1. Density gradients of cladocerans and copepods were generated in an enclosure experiment to compare the impact on the plankton of a filter feeder (Daphnia hyalina × galeata) with that of more selective feeders (calanoid and cyclopoid copepods). The experiment was conducted in situ over 25 days during spring in a mesotrophic lake, Schöhsee, Germany. 2. The plankton community was monitored regularly. Daphniids were able to graze on the phytoplankton present, which mainly consisted of small (<1000 μm3) species, whereas copepods did not show any impact on algae. 3. At the end of the experiment, Daphnia and remaining cyclopoid copepods were harvested and sorted manually, prior to analyses for stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. Daphniids from mesocosms stocked purely with differing densities of Daphnia showed little variability in stable isotope values, whereas those that thrived in enclosure bags together with copepods exhibited lower δ13C values. 4. The change in Daphniaδ13C indicates a change of food sources, modified by the presence of the copepods: the higher the mean abundance of copepods in the enclosures, the more 13C‐depleted the daphniids. Increasing abundance of high nucleic acid (HNA) bacteria in the copepod bags may account for the trend in Daphniaδ13C via increased grazing on the bacteria themselves, or via grazing on phytoplankton utilising isotopically light CO2 from respiratory release. 5. Cyclopoid copepod stable isotope signatures were related to Daphnia and copepod abundances in copepod bags, suggesting that cyclopoids preyed on the available zooplankton.  相似文献

1. Analyses of zooplankton fatty acid (FA) composition in laboratory experiments and samples collected from lakes in New Zealand spanning a wide gradient of productivity were used to assess the extent to which FAs might infer their diet. We used the cladocerans, Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia, and the calanoid copepod, Boeckella, as test organisms, and monocultures of cryptophytes, chlorophytes and cyanobacteria as food. Based on reproductive success, cryptophytes were the highest food quality, chlorophytes were intermediate and cyanobacteria the poorest. 2. Several FA groups were highly correlated between zooplankton and their diets. They were monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and ω3 and ω6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for cladocerans, and saturated fatty acids (SAFAs) and ω3 PUFAs for copepods. Several FAs varied significantly less in the zooplankton than in their monoculture diets, e.g. MUFAs in Daphnia, and ω3 and ω6 PUFAs in Ceriodaphnia, despite clear dietary dependency for these FAs. 3. Zooplankton collected from lakes in New Zealand had more eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (Daphnia), more highly unsaturated ω3 and ω6 FAs (C20, C22; Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia, Boeckella) and less ω3 C18 PUFAs (Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia, Boeckella) and ω6 C18 PUFAs (Daphnia, Ceriodaphnia) than measured in the same species reared on phytoplankton in the laboratory. 4. Analyses of FA composition of seston and freshwater zooplankton globally showed that, in general, zooplankton had a significantly higher proportion of arachidonic acid and EPA than seston, and copepods also had a higher percentage of docosahexaenoic acid than seston. 5. These results suggest that zooplankton selectively incorporate the most physiologically important FAs. This could be a consequence of preferential assimilation, selective feeding on more nutritious cells or locating and feeding within higher food quality food patches.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments tested the hypothesis that a toxic strain of Microcystis aeruginosa decreases the ability of Daphnia pulex to interfere with Keratella cochlearis. To test a variety of conditions, juvenile and adult Daphnia were exposed to the cyanobacterium for different time periods prior to, and during the experiments. Adult Daphnia not only suppressed rotifers over successive two-day intervals, but also had a significant impact within a 24-hour period. However, the presence of Microcystis (5 × 105 cells ml–1) decreased the Daphnia effect in both experiments. Although juvenile Daphnia also significantly suppressed Keratella population growth, the presence of Microcystis (105 and 5 × 105 cells ml–1) caused a significant reduction in daphniid body size and decreased the ability of both nonacclimated and acclimated daphniids to suppress rotifers. Keratella inhalation and mortality are positively correlated with filtering rates and body size of Daphnia. Therefore, the feeding rates and size structure of a Daphnia population will determine its potential to interfere with vulnerable rotifers. In all experiments the presence of Microcystis significantly decreased the ability of Daphnia to interfere with this rotifer despite the fact that Keratella was also inhibited. In the field this effect might be augmented if Microcystis colonies are more easily ingested by cladocerans than by the rotifers.  相似文献

