% and 24% of intake in Experiments 2 and 3, respectively. Plasma acetaminophen kinetics and recovery of non-metabolizable monosaccharides in urine were partly associated with ruminal drinking, but these techniques are not considered quantitatively accurate without further information of rumen degradation and absorption. The recovery of indigestible marker measured at slaughter gave a quantitative estimate of RMV (2% in Experiment 3), but improper measurement of emptying rate of fluid from the rumen may lead to underestimation. In conclusion, measuring changes in AMV by ultrasonography, in response to milk feeding, was the most promising indirect method to quantify RMV in veal calves.  相似文献

Adolescent growth in height, fatness, and fat patterning was investigated in a sample of 79 rural South African black children studied longitudinally from 6–18 years. Data were analyzed relative to peak height velocity (PHV) to identify the phenomenon of “compensatory” growth in height during adolescence and to describe changes in fatness and fat patterning. Compensatory growth following PHV was clearly observed relative to NHANES data for African-Americans in that Z-scores for height at the start of the adolescent growth spurt were greater than those at the end of the spurt. Statistically significant differences in fatness and centralization between males and females did not occur until about 2 years after PHV was attained. Centralization of fat occurred in both sexes but moreso in males. The lack of centralization in females was due to relatively greater triceps skinfold velocities. The rapid gain in post-PHV fatness in females may represent a physiological adaptation to an energetically sub-optimal environment, buffering the energetic costs of reproduction. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In order to understand the physical growth and sexual development of contemporary adolescents, a cross-sectional survey was conducted during the period September 1983 to May 1984. The population came from all the pupils from 4th grade up, and all the junior and senior high students of Changhua City. By using stratified cluster sampling, 1419 boys and 1599 girls participated, ranging in age from 8 to 19 years. Body weight and height were measured. Growth spurt is a unique event during adolescence. It is well shown in the distance curves and pseudo-velocity curves of body height and weight. In boys, the growth spurt of height spanned from 12.0 to 14.8 years, with peak height velocity (PHV) at 13.5 years. In girls it was from 10.0 to 12.6 years and peaked at 11.5 years. The growth spurt of weight occurred from 12.0 to 15.9 years in boys with peak weight velocity (PWV) at 14.5 years, while girls had a growth spurt at 10.0-12.7 years with PWV at 11.5 years. Girls entered into the growth spurt about 2 years earlier, and also entered into PHV, PWV, two and three years earlier respectively than boys, while boys had a more intense and longer growth during the growth spurt than girls. Between 10.0-13.0 years girls were taller than boys, and between 12.0-13.0 years they were heavier than boys. However, from 13.5 years onward girls were soon surpassed by boys both in height and weight. Growth in height after 16.5 years in boys and after 15.5 in girls was minimal. Growth in weight in boys also became minimal after 16.5 years while girls weight even dropped a little bit after 16.5 years. At the mean age of 17.5 years, boys were 168.1 cm, girls were 156.2 cm in average, boys being 12 cm taller than girls after reaching their final height.  相似文献

There are numerous studies concerning sexual dimorphism in body proportions, but only a few have investigated growth in the relative length of particular segments of the upper and lower limbs during adolescence. The aim of the study is an assessment of sex differences of longitudinal growth in the relative length of the forearm and knee height among adolescents. Sample involved 121 boys and 111 girls, participants of the Wroclaw Growth Study, examined annually between 8 and 18 years of age. Sexual dimorphism in six ratios: forearm length and knee height relatively to: trunk, height, and limb length were analyzed using a two‐way analysis of variance with repeated measurements. The sex and age relative to an estimate of maturity timing (3 years before, and after age class at peak height velocity [PHV]) were independent variables. All of the ratios showed significant sex differences in interaction with age relative to age at PHV. The relative length of the forearm, in boys, did not change significantly with the years relative to age at PHV, whereas in girls, was the lowest in the two first age classes and afterward significantly increased just 1 year before and during the adolescent growth spurt, remaining unchanged in further age classes. For relative knee height no clear pattern for sex differences was noticed. It is proposed that relatively longer forearms, particularly in relation to the trunk in girls, could have evolved as an adaptation to more efficient infant carrying and protection during breastfeeding.  相似文献

