A damage model was used to take into account the effect on winter wheat yield of the size, duration and timing of Sitobion avenae infestation in summer, and the influence of insecticide applications. It was validated as far as possible using available data, and appeared to be sufficiently accurate to be useful. The model was applied to a total of 32 winter wheat fields over the period 1975 to 1983 in eastern England and the Netherlands, to obtain estimates of yield losses associated with not applying insecticides at the end of ear emergence (G.S. 59), mid-anthesis (G.S. 65) or the end of anthesis (G.S. 69). These estimates of future yield losses were related in multiple regressions to the number of S. avenae per tiller at the time the insecticide was applied, and the rate of population increase over the previous few days. Basing the decision about whether to apply insecticide on forecasts from the multiple regression equations appeared to be slightly more profitable than prophylactic spraying when the chemical cost alone was considered, but substantially more profitable when the application cost and wheeling loss were also taken into account. The strategy minimising losses involved forecasts at all three crop growth stages. It was validated using a further 21 fields studied in 1984 and 1985, and gave better results than the EPIPRE system, which over-estimated the number of fields requiring spraying, and the economic threshold of George & Gair (1979), which under-estimated the number requiring spraying. However, the accuracy of the damage model needs to be checked against measured yield losses in order to establish the success of the multiple regression strategy conclusively.  相似文献

