This study investigated cardiovascular responses to 2 min sustained submaximal (20% MVC) and maximal (100% MVC) voluntary isometric contractions of the finger flexors in healthy young women. Cardiovascular variables investigated were: heart rate (f c), mean arterial pressure ( a), and stroke volume (SV). Doppler echocardiography was used to estimate SV from measures of aortic diameter (AD) and time-velocity integrals. Preliminary studies indicated that AD did not change significantly after 2 min sustained 100% MVC. Therefore, pre-exercise AD values were used to calculate SV before, during and after exercise. During the 2-min 100% MVC period, f c and aincreased significantly during the first 30 s of contraction. f c then remained constant during the remainder of the 2-min contraction period, while acontinued to rise. SV did not change significantly during the 100% MVC task but increased significantly during recovery from sustained 100% MVC. The data suggest that the magnitude of cardiovascular responses to isometric exercise is dependent on the specific task performed, and that there is a different pattern of response for f c, a, and SV during 20% and 100% MVC tasks. Unlike f c and a, SV did not change significantly during isometric exercise, but increased significantly after sustained 100% MVC.  相似文献

We have previously observed that 11-year-old children of low socio-economic status (LSES) showed a delayed physical growth of approximately 2 years and developed lower normalized short-term power output than children of high socio-economic status (HSES) of the same age. In contrast, maximal oxygen uptake per unit of fat free mass was no different in either group. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anthropometric characteristics between HSES and LSES prepubertal children in aerobic and anaerobic performance. To compare children of the same body dimensions, 11-year-old boys (n = 30) and girls (n = 31) of LSES and 9-year-old boys (n = 21) and girls (n = 27) of HSES were studied. Anthropometric measurements, (direct test), maximal anaerobic power (P max, force-velocity test) and mean anaerobic power ( , Wingate test) were determined. In these children having the same body dimensions: mean were the same in LSES and HSES children [1.2 (SD 0.2)1-min–1];P max and were lower in LSES subjects [154.0 (SD 33.2) vs 174.6 (SD 38.4) W and 116.3 (SD 23.3) vs 128.2 (SD 28.0) W, respectively]; the linear relationships between and fat free mass were the same in LSES and HSES boys but, in the girls, the LSES group had lower values. For anaerobic performance, the relationships were significantly different: the slopes were the same but LSES values for the both sexes were lower. These results would suggest that factors other than differences in body dimensions alone were responsible for the lower performance of LSES girls and boys. Cultural factors and motor learning, structural and functional alterations of muscle induced by marginal malnutrition have been discussed.  相似文献

Absorption of gas from alveoli is examined in a simplified model of the respiratory system during a stylized single breath consisting of constant inspiratory flow, constant expiratory flow, and breathholding. The equations describing gas behavior are general since they are based upon conservation of mass. The equations simplify considerably when gases that are not soluble in pulmonary tissue and/or blood are utilized. In a three-compartment model, diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (D CO ) will be underestimated except when both uneven distribution of lung volume andD CO are present; under most circumstances, the standard clinical 10-s method [9] is at least as accurate as any other. When pulmonary capillary blood flow is calculated by the one point method [2] in a one-compartment lung, it is underestimated; in the three-compartment model, it is underestimated except when both uneven distribution of . and lung volume are present. The multiple single breath method [2] accurately measuresD CO and . Measurement of pulmonary tissue volume is improved by correcting the value of the intercept of acetylene absorption to the time when carbon monoxide apparently began rather than utilizing the beginning of inspiration.Nomenclature D CO diffusing capacity of the lung for CO (ml CO, STPD/min/mm Hg) - pulmonary capillary blood flow rate (L/min) - V t pulmonary tissue volume (L) - V A alveolar compartment volume (L) - V Ao alveolar compartment volume at conclusion of inspiratory flow (L) - inspiratory flow rate (L/sec) - expiratory flow rate (L/sec) - Bunsen coefficient of pulmonary tissue for test gas (ml test gas/ml tissue/atm) - Bunsen coefficient of pulmonary tissue for test gas (ml test gas/ml blood/atm) - F A fractional pressure of test gas in the alveolar compartment (atm)  相似文献

