The effect of native plant restoration on invasion by giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida), an invasive species, is currently unknown. We hypothesized that (1) functional group identity would be a good predictor of biotic resistance to A. trifida, and (2) mixtures of species would be more resistant to invasion than monocultures. Using seven functional traits, 37 native and non-native plants were divided into three functional groups that differed primarily in longevity and woodiness. We conducted a competition experiment using an additive competition design with A. trifida and monocultures or mixtures of 14 species. Biotic resistance was evaluated by calculating a relative competition index (RCIavg) based on the average performance of A. trifida in treatments compared with that in control. In monocultures, RCIavg of resident plants did not significantly differ among the three functional groups or within each functional group. The highest RCIavg (40%) was observed for some fast-growing annuals (FG1) such as Zea mays and Secale cereal, which were strong competitors. RCIavg of resident plants was not significantly greater in mixtures than in monocultures. Taken together, the results show that plant diversity did not control invasion by A. trifida and that giant ragweed invasion cannot be well controlled by biotic resistance.  相似文献

Ponto-Caspian gammarids have invaded European waters, affecting local communities by predation and competition. Their ranges and dispersal rates vary across Europe, which may result from their interspecific interactions, accelerating or reducing migrations. We checked this hypothesis by testing interference competition among co-occurring invaders: Dikerogammarus villosus, D. haemobaphes and Pontogammarus robustoides. We used 140-cm long tanks (gravel substratum), divided into seven compartments. We introduced 25 “residents” into the outermost compartment, separated with a barrier. After 1 h, we introduced 25 “intruders”. After the next 1 h, we removed the barrier and the gammarids dispersed in the tank. After 4 or 20 h, we counted the gammarids in the compartments. We tested all pairwise species combinations and single-species controls. Dikerogammarus villosus displaced other species (P. robustoides only after 4 h) and reduced its own motility after 20 h in their presence. Pontogammarus robustoides stimulated the short-time migrations of D. villosus intruders and of D. haemobaphes. As P. robustoides migrated spontaneously much more than Dikerogammarus spp., its impact decreased after longer time. Dikerogammarus haemobaphes stimulated the short-time movement of P. robustoides intruders but reduced the long-time relocation of this species. In general, gammarid dispersal increased in the presence of stronger competitors (D. villosus and P. robustoides, especially residents) and decreased in response to weaker competitors (D. haemobaphes). Thus, competitive interactions may affect dispersal of invasive gammarids and contribute to the fastest spread of the weakest competitor, D. haemobaphes observed in the field, whereas the strongest species, D. villosus was the latest newcomer in many novel areas.  相似文献

Reproductive success demands both the male and female reaching a particular physiological status, which is usually stimulated in rodents by certain olfactory signals. The hormonal response of male Eversmann’s hamster (Allocricetulus eversmanni) to the natural excretions (urine, midventral gland secretion (MVGS) of conspecific females was studied during several seasons of the year, with the animals kept in conditions of natural lighting and temperature. In the fall, no reliable changes in the testosterone level in males in response to any signal presented were noted. In the winter and spring, a reliable (P< 0.05) increase in the testosterone level was caused by the female MVGS odor. In the summer, a similar reaction only to conspecific female urine (P< 0.05) was noted. Moreover, in the summer and fall, males showed a reliable decrease in the cortisol level in response to the odor of female urine (P< 0.05). In the winter and spring, a similar result was caused by exposure to both odors. The progesterone level in males reliably (P< 0.05) increased upon exposure to both female urine and MVGS in all seasons of the year, except for the female MVGS in the summer. Therefore, the decreased cortisol level in combination with the simultaneously increased testosterone and progesterone levels allow the males of the species under study to achieve their maximum reproductive success, despite the high degree of their intraspecific aggression.  相似文献

The mutual effects of several fouling species (the bivalves Mytilus edulis and Hiatella arctica and a solitary ascidian Styela rustica) on their growth rate and mortality were studied through field experiments. The interactions between S. rustica and H. arctica appeared to be the least antagonistic. In contrast, the mussel was the most “aggressive” species with regard to both competitors. It was observed that the ascidians died, because they were intensively braided and gummed up with the byssus threads of the mussels. However, in some cases the intraspecific competition was stronger than the interspecific one.  相似文献

