Satisfactory conception rates of deep frozen boar spermatozoa were obtained, with insemination by way of the cervix, after thawing the deep frozen spermatozoa in boar seminal plasma, both in preliminary trials (Crabo & Einarsson 1971, Crabo et al. 1972 b) and in a large field trial (Einarsson et al. 1972). Fertility with pellet frozen boar spermatozoa, thawed without dilution, was reported by Graham et al. (1971 a, b) and Pursel & Johnson (1971).  相似文献

Trials were carried out with benomyl and dodemorph in 1970, 1971 and 1972, with triarimol in 1971 and with MBC in 1972. In 1970 and 1971 there were some indications that dodemorph was a more effective eradicant but the differences between materials generally appeared less important than the timing of the spray application. An attempt in 1972 to obtain better control by applying sprays in relation to predictions of mildew growth, based on temperature and humidity, was only partially successful. No significant effects of mildew on leaf area or number of flowers could be demonstrated. High levels (25 and 50%) of mildew were associated with small leaves but this may reflect only the abundance of such leaves at periods generally favourable for mildew. The rate of increase of mildew appeared to be directly related to rate of host growth. The significance of this is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The life cycle of the mayfly, Ephemera danica , was studied on two contrasted sites on the River Lambourn between 1971 and 1979.
2. Quantitative samples of nymphs were taken on the five major biotopes of the river bed, gravel, silt, Ranunculus, Berula and Callitriche . Exposed areas of gravel and silt held significantly lower densities of nymphs than the three macro-phytes with their underlying substrata. The sandy substratum underlying beds of Berula frequently held significantly higher densities than the other macrophytes.
3. Monthly samples from March 1971 to April 1972 followed by samples in June and December from 1972 to 1979 indicated that the nymphal phase normally took 2 years in the River Lambourn.
4. All odd-numbered years from 1971 to 1979 produced weak year-classes. In contrast, all even-numbered years between 1970 and 1978, with the exception of 1972, produced relatively strong year-classes.
5. Meteorological data for the period of flight activity in E.danica indicated that conditions were colder and damper in 1972 than in the other even-numbered years of the study, when recruitment was more successful.  相似文献

Macrobenthos and physicochemical conditions in the lower 39 km of the Neches River estuary were studied from August, 1984 to May, 1985. The results were compared with data collected in 1971–1972. Between 1972 and 1984 the permitted BOD waste load in the tidal Neches River was reduced from 123 125 kg d to 8717 kg d. River discharge and dissolved oxygen concentrations were consistently higher and salinity was lower, during the same seasons, during the 1984–1985 study. A total of 50 taxa of macrobenthos were collected in 1971–1972 and 104 taxa were collected in 1984–1985. The numbers of taxa per collection at each station in 1984–1985 were at least twice those found in 1971–1972. Minimum densities in 1984–1985 were much higher than the maximum densities in 1971–1972 at all stations. Patterns of dominance, Sorenson's similarity index, and diversity ( ) values indicated improved water quality in 1984–1985. Statistical analysis of macrobenthic diversity indicated significant differences between upper estuary and lower estuary stations in 1971–1972. No significant differences were found in 1984–1985. Significant differences in numbers of taxa, macrobenthos densities, and values between the two studies were found. Reductions of waste loads, increased river discharge, and deepening of the navigation channel were among the factors that probably contributed most to the changes in community structure of the macrobenthos observed.  相似文献

Limulus amoebocyte lysate was prepared from a total of 180 crabs during 1971 and 1972 by using a slightly modified lysate preparation procedure. Marked variability of lysate potency was noted both years. In addition, lysate quality appeared diminished in 1972 as compared with 1971. Different lysate batches were evaluated for potency by using a variety of endotoxin preparations. Variations in batch potencies were observed, but little variation in reactivity among different endotoxin preparations was noted. Use of potent lysate batches allowed detection of endotoxin concentrations as low as 100 pg/ml. No endotoxinlike activity was observed from 11 different strains of yeast by use of the Limulus assay.  相似文献

The antigenic characteristics of enterovirus type 70 (EV 70) were investigated by means of cross and kinetic neutralization tests (NT). Twelve strains of EV 70 isolated in a period from 1971 to 1976 were analyzed using seven rabbit and one monkey hyper-immune sera. All the strains investigated were found to possess a common and prime variant antigens in varying proportions. Accordingly, EV 70 isolates were devided intratypically into three antigenic sub groups; (1) prototype-like (four strain from 1971 to 1972), (2) intermediate, G-10/72-like (two strains from 1972 to 1973), and (3) prime variant, G-2/74-like (six strains from 1974 to 1976) groups. Thus it was considered that EV 70 might represent a virus type with antigenic heterogeneity, and that antigenic drift from the prototype to the prime type may have occurred successively after 1971.  相似文献