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL., ‘Chablis’) wasgrown under field conditions from sowing until harvest maturity,except for a 12-d period [70–82 days after sowing (DAS)coinciding with anthesis] during which replicated crop areaswere exposed to a range of temperatures within two pairs ofpolyethylene-covered temperature gradient tunnels. At 82 DAS,an increase in mean temperature from 16 to 25 °C duringthis treatment period had no effect on above-ground biomass,but increased ear dry weight from 223 to 327 g m-2and, at 83DAS, reduced root biomass from 141 to 63 g m-2. Mean temperatureover the treatment period had no effect on either above-groundbiomass or grain yield at maturity. However, the number of grainsper ear at maturity declined with increasing maximum temperaturerecorded over the mid-anthesis period (76–79 DAS) and,more significantly, with maximum temperature 1 d after 50% anthesis(78 DAS). Grain yield and harvest index also declined sharplywith maximum temperature at 78 DAS. Grain yield declined by350 g m-2at harvest maturity with a 10 °C increase in maximumtemperature at 78 DAS and was related to a 40% reduction inthe number of grains per ear. Grain yield was also negativelyrelated to thermal time accumulated above a base temperatureof 31 °C (over 8 d of the treatment from 5 d before to 2d after 50% anthesis). Twenty-five field experiments on barley were done at four sites from 1970 to 1975, with an additional site in 1975, comparing five rates of nitrogen application. The crops were sampled at c. 14-day intervals from about the four-leaf stage to maturity to follow changes with time in the dry weights of the constituent plant parts and to measure fertile tiller number, grain number per ear and grain weight. Some data have been selected from this body of information and regression analysis has been used to assess the possible importance of pre- and post-anthesis growth in determining the yield of barley. Ear emergence was taken as an approximate indicator of anthesis. Yield was closely related (r=+0–96) and almost equal to the amount of dry matter accumulated before ear emergence for twenty-one of the experiments, with a regression coefficient of 0–95. In two of the remaining experiments the regression coefficient was greater, 1–14; and smaller in the other two, o-8i. Plant population is also shown to affect the regression coefficient. Despite these anomalies grain yield was more closely related to plant dry weight at ear emergence than to the increase in weight after ear emergence (r =+0–79). The increase in plant dry weight after ear emergence was frequently less than the yield of grain, suggesting that the plant can compensate for inadequate photosynthesis during grain filling. The result of this compensation is a reduction in straw dry weight. This implies that previously assimilated dry matter is transported to the grain, or that respiratory losses from the straw are not replaced by current photosynthesis. These observations suggest that yield may be limited by sink capacity rather than by photosynthesis after ear emergence. The main component of sink capacity, grain number per m2 was closely related to yield (r =+0–95) and is known to be determined at or before anthesis. Grain size was shown to be related to grain number per ear (r= 4- 0–99), suggesting that grain size is also, at least partially, determined at ear emergence. The potato tuber moth (PTM),Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a major pest of processing tomatoes,Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (Solanaceae), in Israel. The larvae penetrate the tomato fruit through the stem end and present a serious threat to crop quality. Foliage and fruit samples were taken in nine commercial tomato fields located in Israel's three main tomato growing areas, two of which are potato growing areas as well. PTM was not found where potatoes were absent. Potato harvest in nearby fields was found to be the most significant factor affecting seasonal trends in PTM population density in tomatoes. All four larval instars were found in foliage on all sampling dates. Significantly higher proportions of first instars were found during the population density increase which followed potato harvest. Damaged fruits did not contain first instar larvae, indicating that PTM never undergoes complete development within tomato fruit. Fruit damage levels at harvest were positively correlated to the peak mean population densities on foliage and the date they were observed. In tomato fields not adjacent to potatoes, infestation was first observed at the edge of the field. Both before and after the potato harvest in nearby fields, population density at the edge of the field was significantly higher than at the center. In tomato fields adjacent to potatoes, no significant differences were found between population densities at the edge and center before the potatoes were harvested. The dark respiration of shoots (measured between March and anthesisin mid-June) and of ears (measured between anthesis and maturityat end of July) of winter wheat crops, grown in 1982 and 1985under different nitrogen application and irrigation conditions,was determined in the field. The respiration rate of 126 averagesof four samples was measured hourly for a 12–14-h darkperiod including the night. Respiration (expressed per unitdry mass) generally declined through the season for both shootsand ears. The average rate of respiration obtained on the samenight was greater for fertilized and irrigated crops, comparedwith unfertilized and droughted crops. The relationship betweenthe measured respiration and photosynthesis, simulated usinga modified version of the model developed by Spitters (1986),was analysed. This revealed that: (a) Shoot respiration was less well correlated with photosynthesisfrom the day preceding measurement than with the average ofthe photosynthesis from the two days preceding measurement. (b) The constants relating shoot respiration to total crop photosynthesisper unit crop mass and ear respiration to total crop photosynthesisper unit ear mass had similar values. This suggests that allgrowth respiration takes place in the ears at the end of theseason. (c) Crop growth respiration consumes about 35% of assimilatebefore anthesis, and that growth respiration of the ear consumesabout 40% of assimilate at the end of the season. (d) No significant effect of treatment on the relationship betweenrespiration and photosynthesis was detected, suggesting thatthe observed effect of treatment on respiration is due entirelyto differences in photosynthesis. The sunn pest, Eurygaster integriceps Puton, is a serious pest of wheat and other cereals in the Firouzabad region of Ardabil Province, Iran. In this study, we examined the spatial distribution of sunn pest eggs and their parasitism by Trissolcus spp., primarily Trissolcus grandis Thomson, during the growing seasons of 2008 and 2009. Ten quadrats of 1 m2 were established in each of the ten experimental fields and sampled every 3 days beginning at Feekes growth stage 6 (beginning of stem elongation) through stage 11 (ripening). The numbers of sunn pest eggs, both parasitized and unparasitized, were tallied in each quadrat on each sampling date. Sunn pest oviposition peaked during the onset of flowering in both years, while parasitism peaked at the completion of anthesis in 2008, and at anthesis complete to early milk stage in 2009. Iwao’s regression provided a better fit to the data than did Taylor’s power law. Both models indicated an aggregated distribution of eggs and parasitism. Temporally, there was a negative overlap between egg density and parasitism from inflorescence emergence until the beginning of anthesis, and positive overlap from anthesis complete until the soft dough stage, such that parasitism ranged from 0% of eggs laid early, to virtually 100% of eggs laid late. Thus, despite good spatial correspondence between egg density and egg parasitism, the time lag between peak bug oviposition and peak parasitism enabled large numbers of early‐laid host eggs to hatch and diminished the potential efficacy of biological control by Trissolcus spp. The implications of these results are discussed in the context of integrated management of sunn pest in wheat fields and the possible benefits of early season augmentation of the parasitoid population.  相似文献

