We compared the photosynthetic traits in response to soil water availability in an endangered plant species Mosla hangchowensis Matsuda and in a weed Mosla dianthera (Buch.-Ham.) Maxim. The highest diurnal mean net photosynthetic rate (P Nmean), stomatal conductance (g s), and water use efficiency (WUE) of both species occurred at 60 % soil water holding capacity (WHC), while the lowest values occurred at 20 % WHC. The P Nmean, g s, and chlorophyll (Chl) a and b contents of M. hangchowensis were lower than those of M. dianthera, while the physiological plasticity indices were higher than those of M. dianthera. M. hangchowensis had strong adaptability to the changing soil water status but weak extending population ability in its habitats because of the low P Nmean, which may be one of the causes of its endangerment.  相似文献

Photosynthetic and growth characteristics of Mosla chinensis and M. scabra were compared at three irradiances similar to shaded forest understory, forest edge, and open land. At 25 % full ambient irradiance, M. chinensis and M. scabra had similar photosynthetic characteristics, but saturation irradiance, compensation irradiance, and apparent quantum yield of M. chinensis were higher than those of M. scabra at full ambient irradiance and 70 % full ambient irradiance. At the same irradiance treatment, specific leaf area and leaf area ratio of M. chinensis were lower than those of M. scabra. Photon-saturated photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of M. chinensis, however, were not significantly higher than those of M. scabra, and the leaf area and total biomass were lower than those of M. scabra. As a sun-acclimated plant, the not enough high photosynthetic capacity and lower biomass accumulation may cause that M. chinensis has weak capability to extend its population and hence be concomitant in the community.  相似文献

To introduce endangered plants to urban green space for ex situ conservation successfully, it is important to better understand the optimal NO3 ?/NH4 + ratios for profitable plant. Increasing nitrogen deposition altered the nitrate to ammonium ratio (NO3 ?/NH4 +) in soil. This change may strongly affect the fate of endangered plants, which often have little ability to adapt to environmental changes. In this study, we carried out a microcosm hydroponic experiment by growing Mosla hangchowensis (an endangered species) to test its preference to NO3 ?/NH4 + ratios and used congeneric M. dianthera (a widespread species) for comparison. Results showed that M. hangchowensis preferred an equal NO3 ?/NH4 + ratio to NO3 ? as an N source, with a higher biomass observed under NO3 ?/NH4 + ratios of 50/50 and 75/25 than other treatments. However, M. dianthera preferred NO3 ? as N source, with a higher biomass under NO3 ?/NH4 + ratios of 100/0 and 75/25 than other treatments. NH4 + is the dominant form of N in atmospheric deposition in China and continued increasing in nitrogen deposition may be detrimental to M. hangchowensis, while only have minimal effects on M. dianthera. Urban regions are expanding, and the high environmental heterogeneity in urban areas can provide potential habitats for M. hangchowensis. Based on this study, we advise that the ex suit conservation of M. hangchowensis in urban green spaces needs to adjust the fertilization strategy according to the situation of nitrogen deposition to achieve the optimal NO3 ?/NH4 + ratio.  相似文献

In a temperate climate, evergreen species in the understory are exposed to large changes in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and temperature over the year. We determined the photosynthetic traits of leaves of an evergreen understory shrub Aucuba japonica at three sites at monthly intervals: understorys of a deciduous forest; an evergreen forest; and a gap in a mixed forest. This set up enabled us to separate the effects of seasonal change in PPFD and temperature on photosynthetic acclimation under natural conditions. The effects of PPFD and temperature were analysed by simple and multiple regression analyses. The amounts of light utilisation components (LU), represented by nitrogen and rubisco contents per area, were higher in winter, when temperature was low and PPFD was high. The LU relative to the amount of light harvesting components (LH), represented by chlorophyll a/b and rubisco/chlorophyll ratios, and the inverse of chlorophyll/nitrogen ratio were also higher in winter. We quantified the effects of PPFD and temperature on the LU and LH components. Across sites PPFD had stronger effects than air temperature, while within a site temperature had stronger effects on photosynthetic acclimation. We concluded that the photosynthetic apparatus is strongly affected by the prevailing PPFD at the time of leaf development. Within a given light regime, however, plants acclimated by increasing LU relative to LH primarily in response to temperature and to a lesser extent to PPFD.  相似文献

