The substrate preferences, growth rates and foraging efficiency of two small benthic fish species, juvenile burbot, Lota lota, and stone loach, Barbatula barbatula, were compared in combined outdoor mesocosm and indoor laboratory experiments. Both species preferred the same stony substrate when alone, but significant differences in habitat selection were found between the two species under food deprivation and competition conditions. In burbot, preference for the stony habitat was reinforced under food-deprivation conditions and became even stronger when a potential competitor, the stone loach, was present. In contrast, stone loach switched to the gravel substrate when either starving or in the presence of a heterospecific competitor. Growth rates and foraging efficiency of burbot were significantly highest in the stony substrate and decreased with finer substrates. In stone loach, neither growth rates nor foraging efficiency were significantly different among the different substrates. The results provide an example of habitat partitioning by means of different competition styles, with a stenoecious, dominant style of the burbot and an euryoecious, evasive style of stone loach allowing coexistence of two sympatric fish species by graded interactions at an individual level in the littoral zone of a large lake. 相似文献

Little is known about the life-history traits exhibited by burbot (Lota lota) throughout their circumpolar range. Monitoring burbot movements between lentic and lotic habits and collection of demographic data (length, age, sex, and maturity) were used to answer the following questions in the Torrey Creek drainage of west-central Wyoming, USA: (a) is there plasticity in the life-history traits of the burbot population, (b) do Trail Lake origin and Torrey Creek origin burbot interchange during the spawning period, and (c) is there a difference in growth and age at sexual maturity between burbot captured in Trail Lake and Torrey Creek? Results indicated that burbot in Trail Lake and Torrey Creek exhibit plasticity in their life history traits. Directional movement of PIT-tagged burbot in Trail Lake and Torrey Creek was monitored nearly continuously by tandem stream-width antennas. Thirty-five percent of lentic-origin burbot migrated upstream into Torrey Creek, and 11% of lotic-origin burbot migrated downstream of the antennas near the Torrey Creek inlet to Trail Lake. Migratory activity of burbot was highest during the late winter and early spring at a time that coincided with spawning. Additionally, Torrey Creek-origin burbot were smaller and younger than Trail Lake-origin burbot. In addition to documenting migration, the sampling of small, sexually mature burbot in Torrey Creek suggests that stream-resident burbot reach maturity earlier than adfluvial and lacustrine burbot in Trail Lake. Furthermore, high catch rates of age-0 burbot indicate that Torrey Creek upstream from Trail Lake provides nursery habitat to the burbot population. Life history trait plasticity and spawning and nursery habitats documented in this study should be considered when selecting conservation actions for this unique burbot population. 相似文献

Summary The locomotor activity of the Burbot (Lota lota L.) performs a phase-shift of 180 ° towards the Zeitgeber (natural light-dark-cycle) twice a year at high northern latitudes (Messaure, Swedish-Lapland, 66 ° 42 N, 20 ° 25 E). The duration of activity in 24 hours never exceeds 11 hours. Maximum values are achieved just before the phase-shift in September/October and in February respectively. It is suggested that this fish species, frequently spread in North-European waters, has a maximum limit in its daily activity time (10 to 11 hours) controlled by phase-shift when the length of day (during day-activity) or night (during night-activity) becomes too long. A rearing experiment was conducted to test whether temperature protocols that differed from a simulation of natural conditions might induce maturation after isothermal grow‐out in burbot Lota lota. Lota lota were acclimated to two different temperature regimes: low temperature (LT), close to natural temperature at 4·0° C and elevated, high temperature (HT) at 8·5° C over 40 and 27 days respectively, with all fish then wintered for 47 days. Every second fish was treated with a gonadotropin‐releasing hormone analogue. Maturational competence of oocytes was assessed with a germinal vesicle breakdown assay using a novel staining strategy. In both treatments, puberty and maturational progress occurred, characterised by an elevated gonado‐somatic index and advanced gonadal stages (histological analysis). Progress of gonadal maturation was reflected by elevated plasma concentrations of testosterone and 11‐ketosterone in males and 17β‐oestradiol in females. Ovulation was not observed. Sperm could be activated equally across treatments. In general, LT was more effective than HT treatment, indicated by advanced gonadal stages, higher numbers of oocytes undergoing germinal vesicle breakdown in vitro and elevated sex steroid levels. Hormone treatment could improve effectiveness at HT. In conclusion, less drastic temperature regimes as previously reported in combination with hormone treatments seem sufficient to induce maturation in L. lota after isothermal grow‐out. 相似文献

