During October to December 1997, we trawled estuarine habitats in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf (JBG) to determine the distribution of juvenile red-legged banana prawns, Penaeus indicus (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) and white banana prawns, Penaeus merguiensis (de Man, 1888). We made 229 beam-trawls at 185 sites, mostly over a 100-m path (3-min duration). A Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver was used to verify our location. During October to December 1998, we intensively resampled three of the rivers that were sampled in 1997 to confirm the gulf-wide distribution of P. indicus and P. merguiensis and to investigate the microhabitat use of P. indicus. We chose previously sampled and new sites in Forsyth Creek (eastern JBG), the Lyne River (Cambridge Gulf), and the Berkeley River (western JBG). We made 249 trawls at 21 sites, mostly over 100 m.Juvenile banana prawns were abundant in eastern JBG, Cambridge Gulf and western JBG. They were not abundant in southern JBG, although fewer trawls were made there, due to its inaccessibility. In eastern JBG and Cambridge Gulf, over 96% and 73% (respectively) of juvenile banana prawns were P. indicus and they were more abundant there than in the western JBG. Conversely, in the western JBG over 93% of the juvenile banana prawns were P. merguiensis and they were more abundant than in the eastern JBG and Cambridge Gulf. The Lyne River in the northwestern Cambridge Gulf seems to be the transition zone; both P. indicus and P. merguiensis are equally abundant.P. indicus are most abundant on the mangrove-lined muddy banks of waterways within mangrove forests, similar habitats to P. merguiensis. Within these habitats, they were most abundant in gutters and small creeks, rather than rivers and large creeks. Few P. indicus or P. merguiensis were caught in 100 m2 trawls undertaken midriver (on the channel bottom and on emergent banks), although these habitats may be only 100 m from the mangrove-lined habitats. In all creek and river habitats, both species are most catchable at low tide (irrespective of daylight or darkness) when they move out of the mangrove forests and accumulate in the remnant water bodies.The offshore fishery for P. indicus is in northwestern JBG in waters 50-80 m deep, about 300 and 200 km, respectively, from where juveniles are abundant in their extensive inshore habitats in east JBG and in Cambridge Gulf, demonstrating a geographical separation of the juvenile and adult phases. Postlarval P. indicus, spawned offshore, must use tides and currents to travel south and east to reach nursery habitats. Emigrant subadults must migrate north and west, across relatively shallow inshore sand substrates (30-40 m deep) to reach their offshore habitats.  相似文献

Short-term (daily) and seasonal variations in concentration and flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were examined over 15 tidal cycles in a riverine mangrove wetland along Shark River, Florida in 2003. Due to the influence of seasonal rainfall and wind patterns on Shark River’s hydrology, samplings were made to include wet, dry and transitional (Norte) seasons. We used a flume extending from a tidal creek to a basin forest to measure vertical (vegetated soil/water column) and horizontal (mangrove forest/tidal creek) flux of DOC. We found significant (p < 0.05) variations in surface water temperature, salinity, conductivity, pH and mean concentration of DOC with season. Water temperature and salinity followed seasonal patterns of air temperature and rainfall, while mean DOC concentration was highest during the dry season (May), followed by the wet (October) and ‘Norte’ (December) seasons. This pattern of DOC concentration may be due to a combination of litter production and inundation pattern of the wetland. In contrast to daily (between tides) variation in DOC flux between the mangrove forest and tidal creek, daily variations of mean water quality were not significant. However, within-tide variation of DOC flux, dissolved oxygen content and salinity was observed. This indicated that the length of inundation and water source (freshwater vs. saltwater) variation across tidal cycles influenced water quality and DOC flux in the water column. Net DOC export was measured in October and December, suggesting the mangrove forest was a source of DOC to the adjacent tidal creek during these periods. Net annual export of DOC from the fringe mangrove to both the tidal creek and basin mangrove forest was 56 g C m−2 year−1. The seasonal pattern in our flux results indicates that DOC flux from this mangrove forest may be governed by both freshwater discharge and tidal range.  相似文献

