Digestion is an important process in understanding the feeding ecology of animals. We examined digesta passage time, digestibility, and total gut fill in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata; n = 4) under 4 dietary conditions representing the seasonal and regional variations in the diets of wild populations to determine the effects of food type and food intake on these digestive features. Food type is associated with mean retention time (MRT), digestibility, and total gut fill. Dry matter intake (DMI) of food correlates positively with total gut fill but not with MRT or digestibility. Conversely, indigestible DMI affected MRT negatively. Thus, when Japanese macaques consume high-fiber foods, MRT becomes shorter and digestibility is lower than when eating low-fiber foods. Moreover, macaques experience increases in total gut fill when they consume high-fiber diets or a large amount of food. Japanese macaques may excrete difficult-to-digest food components quickly; they nevertheless buffer an increase in food intake by an increase in gut fill. Our study offers new insights into the relationship between feeding ecology and nutritional physiology in primates by simultaneously examining the effects of food type and intake level on MRT and digestibility.  相似文献

We observed a group of capped langurs for 12 mo in the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh, India. We recorded the time of feeding on different food plant species, food categories, and the feeding heights of monkeys in trees. Capped langurs spent 68% of their feeding time on leaves, 16% on flowers, and 16% on fruits. Feeding on leaves was consistently high (p < 0.01) during the year, with the highest feeding in May (85%) and the lowest in January (47%). The seasonal difference in feeding on leaves is significant (p < 0.05): it was higher in summer and during monsoon. The feeding time on flowers was maximal (35%) in March and that on fruits and seeds was minimal (38%) in January. Langurs ate 52 plant species throughout the year. The largest number of plants (6) were species of Moraceae, and langurs spent more feeding time (20%) on them alone. The number of plants eaten per month varied significantly (p < 0.05). Langurs ate Gmelina arborea, Albizzia lucida, Ficus glomereta, and Makania micrantha throughout the year. They spent 44% of their feeding time in terminal canopies and their average feeding height was 30–35 m. This is the first study to examine the feeding ecology of capped langurs and provides baseline data for the species.  相似文献

The effect of the phenolic glycoside, salicin, on food intake of the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) was studied in a series of feeding experiments. Increasing the concentration of salicin in a diet of fruits and cereals led to significant reductions of food intake in the short term (6 days). After prolonged (20 days) exposure to salicin, food intake (19 g kg−0.75 day−1) was still reduced relative to controls (31 g kg−0.75 day−1) but not reduced to the same extent as in the short-term experiments. Nonetheless, over these 20 days, common brushtail possums regulated their intake of salicin so as not to exceed a threshold limit of 1.9 ± 0.1 g kg−0.75 day−1. Manipulative experiments sought to determine whether this threshold intake was in response to pre-ingestive factors (taste) or the post-ingestive consequences of ingesting salicin. Dietary salicin (0.17–5.0% DM) had no significant effect on nitrogen balance or urea metabolism and injection of a specific serotonin receptor antagonist, ondansetron, did not lead to increases in salicin intake as has been found for some other plant secondary metabolites. Similarly, administration of 1.3 g salicin by gavage had no significant effect on the subsequent intake of salicin compared to controls that were gavaged with water. We concluded that pre-ingestive factors were responsible for common brushtail possums limiting their intake of salicin-rich diets rather than any measurable post-ingestive consequence of feeding. Smaller guts and slow initial mass gains at stopover sites have led to the idea that digestive physiology limits refueling rates in migrating birds. We tested the digestive-limitation hypothesis in yellow-rumped warblers using food restriction to simulate infrequent feeding during migration, which may cause a reduction in alimentary tract mass. Restricted birds had small intestine, pancreas, and liver masses 18%-22% lower than ad lib.-fed controls. Total activities of sucrase, maltase, aminopeptidase, and amylase were significantly lower in restricted birds, while those of trypsin and chymotrypsin were not. Only aminopeptidase mass-specific activity was significantly lower in restricted birds. Previously restricted birds were able to feed and digest at a high rate immediately following return to ad lib. feeding. Digestive efficiency did not differ between groups. These results suggest that before migration yellow-rumped warblers have some spare digestive capacity to compensate for declines in their digestive organ masses during migration.  相似文献

