How to build and install your own CaptuRING

CaptuRING is a reliable and affordable tool to transform tree-ring samples into digital images combining open source software and do-it-yourself philosophies. A Raspberry Pi runs the system through an Arduino board that controls the wood sample movement across a linear screw at the time that a digital camera takes sequential high resolution (>4500 dpi) images from a wood sample. Here, we present three video tutorials, with English and Spanish subtitles, to construct and install CaptuRING (github.com/CambiumRG/CaptuRING) from scratch. First video tutorial explains the necessary components and how to assemble them to construct the CaptuRING platform, second tutorial covers Arduino board and Raspberry Pi connections, and the third tutorial is devoted to hardware configuration, software installation and CaptuRING use.     

It's a knockout!

'It's a Knockout!' provides an update of some of the latest mouse knockouts in TBASE (http://www.jax.org/tbase/ and Ref. 1). The column provides a concise phenotypic profile of novel mutants and renders their complete characterization directly accessible to Web users, via unique and unchanging accession numbers (TBASE identities). Where possible, interesting knockouts will be grouped according to gene families, application or phenotypic similarities.     

It's cold,mom! It's cyclic GMP

Cyclic GMP is the signal transducer of a family of transmembrane, particulate guanylyl cyclase (GC) receptors with key roles in physiology and disease. GC‐G, the last member of the membrane GCs identified in mammals, is an orphan receptor and its regulation and function have remained largely unknown. In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Chao et al ( 2015 ) show that the GC‐G/cGMP pathway, which is expressed in a specific cluster of olfactory neurons of neonatal mice, functions as a cold‐induced thermosensor, which triggers protective maternal care.
