Abstract Pheromone production in virgin females of Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) peaked between the fourth and seventh hours of scotophase on the second, third, fourth and fifth days following eclosion. The highest peak (186 ng) occurred on day 3 after eclosion. Z-11-Hexadecenal comprised the highest proportion of seven components in the pheromone glands. Disproportionately higher amounts of hexadecanal and Z-11-hexadecenol occurred during photo-phase and other periods when low quantities of total pheromone were recorded.
Mating suppressed pheromone production which remained low until 48 h after mating. Coupling females with males mated three times previously or with 6-day-old males was less effective in causing a drop in pheromone content which peaked again 24 h after mating. This suggests the transfer of a male factor, a pheromonostatic factor, that suppresses pheromone production in mated females and that the factor from older and previously mated males is less effective.  相似文献

In previous studies we have presented evidence for the role of peptides, isolated from heads of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, in stimulating fluid secretion by isolated Malpighian tubules. In the present study we conducted experiments to investigate whether these peptides are involved in hormone-mediated diuresis after a blood meal. In vivo experiments showed that the head was required to maintain diuresis after the blood meal. Whereas feeding on blood triggered a prompt diuresis in the intact mosquito, subsequent decapitation caused a gradual, not an abrupt, decline in urine excretion rate. Hemolymph collected from mosquitoes fed blood significantly stimulated fluid secretion in vitro by isolated Malpighian tubules, whereas hemolymph from unfed or blood-fed decapitated mosquitoes did not. These results indicate that a diuretic factor was released into the hemolymph after a blood meal. This factor was not present in the hemolymph of decapitated females. We identified the head as a source of diuretic factors. Peptides isolated from a head extract by high-performance liquid chromatography, when injected into the hemocoel of blood-fed decapitated mosquitoes, triggered diuresis in vivo and also stimulated fluid secretion in isolated Malpighian tubules. These studies support the hypothesis that the head is a storage site for diuretic peptides that may be released after a blood meal to control diuresis.  相似文献

Yolk deposition begins in the terminal oocytes of virgins of Triatoma protracta a few days after adult eclosion, and while a few eggs may be matured before vitellogenesis ceases, none are laid. Mating at day four stimulates egg maturation and oviposition in fed and unfed females, egg-laying beginning as early as nine days after eclosion. If mating is delayed until day 16, by which time vitellogenesis normally has ceased, stored eggs are laid within two to four days and yolk deposition is resumed. Removal of the brain prevents oviposition, as does the severance of the ventral nerve cord. Thus, an intact central nervous system is required for egg-laying. Also, since neither operation inhibits egg maturation or ovulation, it appears that the latter reproductive responses to mating are independent of oviposition.  相似文献

Abstract The early part of the post‐eclosion, pre‐mating period were examined under field conditions for Ostrinia nubilalis. Post‐eclosion behavior of 25 and 21 females during the first and second flight periods were observed until they left their natal site. Summer generation larvae were reared under field conditions and the timing of adult eclosion was observed. Eclosion occurred at two times during the day, peaking before dawn and before dusk; 46% of females and 56% of males eclosed during the morning period and the rest eclosed during the evening period. After eclosion, females spent 30–60 min expanding their wings. Their typical behavior was to remain calmly on their natal site. None of the females exhibited calling behavior before leaving. All females left their natal sites sometime before dawn. The probability of leaving increased with time. Leaving rates were not significantly different between females of the first and second flight. These field observations indicate that females have several possibilities for pre‐mating movement, which might allow females to move out from their natal field before mating. In addition, we also discuss the influence of pre‐mating movements in relation to the rate of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) resistance evolution.  相似文献

