The effects of pre-sowing magnetic treatments on growth and yield of tomato (cv Campbell-28) were investigated under field conditions. Tomato seeds were exposed to full-wave rectified sinusoidal non-uniform magnetic fields (MFs) induced by an electromagnet at 100 mT (rms) for 10 min and at 170 mT (rms) for 3 min. Non-treated seeds were considered as controls. Plants were grown in experimental plots (30.2 m(2)) and were cultivated according to standard agricultural practices. During the vegetative and generative growth stages, samples were collected at regular intervals for growth rate analyses, and the resistance of plants to geminivirus and early blight was evaluated. At physiological maturity, the plants were harvested from each plot and the yield and yield parameters were determined. In the vegetative stage, the treatments led to a significant increase in leaf area, leaf dry weight, and specific leaf area (SLA) per plant. Also, the leaf, stem, and root relative growth rates of plants derived from magnetically treated seeds were greater than those shown by the control plants. In the generative stage, leaf area per plant and relative growth rates of fruits from plants from magnetically exposed seeds were greater than those of the control plant fruits. At fruit maturity stage, all magnetic treatments increased significantly (P < .05) the mean fruit weight, the fruit yield per plant, the fruit yield per area, and the equatorial diameter of fruits in comparison with the controls. At the end of the experiment, total dry matter was significantly higher for plants from magnetically treated seeds than that of the controls. A significant delay in the appearance of first symptoms of geminivirus and early blight and a reduced infection rate of early blight were observed in the plants from exposed seeds to MFs. Pre-sowing magnetic treatments would enhance the growth and yield of tomato crop.  相似文献

Abstract Net CO2 assimilation was reduced in sites of infection by Exserohilum turcicum in leaves of Seneca 60 sweet corn before lesions appeared. In leaf tissue adjacent to infected areas, there was an early small increase in CO2 assimilation followed by a gradual decline to nearly 0 net CO2 exchange by 7 days after inoculation. Translocation of photosynthates in to disease lesions from healthy tissue distal to the lesions was observed within 1 h after exposure of 1.2–cm2 areas of the leaf blade to 14CO2. No translocation from lesions to healthy leaf tissue was observed. The effects of defoliation at specific leaf positions on yield of sweet corn plants were accurately simulated by a model in which yield is expressed as a function of healthy leaf area absorption of incident insolation. Removal of leaves from the bottom third of the plants caused no yield loss, whereas removal of leaves above the ear caused significant losses. The model underes, timated the yield loss caused by infection by E. turcicum by approximately 22 %. The observed effects of infection by E. turcicum on photosynthetic efficiency in leaf tissue adjacent to lesions and on translocation of photosynthates into lesion from distal parts of the leaf show that the effect of northern leaf blight on yield is greater than can be accounted for by the direct loss of healthy leaf area through necrosis within disease lesions.  相似文献

Stemphylium leaf blight caused by Stemphylium vesicarium and onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) are two common causes of leaf damage in onion production. Onion thrips is known to interact synergistically with pathogens to exacerbate plant disease. However, the potential relationship between onion thrips and Stemphylium leaf blight is unknown. In a series of controlled laboratory and field trials, the relationship between thrips feeding and movement on the development and severity of Stemphylium leaf blight were examined. In laboratory assays, onions (“Avalon” and “Ailsa Craig”) with varying levels of thrips feeding damage were inoculated with S. vesicarium. Pathogen colonisation and leaf dieback were measured after 2 weeks. In pathogen transfer assays, thrips were exposed to S. vesicarium conidia, transferred to onion and leaf disease development was monitored. In field trials, insecticide use was examined as a potential indirect means to reduce Stemphylium leaf blight disease and pathogen colonisation by reducing thrips damage. Results from laboratory trials revealed that a reduction in thrips feeding decreased S. vesicarium colonisation of onion leaves by 2.3–2.9 times, and decreased leaf dieback by 40–50%. Additionally, onion thrips were capable of transferring S. vesicarium conidia to onion plants (albeit at a low frequency of 2–14% of plants inoculated). In field trials, the symptoms and colonisation of Stemphylium leaf blight were reduced by 27 and 17%, respectively with the use of insecticide to control thrips. These results suggest that onion thrips may play a significant role in the development of Stemphylium leaf blight, and thrips control may reduce disease in commercial onion fields.  相似文献