The absolute volume of biological objects is often estimated stereologically from an exhaustive set of systematic sections. The usual volume estimator is the sum of the section contents times the distance between sections. For systematic sectioning with a random start, it has been recently shown that is unbiased when m, the ratio between projected object length and section distance, is an integer number (Cruz-Orive 1985). As this quantity is no integer in the real world, we have explored the properties of in the general and realistic situation m . The unbiasedness of under appropriate sampling conditions is demonstrated for the arbitrary compact set in 3 dimensions by a rigorous proof. Exploration of further properties of for the general triaxial ellipsoid leads to a new class of non-elementary real functions with common formal structure which we denote as np-functions. The relative mean square error (CE 2) of in ellipsoids is an oscillating differentiable np-function, which reduces to the known result CE 2= 1/(5m 4) for integer m. As a biological example the absolute volumes of 10 left cardiac ventricles and their internal cavities were estimated from systematic sections. Monte Carlo simulation of replicated systematic sectioning is shown to be improved by using m instead of m . In agreement with the geometric model of ellipsoids with some added shape irregularities, mean empirical CE was proportional to m –1.36 and m–1.73 in the cardiac ventricle and its cavity. The considerable variance reduction by systematic sectioning is shown to be a geometric realization of the principle of antithetic variates.  相似文献

Inconsistencies exist in the standard expansions used to approximate selection coefficients for alleles at a locus underlying a quantitative character. Allelic (marginal) fitnesses obtained from expansions based on average excesses differ from allelic fitnesses obtained from expansions based on genotypic values. Similarly, the mean population fitness based on summing over either allelic or genotypic fitnesses usually differs mean population fitness obtained by averaging over the unrestricted phenotypic distribution. A consistent value of requires no variation in genotypic values. If, as suggested by Nagylaki (1984), expansions are corrected for the decrease in phenotypic variance resulting from conditioning on the presence of a particular allele or genotype, inconsistencies still exist. Unless W(z)[V z p(z) + zp(z) + p(z)] dz = 0, where p(z) is the phenotypic probability density function, V z the phenotypic variance, W( z ) the fitness of phenotypic value z, the primes denote differentiation with respect to z, allelic fitnesses based on average effects differ from allelic fitnesses based on genotypic values. This condition must also be satisfied in order for either expansion to give a consistent , as first shown by Nagylaki. For arbitrary W(z), this is satisfied if and only if phenotypes are normally distributed.  相似文献

Summary Resting rates of O2 consumption against , exercise endurance times and during recovery from vigorous exercise were measured inSceloporus occidentalis captured near sea level and inS. graciosus captured above 2850 m. Oxygen consumption against was also measured inS. occidentalis captured above 2850 m. When was recorded continuously, as ambient was slowly reduced from 155 Torr, it became directly dependent upon ambient between 110 and 120 Torr. The critical for the high altitude lizards was lower than that for the lowland lizards, which enabled the former to maintain relatively higher 's when ambient was reduced below 120 Torr. The high altitude lizards also had significantly greater endurance when stimulated to exercise at 1600 m ( 130 Torr). Both the higher under hypoxia and the greater endurance roughly parallel a significantly greater maximum in the high altitude lizards. At a simulated altitude of 3600 m ( 100 Torr), maximum and rate of recovery of the O2 debt calculated from post active were significantly reduced in the lowland but not the high altitude lizards. The effects of simulated altitude conditions on the lowland but not the mountaine animals indicate adaptations to altitude in these sceloporine lizards. We did not find any consistent relationship between organ/body weight ratios or hematocrit and our measures of endurance or the altitude at which the lizards were captured.  相似文献

