The ontogenic development of neurosensory structures in larval Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.) was examined using microscopy imaging techniques and analysis. Larval samples were preserved at developmental stages of 444, 486, 528, 570, 612, and 666 degree‐days, respectively. Larvae were measured and photographed macroscopically. The fish were then embedded in paraffin for histological processing. 5 μm sequential sections of the anterior of the larvae were cut and stained using hematoxylin and eosin dyes. The resulting sections were examined using an Olympus BX60 compound microscope. The development of neurosensory structures such as neuromasts and sensory papillae were observed throughout all developmental stages of larvae and early development of the lateral line was observed at 666 degree‐days. Neuromast frequency increased as larvae matured, suggesting that larvae were approaching their first feeding event towards the end of the sampling period. Possible implications of development on larval first feeding are discussed.  相似文献

 The eyes of different larval stages of Carinaria lamarcki were examined ultrastructurally. In all larval stages the eyes consist of a cornea, a lens and an everse retina. The photoreceptors in young larvae are exclusively of the ciliary type. In old larvae, however, two types of photoreceptors are present and the retina is composed of two segments: a posterior segment with altered ciliary photoreceptors (=type I sensory cells) and an anterior segment with what are presumably rhabdomeric photoreceptors (=type II sensory cells). The anterior retina is interpreted here as an accelerted character. Furthermore, the arrangement of the pigment granules changes during the long larval development being cup shaped in young larvae versus ribbon shaped in old larvae. The findings allow for the conclusions that: (a) the ciliary photoreceptors are correlated with the long larval period of Heteropoda and that (b) the eyes are altered continuously during the larval cycle. This study describes the morphology of the nematode cysts and larvae found in Achatina fulica (giant African snail) in Brazil. Sixty snails were collected in Mesquita, Rio de Janeiro State. Fourteen of the snails were naturally infected. The cysts were spherical, pink colored and measured 0.97 to 1.57 mm in diameter. In the majority of cases they had a single larvae involved in amorphous material. A total of 222 encysted larvae were recovered. Of these, 30 were utilized in the morphological study. The length of the larvae varied from 2.57 to 5.8 mm and they were classified as small - up to 3.5 mm; medium - from 3.53 to 4.5 mm; and large - greater than 4.52 mm. The average length of the larvae in the three groups was 2.85, 3.87 and 5.23 mm, respectively. The larval cuticle was white, shiny and transversally striated until the posterior end of the body. At the anterior end there is a mouth with three lips, with amphids and papillae, followed by a muscular esophagus with average length of 0.61 mm, terminating in an esophageal bulb and having a nerve ring in the middle third of the esophagus, and an intestine with an opening near the posterior end. The tail begins from this opening and has two types of ends: short and abrupt or long and gradually tapering. The difference in the tail end can suggest sexual dimorphism, although no primordial reproductive structures were observed. These characteristics were not sufficient to identify the larvae, so there is a need for further study.  相似文献

During a three-year plankton monitoring at the island of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea), pelagic larvae ofScoloplos armiger (O. F. Müller, 1776) were observed to occur regularly from February to April. Up to the present day, only benthic development within egg cocoons has been described (Anderson, 1959). Planktonic larvae comprise early, ovoid trochophores up to advanced stages with 11 setigers. The main morphological difference between the two larval types is the more numerous differentiation of lateral cilia by the pelagic larvae. Annual alterations in appearance and abundance suggest that reproduction is correlated with water temperature.  相似文献

Mud crabs, Scylla spp. , are commercially important in many Indo-Pacific countries. The larval development of mud crabs has been reported previously as five zoeal and one megalopal stages. This paper reports larval rearing experiments that revealed variability in larval developmental stages in the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, one of four mud crab species. In addition to normal five zoeal stages, an alternative pathway of developing through six zoeal stages was observed for the crab. There were evidences suggested that the appearance of the additional Zoea-VI larvae was associated with unfavourable dietary conditions, including poor quality of diet, inadequate quantity of dietary supply and a period of starvation for newly hatched larvae. Based on exuviae and larval specimens, the morphology of the additional Zoea-VI larvae was described.  相似文献

