The effects of the foliar application of phytocidal concentrationsof 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) on change in totaldry weight, and in ‘available carbohydrate’ (starch,‘total’ and ‘reducing’ sugars), totalnitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium of ‘tops’and roots of tomato plants have been followed over a periodof 14 days following spraying. There were two main treatments—‘nutrient’(nutrient supply to roots continued after spraying) and ‘water’(distilled water only supplied to roots after spraying) and‘water’ (distilled water only supplied to rootsafter spraying)—the sub-treatments consisting of ‘MCPA’versus ‘no-MCPA’ for each of the main treatments.Twelve different times of sampling were used. In analysing the present data, the quantity ‘residualdry weight’ (total dry weight less ‘available carbohydrate’),which was originally introduced by Mason and Maskell as a basisof reference for analyses of plant organs in short-period experimentsnot involving appreciable growth, has been used as an estimateof the permanent structure of plant growth. This new use ofthe ‘residual dry weight’ basis has brought outimportant features which were obscured when the data were leftin their primary form (as percentages of total dry weight oramounts per plant). Growth, as measured by increase in ‘residual dry weight’,was greatly inhibited by 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acidshortly after spraying, in both the presence and the absenceof nutrient. In the presence of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, netassimilation rate (estimated as rate of increase in total dryweight per gram ‘residual dry weight’ of the ‘tops’)was greatly diminished while uptake of total nitrogen and ofP2O5 (estimated as increase in total nitrogen or of P2O5 ofthe whole plant per day per 1 g. ‘residual dry weight’of the roots) appeared to undergo a similar but much smallerdiminution. It seemed probable, however, that in the presenceof MCPA a larger proportion of the carbohydrate actually formedwas utilized for synthesis of aminoacids and protein. In the plant as a whole there was no evidence of actual depletionof ‘available carbohydrate’ as a result of MCPAtreatment, this fraction showing a steady increase in all treatmentsthroughout the experiment. The rate of increase was, however,much reduced by MCPA treatment. The ‘tops’ presentedmuch the same picture as the whole plant, but for the rootsthe situation was quite different. While the roots of the ‘no-MCPA’plants and also of the ‘MCPA-water’ plants showeda steady increase in available carbohydrate, those of the ‘MCPA-nutrient’plants rose only very slightly (from the initial value of 8mg. per plant to about 10 mg.) during the first 2 days, andthen in the next 2 days declined to a value (about 6 mg.) belowthe initial and remained at this low level for the rest of theexperiment. It is suggested that the phytocidal effect of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyaceticacid in the presence of nutrient may be due to depletion ofthe ‘available carbohydrate’ supplies in the roots,which is shown to be brought about, in part, by reduced transportfrom the tops, and partly by the relatively greater utilizationof the carbohydrate present. These results offer an explanationfor the facts that plants showing vigorous growth are more easilykilled by MCPA and that perennial plants, particularly thosewith storage tissues in their roots, are more resistant. Further,they suggest the useful practical application that MCPA treatmentshould be given when the carbohydrate reserves of the rootsare at a minimum. For perennial plants, conditions might beexpected to be optimal for the application of MCPA in late spring,at a time when the first ‘flush’ of growth is slowingdown and before any appreciable new reserves of carbohydratehave been accumulated. It was also shown that 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid preventedthe net synthesis of starch, but still permitted an appreciablenet formation of sucrose. 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid appeared to have no effecton the uptake of potassium, calcium, or of magnesium. The lackof effect on potassium is contrasted with the previous observationby Rhodes, Templeman, and Thruston (1950) that sub-lethal concentrationsof MCPA, applied over a relatively long period to the rootsof tomato plants, specifically depressed the uptake of potassium.