We investigated the aerobic and anaerobic contributions to performance during the Wingate test in sprint and middle-distance runners and whether they were related to the peak aerobic and anaerobic performances determined by two commonly used tests: the force-velocity test and an incremental aerobic exercise test. A group of 14 male competitive runners participated: 7 sprinters, aged 20.7 (SEM 1.3) years, competing in 50, 100 and 200-m events and 7 middle-distance runners, aged 20.0 (SEM 1.0) years, competing in 800, 1,000 and 1,500 m-events. The oxygen uptake ( ) was recorded breath-by-breath during the test (30 s) and during the first 20 s of recovery. Blood samples for venous plasma lactate concentrations were drawn at rest before the start of the test and during the 20-min recovery period. During the Wingate test mean power ( ) was determined and three values of mechanical efficiency, one individual and two arbitrary, 16% and 25%, were used to calculate the contributions of work by aerobic ( aer,ind,16%,25%) and anaerobic ( an,ind,16%,25%) processes. Peak anaerobic power ( an,peak) was estimated by the force-velocity test and maximal aerobic energy expenditure ( aer, peak) was determined during an incremental aerobic exercise test. During the Wingate test, the middle-distance runners had a significantly greater than the sprinters (P < 0.001), who had significantly greater venous plasma lactate concentrations (P < 0.001). Moreover, aer,ind,16%,25% were also significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the middle-distance runners [ aer,ind 45 (SEM 4) % vs 28 (SEM 2) %; aer,16% 30 (SEM 3) % vs 19 (SEM 2) %; aer,25% 46 (SEM 3) % vs 29 (SEM 2)%]; an,ind,16%,25% in the sprint runners (P < 0.05) [ an,ind 72 (SEM 3) % vs 55 (SEM 4) %; an,16% 81 (SEM 2) % vs 70 (SEM 3) %; an,25% 71 (SEM 2) % vs 54 (SEM 3) %]. The aer,ind/ aer, peak and × an,ind/ an,peak ratios, however, were not significantly different between the two groups of athletes. These results would indicate that the sprinters and middle-distance runners used preferentially a metabolic system according to their speciality. Nevertheless, under the conditions of its experiment, they seemed to rely on the same percentage of both peak anaerobic and peak aerobic performance for a given exercise task.  相似文献

Summary In dynamic light scattering, measurements of the intensity-intensity time correlation function from a suspension of rod-like particles of length L could reveal dynamical information related to translational and internal motions of those particles. For a suspension of thick filaments isolated from the myosin-regulated, striated muscles of Limulus at KL>1 (where K is the scattering vector), the average characteristic linewidth ( ) increased with the addition of Ca2+ or with the depletion of ATP. The increase in the with the addition of Ca2+ could be due to the presence of energy-requiring, high-frequency motions of the crossbridges activated by Ca2+. The increase in which occurred with the depletion of ATP was assumed to be mainly due to the thermal motions of the crossbridges after they had moved radially away from the filament backbone. The percentage increase in following the addition of Ca2+ was found to be seasonal, i.e., values of obtained from thick filaments isolated between the middle of June and the middle of September were smaller than those obtained during the rest of the year. The effect of temperature on the percentage increase in was also different. The increase showed a maximum at about 35°C during the summer and at about 25°C at other times. However, the percentage increase in developed under ATP-depleted conditions showed no temperature-related maximum. The number of bound Ca2+ per myosin molecule was 1 during the summer and 2 at other times.Abbreviations DLS dynamic light scattering - L length - K scattering vector - SDS-PAGE sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis - average characteristic line width Deceased  相似文献

Summary The postulate that 60-Hz electric field-induced bioeffect severity is proportional to induced transmembrane potential [ ] magnitude was tested and supported using a plant root model cell system. Statistically significant correlations were obtained upon regression of the relative rates of exposedVicia faba andZea mays root segment growth on the average (calculated) arising in those segments under specified 60 Hz field exposure conditions. The associated with the apparent threshold for growth inhibition was similar inZea andVicia roots (2.5 vs 2.4 mV, respectively). At greater than this threshold,Zea root growth declined by about 9% per mV, andVicia root growth by about 19% per mV induced potential.Abbreviations EF electric field - RGR relative growth rate - RSGR relative segmental growth rate - induced membrane potential - segmental-average induced membrane potential - VC d region of root tip in which a complete, nascent vascular cylinder is first distinguishable in histological sections  相似文献

