Cordylophora caspia is a hydrozoan which causes biofouling in power plants and is an increasing problem in UK drinking water treatment works. Thermal control is not usually feasible without a ready source of hot water so laboratory experiments were conducted to assess whether using pulsed doses of chlorine is an alternative solution. C. caspia polyps disintegrated after a single 20 min dose (the length of one backwash cycle in water treatment work filter beds) of 2.5 ppm chlorine. Without further treatment colonies regenerated within 3 days, but repeated dosing with chlorine for 20 min each day inhibited this regeneration. The resistance of surviving colonies to chlorine increased over time, although colony size and polyp regeneration continued to fall. These results suggest pulsed treatment with chlorinated backwashes at 2 ppm could be used to control C. caspia biofouling in rapid gravity filters and this may have relevance to other settings where thermal control is not feasible.  相似文献

Climate change and invasive species can both have negative impacts on native species diversity. Additionally, climate change has the potential to favor invasive species over natives, dealing a double blow to native biodiversity. It is, therefore, vital to determine how changing climate conditions are directly linked to demographic rates and population growth of non-native species so we can quantitatively evaluate how invasive populations may be affected by changing conditions and, in turn, impact native species. Cordylophora caspia, a hydrozoan from the Ponto-Caspian region, has become established in the brackish water habitats of the San Francisco Estuary (SFE). We conducted laboratory experiments to study how temperature and salinity affect C. caspia population growth rates, in order to predict possible responses to climate change. C. Caspia population growth increased nonlinearly with temperature and leveled off at a maximum growth rate near the annual maximum temperature predicted under a conservative climate change scenario. Increasing salinity, however, did not influence growth rates. Our results indicate that C. caspia populations in the SFE will benefit from predicted regional warming trends and be little affected by changes in salinity. The population of C. caspia in the SFE has the potential to thrive under future climate conditions and may subsequently increase its negative impact on the food web.  相似文献

Reproductive strategy can play a significant role in invasion success and spread. Asexual and sexual reproduction may confer different advantages and disadvantages to a founding population, resulting in varying impacts on genetic diversity and the ability to invade. We investigate the role of reproductive mode in two species of non-native hydromedusae (Maeotias marginata and Moerisia sp.) in the San Francisco Estuary (SFE). Both species can reproduce asexually and sexually. We employed 7?C8 microsatellite markers to determine overall genetic diversity and to investigate contributions of asexual and sexual reproduction to the populations. We found both species had high levels of genetic diversity (Average HE?=?0.63 and 0.58, Number individuals sampled?=?111 and 277, for M. marginata and Moerisia sp. respectively) but also detected multiple individuals in clonal lineages. We identified the same clones across sampling locations and time, and the index of asexual reproduction (R) was 0.89 for M. marginata and 0.91 for Moerisia sp. Our results suggest both species maintain high population genetic diversity through sexual reproduction, in combination with asexual reproduction, which allows rapid propagation. In addition, we conducted genetic sequence analyses at the ribosomal ITS1 marker, using samples of Moerisia sp. from the SFE and M. lyonsi from Chesapeake Bay. We found 100?% sequence similarity showing that Moerisia sp. in the SFE and Chesapeake Bay are the same species. The two hydromedusae studied here possess the means to propagate rapidly and have high genetic diversity, both of which may allow them to successfully adapt to changing environments and expand their invasions.  相似文献

A population of Cordylophora caspia was studied during a number of years in interconnected waters of different salinity and pollution. The distribution pattern of the colonies is only partly accounted for by these properties of the water. The hydrozoan Cordylophora caspia, with its origin in the Caspian and Black Seas, is considered an invasive biofouling species to power stations and water treatment plants in Brazil, causing economic and ecological impacts. Tolerance of the species to variation in pH was tested to evaluate its resistance to acidic and basic pH levels. Values of pH were tested over a range from 4.0 to 10.0. The colonies were exposed for 6 h to each treatment, using phosphoric acid and NaOH to set water pH to the desired acidic or basic levels, respectively. Colonies of C. caspia displayed 100% mortality only at pH 4 and 10, and showed high survival rates (>50%) within the pH range of 5.0–8.5. The species demonstrated tolerance to a wide range of pH levels, and the results will help in the development of techniques to reduce biofouling by this species. Treatments that keep the pH below 5 or above 8.5 for at least 6 h are suggested to control and eradicate C. caspia where fouling causes significant economic impacts.  相似文献

