This paper is concerned with relating thermoluminescence to the total free-energy change, G, involved in detrapping a particular electron-hole pair as a photosynthetic sample is warmed from an initial low temperature. It extends a mathematical discussion of four possible mechanisms introduced in an earlier paper [DeVault, Govindjee and Arnold, Proc Nat'l Acad Sci USA 80: 983–987 (1983)]; here, particular attention is paid to the dependence of the absolute temperature of the maximum of a glow-peak, T m , on the total free-energy change, G. The conclusion from the cases studied is that T m =G/(k B W) where G is evaluated at T m , W is a complicated function of temperature and of thermodynamic parameters in the steps of the mechanism, and k B is the Boltzmann constant. If the rate limiting step in the mechanism of detrapping is not preceded by any step in which G is appreciably negative, W is likely to have a value of about 33 and T m is approximately proportional to G. Otherwise W can become much smaller and more strongly dependent on temperature and T m is no longer proportional to G. These conclusions are of significance in lending theoretical support to the practice of inferring redox midpoint potential changes from shifts in T m .  相似文献

Summary The influence of the alcohol concentration on the foaminess, , of-BSA-solutions is considered. This effect is calculated by means of the function (CBSA . f), where f=1 for pure protein solutions and f>1 for alcohol solutions. f is calculated by f = 2TTeff. Here, where TT is the turbidity temperature change due to solvent structure effects and TD, the temperature correction due to alcohol-protein interaction. The constants necessary to calculate TT and TD are tabulated. The agreement between the calculated and measured foaminess , as a function of the n-propanol concentration is satisfactory and for methanol or ethanol excellent.  相似文献

Arsenic speciation data are presented for pore waters squeezed from some native and anthropogenically influenced sediments.Ten stations were sampled with a box corer (to 20 cm) at two British Columbia coastal sites that are influenced by mine-tailings discharges. These are Rupert Inlet and Alice Arm as well as their associated systems of Quatsino Sound/Holberg Inlet and Hastings Arm respectively.Total dissolved arsenic concentrations (As D) usually exhibited subsurface maxima at 5–10 cm and were generally related to solid phase arsenic (As p) levels, but there was also a dependence on the nature of the substrate. Tailings exhibited both the lowest (Rupert Inlet) and the highest (Alice Arm) As D values. Inorganic arsenicals, arsenate (AsV) and arsenite (AsIII) constituted the majority (>90%) of the dissolved species butevery sample contained organoarsenicals. This is the first report of mono-, di- and tri-methylated arsenic species in marine interstitial water.A strong positive correlation between the sum of the methylarsenic compounds (MeAs) and the total dissolved arsenic (As D) was found, indicating in situ microbial methylation similar to that observed in non-aquatic systems. Flux values for arsenic at the sediment-water interface suggest that, at present, there is no significant mobilization of arsenic from these mine-derived sediments into the water column.  相似文献

One of the objectives of microalgal culture is to provide reliable production technology for important live aquaculture feed organisms. Presented here are the results of experiments designed to provide a better understanding of the relationship between inorganic carbon availability and algal production.Our results suggest that through additions of CO2 gas we were able to maintain sufficient dissolved carbon to stabilize outdoor algal cultures. Increases in the rate of addition of CO2 increased levels of dissolved CO2, total dissolved inorganic carbon (CO2), and decreased pH in the growth medium. This translated into improved buffering capacity of the culture medium and higher growth rate. A minimum of 2.4 mM CO2 was found necessary to maintain a maximal growth rate of 0.7 doublings/day. We also found that the increased productivity more than offsets the cost of adding the CO2.  相似文献

