This work presents the results of the amplitude-phase structure of the physiological rhythms (locomotor activity) and steroid hormones production (common testosterone and cortisole) in gelded and intact Wistar male rats as well as rats exposed to an information load. The markers have been shown to depend on the social state of the animal. It was proved that there was a phase coincidence of the periods of the biological rhythms of common testosterone (intact rats), cortisole and locomotor activity for animals with different individualand typological features. It was shown that the oscillation period of infradian rhythms of the measured markers of physiologic and metabolic processes in the animals of all groups amounted to 4 days. It was found that infradian rhythms were not sensitive to factors of various genesis.  相似文献

The resistance of male Wistar rats to acute hypoxia was estimated from the lifetime at an "altitude" of 11.5 km above sea level from 13 to 21 p.m. and in different seasons of a year. Identical types of rhythms (circaseptan, circasemiseptan, infradian, circadian, and ultradian) of geomagnetic activity and lifetime were revealed. It was found that the periods of basal rhythms either coincide or are multiple. It was shown that the rhythms of geomagnetic activity (including nonbasal rhythms) affect lifetime rhythms (especially ultradian rhythms). As the periods of the rhythms decrease, the number of rhythms for both parameters increase (ultradian rhythms are most numerous), and relative differences in the values of periods (they are minimal for ultradian rhythms) and the amplitudes of rhythms decrease.  相似文献

It was shown that adaptation to experimental conditions does not result in complete extinction of rat exploratory activity in the open-field test, as it was thought earlier. Behavior of rats is rhythmic. It can be described by a set of infradian oscillations with the periods about 30.4, 18.2, 13.5, 9.3, 7.3, 5.7, and 3.5 days. Pinealectomy does not abolish the infradian rhythmicity of behavioral parameters but modifies it. These findings allow the pineal gland to be considered as an organizer of biorhythms of animal behavior within a wide range of periods including the infradian as well as circadian and seasonal oscillations.  相似文献

Previous long-term studies have shown that in the pineal gland of rats melatonin synthesis is subject to infradian rhythms with periods between 4 and 7 days. Since in these studies melatonin-related parameters were measured at one timepoint of a 24-hr cycle only, the aim of the present investigation was to extend these experiments by more frequent sampling, to characterize the infradian rhythmicity in more detail. Male Sprague-Dawley rats kept under a light schedule of LD 12:12 (lights on at 0700) were killed at 6-hr intervals on 8 consecutive days. After decapitation the pineal gland was rapidly dissected out, followed by measurements of one of the melatonin-forming enzymes, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity. It was found that pineal NAT activity exhibited the well known day/night rhythm, i.e. low activity during daytime and strikingly enhanced activity at night, during the first 4 days of the experiment. On the fifth night (from Saturday to Sunday) an unusually high NAT peak occurred at 2400 hr, followed by two atypical 24-hr cycles. In the first cycle the midnight and 0600 hr values were equal and in the second cycle the 0600 hr value was significantly higher than the midnight value. To investigate whether the unusually high NAT peak was a single event or not, four additional short-term experiments were carried out at 2400 hr on 4 consecutive weekends, from Friday to Monday. Background. The dynamics of testosterone levels exhibits several cyclic patterns with various period lengths. Circadian and circannual rhythms of testosterone are known in both genders. Among infradian rhythms only the circalunar cycle in women is widely accepted. In our previous studies we have found a circatrigintan (30 days) and a circavigintan (20 days) cycle in men. Whether cyclic patterns with higher frequencies are present in the dynamics of testosterone levels in men or in women is unknown.

Aim. To analyze the infradian dynamics of salivary testosterone in both genders for the presence of cyclic patterns.

Subjects and methods. Seventeen young and healthy women and 15 men were asked to collect saliva samples during 30 consecutive days. Testosterone levels were determined using radioimmunoassay, Analysis of Rhythmic Variance II (ANORVA II) was used for statistical analysis. Potential period lengths of 3 - 15 days were evaluated.

Results. The dynamics of salivary testosterone showed high intra-individual variability in both genders (coefficient of variation - 28% in women and 26% in men). ANORVA II analysis showed no significant rhythms, although a weak circaseptan cyclic pattern has been found in women.

