The aim of the present experiment was to study the growth hormone (GH) response upon thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) challenge (2 micrograms/kg body weight) in broiler chickens selected for body weight gain (GL line: fat line) or for feed efficiency (FC line: lean line) reared at either a moderate (33-23 degrees C) or high (33 degrees C) ambient temperature. A higher plasma GH level at 5 min after TRH administration was observed in the high temperature conditioned chickens of both lines. Also at high ambient temperature, an enhanced GH decrease between 15 min and 30 min post-injection and a higher acute elimination rate was calculated compared to moderate ambient temperature. A significantly higher GH secretory response was observed in the leaner FC line chickens, which was probably related to the more pronounced pulsatory GH secretion rate in these chickens. There was no difference in GH acute elimination rate between both lines in both environments. No interactions between line and rearing temperature for these parameters of GH dynamics were observed.  相似文献

The actions of individual urocortins on colon temperature were studied in rats. Urocortin 1, urocortin 2 or urocortin 3 was injected into the lateral brain ventricle in conscious rats and the colon temperature was measured at different times following injection, for up to 6 h. In order to study the possible role of prostaglandins, the animals were treated with either a urocortin together with the pyrazolone derivative noraminophenazone to inhibit the action of cyclooxygenase in initiating hyperthermia, or with noraminophenazone 30 min following urocortin administration to act on existing hyperthermia. Noraminophenazone was administered intramuscularly in a dose of 50 mg/kg. Urocortin 1 caused a dose-related increase in colon temperature, maximal action being observed at a dose of 2 microg with the maximal increase in body temperature at 4 h. Noraminophenazone prevented the urocortin-induced increase in colon temperature and attenuated the already existing elevated body temperature. Somewhat similar action was observed with urocortin 2. However, following treatment with 0.5 or 1.0 microg urocortin 2, the action was already over at 2 h, whereas 2 microg increased the colon temperature steadily, with a maximum at 4 h. Noraminophenazone blocked or diminished the action of urocortin 2. Urocortin 3 in a dose of 1 microg was the most effective in increasing the colon temperature; the maximal effect was observed at 2 h. Noraminophenazone blocked the development of urocortin 3-induced hyperthermia, or attenuated it when the hyperthermia was already present. The results demonstrated that urocortin 1, 2 or 3 caused increases in body temperature when injected into the lateral brain ventricle, though the optimal dose and the duration of hyperthermia differed for the individual urocortins. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor blocked or diminished the action of these urocortins, indicating the involvement of prostaglandins in urocortin-induced hyperthermia.  相似文献

Body temperatures and thermoregulatory behaviour of the teiid lizard Ameiva ameiva inhabiting the edge and the understory were studied in Central Amazonian forests. Despite of differences in the thermal profile of the habitats, the mean body temperature was the same for active lizards observed at the edge or inside the forest, where only slight peculiarities in thermoregulatory behaviour were observed. A. ameiva is capable of maintaining body temperature significantly above microhabitat temperature.  相似文献

The Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, is capable of surviving a wide range of salinities and temperatures. The present study was undertaken to investigate the influence of environmental salinity and temperature on osmoregulatory ability, organic osmolytes and plasma hormone profiles in the tilapia. Fish were acclimated to fresh water (FW), seawater (SW) or double-strength seawater (200% SW) at 20, 28 or 35 degrees C for 7 days. Plasma osmolality increased significantly as environmental salinity and temperature increased. Marked increases in gill Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity were observed at all temperatures in the fish acclimated to 200% SW. By contrast, Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity was not affected by temperature at any salinity. Plasma glucose levels increased significantly with the increase in salinity and temperature. Significant correlations were observed between plasma glucose and osmolality. In brain and kidney, content of myo-inositol increased in parallel with plasma osmolality. In muscle and liver, there were similar increases in glycine and taurine, respectively. Glucose content in liver decreased significantly in the fish in 200% SW. Plasma prolactin levels decreased significantly after acclimation to SW or 200% SW. Plasma levels of cortisol and growth hormone were highly variable, and no consistent effect of salinity or temperature was observed. Although there was no significant difference among fish acclimated to different salinity at 20 degrees C, plasma IGF-I levels at 28 degrees C increased significantly with the increase in salinity. Highest levels of IGF-I were observed in SW fish at 35 degrees C. These results indicate that alterations in gill Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity and glucose metabolism, the accumulation of organic osmolytes in some organs as well as plasma profiles of osmoregulatory hormones are sensitive to salinity and temperature acclimation in tilapia.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The effect of temperature on the behavior of swimming cells of Paramecium caudatum has been investigated by photographic analyses of their tracks in uniform temperature, in temperature gradient, or in temperature changing with time. When the cells were placed in the temperature gradient, the frequency of discontinuous directional changes of cells swimming toward the optimal temperature, the temperature of the culture, was much lower than that of the cells swimming in the opposite direction. This difference in the frequency of directional changes explained the observed accumulation of the cells at - the optimal temperature. When the temperature was suddenly changed toward the optimum, a transient decrease of the frequency of directional changes was observed and when the temperature was changed in the reverse direction, a transient increase of the frequency was noted. This transient response to the temperature change was the origin of the dependence of the frequency of directional changes on the swimming direction in the temperature gradient. Finally, the relation between the magnitude of the transient response and the rate of the temperature change was derived.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on respiration of mitochondria and tissue segments from three wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and one rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivar grown at 2 and 24 C has been examined. Discontinuities in Arrhenius plots of respiratory activity against temperature were observed for mitochondria and tissue segments from seedlings grown at both temperatures. The rates of respiration decreased abruptly below the transition temperatures, resulting in increased energy of activation values for respiration. Transition temperatures were observed from 6 to 10 C during tissue segment respiration, and from 10 to 14 C during respiration by isolated mitochondria. Respiratory control and efficiency of phosphorylation were not affected markedly by either reaction temperature or growth temperature of the seedlings. No correlation was observed between the cold hardiness of the cultivars and the temperature at which structural transitions occurred in the mitochondria. Dry matter content of the seedlings increased markedly during growth at 2 C, but no appreciable changes in the levels of mitochondrial protein were observed. The results support the view that changes other than fatty acid unsaturation are involved in the abrupt change in mitochondrial membrane properties at low temperature.  相似文献

An apparatus was developed for the measurement of transpiration rates of Trifolium repens. The transpiration rates were measured under controlled conditions of soil water stress and soil temperature. Other environmental parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and air speed were held constant. Diffusive resistances were calculated and stomatal aperture changes were recorded for all treatment combinations. A significant interaction between soil water stress and soil temperature was observed for stomatal closures. Stomatal closure was observed even in the so-called wet range of soil water stress. An increase in mesophyll resistance or incipient drying was observed for several treatment combinations. The mesophyll resistance was shown to increase as soil water stress increased.  相似文献

The hypothesis that respiratory modulation due to upper airway (UA) pressure and flow is dependent on stimulus modality and respiratory phase-specific activation was assessed in anesthetized, tracheotomized, spontaneously breathing piglets. Negative pressure and flow applied to the isolated UA at room or body temperature during inspiration only enhanced posterior cricoarytenoid muscle activity from that present without UA pressure and flow (baseline) by 15--20%. Time shifting the onset of UA flow relative to tracheal flow decreased this enhancement. The same enhancement was observed with oscillatory or constant airflow. UA positive pressure and flow at room or body temperature applied during expiration only enhanced thyroarytenoid muscle activity from baseline by 50--160%. The same enhancement was observed with oscillatory or constant airflow at body temperature. Constant positive pressure and flow enhanced thyroarytenoid muscle activity more than oscillatory pressure and flow at room temperature. We conclude that the respiratory modulation of UA afferents is processed in a phase-specific fashion and is dependent on stimulus modality (tonic vs. phasic).  相似文献

Gas chromatographic analysis of extracts from Bacillus caldolyticus and Bacillus caldotenax grown at 60, 70, or 80 C showed that both contain branched-chain fatty acids as major constituents at all temperatures tested. With increasing temperature, a decrease of i-C15 and an increase of i-C17 fatty acids were observed in both strains, as well as a decrease of i-C16 fatty acids corresponding to an increase of n-C16 fatty acids. The most obvious difference was that the shifts observed with B. caldolyticus occurred mainly upon raising the temperature to 10 C above, and in B. caldotenax upon lowering the temperature to 20 C below, the optimal growth temperature.  相似文献