Cnidaria species that were earlier unknown in the waterbodies of Saratov oblast have been found in this region in the last decade. Colonies of Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771) were found on stems of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. in the basin cooler of the Balakovo nuclear power plant (Saratov water reservoir), while the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankaster, 1880 was found in the Saratovka River (Volgograd water reservoir). It is possible that these species penetrate into waterbodies with foreign plants or are introduced by birds. Another possibility is that their discovery is due to a more thorough examination of the waterbodies’ biota.  相似文献

The shimofuri goby (Tridentiger bifasciatus), which is native to Asian estuaries, was recently introduced to the San Francisco Estuary, California, USA. We conducted gut content analyses to examine the gobys feeding ecology in this highly invaded estuary. Shimofuri gobies were generalist predators on benthic invertebrates, consuming seasonally abundant prey, especially amphipods (Corophium spp.). In addition, shimofuri goby utilized two novel prey items not exploited by other resident fishes – hydroids (Cordylophora caspia) and barnacle (Balanus improvisus) cirri, both of which are alien. The shimofuri gobys feeding ecology appears well-suited to the fluctuating environment of the San Francisco Estuary and may partially explain observed increases in shimofuri goby abundance compared with declines in populations of some native species.  相似文献

The transfer of metals from contaminated sediments to algal cell walls (Scenedesmus quadricauda) and organisms from various trophic levels (euryhaline osmoconform hydroid Cordylophora caspia and algae Brachiomonas submarina) was studied with a multichamber device. The system consists of a central chamber which contained the mud suspension and six external chambers containing the different biological indicators. The solids in the central and external chambers are separated by 0.45 m-diameter membranes which allow diffusion of the mobilized, dissolved metal compounds. Experiments were performed with dredged sediments at various salinities (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 percent, respectively) and the kinetic of re-adsorption was obtained by taking samples after different time intervals. High enrichment of Cd was found in the living alga Brachiomonas submarina, but on the other side only a weak influence of salinity on re-adsorption could be observed. Model experiments with ionic Cd showed a clear dependency on Cd-sorption on the algae, Cd-concentration in solution, and salinity. These results indicate that the transfer of metals mainly depends on the specific surface properties of the substrates and on the specific chemical form of the dissolved mobilized metal.  相似文献

Summary There are about 335 species belonging to the autochthonous Caspian complex and dwelling in the basin of the Caspian, Black, and Asov seas.Not less than 22 species of this complex are known at present beyond the boundaries of the Ponto-Caspian basin. Most of them (15 species) have emigrated from this basin recently. Some fishes and two invertebrates penetrated into the Mediterranean or even into the oceans via the seas. Other species penetrated into fresh waters of the basin of the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic ocean (and partly of the Arctic seas) doubtless via the natural or artificial( canals) connections between the river-systems of adjacent basins.Remarkably the caspian species which immigrated into the Baltic basin turn out to be very viable, develop in great quantities and depress even some indigenous species. As some of them appeared in the Baltic basin during the last decades and the process of spreading of the Caspian fauna goes on, the intrusion of some more Caspian species may be awaited.There are, however, 6 or 7 species of Caspian origin, dwelling in isolated lakes of Asia Minor or the Balkan peninsula, probably relicts of the ancient (Tertiary?) transgressions of the Pont, what is confirmed by their taxonomic differentiation.Only two Caspian species reached the western hemisphere till now (Cordylophora caspia, Victorella pavida).
Zusammenfassung Im Bassin der Kaspischen, Schwarzen und Asowschen Meere leben ca. 335 dem autochthonen Kaspischen Komplex angehörende Arten.Zur Zeit sind nicht weniger als 22 Arten dieses kaspischen Komplexes ausserhalb der Grenzen des Pontokaspischen Bassins bekannt. Von ihnen sind 15 Arten in der allerletzten Zeit aus diesem Bassin ausgewandert. Einige Fischarten und zwei Wirbellose sind auf Seewegen in das Mittelmeer oder sogar in Ozeane gelangt. Andere Arten sind in die Süsswasser des Baltischen und Atlantischen (teilweise auch des Arktischen) Bassins zweifellos mittels der natürlichen oder künstlichen (Kanäle) Verbindungen zwischen den Flussystemen eingedrungen.Merkwürdigerweise erweisen sich die ins Baltische Bassin eingedrungenen kaspischen Arten als sehr lebensfähig, vermehren sich in grosser Anzahl und verdrängen sogar einige einheimische Tierarten. Da einige von ihnen im Baltischen Bassin erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten erschienen sind und da die Verbreitung der kaspischen Fauna sich immer weiter erstreckt, sind weitere Invasionen neuer kaspischer Arten zu erwarten.Es gibt aber 6–7 Arten kaspischer Herkunft, die in isolierten Seen Kleinasiens und der Balkanhalbinsel wohnen und wahrscheinlich den Relikten der älteren (tertiären?) Transgressionen des Pont zuzuzählen sind, was auch durch ihre taxonomische Absonderung ersichtlich ist.Nur zwei kaspische Arten (Cordylophora caspia, Victorella pavida) haben bisher die westliche Halbkugel erreicht.

