Recent molecular evidence suggests that at least eight species of bonefishes (Albuliformes: Albulidae: Albula) are found worldwide (Colborn et al. 2001). Adults of most of these species, including two that are restricted to the eastern Pacific Ocean (Albula sp. A from the Gulf of California and Albula sp. C from the Gulf of Panama), have not been formally described. Because cryptic species of bonefishes are known to occur sympatrically, population genetics data provide an important tool for taxonomic studies on this group. Isozyme analyses conducted on larval, juvenile and adult bonefish from the Guaymas region of the central Gulf of California confirmed that only a single species (Albula sp. A) was present there. In addition, analysis of a segment of the cytochrome b gene from three adult Albula collected from coastal waters of southern California revealed high sequence homology with Albula sp. A, suggesting that the southern California specimens were conspecific with those from Guaymas. However, the southern distributional limit of Albula sp. A, and whether there are regions where Albula sp. A and C occur sympatrically, are unknown. The historical background of the available name Atopichthys esunculus Garman, 1899 [= Albula esuncula (Garman, 1899)], and problems associated with the nomenclature of the two species of eastern Pacific bonefishes, are summarized. The systematic status of the related shafted bonefish, Dixonina (= Albula) nemoptera Fowler, 1911, is also reviewed.  相似文献

We surveyed the dinoflagellate genus Prorocentrum Ehrenberg in Mexican Pacific waters, where it is rather common and sometimes causes red tides in coastal areas or shrimp farms. Material collected from Baja California and the Gulf of California was analyzed. Thirteen species were identified, all of them planktonic (although P. mexicanum is also epiphytic). All species are described by light microscopy, and most are also described by scanning electron microscopy; comments on morphology, taxonomy and distribution are made. Red tides were caused by P. dentatum, P. minimum and P. triestinum. Prorocentrum mexicanum and P. minimum were suspected of being toxic. Four species, previously reported in the Gulf of California, were not found. A total of 18 species, including the new records P. dactylum and P. lebourae have been to date reported from the Mexican Pacific.  相似文献

Plankton and surface sediment samples from the Gulf of California were examined to determine the present geographic distribution of silicoflagellate species in this area. Variations in the species composition of the silicoflagellate assemblage were found to be related to water mass distributions. Eight species were identified in these samples. Octactis pulchra is associated with high levels of primary productivity in the surface waters and is found in greatest abundance in the central Gulf of California. Dictyocha messanensis dominates the silicoflagellate assemblage in stations outside the Gulf of California and increases in relative abundance with decreasing amounts of Octactis pulchra. Dictyocha calida, Dictyocha sp. A, and Dictyocha sp. B are associated with equatorial waters and have the highest relative abundance near the mouth of the Gulf. Dictyocha epiodon and Distephanus speculum are associated with cold California Current Water, and Dictyocha epiodon is present in minor abundance in Gulf samples. Dictyocha sp. 2 has a patchy distribution with low relative abundance.  相似文献

Synopsis The duration of natural in-beach-sand incubation of Gulf of California and California grunion embryos is dictated by the tidally-driven wave activity in their respective habitats. Analyses of these tidal regimes reveal that the incubation period can be three times longer on beaches of the California coast than on those of the northern Gulf.In response to the more irregular tides of California, Leuresthes tenuis, the less primitive of the two species, has evolved an egg volume 310% larger than the Gulf grunion, L. sardina. The. larger egg not only supplies greater yolk reserves for differentiation, growth and maintenance, but also produces a larger embryo. The more abundant yolk stores and greater embryo size helps California grunion embryos to remain viable in the sand longer than those of the Gulf grunion.  相似文献

A growing body of knowledge on the diversity and evolution of intertidal isopods across different regions worldwide has enhanced our understanding on biological diversification at the poorly studied, yet vast, sea–land interface. High genetic divergences among numerous allopatric lineages have been identified within presumed single broadly distributed species. Excirolana mayana is an intertidal isopod that is commonly found in sandy beaches throughout the Gulf of California. Its distribution in the Pacific extends from this basin to Colombia and in the Atlantic from Florida to Venezuela. Despite its broad distribution and ecological importance, its evolutionary history has been largely neglected. Herein, we examined phylogeographic patterns of E. mayana in the Gulf of California and the Caribbean, based on maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from four mitochondrial genes (16S rDNA, 12S rDNA, cytochrome oxidase I gene, and cytochrome b gene). We compared the phylogeographic patterns of E. mayana with those of the coastal isopods Ligia and Excirolana braziliensis (Gulf of California and Caribbean) and Tylos (Gulf of California). We found highly divergent lineages in both, the Gulf of California and Caribbean, suggesting the presence of multiple species. We identified two instances of Atlantic–Pacific divergences. Some geographical structuring among the major clades found in the Caribbean is observed. Haplotypes from the Gulf of California form a monophyletic group sister to a lineage found in Venezuela. Phylogeographic patterns of E. mayana in the Gulf of California differ from those observed in Ligia and Tylos in this region. Nonetheless, several clades of E. mayana have similar distributions to clades of these two other isopod taxa. The high levels of cryptic diversity detected in E. mayana also pose challenges for the conservation of this isopod and its fragile environment, the sandy shores.  相似文献