Discussion. Our results showed no significant infradian cyclic variation with a period between 3 and 15 days. Further studies should concentrate on potential longer periods. Described intra-individual variability of testosterone levels in both genders should be considered in endocrine research.  相似文献

Background. Circadian and circannual cycles of testosterone (T) in men are known. The results of our previous study have shown indices for the existence of a male circalunar cycle of T similar to the female one. Objective. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible infradian rhythms of salivary T in young healthy men. Subjects & Methods. Saliva samples from 31 healthy men (18–25 years of age) were collected every second day (for 1 month) and every third day (during the following 1.5 months). T levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. Data were statistically analyzed for infradian rhythmic changes using two different methods: moving averages – zones of extremes, and analysis of rhythmic variance. Results. The data showed rhythmic variations with 2 different infradian periods. The differences between extreme values of the circatrigintan (period of 30 days) and circavigintan (period of 20 days) cycles were found to be highly significant (p < 1E-9; p < 1E-8). Conclusion. We believe that this is the first study demonstrating the existence of circatrigintan and circavigintan rhythms of testosterone in human males. Our findings might have implications in human physiology and pathophysiology.  相似文献

Meteorotropic associations of heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) were investigated in a clinically healthy 48-year-old man in Kiev. His electrocardiogram (ECG) was determined over 50 days by fitting him with an ambulatorily wearable device; various natural physical environmental variables were also monitored. The mean inter-beat interval, the standard deviation of these intervals, the spectral power in several frequency ranges, the power ratio of the approx. 10.5-s/approx. 3.6-s spectral components and other aspects of HRV were computed over consecutive 14.4-min intervals. Together with ordinary meteorological variables, geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) and fluctuations of atmospheric pressure (FAP) in the range 0.01–0.10 Hz (10–100 s) were measured. The assessable infradian spectra (with frequencies lower than 1 cycle/28 hours) of all HRV parameters showed two major components with periods of about 3.5 and 10 days. Two environmental variables, FAP and wind speed (with which FAP is closely related), revealed both of these rhythms and showed the greatest cross-spectral coherence (0.70–0.98) with corresponding oscillations of HRV. Less specific but statistically significant product-moment correlations with major HRV indices were also found; most of these were with FAP, but correlations with air temperature, humidity, wind speed and geomagnetic disturbances were also found. Long-term ECG recording, essential in the detection of infradian rhythms, proved to be sensitive to physical environmental variables, notably meteorological ones. FAP, usually neglected since its role has not been considered in previous biometeorological studies, or some factor closely related to FAP is probably involved in synchronizing or influencing the approximately 3.5-day HR and HRV rhythms in humans. Motor activity and changes in body temperature related to the alternation of stages of an estrous cycle were studied in albino rats; groups of animals with the intact preoptic region (RPO), with electrolytically destroyedRPO, and with lesion of this structure followed by a transplantation of the embryonicRPO tissue were compared. Ultradian oscillations with periods between 5 min and 4 h have been described in cell-free extracts, single-celled eukaryotes, cultured cells and embryos. Whereas some of these potentially oscillatory systems (e.g. glycolysis) may only exhibit this type of behaviour rarely if at all in vivo , other ultradian oscillators in lower eukaryotes are rhythms and probably have timekeeping functions. Rhythms with ultradian periods of 10 min to 20 h in oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production have also been studied in endotherm animals: these rhythms may be modified by variations of environmental parameters and by circadian and infradian synchronizers. Interspecies and interstrain differences strongly suggest that these rhythms are endogenous and have a genetic origin. We suggest that the temporal organization of biochemical and physiological processes facilitates optimization of thermodynamic maintenance of the organism within the random fluctuations of its physicochemical environment and contributes to genetic selection.  相似文献