Five laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of supplements of fatty acids and a green alga on the individual growth and reproduction of three species of tropical cladocerans Ceriodaphnia richardi, Daphnia ambigua, and D. gessneri feeding on natural seston from the Brazilian Lake Monte Alegre. Cohorts of newborns from cultivated females were submitted to one of the following treatments: (1) Natural seston, (2) Natural seston + microcapsules of EPA and DHA or linoleic and linolenic fatty acids, (3) Natural seston + oil-free microcapsules, and (4) Natural seston + green alga Scenedesmus spinosus (1 mg C l−1). Particulate organic carbon, algal carbon, C:P ratios of seston and green alga, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content of seston and cladocerans, as well as phytoplankton composition, size, and shape were measured. The addition of fatty acids to seston did not significantly enhance growth and reproduction of the cladocerans, suggesting that sestonic PUFA content is sufficient for promoting cladoceran development, even in the cool–dry season when the fatty acids used in the experiments were 5–10 times lower in the seston than in the warm–wet season. Despite high C:P molar ratios in most experiments, there was only one indication of growth limitation by P. Reproduction was more affected than individual growth on some occasions by food quantity (energy) caused apparently by algal size, morphology, and digestion resistance. Energy availability, which is affected by algae morphological characteristics, seems to prevail over PUFA and P in controlling growth and reproduction of cladocerans in tropical Lake Monte Alegre.  相似文献

Macrophyte growth was studied in two enclosure types (gauze and polythene) in a homogeneousPotamogeton pectinatus bed in Lake Veluwe (The Netherlands). The gauze was expected to allow for sufficient exchange with the lake to maintain similar seston densities, the polythene was expected to exclude fish activity and most water exchange. Polythene enclosures held higher totalP. pectinatus biomass (ash-free dry weight, AFDW) than the lake, gauze enclosures were intermediate. The enclosures had a higher abundance of other macrophyte species (Chara sp.,Potamogeton pusillus) than the lake. Seston ash content was not but seston AFDW, periphyton ash content and AFDW were lower in polythene than in gauze enclosures. The difference in plant biomass between gauze and polythene may be attributed to a difference in periphyton density and in seston AFDW due to zooplankton grazing (Rotatoria andDaphnia densities were higher in polythene enclosures). Since seston and periphyton AFDW and ash content were similar in lake and gauze enclosures, the intermediate macrophyte biomass in the gauze enclosures may be explained by reduced wave action and mechanical stress. Alternatively, phytoplankton inhibition by allelopathic excretions from the macrophytes may have caused the high macrophyte biomass in the polythene, and an absence of sediment-disturbing fish the intermediate biomass in the gauze enclosures. Creation of sheltered areas may favour macrophyte growth through both mechanisms and we conclude that this can be an important tool in littoral biomanipulation.  相似文献

Cladocerans and copepods are common inhabitants of ponds and lakes, but assessments of the toxic effects of chemicals on aquatic organisms are often based mainly on toxicity data for cladocerans of the genus Daphnia. The paucity of toxicity data for copepods and other species of cladocerans raised the question whether toxicity data derived primarily from daphniids can be extrapolated to protect other planktonic organisms. In this study, we address this question by systematically comparing between the sensitivities of cladocerans and copepods to the metals Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn using the species sensitivity distributions. Our results indicate that cladocerans are consistently more sensitive than copepods to Cd and Cu. Most importantly, sensitivities of D. magna, D. pulex, and Ceriodaphnia dubia, the three most commonly tested cladocerans, to these metals are higher than those of most copepod species and fall within the range of those exhibited by other cladocerans. C. dubia, a cladoceran with relatively small body size, is more sensitive to all metals than most other cladoceran species. Our results imply that water quality criteria of trace metals derived from datasets dominated by Daphnia are likely also protective to copepods and most other cladocerans.  相似文献

