The coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is one of the major insect pests of coffee worldwide. The present study was designed to assess the level of infestation of coffee berries at different developmental stages across different altitudes and coffee management systems. The experiment was carried out at three locations in southwestern Ethiopia under two coffee management systems and four coffee berry development stages with three replications. Results of the study showed significantly highest proportion of damaged berries (37.5%), number of holes per berry (10.88) and number of adult CBB per berry (7.55) on dried leftover berries at low-altitude study sites. On the other hand, the lowest mean percent damaged berries, number of holes per berry and number of adults were recorded at mid- and high-altitude study sites. The study also showed that, CBB caused significantly highest damage in plantation coffee management system than garden coffee. Results of this study highlight proper harvesting at red ripe stage in order to minimise incidence of CBB. It is also important to design integrated management strategies to mitigate CBB damage especially in lowland plantation coffee production systems.  相似文献

Ants frequently prevent herbivores from damaging plants. In agroecosystems they may provide pest control services, although their contributions are not always appreciated. Here we compared the ability of eight ant species to prevent the coffee berry borer from colonizing coffee berries with a field exclusion experiment. We removed ants from one branch (exclusion) and left ants to forage on a second branch (control) before releasing 20 berry borers on each branch. After 24 h, six of eight species had significantly reduced the number of berries bored by the berry borer compared to exclusion treatment branches. While the number of berries per branch was a significant covariate explaining the number of berries bored, ant activity (that varied greatly among species) was not a significant factor in models. This study is the first field experiment to provide evidence that a diverse group of ant species limit the berry borer from colonizing coffee berries.  相似文献

Isolates of Colletotrichum spp. from coffee berries and bark in Kenya fell into four categories, distinguishable by their cultural characteristics on agar. Three of these proved non-pathogenic; the fourth invariably infected both wounded and unwounded berries and caused coffee berry disease. The sporulating capacity on bark of the various Colletotrichum strains showed peaks in the periods before both the long and the short rains. The pathogenic strain made up only a very small proportion of the whole Colletotrichum complex on the bark and its sporulating capacity never exceeded twenty spores/cm2/h. By contrast, a green berry with an active coffee berry disease lesion produced 5×104conidia/h and an infected ripe berry twice as many. It is concluded that in any year, regardless of cropping pattern, diseased berries are likely to play an important role in the development of coffee berry disease.  相似文献

The potential of the eulophid parasitoid Phymastichus coffea LaSalle to control coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) populations under field conditions in Colombia was evaluated. Parasitoid adults were released one, five and nine days after artificial infestations of 90-, 150- and 210-day-old coffee berries with H. hampei females. The position of the beetle inside the berry and the parasitism levels were assessed ten days after each P. coffea release. Parasitism of H. hampei by P. coffea was significantly affected by the age of the berries at the time of infestation, and by the position of the beetle inside the berries. Highest levels of parasitism were recorded in 150-day-old berries (75-85%) and in 90-day-old berries (75%) when P. coffea were released one day after the artificial infestation with H. hampei. In 150-day-old berries, highest levels of parasitism were recorded for H. hampei found in the outer layer of the endosperm followed by beetles penetrating the exocarp. Increasing the time of P. coffea releases after the artificial infestations with H. hampei led to decreased levels of parasitism in beetles attacking 90- and 150-day-old coffee berries. Low levels of parasitism were recorded in H. hampei females infesting older coffee berries because most of the beetles had already constructed galleries deep in the endosperm of the berries, i.e. out of reach of the parasitoid. The potential of P. coffea for biological control of coffee berry borer in Colombia is discussed.  相似文献

Devices are described which were used to catch rain-dispersed Colletotrichum conidia within and between coffee trees infected with coffee berry disease (CBD). The amount of CBD inoculum dispersed was related to the number of diseased and sporulating berries but not to the sporulating capacity of the fungus in maturing bark. Wet conditions encouraged spore production and dispersal, and spraying with fungicides prolonged sporulation of diseased berries. The amount of pathogenic inoculum, subsequent disease development and crop losses were greatly increased by the presence of only a few diseased berries during growth of the young crop. Spore concentrations were greatest close to diseased berries, but most spores within trees were dispersed downwards through the canopy. Some spores were dispersed between trees by wind-driven rain-splash and vectors such as pickers. Inoculum sources in tree tops are most important during CBD epidemics and disease can be restricted by removing or spraying the tops of multiple-stem trees. The currently existing sample procedures available for decision-making regarding the control of the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to perform, compromising their adoption. In addition, the damage functions incorporated in such decision levels only consider the quantitative losses, while dismissing the qualitative losses. Traps containing ethanol, methanol, and benzaldehyde may allow cheap and easy decision-making. Our objective was to determine the economic injury level (EIL) for the adults of the coffee berry borer by using attractant-baited traps. We considered both qualitative and quantitative losses caused by the coffee borer in estimating the EILs. These EILs were determined for conventional and organic coffee under high and average plant yield. When the quantitative losses caused by H. hampei were considered alone, the EILs ranged from 7.9 to 23.7% of bored berries for high and average-yield conventional crops, respectively. For high and average-yield organic coffee the ELs varied from 24.4 to 47.6% of bored berries, respectively. When qualitative and quantitative losses caused by the pest were considered together, the EIL was 4.3% of bored berries for both conventional and organic coffee. The EILs for H. hampei associated to the coffee plants in the flowering, pinhead fruit, and ripening fruit stages were 426, 85, and 28 adults per attractive trap, respectively.  相似文献