The nursery function of mangroves as shelter has been postulated to explain the positive correlation between shrimp catches and mangrove area. This study was undertaken to document shelter use and other activities in mangrove‐associated penaeids and to determine diel and size differences relating to these activities. Juvenile Metapenaeus ensis, Penaeus latisulcatus and P. merguiensis collected from mangrove areas in Guimaras, central Philippines and stocked individually in glass tanks (= replicates) provided with artificial shelters and sand substrate were observed every hour for 25 h. Size classes tested were very small (1–5.9 mm carapace length); small (6–10.9mm CL); medium (11–15.9mm CL); large (16–20.9mm CL); and very large (21–25.9 mm CL). Due to limited juvenile supply, only 3 sizes were tested for each species: P. merguiensis (very small to medium), M. ensis (small to large) and P. latisulcatus (medium to very large) with 5 replicate animals (one per tank) per size. Juvenile M. ensis and P. latisulcatus showed a strong diel periodicity of daytime burial and nocturnal activity. In contrast, P. merguiensis showed active swimming and feeding throughout the day and night. Very small to small P. merguiensis were observed on the shelters, but burying was exhibited only by a few medium‐sized juveniles. This shelter use is consistent with observations of small P. merguiensis entering the mangrove forest (where roots, twigs, etc. contribute to structural complexity) on the flood tide and concentrating in the shallow, turbid waters of adjoining creeks during ebb tide and slack water.  相似文献

Although urban development impacts wetlands around the world, until now there have been no studies of its effects on coastal wetlands in tropical regions of developed countries such as Australia. In fact the ecological value of such wetlands is poorly understood. This study provides an initial step in evaluating the ecological value of urbanised, tropical coastal wetlands by determining (a) the extent to which a remnant wetland, in a highly urbanised estuary in northern Australia, is used by juvenile commercial penaeid shrimps, and (b) the extent to which the shrimps rely on food chains based on wetland plants versus marine based food chains. Juvenile penaeids were abundant in the 11 wetland pools sampled. Catches included 5 commercial penaeids with two species, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis and Metapenaeus bennetae, comprising half the catch. Densities in the wetland pools were usually substantially higher than in adjacent estuarine habitats. Stable isotope analysis indicated that much of the nutrition of juvenile shrimps was supplied by marine primary producers (phytoplankton, epiphytic and epilithic algae, microphytobenthos, green filamentous algae) however the locally abundant saltmarsh grass Sporobolus virginicus was also a major contributor. In contrast, there was little indication of nutritional support from mangrove carbon. The lack of importance of mangrove carbon is surprising because the catches of F. merguiensis are often closely linked to the area or extent of mangroves, suggesting that aspects of mangrove systems other than the supply of mangrove carbon may determine the distribution of juvenile F. merguiensis.  相似文献

The effects of fish predators, light phase, habitat structure and prawn size on the habitat preferences of juvenile Penaeus (Fenneropenaeus) merguiensis de Man were examined with laboratory experiments. The behaviour of juvenile P. merguiensis within habitats of different structural complexity was also examined. Experiments were carried out in a tank (1.8 m diameter) divided into four habitats representing: bare substratum, leaf litter (little vertical structure), mangrove pneumatophores (regular vertical structure) and mangrove woody debris (heterogeneous vertical structure). The location of 10 prawns was monitored over 270 min (135 min light and 135 min dark), with different prawns five times for each combination of prawn size class, and predator (no predator; Arius graeffei Kner and Steindachner and Lates calcarifer Bloch).In the absence of predators and during the light phase, when observations on prawn behaviour were made, swimming was the most common behaviour (of seven mutually exclusive behavioural categories) with few differences in behaviour between sizes. All size classes of juvenile P. merguiensis selected vertical structure (mangrove debris and pneumatophores) over low vertical structure (leaf litter and bare substratum), in both light and dark conditions and in the presence or absence of predators. When L. calcarifer was present, the selection by prawns of the mangrove-debris habitat increased significantly. This was attributed to an increase in predation risk in the other habitats. L. calcarifer rarely pursued prey amongst the mangrove-debris structure, compared to habitats with less heterogeneous vertical structure (pneumatophores, leaf litter and bare substratum).  相似文献