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to investigate stomatal responsesin wheat to four ‘closing treatments’, viz. highcarbon dioxide concentration, darkness, dry air and nil, eachgiven under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Thus theeffect of lack of oxygen on the closing (or opening) tendencywas estimated. Changes in calculated from resistance porometer readings were used as data and reasonsare given for thinking this is the best available measure forinvestigating stomatal dynamics in wheat. Williams's hypothesisdemands that lack of oxygen should cause stomatal opening orprevent closure; the present experiment shows that anaerobicconditions significantly increase the closing tendency when‘closing treatments’ are first applied. There isalso some suggestion that oxygen-lack itself tends to causeclosure in the absence of any other ‘closing treatment’.Williams's hypothesis in its original form is thus disproved(for wheat) but the present results would be consistent withan ‘active’ uptake of water by the guard cells contributingto stomatal opening. A nearly significant interaction betweencarbon dioxide and oxygen suggests that under anaerobic conditionsa ‘closing substance’ may perhaps be formed, forexample, by the union of some intermediate in glycolysis withcarbon dioxide.  相似文献

The time at which a bud began to expand was related to its positionnot only on an individual shoot but also within the crown. Thedistribution of buds and branches on the shoot was uneven; theshoot tip, where they were densely clustered, was termed the‘whorl; and the remainder of the shoot, where they werewidely spaced, the ‘interwhorl’ stem. In spring,the terminal bud started expanding before the ‘whorl’buds which preceded the ‘interwhorl’ stem buds;completion of the flush of growth, determined by the end ofleaf expansion, occurred in the reverse order, ‘interwhorl’> ‘whorl’ > terminal. Similarly bud expansionstarted at the top of the crown and progressed downwards, andthe first shoots to complete their flush were at the bottomof the crown. Approximately 60% of the buds on each shoot beganexpanding in spring but only about half of these formed branches.Bud abscission began in May and by Sep. 45% of buds originallypresent had abscised. Most of-the buds that did not abscisewere the small buds at the base of the shoot that were not originallyassociated with a leaf. Approximately 42% of ‘whorl’buds and 28% of MnterwhorP stem buds formed branches. ‘Whorl’branches were approx. 60% longer that ‘interwhorl’stem branches; buds on the lower surface of the shoot producedlonger branches than those on the upper surface. Histochemical investigations on the Prosopis juliflora seedcoat indicate the occurrence of a hydrophobic ‘strip’as the primary water barrier. Its position and the structureand histochemistry of the palisade cells of the seed coat differaccording to their location on the seed. These differences maybe responsible for differences in the water permeability ofvarious parts of the seed coat. In particular, parts of theseed coat in which the hydrophobic ‘strip’ is locatedmore superficially tend to be more water impermeable than partslike the chalaza, in which the ‘strip’ is more deeplylocated within the palisade cells. Higher level relationships within the Gastropoda are difficultto determine, in part due to the paucity of identified synapomorphiccharacters. Larval shell hydrophobicity may be a useful additionalcharacter for gastropod family systematics. A survey of 57 speciesindicates that larval shell hydrophobicity is common or ubiquitousin pyramidellids, opistho-branchs, and marine pulmonates butis unknown in patellogastropods, vetigastropods, and caenogas-tropods.The taxonomic distribution of hydrophobic larval shells is consistentwith the hypothesis that it is a heterobranch synapomorphy.Unfortunately the condition in key ‘lower’ heterobranchssuch as architectonicids and valvatoids is unknown. Diurnal laminar reorientation was followed in solar-trackingleaves of Lavatera cretica L. under simulated conditions. Asimulated ‘sun’ was moved over the lamina in a 180?arc in the vertical plane of the mid-vein, at an angular velocityof 15? h–1 in a regime of 12-h photoperiods. In one groupof plants the petioles of the experimental leaves were arrangedto face ‘sunrise’, while in the other they werearranged to face ‘sunset’. At ‘sunrise’,the laminae in both groups, which were inclined towards theanticipated direction of ‘sunrise’, changed theirelevation towards the rising ‘sun’, resulting inprogressive reduction in the angle of incidence (AI) of lighton the laminar surface (AI= differential between laminar and‘solar’ elevation). As a result, laminar and ‘solar’elevation converged, and laminar reorientation gradually ceased,until the ‘solar’ elevation had passed the normalto the laminar surface (AI=0?). laminar reorientation was thenresumed, but its direction was reversed to follow the directionof ‘solar’ reorientation. During most of the remaining‘day’, laminar elevation (LE) trailed that of the‘sun’ by an average of 11?