The Balanopaceae, whose flowers were poorly known, have, in the past, been variously allocated to the Fagales, Euphorbiaceae, Salicales or other hamamelids and rosids (these groups being in Fagales, Malpighiales and Saxifragales, according to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group). This paper attempts a clarification based on flower morphology. Female flowers and cupules were studied in Balanops vieillardii, young fruits in B. australiana. The cupules are simple involucres of bracts which are spirally arranged (according to a Fibonacci pattern) on the floral axis preceding the flower. They contrast with the complicated cupules of Fagaceae which consist of a condensed cymose ramification system of axes of several orders around the flower. Flowers appear later than most of the cupular bracts, in contrast to Fagaceae. In addition to a terminal flower there may be several smaller lateral flowers in the axil of cupular bracts, each surrounded by its own small cupule. The female flowers do not have a perianth. They consist of two to three large carpels. At anthesis, the ovary is completely septate; the syncarpous part (ovary and lower style) is completely symplicate. The carpels are free for most of their length, with the free parts once, twice or three times bifurcate, in contrast to simple in Fagales. The stigmatic surface covers the ventral side of each stigmatic branch and at the margins also spreads to the dorsal side. The stigma is wet and secretion appears holocrine. The two ovules per carpel are collateral and axile in early development. However, at anthesis they appear one above the other, because in one ovule the funicle greatly elongates. As the ovary elongates only above the placenta, the ovules appear basal at anthesis. The ovules are (weakly) crassinucellar, bitegmic (not unitegmic), anatropous, and intermediate between apotropous and epitropous (not apotropous). The ovules are mature at anthesis, in contrast to Fagales. In mature ovules the upper part of the nucellus disintegrates, and a weakly differentiated endothelium is present in the inner integument. The morphological results of this study support a position of Balanopaceae in Malpighiales, and not Fagales or other orders, and are thus in accordance with recent molecular results based on chloroplast rbcL sequences data. However, within Malpighiales, as opposed to molecular results, Balanopaceae agree more with Euphorbiaceae s.l. than with Dichapetalaceae/Trigoniaceae and Chrysobalanaceae/Euphroniaceae. 相似文献

In early tailbud embryos of the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), cells of the anterior myotomes begin to elongate and align along the longitudinal axis of the animal. Soon thereafter, gap junctions appear between the differentiating myotubes. These junctions occur between adjacent cells within a myotome (intramyotomal) and between the cells of adjacent myotomes which are separated from one another by narrow connective tissue septa (intermyotomal). The latter are found at the ends of the elongating cells where muscle-tendon insertion will occur and nerve-muscle synapses will form. The gap junctions are transient: They appear with the onset of myofibrillar formation at the time that nerve fibers enter the intermyotomal septa. The junctions last until the cells have differentiated into mature striated muscle cells and neuromuscular synapses are fully developed. These gap junctions may provide a means for the direct intercellular spread of electrical excitation between the differentiating muscle cells and so account for the observed myogenic contraction of myotomes. We also suggest that these junctions may form a means for cellular communication and interaction during the development of the axial musculature. 相似文献

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) plays a critical role in cholesterol metabolism by controlling the levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles that circulate in the bloodstream. Several gain-of-function and loss-of-function mutations in the PCSK9 gene, that occur naturally, have been identified and linked to hypercholesterolemia and hypocholesterolemia, respectively. PCSK9 expression has been shown to be regulated by sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) and statins similar to other genes involved in cholesterol homeostasis. The most critical finding concerning PCSK9 is that this protease is able to influence the number of LDL receptor molecules expressed on the cell surface. Studies have demonstrated that PCSK9 acts mainly by enhancing degradation of LDL receptor protein in the liver. Inactivation of PCSK9 in mice reduces plasma cholesterol levels primarily by increasing hepatic expression of LDL receptor protein and thereby accelerating clearance of circulating LDL cholesterol. The objective of this review is to summarize the current information related to the regulation and function of PCSK9 and to identify gaps in our present knowledge. 相似文献

A morphological and physiological study of an embryonic thyroid grafted in a chick embryo showed that it developed according to the endocrine status of the host. Its relative age appreciated at various stages of embryonic life is different from that of a gland developing normally during similar lengths of time. 相似文献