Three roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. varieties (Sudani, Masri and White) were cultivated at three different locations to recognize the transportation ability of roselle cultivation from the narrow old valley land to broad new land in Egypt. Qena as origin in situ old land, El-Kanater as ex situ old land and Nubaria as ex situ new land were the considered locations. Six growth quantitative characters and bolls infestation by spiny bollworm, Earias insulana were evaluated. Growth characters of roselle plants were affected significantly by either variety or location. Qena region was more suitable for roselle plant growth as judged with plant height, number of branches, number of fruits and sepals dry weight, followed by Nubaria followed by El-Kanater. Whereas, plants grown at Nubaria produced more fresh sepals weight than Qena or El-Kanater grown plants. As for Sudani, Nubaria exhibited the tallest plants, with the highest number of fruits and the heaviest fresh sepals as compared with the corresponding plants in Qena or El-Kanater. Values of broad sense heritability were highest for all characters in Qena. While the number of fruits per plant had the highest heritability in all locations. Dry sepals yield had highly significant correlation with all studied characters except percentage of water loss in Qena and Nubaria. Path coefficient analysis confirmed that fresh sepals yield had the highest direct and indirect effects on dried sepals yield. Chemical constituents responsible to sepal quality tended to produce significant variations due to the changes in varieties or locations. The highest levels of anthocyanins and sugars were achieved by Sudani variety, but the highest levels of free amino acids and total soluble solids were recorded for Masri variety. Moreover, Nubaria region was the most favourable for the accumulation of more anthocyanins in the sepals of all varieties followed by Qena. Plants grown at Qena produced sepals with the highest levels of sugars, free amino acids, organic acids and total soluble solids, followed by Nubaria followed by El-Kanater plants. Infestation with spiny bollworm Earias insulana was increased from Sudani up to Masri up to White varieties. Plants grown at Nubaria had the lowest number of attacks by bolls in all varieties, followed by those at El-Kanater followed by Qena plants. Spiny bollworm infestation was positively correlated with the number of branches and dry sepals weight, but negatively correlated with sepal moisture loss and anthocyanin contents. These findings clearly indicated that the Nubaria region was considered as a promising reclaimed area suitable for roselle cultivation, especially for Sudani, the most economic variety.  相似文献