The cladocerans Ceriodaphnia richardi, Daphnia ambigua, D. gessneri and Moina micrura were used to access food quality of Lake Monte Alegre’s seston. Experiments were carried out in summer and autumn as growth assays with lake seston only (control) and seston supplemented with phosphate, fatty acids or Synechococcus, and Scenedesmus. In summer, high C:P ratios in seston suggested strong phosphorus limitation, however, contrary to the expectations of stoichiometric theory, the addition of phosphate to seston did not improve cladoceran growth. Addition of PUFA increased growth rates and clutch size of D. gessneri, suggesting a possible deficiency in essential fatty acids in summer. Addition of Scenedesmus increased significantly growth rates of the cladocerans D. gessneri and C. cornuta, suggesting energy limitation in summer. In autumn, C:P ratios were lower than in summer, but still above the threshold ratio for Daphnia. At this time, addition of phosphate increased significantly growth rates of Daphnia suggesting strong P limitation, especially in D. gessneri. However, energy limitation was still important in autumn, as suggested by a further increase in growth rates in +Syn and +Sce treatments. Energy limitation was especially strong for Moina micrura, which is a fast-growing species, with high P content. Algal digestion resistance is a plausible hypothesis for energy limitation, since carbon concentrations in both seasons were above incipient limiting levels. These results show that the seston C:P ratio was not a consistent predictor of cladoceran P limitation and that factors other than P and energy limitation seem to be also important, such as PUFA or other biochemical factors. Both field observations and enclosure experiments show that juvenile copepods enter Daphnia brood cavities to feed on Daphnia eggs and embryos. The ability to perform such in vivo exploitation is reported for both cyclopoid and calanoid copepods. Copepodites of Acanthocyclops robustus (G.O. Sars) were found to eat eggs in brood cavities of D. magna, D. pulex and D. pulicaria in experimental enclosures rich in algae. Copepodites of Eudiaptomus gracilus (G.O. Sars) were found in brood cavities of D. hyalina in a mesotrophic lake. The copepods' intrusions into brood cavities caused dramatic declines in the clutch size of infested Daphnia, and this predation effect could easily be confused with the effect of severe food limitation.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of seston (small-size fraction, < 50 m) and of Daphnia galeata, Bythotrephes longimanusand adult individuals of Leptodora kindtii was analysed in the summer of 1997. When comparing the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content of seston with Daphnia, Daphnia with Bythotrephes; Daphniawith Leptodora, we found similarities in the dynamics of EPA accumulation, in most cases. The content of EPA in seston was found to be significantly correlated with numerical abundance of small diatoms (r =0.662).Maximally the % EPA increased from seston (traces – 4% of total fatty acids) to Daphnia (traces – 12.2%). Both the lower and upper relative EPA contents were higher in Bythotrephes (10.8–16%), whereas the maximum value was lower in Leptodora (0.4–6.3%) compared to Daphnia. Correlation coefficients between the EPA content of the organisms at different trophic levels were not significant. The existence of species-specific differences in accumulation and /or transformation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in freshwater crustaceans is proposed.  相似文献

Survival of natural Daphnia populations without previous acclimatization in filtered water under laboratory conditions (starvation) was used as a parameter describing the actual competitive ability of populations in periods of food limitation. Two populations (1 and 2) of Daphnia pulicaria Forbes coming from two enclosures with a low (< 1 mgC l–1) and a high (about 3 mgC l–1) seston level were examined in their resistance to starvation. Juveniles of both populations survived better than adult females in the conditions without seston as well as in the control experiment, despite their much lower biomass. Animals from population 1 had lower mortality than those from population 2 in all variants of the experiment. The results confirm the hypothesis that the ability of daphnids to starve depends also on adaptation to previous feeding conditions.  相似文献