Three tame, hand-reared adult roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) were fed a low-quality diet (blueberry stems) or high-quality concentrate either restricted or ad libitum in summer and winter. Total mean retention time (TMRT) and rumen retention time (RRT) were significantly longer, indigestible fill was significantly higher and apparent digestibility and intake were significantly lower when fed blueberry stems compared to concentrate. The feeding regimes of concentrate did not affect the digesta kinetic estimates, except that total fill and apprent digestibility were significantly higher when deer were fed ad libitum than when they were fed a restricted ration. TMRT was significantly longer when they were fed a restricted ration of blueberry stems than for ad libitum intake, whereas all other estimates were equal. Intake was significantly higher and TMRT and RRT were significantly shorter in summer compared to winter when they were fed concentrate. These findings support the theory that roe deer, as small-bodied concentrate selectors, are adapted to high intake, rapid turnover, and rapid digestion when fed high-quality concentrate. When fed a low-quality diet the roe deer may be limited by rumen bulk. A strategy based on increased rumen retention accompanied by increased cell-wall digestion has therefore severe limitations in roe deer. This indicates that roe deer are dependent on a selective feeding strategy to enhance winter survival.  相似文献

The triggering of transitory egg desertion in fasting and incubating blue petrels (Halobaena caerulea, nocturnal burrowing seabirds living in the subantarctic region) was investigated by continuously monitoring both body temperature (T sto) and egg temperature (T egg) with a telemetry system, and by measuring body mass (BM) loss. The birds were kept captive in their burrow and incubated day and night without any interruption; there was no day-night cycle in T sto and T egg, which averaged 39.9 °C and 32.0 °C, respectively. There was no evidence of hypothermia as a way to save energy in this fasting situation. Egg desertion occurred at night and was an abrupt and definitive phenomenon reflected by a simultaneous fall in T egg and a peak in T sto. After egg desertion, a distinct day-night cycle of body temperature was observed, T sto being 0.6 °C higher during night-time (P < 0.05), probably reflecting increased nocturnal activity. BM at egg desertion averaged 166.7 ± 3.8 g in telemetered birds and 164.4 ± 1.6 g in␣a group of free-living birds. Throughout fasting, the␣specific daily BM loss remained at 46 ± 1 g · kg−1 · day−1, but increased sharply below a critical BM of 160.0 ± 2.5 g. Thus, fasting incubating blue petrels spontaneously desert their egg when reaching a BM threshold. This BM is very close to a critical value in fasting birds and mammals that corresponds to a critical depletion of fat stores and to a shift from lipid to protein utilization. This strongly suggests that such a metabolic shift triggers behavioural changes leading to egg desertion and refeeding, which is of great relevance to the understanding of the long-term control of food intake and BM. The effect of a naturally occurring plant phenolic constituent (the acylphloroglucinol derivative, jensenone, derived from Eucalyptus jensenii) on the food intake of two folivorous marsupials, the common ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) was studied. When fed diets containing varying concentrations of jensenone, both species regulated their intake of jensenone so as not to exceed a ceiling intake. This ceiling was about twice as high for common ringtails as for common brushtails from northern Australia. Southern populations of common ringtails showed greatly reduced capacities to tolerate jensenone. When common brushtails were injected (0.5 mg · kg−0.75 body mass) with ondansetron (a selective antagonist of serotonin 5HT3 receptors), they ate significantly more jensenone than animals injected with physiological saline. The same pattern was observed when common ringtails were fed diets containing both jensenone and ondansetron (0.0035 mg · g−1 wet mass of diet). Ondansetron injection had no effect on food intake when the food did not contain jensenone while the addition of higher doses of ondansetron to diets of common ringtails very slightly reduced food intakes of a non-jensenone diet. When common brushtails were given 50 mg of jensenone by gastric lavage, their average subsequent intake of dietary jensenone matched the difference between the daily threshold and the dose given, although the response of individuals was highly variable. Lavage with water alone had no effect on subsequent jensenone intake compared with the pre-dose period. We interpret these results as evidence that the antifeedant effects of jensenone and related compounds are partly mediated by serotonin action on 5HT3 receptors most likely via “nausea” to condition a food aversion. This study was designed to examine the effects of intracerebroventricular injection of DL-AP5 (N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist) and glutamate on ghrelin-induced feeding behavior in 3-h food-deprived (FD3) broiler cockerels. At first, guide cannula was surgically implanted in the right lateral ventricle of chickens. In experiment 1, birds were intracerebroventricularly injected with 0, 2.5, 5, and 10 nmol of DL-AP5. In experiment 2, chickens received 5 nmol DL-AP5 prior to the injection of 0.6 nmol ghrelin. In experiment 3, birds were administered with 0.6 nmol ghrelin after 300 nmol glutamate, and the cumulative feed intake was determined at 3-h postinjection. The results of this study showed that the intracerebroventricular injection of DL-AP5 increased food consumption in FD3 broiler cockerels (P ≤ 0.05), and this increase occurs in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the decreased food intake induced with the intracerebroventricular injection of ghrelin was additively enhanced by pretreatment with glutamate, and this effect was attenuated by DL-AP5 administration(P ≤ 0.05).These results suggest that there is an interaction between ghrelin and glutamatergic system (through NMDA receptor) on food intake in broiler cockerels.  相似文献