-14?. Laminar reorientationthen anticipated ‘sunset’ by starting to slow down60 to 90min in advance. During the 12-h dark period, the laminareoriented towards the anticipated direction of the subsequent‘sunrise’. The time-course of nocturnal reorientationwas qualitatively different in the two groups of experimentalplants. The time-course of diurnal phototropism under naturaland simulated conditions is analysed and compared and differencesand similarities between them are discussed. The Gulf of California, Mexico, is often viewed as an insularenvironment for marine faunas. Moreover, its geographical history,geomorphology, latitudinal orientation and a convergence ofthree different water masses at the mouth of the Gulf make itan ideal setting for isolation, and probably contribute to theexpectations of high endemism. However, rigorous analyses ofbiogeographic patterns are an essential prerequisite to an understandingof evolutionary processes in the Gulf and other biogeographicrealms. A new ‘sliding window’ technique is presentedhere to test whether the Gulf of California is an isolated habitat.Endemism in the Gulf of California is evaluated by comparingthe number of endemic gastropods for the Gulf of Californiawith the number of endemic gastropods found in neighbouringcoastlines of the same coastal length by using ‘slidingwindow’ analysis. Range sizes and diversity within theGulf are compared with regions outside of the Gulf using variationsof ‘sliding window’ analysis. In addition, examiningrange endpoints and the percentage of ranges that lie acrossthe mouth of the Gulf of California tests the hypothesis thatthe mouth acts as a barrier to migration into and out of theGulf. The results of these analyses do not support the hypothesisthat the nearshore Gulf of California faunas are structuredby this supposed isolated body of water. The hydraulic system in leaves was investigated in some detailand analysed in terms of an electrical transmission line analogy.The equivalent ‘circuit elements’ in the leaf wereidentified and their values calculated. The values of the ‘capacitative’and ‘inductive’ terms were calculated for variousleaf water potentials and for various changes in potential.They both exhibited considerable non-linearity. The calculatedvalues were used to derive values for the ‘impedance’of the pathways through the leaf xylem, and through the mesophyllcell walls, and to investigate the characteristics of thesetwo pathways when oscillations, or fluctuations, in leaf waterstatus were occurring.  相似文献

The generation of binding modes between two molecules, alsoknown as molecular docking, is a key problem in rational drugdesign and biomolecular recognition. Docking a ligand, e.g.,a drug molecule or a protein molecule, to a protein receptor,involves recognition of molecular surfaces as molecules interactat their surface. Recent studies report that the activity ofmany molecules induces conformational transitions by ‘hinge-bending’,which involves movements of relatively rigid parts with respectto each other. In ligand–receptor binding, relative rotationalmovements of molecu–lar substructures about their commonhinges have been observed. For automatically predicting flexiblemolecular interactions, we adapt a new technique developed inComputer Vision and Robotics for the efficient recognition ofpartially occluded articulated objects. These type of objectsconsist of rigid parts which are connected by rotary joints(hinges). Our approach is based on an extension and generalizationof the Geometric Hashing and Generalized Hough Transform paradigmfor rigid object recognition. Unlike other techniques whichmatch each part individually, our approach exploits forcefullyand efficiently enough the fact that the different rigid partsdo belong to the same flexible molecule. We show experimentalresults obtained by an implementation of the algorithm for rigidand flexible docking. While the ‘correct’, crystal–boundcomplex is obtained with a small RMSD, additional, predictive‘high scoring’ binding modes are generated as well.The diverse applications and implications of this general, powerfultool are discussed  相似文献