The present study investigated the effect of various temperature regimes on embryonic and yolk-sac larval development of the burbot Lota lota. At constant temperature regimes a high percentage of ready-to-hatch embryos, hatched larvae and normally shaped larvae was observed at the lowest temperature (2° C), which significantly decreased with increasing temperatures (4 and 6° C). No larvae hatched at 9° C. The stream temperature regime had no effect on the percentage of ready-to-hatch embryos, but significantly decreased the percentage of hatched larvae and of normally shaped larvae. The lake temperature regime did not affect the viability variables. Also an abrupt temperature increase from 2 to 4° C after 8 days and from 2 to 9° C after 48 days had no effect on the evaluated viability variables. For yolk-sac larvae no temperature related mortalities or abnormalities were observed between 2 and 9° C. 相似文献

Climatic oscillations during the Pleistocene epoch had a dramatic impact on the distribution of biota in the northern hemisphere. In order to trace glacial refugia and postglacial colonization routes on a global scale, we studied mitochondrial DNA sequence variation in a freshwater fish (burbot, Lota lota; Teleostei, Gadidae) with a circumpolar distribution. The subdivision of burbot in the subspecies Lota lota lota (Eurasia and Alaska) and Lota lota maculosa (North America, south of the Great Slave Lake) was reflected in two distinct mitochondrial lineages (average genetic distance is 2.08%). The lota form was characterized by 30 closely related haplotypes and a large part of its range (from Central Europe to Beringia) was characterized by two widespread ancestral haplotypes, implying that transcontinental exchange/migration was possible for cold-adapted freshwater taxa in recent evolutionary time. However, the derived mitochondrial variants observed in peripheral populations point to a recent separation from the core group and postglacial recolonization from distinct refugia. Beringia served as refuge from where L. l. lota dispersed southward into North America after the last glacial maximum. Genetic variation in the maculosa form consisted of three mitochondrial clades, which were linked to at least three southern refugia in North America. Two mitochondrial clades east of the Continental Divide (Mississippian and Missourian clades) had a distinct geographical distribution in the southern refuge zones but intergraded in the previously glaciated area. The presence of symbiotic microflora associated with the digestive-transport surfaces of the burbot intestine and of Eubothrium rugosum (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea) parasitizing in it has been shown. The bacteria absorb amino acids from the cultivation medium or release proteolytic enzymes into the medium, depending on its composition. The studied microorganisms act either as competitors of the parasite and host for nutritive substrates or as suppliers of proteolytic enzymes that can be subsequently used by the parasite and host in the digestive processes. The amino acid absorption and release of proteolytic enzymes by the bacteria do not depend on the medium pH. The microorganisms that are more closely associated with the studied surfaces seem to make a greater contribution to digestive processes both of the parasite and of the host, as bacteria present in the intestinal contents are removed faster from the digestive tract. 相似文献

This article is based on a study of traditional lifestyle practices in the Sandy Lake First Nation community in northwestern Ontario, considering some of the benefits and risks of reintroducing off-the-land food sources, specifically as they relate to the burbot (Lota lota L.). This article concentrates, therefore, on four avenues of exploration: (1) the “nutrition transition” in the First Nations population, (2) the meaning of a traditional diet in the Sandy Lake First Nation, (3) a nutritional value analysis of the burbot to determine its energy content and medicinal properties, and (4) the plausibility of reintroducing off-the-land food sources into the Sandy Lake First Nation community. We argue that though there may be health advantages to the reintroduction of off-the land food sources into First Nations contemporary diets, these benefits will be realized only if practiced according to historical dietary traditions drawing from critical parts of animal tissues to maximize nutrient intake. 相似文献