The effect of the deficiency in mineral nutrients was investigated in plant species representing various adaptation groups (stress-tolerant, competitive, and ruderal plants). Dry and fresh weight, as well as the length of shoots and underground organs, were determined in 20- to 50-day-old seedlings. The ratio between the dry weights of shoot and root (SRR), relative growth rate (RGR), the rate of total dark respiration (R), gross photosynthesis (P g), and the proportion of the respiratory expenditures to gross photosynthesis (R/P g) were calculated. When affected by a deficiency in mineral nutrients, the weight of the whole plant decreased. In resistant species of clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), this reduction was insignificant, whereas, in the ruderal species amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), it was at its highest. In all the species investigated, the ratio R/P g was 38–46%. Under stress conditions, this index increased. Given a deficiency in mineral nutrients, the changes in SRR, RGR, and R/P g were greater in amaranth, suggesting that this plant species is less tolerant to stress. The correlation between RGR and R observed in amaranth under normal conditions indicates that the major energy expenditures are associated with growth. Under stress conditions, such a correlation was not observed. In more resistant species of clover and alfalfa, a weak positive correlation between RGR and R was observed both under normal and stress conditions. In these species, the deficiency in mineral nutrients probably brought about a reduction in the growth component of total dark respiration and a rise in the adaptation component. The complex of indices (R/P g, RGR, and SRR) and the extent of their variation in the seedlings describe the potential productivity and resistance of particular species to a deficiency in mineral nutrients and may characterize the adaptation type of the plants.  相似文献

The impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 on belowground plant growth is poorly understood relative to its effects on aboveground growth. We carried out a study of the seasonal dynamics of gross root production and death to determine how elevated CO2 affected the dynamics of net and gross root production through a full growing season. We quantified gross root production and root loss from sequential, in situ images of fine roots of t Betula papyrifera in ambient (375 ppm.) and elevated (700 ppm) CO2 atmospheres from 2 weeks following germination through leaf senescence. We found that elevated CO2 led to increases in the magnitude of cumulative gross production (P) and cumulative gross loss (L) of roots. However, the effect of elevated CO2 on these processes was seasonally dependent. Elevated CO2 led to greater levels of enhancement in P early in the growing season, prior to maximum standing root length (NP). In contrast, elevated CO2 led to greater levels of enhancement in L in the last half of the growing season, after maximum NP had been reached. This difference in the timing of when elevated CO2 affects P and L led to a transitory, early enhancement in NP. By the end of the growing season, there was no significant effect of elevated CO2 on NP, and P was 87% greater than NP for ambient CO2 and 117% greater in elevated CO2. We conclude that static assessments of belowground productivity may greatly underestimate gross fine root productivity and turnover and this bias can be exaggerated with elevated CO2.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory responses to exercise in relation to the phase of the menstrual cycle were studied in ten women taking oral contraceptives (P) and in ten women not taking oral contraceptives (NP). Each subject was tested for maximal aerobic capacity ( ) and for 50% exercise in the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle. Since the oral contraceptives would have prevented ovulation a quasi-follicular phase (q-F) and a quasi-luteal phase (q-L) of the menstrual cycle were assumed for P subjects. Exercise was performed on a cycle ergometer at an ambient temperature of 24° C and relative air humidity of 50%. Rectal (T re), mean skin ( ), mean body ( ) temperatures and heart rate (f c) were measured. Sweat rate was estimated by the continuous measurement of relative humidity of air in a ventilated capsule placed on the chest, converted to absolute pressure (PH2Ochest). Gain for sweating was calculated as a ratio of increase inPH2Ochest to the appropriate increase inT re for the whole period of sweating (G) and for unsteady-state (Gu) separately. The did not differ either between the groups of subjects or between the phases of the menstrual cycle. In P, rectal temperature threshold for sweating (T re, td) was 37.85° C in q-L and 37.60° C in q-F (P < 0.01) and corresponded to a significant difference fromT re at rest. TheT re, andf c increased similarly during exercise in q-F and q-L. No menstrual phase-related differences were observed either in the dynamics of sweating or in G. In NP,T re, td was shorter in L than in F (37.70 vs 37.47° C,P<0.02) with a significantly greater value fromT re at rest. The dynamics and G for sweating were also greater in L than in F. The Gu was 36.8 versus 16.6 kPa · ° C–1 (P<0.01) while G was 6.4 versus 3.8 kPa · ° C–1 (P<0.05), respectively. TheT re, andf c increased significantly more in phase F than in phase L. It was concluded that in these women performing moderate exercise, there was a greater temperature threshold and larger gains for sweating in phase L than in phase F. Intake of oral contraceptives reduced the differences in the gains for sweating making the thermoregulatory responses to exercise more uniform.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the thermoregulatory changes induced by 27-h of sleep deprivation (SD) in men at rest both in a comfortable ambient temperature and in cold air. A group of 12 male subjects were placed in a comfortable ambient temperature (dry bulb temperature,T db = 25° C, relative humidity, rh = 40%–50% , clothing insulation = 1 clo) for 1 h and then they were submitted to a standard cold air test in a climatic chamber for 2h (T db=1° C, rh = 40%–50%, wind speed = 0.8 m·s–1, nude), before and after 27 h of sleep deprivation. Thermoregulatory changes (rectal temperature,T re; mean skin temperature, sk; metabolic heat production ) were monitored continuously. At comfortable ambient temperature, no significant change was observed after SD forT re, sk and . During the cold test,T re did not change but sk and were higher after SD (P<0.05). Increased (+ 6%,P < 0.05) was related to earlier and higher shivering, with a possible increase in the sensitivity of the thermoregulatory system as shown by the shorter time to onset of continous shivering (d): 8.66 (SEM 1.33) min versus 28.20 (SEM 1.33) min (P < 0.001) and by a higher sk observed at d: 27.60 (SEM 1.40)° C versus 21.40 (SEM 0.60)° C (P < 0.001). These results were associated with higher cold sensations and shivering following SD. They also suggested that SD modified thermoregulatory responses at a central level especially in a cold environment.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of dissolved greenhouse gases (CH4,CO2 and N2O), NO ,and 13C of CO2 in Lake Biwa during a stagnantperiod was precisely determined. CO2 as well as NO was accumulated in the hypolimnion, whereas NO and CH4concen\-trations were generally higher in theepilimnion than in the hypolimnion. In August, NO andCH4 were ephemerally accumulated at the thermocline. Theconcentration of CH4 always exceeded equilibrium with respectto air/water exchange. N2O was rather uniformly distributed inboth time and space, and remained near equilibrium with respect toair/water exchange. All of these observations are similar to otherstratified, oligotrophic lakes, in which the hypolimnia were welloxygenated. The 13C of CO2 became morenegative with increasing depth, and showed a strong negativecorrelation with apparent oxygen utilization. From the data, the 13Cvalue of organic matter decomposed into CO2 inthe hypolimnion was calculated by isotope mass-balance, and found tobe in a similar range to 13C of phytoplankton and benthic algaeand distinctively higher than 13C of both terrestrial andsedimentary organic matters. This suggests that autochthonous organicmatter was the major source of CO2.  相似文献