Invertebrate predation on zooplankton was investigated in mesocosms in the shallow tropical Lake Monte Alegre, São Paulo State, Brazil, in the summer of 1999. Two treatments were applied: one with natural densities of prey and the predators Chaoborus brasiliensis and the water mite Krendowskia sp. (Pr+), and another without predators (Pr-). Three enclosures (volume: 6.6 m3 of water per enclosure) per treatment were installed in the sediment of the deepest area of the lake (5.0 m). At the beginning, Chaoborus larvae were present in Pr- enclosures, because of technical difficulties in preventing their entrance, but they virtually disappeared in the course of the experiment. Water mites were almost absent in Pr- enclosures. Chaoborus predation negatively influenced the Daphnia gessneri population, but not the populations of the copepods Tropocyclops prasinus and Thermocyclops decipiens and the rotifers Keratella spp. Death rates of Daphnia were generally significantly higher in the Pr+ treatment; Daphnia densities increased after the disappearance of Chaoborus in Pr-. Copepod losses to predation in the experiment may be compensated by higher fecundity, shorter egg development time, and lower pressure on egg-bearing females, resulting in a lower susceptibility to Chaoborus predation. The predation impact of water mite on microcrustaceans and rotifers in the experiment was negligible.  相似文献

The rhabdocoel Mesostoma lingua is a common inhabitant of rock bluff ponds in the area of Churchill, Manitoba. Unlike most flatworms it has the ability to prey actively on zooplankton. Among the zooplankton, Mesostoma prefers Daphnia pulex, Simocephalus vetulus, and Diaptomus tyrrelli. Larger calanoid copepods are difficult to capture and take much longer to consume. Growth in Mesostoma is maintained when individuals consume 0.5 Daphnia day–1 and is maximal at 4 Daphnia day–1. In comparison, Mesostoma maintained growth only when offered the copepod Diaptomus victoriaensis at the rate of 8–10 individuals-day–1. Mesostoma may be an important agent in structuring pond zooplankton communities in the arctic, producing a shift in dominance away from cladocerans such as Daphnia toward larger calanoid copepods.  相似文献

Field-measured grazing rates (ml/animal/d) of cladocerans (mostly daphniids) and diaptomids were assembled from various published studies and plotted as a function of corresponding phytoplankton concentration (μg l−1 f.w.). Filtering rates of both zooplankton groups initially increased with seston concentration until maximal grazing rates were observed at approximately 4 × 102 and 1 × 102 μg l−1 for cladocerans and copepods, respectively; at higher algal concentrations, filtering rates of both declined as a function of food concentration. The shape of these curves are most consistent with Holling's (1966) Type 3 functional response. We found little support for the Type 3 functional response in published laboratory studies of Daphnia; most investigators report either a Type 1 or Type 2 response. The one study in which the Type 3 response was observed involved experiments where animals were acclimated at low food concentrations for 24 h, whereas those studies associated with response Types 1 or 2 had acclimation periods of only 1 to 3 h. We therefore assembled relevant data from the literature to examine the effect of acclimation period on the feeding rates of Daphnia at low food concentrations. In the absence of any acclimation, animals filtered at extremely low rates. After 2 h of acclimation, however, filtering rates increased 4 to 5-fold but declined again with longer durations; after > 70 h of pre-conditioning, filtering rates were almost as low as they had been with no acclimation. We also found little support for the Type 3 functional response in published studies of copepods. The only study associated with a Type 3 response involved a marine copepod that had been subjected to a starvation period of 48 h; however, an analysis of the effects of acclimation period did not yield conclusive evidence that filtering rates of freshwater copepods (Diaptomus and Eudiaptomus) decrease significantly with acclimation duration. The low filtering rates associated with long acclimation periods in laboratory experiments appears to be a direct result of animals becoming emaciated from prolonged exposure to low food concentrations, a situation which renders them incapable of high filtering rates. This may explain the Type 3 functional response for field cladocerans, since zooplankton in food-limiting situations are constantly exposed to low food concentrations, and would therefore have low body carbon and consequently less energy to filter-feed. We cannot, however, use this to explain the Type 3 response for field diaptomids, since copepods in the laboratory did not appear to lose body carbon even after 72 h of feeding at very low food levels, and there was inconclusive evidence that either Diaptomus or Eudiaptomus decrease their filtering rates with acclimation period. Although Incipient Limiting Concentrations (ILC) for Daphnia ranged from 1 to 8.5 × 103 μg 1−1, more than half of these fell between 1 and 3 × 103 μg l−1, bracketing the value of 2.7 × 102 μg l−1 for field cladocerans. There was, however, a great deal of variation in reported maximum ingestion rates (MIR), maximum filtering rates (MFR) and ILC values for Daphnia magna. ILC values from the few laboratory studies of freshwater copepods ranged between 0.5 to 2.8 × 103 μg 1−1, and was higher than the ILC value of approximately 0.2 × 103 μg l−1 calculated for field populations of D. minutus. Generally, there was considerable agreement among laboratory studies regarding the shape of grazing-rate and ingestion-rate curves when data were converted to similar units and presented on standardized scales.  相似文献

