Simocephalus vetulus (O. F. Müller) is coloured by carotenoids, which may befree in globules in the gut wall and fat body, or associated with proteins in the cytoplasm of the fat cells, carapace epidermis, ovary and eggs. A green carotenoprotein is foundin the blood. The transfer of carotenoids from one tissue to another is described; these pigments can be excreted via the gut in fully developed embryos. An intermoult cycle, related to egg laying is shown to cause variation in the pigmentation of the fat cells, carapace and blood.  相似文献

We discuss the energetics of a cladoceran, Simocephalus vetulus at different temperatures (8.0 ± 1.0, 15.0 ± 1.0, 21.0 ± 1.0 and 28.0 ± 1.0 °C) and food (Chlamydomonas sp.) concentrations (25 × 103, 50 × 103, 75 × 103 and 100 × 103 cells ml−1). Increase in temperature accelerated ingestion and, to some extent, oxygen consumption. The study revealed a high reproduction efficiency in S. vetulus. Net growth efficiency (ECI) was higher (13.17–41.18%) in pre-adults than in adults (2.71–8.40%). The assimilated energy (A) increased with increasing food concentration at all temperatures. Assimilation efficiency (AD) decreased with increasing food concentrations. The energy used for growth (P) was nearly constant at all food levels because the egested energy increased and assimilation efficiency decreased as food concentration increased.  相似文献

A series of 15 samples of house sparrows taken in the East Midlands of England were screened for 14 variable and 9 invariable enzyme loci. The gene frequency data were analysed both for heterozygosity and genetic identity using Nei's and Roger's statistics. There is a cline in heterozygosity northwards across the region, and populations are closely similar. The differentiation observed is very close to that expected for a continuously distributed species with a neighbourhood area of 8.9 km2 and effective population size of 999.6.  相似文献

Simocephalus vetulus is a large (2.0–4.0 mm at maturity) cladoceran often found in the littoral region of lakes and ponds, and capable of moderate growth rates even on poor‐quality cyanobacterial diets. It frequently co‐occurs with fishes and similar sized ostracods such as Heterocypris incongruens, but little is known of its response to fish kairomones or its interactions with potential competitors. We studied the demographic responses of S. vetulus fed the green alga Scenedesmus acutus, Microcystis cf. aeruginosa strain A, Microcystis cf. aeruginosa strain B, or Limnothrix sp. Experiments were conducted separately and together in the presence of Heterocypris incongruens and cichlid fish (Oreochromis) kairomones. A diet of Limnothrix sp. resulted in the lowest population growth rate (0.21±0.023 d?1), while on diets of S. acutus or Microcystis, population growth was higher (0.30±0.009 d?1). The presence of ostracods resulted in significantly higher growth rates of S. vetulus fed Limnothrix (0.33±0.01 d?1), but not Microcystis or S. acutus. Regardless of the diet, the presence of fish kairomones resulted in significantly higher growth rates as compared with controls, particularly when ostracods were also present. Coexistence with ostracods may be beneficial to S. vetulus, particularly when food quality is poor.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Two populations of Daphnia pulex , one from a permanent pond and one from a temporary pond, and two temporary pond populations of Daphnia obtusa in the East Midlands of Britain were examined by enzyme electrophoresis. The three temporary pond populations showed good fits to Hardy-Weinberg expectations, suggestive of cyclic parthenogenesis, while the permanent pond population showed deviations bordering on statistical significance.
2. Laboratory characterization of the ephippiai offspring of heterozy-gous mothers from each population showed normal Mendelian segregation and males were produced. This indicates that in both species ephippiai egg production was a sexual process, and confirms that these populations reproduce by cyclic, rather than obligate, parthenogenesis.  相似文献

The presumption of intercontinental distributions of many species of Anomopoda has been reinforced by their considerable morphological uniformity and ease of passive dispersal via ephippial eggs. To test the validity of this dogma, genetic variation among taxa in the cladoceran genus Simocephalus was examined on a continental scale. Genetic variability (percentage polymorphic loci = 8.8%, individual heterozygosity = 3.4%) was comparable to that determined on a local scale in Simocephalus and somewhat less than for other zooplankton groups. Four species complexes were distinguished allozymically with unique allelic substitutions found for at least two loci between these taxa. Eight species in North America were differentiated within these complexes (Nei s genetic distance, D>0.30), all of which were clearly separated from two European species. Both S. cf. vetulus and S. cf. serrulatus are broadly distributed in North America, and intraspecific divergence is relatively low. In contrast, S. cf. congener and S. cf. exspinosus represent species complexes, both consisting of several species, differentiated allozymically and morphologically. The concept of generalist species with moderate genetic variation throughout a broad range and specialist species, genetically depauperate, with restricted distributions, is explored.  相似文献