Summary The genetic behaviour of a human serum -lipoprotein factor, called Ag(a1), was studied by agar micro-diffusion technique, utilizing an antibody detected in the serum from a transfused thalassemia patient. It behaves as an inherited, dominant, autosomal character, with complete penetrance at birth. It is controlled by a gene and is closely linked to the Ag x and Ag y genes. The existence of a gene Ag b , allelic to , is postulated but the Ag(b) antigen has not so far been detected by specific antisera. The frequency of the gene in a Milan population was found to be 0,43, and in a Berne population was 0,46. The frequencies of the four possible gene combinations in the sample group from Milan were: Ag yb =0,53; =0,22; =0,21; Ag xb =0,04.The observed frequencies of the factor Ag(a1) were 0,676 and 0,713, respectively among the Milan and Berne populations.  相似文献

Summary The electrophoretic mobilities of serum enzymes and other proteins were investigated at 35 loci in 25 unrelated individuals of the chimpanzee Pan troglodytes. In this population the mean average of individual polymorphism is =0181, and the average level of heterozygoty =0.022. The same pattern of individual variability is found in Pan troglodytes and Homo sapiens.  相似文献

Summary The brush turkey (Alectura lathami) and mallee fowl (Leipoa ocellata) are megapode birds that incubate their eggs by burying them in mounds. Respiratory gas exchange between the buried eggs and the atmosphere occurs mainly by diffusion through about 60 cm of decomposing forest litter (brush turkey) or sand (mallee fowl).Gas fluxes in the brush turkey mound are greatly influenced by the respiration of thermophilic microorganisms which consume O2 at rates over eight times that of all of the eggs. The respiratory exchange ratio ( ) of the microorganisms is 0.75 and theQ 10 for metabolism is 2.56. Fermentation and nitrogen fixation do not occur in the mounds. If the mound becomes too wet, gas tensions near the eggs can become critical because water increases rates of microbial respiration and impedes gas diffusion. However, field mounds are relatively dry, possibly because the adult bird modifies the shape of the mound and affects the entry of rain water. At egg level in field mounds, and are about 132 and 21 Torr, respectively, in both species. Embryonic respiration decreases and increases about 5 Torr in the immediate environment of individual eggs in late development. Due to a high eggshell gas conductance, which increases during incubation, the gas tensions within the shell of late embryos ( ca. 108 Torr, ca. 47 Torr) are not far from the mean values found in species that nest above ground.  相似文献

Summary Ventral (VAP) and dorsal (DAP) aortic blood pressure, heart rate (HR) and cardiac output ( ) were recorded simultaneously in unanaesthetized Atlantic cod, and the effects of vasoactive drugs on the cardio-vascular parameters studied. Mean resting values for the parameters were VAP=4,39 kPa, DAP=2,49 kPa, HR=41 beats/min, and = 29,1 ml/min×kg. Adrenaline constricted the systemic vasculature, dilated the branchial vasculature and caused a decrease of HR and due to a cholinergic reflex. After atropine pre-treatment this reflex was abolished, and the effect of adrenaline on blood pressure enhanced. A small decrease in persisted after atropine, presumably reflecting the effect of an increased end-systolic afterload.Phenylephrine produced a weak increase in systemic vascular resistance, while isoprenaline lowered both systemic and branchial vascular resistance. The effect of isoprenaline is probably mediated by beta adrenoceptors in both vascular beds, since propranolol antagonizes the effect.Acetylcholine in low doses produces a drop in without affecting HR, while higher doses also stop the heart. There is no significant change in either branchial and systemic vascular resistance after acetylcholine.Abbreviations VAP mean ventral aortic blood pressure - DAP mean dorsal aortic blood pressure - TBPD trans-branchial blood pressure drop - HR heart rate - SV stroke volume - cardiac output (ventral aortic blood flow) - VR g branchial vascular resistance - VR s systemic vascular resistance  相似文献