Abstract

Cotton production in Nigeria causes fluctuating socio-economic and biotic factors. Bacterial blight induced by Xanthomonas campestris pv malvacearum causes the greatest yield loss annually. A study was therefore carried out to investigate the resurgence of the disease on 10 different cotton genotypes in Dowaya, Kem and Ngurore which are the major cotton areas of Adamawa state of Nigeria under field conditions. Other objectives were to determine the relationship between the different manifestations of bacterial blight and the yield of seed cotton and to identify resistance in the selected genotypes to the disease manifestations. Results revealed the presence of angular leaf spot, vein and boll rot manifestations of the disease in the study areas. The absence of vein blight symptoms in the Kem location did not result in higher yield because the severity of the leaf spot for this location was relatively higher than for the other two locations. Results also revealed that despite the high severity of angular leaf spot, high boll rot and vein blight incidences observed particularly on SAMCOT-11, SAMCOT-13 and ex-Benin in these locations with a high yield of seed cotton was recorded. The three multi-adversity resistant genotypes (MAR), TX-CDP37HH-1-83, TAMCOT SP-21S and TAMCOT CAMD-E recorded relatively lower severity and incidences in both cases. There was, however, a significantly negative correlation between angular leaf spot severity, boll rot incidence and yield at Kem location, significant negative correlation between angular leaf spot severity, boll rot incidence, vein blight and yield at Dowaya location, as well as significant negative correlation between angular leaf spot severity, vein blight and yield at Ngurore location. The tolerant and high yielding SAMCOT-11, SAMCOT-13 and ex-Benin should through breeding work be improved to be used for production in this area and its surroundings.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted from 1972 to 1978 and from 1998 to 1999 to evaluate tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), larval feeding on flue-cured tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum (L.), yield in eastern North Carolina. In the earlier studies, using variety Coker 319, treatment plots were evaluated when either 0 or 100% of plants in a plot were infested with H. virescens larvae. Treatment differences based on actual yield loss (kilograms per hectare) were compared with estimations of yield loss based on leaf consumption and leaf loss. Results indicate actual yield loss when 100% of plants were infested was less than the corresponding estimates of yield loss. In the later experiments, two tobacco budworm-resistant lines, 'CU 263' and 'CU 370', were compared with a commercial susceptible variety, K 326, when 0, 10, 20, or 40% of plants were infested (1998) and 0, 10, 40, 75, or 100% of plants were infested (1999). Although significant increases in leaf equivalents consumed were associated with infestations exceeding the recommended threshold, differences were not detected for yield (kilograms per hectare), quality (dollars per kilogram), and value (dollars per hectare) within each tobacco line. Additionally, there was not a significant correlation between value and infestations level for any of the tobacco lines. These results provide economic support for tolerance of a higher treatment threshold. Although K 326 sustained more leaf equivalent loss than CU 263 and CU 370, the value of K 326 harvested was higher than that of CU 263 and CU 370. To justify use of resistant varieties, the combination of pest pressure and the benefit of host plant resistance must be greater than the capacity of a susceptible variety to produce competitive yields, despite sustaining significantly higher loss.  相似文献

The effect of Phytophthora leaf blight disease, caused by Phytophthora colocasiae Raciborski, on the accumulation of phenolics and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity in ex vitro plants was studied in three resistant (DP‐25, Duradim and Jhankri) and one susceptible (N‐118) genotypes of taro [Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott]. The inoculation of taro leaves with P. colocasiae spores resulted in a quantitative change in both biochemical parameters and induction of PPO isoforms in resistant genotypes. The amount of phenolics was increased owing to blight by 68.02%, 58.87%, 52.67% and 11.50% in DP‐25, Duradim, Jhankri and N‐118, respectively. The per cent increase in PPO under stress over non‐stress condition was also highest in DP‐25 (49.14%) followed by Duradim (41.56%), Jhankri (40.55%) and N‐118 (17.08%). The resistant genotypes showed higher activity of PPO as compared with susceptible ones, which was reflected through its banding pattern in isoenzyme analysis, detecting four different isoforms. The intensity of the bands was higher in the resistant genotypes than in susceptible N‐118. The appearance of high intensity bands and/or reduction in the intensity of particular isoform(s) in the zymograms of all the three resistant taro genotypes studied, led to the apparent conclusion of linking PPO isoenzyme expression with blight resistance in taro. The blight incidence (per cent leaf infection and leaf area infection) was lower in the resistant genotypes than in susceptible, N‐118. The yield reduction owing to blight was below 20% in DP‐25, Jhankri and Duradim, while the same was more than 40% in N‐118. The phenolics and PPO activity was negatively correlated with disease incidence and yield reduction owing to blight. Based on the results of disease incidence, biochemical contents and yield, the pattern of stress tolerance was DP‐25 > Duradim > Jhankri > N‐118. The studied parameters, i.e. phenolics and PPO could be used as biochemical markers for leaf blight stress tolerance studies in taro.  相似文献

Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum was transmitted from infested seed to the cotyledons of cotton cv. Deltapine 61 seedlings at 28°C and relative humidities (RH) of 90% or 73%. A resident population was present on the first and second true leaves but not on the third true leaf of plants at either RH. There were smaller numbers of resident bacteria on fewer leaves of plants at the lower RH than on plants at the higher RH. Cotton plants grown from infested seed at 25°C and 30°C and incubated at 100% RH at different stages of growth developed bacterial blight on leaves that were in bud or partly expanded when incubated. Resident cells of this pathogen can thus invade susceptible leaves when conditions are favourable for infection. Bacterial blight developed on more plants at 30°C than at 25°C. In a field trial, X. campestris pv. malvacearum transmitted from seed was present as resident bacteria on the third leaf from the growing point during the vegetative development of the plant. Resident bacteria, which infected young leaves during rainy periods, were isolated from the bacterial blight lesions which subsequently developed.  相似文献