Allozymes and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) sequences were analysed to determine whether populations of the western North American gastropod Tryonia porrecta (from California, Nevada, Utah, and northwest Mexico) are strongly differentiated in accordance with traditional interpretation of regional fauna as ancient relicts inhabiting isolated fragments of late Tertiary palaeodrainages. These data were also used to assess whether this species, for which males have not been recorded, is a rare example of a molluscan parthenogen. Both data sets strongly supported monophyly of T. porrecta populations. Five of the nine sampled populations consisted of a single monoallelic allozyme genotype while the others contained two to 10 distinct genotypes. Allozymic data for genetically diverse Utah populations provided evidence of clonal and sexual reproduction. mtCOI haplotypes of T. porrecta formed two subgroups which differed by 1.99-2.60%. The common haplotype was found in seven populations with rare haplotypes observed in single populations. Based on these results and an available mtCOI molecular clock for related hydrobiid snails, T. porrecta is interpreted as a primarily parthenogenetic species that undergoes occasional sexual reproduction and has accumulated substantial diversity following its mid-Pliocene to mid-Pleistocene origin. Our results also suggest that the distribution of present-day populations of these gill-breathing snails did not result from fragmentation of an ancient, well-integrated drainage but instead reflects overland colonization of habitats which only recently became available following desiccation of late Quaternary pluvial lakes.  相似文献

Faunistic complexes of 155 species of the Cladocera found in Eastern Siberia and the Far East of Russian Federation are described. The eight complexes are specified: unrevised widely spread species (51), the widespread Eurasian faunistic complex (34 species), the circumpolar complex (4 species), the East Asian and American (Beringian) complex (8 species), the endemic East Asian complex (19 species), the southern thermophilic complex (12 species), the mountainous endemic complex (3 species), and the Baikal endemic complex (8 species). Directions for further studies are suggested. Faunistic investigations of the modern level in the East Palearctic represent an independent task, which should be accomplished by taxonomists in close cooperation with specialists on local faunas.  相似文献

We used RAPDs (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) to test genetic divergence between two populations of Bosmina spp. in Lake Östersjön, Sweden. Previous taxonomic studies on European species within the genus Bosmina have been based on morphological characters alone. RAPD markers distinguished the two populations and supported the specific status of B. coregoni and B. longispina based on morphological characters. Furthermore, juveniles with a long antennule and a mucro were classified as B. coregoni. RAPDs also revealed genetic differences among the tested individuals, suggesting several clones within each species.  相似文献

Previously, a series of Simocephalus taxa (Cladocera: Daphniidae) from China were described. Most were proposed to be junior synonyms in the last revision of the genus. Using original material from China and data from GenBank, we investigate the biodiversity and phylogeny of Simocephalus using sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and the nuclear 18S genes. In both cases, neighbor-joining, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses led to highly congruent tree topologies. The grouping of the deeper clades agrees with the inter-generic classification of Orlova-Bienkowskaja (2001). Only the populations of S. serrulatus from Eurasia and North America seem to be closely related, and there are no other shared species between the two continents. Our study unambiguously confirms the existence of many lineages from the subgenera of Simocephalus (Echinocaudus) and Simocephalus s.str. in China, but their morphology needs to be reexamined by taking a wider range of characters (e.g., of female thoracic limbs and adult males) into consideration.  相似文献

Two new species of the genus Diaphanosoma, D. oligosetum and D. dorotheae, from Louisiana and North Carolina respectively, are described. The former species has large head with protruding dorsal part, large lanceolate spine on the basipodite's distal outer end, an extremely reduced number of antennal setae, up to six in adult specimens, and unique armament of valve margin. On the whole, it shows the pronounced combination of primitive and specialized morphological traits. D. dorotheae is a member of D. brachyurum species group differing from its other known representatives in presence of a small but very conspicuous spine on the end of proximal segment of antennal exopodite and a variable number of setae (seven or eight) on the distal segment of the branch.   • 1 Holopedium gibberum, from twenty lakes in Rhode Island and Maine, were examined for allozyme variation at five loci to determine the pattern and degree of generic variation among sites and the genetic structure within individual lakes.
  • 2 There were significant differences in allele frequencies among sites. Most populations were fixed for a particular allele at each locus. Only five lakes had polymorphic populations.
  • 3 Polymorphic populations showed significant deviation from expected Hardy-Weinberg genotype frequencies. In each case, there was an excess of homozygotes.
  • 4 Two lakes were examined for intra-lake allele frequency differences. In one lake there were no differences. The other lake exhibited significant allele frequency differences between stations at the north and south ends of the lake.
  • 5 Populations were examined for the frequency distribution of composite genotypes over three loci. Most populations were dominated by one or two genotypes.
  • 6 The results suggest sporadic sexual recruitment and a high degree of genetic isolation among these populations of H. gibberum. In these respects they resemble the permanent pond populations of Daphnia magna examined by Hebert (1974a).