Synganglia, salivary gland, midgut, ovary, fat body and muscle alone and in combination from the ixodid tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), or the argasid tick, Ornithodoros parkeri Cooley, were incubated in vitro in separate experiments with L-[methyl-(3)H]methionine and farnesoic acid or with [1-(14)C]acetate. Life stages examined in D. variabilis were 3 and 72 h old (after ecdysis) unfed nymphs, partially fed nymphs (18 and 72 h after attachment to the host), fully engorged nymphs (2 d after detachment from host), 3 and 72 h old (after eclosion) unfed females, partially fed unmated females (12-168 h after attachment to host) and mated replete females (2 d after detachment from the host). Those from O. parkeri were third and fourth stadium nymphs and female O. parkeri, 1-2 d after detachment. Corpora allata from Diploptera punctata, Periplaneta americana and Gromphadorina portentosa were used as positive controls in these experiments. No farnesol, methyl farnesoate, JH I, JH II, JH III, or JHIII bisepoxide was detected by radio HPLC from any tick analysis while JH III, methyl farnesoate, and farnesol were detected in the positive controls. To examine further for the presence of a tick, insect-juvenilizing agent, Galleria pupal-cuticle bioassays were conducted on lipid extracts from 10 and 15 d old eggs, unfed larvae (1-5 d after ecdysis), unfed nymphs (1-7 d after ecdysis), and partially fed, unmated female adults (completed slow feeding phase) of D. variabilis. Whole body extracts of fourth stadium D. punctata and JH III standard were used as positive controls. No juvenilizing activity in any of the tick extracts could be detected. Electron impact, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of hemolymph extracts from fed, virgin (forcibly detached 7 d after attachment) and mated, replete (allowed to drop naturally) D. variabilis and fully engorged (1-2 d after detachment) O. parkeri females also failed to identify the common insect juvenile hormones. The same procedures were successful in the identification of JH III in hemolymph of fourth stadium D. punctata. Last stadium nymphal (female) O. parkeri implanted with synganglia from second nymphal instars underwent normal eclosion to the adult. The above studies in toto suggest that D. variabilis and O. parkeri do not have the ability to make the common insect juvenile hormones, and these juvenile hormones do not regulate tick metamorphosis or reproduction as hypothesized in the literature.  相似文献

通过室内饲养与野外观察榆木蠹蛾Holcocerus vicarius (Walker)成虫的羽化、交尾、产卵行为,触角电位反应测定处女雌蛾性信息素产生与释放节律,旨在为榆木蠹蛾性信息素的鉴定和合成奠定基础。结果表明:榆木蠹蛾羽化行为全天可见,主要集中在15:00-19:00。成虫羽化当日即可交尾,21:30-0:30进行婚飞和交尾,交尾高峰出现在晚23:00左右,光期未见交尾。随着日龄的增加,召唤时间前移并且延长,2~3日龄处女雌蛾召唤时间早于1日龄雌蛾,交尾时间较短;雌蛾在羽化1 d后达到性成熟,2日龄雌蛾交尾百分率最高,达41.8%。雌蛾将产卵器伸出寻找缝隙处产卵,分多处产卵,雌虫最高产卵量达720粒,最低产卵量为105粒,卵期为12~22 d不等,孵化率为72%~88%。羽化当晚的雌蛾体内性信息素含量较低,第2天最高,以后逐日下降;2日龄榆木蠹蛾处女雌蛾性信息素的产生量从晚17:00起逐渐增加, 21:30-22:00时最高, 22:00后逐渐减小。雄蛾触角电位反应在22:30最强。21:30-23:00是雌蛾产生和释放性信息素的高峰期。榆木蠹蛾的羽化、交尾存在一定的时辰节律,通过处女雌蛾的野外诱集试验证实了性信息素释放与交配行为在时辰节律上的一致性。  相似文献

Changes in size and number of cytoplasmic lipid droplets were quantified in the pheromone gland (PG) of Bombyx mori before and after adult eclosion. Two days before eclosion, size and number of droplets are small (diameter is 2-7 microm) and few. The formation and significant proliferation of larger droplets (5-12 microm) take place between 2 days and 1 day before eclosion. From the day of emergence until day 3 a fluctuation in size and number of lipid droplets during the photophase (4h intervals) is observed. The changes are more characteristic and dramatic on the day of emergence and first day, while attenuation of these changes can be observed from the second day and seems to disappear by day 4. Bombykol content, at each respective time, is in good correlation with the observed fluctuation in lipid droplet parameters. Highest bombykol production daily is observed towards the early evening, when lipid droplets are the smallest (2-4 microm) and most numerous. By day 4, however, this regularity also ceases. In 24h old mated females PG cell structure is quite similar to newly emerged ones. In glands of 72 h old decapitated females the formation of 'extra' large lipid droplets is remarkable. In vivo pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN) treatment, however, induced the formation of many small droplets, although numerous larger ones also remained. The morphological changes in lipid droplets and cellular dynamics associated with the external signal of PBAN in the PG suggest a storage-pool function of the lipid droplets.  相似文献