Phenology of the coffee plant and infestation by coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari were studied in relation to trapping of adult females in kairomone-baited traps in a coffee plantation in New Caledonia. In a 0.4 ha coffee field, a group of 27 trees located along a transect beginning at an early infestation point was selected. The number of green, red and dry coffee berries, along with the number of larvae, adult males and females per berry was determined monthly from October 1993 to July 1994. Twelve, red multifunnel traps, each baited with a solution of methanol:ethanol (1:1 ratio, a mean solution release rate of 1 g/day) were placed within the coffee field, along the transect, within the selected trees, grouped in four zones named 1–4. Two additional traps were located outside the plantation.
The proportion of infested berries increased as berry maturity and harvest date approached, while the infestation rate decreased with distance from the epicentre. Over the 10 months of the study, beetle populations increased and spread from the original infestation point across the different zones, according to distance and availability of berries or appropriate physiological status. Traps near the epicentre caught the largest numbers of beetles. Linear relationship between trap catch and infestation level was demonstrated. Traps placed outside the field approached zero catch. Trap catch was highly influenced by rainfall events, and the highest captures coincided with rapidly declining berry numbers on trees. There are good prospects for management of this insect using traps.  相似文献

Field experiments comparing six spraying programmes and two fungicides for control of coffee berry disease were carried out at three sites during 1968. These established that protection of the crop by sprays applied throughout the long rains (February–July) gave the best control and increased yields threefold. Early season spray programmes, which reduced the sporulating capacity of the pathogen in coffee twigs, but which ceased before the end of the rainy season, gave no disease control in the late crop (harvested October-December) and yields were less than in unsprayed controls. All programmes which gave protection at the onset of the rains gave some disease control in the early crop (harvested June-August). Captafol (‘Ortho-Difolatan’ 80 WP) was better than a 50% copper formulation (‘Perenox’). Conditions suitable for infection, as determined from meteorological records, occurred frequently during both rainy seasons. Estimates of sporulating capacity and data from spore trappings showed that although inoculum from the bark might initiate an epidemic, subsequent disease progress was more dependent upon spores derived from diseased berries; these accounted for most of the inoculum dispersed during the greater part of the season. Removal of the early crop, which was very small, had no detectable effect on disease in the late crop. Although losses were greatest with early season spray programmes, these did nevertheless delay the onset of the epidemic. However, the subsequent rate of disease increase was greatest and ‘scab’ lesion formation least in these treatments. ‘Scab’ lesions were most abundant in those treatments which caused least delay; in unsprayed coffee, it appeared that early exposure to infection resulted in ‘scab’ lesion formation which subsequently retarded the rate of disease progress. Tree height was positively correlated with disease incidence, but there was little effect of tree aspect. Crop density had a small effect on disease incidence within branches.  相似文献

Both the increase in severity and extent of coffee berry disease (CBD) during the 1960s and the failure of early-season sprays to control it have been attributed to changes in climatic conditions and cropping patterns. A critical analysis of rainfall data since 1951, when CBD first appeared in the East Rift coffee districts of Kenya, produces no evidence that conditions affecting CBD development were any different in the 1960s than in the 1950s, in either high-or low-altitude coffee-growing areas. A marked increase in overlapping crops occurred during the late 1950s, and this was caused mainly by a change in pruning methods. The increased disease hazard from this change of cropping pattern cannot account for the failure of early season sprays, which were successful before 1962. An estimate of the time of main crop flowering shows that only in those years when flowering was early and the rainy season finished early did early-season sprays achieve substantial benefits. It is concluded that their effect in these years was obtained by fungicidal protection of the crop throughout most of the rainy season, and that their failure in other years contributed to the worsening disease situation.  相似文献