Australoheros facetus is a neotropical cichlid and an exotic species in the Guadiana and Odelouca basins (Southern Portugal). In this research, we aimed to characterize the main behavioural patterns and circulating hormones, 17β-estradiol (E2) for females, and testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) and cortisol for both sexes, during the formation of social groups, a crucial step in the life-history of A. facetus. A pair-breeding strategy with territorial behaviour and aggressive interactions was found, with a positive correlation between dominance and size for both sexes. There were no significant differences between non-territorial and territorial individuals in the baseline levels of hormones, but 11KT was higher in males when they became territorial, as E2 for territorial females, while there was no clear pattern for testosterone. In contrast, cortisol was higher in non-territorial males and correlated negatively with social dominance. These results suggest that size is the main driver for social dominance and that formation of stable hierarchies result in higher circulating 11KT and lowers stress in territorial males. Related to A. facetus’ behaviour, aggressiveness and biparental care may be an advantage during the invasion process of A. facetus, facilitating colonization of new habitats.  相似文献

Organisms are adapted to recognize environmental cues that can provide information about predation risk or competition. Non-vagrant eriophyoid mites mainly avoid predation by using habitats that are difficult for predators to access (galls or confined spaces in plants) such as the meristematic region of the coconut fruit, which is inhabited by the phytophagous mites Aceria guerreronis and Steneotarsonemus concavuscutum. The objective of this study was to investigate the response of A. guerreronis to cues from the predators Neoseiulus baraki and Amblyseius largoensis in coconut fruits, cues from conspecifics (A. guerreronis injured) and cues from the phytophage S. concavuscutum. The test was carried out through the release of about 300 A. guerreronis on coconut fruits previously treated with cues from predators, conspecific or heterospecific phytophagous. We also observed the walking behaviour of A. guerreronis exposed to the same chemical cues using a video tracking system. The infestation of fruits by A. guerreronis was greater in the presence of predator cues and reduced in the presence of S. concavuscutum cues, but cues from injured conspecifics did not interfere in the infestation process. In addition, the cues also altered the walking parameters of A. guerreronis: it walked more in response to cues from predators and the heterospecific phytophage. Aceria guerreronis spent more time in activity in the treatments with clues than in the control treatment. These results suggest that A. guerreronis recognizes cues from predators and competitors and modifies its behaviour to increase its fitness.  相似文献

This field study investigated the release of testosterone and cortisol of a vicarious winning experience in Spanish fans watching the finals between Spain and the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer. Spanish fans (n = 50) watched the match with friends or family in a public place or at home and also participated in a control condition. Consistent with hypotheses, results revealed that testosterone and cortisol levels were higher when watching the match than on a control day. However, neither testosterone nor cortisol levels increased after the victory of the Spanish team. Moreover, the increase in testosterone secretion was not related to participants' sex, age or soccer fandom, but the increase in total cortisol secretion during the match was higher among men than among women and among fans that were younger. Also, increases in cortisol secretion were greater to the degree that people were a stronger fan of soccer. Level of fandom further appeared to account for the sex effect, but not for the age effect. Generally, the testosterone data from this study are in line with the challenge hypothesis, as testosterone levels of watchers increased to prepare their organism to defend or enhance their social status. The cortisol data from this study are in line with social self-preservation theory, as higher cortisol secretion among young and greater soccer fans suggests that especially they perceived that a negative outcome of the match would threaten their own social esteem.  相似文献