The hourly and daily variation of calling behavior and sex pheromone production by the female black cutworm moth, Agrotis ypsilon (Rottemberg), were investigated. Both calling behavior and titers of five sex pheromone components showed distinct diel rhythms, and peak periods of calling and pheromone titer were synchronous. Females began to call on the first night after eclosion and called mainly during the second half of the scotophase. The percentage of females calling increased in 1 to 3-d-old females and decreased in 3 to 7-d-old females. Females advanced their calling time with increasing age (1 to 7 d). GC-MS analysis of hexane extracts of pheromone glands revealed that the titers of the five sex pheromone components were very low on the first night after eclosion, but increased sharply and peaked on the third night. Titers decreased greatly with increasing age (3 to 7 d), but from the onset of the scotophase to 4.5 h into scotophase, titers remained invariate. However, from 4.5 to 7 h, pheromone titers, especially that of the primary component Z7-12:Ac, increased sharply and peaked. After the peak, the titers decreased greatly at 8 h, and thereafter decreased gradually to the level before 4.5 h. The quantity of each component almost reached zero after lights-on.  相似文献

Abstract The potato psyllid, Bactericera (= Paratrioza) cockerelli (?ulc) (Hemiptera: Triozidae), is a major pest of potato. Studies were conducted to determine the age at which both males and females reach reproductive maturity and the effect of age and time of day on sex attraction. Adult B. cockerelli reach reproductive maturity within 48 h post‐eclosion, with females being mature on the day of eclosion and males at 1 day post‐eclosion. Oviposition generally began 2 days after mating but was delayed when females mated within 2 days post‐eclosion. In laboratory olfactometer assays, the age of females used as odor sources and the age of males assayed to these odors did not affect sex attraction, with both younger (1–4‐day‐old) and older (8–10‐day‐old) males being attracted to females, regardless of female age (1–4‐day‐old or 8–10‐day‐old). Males assayed to live females at different times during the photophase (between 8:00 and 20:00 hours) were attracted to females between 11:00 and 17:00 hours, showing a temporal periodicity in sex attraction with B. cockerelli at least during the photophase.  相似文献

Adults of Tribolium confusum secrete two pheromones. The first, produced by the male, is attractive to both sexes and the second, produced by the female, is attractive to the male only. Pheromone production and perception was studied in relation to habituation, beetle age, time of day and previous mating. A living source of each pheromone habituates the responding beetles, the male pheromone habituating more strongly; female pheromone habituates only in the absence of the male pheromone. Habituation to one pheromone was always accompanied by an enhanced response to the other.Five days after emergence, production of male pheromone reaches a peak that is maintained. Production of female pheromone peaks after 3 days. Both sexes are responsive to male pheromone immediately upon eclosion, males reaching maximum response at 14 days, females at 8 days. Males are also responsive to female pheromone upon eclosion reaching maximum response at 8 days; female response to female pheromone is imperceptible. Males but not females display a 24 hr rhythm in pheromone production. Mated beetles did not differ significantly from unmated beetles in their ability to perceive pheromones. Alteration in male pheromone production after mating was detected by females but not males; this pheromone may, therefore, act as both a sex and aggregation pheromone.  相似文献

As in many Lepidoptera, Plutella xylostella adults do not feed on protein and females must use accumulated reserves to supply vitellogenin synthesis. Storage proteins were quantified in females and males from the late larval stage through day 4 of adult life. The level of storage protein peaked in the early pupal stage, with females having about twice as much as males. In males, the level fell through pupal development and dropped to a trace by one day after eclosion. In females, level of storage proteins fell until eclosion, and then rose dramatically within four hours after the molt to about 2/3 of the original peak level. This post-eclosion increase, which has not been reported previously in insects, suggests that adult females synthesize hexamerins to resequester amino acids. Subsequently, the level of storage proteins fell as vitellogenin appeared and eggs were laid. The ability to synthesize and sequester amino acids as storage proteins during the adult stage has wide-ranging implication for protein management in insects, particularly those that are long-lived and have flexible schedules of reproduction.  相似文献