Increasing photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) received during development from 5.5 to 31.2 mol m-2 d-1 resulted in greater leaf and mesophyll cell surface areas in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The relationships between the amounts of these surface areas and potential CO2 assimilation by these leaves were evaluated. Leaf area (epidermal surface area of one side of a leaf), mesophyll cell surface area, and net rate of CO2 uptake (Pn) were measured from the time leaves first unfolded until P., was substantially reduced. At the higher PPFD, leaf and mesophyll surface areas increased more rapidly during expansion, and Pn per unit leaf area was greater than at the lower PPFD. Although leaves at the higher PPFD reached the maximum P., per unit mesophyll cell surface area 4 to 5 days earlier than leaves at the lower PPFD, the maxima for these P., were similar. Leaves grown at the higher PPFD had the potential to assimilate 2.2, 3.5, or 5.8 times the amount of CO2 as leaves from the lower PPFD when P., was expressed per unit mesophyll surface, per unit leaf surface, or per whole leaf, respectively. Greater and earlier development of both P., and mesophyll cell surface area at higher PPFD apparently had a compounding effect on the potential for carbon assimilation by a leaf.  相似文献

We compared variation in sun-canopy leaf anatomy, morphology and photosynthetic rates of coexisting woody species (trees and lianas) in an 8-year-old secondary forest (SF) and mature forest (MF) in the wet season in Xishuangbanna, SW China. Variability of leaf traits of 66 species within growth-form groups in each forest was quantified using coefficients of variation (CV). For the mean values, the woody species in the SF had significantly higher leaf thickness and stomatal density, but lower nonmesophyll/mesophyll ratios than those in the MF. The average leaf area and leaf mass area (LMA) in the studied woody species did not change greatly during the successional process, but differed significantly between the growth forms, with trees having higher values than lianas. The light-saturated photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (A a) of the woody species in the SF ranged from 11.2 to 34.5 μmol m−2 s−1, similarly to pioneer tree species from literature data in southeast Asia. The A a and photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (PNUE) were significantly higher than those in the MF; whereas A a in the MF ranged between 9 to 21 μmol m−2 s−1, with similar values between lianas and trees. For all woody species in both SF and MF, there were no significant differences in the average values of the CV of all measured variables for both lianas and trees. However, considerable variation in leaf anatomy, morphology, and photosynthetic rates within both growth forms and forests existed, as well as substantial variation in leaf size and stomatal density. We concluded that the tropical woody species formed a heterogeneous functional group in terms of leaf morphology and physiology in both secondary and mature forests.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (g s), leaf water potential (ψleaf), leaf nitrogen content, and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) were compared between a typical C4 plant, Agriophyllum squarrosum and a C3 plant, Leymus chinensis, in Hunshandak Sandland, China. The plant species showed different diurnal gas exchange patterns on June 12–14 when photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), air temperature (T air), and water potential were moderate. P N, E, and g s of A. squarrosum showed distinct single peak while those of L. chinensis were depressed at noon and had two peaks in their diurnal courses. Gas exchange traits of both species showed midday depression under higher photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and T air when Ψleaf was significantly low down on August 6–8. However, those of A. squarrosum were depressed less seriously. Moreover, A. squarrosum had higher P N, Ψleaf, water use efficiency (WUE), and PNUE than L. chinensis. Thus A. squarrosum was much more tolerant to heat and high irradiance and could utilise the resources on sand area more efficiently than L. chinensis. Hence species like A. squarrosum may be introduced and protected to reconstruct the degraded sand dunes because of their higher tolerance to stress and higher resource use efficiency. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Mora excelsa and M. gonggrijpii are well segregated along a soil hydrological gradient. M. excelsa is positively associated with soil hydromorphic characteristics such as gley, mottling and groundwater within 1.20 m, whereas M. gonggrijpii is negatively associated with these characteristics. Growth and mortality of artificially installed seedlings were studied in both species in occasionally flooded forest and dryer uphill forest. In a moderate year (1992, no pronounced flooding, no drought), there was no difference between the two species in growth or mortality in the two forest types. M. gonggrijpii was larger in both forest types. Flooding tolerance of seeds and seedlings were studied under controlled water regimes. Seeds of M. gonggrijpii appeared to be very intolerant to flooding, since germination in this species dropped to 50% after only 11 days of flooding. Seeds of M. excelsa floated and 80% of the seeds were viable after as much as 50 days of flooding. Artificially submerged seeds of the latter species had an intermediate survival response. Flooding in seedlings resulted in cessation of growth in both species. Mortality was nil in most treatments, but all M. gonggrijpii individuals died after a treatment of 8 weeks of continuous flooding. Drought tolerance of seedlings of M. excelsa and M. gonggrijpii was studied in a drying-out experiment. Seedlings of both species of approximately equal size differed widely in a number of characteristics: total leaf area, leaf dry weight, leaf thickness, leaf size and leaf area ratio (LAR) were all larger in M. gonggrijpii, while stomatal density and specific leaf area (SLA) were smaller in this species. Seedlings did not differ in stem hydraulic conductivity. M. excelsa showed lower osmotic potential at full hydration. Turgor potential loss points were not nearly approached in the forest during the middle of the dry season in either species. M. gonggrijpii had much lower stomatal conductance than M. excelsa, due to lower stomatal density. Boundary layer conductance was of the same magnitude as stomatal conductance, especially in the morning. In a drying-out experiment, total plant transpiration was higher in M. gonggrijpii, as the lower conductance observed in this species was compensated for by its larger leaf area. M. gonggrijpii was able to extract water from dryer soils than M. excelsa and may be able to utilize its higher leaf water content under moderate drought in the forest understorey.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of Valeriana jatamansi plants, grown under nylon net shade or under different tree canopies, was saturated with photons at 1 000 mol m–2 s–1 photosynthetic photon-flux-density (PPFD), whereas open-grown plants were able to photosynthesise even at higher PPFD, e.g. of 2 000 mol m–2 s–1. Plants grown under net shade had higher total chlorophyll (Chl) content per unit area of leaf surface. However, Chl a/b ratio was maximal in open-grown plants, but remained unchanged in plants grown in nylon net shade and under different tree canopies. Sun-grown plants had thicker leaves (higher leaf mass per leaf area unit), higher wax content, and higher P N than shade grown plants. Thus V. jatamansi is able to acclimate to high PPFD and therefore this Himalayan species may be cultivated in open habitat to meet the ever-increasing industrial demand.  相似文献