Density and size structure changes of natural daphniids populations were studied in enclosures with a different level of fish predation. Daphnia pulicaria was totaly removed in high predation variants, and the differences of the mean body length both in adults and juveniles are apparent between low predation enclosure and enclosure without fish. Daphnia galeata was replaced by D. magna and D. pulicaria in the enclosure without fish. The decline of densities and the substantial (30–50%) and fast (during 12 days) shift of mean body length both in adults and juveniles of D. galeata was induced by the fish (carp fry) introduction to the high predation enclosures.  相似文献

A field survey was conducted to study the relationships amongst the composition of the seston, the nutritional value of the seston for herbivorous zooplankton (Daphnia), and selected water clarity parameters. Sixteen ponds in a wetland area and seven larger lakes, all located in south central Saskatchewan, Canada, were sampled for seston. The phytoplankton species were identified, and various biochemical seston variables were measured. A biotest using the zooplankter Daphnia magna, was employed to assess the nutritional value of the seston. The best seston variable to explain Daphnia growth was the phospholipid content (simple linear regression analysis: R 2 adj = 0.50). The water absorbance ratio A250/A365 was a good predictor of lipid content of the seston. Both the absorbance ratio A250/A365 and the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were negatively correlated with Daphnia growth. We hypothesize that the penetration of visible and ultraviolet radiation is an important determinant of seston quality, especially the phospholipid content, and that this has important implications for determining ultimate growth rates of herbivorous zooplankton.  相似文献

Vendace (Coregonus albula, L.) is in the southern part of its distribution area during the summer period restricted to hypolimnion. Food is dominated by Bosmina coregoni and Daphnia sp. The selectivity index is highest for large cladocerans and large copepods.The pelagic crustacean fauna in vendace lakes is dominated by small species like Bosmina coregoni, Daphnia cristata, Thermocyclops and Mesocyclops sp. and Eudiaptomus sp. During periods of maximum vendace abundance only Bosmina coregoni is left of the cladocerans, while the abundance of cyclopoid copepods increases.  相似文献