Wheat ears were inoculated with conidia of Fusarium spp. at different growth stages between ear emergence and harvest and moist conditions were maintained for up to 7 days subsequently by mist irrigation. Of the fungi tested (Fusarium culmorum, F. avenaceum, F. tricinctum, F. sporotrichioides and Microdochium nivale), only F. culmorum produced ear blight symptoms and grain samples were found subsequently to contain deoxynivalenol. Most ear infection and deoxynivalenol formation occurred following inoculation at about mid-anthesis. Small amounts of deoxynivalenol were formed and some F. culmorum was isolated even in the absence of ear blight symptoms. An overnight wet period was sufficient to initiate infection and deoxynivalenol formation but both were increased by extending the wet period up to at least 3 days. Recovery of Fusarium spp. from harvested grain was usually possible whether or not symptoms developed. F. culmorum usually persisted and often increased to moderately high levels after storage for 7 wk in a range of moisture conditions.  相似文献

Surveys of 11 watermelon fields throughout production areas of this crop in southern and central regions in Tunisia were conducted in 2007 to determine the aetiology and distribution of watermelon vine decline. Monosporascus cannonballus was isolated from diseased roots in all surveyed fields. All the isolates were identified according to morphological features and confirmed by amplification of a fragment of the ITS region with specific primers. Ascospores of M. cannonballus were recovered from soil in all watermelon fields surveyed and the average population densities ranged from 3.65 to 10.14 ascospores per g of soil. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that only four of the crop and soil factors evaluated had a significant correlation with ascospore density at the end of the growing season: vertisol vs. other soils, disease incidence, percentage of clay and pH. The pH of the soil showed a strong significant negative linear relationship with ascospore density, while the other three factors correlated positively.  相似文献

Anticarsia gemmatalis nucleopolyhedrovirus(AgNPV) was released as a single spray in soybean at two sites in Louisiana, near Crowley and Baton Rouge, after which viral prevalence and population density were monitored for 3--4 years. Each site had a plot with no treatment (control) and two virus-treated plots, one planted with soybean yearly for 3-4 years, and the other planted with soybean for 3-4 years except for rotation to a different crop in year 2. In year 1, the single spray ofAgNPV resulted in viral prevalence rates ranging from 25--100% A. gemmatalis mortality over the entire growing season. By the end of this season, viral accumulation in soil averaged 4.1 ×104 occlusion bodies (OB)/g at Crowley and 7.4× 103 OB/g at Baton Rouge, which had a sandier soil than Crowley. At Crowley, prevalence of AgNPVreached 49% insect mortality in the unrotated plot in year 2, and 31% in the rotated plot and 38% in the unrotated plot in year 3, in spite of moderate to low population densities of A. gemmatalis. At Baton Rouge, AgNPV prevalence decreased to peak prevalence rates of 25% insect mortality in year 2,4% in year 3, and 11% in year 4, even though A. gemmatalis population densities were moderate in years 2 and 3. Viral concentration in soil decreased to 2.7 × 102 OB/g (rotated plot) and1.4 × 104 OB/g (unrotated plot) by the end of year 3 at Crowley and to 10 OB/g (rotated plot) and31 OB/g (unrotated plot) by the end of year 4 at Baton Rouge. In forward stepwise multiple regressions, the concentration of OB in soil was significantly (p = 0.0001) and positively correlated with AgNPV prevalence, but correlations of the latter parameter with host population density and rainfall were not significant (p > 0.05). Prevalence rates of the fungal entomopathogen Nomuraea rileyi were significantly (p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with AgNPV prevalence at Crowley but not in the combined data set. Prevalence of N. rileyi was negatively correlated (p = 0.0001) with precipitation and positively correlated (p = 0.0001) with A.gemmatalis population density. The research demonstrated that AgNPV can be introduced and established for long-term suppression of A.gemmatalis in an ephemeral crop habitat, but certain site-related conditions, perhaps relating to soil, are necessary for its continued success. Samples of developing wheat grains were extracted at weekly intervals from ear emergence until maturity and the growth substances estimated by bioassay. Immature grains contained two cytokinins; one was similar to zeatin and another, with more cytokinin activity, had different properties. Ovules contained only small amounts of growth substances but at the end of anthesis the grains had a maximum content of cytokinin. The gibberellin content increased until 3 wk after anthesis then decreased; their auxin content increased until 4 wk after anthesis but decreased as the grains ripened and lost fresh weight. The husks contained smaller amounts of growth substances than the grains they surrounded. Exudates from young stems contained cytokinins and these may originate in the roots and move to the ears through the stems. The auxin in the grains was identified as indole-3yl-acetic acid and may be derived from the phenols present reacting with tryptophan.  相似文献