Studies following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska indicated that river otters (Lontra canadensis) from oiled regions displayed symptoms of degraded health, including reduced body weight. We examined the fate of ingested oil in the digestive tract and its effects on gut function in captive river otters. Fifteen wild-caught males were assigned to three groups, two of which were given weathered crude oil in food (i.e., control, 5 ppm day−1, and 50 ppm day−1) under controlled conditions at the Alaska Sealife Center. Using glass beads as non-specific digesta markers and stable isotope analysis, we determined the effects of ingested oil on retention time and nutrient uptake. Our data indicated that oil ingestion reduced marker retention time when we controlled for activity and meal size. Fecal isotope ratios suggested that absorption of lipids in the oiled otters might have been affected by reduced retention time of food. In addition, a dilution model indicated that as much as 80% of ingested oil was not absorbed in high-dose animals. Thus, while the ingestion of large quantities of weathered crude oil appears to reduce absorption of oil hydrocarbons and may alleviate systemic effects, it may concurrently affect body condition by impacting digestive function. During energy-demanding periods of the annual cycle such as migration or during cold days in winter, birds store fat comprised mostly of 16- or 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids. In such situations, birds may feed selectively on foods with specific fatty acids that enable efficient fat deposition. We offered wild-caught yellow-rumped warblers Dendroica coronata paired choices between semi-synthetic diets that differed only in their fatty acid composition. Warblers strongly preferred diets containing long-chain (18:1; carbon atoms:double bonds) unsaturated, unesterified fatty acids to diets containing long-chain saturated, unesterified fatty acids (18:0) and they preferred diets containing mono-unsaturated fats (18:1) to diets containing poly-unsaturated fats (18:2). The preference for diets containing long-chain unsaturated fatty acids to diets containing long-chain saturated fatty acids was consistent in birds tested one week after capture at 21°C, one month after capture when cold-acclimated (1°C), and six weeks after capture at 21°C. Birds acclimated to a diet with 50% of the fat comprised of unesterified stearic acid (18:0) lost mass and reduced their food intake when we reduced ambient temperature from 21°C to 11°C over three days. We conclude that especially in energy-demanding situations there are limits to the yellow-rumped warblers' ability to assimilate some long-chain saturated fatty acids and that this digestive constraint can explain in part why yellow-rumped warblers prefer diets containing long-chain unsaturated fatty acids to diets containing long-chain saturated fatty acids.  相似文献