Growth and reproduction of the colonial hydroidCordylophora caspia were monitored during the breeding season in natural conditions. In 1987, a life history study was carried out on the upright stems of the main stolon. Mean size of uprights varied cyclically. The first peak coincided with the peak number of sexual hydranths, after which the mean upright length decreased, possibly indicating somatic costs of sexual reproduction. Extrinsic factors like flooding may also have contributed to cyclical changes in upright size. In 1988 and 1989, colonies were reared on experimental plates in the estuary. In 1988, colonies grew until mid July, after which they regressed to a dormant condition and then started growing again in mid August. Predation and space competition are discussed as possible causes for this dormancy in the middle of the growing season. In 1989, colonies grew continually, with the exception of a decline in colony biomass and number of feeding hydranths at the end of July, just following the peak of sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction started in the early stages of colonial development for all years. During early summer,C. caspia allocated resources simultaneously in colonial growth and sexual reproduction. However, sexual reproduction had a clear peak in mid summer, and thereafter sexual reproduction ceased while colonial growth continued.  相似文献

Habitat modification (i.e., disturbance) and resource availability have been identified as possible mechanisms that may influence the invasibility of plant communities. In the Mojave Desert, habitat disturbance has increased dramatically over the last 50 years due to increased human activities. Additionally, water availability is considered to be a main limiting resource for plant production. To elucidate the effects of soil disturbance and water availability on plant invasions, we created experimental patches where we varied the levels of soil disturbance and water availability in a fully crossed factorial experiment at five replicated field sites, and documented responses of native and non-native winter annuals. The treatments did not significantly affect the density (seedlings m−2) of the non-native forb, Brassica tournefortii. However, the relationship between silique production and plant height differed among treatments, with greater silique production in disturbed plots. In contrast to Brassica, density of the non-native Schismus spp. increased in soil disturbed and watered plots, and was greatest in disturbed plots during 2009 (the second year of the study). Species composition of the native annual community was not affected by treatments in 2008 but was influenced by treatments in 2009. The native forb Eriophyllum sp. was most dense on water-addition plots, while density of Chaenactis freemontii was highest in disturbed plots. Results illustrate that habitat invasibility in arid systems can be influenced by dynamics in disturbance regimes and water availability, and suggest that invasiveness can differ between non-native annual species and among native annuals in habitats undergoing changing disturbance and precipitation regimes. Understanding the mechanistic relationships between water availability and non-native plant responses will be important for understanding the effects of shifting precipitation and vegetation patterns under predicted climate change in arid ecosystems.  相似文献