The suitability of a mixture of plaster of Paris and charcoal as a means to regulate the moisture content of coffee berries and the relative humidity (moisture conditions) of the rearing environment and its impact on rearing the coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), was evaluated under laboratory conditions using two types of coffee. Coffee berries were kept individually in vials with a 1-cm layer of the mixture, and the fresh weight of the berries was assessed, as well as the penetration of CBB into the berries, its survival, and its progeny production over a period of 55 days. Significantly higher survival and progeny production was achieved when using the mixture regardless of the coffee type. Compared to the vials without plaster of Paris/charcoal, a six- to sevenfold increase in survivorship of the F1 was recorded when using plaster of Paris/charcoal and in the latter treatment berries harboured on average more than 100 individuals, whereas only 1.7 in the vials without plaster of Paris.  相似文献

1. The coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) (Ferrari) is the most important pest of coffee production worldwide. 2. The hypothesis that the tropical fire ant, Solenopsis geminata Westwood, indirectly protects the coffee berry borer by suppressing other ant species that are the coffee berry borer's primary predators was tested. 3. It was found that removing S. geminata from coffee plots significantly increased the disappearance of adult coffee berry borer beetles from coffee berries compared with control plots. An average of 6% of beetles disappeared from plots with S. geminata whereas 23% of beetles disappeared from plots from which S. geminata was removed. This pattern was observed on two shade coffee farms with marked differences in ant species composition, one in the rainforest in central Costa Rica and one in the cloudforest in northwest Costa Rica. 4. If the results of this small‐scale study can be replicated on the farm level, then S. geminata suppression may represent a new management technique for the coffee berry borer throughout Central and South America.  相似文献

Grape berry, a nonclimacteric fruit, during ripening turns from green, hard and acidic to coloured, soft and sweet. Many studies have focused on dynamic changes of mRNA levels, metabolites, sugars or individual proteins, but this is the first report of a proteomic approach applied to the screening of the most prominent variations that take place during berry ripening. Vitis vinifera cv. 'Nebbiolo Lampia' berries were collected at 10-day intervals, starting 1 month after flowering to complete ripe stage; total protein extracts from deseeded berries were separated by 2-DE. A total of 730 spots were detected in the 2-DE gels. 118 protein spots, differentially expressed during berry development, were subjected to MALDI-TOF analysis. Ninety-three of them were identified, corresponding to 101 proteins. The majority of proteins were linked to metabolism, energy and protein synthesis and fate. In comparison to published surveys of major berry proteins, fewer proteins related to stress response and more proteins related to cell structure were differentially expressed. Our data confirm a general decrease of glycolysis during ripening, and an increase of PR proteins in the range of 20-35 kDa. They furthermore suggest that oxidative stress decreases during ripening while extensive cytoskeleton rearrangement takes place in this period.  相似文献

Investigations have been made into the possibility of a chemical basis for resistance to coffee berry disease in certain Coffea arabica varieties. Chloroform extracts of the cuticular wax of berries, purified by fractionation and chromatography, proved toxic to a range of fungi including Colletotrichum coffeanum, the causal organism of coffee berry disease. Leaf cuticular wax also contained this fungitoxic principle, though at a lower level. The possible importance of this antifungal material in determining resistance to coffee berry disease is discussed.  相似文献

Microarray analysis of Vitis vinifera cv. Shiraz developing berries has revealed the expression patterns of several categories of genes. Microarray slides were constructed from 4,608 PCR-amplified cDNA clones derived from a ripening grape berry cDNA library. The mRNA expression levels of the genes represented by these cDNAs were measured in flowers, week 2 post-flowering whole berries, week 5, week 8, week 10 (véraison, green berries), week 12 and week 13 berry skin. In addition, a comparison of RNA expression in pigmented and unpigmented berry skin at véraison (week 10) was undertaken. Image and statistical analysis revealed four sets of genes with distinctive and similar expression profiles over the course of berry development. The first set was composed of genes which had maximum RNA expression in flowers, followed by a steady decrease in expression. The most prominent group within this set were genes which have a role in photosynthesis. The second set of cDNAs was dominated by genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and had a peak of expression week 2 post-flowering. The data indicate co-ordinate regulation of flavonoid biosynthetic genes which code for the enzymes 4-coumarate-CoA ligase, chalcone synthase, chalcone isomerase, flavonone hydroxylase, anthocyanidin reductase and cytochrome b5. The third set of cDNAs exhibited maximum expression week 5 post-flowering, midway between flowering and véraison, a period of rapid berry growth. This set of cDNAs is dominated by genes which code for structural cell wall proteins. The fourth set of genes was dramatically up-regulated at véraison and remained up-regulated until 13 weeks post-flowering. This set of genes was composed of a diverse range of genes, a reflection of the complexity of ripening, most with no known function.  相似文献