Competitive taekwondo composes a high stress situation leading to an increase in the stress hormone cortisol. Little is known about cortisol’s relation to outcome (winning vs. losing) and performance in taekwondo. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate cortisol relation to outcome, performance and whether cortisol can predict performance during a competition. Twenty taekwondo combatants (13 males; Mage = 15) provided four salivary samples (C1: 30 min prior, C2: during, C3: after, and C4: 30 min after competition) during an international competition. Total points made in the two rounds during their first fight were used as a performance indicator. Results show no difference in cortisol between winners and losers, before or after competition. However, a negative correlation between performance and C1 as well as C4 was detected. Unexpected, a positive correlation between cortisol during the competition (C2) and performance was identified. A stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that C2 predicted 25.5% of the performance variance. Even if the sample size is relatively small due to the field experimental setting, some conclusions can be drawn to motivate future research. Potentially, in taekwondo it seems advantageous for performance to have higher levels of stress as indicated by cortisol during a competition, whereas particularly before the competition, sport psychological interventions should be provided to combatants to reduce their psychophysiological stress level.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal rhythms of cortisol, testosterone, and DHEA were examined, as little is known about the relationship between these rhythmicities and pubertal development. Salivary samples were obtained from 60 boys and 60 girls at approximately 07∶45, 08∶00, 08∶30, 12∶00, 16∶50, and 21∶00 h. The participants' ages ranged from 8–14 yrs, and each participant was tested three times at six‐month intervals. The study was conducted at a General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) and at the homes of the participants. All hormones showed diurnal fluctuations. The acrophase (peak time) of cortisol occurred earlier than for testosterone or DHEA and showed a seasonal effect, with the acrophase occurring earlier in spring than in summer. The cortisol acrophase also occurred later in the day for boys than for girls during later puberty. Seasonal effects were found only for cortisol with higher concentrations in the spring and summer. Cortisol concentrations were relatively stable across pubertal maturation, but significantly lower concentrations were observed at pubertal stage 3 compared to the other stages. Morning cortisol levels were also higher in boys at pubertal stage 2. Testosterone concentrations were higher in boys at pubertal stages 3 and 4, and DHEA was lower at pubertal stage 1 than 3 and 4 for both boys and girls. For the total sample, there was a positive correlation between DHEA and testosterone during early puberty (stages 1–3) but not later puberty (stages 4–5). Awakening secretory activity correlated with daytime secretory activity for testosterone and DHEA, but not for cortisol. These data provide novel chronobiological information on cortisol, testosterone, and DHEA as it relates to sexual maturation and encourage further study on both normal and abnormal endocrine rhythms.  相似文献

Human life history is unique among primates, most notably the extraordinary length of infant dependency and the formation of long-term pair-bonds. Men and women are motivated to remain pair-bonded to maintain the distribution of male-provisioned resources to a woman and her offspring, or to protect offspring from infanticide. Men and women can employ several strategies to retain their mate and prevent their partner from defecting from the relationship, including individual mate retention (behaviors performed alone) and coalitional mate retention (behaviors performed by a close ally). The current research investigates whether men and women with children perform more frequent mate retention behaviors than men and women without children. Participants (n = 1003) currently in a heterosexual romantic relationship completed a survey, reporting whether they had genetic children with their current romantic partner and how frequently they performed various mate retention behaviors. The results indicate that men (n = 262) and women (n = 234) who share genetic children with their current partner performed more frequent individual mate retention behaviors and requested more frequent coalitional mate retention behaviors than men (n = 280) and women (n = 227) who do not share genetic children with their current partner. The results are interpreted as they relate to hypotheses concerning the evolution of pair-bonding in humans, and mate retention behaviors more generally. Limitations of the current research are discussed, and profitable avenues for future research in this domain are suggested.  相似文献

The potential for strong competition among small sympatric carnivores results in a need for coexistence strategies whereby competitors partition along spatial, temporal and dietary axes as a means to reduce ecological overlaps. We determined spatial and temporal partitioning patterns of a guild of small African carnivores: the African wildcat Felis silvestris lybica, grey mongoose Galerella pulverulenta, small-spotted genet Genetta genetta, striped polecat Ictonyx striatus, and the yellow mongoose Cynictis penicillata. We quantified the degree of spatial and temporal co-occurrence of the small carnivores using camera trap data over a year-long period. Carnivores separated into two temporal groups: nocturnal species (wildcat, polecat and genet) and diurnal species (mongooses). In addition, carnivores within the same temporal group had strong patterns of reduced spatial co-occurrence. The smaller bodied carnivores showed lower co-occurrence with the larger bodied African wildcat than expected by chance, supporting the idea of dominant competitor avoidance. Thus, small carnivores likely minimise competitive interactions through spatio-temporal habitat partitioning.  相似文献