The effects of the lampricide, TFM, on the benthic macroinvertebrates in the Rouge River, a hardwater tributary to Lake Ontario was examined at 1 untreated and 2 treated sites over a 7 month period. Drift samples were collected from one one of the treated sites during the 5 days bracketing treatment. Significant decreases in relative abundance attributable to TFM were recorded for Chimarra sp., Dugesia sp. and Tubificoidea 2–19 d following treatment. Large reductions were also exhibited by Caenis sp. and Lumbricidae. Two-thirds of the Chironomidae genera and Nematoda tended to decline in abundance 2 d after treatment at only one of the treated sites, probably due to a 2.5 h longer treatment. This decline was followed by a significant increase to greater than pretreatment abundances 17 d later undoubtedly as a result of an upward migration of macroinvertebrates from within the hyporheos. Partial recolonization of the TFM-sensitive benthic taxa was evident 19 d after lampricide treatment with complete recolonization 6.5 months later. With the exception of Caenis sp. those taxa in the present study found to be TFM-sensitive were in accordance with those found in softwater field studies. Chimarra sp., Dugesia sp., Hemerodromia sp., Lumbricidae and Tubificoidea exhibited substantial increases in drift abundance resulting from TFM treatment. Generally drift abundance of the taxa returned to pretreatment levels within 12 h following the completion of treatment. The drift abundance of Chimarra sp. and Dugesia sp. remained above normal throughout the rest of the sampling period likely due to continued irritation or mortalities induced by the presence of TFM in the substrate. Generally, drift was a good indicator of those taxa likely to experience a decline in abundance as a result of TFM treatment.  相似文献

Plant‐associated bacteria can have beneficial effects on the growth and health of their host. Nevertheless, the role of endophytic bacteria present in seeds has not been investigated in depth. In this study, the cultivable endophytic population of seeds from Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to 2 μm cadmium for several generations (Cd seeds) was compared with a population isolated from seeds of plants that were never exposed to Cd (control seeds). We observed obvious differences between the two types of seed concerning genera present and phenotypic characteristics of the different isolates. Sinorhizobium sp. and Micrococcus sp. were only found in control seeds, while Pseudomonas sp., Bosea sp. and Paenibacillus sp. were only found in Cd seeds. Sphingomonas sp., Rhizobium sp., Acidovorax sp., Variovorax sp., Methylobacterium sp., Bacillus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. occurred in varying numbers in both types of seed. Metal tolerance and 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylate deaminase activity were predominantly found in strains isolated from Cd seeds, while the production of siderophores, indole‐3‐acetic acid and organic acids was more prevalent in endophytes isolated from control seeds. These data support the hypothesis that certain endophytes are selected for transfer to the next generation and that their presence might be important for subsequent germination and early seedling development.  相似文献

Oysters, Crassostrea virginica, from two populations, one from a coastal pond experiencing repeated dinoflagellate blooms (native), and the other from another site where blooms have not been observed (non-native), were analyzed for cellular immune system profiles before and during natural and simulated (by adding cultured algae to natural plankton) blooms of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum. Significant differences in hemocytes between the two oyster populations, before and after the blooms, were found with ANOVA, principal components analysis (PCA) and ANOVA applied to PCA components. Stress associated with blooms of P. minimum included an increase in hemocyte number, especially granulocytes and small granulocytes, and an increase in phagocytosis associated with a decrease in aggregation and mortality of the hemocytes, as compared with oysters in pre-bloom analyses. Non-native oysters constitutively had a hemocyte profile more similar to that induced by P. minimum than that of native oysters, but this profile did not impart increased resistance. The effect of P. minimum on respiratory burst was different according to the origin of the oysters, with the dinoflagellate causing a 35% increase in the respiratory burst of the native oysters but having no effect on that of the non-native oysters. Increased respiratory burst in hemocytes of native oysters exposed to P. minimum in both simulated and natural blooms may represent an adaptation to annual blooms whereby surviving native oysters protect themselves against tissue damage from ingested P. minimum.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for six spined loach species from Iran. Data were collected between 2010 and 2015. These represent the first reports of length–weight data for five of the species (Cobitis avicennae, Cobitis faridpaki, Cobitis keyvani, Sabanejewia aurata and Sabanejewia caspia) while also providing additional data on the remaining species (Cobitis linea). Five of these species are endemic and the remaining S. caspia, is native to the country. Estimated b values obtained for the studied species ranged from 2.381 for S. aurata to 3.411 for C. keyvani.  相似文献