Abstract. The timing of adult eclosion in tsetse, an event that normally occurs in mid-afternoon, is regulated by the daily cycle of temperature elevation. If a temperature cycle is maintained, the rhythm of eclosion persists under continuous light or continuous darkness. Artificially shifting the temperature peak to the scotophase results in a concomitant shift in the eclosion pattern. Daily temperature variations as small as 0.4°C are sufficient to establish the rhythm. Eclosion activity tracks the temperature peak, even if the pulses are of short duration (4 h) or with irregular frequencies of 12 or 36 h. The temperature-induced rhythm offers a simple mechanism for separating females and males. Individuals that pupariate on the same day eclose as adults over a 4–5 day period at 25°C, and in such collections, females are the first to eclose. This distinction makes it possible to collect samples of predominately one sex, a feature that may facilitate the collecting of males for use in the sterile-male technique.  相似文献

Both post-eclosion and post-feeding diuresis can be demonstrated in adult Monarch butterflies; and both these processes are significantly inhibited by neck-ligature. The post-eclosion response is restored in neck-ligatured animals by injection of whole head, brain, ventral nerve cord, and corpora cardiaca-corpora allata extracts, and the effect is dose dependent. The active substance appears to be a water soluble, heat stable, trypsin and protease sensitive, polypeptide, with a molecular weight estimated from gel filtration of approx. 3000, that is localized principally in the brain. The amount of active substance present in the head decreases during post-eclosion diuresis, when activity seems to be present in the haemolymph. However, diuretic activity can be demonstrated from heads obtained from Monarchs that are several days or weeks old. In the Monarch, post-eclosion diuresis appears to be under hormonal regulation. By contrast, extracts of whole heads and/or known endocrine organs do not significantly alter post-feeding diuresis in intact or neck-ligatured Monarchs. In addition, although diuresis in response to injections of large volumes of insect saline can be demonstrated in Monarchs, extracts of known endocrine organs do not affect the rate of post-injection diuresis in either neck-ligatured or intact animals. Such experiments, and others involving surgical interruption of the ventral nerve cord, indicate that the eclosion diuretic hormone does not play a major role in the regulation of post-feeding diuresis in this species.  相似文献

对不同发育时期家蚕Bombyx mori雌性性附腺核酸和蛋白质含量测定的结果表明, 从家蚕化蛹后第6天到成虫羽化当天的性附腺内总蛋白质含量不断增加,至羽化当天为最高,达860±70 μg/对。不同时期内能引诱野蚕黑卵蜂识别寄主的利它素在总蛋白中所占的比例差异明显,从化蛹后第6天的10%增加到羽化后的58%。性附腺的总RNA含量从化蛹第6天到成虫羽化前1天几乎是直线增加,但羽化后下降很快。不同时期分泌部中总RNA含量变化与贮存部明显不同。含量最高时,分泌部RNA可占整个性附腺RNA的90%以上,而贮存部总RNA含量则远少于分泌部,羽化当天约为分泌部的十分之一。分泌部总RNA中的18S亚基含量远高于28S亚基,明显不同于贮存部的。从分泌部总RNA中分离的mRNA存在明显的条带分布,这预示着高丰度的mRNA的存在与总蛋白中高含量利它素的存在有着特殊对应关系。  相似文献