Tables for human height at age values by Kunze and Murken are submitted to mathematical approximations applying the 2-step-model introduced by Sager (1981). The basic term reflects growth as expected when a growth spurt is lacking which may be the case for children with chromosomal aberrations. The 2nd term comprises an expression for the growth spurt proper thus allowing an evaluation for the intensity of the spurt. The approximations as gained with nonlinear regressions show very close agreement with the measurements. Besides the growth curve its first derivative--the growth velocity or increase--is calculated and represented graphically. Moreover the results and their relative amounts against the final values at adulthood are compared for nine height at age tables treated hitherto with the same growth model.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the timing, magnitude and duration of the pubertal spurt for short normal and average height girls, to compare these with Tanner's standard and to investigate predictors of pubertal growth. METHODS: The growth of 46 short normal and 55 control girls, identified at school entry, was monitored throughout puberty. Height and weight were measured at 6-month intervals from which body mass index (BMI) was derived. Annual velocities were calculated and used to estimate the age and magnitude of peak height velocity (PHV). Age of menarche was recorded to the nearest month. Parents provided information on the child's medical and social history. RESULTS: The mean age at PHV, the magnitude of PHV and age at menarche were similar for both groups and close to Tanner's 50th centile values. Pre-pubertal BMI predicted age at menarche for short and control girls, accounting for 17% of the variance. There was a tendency for early maturing girls of average stature to have greater PHV. However, this relationship was not observed in short girls, nor did any other variable, genetic or environmental, predict the timing or magnitude of their pubertal spurt. CONCLUSIONS: Delayed puberty in short normal girls is unlikely and their growth during puberty is comparable to girls of average height. The pubertal variables measured remain close to Tanner's original standards for both groups, suggesting the lack of a secular trend towards earlier puberty in girls. The onset of menstruation is influenced by pre-pubertal BMI. However, the clinician should be aware that short normal girls have normal pubertal growth and that no genetic or environmental variable can predict the timing or magnitude of their growth spurt.  相似文献

Measures of maturity provide windows into the timing and tempo of childhood growth and maturation. Delayed maturation in a single child, or systemically in a population, can result from either genetic or environmental factors. In terms of the skeleton, delayed maturation may result in short stature or indicate another underlying issue. Thus, prediction of the timing of a maturational spurt is often desirable in order to determine the likelihood that a child will catch up to their chronological age peers. Serial data from the Fels Longitudinal Study were used to predict future skeletal age conditional on current skeletal age and to predict the timing of maturational spurts. For children who were delayed relative to their chronological age peers, the likelihood of catch‐up maturation increased through the average age of onset of puberty and decreased prior to the average age of peak height velocity. For boys, the probability of an imminent maturational spurt was higher for those who were less mature. For girls aged 11 to 13 years, however, this probability was higher for those who were more mature, potentially indicating the presence of a skeletal maturation plateau between multiple spurts. The prediction model, available on the web, is most relevant to children of European ancestry living in the Midwestern US. Our model may also provide insight into the tempo of maturation for children in other populations, but must be applied with caution if those populations are known to have high burdens of environmental stressors not typical of the Midwestern US. Ultrasonic determination of elastic properties in human craniofacial cortical bone is problematic because of a lack of information about the principal material axes, and because the cortex is often thinner than in long bones. This study investigated solutions that permit reasonable determination of elastic properties in the human mandible. We tested whether ultrasonic velocities could be reliably measured in cylindrical samples of aluminum and mandibular bone, and the effects of reduced specimen thickness. Results indicted that (1) varying shape had minimal effects on ultrasonic velocities or derived elastic properties, and (2) ultrasonic velocities have relatively increased measurement error as propagation distances decreased. The increased error in velocity measurements of mandibular cortical specimens of less than 1.2 mm in thickness should be considered when assessing the reliability of single measurements.  相似文献

Background

Entering puberty is an important milestone in reproductive life and secular changes in the timing of puberty may be an important indicator of the general reproductive health in a population. Too early puberty is associated with several psychosocial and health problems. The aim of our study was to determine if the age at onset of pubertal growth spurt (OGS) and at peak height velocity (PHV) during puberty show secular trends during four decades in a large cohort of school children.