A study was carried out on the growth of third- and fourth-yearseedlings of four provenances of Pinus contorta, two of whichwere from high elevations and two from coastal sites. Markeddifferences in height growth were observed, the two coastalprovenances showing significantly greater growth than the twomontane ones. These growth differences were due to differencesin the numbers of needle and stem ‘internode’ primordialaid down in the resting buds in the preceding year, and notto differences in ‘internode’ length in the annualextension shoots. The differences in height growth were paralleledby differences in dry weight. A greater relative height growthrate was shown by one coastal provenance and probably also bythe second, than by the montane provenances. The levels of reservematerials were similar in all provenances. These results arediscussed and it is concluded that the growth of montane provenancesmay be ‘sink limited’ rather than ‘sourcelimited’ when they are grown at lower altitudes.  相似文献

This paper reports further studies on the characteristics ofthe storage protein fraction (hordein) of barley. Hordein consistsof two groups of polypeptides (termed ‘B’ and ‘C’)coded by two separate but linked loci. Whereas the ‘C’polypeptides are readily soluble and extracted in 60% (v/v)ethanol at room temperature, the ‘B’ group is moresoluble in, and therefore more efficiently extracted by, 50%(v/v) propan-1-ol or 45% (v/v) propan-2-ol at elevated temperaturesand in the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol. However, the mostefficient conditions for hordein extraction (50% propan-1-ol+ 2% (v/v) 2-mercaptoethanol at 60 °C) also extract somecontaminating non-hordein polypeptides resulting in an apparentlyincreased lysine content of the hordein fraction. Amino acid analysis of the purified ‘B’ and ‘C’hordein groups shows that, whereas ‘C’ hordein containsmore glutamate + glutamine, proline, and phenylalanine than‘B’ hordein, it contains only traces of lysine andsulphur amino acids in contrast to ‘B’ hordein whichcontains 0·5% lysine 0·6% methionine, and 2·5%cysteine. Equilibrium sedimentation analyses carried out on the purified‘B’ and ‘C’ groups indicates that thepreparations were reasonably monodisperse with molecular weightsof approximately 32 000 and 52 000 respectively. Background and Aims Summer dormancy in perennial grasseshas been studied inadequately, despite its potential to enhanceplant survival and persistence in Mediterranean areas. The aimof the present work was to characterize summer dormancy anddehydration tolerance in two cultivars of Dactylis glomerata(dormant ‘Kasbah’, non-dormant ‘Oasis’)and their hybrid using physiological indicators associated withthese traits. • Methods Dehydration tolerance was assessed in a glasshouseexperiment, while seasonal metabolic changes which produce putativeprotectants for drought, such as carbohydrates and dehydrinsthat might be associated with summer dormancy, were analysedin the field. • Key Results The genotypes differed in their ability tosurvive increasing soil water deficit: lethal soil water potential(s) was –3·4 MPa for ‘Kasbah’ (althoughnon-dormant), –1·3 MPa for ‘Oasis’,and –1·6 MPa for their hybrid. In contrast, lethalwater content of apices was similar for all genotypes (approx.0·45 g H2O g d. wt–1), and hence the greater survivalof ‘Kasbah’ can be ascribed to better drought avoidancerather than dehydration tolerance. In autumn-sown plants, ‘Kasbah’had greatest dormancy, the hybrid was intermediate and ‘Oasis’had none. The more dormant the genotype, the lower the metabolicactivity during summer, and the earlier the activity declinedin spring. Decreased monosaccharide content was an early indicatorof dormancy induction. Accumulation of dehydrins did not correlatewith stress tolerance, but dehydrin content was a function ofthe water status of the tissues, irrespective of the soil moisture.A protein of approx. 55 kDa occurred in leaf bases of the mostdormant cultivar even in winter. • Conclusions Drought avoidance and summer dormancy arecorrelated but can be independently expressed. These traitsare heritable, allowing selection in breeding programmes.  相似文献

Dry legumes of Sesbania punicea (Cav.) Benth. contain impermeableseeds which are either beige-greenish or reddish. When keptin water for over one year they do not swell. Quick imbibitionwas induced by a deep cut, abrasion with coarse abrasive paper,immersion in concentrated sulphuric acid, in boiling water andin boiling KOH solutions. Neither lipid solvents (acetone, chloroform,cyclohexane, diethyl ether, ethanol, xylene), nor, at room temperature,KOH solutions up to 50% per cent, permeabilized the seeds. Astrong barrier to water entry appeared to be located in thepalisade layer which showed ‘light points’ in places,and which seemed to be transversal thickenings. In the testa,‘ callose’, which may play a role in the impermeabilityof the Sesbania punicea seed, was