Bacteriological Assessment of Spoon River Water Quality   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Data from a study of five stations on the Spoon River, Ill., during June 1971 through May 1973 were analyzed for compliance with Illinois Pollution Control Board's water quality standards of a geometric mean limitation of 200 fecal coliforms per 100 ml. This bacterial limit was achieved about 20% of the time during June 1971 through May 1972, and was never achieved during June 1972 through May 1973. Ratios of fecal coliform to total coliform are presented. By using fecal coliform-to-fecal streptococcus ratios to sort out fecal pollution origins, it was evident that a concern must be expressed not only for municipal wastewater effluents to the receiving stream, but also for nonpoint sources of pollution in assessing the bacterial quality of a stream.  相似文献

Feeding and drinking habits of the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis L.) population in Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya, were studied from May 1971 to August 1972. A total of 108 rhinoceros were recorded in the study area. Feeding rhinoceros were followed behind their feeding tracks until they stopped feeding (or changed to another activity) and the plants which they selected were identified. A technique was used which provided an indication of the relative importance of certain plants in the diet during May to September 1971 (wet-semi-dry), October 1971 to February 1972 (dry) and February to May 1972 (wet-semi-dry). A total of 240 h were spent actually watching feeding rhinoceros in thirteen distribution areas. During this period rhinoceros were observed eating seventy plant species from thirty botanical families. In all distribution areas rhinoceros were very selective for herbs and shrubs, and showed a marked preference for Solanum incanum, Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia species. Rhinoceros were also observed to visit salt licks which contained sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium. Two feeding peaks, one in morning and the other in the afternoon were recorded. Black rhinoceros drink water mainly at night. They spend most of the night time near the watering places for they were mostly located in the mornings walking to the feeding grounds.  相似文献

Aflatoxin accumulation in Deltapine 16 cottonseed, grown in Yuma, Ariz., in a 3-year study, was significantly influenced by the timing of irrigation terminations and by level of pink bollworm infestations. In 1971 and 1972, termination of irrigations by early August resulted in significantly less aflatoxin than in plots where two additional irrigations were applied. Significantly less aflatoxin also was found in the 1971 and 1973 plots where low levels of pink bollworm infestations were maintained.  相似文献

The parasite faunas of juvenile English sole (Parophrys vetulus) in 1971-1972 and staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus) in 1971 from Yaquina Bay, Oregon, were compared with faunas found in the same estuary in 1997-2000 (English sole) and 1999-2000 (staghorn sculpin). The 7 most commonly occurring parasites in 1971 were compared with the same species observed during the same month and sampling sites in 1997-2000. Multivariate community analysis of juvenile English sole parasites supported the suggestion that the 1971 parasite data were representative of the early-1970s time period. Four of the parasite species infecting English sole and 6 of those infecting staghorn sculpins had significantly lower prevalences in 1997-2000. Parasite species with significantly lower prevalences also had reduced intensity levels. One parasite (Glugea stephani) of English sole increased in prevalence in the 1997-2000 samples in association with the warm estuarine temperatures during the 1997 El Ni?o year. Although the causes for the changes in occurrence of other parasites were not determined, ecological changes in Yaquina Bay that may have influenced parasite ecology include apparent changes in the estuary ichthyofauna that occurred between the sampling periods. Such changes could be associated with increases in the number of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) subsequent to establishment of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972.  相似文献

T he N ormal biochemical maturation of postsynaptic adrenergic neurons in mouse and rat superior cervical ganglion depends upon an intact preganglionic innervation (B lack , H endry and I versen , 1971a, 1972; T hoenen , S aner and K eitler , 1972). In recent studies tyrosine hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzyme in norepinephrine biosynthesis (L evitt , S pector , S joerdsma and U denfriend , 1965), with localization to adrenergic neurons in the ganglion (B lack , H endry and I versen , 1971b), was used to monitor maturation of these cells. The developmental increase in tyrosine hydroxylase activity occurred simultaneously with the appearance of ganglionic synapses and was prevented by transection of the preganglionic nerve trunk (B lack , H endry and I versen , 1971a). These observations suggest that presynaptic cholinergic nerve terminals regulate the biochemical development of postsynaptic neurons in the superior cervical ganglion. The mechanism(s) by which presynaptic cholinergic terminals regulate postsynaptic development has not been elucidated. Such trans-synaptic regulation may be dependent on normal impulse transmission and/or may involve other unidentified, trophic factors. The results presented in the present communication suggest that normal development of ganglionic tyrosine hydroxylase activity is dependent on depolarization of postsynaptic adrenergic neurons.  相似文献