To study the importance for final grain size in wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) of assimilate supply and the storage capacity of the grain, two field experiments were done. In 1976 nitrogen was applied in the range from none to 180 kg ha-1, part of the crop was thinned, and the top halves of some ears of the short variety Hobbit and of the tall variety Maris Huntsman were removed soon after anthesis. In 1977 ears of Maris Huntsman were halved 5 days after anthesis or at 30 days after anthesis when grain volume was maximum. Thinning the crop from 360 to 180 ear-bearing shoots m-2 30 days before anthesis increased the number of grains per ear, except in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser, but did not increase grain size, grain dry weight per ear or total dry weight per culm. Removing the upper half of ears of Hobbit 5 days after anthesis increased dry weight per grain, but when this treatment was applied to Maris Huntsman either 5 days after anthesis in 1976 and 1977, or when grain volume was maximal in 1977, the grains failed to increase in dry weight. Non-grain dry weight of both varieties was increased by halving the ear. In both varieties the maximum volume of grains in halved ears was larger than in intact ears. Grain dry weight increased relatively less than volume after halving the ear of Hobbit, and the decrease in volume up to maturity was greater in halved than intact ears of both varieties. The larger grain volume in halved ears of Maris Huntsman in 1977 was associated with more endosperm cells.  相似文献

Emergence and seasonal regulation of the dragonfly Onychogomphus costae Selys, 1885, were surveyed thoroughly during two consecutive years from two nearby stretches upstream the Seybouse River, northeastern Algeria. The emergence season started in mid-May and lasted 68 and 58 days showing a peak in late May and early June in 2011 and 2012, respectively. During the two years 2011 and 2012, 50% of annual emergence occurred after 25 and 22 days, respectively. Sex ratio was slightly but not significantly male biased. Female exuviae were recorded at higher height than males. Height of the exuviae fixation was positively correlated to support height and head width. Percentage mortality at emergence was mainly due to deformity and predation counting from 7.9% to 9.15% of the total emergent population. The species seasonal regulation is inferred and discussed based on the emergence temporal pattern and larval development.  相似文献

I measured competitive responses of experimentally-established populations of the perennial grass, Andropogon gerardi, across a complex gradient of standing crop and species composition in the successional grasslands of southwest Michigan. The goal was to assess whether long-term (three year) population-level responses of Andropogon to competition matched the inferences made from a previous phytometer study that examined transplant responses to competition across this same gradient over a single growing season.Replicate experimental populations of Andropogon were established at seven grassland sites by sowing seed into 0.5×0.5 m plots that had been denuded of all vegetation. During the first year of the study, all Andropogon populations were maintained as monocultures by hand weeding. At the end of the first growing season, half of the monocultures were selected for continued weeding and half were left open to invasion by competitors for three years. Invasion of the unweeded populations by neighboring plants varied strongly among sites and was positively correlated with standing crop. Increased susceptibility to invasion and competition resulted in the extinction of the unweeded Andropogon populations at the two most productive sites, supporting the hypothesis that Andropogon is restricted by competition to low productivity sites in these grasslands. The finding that the intensity of competition was positively correlated with standing crop is consistent with the previous transplant study, suggesting that short-term experimental assays of competition on the growth of individual transplants may have predictive value for longer-term outcomes of competition at the population level.  相似文献