We investigated the occurrence of scramble competition among Colobus vellerosus at Boabeng-Fiema, Ghana. If scramble competition had an impact on feeding efficiency among females, we expected a positive relationship between group size and the proportion of time spent feeding, day journey length, or home range size assuming resource availability is similar among the groups compared. We collected focal data on the feeding behavior of adult females and males over 11 mo (September 2000–August 2001) on 2 study groups: WW (n = 31–33 individuals) and B (n = 8–16 individuals). We also collected ranging data on group movements at half-hour intervals. The large group (WW1) had a significantly longer day journey length than the small group (B1), and females in the large group spent a significantly greater proportion of time feeding in the wet season, a period of low food availability, which suggests it may be a bottleneck period when food resources are scarce and Colobus vellerosus is close to being energy limited. The proximity data suggested females may be able to reduce or adjust for competition by having fewer neighbors when they feed and by spreading out when in a larger group. However, we found no relationship between home range size and group size or that females spent a greater proportion of time feeding than adult males did. Our results highlight the need to factor in differences in food availability when investigating scramble competition. Though equivocal, our results suggest scramble competition occurs among Colobus vellerosus, leading us to suggest there was a match with the potential competitive regime, i.e., food distribution.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) and energy (E) requirements of the phyllostomid fruit bat, Artibeus jamaicensis, and the pteropodid fruit bat Rousettus aegyptiacus, were measured in adults that were fed on four experimental diets. Mean daily food intake by A. jamaicensis and R. aegyptiacus ranged from 1.1–1.6 times body mass and 0.8–1.0 times body mass, respectively. Dry matter digestibility and metabolizable E coefficient were high (81.1% and 82.4%, respectively) for A. jamaicensis and (77.5% and 78.0%, respectively) for R. aegyptiacus. Across the four diets, bats maintained constant body mass with mean metabolizable E intakes ranging from 1357.3 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 to 1767.3 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 for A. jamaicensis and 1282.6–1545.2 kJ · kg−0.75 · day−1 for R. aegyptiacus. Maintenance E costs were high, in the order of 3.6–5.4 times the basal metabolic rate (BMR). It is unlikely that the E intakes that we observed represent a true measure of maintenance E requirements. All evidence seems to indicate that fruit bats are E maximizers, ingesting more E than required and regulating storage by adjusting metabolic output. We suggest that true maintenance E requirements are substantially lower than what we observed. If it follows the eutherian norm of two times the BMR, fruit bats must necessarily over-ingest E on low-N fruit diet. Dietary E content did affect N metabolism of A. jamaicensis. On respective low- and high-E diets, metabolic fecal N were 0.492 mg N · g−1 and 0.756 mg N · g−1 dry matter intake and endogenous urinary N losses were 163.31 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1 and 71.54 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1. A. jamaicensis required 332.3 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 and 885.3 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 of total N on high- and low-E diets, respectively, and 213.7 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 of truly digestible N to achieve N balance. True N digestibilities were low (29% and 49%) for low- and high-E diets, respectively. For R. aegyptiacus, metabolic fecal N and endogenous urinary N losses were 1.27 mg N · g−1 dry matter intake and 96.0 mg N · kg−0.75 · day−1, respectively, and bats required 529.8 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 (total N) or 284.0 mg · kg−0.75 · day−1 (truly digestible N). True N digestibility was relatively low (50%). Based on direct comparison, we found no evidence that R. aegyptiacus exhibits a greater degree of specialization in digestive function and N retention than A. jamaicensis. When combined with results from previous studies, our results indicate that all fruit bats appear to be specialized in their ability to retain N when faced with low N diet. Digestive tract morphology and function of captive garden warblers (Sylvia borin) were measured during four stages of their endogenous circannual rhythm: before, during and after their autumn fattening prior to migration to wintering grounds in Africa, and after a partially simulated migratory flight. Food intake increased by 33% during fattening, utilization efficiency of dry matter tended to increase, and that of energy increased significantly (P0.01). This was because digestive tract capacity (measured as dry tissue mass) increased, so that mean retention time of food remained constant before, during and after fattening (80–84 min). After a 48-h period of starvation of fattened birds to partially simulate a migratory flight, food intake was lower on the first day of refeeding than on the next 4 days, and utilization efficiency was higher on that day, at least partly because of a longer mean retention time (111 min versus 78 min on the third day). Digestive tract dry tissue mass fell by 50% during starvation, and that of the small intestine by 63%. It is concluded that the garden warbler adapts to long-distance migration without feeding by rapidly reducing the size of its digestive tract, an expensive tissue to maintain, during migration in order to save weight and energy, and possibly also to supply part of the fuel and protein required for the flight. The cost of this strategy appears to be the time taken to rebuild the gut at stopover sites with food, but the low probability of finding such a site in the Sahara Desert means that this strategy is probably optimal for garden warblers.  相似文献