The temporal distribution patterns of the predominantly occurring postlarvae and juvenile shrimps in the mangrove and associated habitats of Muthupet, India were investigated for two years from February 1984 to January 1986. Among the eight commercially important species recorded, Penaeus indicus H. Milne Edwards, P. merguiensis De Man, P. monodon Fabricus and Metapenaeus dobsoni (Miers) were predominant. The postlarval recruitment size variedwith species: P. indicus and P. merguiensis recruited at the size of 9–11 mm total length (TL), P. monodon at 12–14 mm TL and M. dobsoni at 4–6 mm TL. The species P. indicus, P. merguiensis and M. dobsoni were observed continuously throughout the study period with maximum abundance occurring from July to September in 1984–85 and from August through October in 1985–86. P. monodon occurred seasonally from November to January in both years. Postlarvae and juvenile catches were low during low salinity and high salinity periods and a higher density was observed in the months of moderate water salinity. Large numbers of P. indicus, P. merguiensis and M. dobsoni clearly showed the preference to the detritus rich muddy substrate, whereas P. monodon did not show any preference and was equally abundant over different substrate types.  相似文献

Although water in mangrove sediments influences nutrient cycling in both, mangrove forest and estuary, little information exists on seasonal and vertical distribution of dissolved organic and inorganic compounds in the sediment column. We studied the influence of sediment texture and chemistry, permeability (K), tides, and rainfall on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) and salinity in creek and sediment waters of a mangrove in Pará, Brazil. Water samples were taken from boreholes and piezometers in the mangrove forest and from an adjacent tidal creek at neap and spring tides, during the dry and rainy season. Forest sediment was analysed for carbon (C), nitrogen (N), salinity and permeability. Clay, C and N decreased with depth. Sediment permeability (K) was lowest (<0.1 m day−1) in the upper, clay-rich and crab-burrow-free mud layer. In the deeper, fine sand strata, K ranged from 0.7 to 1.8 m day−1. Tidal range in the creek was 3.5 and 5.5 m for neap and spring tides, respectively. Salinity, DOC, DON and DIP in creek water were inversely related to tidal height. Piezometer data revealed significant water level changes in deeper, sandy sediment layer, which followed, time-lagged, the tidal fluctuations. In contrast, tide did not affect the water level in the upper sediment due to low permeability. Compared with creek water, sediment water was enriched in DOC, DON and DIP because of organic matter input and mineralization. In deeper layers, solute concentration was most likely affected by sorption processes (DOC and DIP) and reduction reactions (DIP). During the rainy season, DOC and DON in creek and sediment water were higher than in the dry season. DIP appeared invariant to seasonal changes. In the rainy season, salt flushing from surface sediments resulted in higher salinities at intermediate sediment depths, while in the deeper layers salinity was lower due to exchange with water from the tidal creek.  相似文献

We model the dynamics of a tidal creek — mangrove swamp system. In the creek, a tidal asymmetry prevails. The ebb flow dominance at spring tides helps flush out the coarse sediment from the creek. Results from the numerical model suggest that the ebb dominance is due to friction in the mangrove forest and in turn this is controlled by the density of the vegetation. The tidal asymmetry of the current is negligible for a very small or a very large vegetation density, and is maximum for an intermediate vegetation density typical of that in undisturbed healthy mangroves.  相似文献

Migrational patterns of mangrove jack Lutjanus argentimaculatus were studied in a mangrove estuary in Trang province, Thailand, using ultrasonic telemetry. Ultrasonic coded transmitters were surgically implanted in 18 fish and 16 of them were subsequently monitored by nine fixed receivers installed along Sikao Creek estuary in June and November 2006. Due to technical limitations all of the individuals were released in the middle of the creek. Their movements were monitored for a period of up to 1 month, the data being used to describe short term migration of juvenile Lutjanus argentimaculatus in the creek and to find possible environmental cues for the observed movements. All of the individuals showed a tide related movement pattern, suggesting foraging in the small mangrove channels and/or mangrove forest during high tides. 50% of the fish left the study area for the open coast area within a short time following release, indicating that a part of juvenile L. argentimaculatus may move in between estuarine habitats instead of being site attached. As the fish were reared in fish cages for a certain period of time before the study this behavior could partly be explained by the time spent in captivity. It was found that L. argentimaculatus showed higher movement activity during night high tides possibly explained by an increased availability of the sough after food items.  相似文献