Patterns of seedling recruitment may have persistent effects on population and community processes. Assuming seed availability is not limiting, the environmental sieve (i.e., the suite of factors influencing seed germination and seedling emergence and survival) determines how many seedlings establish and, most importantly, where they do so. In this study, we identify the spatial structure of some resources and abiotic conditions known to be significant for tree seedling emergence and survival and determine how these environmental factors influence the establishment of Fagus grandifolia, Acer saccharum, Fraxinus americana, and Ostrya virginiana in a deciduous forest of southern Québec (Canada). We expect an increase from Fagus, through Acer and Fraxinus, to Ostrya in the control of environmental variables on seedling emergence and survival, because of differences in the seed size of these species. Density of newly-emerged seedlings of all four species showed positive spatial autocorrelation at distances of up to ca. 10 m. Environmental variables were also structured at the same spatial scale, except for soil moisture. Acer seedling emergence pattern was positively correlated to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and the pattern of Fraxinus to soil N and moisture. Seedling survival was not spatially autocorrelated for any of the four species, although it was positively density-dependent in Acer and Fagus. In only Ostrya was seedling survival correlated (positively) to one of the environmental variables studied, i.e., PPFD. Overall, environmental variables were spatially less heterogeneous than seedling emergence and survival. Either seed availability was not saturating or factors not considered here, such as competition and predation (the intensity of which often varies with resources and/or abiotic conditions), modified the influence that the physical environment had on patterns of seedling establishment. Our prediction of a greater environmental control on seedling emergence and survival in small-seed species was not totally confirmed.  相似文献

A study was carried out into the relationship between sowing date, canopy development and yield of four barley genotypes sown in autumn and spring. Yield was considered as the product of PAR absorbed by the crop canopy up till anthesis, the dry matter: radiation quotient, the ratio of grains m2at maturity to the weight of the crop at anthesis and the mean grain weight. Equations were derived to predict the time course of the proportion of PAR absorbed in relation to date of sowing using thermal time as predictor. In crops that were not short of water and were fully vernalised, genotypic differences were detected in plant population density, date of anthesis, and the four yield components identified above. All attributes except plant population density were affected by shortage of water but genotypes differed in their response.  相似文献

The uptake of nitrogen and its distribution between shoots and between organs within shoots in wheat (Triticum aestivum) was studied from the start of stem elongation to 28 days after anthesis in a glasshouse experiment with eight nitrogen levels between 0·1 and 12·8 mequiv./litre. There was no net uptake of nitrogen in plants supplied with 0·8 mequiv./litre or less; with more nitrogen the absorption increased linearly. Twenty to 44% of the total plant nitrogen was absorbed after anthesis, this fraction increasing with nutrient supply. The nitrogen allotted to the main shoot decreased until the onset of anthesis and increased thereafter at the expense of the tillers, except with 12·8 mequiv./litre, where nitrogen percentage in the main shoot decreased also after anthesis. Raising nitrogen supply increased the proportion of plant nitrogen recovered in the tillers. Nitrogen accumulated in the ear after emergence and by the 28th day after anthesis it contained between 52% and 73% of the total plant nitrogen. The ear of the main shoot had a higher proportion of shoot nitrogen than that of the tillers. The fraction of ear nitrogen supplied by retranslocation decreased from almost 100% with 0·8 mequiv. N/litre or less to nil with 12·8 mequiv./litre. Increasing nitrogen application decreased the fraction of total nitrogen allocated to the ear.  相似文献