Methods and Findings

Annual measurements of height were available in all children born from 1930 to 1969 who attended primary school in the Copenhagen Municipality. 135,223 girls and 21,612 boys fulfilled the criteria for determining age at OGS and age at PHV. These physiological events were used as markers of pubertal development in our computerized method in order to evaluate any secular trends in pubertal maturation during the study period (year of birth 1930 to 1969). In this period, age at OGS declined statistically significantly by 0.2 and 0.4 years in girls and boys, respectively, whereas age at PHV declined statistically significantly by 0.5 and 0.3 years in girls and boys, respectively. The decline was non-linear with a levelling off in the children born between 1940 and 1955. The duration of puberty, as defined by the difference between age at OGS and age at PHV, increased slightly in boys, whereas it decreased in girls.

Conclusion

Our finding of declining age at OGS and at PHV indicates a secular trend towards earlier sexual maturation of Danish children born between 1930 and 1969. Only minor changes were observed in duration of puberty assessed by the difference in ages at OGS and PHV.  相似文献

To determine the cardiorespiratory response to maximal exercise before, during and after the pubescent growth spurt, thirty boys were tested at yearly intervals over a period of six consecutive years. For each individual, peak height velocity (PHV) was determined. The age at PHV (X = 13.6 years) was taken as a standard of maturation. The results from all subjects at 1.5 and 0.5 years before and 0.5 and 1.5 years after PHV are presented. The highest oxygen uptake (VO2) obtained during an incremental bicycle ergometer test to voluntary exhaustion was taken as peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak). Across each of the four years studied, mean VO2 peak (min = 49.6; max = 52.5 ml.kg-1.min-1) and mean heart rate (HR) at VO2 peak (min = 190; max = 192) did not change significantly as a function of PHV. On the other hand, the respiratory quotient at VO2 peak increased considerably from mean minima and maxima of 0.99 and 1.01 before PHV to 1.07 and 1.10 after PHV. Ventilatory equivalent for VO2 (VE/VO2), taken as an indicator of ventilatory economy, seemed to be unaffected by the maturation process. The steepest increase in circumpubertal oxygen pulse was found one year after PHV. Average stability coefficients (r), calculated from the inter-years correlations were high for height (r = 0.95), weight (r = 0.92), HR at VO2 peak (r = 0.74), VO2 peak in 1/min (r = 0.71), oxygen pulse (r = 0.68) and tidal volume (r = 0.64).