The behavior of groundwater and physical properties of bottom sediment in a riverine-type mangrove forest which is composed of a tidal creek and fringing mangrove swamps were investigated through field observations at Iriomote Island, Japan. After the tidal water ebbed from the swamp surface to the creek, groundwater levels at swamp sites near the creek fell by up to 15 cm by the next flood tide, although the fall was negligible at sites far from the creek and at the open coast outside the mangrove forest. The amount of groundwater discharged to the creek from the swamp depended strongly both on the tidal range and the presence of the steep bank which separates the tidal creek from the fringing mangrove swamp. Based on the fall of groundwater level, the bulk hydraulic conductivity of the swamp was estimated to be 1.5×10−2 cm/s. This value is two to three orders of magnitude larger than that measured in a laboratory using small scale sediment core samples collected in the swamp. These results suggest that the presence of crowded, intricate and large animal burrows as well as sediment layers rich in mangrove humus increases permeability in the mangrove swamp. Further, it is suggested that the mangrove topography with the steep bank of the tidal creek plays an important role which enhances material exchanges through groundwater between the mangrove swamp and the adjacent offshore waters.  相似文献

Tidal creeks are an important structure of salt marshes in estuarine ecosystems, providing valuable ecosystem services to wildlife in the estuary. To determine the effects of environmental heterogeneities within tidal creeks on the features of crab burrows, we divided a typical creek section into four parts (i.e., microhabitats): bottom, slope, edge and flat, investigated the distribution of crab burrows and sediment properties on creek sections in the Yangtze River estuary, and compared the burrow distribution in tidal creeks with that in non-creek areas. Our results showed that from the creek bottom to flat soil water content declined (F3, 60 = 93.8, p < 0.001), and the variations of other sediment physical and chemical properties associated with the change of soil water content were significant among the microhabitats on the creek sections (p < 0.001 for pH, conductivity, and grain size). No crab burrows were found at the creek bottom. The burrows on the slope were smaller in size (p < 0.001 for burrow opening diameter) while the density was higher than that at the edge and on the flat (F2, 45 = 31.2, p < 0.001). Moreover, although the correlations between burrow distribution and sediment properties varied among the microhabitats on the creek sections, crabs generally selected relatively solid sediments to build their burrows. On the slope, there was a significantly negative relationship between burrow density and soil water content (r2 = 0.53, p < 0.001). At the edge, the correlation between total burrow opening area and soil water content was significantly negative (r2 = 0.44, p < 0.002). The density of small crab burrows (<10 mm) was greater, but that of large burrows (>10 mm) was lower in tidal creeks than in non-creek habitats. Therefore, sediment properties showed a gradual transition from hydrophytic to terrestrial environments on the creek section, which caused significant differences of burrow distribution among the microhabitats. The creeks of tidal salt marshes could affect ecological processes and functioning through affecting crab burrows.  相似文献

The results of a beach seine survey of an East African mangrove creek are presented. The fish community of the creek is described and is compared with that of a nearby lagoonal site and with those described for other mangrove and estuarine systems. The species composition was found to differ substantially between the creek and the lagoon site, though diversity indices for the two areas were similar. Eighty-three species of teleost fish werecollected from the mangrove area of the creek. This number is considered high in relation to comparable studies and is attributed to the constant high salinity (approximately 35%o) measured throughout the study period. Approximately 90% of the fish caught were juveniles. Plankton sampling was also carried out and representatives of 21 fish families were collected as larvae within the creek. Catches from both beach seining and plankton sampling in the mangrove areas were dominated numerically by resident clupeid and gobiid species. The majority of species, however, were considered to have a widespread distribution as adults. A discrepancy between the catch composition of larvae and juveniles suggests that species that use the creek as a nursery area enter the system principally at a post-larval/ juvenile stage of development. No systematic spatial or temporal variation in the community structure was identified over the study period.  相似文献