Summary Influence of pressure (P) and oxygen partial pressure ( ) on cultivation of various Streptomyces spp. and Micromonospora purpurea was examined in pressurized air-lift and stirred tank fermenters. The maximum was 2100 mbar. Growth and product formation of all cultures tested were markedly influenced by higher than 1000 mbar. There is evidence that wild strains are more oxygen tolerant than production strains. At a certain the metabolic activities of all cultures were inhibited. However, results obtained with S. aureofaciens and S. rimosus indicated an increase in specific product formation rate at elevated pressure. With increase in oxygen tension incorporation of oxygen into tetracycline molecules was enhanced. Since elevated oxygen tension can either show inhibiting effects or may be used for regulation of product formation and selectivity, the influence of should be determined in an appropriate experimental set-up for each process.Offprint requests to: U. Summary Six Standardbred horses were used to evaluate the time course of pulmonary gas exchange, ventilation, heart rate (HR) and acid base balance during different intensities of constant-load treadmill exercise. Horses were exercised at approximately 50%, 75% and 100% maximum oxygen uptake ( max) for 5 min and measurements taken every 30 s throughout exercise. At all work rates, the minute ventilation, respiratory frequency and tidal volume reached steady state values by 60 s of exercise. At 100% max, the oxygen consumption ( ) increased to mean values of approximately 130 ml/kg·min, which represents a 40-fold increase above resting . At the low and moderate work rates, showed no significant change from 30 s to 300 s of exercise. At the high work rate, the mean at 30 s was 80% of the value at 300 s. The HR showed no significant change over time at the moderate work rate but differing responses at the low and high work rates. At the low work rate, the mean HR decreased from 188 beats/min at 30 s to 172 beats/min at 300 s exercise, whereas at the high work rate the mean HR increased from 204 beats/min at 30 s to 221 beats/min at 300 s exercise. No changes in acid base status occurred during exercise at the low work rate. At the moderate work rate, a mild metabolic acidosis occurred which was nonprogressive with time, whereas the high work rate resulted in a progressive metabolic acidosis with a base deficit of 16 mmol/l by 300 s exercise. It is concluded that the kinetics of gas exchange during exercise are more rapid in the horse than in man, despite the relatively greater change in in the horse when going from rest to high intensity exercise.Symbols and abbreviations E minute ventilation - V T tidal volume - oxygen uptake - carbon dioxide output - oxygen pulse - ventilatory equivalent for oxygen - ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide - R respiratory exchange ratio - HR heart rate - SBC standard bicarbonate - STPD standard temperature and pressure dry - BTPS body temperature and pressure saturated - arterial oxygen content - arteriovenous oxygen content difference - Rf respiratory frequency  相似文献

Summary The effects of different ambient temperatures (T a) on gas exchange and ventilation in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) were determined after acclimation to low and high altitude (340 and 3,800 m).At both low and high altitude, oxygen consumption ( ) decreased with increasingT a atT a from –10 to 30 °C. The was 15–20% smaller at high altitude than at low altitude atT a below 30 °C.Increased atT a below thermoneutrality was supported by increased minute volume ( ) at both low and high altitude. At mostT a, the change in was primarily a function of changing respiration frequency (f); relatively little change occurred in tidal volume (V T) or oxygen extraction efficiency (O2EE). AtT a=0 °C and below at high altitude, was constant due to decliningV T and O2EE increased in order to maintain high .At high altitude, (BTP) was 30–40% higher at a givenT a than at low altitude, except atT a below 10 °C. The increased at high altitude was due primarily to a proportional increase inf, which attained mean values of 450–500 breaths/min atT a below 0 °C. The (STP) was equivalent at high and low altitude atT a of 10 °C and above. At lowerT a, (STPD) was larger at low altitude. At both altitudes, respiratory heat loss was a small fraction (<10%) of metabolic heat production, except at highT a (20–30 °C).Abbreviations EHL evaporative heat loss - f respiration frequency - HL a heat loss from warming tidal air - HL e evaporative heat loss in tidal air - HL total respiratory heat loss - MHP metabolic heat production - O 2 EE oxygen extraction efficiency - RQ respiratory quotient - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperatureT lc lower critical temperature - carbon dioxide production - evaporative water loss - oxygen consumption - minute volume - V T tidal volume  相似文献