Summary The time-course of changes in skeletal muscle pH during arousal from hibernation in the Columbian ground squirrel was studied using31P NMR spectroscopy. In hibernation (T re 7–9°C), shoulder/neck muscle pH was 7.45±0.03 and Im was 0.60. In euthermia (T re 37°C), muscle pH was 7.24±0.05 and Im was 0.75. Thus the overall pH-temperature coefficient was-0.009 pH units/°C, indicating acidification of the muscle in hibernation. During the transition from hibernation to euthermia, however, the muscle shows a nonlinear pattern of pH change. In early arousal (T sh<20–25°C,T re<15°C) muscle pH does not change and muscle Im increases to 0.72. In later arousal (T sh>20–25°C,T re>15°C) muscle pH decreases gradually toward the euthermic value and muscle Im increases only slightly from 0.72 to 0.75. These results support the hypothesis that intracellular acidification of the muscle, present during hibernation, is reversed in early arousal. Summary The effects were studied of varying amounts and forms of N fertilizers on the chemical composition of soil solution and on the uptake of N, K, Na, Ca and Mg by barley.In isolated soil solution the concentrations as well as the ratios of individual cations depended on form and amount of added nitrogen. The concentration of cations increased proportionally with applications of nitrate+sulphate. Cation-activity ratios in isolated soil solution were governed by the ratios of corresponding exchangeable cations. During the entire growth period the absorption by the plants of individual as well as of cations was independent of their concentrations in soil solution. So long as NH4 ions were present in the soil solution, plants with NH4 addition contained less cations than those with NO3 addition. Thereafter the amounts of cations in the plant were closely correlated with N absorption, but not affected by form of applied N. The ratios K/(Ca+Mg) and Ca/Mg in the plant were closely correlated with corresponding activity ratios but independent of concentration ratios of these ions in isolated soil solution. It is postulated that uptake of cations is governed by N-metabolic processes in the plant, whereas ratios of absorbed cations are influenced by cation-activity ratios in the soil solution.  相似文献