Morphological changes in the tunic layers and migration of the test cells during swimming period in the larva of the ascidian, Ciona intestinalis , were observed by light and electron microscopy. The swimming period was divided into three stages. In stage 1, further formation of juvenile tunic layer started only in the larval trunk and neck region. In stage 2, the layer became swollen in the ventral and dorsal sides of the neck region and in stage 3, the swelling expanded backward. Concomitantly with these changes, the outermost larval tunic layer (outer cuticular layer), which had been formed before hatching, also swelled in the neck region in stage 2 and formed two humps in stage 3, although the layer did not change in the tail region during the swimming period. Test cells that were present over the entire larval tunic layer in stage 1 began to move from the surface of the fin toward that of the side of the body in stage 2, and finally gathered to form six bands running radially from the anterior end to the posterior end of the trunk region and aligned along the lateral sides of body in the tail region in stage 3. In electron microscopic observations, pseudopodia protruding from the test cells invaded the larval tunic, following which they extended proximate to the juvenile tunic in the trunk region. In the tail region, which had no juvenile tunic layer as that described, the pseudopodia invaded and remained adjacent to the surface of the epidermis or the sensory cilia protruded from the epidermis. Metamorphosis of the larvae, further tunic formation, degradation of adhesive papilla, attachment of larva to the substratum and tail resorption commenced after these morphological changes occurred. The possible role of the test cells in metamorphosis is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The effects of initial larval density, food level, and pond drying regime on intraspecific aggression of larval Ambystoma talpoideum were studied in an artificial pond experiment. Aggression was measured by the frequency of injury of feet, limbs, tail, and the extent of tail loss. Initial larval density had a significant effect on the frequency of foot, limb, and tail loss but not on the extent of tail loss. More larvae reared at medium and high densities sustained injuries than larvae reared at low densities but injuries were not more extensive. Food level had no effect on the four measures of injury. Pond drying regime had no effect on foot loss, limb loss, or extent of tail loss but more larvae reared in constant water level ponds had tail loss than in drying ponds. The frequency of limb and tail loss was negatively correlated to density-dependent survival which was the result of intraspecific predation or cannibalism. These results indicate that substantive levels of body injury, particularly tail loss, can occur at high natural larval densities and may result in a subsequent reduction of growth and survival.  相似文献

The present study aimed to characterize the embryogenesis and larval development of matrinchã (Brycon orthotaenia), through the analysis of egg and larval morphology. Fertilized eggs had a mean diameter of 1.17 mm, with yolk occupying most of the egg (1.06 mm). Embryogenesis lasted for 15 hr at an average temperature of 27°C. At hatching, yolk-sac larvae measured 3.67 mm in mean standard length (SL). Pre-flexion, flexion and post-flexion larva had 5.01, 8.24 and 11.88 mm mean SL, respectively, with significant increases observed particularly in head length, head height, and eye diameter. The yolk persisted in the yolk-sac and pre-flexion stages (5.96 mm SL). The mouth opening could first be observed 13 hr after hatching, and cannibalism was observed 29 hr after hatching in pre-flexion larvae after absorption of the yolk sac; in such cases, the larvae had already developed teeth and a complete digestive tract. For an endangered species such as matrinchã, early life history studies are important because they provide researchers with a better understanding of critical stages of development and thus enhance captive management by rearing and restocking of the species.  相似文献