SUMMARY. 1. The intersetular distance (filter mesh-size) of adult Simocephalus showed a two-fold seasonal variation in each of two ponds. In one pond the maximum intersetular distance was found in March, while in the other pond the maximum intersetular distance was found in September.
2. These seasonal changes in intersetular distances was positively correlated with changes in phytoplankton biomass (estimated by chlorophyll a). As food concentration increased (estimated by chlorophyll a) the mean intersetular distance of adull Simocephalus also increased.
3. The intersetular distances on fillcring setae also vary with the size of animals. There is a linear relation between body length and intersetular distance.
4. Variation in the intersetular dimension with body size may decrease competition tor food between adults and young.  相似文献

Almatium gusevi (Chernyshev 1940), a kazacharthran branchiopod, is redescribed on the basis of plentiful new and well preserved material from the Late Triassic Huangshanjie Formation in the Turpan Basin, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Eigen-shape analysis of head shield-shapes confirms the occurrence in these fossils of two distinct shapes which were previously interpreted as representing males (smaller) and females (larger). New interpretations, however, lead to further speculation of the reproductive modes inA. gusevi as possibly including, in addition to hatching of normally fertilised eggs from the ovisacs of mature females: 1) formation of ephippium-like resting stages to survive ambiental drying-out; 2) development of hermaphroditic females; and 3) the possible occurrence of two electrophoretically-distinct size-differentiated clones in a population of parthenogenetic females.  相似文献

In order to characterize the genetic relationship of six populations of Mytilus coruscus Gould in the East China Sea, a 681 bp region of mtDNA COI gene was sequenced and analyzed. Eighty four individuals in total were collected from three cultured populations and three wild populations from three localities of the coast of East China Sea. The sequences from these different populations identified 62 polymorphic sites, which included 41 singleton variable sites and 21 parsimony informative sites that defined 45 distinct haplotypes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that most haplotypes were highly interconnected with each other. Thirty seven of the 45 haplotypes were only found in their own populations, seven were found at two-four localities and only haplotype NO.2 was found in all six populations, indicating that most haplotypes were locally restricted. All haplotypes had shaped two similar branches, each including individuals from all six strains. The results of FST values indicated that the genetic distances between populations are not closely associated with their geographic distances.  相似文献

A computer-assisted cladistic analysis on morphological characters of the Diplostraca (Conchostraca and Cladocera) has been undertaken for the first time. The morphological information has been obtained from literature and transformed into 56 suitable characters. The analysis included 47 ingroup taxa, comprising five conchostracan taxa (four families of the Spinicaudata and the Laevicaudata) and 42 genera of the Cladocera. A detailed character discussion is presented which will be a useful working base for future phylogenetic studies on the group. A number of systematic groups were, with differing degrees of certainty, supported in all 218 equally short trees. These are the Diplostraca, Cladocera, Gymnomera (Onychopoda and Haplopoda), Onychopoda, Podonidae, Cercopagididae, Anomopoda, Daphniidae, Moininae, Scapholeberinae, Chydoridae, Chydorinae and Sididae. The Spinicaudata were only supported on some of the 218 equally short trees while no support was found for the Conchostraca. Two taxa—the Macrothricidae and Aloninae—were relatively strongly indicated to be paraphyletic. A suggested classificatory hierarchy, without indication of absolute rank, is presented.  相似文献

European populations of Daphnia similis Claus have been compared with populations from tropical Asia. Daphnia similoides n. sp. from tropical Asia was described as the sibling species of D. similis. The female has characteristic neonate, postabdomen, head, and ephippium. The male has characteristic rostrum, antennules, and the distalmost part of the postabdomen. Linking measures of immune function with infection, and ultimately, host and parasite fitness is a major goal in the field of ecological immunology. In this study, we tested for the presence and timing of a cellular immune response in the crustacean Daphnia magna following exposure to its sterilizing endoparasite Pasteuria ramosa. We found that D. magna possesses two cell types circulating in the haemolymph: a spherical one, which we call a granulocyte and an irregular-shaped amoeboid cell first described by Metchnikoff over 125 years ago. Daphnia magna mounts a strong cellular response (of the amoeboid cells) just a few hours after parasite exposure. We further tested for, and found, considerable genetic variation for the magnitude of this cellular response. These data fostered a heuristic model of resistance in this naturally coevolving host–parasite interaction. Specifically, the strongest cellular responses were found in the most susceptible hosts, indicating resistance is not always borne from a response that destroys invading parasites, but rather stems from mechanisms that prevent their initial entry. Thus, D. magna may have a two-stage defence—a genetically determined barrier to parasite establishment and a cellular response once establishment has begun.  相似文献

The study investigated the ecophysiological differences between populations of the Common frog( Rana temporaria L.) from different altitudes in northern England. Frog embryos in upland northern ponds experience very low temperatures during the period of embryonic development. These embryos were found to have a lower lethal limit for 50% normal development of2–8 °C, compared with3–8 °C for lowland embryos. These values are below most of the lower limiting temperature estimates previously obtained for R. temporaria . Embryos from upland ponds developed faster at low temperatures than embryos from lowland ponds. This may be an adaptation to the shorter growing season and lower temperatures at higher altitudes. Upland female frogs were found to be shorter and produced fewer eggs than lowland females. The differences found between lowland and upland frogs are discussed in terms of their potential adaptive significance.  相似文献