The effects of insufficient and excessive mineral nutrition on the relative growth rate (RGR); the rate of total dark respiration (R); gross photosynthesis (Pg); and the contents of endogenous IAA, ABA, and cytokinins (CK) were studied in 20–60-day-old seedlings of plant species that differed in their responses to these factors: beet root (Amaranthus retroflexusL.), orchard-grass (Dactylis glomerataL.), and common wheat (Triticum aestivumL.). The changes in the level of mineral nutrition lowered the RGR and Pgvalues and the IAA/ABA and CK/ABA ratios and increased the Rand R/Pgvalues and ABA content, especially in A. retroflexusand T. aestivum. The authors propose a new way to assess the respiratory cost of adaptation to stress based on the relation between the RGR and the R/Pgvalues. Rectal (Tre), mean skin temperature ( sk) and sweating rate ( ) were measured in 4 residents of temperate climate under acute moderate heat exposure (designated EE in such an experimental situation), after 3 weeks in India (designated as EI) and in 8 Indian residents (designated as II) both at rest and during submaximal exercises at 2 different intensities. At rest, Tre is higher in EI (37.6°C) than in EE (36.8°C, P<0.01) and reaches 37.8°C in II. At the end of exercise, the increment in Tre seems to depend on work load only and to be independent of thermal environment; S follows a similar pattern in the 3 groups of subjects: sk is altered neither by exercise nor acclimatization. Under chronic heat exposure compared to acute conditions: (1) identical is achieved with higher Tre and similar sk so that the linear relationships vs Tre is shifted to the right. (2) the Tresk difference is greater at rest and during exercise: hence, skin blood flow, calculated from heat balance equation diminishes. In hot climate, a rise in Tre seems to be an adaptive response which allows the body to reduce skin blood flow.  相似文献

The degree to which the y-intercept (Y-int) of the linear regression of maximal work output on exercise duration represented anaerobic capacity was determined in ten well-trained male cyclists [peak oxygen uptake ( = 69.8 (SD 4.2) ml · kg –1 · min –1). Each cyclist performed three exhausting cycle sessions on separate occasions; the mean exercise durations were 312, 243 and 141 s for the low (approximately 104% , medium (approximately 108% and high (approximately 113% intensities respectively, and Y-int (kilojoules; joules per kilogram was derived from the regression of work output on exercise duration. The muscle anaerobic adenosine 5-triphosphate (ATP) yield (ATP) and anaerobic capacity (AC) were estimated from changes in metabolites in the vastus lateralis muscle and blood lactate concentration during the high intensity cycling session. The activities of glycogen phosphorylase, phosphofructokinase and citrate synthase, as well as muscle buffer value (in vitro ) were also determined. The Y-int (kilojoules) was positively correlated (P0.05) with AC (r=0.73), ATP (r=0.70) and in vitro (r=0.71); similar correlations (P0.05) were observed for Y-int (joules per kilogram). The Y-int was not correlated (P>0.05) with any enzyme activity. When the Y-int was transformed into oxygen equivalents [litres of oxygen equivalent (1 O2 Eq)] it was, on average, 0.92 1 O2 Eq lower than AC (P0.05); however, an alternative method of establishing the work-duration regression yielded a mean Y-int which was only 0.19 1 O2 Eq less than AC (P0.05). These findings support the validity of Y-int as a work estimate of anaerobic capacity in well-trained cyclists.  相似文献