Large-sized Daphnia hyalina×galeata hybrid and small-sized Ceriodaphnia reticulata were raised together for 3 weeks in thermally stratified flow-through tubes ('plankton organ'), in the presence and the absence of fish kairomone, and their relative performance was monitored, as indicated by the populations' growth rates (r). In the kairomone-free medium, D. hyalina grew faster than C. reticulata; the presence of kairomone reversed this ratio, producing relatively higher r in C. reticulata. The simulated fish presence reduced growth in D. hyalina population also when it was separated from the competitor, while growth in C. reticulata was altered by the kairomone only in the presence of Daphnia. It is suggested that costs of surface avoidance in Daphnia can reduce its competitive superiority to small-sized cladocerans, permanently dwelling at the surface.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Negative effects of zooplankton on the availability of phosphorus (P) for phytoplankton as a result of the retention of nutrients in zooplankton biomass and the sedimentation of exoskeletal remains after moulting, have been recently proposed. 2. In a mesocosm study, the relative importance of these mechanisms was tested for the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia hyalina×galeata. A total of 13 mesocosm bags was suspended in a mesotrophic German lake during summer 2000 and fertilised with inorganic P in order to obtain a total nitrogen to total P ratio closer to the Redfield ratio. D. hyalina×galeata was then added at a logarithmically scaled density gradient of up to 40 ind. L?1. Zooplankton densities, dissolved inorganic, particulate organic (seston <100 μm), as well as total nutrient concentrations were monitored. Additionally, nutrient concentrations of sediment water removed from the bottom of the mesocosm bags via a manual pump were determined. 3. Seston carbon (C), seston P and total P were significantly negatively correlated with Daphnia densities. The amount of particulate P (~5–6 μg P L?1) sequestered from the seston compartment by Daphnia corresponded roughly to the increase of zooplankton biomass (population growth). Soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP) was at all times high (~25–35 μg P L?1) and possibly unavailable to phytoplankton as a result of P adsorption to calcite during a calcite precipitation event (whiting). P concentrations determined in sediment water were generally <60 μg P m?2 and thus never exceeded 1% of the total amount of P bound in particulate matter of the overlying water column. 4. Seston C : P ratios followed a polynomial second‐order function: At Daphnia densities <40 ind. L?1 a positive linear relationship was evident, which is explained by the stronger reduction of P compared with C in seston, and transfer of seston P to zooplankton. Highest seston C : P ratios of ~300 : 1 were observed at Daphnia densities of ~30–50 ind. L?1, which is in agreement with proposed threshold values limiting Daphnia reproductive growth. At Daphnia densities >40–50 ind. L?1 C : P ratios were decreased because of the strong reduction of seston C at close to constantly low seston P‐values of ~3–4 μg P L?1. 5. At least for Daphnia, it may be concluded that – unlike population growth – the sedimentation of faecal pellets and carapaces after moulting seem negligible processes in pelagic phosphorus dynamics.  相似文献

Zooplankton samples were collected from 49 small reservoirs of northern Ivory Coast in April 1997. Thirty taxa were identified, including 20 rotifers, 3 copepods and 6 cladocerans. The number of taxa per lake ranged between 12 to 22 and decreased with the total abundance of zooplankton. Copepods dominated standing biomass. Coinertia analysis suggested the role of seston food abundance, oxygen depletion and turbidity for zooplankton abundance and community structure. Rotifers, and particularly Brachionus angularis, Polyarthra and Filinia, were more abundant than copepods in the most eutrophic, turbid and deoxygenated reservoirs. The role of oxygen as a determinant of community structure is probably linked to the specific tolerance of taxa, but turbidity role could not be evaluated with certainty in the absence of information on visual predators.  相似文献

The responses of nutrients, water transparency, zooplankton and phytoplankton to a gradient of silver carp biomass were assessed using enclosure methods. The gradient of four silver carp biomass levels was set as follows: 0, 116, 176 and 316 g m—2. Nutrients did not show any statistically significant differences among the treatments. An outburst of Daphnia only occurred in fishless enclosures where phytoplankton biomass was the lowest and water clarity significantly increased. While among fish enclosures, the small‐sized Moina micrura dominated throughout the experiment and both zooplankton and phytoplankton biomasses decreased with increased fish biomass. No large colonial cyanobacterial blooms occurred in the fishless enclosures as predicted. This might be due to low water temperature, short experiment time and the occurrence of large bodied Daphnia in our experiment. Cryptophyta was the most dominant group in most of the enclosures and the lake water throughout the experiment. The fishless enclosure had much lower proportion of Cyanophyta but higher proportion of Trachelomonas sp.  相似文献