The oviposition behaviour ofCoelocephalapion aculeatum Fall (Coleoptera: Apionidae), a host specific florivore exploiting an ephemeral resource, was studied in relation to host development. Immature inflorescences of its host, the weedMimosa pigra L. (Mimosaceae), were categorised into 5 developmental stages ranging from first appearance to one day before opening. The duration, weight, percent abortion, and nitrogen content of each stage were measured. Oviposition preferences ofC. aculeatum for all inflorescence stages were determined in multiple choice trials. Newly hatched, larvae were transferred into inflorescences of each stage to determine larval survival as a function of stage. Numbers of eggs laid into inflorescences generally correlated with larval survival except that oviposition was greater in stage 4 inflorescences than expected from the larval survival. Numbers of eggs laid into inflorescences generally correlated with their carrying capacity except that adults avoided stage 5 inflorescences in which larval survival was low. The evolution of oviposition preferences ofC. aculeatum appears to have been influenced by two opposing selective forces. The need to complete development before the inflorescence deteriorated would have selected for oviposition in young inflorescences. The greater availability of food and lower probability of abortion offered by older inflorescences would have selected for oviposition in these. The net outcome of these pressures has resulted in the observed oviposition strategy.  相似文献

Apoptosis (programmed cell death) occurs during normal development of anurans in organs such as gills, gut, and tail. For example, apoptotic cells have been reported in the luminal epithelium along the length of the digestive tract of both larvae and frogs; however, timing of the peak number of such cells varies in different species. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether apoptosis also varies by species during metamorphic restructuring of the skin (as larval epithelium is replaced by adult epidermis). To determine this, cross‐sections of dorsal skin from representative larval stages and frogs of Rana pipiens, R. catesbeiana, and Ceratophrys ornata were incubated with monoclonal antibody against active caspase‐3, one of the main enzymes in the apoptotic cascade. We observed apoptotic cells in the epidermis of the skin of the three species and found that such cells were more numerous in larval stages than in frogs and more abundant in the two ranid species than in C. ornata. Adult and fourth-stage larvae of Paracuaria hispanica n. sp., from the stomach of the Pyrenean desman Galemys pyrenaicus Geoffroy (Insectivora: Talpidae) in northern and central Spain, are described. The new species differs from the other members of the genus Paracuaria (P. adunca and P. soricis), among other morphological details, in its smaller body and spicule sizes, the presence of a cuticular ring around the tip of the female tail, and the existence of lateral alae running longitudinally along its body from the cervical region to the tail. In view of the latter feature, the genus Paracuaria is redefined. The fourth stage larva of the new species is distinguished from that of P. adunca by its monocuspid deirids. P. hispanica occurred in 45% of the 20 host specimens examined.  相似文献

Summary The roles of density-dependent larval survival and cannibalism of larvae as potential mechanisms of population regulation in the newt (Notophthalmus viridescens dorsalis) were evaluated in laboratory and field experiments. In laboratory containers, adults cannibalized larvae and large larvae cannibalized smaller larvae. In artificial ponds, larval survival did not depend on initial larval density. No cannibalism could be demonstrated in the complex environment, although the experiment was powerful enough to detect an ecologically relevant difference in survival. Adult growth was negatively correlated with the final biomass of larval newts, suggesting that the two life stages competed for resources. Larval growth rates were negatively correlated with final larval density, suggesting that larvae competed with each other. The proportion of larvae that became sexually mature at age 7 months (paedomorphs and adults that skipped the eft stage) varied inversely with larval density. Therefore, the potential regulatory mechanisms identified in this study are competition within and between life stages.  相似文献

Monodelphoxyuris dollmeiri n. g., n. sp. is described from the caecum of Monodelphis emiliae (Thomas) (Marsupiala: Monodelphidae) collected in the eastern region of the Andes of Peru. M. dollmeiri n. sp. differs from the closest pinworm described from marsupials in the Neotropics (Didelphoxyuris thylamisis Gardner & Hugot, 1995) in having operculate eggs and males that possess a tip prolonged of tail and a different kind of area rugosa. Several other species of pinworms have been described from marsupials in Australia, but all are characterised by possessing of a buccal capsule that is strongly cuticularised with interradial lamellae. These structures are lacking both in M. dollmeiriandD. thylamisis. Monodelphoxyuris n. g. is characterised by a mouth opening into a depression and lateral alae composed of two longitudinal crests. Males possess an area rugosa composed of six ventral sagittal mamelons, a caudal extremity prolonged by a robust tip of the tail which is directed backwards, four pairs of genital papillae (two pairs lateral adanal and sessile, one pair just posterior to the spicule aperture, and the last pair at posterior extremity and pedunculate). Females possess an opisthodelphic uterus, a reflected ovary and operculate, unembryonated, oval eggs.  相似文献