Competition drives community composition in many ecosystems and can influence the spread of invasive species. Marine fouling communities are excellent study systems for competition because of space limitation and the abundance of invasive species. While many studies have examined individual or site-specific responses to changes in temperature or presence of invasive species, it is difficult to predict ecological impacts without assessing interspecific interactions over a wide geographic range. This study compared interactions between several globally distributed invasive fouling species over a broad geographic range. Weekly examination of photographs of settlement panels in marinas at 18 sites around the world allowed for the quantification of competitive outcomes. In the north Atlantic, experimental panels became covered with fouling organisms exponentially faster at warmer temperatures, while northeast and south Pacific sites did not. An invasive ascidian (Diplosoma listerianum) and bryozoan (Bugula neritina) were strong competitors, but most species displayed a negative response in high competition settings where there was little available space. Two species (Botryllus schlosseri and Botrylloides violaceus) had better competitive outcomes at cooler temperatures, possibly due to fewer strong competitors at these sites. Thus, warmer sites with little open space and multiple strong competitors are likely most resistant to future invasions, while colder sites with more open space and weaker competitors would be more susceptible to invasive species. These results suggest that the establishment and spread of invasive fouling species is likely to be influence by seawater temperature, available space, and the competitive abilities of community members.  相似文献

Plant species generate specific soil communities that feedback on plant growth and competition. These feedbacks have been implicated in plant community composition and dispersion. We used Lactuca sativa and its wild progenitor Lactuca serriola to test the hypotheses that separate Lactuca species generate unique soil communities and that these soil communities differentially influence host, and neighboring, plant growth and competition. We grew each Lactuca in competition with the other, in sterile and non-sterile soils. We then examined the growth of each Lactuca species in sterile, non-sterile, and preconditioned soil. Finally, we used TRFLP techniques to explore whether the two Lactuca species generate significantly different bacterial communities in their rhizosphere soils. L. sativa proved to be the stronger competitor of the two species. However, sterilization increased the competitive effect of L. serriola background competitors. The growth experiment showed a significant effect on plant species, soil treatment, and the interaction of the two. Preconditioning soil caused reduced growth in both Lactuca species. Only L. serriola showed significantly increased growth in sterile soils. Our TRFLP analysis showed that the L. sativa soil community was significantly less diverse and that soil preconditioning had the largest impact on the community composition. These results show that Lactuca serriola’s rhizosphere communities generate a stronger negative feedback for plant growth than do the communities associated with L. sativa. Our study suggests that selection for plants that are able to grow in dense monoculture may have released Lactuca from species-specific negative soil feedbacks. This has important implications for both agriculture and the evolution of invasive plant species.  相似文献

To understand the role of native ladybird biodiversity in habitat susceptibility on the establishment and spread of Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), we characterized and compared European communities where they had established and where they had not established. The local communities of ladybirds were characterized in terms of biodiversity, the average difference in body mass between H. axyridis and other coccinellid species and the rarefied total body mass of all individuals (as a surrogate for aphid abundance and availability). The lack of success of H. axyridis in the Azores, as well as its low success in Southern Europe, can be explained by a combination of resource availability and intraguild competition. We suggest the success of this invasive alien species to establish in a habitat depends first on resource availability and second when most direct competitors for limited resources are absent or are uncommon.  相似文献