A new paralichthyid flounder,Citharichthys gnathus, is described from 25 specimens from the Galapagos Islands. The new species strongly resemblesC. fragilis Gilbert, distributed in the Gulf of California and adjacent waters, in general appearance, and meristic and morphometric characters, but is distinguished from the latter by two adult characters, a remarkable bony knob at the anterior tip of the lower jaw and larger proportion of snout length in standard length.  相似文献

Seven sites in Bahía de los Angeles, northern Gulf of California, were sampled seasonally over a three-year period. Five species of brown algae previously not recorded from this bay were identified: Ralfsia pacifica, Sporochnus balleanus, Hydroclathrus clathratus, Colpomenia sinuosa and Padina mexicana. Of these, H. clathratus also provided a new record for the northern Gulf of California. One species previously recorded from the bay, Dictyopteris undulata, was not observed. On a seasonal basis, temperature and biodiversity showed an inverse relationship: highest species numbers occurred in spring, when temperatures were lowest, and lowest species numbers occurred in autumn when temperatures were highest. Most species of brown algae in Baífa de los Angeles are annuals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Eighteen species of deep-sea bivalves were collected below the Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) core off western Mexico. This material was obtained during the research cruises XVI, XVIB (off the northwestern Peninsula of Baja California), and VIII (Gulf of California) of the TALUD project aboard the R/V El Puma. The samples were taken with an epibenthic sledge (710–2077?m deep) and with a box corer (750–2600?m). The species belong to 10 families: Solemyidae, Nuculanidae, Malletiidae, Tindariidae, Limopsidae, Propeamussiidae, Tellinidae, Periplomatidae, Poromyidae and Lyonsiellidae. Environmental parameters (oxygen, salinity, sediments composition and temperature) are given for each sampling station. Tolerance to oxygen depletion is analysed for all deep-water species collected by the TALUD survey off the Baja California Peninsula. The additional file includes shell characteristics and distributional information for each species.  相似文献

Samuraia tabularasa, the samurai hydroid, a previously unreported genus and species of athecate hydrozoan, family Hydrocorynidae, is described, based upon field and laboratory observations. Colonies live attached to rocky substrates in the middle of the intertidal zone in the northern and central Gulf of California, Mexico. The principal characters that allow this species to be referred to a new genus are associated with its mode of sexual reproduction by eumedusoids that can remain attached to the colony, or be released as ephemeral, rudimentary structures. This is in contrast to the feeding, free medusae produced by the two species of the other genus, Hydrocoryne, in the family Hydrocorynidae.  相似文献

Species separation in the genus Laurencia (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) is complicated by the high degree of morphological variation within the species. Chemical investigations on a worldwide basis of over 15 species indicate that 1 or more of the halogenated natural products synthesized by Laurencia are unique to each species. Our chemical investigations of Laurencia pacifica, as presently understood from the Gulf of California, indicate that more than 1 species had been included under this name. Thin layer chromatographic (TLC) comparisons of the halogenated components of 3 recognizable forms of “L. pacifica” were completed. The results revealed 3 distinct forms, with halogenated products unique to each form. In each form the observed chemical characters had been previously isolated and identified and could now be positively assigned to their algal source. Comparisons were also conducted with L. pacifica Kylin (1941) from the type locality of the species, La Jolla, California, and revealed that it contained another halogenated product different from those isolated from the Gulf species. We conclude that 3 species of Laurencia have been elucidated in the Gulf of California and these are separate from L. pacifica Kylin. Each species can be distinguished by its characteristic array of halogenated compounds. Comparative thin layer chromatography of the lipid components of morphologically similar Laurencia species should prove to be a useful new taxonomic aid.  相似文献