Expansion of the monospecific mangrove, Kandelia obovata, has converted intertidal mudflats and other habitats into mangrove forests, thus reducing estuarine biodiversity in the Danshuei River estuary, northern Taiwan. Dense mangrove vegetation was removed to create a small patchwork of mudflats and a tidal creek in February 2007. Subsequent changes in sediment properties and biodiversity of the macrobenthos and avian communities were examined. The results showed that the creation of different habitats led to changes in sediment properties and biodiversity. The water content and sorting degree of the sediments differed significantly among the restored mudflat, the tidal creek, and the mangrove control site. Silt/clay, organic carbon content, and chlorophyll a concentrations varied seasonally, but not among sites. The abundance of polychaetes in the creek was greater than that in the mudflat or the mangrove (12.5 vs. 5.3 and 2.2 individuals/m2, respectively), suggesting preferential colonization of infaunal polychaetes in habitats with prolonged submersion. Crabs showed seasonal changes in density, with higher densities in summer than in autumn and winter. The species richness of wintering shorebirds on the created mudflat increased dramatically from 2002 to 2007. The transformation of a vegetated area into an open mudflat appeared to benefit shorebirds by providing roosting habitat. Our study demonstrated that controlling the spread of estuarine mangrove forests could increase biodiversity, and could particularly benefit the migratory shorebird community.  相似文献

A digital elevation model describing topography, tide elevation and inundation degree and frequency of a mangrove forest in North Brazil is discussed in relation to existing phosphate and physicochemical data in waters of an adjacent tidal creek. Due to smooth topography, an increase of 20 cm in tidal height above average neap tides increases flooded area from about 50 to 80%. Analysis of the relationship between microtopography, tidal height and flooding rate showed that in the upper 60 cm of the mangrove forest, increases of 20 cm in topographical height resulted in a doubling of the inundation frequency. This can be particularly relevant for the analysis of nutrient mobilization and vegetation structure of infrequently inundated wetlands. Throughout the year, low-tide phosphate in creek water was inversely proportional to the maximum area flooded during high tide, this correlation being higher during the dry season. Similarly, the inverse relationship between flooded areas and low-tide/high-tide pH ratios was highly significant during the dry season and the beginning of the rainy season. Although the high correlations obtained are based on data pairs obtained at high and low tide, it has to clarified whether the association between inundation degree and creek water pH is relevant for the stability of P compounds in sediment on the short scale of a tidal cycle.  相似文献

Macrophytes drive the functioning of many salt marsh ecosystem components. We questioned how temporary clearing of the macrophyte community, during restoration, would impact processes at the scale of the aquatic surface microlayer. Development, deposition, and breakup of the tidal creek surface microlayer were followed over tidal cycles seasonally in a cleared “former” Phragmites marsh and an adjacent restored Spartina marsh. Metabolic and physical processes of the mobile surface microlayers and underlying water were compared, along with distribution of organic and inorganic components onto simulated plant stems. In July and October, chlorophyll-a quantities were less on simulated stems in the cleared site than in the restored site. The aquatic microlayer in the cleared site creek exhibited lower photosynthesis and respiration rates, fewer diatoms and green algae, and less chlorophyll-a. There was a lower concentration (250 times) and reduced diversity of fatty acids in the surface microlayer of the cleared site, reflecting a smaller and less diverse microbial community and reduced food resources. Fiddler crab activity was an order of magnitude higher where macrophytes had been cleared. Their consumption of edaphic algae on the mud surface may account for the reduced algae and other organics in the creek surface microlayer, thus representing a redirection of this food resource from creek consumers. Overall, there were less total particulates in the creek surface microlayer at the cleared site, and they dropped out of the surface microlayer sooner in the tidal cycle, resulting in a lower sediment load available for deposit onto marsh surfaces.  相似文献