We hypothesized that increased feeding frequency in captive harbor seals would increase nutrient loads and thus reduce retention time and the digestive efficiency of natural prey. We measured daily feed intake and excretion during 6 feeding trials and fed herring (49% lipid), pollock (22% lipid) or an equal mix of each diet over 24 months. Animals were accustomed to feeding at either high or low frequency. Body mass and intake did not vary with season. Although mean retention times were similar between diets and feeding frequencies, solute and particulate digesta markers separated at high feeding frequency. Consistent dry matter digestibility resulted in greater gut fill from pollock than from herring. Digestible energy intakes from pollock were approximately 25% greater than from either herring or the mixed diet. Lipid digestibility of herring declined from 90% to 50% when lipid intake exceeded 60 g kg–0.75 day–1. Our hypothesis of a trade-off between intake and digestion was not supported for protein but was supported for lipid. Results of this study imply that a flexible digestive system for harbor seals can compensate for ingesting prey of lower energy density by increasing gut fill and enhancing protein and lipid assimilation, to sustain digestible energy intake.Abbreviations DM dry matter - DEI digestible energy intake - DIT diet-induced thermogenesis - FF feeding frequency - MRT mean retention time Communicated by: G. We examined the spatial and temporal distribution of the foods of ursine colobus (Colobus vellerosus) at Boabeng-Fiema, Ghana as a means to predict the monopolizablity and usurpability of their food resources. Recent evidence suggests that food may not be limiting for folivorous primates, and that male sexual coercion may be a more important influence on folivore social organization. To address the question, we collected focal data on the feeding behavior of adult females and males over 11 mo (September 2000-August 2001) on 2 groups: WW (n = 31–33 individuals) and B (n = 8–16 individuals). We also conducted phenological monitoring and a tree survey of the two-group home ranges to establish food availability and distribution. We used 2 behavioral or organism-defined indicators of feeding behavior to assess potential resource contestability: food site residence time and distance moved between food sites. The colobus fed on a high diversity of species, most of their food trees were not clumped in distribution, within-tree interfood distances were short, and food trees were large. The only condition associated with the potential for monopolization was low food tree density. However, low food tree density may be offset by the colobus’ use of large trees. Taken together, the ecological and behavioral indicators suggest the food resources of Colobus vellerosus had a low potential for monopolization. Our results also indicate mature leaves had the longest food site residence time, which may suggest they should be the most usurpable plant part, though their presumed low quality and high abundance probably counteracted the effect. The pattern implied the potential for direct feeding competition among Colobus vellerosus at Boabeng-Fiema was low and agonistic interactions over food are not expected. Instead, a group size effect on feeding efficiency should be a more predominant influence on feeding efficiency, if food is limiting for the species.  相似文献

We analysed data on the arrival dates of four species of leaf warbler (genus Phylloscopus) collected in Tatarstan between 1957 and 2004. There was no evidence over the whole period that the warblers returned to their breeding sites significantly earlier, mainly because local temperatures for April and May, months when the majority of birds arrived from their wintering grounds, did not increase significantly. However, arrival dates of two species (Chiffchaff P. collybita and Willow warbler P.trochilus) were strongly related to local temperature in April, and that of Greenish warbler P. trochiloides to that in May. As expected, arrival dates for the three species wintering in Africa (Chiffchaff, Willow and Wood warblers P. sibilatrix) correlated positively with one another (P < 0.01 in all cases), but were not correlated with arrival dates of Greenish warbler (P > 0.5 in all cases), a species wintering in the Indian sub-continent.  相似文献

Long-distance migration in birds is characterized physiologically by periods of rapid fattening and lipogenesis, and increased desaturation of fatty acids stored in adipose tissue. We investigated seasonal, age- and sex-related differences in activities of two lipogenic enzymes, fatty acid synthase and Δ9-desaturase, in relation to migration in the small, Arctic-nesting western sandpiper (Calidris mauri). Migration, and associated lipogenesis and fattening, involved marked upregulation of these enzymes in this species. However, this increase in enzyme activity was only seen in actively migrating birds during spring migration, when fatty acid synthase and Δ9-desaturase levels increased by 53% and 113%, respectively, compared to non-migrating birds. There was no change in fatty acid synthase enzyme activity during the premigration period, even though body mass of adult birds increased significantly during this period. Similarly, there was no increase in Δ9-desaturase activity during premigration, despite the fact that birds increase the proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids in their fat stores at this time. We suggest that upregulation of lipogenic enzymes is required to support high rates of mass gain (0.4 g day−1) during short (1–4 day) periods at stop-over sites. However, slower rates of mass gain (0.09 g day−1) over several weeks prior to migration can be achieved without any increase in tissue-specific enzyme activity. Accepted: 29 November 1999  相似文献