Invasive species trigger biodiversity losses and alter ecosystem functioning, with life history shaping invasiveness (Sakai et al., Annu Rev Ecol Syst 32:305–332, 2001). However, pinpointing the relation of a specific life history to invasion success is difficult. One approach may be comparing congeners. The two Palearctic pavement ants, Tetramorium sp.E (widely known as T. caespitum, Schlick-Steiner et al., Mol Phylogenet Evol 40:259–273, 2006) and T. tsushimae have invaded North America (Steiner et al., Biol Invasions 8:117–123, 2006). Their life histories differ in that T. sp.E has separate single-queened colonies but T. tsushimae multi-queened colonies scattered over large areas (Sanada-Morimura et al., Insect Soc 53:141–148, 2006; Schlick-Steiner et al., Mol Phylogenet Evol 40:259–273, 2006; Steiner et al., Biol Invasions 8:117–123, 2006). Comparison of the genetic diversity in the entire native and non-native ranges will elucidate the invasion histories. Fig wasps associated with Ficus glaberrima were investigated in Xishuangbanna, China. A total of 97 figs from the same sample tree were collected over a period of three years, and 5171 fig wasps were recorded. Our results showed that Eupristina sp. progeny was not correlated with seeds in the three years. D. bizarrea only negatively affected Eupristina sp. and there was no obvious negative effect of D. bizarrea on seeds. The colonization rate of Eupristina sp. in December 2006 (dry season) was highest, while the colonization rate of D. bizarrea in August 2007 (rainy season) was highest. The colonization rates of Eupristina sp. and D. bizarrea were almost equal in December 2006 and July 2008 (rainy season). The number of Eupristina sp. progeny per fig during the colder month (December 2006) was significantly higher than during the warmer month (August 2007; July 2008) (LSD: P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the number of D. bizarrea progeny during three years. Eupristina sp., D. bizarrea, Sycoscapter sp., and Philotrypesis sp. occurred consistently as the most common fig wasps every year. This result suggested that some fig wasps showed a certain degree of season recurrence or specificity, but that the composition of fig wasps was not conspicuously influenced by the seasonal factor.  相似文献

Spore formulations of the bioherbicidal fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. aeschynomene (ATCC No. 20358) (CGA) were evaluated for control of three weed species: northern jointvetch (Aeschynomene virginica), Indian jointvetch (A. indica), and hemp sesbania (Sesbania exaltata) in greenhouse experiments. Mortality, dry weight reduction, and plant height reduction of A. virginica seedlings ranged from 98% to 100%, 15 days after inoculation with CGA in water, in an invert emulsion, or in Silwet L-77 surfactant. However, CGA in water caused no effects of these parameters on S. exaltata, and only slight effects on A. indica. A. indica and S. exaltata were also severely injured (mortality, dry weight and plant height reduction, 98–100%) by CGA in the invert emulsion or in Silwet L-77. The CGA in Silwet formulation incited severe disease development more rapidly than the invert emulsion or water formulations of CGA in all species. These results suggest that the host range of CGA can be expanded though formulation modification to enable this bioherbicide to control multiple weeds, thus making this product more economically acceptable.  相似文献

The polyp (scyphistoma) of the jellyfish Cassiopea sp. can be maintained in culture for a long time, as polyps repeatedly reproduce asexually via formation of vegetative buds or propagules. The medusa, which is the sexually reproducing stage, typically has a relatively short life span. As a first step to understand the difference in life spans of the polyp and medusa stages of Cassiopea sp., we measured telomerase activity in different life cycle stages. We found telomerase activity in tissues of aposymbiotic polyps and propagules and symbiotic ephyrae (newly budded medusae) and adult medusae. No significant difference in telomerase activity was found between polyps and the bell region of the medusae. The cloned elongation products of the stretch PCR contained the TTAGGG repeats suggesting that the jellyfish has the ‘vertebrate’ telomere motif (TTAGGG)n. This is the first study to show that somatic tissues of both polyp and medusa stages of a cnidarian had telomerase activity. Telomerase activity in somatic tissues may be related to the presence of multipotent interstitial cells and high regenerative capacity of cnidarians.  相似文献