Previous studies involving physical-immobilization stress in laboratory rats have yielded inconsistent results with respect to melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland. As melatonin formation undergoes circadian and infradian rhythms, the aim of the present study was to examine whether stress experiments exhibit day-to-day variation. Toward this end, groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were stressed by physical immobilization on eight consecutive days, respectively, or left relatively undisturbed, and killed. The pineal gland was rapidly dissected out and serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and melatonin levels were measured. NAT activity was significantly depressed on experimental days 1, 3 and 5, and slightly depressed on day 7. In addition, both in control and experimental animals NAT activity exhibited statistically significant differences between experimental days. Pineal melatonin levels were less variable. On experimental days 3 and 6 immobilization led to a significant increase of pineal melatonin levels. These results show that day-to-day variation is an important factor that influences the outcome of stress experiments and represent another example that NAT activity and pineal melatonin levels do not always show corresponding changes.  相似文献

Past research has shown that there is a circadian oscillator in laboratory rats that is entrained by restricted feeding schedules. However, in laboratory rats at least, the light-dark (LD) cycle is the dominant zeitgeber in the entrainment of wheel-running activity rhythms. Given that dasyurid marsupials are predominantly carnivorous, the episodic intake of food in the wild and the high nutritive content of that food suggest that food may be an important zeitgeber in these species. Twelve Sminthopsis macroura froggatti were presented with a daily meal at 0900 hr under an LD 12:12 cycle with lights-on at 0600 hr for 37 days. Activity in anticipation of the meal was observed in most animals. Following this, all animals were exposed to periods of 12-18 days ad lib. food interspersed with 3-day periods of deprivation--a technique used previously to demonstrate persistent meal-associated rhythms. The meal-associated activity rhythms previously observed in rats during the 3-day deprivation period were not seen, but the 3-day deprivation period produced large phase-shifts in the activity rhythms of several S.m. froggatti. It is concluded that meal feeding does not dominate the LD cycle in entraining dasyurid marsupials, but that the frequent observation of phase shifts suggests a different and, perhaps, stronger role for food intake in biological rhythmicity than has been observed previously in laboratory rats.  相似文献

The vegetative growth of Ulva lactuca was studied to determine if the growth rate of the alga is driven by infradian rhythmicity. The influence of temperature on the infradian rhythm of growth was also investigated. Discs of Ulva were grown in controlled laboratory conditions at different combinations of temperature (5, 10, 15, 20°С) and irradiance (40 and 60 μmol photons m?2 s?1) under 12 : 12 h light : dark cycles. The growth rates exhibited a rhythmic pattern with one major peak every 2 or 3 days. Growth at 5 or 10°С increased the prevalence of 3-day cycles and maintained U. lactuca in the vegetative growth stage. In contrast, growth at 15 or 20°С provoked a predominance of the 2-day cycle and induced reproduction. The 2- or 3-day cycles were combined in longer cycles having a period close to 6 days. We suppose that the 2-, 3- and 6-day rhythms of physiological processes are related to large-scale Rossby and Kelvin waves, which produce oscillations in the geomagnetic field and seawater temperature with the same periods. The predominance of 2-day or 3-day fluctuations of the geomagnetic field and temperature probably determine the prevalence of reproduction and vegetative growth, respectively, in Ulva.  相似文献

Subcutaneous transplantation between 5-day-old littermates of non-inbred rats was used to study the regeneration following partial or total removal of the proximal epiphyseal cartilage of the humerus. More than 200 transplants were followed for periods ranging from 2 to 60 days. No regeneration occurred after a complete epiphysectomy, while a partial regeneration took place in many of the partially epiphysectomized transplants, insofar as the growth plate appeared to be functional for a period of time, but no epiphysis developed. Observations on the early activity of the periosteum and on the fate of the articular cartilage of the transplants were made and compared to findings reported in the literature. The absence of regeneration found in the present study was comparable to that found in earlier studies on the mandibular condyle.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide emission (VCO2) taken as an index of respiratory and metabolic exchanges, was continuously recorded during 4-30 consecutive days in 100 quail, 87 chicks, 347 rats, 665 mice and 70 guinea-pigs which were under controlled environmental parameters. Harmonic analysis, fast Fourier transform, chi-square periodograms, peak and trough intervals were computed with VCO2 values obtained with CO2 concentrations sampled every 20 min on the CO2 recordings. In LD 12:12 alternation, circadian rhythms were observed in all quail, chicks, rats and mice, but only in 80% of the guinea-pigs. Ultradian VCO2 rhythms, with periods which show statistically significant interspecies differences, were assessed. For each of the 5 species these computed periods, which were the same in LL and DD, were: 1.17 h for quail and chickens, 1.25 h for rats, 1.50 h for mice and 1.0 h for guinea-pigs. In LD 12:12 these periods were different during L and D in quail, chicks, rats and mice, but not in guinea-pigs. The amplitudes of these ultradian variations were, according to the species, 10-20% of their mean VCO2 levels. These ultradian rhythms persist in the absence (or masking) of circadian rhythms, e.g. in LD 12:12 in 20% of guinea-pigs and in LL in 87% of Japanese quail and in 23% of Sprague-Dawley rats. Moreover, these ultradian rhythms persist during starvation, locomotor activity restraint and ageing. These ultradian VCO2 cycles which are related to rest-activity variations appear to be basic physiological rhythms with a genetic origin.  相似文献