Agar properties of two potentially commercial important seaweeds from the Gulf of California were studied. Maximum yield in Gracilaria vermiculophylla (45.7%) occurred during the summer months, coinciding with high water temperatures (31°C) whereas minimum yields (11.6%) were obtained during the coldest months of the year when populations of this species diminish in the bay. Gracilariopsis longissima showed two yield peaks, one in spring and another in fall, before the maximum and minimum seawater temperatures. Gel strength in native agar from the two species was low (<22.5 g cm−2) for most of the year. G. vermiculophylla native agar showed a slight increase in gel strength from June to August, which were the hottest months. Maximum value was 85 g cm−1 in August. Maximum gel strength in G. longissima was observed in October (91 g cm−1), and an unusual native agar with no detectable gel strength was observed in March and April samples. Gelling temperatures range from 27.7 to 36.5°C in G. vermiculophyla and from 26.6 to 34.9°C in G. longissima, meanwhile melting points were 73.9 – 53.5°C and 75.5 – 56.6°C, respectively. Sulfate content was high, 6.3–13.9% in G. vermiculophylla and 1.9–11.9% in G. longissima, and on the other hand 3,6 anhydrogalactose content was low 12.1–26.7% and 9.1–23%, respectively compared to other species. Results obtained showed that mean native agar yields of Gracilaria vermiculophylla and Gracilariopsis longissima from the Gulf of California are comparable to other tropical Gracilaria. However, the low gel strength, high sulfate content and low 3,6 anhydrogalactose content observed in the native agar extracted from these species make this an agaroid, thus alternative methods of extraction should be used to evaluate the possibility of commercial utilization of both species.  相似文献

This study reports the size–weight relationships (SWR) for nine batoid species that are frequently fished by the artisanal fisheries in the southern Gulf of California. Analysis included a total of 2,012 specimens, caught from October 2013 to July 2016. The slope values (b) oscillated from 2.80 to 3.56. Growth was isometric for five species and positively allometric for four. There were differences in SWR between sexes for three species being in all cases the female greater and heavier than males. This is the first analysis of SWR for the batoid species studied in the Gulf of California.  相似文献

A new species of poecilostomatoid copepod, Erebonaster spinulosus (Erebonasteridae), is described on the basis of a single female from a depth of 3 266 m at cold seeps near the base of the West Florida Escarpment in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Among its distinctive features are: the large body highly ornamented with setules and spinules, the rostrum with small median teeth and lateral setules, the claw of the second maxilla with a prominent knob on the concave margin, the maxilliped ornamented with setules and its claw bearing a digitiform process near the seta, the third segment of the exopod of leg 4 with the formula II,I,4, and the highly ornamented leg 5 having on the free segment a very long seta 9 times the length of the segment. The genus Erebonaster now contains two species, the previously described Erebonaster protentipes found in 2000 m at the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California, and the new Erebonaster spinulosus.  相似文献

The parasitoid complex of brown soft scale, Coccus hesperidum L., a multivoltine soft scale, was determined in southern California citrus over the period February 2004–March 2006. The survey was conducted by placing brown soft scale-infested yucca leaves in the canopy of citrus trees and subsequently rearing individually isolated parasitized scales in the laboratory. A total of 14 species parasitized brown soft scale in the field, the most abundant ones belonging to the genus Metaphycus Mercet (75%). The most abundant parasitoid species was Metaphycus angustifrons Compere (38% parasitism), and this is a new record of establishment for this species in California. Coccophagus species accounted for only 11% parasitism. There were important spatio-temporal differences across the parasitoid complex survey locations. We also found that the five most abundant encyrtid parasitoid species showed preferences for scales of different sizes. Our results have implications for biological control of citricola scale, Coccus pseudomagnoliarum (Kuwana), an important pest of citrus in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. Notably, this species is nearly absent in southern California. Brown soft scale is considered to be an alternate host for parasitoids of citricola scale, a univoltine soft scale, at times when the latter species is unavailable for parasitism.  相似文献

Shallow subtidal populations of sea anemones occupying hard substrates along the California (Pacific) and Gulf of Maine (Atlantic) coasts of the USA are compared. The diversity of anemones in the southern Gulf of Maine to 35 m is low (4 species) in contrast to similar habitats in California (at least 11 species), but parallel patterns of individual size, distribution and predation impacts occur. Water motion influences depth distribution and size, while predation affects size, population structure and habitat selection. The nudibranch Aeolidia papillosa exerts a similar pressure on population structure in some anemone species in both areas as a size selective predator. The seastar Dermasterias imbricata appears to magnify the selective pressure for large size in the eastern Pacific coastal zone. Interspecific aggression of anemones determines some distribution patterns in areas of overlap.  相似文献