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is a weak pathogen of coffee that infects ripe berries at dark red stage causing necrotic lesions, but only penetrates up to the second superficial layers of the pericarp at the rose and pink stages. C. kahawae, the causal agent of coffee berry disease (CBD) and responsible for 70–80% of crop loss, infects berries at any stage of development. When green berries are first inoculated with C. kahawae and then at 2, 72 or 96 h later with C. gloeosporioides, the necrotic lesions were significantly larger than in the controls, and were much more evident when the berries were incubated at the optimum growth temperature of 28 °C for C. gloeosporioides. Isolations from the lesions induced by the first inoculations with C. kahawae followed by inoculation with C. gloeosporioides revealed that all or most of the time the recovered isolates of the latter. Thus, C. gloeosporioides can overwhelm C. kahawae under conditions of higher environmental temperature and humidity and may enhance the CBD infection process under field conditions.  相似文献

Nonconsumptive effects (NCE) of parasites on hosts vary with habitat complexity thereby modifying trait-mediated effects on lower trophic levels. In coffee agroecosystems, Pseudacteon sp. phorid fly parasites negatively affect Azteca instabilis F. Smith ants via NCE thereby indirectly benefiting prey. It is unknown how differences in habitat complexity influence Azteca-phorid interactions or how phorids affect the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari), an important pest of coffee (Coffea arabica L). We tested the following hypotheses in field and lab experiments to find the impact of NCE of phorids on A. instabilis and trait-mediated indirect effects of phorids on the coffee berry borer: (1) Phorid effects on A. instabilis differ between complex and simple shade habitats and (2) Phorids, by modifying A. instabilis behavior, indirectly affect coffee berry borer abilities to invade coffee berries. Phorids had greater impacts on A. instabilis activity in low-shade farms, but differences in phorid impacts were not mediated by phorid density or light availability. In the lab, phorids had strong cascading effects on abilities of A. instabilis to deter coffee berry borers. Without phorids, A. instabilis limited coffee berry borer attacks, whereas when the coffee berry borer was alone or with A. instabilis and phorids, more coffee fruits were attacked by coffee berry borer. These results indicate that A. instabilis has stronger biological control potential in high-shade farms, but the exact mechanism deserves further attention.  相似文献

Little is known about the impact of temperature on proanthocyanidin (PA) accumulation in grape skins, despite its significance in berry composition and wine quality. Field-grown grapes (cv. Merlot) were cooled during the day or heated at night by +/-8 °C, from fruit set to véraison in three seasons, to determine the effect of temperature on PA accumulation. Total PA content per berry varied only in one year, when PA content was highest in heated berries (1.46 mg berry(-1)) and lowest in cooled berries (0.97 mg berry(-1)). In two years, cooling berries resulted in a significant increase in the proportion of (-)-epigallocatechin as an extension subunit. In the third year, rates of berry development, PA accumulation, and the expression levels of several genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis were assessed. Heating and cooling berries altered the initial rates of PA accumulation, which was correlated strongly with the expression of core genes in the flavonoid pathway. Both heating and cooling altered the rate of berry growth and coloration, and the expression of several structural genes within the flavonoid pathway.  相似文献

Superparasitism by Phymastichus coffea LaSalle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a parasitoid of adults of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), was recorded under field conditions in a coffee plantation in Colombia. Parasitoid adults were released 1, 5, and 9 days after artificial infestations of 90‐, 150‐, and 210‐day‐old coffee berries with H. hampei females. The position of the beetle inside the berry and the number of P. coffea larvae per female host were assessed 10 days after each parasitoid release. Under laboratory conditions, P. coffea usually lays two eggs per host, one female and one male. In our studies, we often recorded more than six P. coffea larvae in an individual host and mean numbers of larvae per host ranged from two to 4.45. Superparasitism by P. coffea under field conditions was influenced by the age of the coffee berries, which is the most important factor determining the speed of penetration by H. hampei, and therefore the time the beetles are exposed to a P. coffea attack. The number of parasitoid larvae in each H. hampei female gradually decreased with the age of the berry, and also linearly decreased with the time of parasitoid release. Age‐dependent effects of coffee berries that alter the ratio of available hosts to searching parasitoids by providing refuges to the herbivore, largely determine the extent of superparasitism of H. hampei by P. coffea under fields conditions in Colombia.  相似文献