The effect of soil moisture on gas exchange and growth of an endangered species, Changium smyrnioides, was compared with a non-endangered species, Anthriscus sylvestris. The two species belong to the same family Umbellaceae. With the decrease of soil moisture, the net photosynthetic rate (PN) and transpiration rate (E) decreased, while water use efficiency (WUE) increased, PN and WUE of C. smyrnioides were lower than those of A. sylvestris, whereas E was higher than that of A. sylvestris. The biomass, leaf mass ratio (LMR) and leaf area ratio (LAR) of C. smyrnioides were lower than those of A. sylvestris. Under drought, biomass. LMR and LAR of C. smyrnioides decreased more steeply than those of A. sylvestris, whereas specific root length (SRL) of C. smyrnioides was higher, compared to that of A. sylvestris. The present study indicated that C. smyrnioides accumulated less biomass, and directed more biomass to roots than A. sylvestris.  相似文献

Branch architecture, leaf photosynthetic traits, and leaf demography were investigated in saplings of two woody species, Homolanthus caloneurus and Macaranga rostulata, co-occurring in the understory of a tropical mountain forest. M. rostulata saplings have cylindrical crowns, whereas H. caloneurus saplings have flat crowns. Saplings of the two species were found not to differ in area-based photosynthetic traits and in average light conditions in the understory of the studied site, but they do differ in internode length, leaf emergence rate, leaf lifespan, and total leaf area. Displayed leaf area of H. caloneurus saplings, which have the more rapid leaf emergence, was smaller than that of M. rostulata saplings, which have a longer leaf lifespan and larger total leaf area, although M. rostulata saplings showed a higher degree of leaf overlap. Short leaf lifespan and consequent small total leaf area would be linked to leaf overlap avoidance in the densely packed flat H. caloneurus crown. In contrast, M. rostulata saplings maintained a large total leaf area by producing leaves with a long leaf lifespan. In these understory saplings with a different crown architecture, we observed two contrasting adaptation strategies to shade which are achieved by adjusting a suite of morphological and leaf demographic characters. Each understory species has a suite of morphological traits and leaf demography specific to its architecture, thus attaining leaf overlap avoidance or large total leaf area.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Theory for optimal allocation of foliar nitrogen (ONA) predicts that both nitrogen concentration and photosynthetic capacity will scale linearly with gradients of insolation within plant canopies. ONA is expected to allow plants to efficiently use both light and nitrogen. However, empirical data generally do not exhibit perfect ONA, and light-use optimization per se is little explored. The aim was to examine to what degree partitioning of nitrogen or light is optimized in the crowns of three tropical canopy tree species.

Methods

Instantaneous photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) incident on the adaxial surface of individual leaves was measured along vertical PPFD gradients in tree canopies at a frequency of 0·5 Hz over 9–17 d, and summed to obtain the average daily integral of PPFD for each leaf to characterize its insolation regime. Also measured were leaf N per area (Narea), leaf mass per area (LMA), the cosine of leaf inclination and the parameters of the photosynthetic light response curve [photosynthetic capacity (Amax), dark respiration (Rd), apparent quantum yield (ϕ) and curvature (θ)]. The instantaneous PPFD measurements and light response curves were used to estimate leaf daily photosynthesis (Adaily) for each leaf.