Traditional approaches to the question of the effects of plant secondary metabolites on the feeding choices of folivores of Eucalyptus have focused on the tree species level, although numerous field studies of foraging behaviour have identified selection at the level of the individual trees. Attempts to relate these decisions to deterrency resulting from secondary leaf chemistry have been inconclusive because assays used have focused on broad groups of compounds such as “total” phenolics. In this study we have conducted no-choice feeding trials with two arboreal mammalian folivores, the common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), to measure deterrency of individual trees of two species of Eucalyptus, E. ovata and E. viminalis. Average daily intakes of E. ovata foliage by common ringtail possums ranged from 2.5 to 50 g kg−0.75 body mass. Koala intakes of foliage from the same individual trees ranged from 22.4 to 36.3 g kg−0.75 body mass. When fed foliage from different individual E. viminalis trees, common ringtail possums ate between 1.26 and 6.28 g kg−0.75 body mass while koalas ate from 14.3 to 45.9 g kg−0.75 body mass. Correlative analyses showed no relationships between feeding and several measures of nutritional quality, nor with total phenolics or condensed tannins. They did, however, identify two groups of plant secondary metabolites that may cause deterrency: terpenes, and a defined group of phenolic compounds, the diformylphloroglucinols (DFPs). Further bioassay experiments with common ringtail possums showed that only the DFPs could cause the effects seen with the foliage experiments at concentrations similar to those found in the leaves. We argue that, when in sufficiently high concentrations, DFPs determine the level of food intake by these animals irrespective of other questions of nutritional quality of the leaves. The recombinant Pichia pastoris harboring an improved methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) shuffled gene was employed to biosynthesize S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM). Two l-methionine (l-Met) addition strategies were used to supply the precursor: the batch addition strategy (l-Met was added separately at three time points) and the continuous feeding strategies (l-Met was fed continuously at the rate of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 g l−1 h−1, respectively). SAM accumulation, l-Met conversion rate, and SAM productivity with the continuous feeding strategies were all improved over the batch addition strategy, which reached 8.46 ± 0.31 g l−1, 41.7 ± 1.4%, and 0.18 ± 0.01 g l−1 h−1 with the best continuous feeding strategy (0.2 g l−1 h−1), respectively. The bottleneck for SAM production with the low l-Met feeding rate (0.1 g L−1 h−1) was the insufficient l-Met supply. The analysis of the key enzyme activities indicated that the tricarboxylic acid cycle and glycolytic pathway were reduced with the increasing l-Met feeding rate, which decreased the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. The MAT activity also decreased as the l-Met feeding rate rose. The reduced ATP synthesis and MAT activity were probably the reason for the low SAM accumulation when the l-Met feeding rate reached 0.5 g l−1 h−1.  相似文献

Effects of different periods of exposure to hot environments on rumen function, diet digestibility and digesta passage rate were studied in four adult not-pregnant Sardinian ewes housed in a climatic chamber. The ewes were kept in individual metabolic cages. The trial lasted 83 days; 17 days were spent under thermal comfort conditions (TC) [temperature-humidity index (THI) = 65.0 ± 2.0], followed by 49 days under elevated THI (ETHI: THI = 82.0 ± 2.5) and 17 days under thermal comfort (TC; THI = 65.0 ± 1.0). Five digestibility and passage rate trials were carried out during the 83 days. Trials 1 and 5 were carried out under TC; trials 2, 3 and 4 were carried out under ETHI. Values of rectal temperatures (39.7 ± 0.3°C) and respiratory rate (118.4 ± 31.8 breaths/min) indicated that sheep under ETHI were heat-stressed. Heat stress caused an increase (P < 0.01) in water intake, and reductions (P < 0.05) in dry matter intake, rumen pH, rumen cellulolytic and amylolytic bacteria count, rumen osmolarity, organic matter, dry matter, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and non-structural carbohydrates digestibility coefficients, and a reduction of digesta passage rates. Under ETHI, diet digestibility and passage rate of digesta were reduced in a time-dependent fashion. Variation of diet digestibility under ETHI was not related to passage rate of digesta and feed intake. Reduction of cellulolytic and amylolytic bacteria and the adaptive response to hot environment seem to be related to alteration of digestibility observed in ewes chronically exposed to hot environment.  相似文献