detected. This paper is a theoretical discussion of the concept of suctionpotential or suction pressure as applied to plant cells, especiallywith reference to the possible occurrence of ‘active’water-secreting mechanisms. Following an attempt to define whatis meant by suction potential there is a discussion of the distinctionbetween ‘active’ and ‘passive’ agenciesin relation to water movement and a tabulation of such agencies. Some of the less commonly considered mechanisms are discussedin some detail, and an attempt is made to evaluate how effectivethey might be in producing increments of turgor pressure. Theconclusion is reached that if active mechanisms are operativein cell-water relations, then suction potential cannot adequatelybe denned in the ordinary way—in fact the ‘water-absorbingeffort’ of a cell cannot be completely specified in termsof pressure alone. There are appendixes on the possible role of frictional or contactelectrification in cell physiology; on the increase of permeabilityof the plasma membrane to ions and water caused by electricalforces; and on the energy requirement of active water-secretingmechanisms.  相似文献

Horseradish roots reach a stage of ‘ripeness to regenerate’at the age of 1–2 months, when secondary thickening hasbegun, a phellogen has formed, and the primary cortex has beenshed; provided that they are then detached from the parent plant. 2. New primordia arise (as is already known) only in associationwith the scars of lateral roots; but they are produced, notas previously believed from a callus, but individually as organizedmeristems whose cells are derived only from the phellogen ofthe main root. 3. Past experience has shown that the Poisson series is often inadequateas a model for describing plant populations. Various alternativetwo-parameter models have been suggested in place of the Poissonseries, but they all depend on assumptions which may or maynot hold. In this paper a different approach is put forwardin that attention is concentrated on the mean number of plantsper quadrat and an index of ‘clumping’ or ‘contagiousness’.Examples are given as to the use of these concepts to test fordifferences between the distribution of a plant in two localitiesor between two plants in the same locality.  相似文献

‘Blueing’ in young and senescing petals was comparedin the red rose cv. Baccara. The ‘blueing’ of senescingflowers is accompanied by a bathochromic shift in the lightreflectance curve, a rise in the pH value and a decrease inthe malic acid concentration of the petal tissue. These factorsindicate that a complex with a co-pigment is produced. Similarchanges were not found in the ‘blueing’ of youngflowers, where a decrease was found in pigment concentrationper unit weight as well as per unit area of petal. A similar‘blueing’ was achieved by diluting a solution ofcrystalline cyanin. The phenomenon of ‘blueing’by dilution is discussed in the light of Bougeur's law.  相似文献

Recent molecular systematic and developmental genetic findingshave drawn attention to plant morphology as a discipline dealingwith the phenotypic appearance of plant forms. However, sincedifferent terms and conceptual frameworks have evolved overa period of more than 200 years, it is reasonable to surveythe history of plant morphology; this is the first of two paperswith this aim. The present paper deals with the historic conceptsof Troll, Zimmermann and Arber, which are based on Goethe'smorphology. Included are contrasting views of ‘unity anddiversity’, ‘position and process’, and ‘morphologyand phylogeny’, which, in part, are basic views of currentplant morphology, phylogenetic systematics and developmentalgenetics. Wilhelm Troll established the ‘type concept’and the ‘principle of variable proportions’. Hehas provided the most comprehensive overview of the positionalrelations of plant forms. Agnes Arber started from the universaldynamics of life and attempted to describe all structures asprocesses. She paid attention to ‘repetitive branching’,‘differential growth’, and ‘parallelism’.As a result she has recently been rediscovered by developmentalbotanists. Walter Zimmermann rejected any metaphysical influenceon plant form and instead called for objective procedures. Hewas mainly interested in phylogenetic ‘character transformation’and the ‘reconstruction of genealogical lines’.Guided by the example of flower-like inflorescences, a futurepaper will deal with functional and developmental constraintsinfluencing plant forms. Recent morphological concepts (‘trialectical’,‘continuum’/‘fuzzy’, ‘processmorphology’) will be discussed and related to currentmorphological and developmental genetic research.