The tribeDrypeteae, whose traditional assignment inPhyllanthoideae ofEuphorbiaceae is now doubtful, is studied embryologically on the basis of a literature survey and examination of six additional species in two of the four constituent genera.Drypeteae are characterized by having several embryological features that are unknown in otherPhyllanthoideae, such as a two- or three-celled ovule archesporium; a thin, two cell-layered parietal layer in the nucellus; no nucellar beak or cap; an early disintegrating nucellar tissue; thick, multiplicative, inner and outer integuments; an endothelium; a few discrete vascular bundles in the outer integument; and a fibrous exotegmen (or its derived state). EmbryologicallyDrypeteae do not fit within thePhyllanthoideae and, as available nucleotide sequence data from therbcL gene suggest, are rather placed nearErythroxylaceae, Rhizophoraceae, Chrysobalanaceae, andLinaceae. Drypeteae share with those families a combination of the fibrous exotegmen, the endothelium, and the thick, multiplicative inner integument. 相似文献

The concept of effective dose with its unit, the sievert, is frequently misunderstood. Originally conceived to simplify radiation protection management, this concept is also proposed for another and very ambitions objective: a quantitative evaluation of the risks of radio-induced diseases, whatever the dose, the dose rate, the nature of radiation.... However, using the sievert for the prediction of risks of cancer or hereditary diseases is hazardous, and errors of prediction have been observed these last decades, for example the lack of prediction of the number of thyroid cancer in the very young children after the Chernobyl accident, and the overestimation of the risks such as leukaemia, other cancer and hereditary diseases. What are one sievert and its subunits? 相似文献

Ceramide phosphoethanolamine (CPE) is the major sphingolipid in invertebrates and in some bacterial species. It has been also detected in mammalian cells, although only in trace amounts. Complete understanding of the biophysical and physiological relevance of CPE is still lacking, and its biological role is still an open question. CPE differs in its biosynthetic mechanisms from sphingomyelin, due to the specific CPE synthase in invertebrates. In contrast to well-established sphingomyelin/cholesterol interactions that result in the formation of ordered membrane domains, the formation of ordered CPE/cholesterol domains is not favored. CPE might be crucial for the early development of Drosophila melanogaster, and it might be involved in the developmental stages of Trypanosoma brucei. As a Bacteroidetes-associated sphingolipid, CPE might also be involved in maintenance of these bacteria in their ecological niches. Therefore, efficient detection of CPE in biological systems is needed to better define its distribution and biological role(s). 相似文献

While coloured nectar has been known to science at least since 1785, it has only recently received focused scientific attention. However, information about this rare floral trait is scattered and hard to find. Here, we document coloured nectar in 67 taxa worldwide, with a wide taxonomical and geographical distribution. We summarise what is currently known about coloured nectar in each of the lineages where it occurs. The most common nectar colours are in the spectrum from yellow to red, but also brown, black, green, and blue colours are found. Colour intensity of the nectar varies, sometimes even within one taxa, as does the level of contrast between flower petals and nectar. Coloured nectar has evolved independently throughout the angiosperms at least 15 times at the level of family, and is in many cases correlated with one or more of three parameters: (1) vertebrate pollination, known or hypothesised, (2) insularity -- many species are from islands or insular mainland habitats, and (3) altitude -- many species are found at relatively high altitudes. We discuss the evolution and speculate on possible ecological functions of coloured nectar. Apart from being a non-functional, perhaps pleiotropic, trait, we present several hypotheses on possible ecological functions of coloured nectar. Firstly, for some plant species it can be interpreted as an honest signal, leading to high pollination efficiency. Secondly, it can function as a deterrent against nectar-thieves or inefficient pollinators, thus acting as a floral filter. Thirdly, nectar colour-pigments can have anti-microbial qualities that may protect the nectar in long-lived flowers. Neither of these possibilities are mutually exclusive. Recent studies have provided experimental evidence for the first two hypotheses, and we suggest promising avenues for future research into this little-known floral trait. 相似文献