Multiyear and multilocation studies were conducted to investigate the within‐ and the between‐year spatial dynamics of corn rootworms Diabrotica spp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), adults and their spatial associations with environmental factors in cornfields. Grid‐based spatial sampling was conducted by trapping adults emerging from the soil (i.e., ‘emergence‐trap counts’) and by counting the number of adults in the ear zone of corn plant (i.e., ‘ear‐zone count’). Spatial analysis with distance indices (SADIE) was used to determine spatial distribution patterns and to investigate spatial associations. Ear‐zone counts and emergence‐trap counts were spatially dynamic within a year and more frequently aggregated in the middle of growing seasons and random early and late in the season. However, during the peak population periods, spatial distribution of ear‐zone counts and emergence‐trap counts were significantly consistent between years, indicating predictability of future spatial distributions. Spatial distribution of emergence‐trap counts and ear‐zone counts were positively associated with soil moisture and presence of corn plants with silks, respectively. This study demonstrated that within‐year spatial distribution patterns were dynamic and that there was between‐year spatial consistency of corn rootworm adult distributions. Such information can be used to improve preventative management of corn rootworms.  相似文献

Sitobion avenae was introduced into areas within a field of winter wheat in Norfolk in mid-May 1985, when the indigenous population was negligible. Aphid numbers in these areas increased for the first 3 wk and declined for the next 4. A second S. avenue introduction into the same areas and into previously uninfested areas was carried out 5 wk after the first introduction, when the crop was at ear emergence complete (G.S. 59). This increased aphid numbers in the previously uninfested areas, but numbers in the previously infested areas continued to decline to below the level in control areas during the subsequent 2 wk. Populations in all areas then increased rapidly to a maximum, followed by a rapid final decline. Monitoring of the aphid and natural enemy populations, and caging aphids onto the crop, revealed that the principal cause of the population decline around G.S. 59 was predation by syrphids. The relevance of these findings to the problem of forecasting S. avenae outbreaks is discussed, and a general explanation for cereal aphid outbreaks is put forward.  相似文献

In seed crops of Lolium perenne, yield may be reduced by competition for a limited assimilate supply from sinks other than the ear. This study was undertaken to evaluate the priorities for allocation of assimilate within the crop from all photosynthetic sites on the main reproductive tiller after anthesis. Ear, stem and leaves were fed with 14CO2 on two occasions; the assimilatory efficiency of these sources and the magnitude and pattern of 14C-assimilate export from each was determined. The growth of each part of the main tiller and subtending tillers was also measured. Stem elongation apparently dominated the current assimilate resource and the ear did not become a net importer of assimilate until this process had ceased. Assimilate allocation to the tillers was high throughout. The nature of any competition between these sinks is discussed. When crop growth was contrasted with that in a previous year, environmental factors were implicated as determinants of priority for assimilate allocation to each sink. Sources of carbon for seed filling are also discussed as is the relevance of these findings to seed crop management.  相似文献

Effects of the environment on shoot survival were studied inwinter wheat cv. Avalon grown in microplots at a density of247 plants m–2. The incident radiation and mean temperaturewere altered during one of three periods of between 14 and 29d duration, the first (P1) starting at the end of tiller productionand the last (P3) finishing near the end of the tiller deathphase, about three weeks before anthesis. Plants were giventemperature and radiation treatments in growth rooms in twoexperiments and extra light outdoors in a third experiment:they were at other times grown outdoors. Increasing radiation by between 60 and 100 per cent during P1had negligible effects on shoot number; during P2 it alwaysdelayed tiller death but increased final ear number in onlyone experiment; during P3 it consistently increased ear numberby up to 100 m–2. Increased radiation always increasedcrop dry weight immediately after treatment but only sometimesdid this increase persist to maturity. Grain dry weight wasincreased by treatment during P3 of one experiment. Increasingthe temperature by 4 C decreased shoot number, usually onlytemporarily, by hastening death of some tillers. Warmer temperaturesdecreased crop growth after, but not during, treatment and decreasedgrain dry weight. Radiation and temperature rarely interacted. Variation in grain yield within and between experiments relatedwell to variation in number of grains m–2, which in turnrelated to variation in ear dry weight at anthesis.