This study addressed whether competition under different light environments was reflected by changes in leaf absorbed light energy partitioning, photosynthetic efficiency, relative growth rate and biomass allocation in invasive and native competitors. Additionally, a potential allelopathic effect of mulching with invasive Prunus serotina leaves on native Quercus petraea growth and photosynthesis was tested. The effect of light environment on leaf absorbed light energy partitioning and photosynthetic characteristics was more pronounced than the effects of interspecific competition and allelopathy. The quantum yield of PSII of invasive P. serotina increased in the presence of a competitor, indicating a higher plasticity in energy partitioning for the invasive over the native Q. petraea, giving it a competitive advantage. The most striking difference between the two study species was the higher crown-level net CO2 assimilation rates (Acrown) of P. serotina compared with Q. petraea. At the juvenile life stage, higher relative growth rate and higher biomass allocation to foliage allowed P. serotina to absorb and use light energy for photosynthesis more efficiently than Q. petraea. Species-specific strategies of growth, biomass allocation, light energy partitioning and photosynthetic efficiency varied with the light environment and gave an advantage to the invader over its native competitor in competition for light. However, higher biomass allocation to roots in Q. petraea allows for greater belowground competition for water and nutrients as compared to P. serotina. This niche differentiation may compensate for the lower aboveground competitiveness of the native species and explain its ability to co-occur with the invasive competitor in natural forest settings.  相似文献

Serum concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione, testosterone, 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone and cortisol were measured in 10 infants (age 5-22 months) before, during and after 6-weeks of ACTH therapy for infantile spasms. During therapy, their mean DHEA concentrations increased 2.3-fold, androstenedione 12.3-fold, testosterone 2.7-fold, 5 alpha-dihydrotesterone 2.5-fold and cortisol 2.9-fold compared to pre-therapy values. Serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S) concentrations were also increased during ACTH therapy above the normal prepubertal range. Three days after the cessation of ACTH treatment, all androgens had returned to the pre-therapy level. We conclude: At least in pharmacologic doses ACTH alone stimulates adrenal androgen secretion in infants, excluding the necessity of a separate adrenal androgen stimulating hormone.  相似文献

Invasive plant species can modify soils in a way that benefits their fitness more than the fitness of native species. However, it is unclear how competition among plant species alters the strength and direction of plant–soil feedbacks. We tested how community context altered plant–soil feedback between the non-native invasive forb Lespedeza cuneata and nine co-occurring native prairie species. In a series of greenhouse experiments, we grew plants individually and in communities with soils that differed in soil origin (invaded or uninvaded by L. cuneata) and in soils that were live vs. sterilized. In the absence of competition, L. cuneata produced over 60% more biomass in invaded than uninvaded soils, while native species performance was unaffected. The absence of a soil origin effect in sterile soil suggests that the positive plant–soil feedback was caused by differences in the soil biota. However, in the presence of competition, the positive effect of soil origin on L. cuneata growth disappeared. These results suggest that L. cuneata may benefit from positive plant–soil feedback when establishing populations in disturbed landscapes with few interspecific competitors, but does not support the hypothesis that plant–soil feedbacks influence competitive outcomes between L. cuneata and native plant species. These results highlight the importance of considering whether competition influences the outcome of interactions between plants and soils.  相似文献

Excessive hormone secretion during hypercorticism and acromegaly results in significant disturbances in bone remodeling, decrease in bone quality, and bone fractures following small traumas. However, the mechanisms of the development of such changes are not clear. In the present study, we examined specimens of bone tissue from patients with endogenous hypercorticism (increased cortisol secretion) and acromegaly (increased growth hormone secretion) obtained during transnasal adenomectomy. Our main purpose was to analyze the expression of genes responsible for osteogenesis in the bone tissue specimens from patients with hypercorticism and acromegaly, targeting an assessment of pathogenetic aspects associated with bone complications. The study included 19 specimens of bone tissue from patients with pituitary tumors (samples with acromegaly, Cushing disease, and inactive pituitary adenomas; the latter served as a control group). We revealed 14 genes (ACP5, ALPL, BGLAP, BMP7, CD40, COL1A1, COL1A2, IGF1, IGFBP2, IL6, LEP, LTA, MMP2, WNT10B) which appeared to be the most important and require further detailed study. The present study confirmed the key role of the Wnt-signaling pathway in the osteogenic process. In addition, we present new data on molecular mechanisms of development of skeletal complications in the case of cortisol and growth hormone oversecretion in humans.  相似文献