A New, Commercially Valuable Chanterelle Species, Cantharellus californicus sp. nov., Associated with Live Oak in California, USA. The prominent golden chanterelle of California’s oak woodlands is characterized as a new species, Cantharellus californicus sp. nov., using molecular and morphological data. Our observations indicate that it is the largest Cantharellus species in the world, with individual sporocraps commonly weighing 1/2 kilogram (kg) (or 1 pound) or more when mature. Other Cantharellus species in California are compared and evaluated, including their known ectomycorrhizal hosts. The California oak chanterelle is an economically valuable species, and some observations on its commercial harvest are presented.  相似文献

Two new planktonic diatom species of the genusChaetoceros are described herein:Ch. octagonus andCh. rectus, from material of Baja California coasts and the Gulf of California, respectively;Ch. rectus was also found in a sample from Australian waters.Ch. octagonus is a robust species, with a characteristic pyramidal valve shape, heavily silicified valves and setae, and one central rimoportula on every valve in the chain; it is compared with related species, which show a similar morphology, especially by electron microscopy. It belongs into subg.Chaetoceros, sect.Borealia. Ch. rectus is placed in subg.Hyalochaete, and provisionally within sect.Anastomosantia. Its major characters are: chains, cells, and setae are delicate and fragile, cells are joined in the chain by a bridge which connects sibling intercalary setae, valves and setae are weakly silicified, and one rimoportula is present on terminal valves only. Comparison is made with another species of the same section.Ch. rectus shows a different manner of chain-forming within the genus than previously described in the literature.  相似文献

This work is based on recent studies describing new species in Spiochaetopterus (Annelida Polychaeta). New morphological features were brought to light in studies of adults from widely separate areas. A parallel study of planktonic larvae in three areas (northern Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of California, Mediterranean Sea) led to the isolation of several larval categories, each related to an already described species. The large number of species already described shows that the founder species has been subjected to an intense adaptive radiation and that in spite of the ability of larvae to disseminate, each species now inhabits only a limited geographical area. Teleplanic larvae are thus not as effective as is generally supposed in controlling the adult area. The new paradigm implies that individuals from widely separate areas belong to species other than Spiochaetopterus costarum. Although larvae of each species are capable of covering long distances, larval transport may be interrupted at various stages of the life cycle for a variety of reasons. The most powerful causes of failure are not linked to the lifespan of planktonic larvae, but rather to constraints on the ability to realize physiological functions, including fecundation. The putative cosmopolitanism of S. costarum, before new species were described, was the result of both inadequate morphological examination and the use of questionable ecological arguments linked to larval dispersal.  相似文献

In taxonomic studies (in preparation) of the genus Botryllophilus from the eastern and western coastal waters of the Pacific and from the northern Gulf of California, we have found that the females are morphologically divided into 2 types. The 2 morpho-types in our material, which includes 10 species, are characterized by features of the urosome including anal segment and caudal rami, rostrum, antennule, antenna, mandible, maxillule, maxilla, maxilliped, 1st to 5th legs, and the apparatus at the oviducal aperture. These characters are described and the significance of the recognition of the 2 morpho-types is discussed for the purpose of solving taxonomic problems in Botryllophilus.  相似文献

We report on a latitudinal pattern in the structure and species composition of epibenthic macroinvertebrate communities on rocky reefs along a gradient of eight degrees of latitude in the Gulf of California. We provide quantitative evidence of a prominent shift in the taxa dominating these communities, particularly the sessile taxa (Cnidaria, Bivalvia, Annelida, Ascidiacea and Porifera). This pattern was not found in non-sessile taxa (Echinodermata, Decapoda, Cephalopoda, Gastropoda and Polycladida). Based on Bray–Curtis similarity and indicator species analysis we found that the macroinvertebrates of rocky reefs in the Gulf of California are distributed in three broad regions, indicating that sessile taxa are creating such a structure and are related to environmental changes tied to latitude. The northern region (>28° N) was a temperate zone with the coolest water in winter and highest chlorophyll a concentrations, where Octocorallia of the genus Muricea were the dominant taxa. The central region (~24–28° N) had a mix of oceanographic features of the northern and southern regions and was dominated by Echinodermata in terms of species richness and density. The southern region (<24° N) is a subtropical zone with typically warm and clear water, and dominated by Hexacorallia (stony corals). The southern area was less diverse and had lower densities than the central and northern areas. These three communities correspond to known oceanographic discontinuities in the Gulf of California. This implies that future coastal management plans and conservation efforts in the Gulf of California must be regionalized to support their distinct ecological communities.  相似文献