Temporal patterns of larval occurrence of brachyuran taxa weredescribed from Saco mangrove creek, Mozambique, based on planktonsamples. Brachyuran larvae were collected hourly in four 24h cycles during neap and spring tidal periods at a fixed station,in November 1997 and February 1998. Results indicate a semilunarcycle of larval release activity for most species. Newly-hatchedstages of sesarmids showed a peak occurrence in post-crepuscularebbing tides, Macrophthalmus spp. and Uca spp. showed highestdensities during ebbing tides at night. Dotilla fenestrata andPinnotheridae, in spite of showing a semilunar pattern, didnot display significant differences between day and night. Mostmangrove taxa showed thus a clear larval exportation behaviourduring ebb tides, with little return during the following floods,with varying degrees of dependence on the diel period. Megalopaewere restricted to the night period, and highest values wereobtained during spring tidal periods. However, maximum valuesof megalopae were obtained both during flood and ebb periods,contrary to most previous studies. This is interpreted as abi-directional transport of non-competent megalopae into andfrom the mangrove area.  相似文献

Abstract

Annual catches of pelagic organisms, excluding marine mammals, from the Atlantic and Pacific waters surrounding the Americas for the period 1969–1971 averaged 17, 000, 000 metric tons. Catches of the pelagic organisms from the Pacific alone were nearly 14, 000, 000 tons. However, considering the recent drop in the catches of the Peruvian anchovy, the data for 1972 and 1973 when compiled, will show a drastic decline in the catches of pelagic species. Catches from American waters are compared with those from other waters and their relationship to the area and population of the Americas is examined. The potential maximum catch of pelagic organisms currently utilized is projected to 26, 000, 000 tons, whereas if the markets and fishing technology could be developed for non‐conventional species, then it is estimated that the catch could be increased to 42, 000, 000 tons. Rational utilization of the pelagic resources of the Americas necessitates conservational and managerial measures. This in turn calls for international agreements and/or other international arrangements. In the present study the tidal transport of macrolitter between the mangrove forest in Gazi bay (Kenya) and the adjacent seagrass meadows in the bay was investigated, by deploying large standing nets, which extended over the entire height of the water column, in the transition zone between both ecosystems. In addition, the presence of macrolitter on the floor ofRhizophora mucronata andCeriops tagal stands was studied. The macromaterial (>2 mm) that was collected with the nets consisted of mangrove material (26%, mostly leaf material), seagrass leaves (60%) and macroalgae (14%). Transport was bidirectional, indicating shuttle movements of the litter, driven by the opposite flow direction of flood and ebb tides. Litter from the mangrove species consisted mainly of leaves from species occurring at the outer zone of the forest,i.e., Rhizophora mucronata andSonneratia alba. This finding suggests that the complex spatial structure of the forest hampers outflow of macrolitter from the more inner parts. Consequently, this material remains trapped within the forest. The dominant presence of seagrass litter in the macromaterial transported with the tidal water, and the conspicuous and persistent presence of seagrass litter in the low lying, peripheralR. mucronata plots (but not in the more elevatedC. tagal plots) suggest that the mangrove forest of Gazi bay is the recipient of carbon and nutrients from the seagrass system. It is hypothesized that the element cycling of the inner parts of the mangrove forest proceeds as that of a rather closed system, whereas element cycling in the outer parts has conspicuous reciprocal connections with the adjacent seagrass meadows.  相似文献

We report on various species of nitrogen in subsurface water samples taken at the mouth of Sungai Sementa Besar, a creek about 4.5 km long off the Straits of Malacca and draining a mangrove forest on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. This tide-dominated watercourse shows a range greater than 4.5 metres from low to high water during springs, only 1.0 m during neaps, and salinities at the mouth of 30 or greater. After heavy rains or when the tides inundate the forest floor, inorganic nitrogen values increase as much as tenfold at the mouth. Particulate and total organic nitrogen also increase at the mouth under these conditions. There were also comparative highs of organic inputs at other times.  相似文献