Field populations of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, are structured into geographically widespread host races. In the cotton-producing regions of West and Central Africa (WCA), two genotypes have been repeatedly detected within the cotton host race, one of which (Burk1) is prevalent (>90%) and resistant to several insecticides, as opposed to the second one (Ivo). Here, we conducted whole plant and field cage experiments to test hypotheses for such low genetic diversity, including selection from insecticide treatments, interclonal competition and adaptation to host plant, or climatic conditions. To assess the genetic diversity of immigrant aphids, alatae were trapped and collected on cotton and relay host plants (okra and roselle) in the early cropping season. Individuals were genotyped at eight specific microsatellite loci and characterized by a multilocus genotype (MLG). When independently transferred from cotton (Gossypium hirustum L.) leaf discs to whole plants (G. hirsutum and G. arboreum, roselle and okra), Ivo and Burk1 performed equally well. When concurrently transferred from cotton leaf discs to the same plant species, Ivo performed better than Burk1, indicating that competition favoured Ivo. This was also the case on G. hirsutum growing outdoors. Conversely, Burk1 prevailed when cotton plants were sprayed with insecticides. In experiments where aphids were allowed to move to neighbouring plants, Burk1 was better represented than Ivo on low-populated plants, suggesting that dispersal may be a way to avoid competition on crowded plants. Most cotton aphids collected on cotton or relay host plants in the early cropping season were Burk1 (>90%), indicating high dispersal ability and, probably reflecting high frequency on host plants from which they dispersed. In the agricultural landscape of WCA, the use of broad-range insecticides on both cotton and relay host plants has led to the prevalence of one genotype of A. gossypii resistant to different classes of insecticides. Deployment of widespread and integrated pest management strategies are needed to restore cotton aphid control.  相似文献

In order to reduce heat energy consumption in greenhouse cucumber production, (transparent) screens may be used also during the day, particularly in the early growth phase when high temperatures are required to achieve rapid leaf area development. However, energy savings must be optimised against light reduction‐induced yield loss. For this reason, two experiments were conducted to quantify the effect on photosynthesis and growth of screening cucumber plants during their early growth phase, and on yield in the following generative phase. Screening with different light transmission coefficients was simulated using shading nets. Shading the plants during the first 5 weeks under Central European winter conditions reduced the leaf area by 0.40% per 1% reduction in photosynthetic active radiation (PAR). Moreover, potential leaf net photosynthesis decreased by 0.46% per 1% PAR reduction. A major impact was that the leaf dry matter content, leaf starch content and leaf sugar content of shaded plants diminished significantly. In the course of the following 2 weeks under full light, the leaf photosynthesis of the plants previously shaded recovered fully and the leaf area index rose to 3.3 m2 m?2, considered sufficient for optimal crop photosynthesis. The yield from plants previously shaded diminished slightly as early as from the first harvest week on. These yield losses increased further over the next few weeks, measuring approximately 0.8 kg m?2 per 1 mol m?2 day?1 PAR reduction in the early growth phase. The effect of PAR on plant growth was proportional when relating the PAR integral over the entire experimental period to the total yield and to the total dry matter production, respectively.  相似文献