 This study evaluates the effect of different levels of insulation on esophageal (T es) and rectal (T re) temperature responses during and following moderate exercise. Seven subjects completed three 18-min bouts of treadmill exercise (75% VO2max, 22°C ambient temperature) followed by 30 min of recovery wearing either: (1) jogging shoes, T-shirt and shorts (athletic clothing); (2) single-knit commercial coveralls worn over the athletic clothing (coveralls); or (3) a Canadian Armed Forces nuclear, bacteriological and chemical warfare protective overgarment with hood, worn over the athletic clothing (NBCW overgarment). T es was similar at the start of exercise for each condition and baseline T re was ∼0.4°C higher than T es. The hourly equivalent rate of increase in T es during the final 5 min of exercise was 1.8°C, 3.0°C and 4.2°C for athletic clothing, coveralls and NBCW overgarment respectively (P<0.05). End-exercise T es was significantly different between conditions [37.7°C (SEM 0.1°C), 38.2°C (SEM 0.2°C and 38.5°C (SEM 0.2°C) for athletic clothing, coveralls and NBCW overgarment respectively)] (P<0.05). No comparable difference in the rate of temperature increase for T re was demonstrated, except that end-exercise T re for the NBCW overgarment condition was significantly greater (0.5°C) than that for the athletic clothing condition. There was a drop in T es during the initial minutes of recovery to sustained plateaus which were significantly (P<0.05) elevated above pre-exercise resting values by 0.6°C, 0.8°C and 1.0°C, for athletic clothing, coveralls, and NBCW overgarment, respectively. Post-exercise T re decreased very gradually from end-exercise values during the 30-min recovery. Only the NBCW overgarment condition T re was significantly elevated (0.3°C) above the athletic clothing condition (P<0.05). In conclusion, T es is far more sensitive in reflecting the heat stress of different levels of insulation during exercise and post-exercise than T re. Zusammenfassung 45 Eier und 8 Kükenlebern des Kiebitzes aus den Jahren 1984 und 1986 wurden auf -, -, -HCH, HCB, DDT, Dieldrin, Endrin und PCB untersucht. Hohe Konzentrationen an Dieldrin wurden in den Eiern gefunden, während die Lebern von Kiebitzküken geringer belastet waren. Die geringen Konzentrationen der übrigen Pestizide und die mäßige an PCB entsprachen der niedrigen Trophieebene des Kiebitzes. Die Frage, ob die Belastung mit Dieldrin einen Einfluß auf den Rückgang von Kiebitzpopulationen in einigen Gebieten haben könnte, wird kurz diskutiert.
The burden of Dieldrin and other chlorinated hydrocarbons on the Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)
Summary -, -, -HCH, HCB DDT, Dieldrin, Endrin, and PCB were determined in 45 eggs and 8 livers of young Lapwings in 1984 and 1986. High concentrations of Dieldrin were found in eggs while those in livers of young Lapwings were lower. The low residues of the other pesticides and the moderate ones of PCB are in accordance with the low trophic level of the Lapwing. The probable influence of the Dieldrin burden on the decline of Lapwing populations in several regions is discussed briefly.

Rectal and vaginal temperature responses of the Savanna Brown goat indigenous to the Nigerian guinea savanna were determined during the harmattan and the hot-dry season. Measurements were made at 06:00h and at 14:00h after 8h exposure to field conditions. At the 06:00h measurements during the harmattan, all animals were observed to shiver. A significant (P<0.01) positive correlation was found between rectal (Tre) and vaginal temperatures. During the harmattan, mean Tre was 38.2C at 06:00h and 39.7C at 14:00h; the mean difference, Tre was 1.5C. During the hot-dry season, Tre at 06:00h was 38.1C, and at 14:00h, 38.7; Tre was 0.6C. It is concluded that the harmattan is thermally more stressful than the hot-dry season and that passive thermolability may not be an important mechanism in the Savanna Brown goat in adaptation to thermal stress.  相似文献