Sphingosine-1-phosphate: an enigmatic signalling lipid 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The evolutionarily conserved actions of the sphingolipid metabolite, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), in yeast, plants and mammals have shown that it has important functions. In higher eukaryotes, S1P is the ligand for a family of five G-protein-coupled receptors. These S1P receptors are differentially expressed, coupled to various G proteins, and regulate angiogenesis, vascular maturation, cardiac development and immunity, and are important for directed cell movement. 相似文献

Histone-modifying enzymes catalyze a diverse array of post-translational modifications of core and linker histones within chromatin. These modifications govern a multitude of genomic functions, particularly gene expression, and are believed to constitute an epigenetic code. Histone-modifying enzymes inscribe this code by catalyzing site-selective modifications, which are subsequently interpreted by effector proteins that recognize specific covalent marks. The substrate specificity of these enzymes is of fundamental biological importance because it underpins this epigenetic code. Recently, the structural basis of this specificity has been examined with regards to recently determined structures of GCN5 acetyltransferases and SET domain methyltransferases in complex with their cognate histone substrates. 相似文献

In 1993, the discovery of several pairs of lyre-shaped horns with corrugations was recorded in Vietnam and regarded as evidence for a new, large bovid, later referred to as Pseudonovibos spiralis Peter & Feiler, 1994. Despite numerous field investigations made since 1994 in Vietnam and Cambodia, no new anatomical evidence has ever been found, except for two frontlets with their horn cores and horn sheaths. A new investigation has been carried out on six frontlets and based on a histological analysis of the keratin. It shows that the horns of P. spiralis are merely a skillful forgery made by carving and distorting ordinary cow horns. The horns of Pseudonovibos spiralis were, in some cases, positioned back onto the corresponding horn cores of domestic cow frontlets. The name Pseudonovibos spiralis is thus a junior synonym of Bos taurus, yet it remains valid and available. 相似文献

Transglutaminase 2 (TG2) is an inducible transamidating acyltransferase that catalyzes Ca(2+)-dependent protein modifications. It acts as a G protein in transmembrane signalling and as a cell surface adhesion mediator, this distinguishes it from other members of the transglutaminase family. The sequence motifs and domains revealed in the recent TG2 structure, can each be assigned distinct cellular functions, including the regulation of cytoskeleton, cell adhesion and cell death. Ablation of TG2 in mice results in impaired wound healing, autoimmunity and diabetes, reflecting the number and variety of TG2 functions. An important role for the enzyme in the pathogenesis of coeliac disease, fibrosis and neurodegenerative disorders has also been demonstrated, making TG2 an important therapeutic target. 相似文献

GIgantonoclea: an enigmatic Permian plant from North China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Gigantonoclea is a distinctive and enigmatic plant from the Permian of North China proper, with an unusual frond architecture and a pollen organ and vascular structure which are unique; it demonstrates a sudden rise and a rapid extinction. This paper reviews previous work on Asian gigantopterids and describes new material from the Upper Permian of Shanxi Province, including a new type of pollen organ (Jiaochengia lagrelii) and two new species of frond (Gigantonoclea crenataG. pubescens). Jiaochengia shows opposite, dissected and rather modified microsporophylls, laxly aggregating into an independent organ, which is markedly different from ‘Gigantotheca’ from Fujian. This presents evidence of heterogeneity among Asian gigantopterids and partly supports a relationship with the Carboniferous Callistophytales. Jiaochengia sporangia have what may be the first record of a waxy covering on the outer surface of a fossil plant, which is interpreted to have functioned to repel water, to protect against fungal attack and to scatter light. According to Hickey's rule, the venation of true Gigantonoclea fronds consists of three orders of main veins (rachis, midvein and secondary veins) and two orders of anastomosing veins (tertiary veins and veinlets). Certain putative ‘Gigantonoclea’ species from South China and some peripheral areas of North China do not have this type of venation and are thus excluded from the genus. Frond dimorphism is common among gigantopterids in both North and South China and can be compared with the amphibious variation from submerged to emergent leaves in extant aquatic plants. G. pubescens has a thick, bi-layered adaxial cuticle with an indumentum covering with dense papillae and trichomes bases, and deeply sunken, papillate stomata, suggesting that it favoured more arid conditions. An observed gradient from pubescent to glabrate or even glabrous gigantopterid cuticle structures between North and South China suggests a change from xeric, mesic to humid habitats. 相似文献