比较了在人工遮光增湿环境和自然环境下18个玉米杂交种生长发育特性的差异,研究了阴湿环境对玉米杂交种生长发育特性的影响.结果表明: 遮光增湿环境使空气湿度比自然环境增加15.0%~16.4%,土壤湿度增加27.0%~78.4%,光照强度降低72.9%~77.9%,光量子减少72.8%~79.6%,差异均达显著或极显著水平,但不影响环境温度.阴湿环境导致玉米植株第7叶宽、有效功能叶数、成株叶片数、雄穗分枝数、茎粗、株高、穗位高、穗长、穗粗、穗行数、行粒数、百粒重和单株粒重13个性状表现为负向变异(表型值变小),其中单株粒重降幅达72.3%,株高降幅7.1%,其余性状降幅介于14.8%~53.8%之间;第7叶长、第7叶长宽比、散粉至抽丝间隔天数(ASI)、小斑病指数和纹枯病指数等5个性状表现为正向变异(表型值增大),分别增大39.8%、80.5%、114.3%、73.0%和54.8%.用ASI、雄穗分枝数、成株叶片数、株高、单株粒重、小斑病指数和纹枯病指数7个性状计算出的综合耐阴湿系数作为玉米杂交种耐阴湿鉴定的指标,具有一定的可靠性,且简便易行.运用该指标可将18个杂交种划分为耐阴湿性强、耐阴湿性中等和耐阴湿性弱3类.  相似文献

研究表明葱斑潜蝇百株潜道 (X)与大葱产量损失率 (Y)之间呈显著的相关性 ,其相关回归式 :Y=-2 .8397+ 0 .0 30 4 8X。在大葱产量 30 0 0~ 6 0 0 0kg 6 6 7m2 时 ,经济允许损失率为 1 .4 7%~ 2 .94 % ,允许百株潜道为 1 4 1 .4~ 1 89.6条 ;防治指标拟定为百株潜道 1 5 0条。防治适期为成虫羽化高峰期至幼虫初孵期 ;大葱生育中、后期 ( 6~ 1 0月 )防治对于降低葱属作物的损失具有较大意义。药剂防治以含有阿维菌素的制剂和乐斯本效果较好。  相似文献

A leaf spot and leaf blight disease was observed on Aloe vera plants as small, circular to oval dark brown necrotic sunken spots on leaves. Infected tissues collected from different sites in diseased fields were cultured on potato carrot agar medium, and the pathogen was identified as Alternaria alternata on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics. The conidiophores were branched, straight, golden brown, smooth‐walled, measuring up to μm long by 3 μm wide with one conidial scar. The conidia were golden brown in colour and produced in long branched chains, obclavate in shape and in short conical flask. Pathogenicity tests conducted on healthy potted aloe plants in a glasshouse showed typical leaf spot symptoms after 4–7 days. The optimal temperature for the growth of A. alternata was 25°C.  相似文献

The effect of net blotch on the growth and yield of cv. Beatrice spring barley was examined in a greenhouse experiment. Separate inoculations at growth stages 21 and 34 reduced green leaf area, root weight, leaf sheath and stem weight and tiller number. The early inoculated plants, which responded and recovered more rapidly than later treated ones, suffered a loss in grain yield and this was related to the amount of disease, the loss in green leaf area and the reduction in unit leaf rate.  相似文献

2000-2004在浙江较系统地研究了山区和半山区稻田稻秆潜蝇的种群动态与为害损失的关系,组建了田间自然种群生命表。结果表明:自然条件下,1、2代稻秆潜蝇的卵、幼虫、蛹、成虫死亡率分别为42.7%、14.5%、4.4%、12.6%和32.8%、16.5%、18.9%、15.6%。水稻秧苗期、大田期稻秆潜蝇卵(虫)量与株为害率、为害损失率的关系分析表明,随着卵(虫)量增加,株为害率上升,产量损失率加大,两者呈显著正相关。成虫盛发至卵孵盛期为防治适期,稻秆潜蝇防治指标为秧苗期平均每百株有卵10粒,株为害率1%以上;大田期平均每丛水稻有卵1粒,株为害率3%~5%。  相似文献