Secular changes of head measurements (frontal breadth, bizygomatic breadth, bigonial breadth, auricular height, morphological facial height, lower face height) are analysed. The data are based on the Jena anthropological investigations of school children from 1975 and 1985. The inclusion of the data of the Jena longitudinal study carried out since 1985 allows an analysis of the further secular trend. Noticeable changes are proved in most of the analysed traits (frontal breadth, bigonial breadth, auricular height, morphological facial height, lower face height) between 1975 and 1985. The vertical measurements show greater percentage differences than the horizontal measurements, which, among other things, results in a relative narrowing of the face. In some head measurements (frontal breadth, bigonial breadth, auricular height) the trends continue after 1985. The secular trends show no obvious connection with the temporal acceleration of the dentition in the probands of the longitudinal study. However, a connection seems to be possible between the accelerated puberal growth spurt of the body height and the puberal growth spurt in some head dimensions.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism depends on age. It can be analysed within a population by a comparison of sex-specific body measurements based on cross-sectional samples. We analysed four length measurements, three circumferences, and one skinfold diameter of a representative cross-sectional sample of healthy German subjects aged 0 to 65 years. We here report that sexual dimorphism of these body measurements already is present in newborns. The percentages of anthropometric differences between female and male subjects behave in a specific pattern during growth age from birth up to adolescence. Girls are born smaller on an average, but they have a more accelerated growth than boys. Girls reach the peak of their adolescent growth spurt earlier in their chronological age. This means that their biological age at this time is at least 2 years older than that of boys of the same chronological age. This sex-specifically differential onset of the adolescent growth spurt, and its peak, as well as the differential decrease of growth velocity cause a dramatic change in sexual dimorphism. This change is clearly shown in this cross-sectional study. Except for the subcutaneous fat layer, there is a clear male growth advantage in all of the measurements investigated after the peak of the adolescent growth spurt. The largest differences between the measurements of both sexes in favour of the male sex are reached at young adult age. In the further course of life, the anthropometrical differences between the sexes decrease again. Sexual dimorphism within a population at a defined chronological age is therefore not only the result of a developing sex-specific physique, but also the result of a sex-specific growth velocity during the successive stages of biological development. Interestingly, we found that the sex-specific velocity of physical development, and by this the development of sexual dimorphism, proceeds differently in the tall and slim leptomorphic individuals in comparison to the smaller and more corpulent pyknomorphic individuals.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe motor nerve conduction velocity in upper and lower extremities in sportsmen. Fifteen high-level field hockey players, seventeen soccer players and ten tennis players were recruited from the Polish National Field Hockey League, Polish Soccer League Clubs, and Polish Tennis Association clubs, respectively. The control group comprised of seventeen healthy, non-active young men. Nerve conduction velocities of ulnar and tibial nerve were assessed with NeuroScreen electromyograph (Toennies, Germany) equipped with standard techniques of supramaximal percutaneus stimulation with constant current and surface electrodes. No significant differences in motor nerve conduction velocities were found between dominant and non-dominant limbs in each studied group. Ulnar nerve conduction velocity measured from above elbow to below elbow was significantly lower only in the field hockey players' dominant limb. Tibial conduction velocity of the field hockey players' non-dominant lower limb was higher in comparison to the tennis players and the control group. There was no significant correlation between body mass and NCV as well as between height of subjects and NCV in both athletes or non-athletes. A slight trend towards a lower TCV values in athletes with longer duration of practicing sport was found. It was most pronounced in the non-dominant lower extremity of field hockey players.  相似文献

Growth of man differs basically from that of all animals - perhaps except some species of primates - by demonstrating a puberal growth spurt. This behaviour is well known but was hardly ever analyzed in a mathematical manner. The growth spurt is indeed difficult to grasp and this all the more as it shows varying forms of appearance. This becomes evident by the investigation of height values for normal and growth-restricted children as is the case with genetic diseases. From these variants, PELZ and SAGER came to the conclusion of setting up differentiated forms of growth spurts with adequate definitions in mathematical formulation. In this contribution, the models of human height growth and height velocity as practiced at Zurich (working group PRADER), London (working group TANNER) and Rostock (PELZ, SAGER, EYERMANN) are recalled and scrutinized as to the applicability of the new definitions. After the somewhat difficult comparisons of the model structures meditations are focussed at the proposals for the definition of the duration and the intensity of the growth spurt leading to quite different conceptions. Relative agreement is present for the time of the onset of the spurt whilst larger differences appear for the end of the puberal phase. A complete coincidence can hardly be reached but at least some light is thrown on this intricate problem by analyzing the different points of view.  相似文献

We have analyzed longitudinal twin data by using a multivariate normal model to identify and quantify genetic effects over time on two main aspects of growth, height and skeletal maturity. The largest genetic contribution to the variance in both height and skeletal maturity coincided with the respective ages of peak growth velocity. The highest genetic covariance between these two traits coincided with the age of greatest acceleration of growth in height. These findings imply the existence of regulatory or structural genes that influence growth in both height and skeletal maturity. We also found sex differences in the rapport between velocities for height and skeletal maturity. These are consistent with a predominant role of estrogen in accelerating skeletal maturation in females, and the existence of additional mechanisms in males which may promote growth in height independently of the effects of gonadal sex steroids.  相似文献