Summary D. melanogaster males of bb/O genetic constitution undergoing rDNA magnification were mated singly to XXbb +/O females, yielding bb/O male progeny, and to XNO-w sn bb + fameles, yielding bb/XNO- females. The male and female offspring were scored for the bb + phenotype. Results show that there is a higher percentage of bb + flies in the bb/O male progeny than in bb/XNO- females progeny, in single crosses as well as in the combined data. rRNA/DNA hybridization experiments agree with this observation, by showing that the rDNA content in the progeny of premagnified flies was higher in the sons than in the daughters. These data indicate that the increase of ribosomal RNA genes is not due to a stable event such as an unequal mitotic sister exchange, whereas they do not contrast with the extracopy model.  相似文献

Summary Oxygen consumption was measured at rest and during spontaneous activity at body temperatures of 25 and 35°C in 14 fasting Savanna monitor lizards,Varanus exanthematicus ranging in weight from 172 to 7500 g. The allometric relationship between metabolic rate at 25°C and body weight (W) is given by: (ml O2 STPD·g–1·hr–1)=0.88W –0.43 (Fig. 2). Although statistical comparisons are equivocal, this intraspecific size dependence exceeds that reported for interspecific comparisons among reptiles and other vertebrate groups (Fig 3). A reproducible diurnal pattern of activity was observed in undisturbed animals with minimum values of between 2400 and 0800 h (Fig. 1). Spontaneous activity and generally reached peak values between 1200 and 2000 hrs. The average ratio of active aerobic metabolic rate (AMR) to minimum (standard) aerobic metabolic rate (SMR) was 8.2. This voluntary AMR/SMR inVaranus exceeds the AMR/SMR for most reptiles stimulated to exhaustion. The high aerobic capacity is consistent with other evidence for efficient exchange and transport of respiratory gases inV. exanthematicus; e.g., low or absent intracardiac shunt flow resulting in high arterial saturation and low ventilation and perfusion requirements.  相似文献

The position of the body and use of the respiratory muscles in the act of rowing may limit ventilation and thereby reduce maximal aerobic power relative to that achieved in cycling or running, in spite of the greater muscle mass involved in rowing. This hypothesis was investigated for three groups of male subjects: nine elite senior oarsmen, eight former senior oarsmen and eight highly trained athletes unskilled in rowing. The subjects performed graded exercise to maximal effort on a rowing ergometer, cycle ergometer and treadmill while respiratory minute volume and oxygen consumption were monitored continuously. The VE at a given during intense submaximal exercise (greater than 75% of maximal ) was not significantly lower in rowing compared with that in cycling and treadmill running for any group, which would suggest that submaximal rowing does not restrict ventilation. At maximal effort, and for rowing were less than those for the other types of exercise in all the groups, although the differences were not statistically significant in the elite oarsmen. These data are consistent with a ventilatory limitation to maximal performance in rowing that may have been partly overcome by training in the elite oarsmen. Alternatively, a lower maximal VE in rowing might have been an effect rather than a cause of a lower maximal if maximal was limited by the lower rate of muscle activation in rowing.  相似文献

Summary Rates of protein synthesis and oxygen consumption ( O2) in cod were compared in both fasted and refed animals. During a 14-day fast both protein synthesis and respiration rates fell to stable values after 6 days. When a meal of whole sandeel at 6% body weight was fed to fish fasted for 6 days, protein synthesis and ( O2) increased to a maximum at between 12 and 18 h after feeding. Peak ( O2) was about twice the pre-feeding values, while whole animal protein synthesis increased four-fold. There were differences between tissues in the timing of maximum protein synthesis; the liver and stomach responded faster than the remainder of the body. Maximum protein synthesis rates in the liver and stomach occurred at 6 h after feeding, at which time their calculated contribution to total ( O2) was 11%. Similar calculations suggested that the integrated increment in whole animal protein synthesis contributed between 23% and 44% of the post-prandial increase in ( O2). It was concluded that protein synthesis is an important contributor to increased ( O2) after feeding in cod.Abbreviations A s absolute rate of protein synthesis - ASDA apparent specific dynamic action - ATP adenosine triphosphate - k s fractional rate of protein synthesis - k s/RNA amount of protein synthesized per unit RNA - ( O2) oxygen consumption - PCA perchloric acid - RNA ribonucleic acid  相似文献