The ability of a rhizobacterium to protect tomato plants against naturally occurring diseases as well as to improve crop yield under field conditions was studied. The rhizobacterium was introduced to the plants through seed microbiolization. Treatments consisted of different frequencies of fungicide (Chlorothalonyl) sprayings (5, 10 or 20 applications) of tomato plants grown from either microbiolized or non‐microbiolized seeds over a 90‐day evaluation period. Treatment of non‐microbiolized seeds without fungicide application was included as a control. The progress of the following three naturally occurring diseases was evaluated in the field and quantified: early blight (Alternaria solani), late blight (Phytophthora infestans), and septoria leaf spot (Septoria lycopersici). All treatments resulted in reduced disease severity when compared with the control treatment. Highest final fruit yields were found after treatment of plants grown from non‐microbiolized seeds and sprayed with fungicide 20 times over 90 days, and for treatment of plants from microbiolized seeds that received 10 fungicide spray applications, although all treatments increased yield over that obtained in the control treatment. The results demonstrate that combined rhizobacterial and chemical treatments in the field may permit reducing fungicidal spraying frequency while at the same time increasing crop yields.  相似文献

收集了云南粳稻主产区沾益、寻甸两县106块稻田水稻有害生物为害和产量等信息,并用两种方法对其分析。第一种方法应用聚类分析和对应分析描述水稻有害生物为害类型和产量水平之间的关系,第二种方法应用主成分分析和多元逐步回归估计各为害的产量损失。聚类分析确定了7种有害生物为害类型,其中IN1、IN2和IN3为害水平较低,而IN5、IN6和IN7为害水平较高。有害生物为害类型和水稻产量水平之间的对应分析,在前两个轴构成的因子空间内绘出了各为害类型和产量水平的位置,并给出了一条与为害类型紧密联系的产量水平增加路线。该分析暗示与位于该因子平面右边的有害生物为害类型(IN1、IN2和IN3)相比,位于左边的为害类型(IN5、IN6和IN7)将引起水稻更大的产量损失。主成分多元回归分析评估了水稻各种病、虫、草害所造成的减产量及其相对重要性。分析结果表明,高于水稻冠层杂草、蛀茎害虫(白穗)、稻纵卷叶螟、白叶枯病、粘虫、叶瘟病和稻飞虱是该稻作区对水稻产量影响较大的为害因子。  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of potassium (K) on sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) development on rice plants from cultivars BR‐IRGA 409 and Labelle grown in nutrient solution containing 0, 50 and 100 mm of K. Sheath blight progress on inoculated sheaths was evaluated by measuring the relative lesion length at 48, 72, 96 and 120 h after inoculation (hai). Data were used to calculate the area under relative lesion length progress curve (AURLLPC). The foliar K concentration on leaf sheaths tissue increased by 61.48 and 116.05% to cultivars BR‐IRGA 409 and Labelle, respectively, as the K rates increased from 0 to 100 mm . A linear model best described the relationship between the AURLLPC and the K rates. The AURLLPC decreased by 29.2 and 21.3% for cultivars BR‐IRGA 409 and Labelle, respectively, as the K rates in the nutrient solution increased. It can be concluded that high K concentration on leaf sheaths tissue was important to decrease sheath blight symptoms on rice leaf sheaths.  相似文献

Assessment of the differential expression of antioxidative enzymes and their isozymes, was done in 30 day-old ex vitro raised plants of three highly resistant (DP-25, Jhankri and Duradim) and one highly susceptible (N-118) genotypes of taro [Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott]. Antioxidative enzymes were assayed in the ex vitro plants, 7 days after inoculation with the spores (15,000 spores ml−1 water) of Phytophthora colocasiae Raciborski to induce taro leaf blight disease. Uninoculated ex vitro plants in each genotype were used as control. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) increased under induced blight condition when compared with control. Increase in antioxidative enzymes was more (67–92%) in the resistant genotypes than that (21–29%) of the susceptible genotype. The zymograms of SOD and GPX in the resistant genotypes, with pathogenic infection, showed increased activity for anodal isoform of SOD and increased expression and/or induction of either POX 1 or POX 2 isoforms of GPX. In susceptible genotype, expression of the above isoforms was faint for SOD and nearly absent for GPX under both blight free and induced blight conditions. Induction and/or increased activity of particular isoform of SOD and GPX against infection of Phytophthora colocasiae in the resistant genotypes studied led to the apparent conclusion of linkage of isozyme expression with blight resistance in taro. This might be an important criterion in breeding of taro for Phytophthora leaf blight resistance.  相似文献