Flight activities of three Spodoptera species were measured by the aid of flight actograph: S. litura and S. exuiga being regarded as long‐distance migratory insects, and S. depravata being non‐migratory and diapause‐inducible species. In all species tested, flight activities were observed only in scotophase, males showed far higher activities than females, being several times higher at the time of maximum flight activity, which was observed within 2 days after adult eclosion. Total flight activity in males was highest in S. litura, some being flyable even 12 days after eclosion, followed by S. exigua being one‐third compared to the former species, while in S. depravata flight activity was nearly half of that of the second species and most ceased to fly within a week after eclosion. There occurred species‐specific daily rhythms in flight activity during respective scotophase. In S. litura, both females and males exhibited a peak of flight activity shortly after light‐off and exhibited the second flight activity in late scotophase, the females slightly but the males more actively compared to early scotophase. In S. exigua, both sexes did not respond to light‐off, did not show a peak of flight activity in early scotophase, whereas males, but not females prominently increased activity toward the end of scotophase. In S. depravata, both sexes exhibited a peak of flight activity in early scotophase, and the males revived flight activity, being maximum shortly before light‐on, but the females did not show a clear rhythm in flight activity. These features observed in flight activity were discussed in relation with migratory capability.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In Holomelina lamae Freeman daily eclosion of adults is gated, with males emerging before females. By advancing the onset of photophase and by delaying the onset of scotophase, it was demonstrated that lights-on acts as the main phase-setting cue for calling. Few females call on the day they eclose. Calling is initiated c. 9 h after the onset of photophase in 2-day-old females, and shifts to earlier times in older females. The duration of calling also increases with age. That calling is controlled by an endogenous circadian clock is indicated by its persistence in continuous light (LL) and dark (DD). In LL calling is dampened rapidly, but a single scotophase re-entrains the rhythm. Decreases in temperature advance the onset of calling and the mean hour of calling, while increases in temperature delay both. However, the magnitudes of such phase-shifts depended upon hour of the photoperiod. Moreover, cooling and heating appears to exert both transient and long-term effects on the calling rhythm. An 8 h period at a reduced temperature in LL induces calling in females whose calling is dampened, and entrains the calling rhythm. Females maintained in DD from second instar larvae to the adult stage exhibit a circadian calling rhythm set by eclosion.  相似文献

Summary During five days prior to the introduction of potential intruder larvae, residents were treated in four different ways. In one treatment the residents were unfed and their nets were taken away at daily intervals. Nets were not taken away in the other treatments, and residents were unfed, fed 2 or 4 items per day, respectively. Small intruders were equally successful as large ones in taking over low energy demanding nets of unfed, disturbed residents whose nets were taken away daily. Take overs of high ranked nets of larvae fed four prey items per day were mainly performed by large intruders. Low investment nets of unfed, disturbed resident larvae were often taken over during the first day upon the implantation of intruder larvae. On the contrary, unfed undisturbed larvae defending a five times as energy demanding net only suffered a slight net loss. Nets of unfed, undisturbed larvae were taken over somewhat more often than those from residents fed two prey per day. The results indicate prior treatment to inform these three resident categories of their resource values. Owners of high ranked nets fed two prey per day were most keen on defence during the first day upon introduction of potential intruders. Residents fed four prey per day suffered from a significantly higher number of take overs during the first day compared with larvae only fed two prey per day. The residents fed four prey per day stored some of the food in their nets making this resource more valuable also to intruders. After five days the number of take overs was about the same irrespective of previous treatment.  相似文献

Ecdysteroid levels were determined by radioimmunoassay, using an antiserum with higher affinity for ecdysterone than for ecdysone. In both sexes, the ecdysteroid level remains low until day 3 after eclosion. When fed liver on day 3, the ecdysteroid titre declines within 4 h in both sexes, stays low in males, but increases again after 12 h in females. The content in non-liver-fed animals, specially females, was significantly higher than if given liver. The level in liver-fed whole animals increased during oogenesis from the onset of follicular growth until the 4B—4C stage, and decreased thereafter.

During embryogenesis, a new high level was found in females, due to the developing embryos which contained a high titre. In isolated ovaries, the ecdysteroid content increased during follicular growth, with a steep increase during the last phase (4C—M and from M to uterine eggs). The ecdysteroid content in hemolymph of 7-day-old females, fed liver or not, was around 10 ng/ml, but in hemolymph of males of the same age no activity was found.

Ovariectomized females contained 12.4 ng/g ecdysteroid. The level during metamorphosis was also determined, mainly to be able to compare our radioimmunoassay results with known bioassay data. Our results support the statement that the ovary cannot be the only site of synthesis of molting hormone in adult S. buttata.  相似文献