The hematopoietic and the immune systems in all their components are characterized by a multifrequency time structure with prominent rhythms in cell proliferation and cell function in the circadian, infradian, and rhythms in cell proliferation and cell function in the circadian, infradian, and circannual frequency ranges. The circulating formed elements in the peripheral blood show highly reproducible circadian rhythms. The timing and the extent of these rhythms were established in a clinically healthy human population and are shown as chronograms, cosinor summaries and, for some high-amplitude rhythms, as time-qualified reference ranges (chronodesms). Not only the number but also the reactivity of circulating blood cells varies predictably as a function of time as shown for the circadian rhythm in responsiveness of human and murine lymphocytes in vitro to lectin mitogens (phytohemagglutinin and pokeweed mitogen). Some circadian rhythms of hematologic functions appear to be innate and are presumably genetically determined but are modulated and adjusted in their timing by environmental factors, so-called synchronizers. Phase alterations in the circadian rhythms of hematologic parameters of human subjects and of mice by manipulation of the activity-rest or light-dark schedule and/or of the time of food uptake are presented. Characteristically these functions do not change their timing immediately after a shift in synchronizer phase but adapt over several and in some instances over many transient cycles. The circadian rhythm of cell proliferation in the mammalian bone marrow and lymphoid system as shown in mice in vivo and in vitro may lend itself to timed treatment with cell-cycle-specific and nonspecific agents in an attempt to maximize the desired and to minimize the undesired treatment effects upon the marrow. Differences in response, and susceptibility of cells and tissues at different stages of their circadian and circaseptan (about 7-day) rhythms and presumably of cyclic variations in other frequencies are expected to lead to the development of a chronopharmacology of the hematopoietic and immune system. Infradian rhythms of several frequencies have been described for numerous hematologic and immune functions. Some of these, i.e., in the circaseptan frequency range, seem to be of importance for humoral and for cell mediated immune functions including allograft rejection. Infradian rhythms with periods of 19 to 22 days seem to occur in some hematologic functions and are very prominent in cyclic neutropenia and (with shorter periods) in its animal model, the grey collie syndrome.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Diurnality in rodents is relatively rare and occurs primarily in areas with low nighttime temperatures such as at high altitudes and desert areas. However, many factors can influence temporal activity rhythms of animals, both in the field and the laboratory. The temporal activity patterns of the diurnal ice rat were investigated in the laboratory with, and without, access to running wheels, and in constant conditions with running wheels. Ice rats appeared to be fundamentally diurnal but used their running wheels during the night. In constant conditions, general activity remained predominantly diurnal while wheel running was either nocturnal or diurnal. In some animals, entrainment of the wheel running rhythm was evident, as demonstrated by free-running periods that were different from 24 h. In other animals, the wheel running activity abruptly switched from nocturnal to subjective day as soon as the animals entered DD, and reverted back to nocturnal once returned to LD, suggesting the rhythms were masked by light. Wheel running rhythms appears to be less robust and more affected by light compared to general activity rhythms. In view of present and future environmental changes, the existence of more unstable activity rhythms that can readily switch between temporal niches might be crucial for the survival of the species.  相似文献