The burbot, Lota lota, is a widely distributed gadid of the northern circumpolar regions of North America and Eurasia. Despite its near ubiquity over much of its range, relatively little is known about its biology during the first year of life.Burbot sac-fry of 3 mm total length, hatched under the ice in early May in Shebandowan Lake. Their first foods following atrophy of the yolk-sac were copepods and cladocerans which they captured pelagically. At first the fry swam in small schools, high in the water column of the near-shore littoral, and fed during the daytime. Upon reaching 30 mm in total length, the burbot fingerlings became solitary and benthic, and fed primarily at night, almost exclusively on the amphipod, Hyalella azteca. Amphipods constituted about 75 per cent by number of all the food consumed by burbot fingerlings in their first year of life. Growth was rapid from May to the end of July, tapered off during August to October, and effectively stopped by November at freeze-up. The principal habitat of burbot fingerlings during the benthic stages of their life was the near-shore littoral, in depths ranging from 0.5 m to 4.0 m. There, they were sheltered by boulder shoals, sunken trees or other debris, or beds of quillworts (Isoetes sp.). The principal ichthyofauna that cohabited with the burbot included the sculpin (Cottus cognatus), the smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui), two etheostomatines (Etheostoma nigrum) and (E. exile) and the yellow perch (Perca flavescens). 通过测定摄食后原尾蜥虎成体的耗氧量变化,研究摄食特殊热动力作用(SDA).蜥虎分为摄食黄粉虫幼虫实验组和禁食对照组,两组动物平均体重无显著差异.测定耗氧量前,将所有动物在30℃恒温室内禁食3天.用容积为300 ml的封闭式呼吸室测定两组蜥虎在30℃条件下连续3天的耗氧量,测定间隔时间为4~12 h.禁食组动物实验期间的耗氧量无显著的时间变异,实验组动物耗氧量的时间变异显著,这些结果表明摄食影响原尾蜥虎的代谢率.实验组动物摄食4 h后耗氧量已显著大于禁食组,摄食40 h后两组动物的耗氧量无显著差异.原尾蜥虎达到SDA峰值的平均时间约为20.0 h,SDA峰值耗氧量是禁食对照组动物耗氧量的1.5倍.原尾蜥虎单次摄食实验中的SDA具有进食后耗氧量迅速增加、达到峰值后下降至摄食前水平的典型模式. 相似文献

The burbot, Lota lota, is the only freshwater species of the codfish family and has a Holarctic distribution. Pleistocene glaciations caused significant geographical differentiation in the past, but its life history characterized by winter spawning migrations over large distances is likely to homogenize populations by contemporary gene flow. We investigated the population genetic structure of 541 burbots from Lake Constance and adjacent Rhine and Danube tributaries in Europe using the entire mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and 11 microsatellites. Microsatellites revealed considerable population divergence (F(ST) = 0.26) and evidenced recent bottlenecks in two Central European rivers. In accordance to previous evidence two main phylogeographic lineages (Atlantic and Danubian) were found co-occurring at similar frequencies in Lake Constance, where they currently undergo random mating as indicated by microsatellites. The Danubian lineage contributed only a small proportion to the lake's mtDNA diversity, and probably expanded within the lake shortly after its formation approximately 10,000-15,000 BP. The larger Atlantic haplotype diversity suggested a population expansion older than the lake itself. Levels of admixture at microsatellite loci were less obvious due to their high variability, and coalescence methods were used to estimate past admixture proportions. Our results reinforce a model of a two-step colonization of Europe by burbot from an ancestral Danubian refuge, and confirm the persistence of a secondary Atlantic refuge, as proposed to exist for other freshwater fish. We conclude that the present-day burbot population in Lake Constance bears the genetic signature of both contemporary gene flow and historical separation events. 相似文献