Key Results

Leaf Narea and Amax changed as a hyperbolic asymptotic function of the PPFD regime, not the linear relationship predicted by ONA. Despite this suboptimal nitrogen partitioning among leaves, Adaily did increase linearly with PPFD regime through co-ordinated adjustments in both leaf angle and physiology along canopy gradients in insolation, exhibiting a strong convergence among the three species.

Conclusions

The results suggest that canopy tree leaves in this tropical forest optimize photosynthetic use of PPFD rather than N per se. Tropical tree canopies then can be considered simple ‘big-leaves’ in which all constituent ‘small leaves’ use PPFD with the same photosynthetic efficiency.Key words: Optimal resource allocation, nitrogen, photosynthetic capacity, leaf mass per area, tropical trees, radiation use efficiency, scaling, leaf angle, canopy architecture, big leaf model  相似文献

Premise of the Study

The pygmy forest, a plant community of severely stunted conifers and ericaceous angiosperms, occurs on patches of highly acidic, nutrient‐poor soils along the coast of Northern California, USA. This system is an excellent opportunity to study the effect of severe nutrient deficiency on leaf physiology in a naturally‐occurring ecosystem. In this study, we seek to understand the physiological mechanisms stunting the plants' growth and their implications for whole plant function.

Methods

We measured 14 traits pertaining to leaf photosynthetic function or physical structure on seven species. Samples were taken from the pygmy forest community and from conspecifics growing on higher‐nutrient soils, where trees may grow over 30 m tall.

Key Results

Pygmy plants of most species maintained similar area‐based photosynthetic and stomatal conductance rates to conspecific controls, but had lower specific leaf area (leaf area divided by dry weight), lower percent nitrogen, and less leaf area relative to xylem growth. Sequoia sempervirens, a species rare in the pygmy forest, had a categorically different response from the more common plants and had remarkably low photosynthetic rates.

Conclusions

Pygmy plants were not stunted by low photosynthetic rates on a leaf‐area basis; instead, several species had restricted whole‐plant photosynthesis due to low leaf area production. Pygmy plants of all species showed signs of greater carbon investment in their leaves and higher production of nonphotosynthetic leaf tissue, further contributing to slow growth rates.  相似文献

The effects of shade on the growth, leaf photosynthetic characteristics, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters of Lycoris radiata var. radiata were determined under differing irradiances (15, 65, and 100% of full irradiance) within pots. The HI plants exhibited a typical decline in net photosynthetic rate (P N) during midday, which was not observed in MI- and LI plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in HI plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) value was higher and the minimal fluorescence (F0) was lower in the, and LI plants. Diurnal patterns of stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) were remarkably similar to those of P N at each shade treatments, and the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) had the opposite change trend. Under both shading conditions, the light saturation point, light compensation point and photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max) became lower than those under full sunlight, and it was the opposite for the apparent quantum yield (AQY). The higher the level of shade, the lower the integrated daytime carbon gain, stomatal and epidermis cell densities, specific leaf mass (SLM), bulb mass ratio (BMR), leaf thickness, and Chl a/b ratio. In contrast, contents of Chls per dry mass (DM), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), leaf length, leaf area and total leaf area per plant increased under the same shade levels to promote photon absorption and to compensate for the lower radiant energy. Therefore, when the integrated daytime carbon gain, leaf area and total leaf area per plant, which are the main factors determining the productivity of L. radiata var. radiata plant, were taken into account together, this species may be cultivated at about 60∼70% of ambient irradiance to promote its growth.  相似文献