In boys, the ages at which growth rates for body weight, height, VO2max, maximum O2 pulse and VImax reached their peaks were approximately the same (means and SD: 14.64 +/- 0.98, 14.67 +/- 0.99, 14.71 +/- 1.59, 14.38 +/- 1.36 and 14.64 +/- 1.42 years respectively). There was a positive relationship between the peak velocities of functional capacity indicators (VO2max 0.79 +/- 0.19 1.min-1.year-1, O2 pulse max 4.1 +/- 1.20 ml.year-1, VImax 27.3 +/- 7.15 l.min-1.year-1) and the peak growth velocity of weight and/or height (weight 9.1 +/- 1.92 kg.year-1, height 9.8 +/- 1.92 cm.year-1). A positive relationship between the age at peak velocity of VO2max and O2 pulse max with the age at peak velocity for body weight was also found (r = 0.524 and 0.400 respectively). No relationship was revealed between the age at peak velocity on the one hand and the peak velocities of body weight, height, VO2max, O2 pulse or VImax on the other. Moderate training did not influence acceleration in growth--the age at peak velocity and the peaks of the growth rate did not differ in groups with a different regime of exercise (higher - n = 8, medium - n = 9, lower - n = 12; the peak velocity of VO2max--means and SD--being 0.85 +/- 0.15, 0.76 +/- 0.22 and 0.78 +/- 0.17.min-1.year-1 respectively).  相似文献

In order to investigate the value of growth hormone (GH) treatment during late puberty, we studied the effect of human GH (hGH) administration (0.85 +/- 0.30 IU/kg/week; range: 0.44-1.28) on height velocity (HV) after the peak of the pubertal growth spurt in a group of 10 (4 girls and 6 boys) short normal children (GH peak after pharmacological stimulation: 15.5 +/- 2.3 ng/ml) with growth retardation (height: 2.6 +/- 0.3 SD) and puberty Tanner stage 4. A group of 10 untreated children, observed prior to the study, served as controls. The children were regularly measured during their pubertal growth spurt, and HV (cm/year) was calculated every 6 months. The pretreatment evaluation consisted of 2 consecutive 6-month periods characterized by a decrease in HV of at least 25%. In the group of selected children, hGH administration was then initiated and growth variables were evaluated after 6 and 12 months of therapy. Skeletal maturation was evaluated at the beginning as well as after 6 months and 12 months of hGH therapy. In the controls, HV (mean +/- SD) had decreased from 8.8 +/- 1.8 to 4.9 +/- 1.4 cm/year during the pretreatment period (in girls from 7.9 +/- 1.4 to 4.1 +/- 0.6 cm/year and in boys from 9.6 +/- 1.6 to 5.8 +/- 1.2 cm/year). During the following semester, HV was 3.3 +/- 0.8 cm/year (girls: 3.4 +/- 1.0 and boys: 3.2 +/- 0.2 cm/year).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In a recently described patient with acid-labile subunit (ALS) deficiency, the inability to form ternary complexes resulted in a marked reduction in circulating total insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, whereas skeletal growth was only marginally affected. To further study the role of circulating versus locally produced IGF-I in skeletal growth in this patient, we now describe in detail growth changes and their relationship with several components of the circulating IGF system. DESIGN AND METHODS: We followed growth and development up to the final height in a patient with complete ALS deficiency and determined both spontaneous and growth hormone (GH)-stimulated changes in the IGF system, including measurements of total, free and bioactive IGF-I, total IGF-II and insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-1, IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-3. RESULTS: The patient had a delayed growth and pubertal onset. Six months of GH treatment had no effect on growth. At the age of 19.3 years, he spontaneously completed puberty and had a normal growth spurt for a late adolescent (peak height velocity of 8.4 cm/year). A normal final height was attained at 21.3 years (167.5 cm; -0.78 SDS). During as well as after puberty, basal levels of total, free and bioactive IGF-I were low, as were total IGF-II, IGFBP-1, IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-3. GH treatment for 6 months normalized free IGF-I and increased bioactive IGF-I, but had no effect on growth velocity. CONCLUSIONS: This case story shows that in the presence of complete ALS deficiency, a height within normal limits can be obtained despite low levels of all forms of circulating IGF-I. Furthermore, the patient presented a delayed but normal growth spurt without any marked increment of circulating IGF-I.  相似文献