The stomach contents were examined in 373 walleye pollack larvae of different sizes. The diet of pollack larvae included more than 20 plankters of different sizes. Phytoplankton was the major food source of 4- to 6-mm-long larvae. The proportion of phytoplankton in the larval diet decreased as the larvae grew, and the late larval stages shifted entirely to a diet of zooplankton. As the larvae increased in size, the spectrum of food organisms changed from smaller to larger sizes. In the larvae 4 to 31 mm long, the length of prey varied from 0.1 (Coscinodiscus) to 6.0 mm (Neocalanus plumchrus). The average daily repleteness of pollack larvae varied from 32 to 210. The minimum repleteness was registered in 4- to 6-mm-long larvae with mixed feeding (endogenous and exogenous); in 30- to 35-mm-long fish the repleteness was the greatest. The daily food rations calculated for the most abundant size groups of larvae ranged from 4.3 to 6.6% of their body weight. 相似文献

Light is the main environmental time cue which synchronizes daily rhythms and the molecular clock of vertebrates. Indeed, alterations in photoperiod have profound physiological effects in fish (e.g. reproduction and early development). In order to identify the changes in clock genes expression in gilthead seabream larvae during ontogeny, three different photoperiods were tested: a regular 12L:12D cycle (LD), a continuous light 24L:0D (LL) and a two-phases photoperiod (LL?+?LD) in which the photoperiod changed from LL to LD on day 15 after hatching (dph). Larvae were sampled on 10, 18, 30 and 60 days post-hatch (dph) during a 24?h cycle. In addition to the expression of clock genes (clock, bmal1, cry1 and per3), food intake was measured. Under LD photoperiod, larvae feed intake and clock genes expression showed a rhythmic pattern with a strong light synchronization, with the acrophases occurring at the same hour in all tested ages. Under LL photoperiod, the larvae also showed a rhythmic pattern but the acrophases occurred at different times depending on the age, although at the end of the experiment (60 dph) clock genes expression and feed intake rhythms were similar to those larvae exposed to LD photoperiod. Moreover, the expression levels of bmal1 and cry1 were much lower than in LD photoperiod. Under the LL?+?LD photoperiod, the 10 dph larvae showed the same patterns as LL treatment while 18 and 30 dph larvae showed the same patterns as LD treatment. These results revealed the presence of internal factors driving rhythmic physiological responses during larvae development under constant environmental conditions. The LL?+?LD treatment demonstrates the plasticity of the clock genes expression and the strong effect of light as synchronizer in developing fish larvae. 相似文献

Feeding and growth responses of roach from three size classes to alarm substance (Schreckstoff) were quantified in laboratory experiments. Larger fish (60.0–80.0 mm in length) reacted stronger to treatment than two smaller sized groups (35.0–45.0 and 46.0–55.0 mm) lowering feeding rate by 80 and 40 and 50%, respectively. The reduction in feeding rate of larger fish caused decrease in growth rate in length and weight, while the lowered consumption of smaller fish caused only reduction in growth rate in weight. Condition factor of exposed to alarm substance small sized roach was lower than that of the control individuals and roach from other two size classes, both, treated and untreated. The difference in growth response to a danger of predation has its roots probably in different metabolism and growth rates of small and large fish. Small fish have higher metabolic rate and less lipid reserves than larger ones, therefore they are probably forced to feed to be able to grow. Also, small sized roach is more vulnerable to predation than large sized fish, thus growing fast seem to be crucial for survival in a risky environment. Study shows that small roach trade off their safety against food, feeding in risky environment to sustain fast growth. This ability of fast outgrowing of a dangerous, vulnerable to predators, size increases survival of juveniles in dangerous environment. 相似文献