The anatomy and innervation of the lateral external muscle and sensory cells located in the ventral region of pregenital abdominal segments were examined at the larval and adult stages ofTenebrio molitor (Coleoptera). All seven muscles located in this region degenerate during the pupal stage, whilst only the lateral external median (lem) appears in the adult. Backfillings of the motor nerve innervating this muscle reveal that, at both larval and adult stages, it is innervated by ten neurons. Intracellular records from the muscle fibres show that two neurons are inhibitory, and at least five are excitatory. There are also two unpaired neurons. A variety of sensory organs are located in the ventral region of the larvae, whilst only campaniform sensilla are found in the adult. At both stages, the innervation pattern of the sensory nerve branches is very similar. Also, the central projections of the sensory cells occupy similar neuropilar areas. Finally, prolonged intracellular records from the lem muscle revealed that, at the larval stage, it participates only in segmental or intersegmental reflexes, whilst in the adult it has a primary expiratory role in ventilation. The results show that extensive changes occur in the number of muscles located in the ventral region of the pregenital abdominal segments, as well as in the arrangement and number of sensory neurons, in the structure of the exoskeleton, and even in the central nervous system. In contrast, only minor changes are observed in the sensory and motor nerve branches, in the sensory projections, and in the number and the location of the motoneurons innervating the lateral external median muscle. The early ontogenetic stages of Paralomis spinosissima Birstein and Vinogradow, 1972, are described in detail and illustrated, with notes on morphological variability observed. Larval and early juvenile development was described to the crab I instar reared under controlled conditions of temperature and food supply. The abbreviated larval development invariably passed through two zoeal stages and the benthic megalopa stage. The larval development was completed without food supply, and food Artemia nauplii were first given after moult to the crab-I stage. Simplification and retarded development of the mouthparts are discussed as a function of lecithotrophy of these larvae and based on morphology no facultative feeding mode is suggested. Lecithotrophy in the Southern Ocean Lithodidae is discussed to be an adaptation allowing independence from seasonal food availability at high latitudes.  相似文献

Tail-tip clipping is a common technique for collecting tissue samples from amphibian larvae and adults. Surprisingly, studies of this invasive sampling procedure or of natural tail clipping – i.e., bites inflicted by predators including conspecifics - on the performance and fitness of aquatic larval stages of urodeles are scarce. We conducted two studies in which we assessed the effects of posterior tail clipping (~30 percent of tail) on Near Eastern fire salamander (Salamandra infraimmaculata) larvae. In a laboratory study, we checked regeneration rates of posterior tail-tip clipping at different ages. Regeneration rates were hump-shaped, peaking at the age of ~30 days and then decreasing. This variation in tail regeneration rates suggests tradeoffs in resource allocation between regeneration and somatic growth during early and advanced development. In an outdoor artificial pond experiment, under constant larval densities, we assessed how tail clipping of newborn larvae affects survival to, time to, and size at metamorphosis. Repeated measures ANOVA on mean larval survival per pond revealed no effect of tail clipping. Tail clipping had correspondingly no effect on larval growth and development expressed in size (mass and snout-vent length) at, and time to, metamorphosis. We conclude that despite the given variation in tail regeneration rates throughout larval ontogeny, clipping of 30% percent of the posterior tail area seems to have no adverse effects on larval fitness and survival. We suggest that future use of this imperative tool for the study of amphibian should take into account larval developmental stage during the time of application and not just the relative size of the clipped tail sample.  相似文献