The glucocorticoid function of adrenals was studied in 23 first-year schoolboys that were subdivided into health groups I and II. The character and time organization of the infradian dynamics of the cortisol were studied during the period of acute adaptation to the beginning of schooling and throughout the school year. The schoolboys of health group II were different from those of group I by both the higher level of the week mesor and its dynamics during the entire school year. By the end of the first half of the year, the structure of cortisol infradian rhythms was changed in the first-year schoolboys of group II: the slow rhythms of cortisol secretion with the period of five to seven days became predominant, and the fact that the absolute values of their amplitudes were significantly increased suggested a tension in the functions of the adrenal cortex.  相似文献

Chronobiology is that branch of science that objectively explores and quantifies mechanisms of biological time structure, including the important rhythmic manifestations of life. It is the study of biological rhythms. This paper introduces chronobiology and some of its vocabulary, principles, and techniques. A circadian rhythm is a regularly repetitive, quantitative physiological change with a period of about 24 hr (20-28), but the spectrum of rhythms includes those with periods less than 20 hr (ultradian) and longer than 28 hr (infradian). These rhythms are ubiquitous among the eukaryotes, innate and endogenous; their periods are precisely controlled by synchronizers in the environment. Rhythms can be manipulated by altering their synchronizers or by introducing more dominant ones. When organisms are removed from their environment and placed in constant conditions, rhythms revert to their natural frequencies and free-run. All of an organism's rhythms operate simultaneously, but their peaks and troughs do not necessarily occur at the same time. There are rhythms in susceptibility to drugs; a fixed dose may have a therapeutic effect at one point along the 24 hr time scale and a harmful one at another. Knowledge of these rhythms can be important when designing experimental or treatment protocols and interpreting results. Examples are provided to show that single-time-point sampling can lead to erroneous results, unless biological periodicity is taken into consideration.  相似文献

Abstract

To test the hypothesis that an oscillator located outside the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) controls the circadian rhythm of body temperature, we conducted a study with 14 blinded rats, 10 of which receiving a SCN lesion. Body temperature was automatically and continuously recorded for about one month by intraperitoneal radio transmitters. Food intake, drinking and locomotor activity were also recorded. Periodograms revealed that 3 rats with histologically verified total bilateral SCN lesions did not exhibit any circadian rhythmicity. The 7 other rats appeared to have partial lesions. They showed shortening of period and severe amplitude reduction in all functions. Thus, no support was found for the hypothesis of a separate circadian ‘temperature oscillator’ located outside the SCN. Nevertheless, after large partial lesions body temperature showed more persistency than some of the other behavioral rhythms.

Ultradian rhythms in temperature persisted after partial and total lesions. Other functions showed parallel ultradian rhythms. In intact rats the ultradian peaks were restricted predominantly to the subjective night. After total lesions these peaks became more or less homogeneously distributed in time but more heterogeneously after partial lesions. So the SCN plays a role in the temporal structure of ultradian rhythms but does not generate them. Non‐24‐hour actograms showed instabilities of period and phase of ultradian rhythms. Intact and lesioned rats were similar with respect to the mean (about 3.5 hrs) and standard deviation (about 1.5 hrs) of ultradian periods in temperature. These features indicate that a mechanism outside the SCN is underlying ultradian rhythmicity, capable of generating short‐term oscillations. Two approaches, homeostatic sleep‐wake relaxation oscillations and multiple circadian oscillators, are discussed.  相似文献

In order to investigate the circadian oscillatory system, the present study performed simultaneous and continuous recordings of brain and intraperitoneal temperatures, drinking and locomotion in rats under light-dark (LD) cycles and continuous dim illumination (dim LL) for a total period of 16 days. Compared to circadian amplitudes under LD, those under dim LL were significantly reduced by 34% for drinking and 50% for locomotion, but were not for brain and intraperitoneal temperatures. On the other hand, means of steady circadian periods during last 10 days under dim LL were all within a close range between 24.2 and 24.3 h in these rhythms. Besides the steady periods, one rat exhibited weak circadian period of 23.7 and 24.6 h, but these multiple frequencies were also equally observed in the four rhythms. The similarity in the periodicities suggests that these temperature and activity rhythms might be driven by a common oscillatory system. Therefore differential reductions in the amplitudes of drinking and loc omotor rhythms might be caused by a masking effect of dim LL on their rhythm output-pathways. Hence rats may temporally coordinate various physiological and behavioral functions by such clock system under time cue free environment.  相似文献