Endoglucanase D from Clostridium thermocellum was purified from inclusion bodies formed upon its overproduction in Escherichia coli, using 5 M urea as a solubilizing solution. We examined the effects of denaturing agents upon the stability of the pure soluble enzyme as a function of the temperature. At room temperature, guanidinium chloride induces an irreversible denaturation. By comparison, we observed no structural or functional effects at room temperature using high concentrations of urea as denaturing agent. The irreversible denaturation process observed with guanidinium chloride also occurs with urea but only at elevated temperature (greater than or equal to 60 degrees C); in 6 M urea, the activation energy of the denaturation reaction is decreased by a factor of only 1.8. We interpret the high resistance of this protein to urea as reflecting a reduced flexibility of its structure at normal temperatures which should be correlated to the thermophilic origin of this protein.  相似文献

Growth characteristics of corn stunt spiroplasma, a helical, motile mycoplasma, were studied over a range of osmolality, pH, and temperature in a simple medium containing 20% (v/v) agamma horse serum, 1.5% (w/v) PPLO broth, and various concentrations of sucrose. The spiroplasma was able to grow in a wide spectrum of osmolalities from 360 to 1120 mosm. Optimal growth was observed in media that contained 0.25-0.35 M sucrose. The organism became longer and thinner in media adjusted to 0.65 M sucrose or more. The spiroplasma lost helicity and motility immediately after transfer to media at pH 5.4 or lower. Optimal pH for growth was 7.2. No growth was observed at pH lower than 5.4 or higher than 8.0. Optimal temperature for growth was 32 degrees C. Very little or no growth was observed at temperatures lower than 15 degrees C or higher than 35 degrees C.  相似文献

We investigated the phenotypic plasticity of sternopleural bristle (SB) number as a function of growth temperature in isofemale lines from temperate (France) and tropical (Congo) populations of Drosophila melanogaster. We found concave reaction norms with a maximum in the middle of the thermal range, except in four African lines which exhibited a regularly decreasing response curve. Genetic variability (intraclass correlation) and evolvability (genetic CV, coefficient of variation) were independent properties and did not change with temperature. Residual, within-line variability was, however, strongly influenced by growth temperature, showing a U-shaped response curve and a minimum CV of 9% at 21.5 degrees C. As expected from a previously known latitudinal cline, maximum values (MV) were higher in temperate than in tropical flies. The temperature of maximum value (TMV) was observed at a higher temperature in the tropical population, in agreement with similar adaptive trends already observed for other quantitative traits. Significant negative correlations within each population were observed between a plasticity curvature parameter and MV or TMV. No difference in curvature was, however, observed between populations, in spite of their very different MVs.  相似文献

Administration of naloxone to morphine-dependent rats results in an elevation of tail skin temperature and a fall in core temperature. Previous studies have demonstrated a role of the adrenal gland in the thermal responses that accompany morphine withdrawal in the rat. In the present study, experiments were designed to determine if the duration of adrenalectomy significantly influenced the thermal response observed in morphine withdrawal. In addition we evaluated the influence of the adrenal medulla and glucocorticoid replacement in adrenalectomized rats in mediating the thermal responses of the morphine-dependent rat. Ovariectomized rats were addicted to morphine and subsequently withdrawn by administration of naloxone. This treatment results in a significant rise in tail skin temperature and subsequent fall in colonic temperature. These thermal responses were not observed in morphine-naive rats. Adrenalectomy resulted in a significant attenuation of the rise in tail skin temperature associated with withdrawal. This reduced tail skin temperature response was not different among animals adrenalectomized for 1, 7, 14, 21, or 28 days. Likewise, the moderate increase in core temperature associated with morphine treatment was not observed in the adrenalectomized rats. Serum corticosteroid determinations confirmed the loss of the adrenal steroids in the adrenalectomized rats. In a subsequent experiment it was determined that adrenal demedullation did not reduce the tail skin temperature response during morphine withdrawal, and corticosteroids restored the naloxone-induced surge in tail skin temperature in morphine-dependent, adrenalectomized rats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The amount of epsilon-N-monomethyllysine in ribosomal proteins L7 and L12 in Escherichia coli is dependent upon the cell growth temperature. At 37 degrees C or above, very small amounts were detected. The main phase transition (Tm) of 100 nm large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) of 1,2-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) was investigated using 1H NMR (proton magnetic resonance) in deuterium oxide, and both DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and IR (infrared) spectroscopy in water and deuterium oxide. The ability of 1H NMR to determine Tm was demonstrated and the values obtained were in general agreement with those observed with DSC and IR. However, the temperature range of the transition observed by NMR was significantly broader than that observed with either DSC or IR. The effect of deuterium oxide on Tm was studied by comparing results obtained in water and deuterium oxide with DSC and IR. The results showed no significant difference in Tm or temperature range of transition determined in these solvents.  相似文献