Seven subjects pedalled on a Monark cycle ergometer as fast as possible for approximately 7 s against four different resistances which corresponded to braking torques (T B) equal to 19, 38, 57 and 76 N · m at the crank level. Exercise periods were separated by 5-min recovery periods. Pedal velocity was recorded every 50 ms by means of a disc with 360 slots fixed on the flywheel, passing in front of a photo-electric cell linked to a microcomputer which processed the data. Every 50 ms, the time necessary to perform half a pedal revolution (t 1/2) was computed by adding the 50-ms periods necessary to reach 669 slots (the number of slots corresponding to half a pedal revolution). To measuret 1/2 to an accuracy better than 50 ms, this time was computed by a linear interpolation of the time-slot number relationship. Power (P) was averaged duringt 12 by adding the power dissipated against braking torque and the power necessary to accelerate the flywheel. The torque-velocity (T-) relationship was studied during the acceleration phase of a sprint against a single TB by computing every 50 ms the relationship between and T (N · m), equal to the sum ofT B and the torque necessary to accelerate the flywheel at the same time. The T- relationships calculated from the acceleration phase of a single all-out exercise were linear and similar to the previously described relationships between peak velocity and braking force. These relationships can be expressed as follows: = 0,acc (1 –T/T 0,acc) where is pedal velocity,T the torque exerted on the crank andT 0,acc and 0,acc have the dimensions of maximal torque and maximal velocity respectively. Based on this model, maximal power (P max,acc) is calculated as 0.2570, acc T 0, acc. Maximal powerP max,acc measured with the acceleration method was independent of braking torqueT B and slightly higher thanP max calculated from the relationship between peak velocity andT B.  相似文献

This study investigated the physiological function of suppressed melatonin through thermoregulation in a cold environment. Interactions between thermoregulation directly affected by exposure to a cold environment and indirectly affected by endogenous melatonin suppression by bright-light exposure were examined. Ten male subjects were exposed to two different illumination intensities (30 and 5000 lux) for 4.5?h, and two different ambient temperatures (15 and 27°C) for 2?h before sleep under dark and thermoneutral conditions. Salivary melatonin level was suppressed by bright light (p?<?0.001), although the ambient temperature condition had no significant effect on melatonin. During sleep, significant effects of pre-sleep exposure to a cold ambient temperature (p?<?0.001) and bright light (p?<?0.01) on rectal temperature (Tre) were observed. Pre-sleep, bright-light exposure led to an attenuated fall in Tre during sleep. Moreover, Tre dropped more precipitously after cold exposure than thermoneutral conditions (cold: ?0.54?±?0.07°C/h; thermoneutral: ?0.16?±?0.03°C/h; p?<?0.001). Pre-sleep, bright-light exposure delayed the nadir time of Tre under thermoneutral conditions (p?<?0.05), while cold exposure masked the circadian rhythm with a precipitous decrease in Tre. A significant correlation between the Tre nadir and melatonin level (r?=??0.774, p?<?0.05) indicated that inter-individual differences with higher melatonin levels lead to a reduction in Tre after cold exposure. L. Naranbagh (alt. 1587 m) is a polymictic, shallow marl lake in the flood-plain valley of Kashmir, India. Macrofloral affinities resemble Potamogeton Type of Forsberg (1965) with alkaline waters, not rich in phosphorus. CaCO3 precipitation coupled with decline in Ca2+ and alkalinity values are characteristic of the lake. Fluctuations in Mg2+, Na+, K+, and Cl were relatively conservative. The levels of PO inf4 sup3– -P and NO inf3 sup– -N indicate moderate fertility of the lake water.Persistence of a summer-autumn planktonic algal pulse is related to favourable irradiance, high water temperatures, and increased photosynthetic efficiency values. The most striking seasonality in photosynthetic rates (m–2 h–1) between winter minimum (3 mg Cassim) and summer maximum (75.4 mg Cassim) is determined by mainly climatic changes. Energy flow gave annual phytoplankton production of 51.95 × 102 KJ m–2 for the ecosystem.The nutrient levels and productivity rates suggest mesotrophic status of L. Naranbagh in classic oligoeutrophic classification of lake types.  相似文献