Factors that contribute to interspecific variation in photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (PNUE, the ratio of CO2 assimilation rate to leaf organic nitrogen content) were investigated, comparing ten dicotyledonous species that differ inherently in specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area:leaf dry mass). Plants were grown hydroponically in controlled environment cabinets at two irradiances (200 and 1000 μmol m–2 s–1). CO2 and irradiance response curves of photosynthesis were measured followed by analysis of the chlorophyll, Rubisco, nitrate and total nitrogen contents of the leaves. At both irradiances, SLA ranged more than twofold across species. High-SLA species had higher in situ rates of photosynthesis per unit leaf mass, but similar rates on an area basis. The organic N content per unit leaf area was lower for the high-SLA species and consequently PNUE at ambient light conditions (PNUEamb) was higher in those plants. Differences were somewhat smaller, but still present, when PNUE was determined at saturating irradiances (PNUEmax). An assessment was made of the relative importance of the various factors that underlay interspecific variation in PNUE. For plants grown under low irradiance, PNUEamb of high-SLA species was higher primarily due to their lower N content per unit leaf area. Low-SLA species clearly had an overinvestment in photosynthetic N under these conditions. In addition, high SLA-species allocated a larger fraction of organic nitrogen to thylakoids and Rubisco, which further increased PNUEamb. High-SLA species grown under high irradiance showed higher PNUEamb mainly due to a higher Rubisco specific activity. Other factors that contributed were again their lower contents of Norg per unit leaf area and a higher fraction of photosynthetic N in electron transport and Rubisco. For PNUEmax, differences between species in organic leaf nitrogen content per se were no longer important and higher PNUEmax of the high SLA species was due to a higher fraction of N in␣photosynthetic compounds (for low-light plants) and a higher Rubisco specific activity (for high-light grown plants). Leaves of Alternanthera philoxeroides, alligator weed, developed at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, light energy at wavelengths of 400 to 700 nm) of 790 μmol sec−1 m−2 (High Light) had less surface area, were thicker, had a higher maximum Pn (net rate of CO2 uptake), and required a higher PPFD for saturation of Pn, than leaves developed at 160 μmol sec−1 m−2 (Low Light). Mesophyll thickness at Low Light was within 19% of maximum 2 days after emergence but at High Light, thickness increased 79% between 2 and 16 days after leaf emergence. The ratio of mesophyll surface area to leaf surface area decreased during development in both light treatments; the ratio, however, was over 70% greater in fully expanded High Light leaves than in Low Light leaves. Maximum Pn expressed on a leaf surface area basis was 158% greater in High Light leaves than in Low Light leaves, but Pn was only 58% greater when expressed on a mesophyll surface area basis. It was estimated that fully expanded High Light leaves fixed 72% more CO2 per leaf (Pn expressed per unit surface area times the total surface area per leaf) than fully expanded Low Light leaves when Pn was measured at the PPFD leaves expanded under. Both High and Low Light leaves would fix about the same amount of CO2 per leaf when Pn was measured at 160 μmol sec−1 m−2 because the larger surface area of the Low Light leaves offset small differences in Pn.  相似文献

Changium smyrnioides Wolff. and Anthriscus sylvestris (L.) Hoffm. have similar photosynthetic characters; they use radiant energy in winter and early spring effectively, but cannot take full advantage of higher irradiance after spring. The specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area ratio (LAR), and leaf mass ratio (LMR) of C. smyrnioides were lower than those of A. sylvestris. The photosynthetic period of C smyrnioides was about 160 d shorter than that of A. sylvestris, causing the total photosynthetic production of C. smyrnioides to be lower than that of A. sylvestris. Hence if C. smyrnioides is disturbed, it could not recover within a short period.  相似文献

Recent work has suggested that the photosynthetic rate of certain C4 species can be stimulated by increasing CO2 concentration, [CO2], even under optimal water and nutrients. To determine the basis for the observed photosynthetic stimulation, we tested the hypothesis that the CO2 leak rate from the bundle sheath would be directly related to any observed stimulation in single leaf photosynthesis at double the current [CO2]. Three C4 species that differed in the reported degree of bundle sheath leakiness to CO2, Flaveria trinervia, Panicum miliaceum, and Panicum maximum, were grown for 31–48 days after sowing at a [CO2] of 350 μl l?1 (ambient) or 700 μl l?1 (elevated). Assimilation as a function of increasing [CO2] at high photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, 1 600 μmol m?2 s?1) indicated that leaf photosynthesis was not saturated under current ambient [CO2] for any of the three C4 species. Assimilation as a function of increasing PPFD also indicated that the response of leaf photosynthesis to elevated [CO2] was light dependent for all three C4 species. The stimulation of leaf photosynthesis at elevated [CO2] was not associated with previously published values of CO2 leak rates from the bundle sheath, changes in the ratio of activities of PEP-carboxylase to RuBP carboxylase/oxgenase, or any improvement in daytime leaf water potential for the species tested in this experiment. In spite of the simulation of leaf photosynthesis, a significant increase in growth at elevated [CO2] was only observed for one species, F. trinervia. Results from this study indicate that leaf photosynthetic rates of certain C4 species can respond directly to increased [CO2] under optimal growth conditions, but that the stimulation of whole plant growth at elevated carbon dioxide cannot be predicted solely on the response of individual leaves.  相似文献