Intraventricular (ivt) injections of sub-cataleptic doses of β endorphin in rats were observed to result in wet-dog shakes. Subsequent to the wet-dog shakes, copious salivation accompanied by a clonic, seizure-like state was occasionally observed to occur. This sialogogic effect of β endorphin was blocked by naloxone and diminished by injections of thyrotropin releasing hormone. None of these behaviors were observed following ivt injection of morphine in equi-antinociceptive doses. Furthermore, hypophysectomy was observed to attenuate or block these behaviors. Both the wet-dog shakes and “sialogogic seizures” were demonstrated to be dependent upon dose as well as ambient temperature. It appears possible that the occurrence of initial wet-dog shakes may result in the elevated body temperature which then precipitates excess salivation. Since both β endorphin induced wet-dog shakes and salivation were shown to be correlated with alterations in temperature, it is possible that these effects of β endorphin indicate a physiological role for that peptide in thermoregulation.  相似文献

On addition of cytochrome c to a AOT reverse micellar solution, the percolation process usually observed at high temperatures and surfactant concentrations, occurs at room temperature. This is observed either at relatively high water content at a given cytochrome c concentration or at low content on increasing the cytochrome c concentration. On increasing the water content a phase transition is observed with two optically transparent phases. A similar phase transition is observed on solubilizing various enzymes. Varicocele is considered to be responsible for male infertility by several authors, while varicocele may also exist in fertile men. Hyperthermia or “raised” testicular temperature is one of the pathophysiological mechanisms proposed to explain impaired spermatogenesis when a varicocele is present in infertile men. The reported clinical data in humans and experimental results of surgically-induced varicocele in animals indicate the following findings. In most studies, mean testicular and scrotal temperatures are bilaterally increased in populations of men with unilateral left varicocele compared to control populations. Similar results are observed following surgical induction of experimental left varicocele in animals. In the case of bilateral varicocele, the increase in mean temperature is similar to that observed in unilateral varicocele. Data concerning the effects of varicocelectomy on testicular or scrotal temperatures are still inconclusive in humans because of the discordant results in the small number of studies dealing with this topic. However, experimental data indicate that varicocelectomy results in recovery of normal mean temperature in animals submitted to surgically-induced varicocele, but experimental animal models of varicocele have failed to provide any explanation for the increase in temperature. In conclusion, although there is a relationship between varicocele and testicular temperature, testicular temperature is not increased in every case of varicocele.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effect of various temperature regimes on embryonic and yolk-sac larval development of the burbot Lota lota. At constant temperature regimes a high percentage of ready-to-hatch embryos, hatched larvae and normally shaped larvae was observed at the lowest temperature (2° C), which significantly decreased with increasing temperatures (4 and 6° C). No larvae hatched at 9° C. The stream temperature regime had no effect on the percentage of ready-to-hatch embryos, but significantly decreased the percentage of hatched larvae and of normally shaped larvae. The lake temperature regime did not affect the viability variables. Also an abrupt temperature increase from 2 to 4° C after 8 days and from 2 to 9° C after 48 days had no effect on the evaluated viability variables. For yolk-sac larvae no temperature related mortalities or abnormalities were observed between 2 and 9° C.  相似文献

Existing models for the accumulation of photoperiodic information (the photoperiodic "counter") cannot explain satisfactorily the various effects of temperature on diapause induction in insects and mites, nor the observation that in several insect species the so-called "required day number" has a high degree of temperature compensation. In the model presented in this paper the effect of temperature has been incorporated in such a way that both the rate of increase of the "induction sum" (or "diapause titre") and the level of the "minimally required induction sum" (or "threshold level") are temperature dependent. The proposed model is in accordance with observed temperature effects, and gives an explanation for a temperature-compensated "required day number".  相似文献
