Stimulus evoked oscillatory synchronization of neural assemblies has been most clearly documented in the olfactory and visual systems. Recent results with the olfactory system of locusts show that information about odour identity is contained in spatial and temporal aspects of an oscillatory population response. This suggests that brain oscillations may reflect a common reference for messages encoded in time. Although stimulus-evoked oscillatory phenomena are reliable, their roles in perception, memory and pattern recognition remain to be demonstrated. Using honey bees, we demonstrated that odour encoding involves, as in locusts, the oscillatory synchronization of assemblies of neurons, and that this synchronization is, here also, selectively abolished by the GABA receptor antagonist picrotoxin. In collaboration with Dr Brian Smith's laboratory, we showed, using a behavioural learning paradigm, that picrotoxin-induced desynchronization impairs the discrimination of molecularly similar odourants, but not that of dissimilar odours. It appears, therefore, that oscillatory synchronization of neuronal assemblies is relevant, and essential for fine odour discrimination. Finally, experiments with locust mushroom body neurons, two synapses downstream from the antennal lobe, indicate that their responses to odours become less specific when antennal lobe neurons are desynchronized by picrotoxin injection. These results suggest that oscillatory synchronization and the kind of temporal encoding it affords provide an additional dimension by which the brain can segment spatially overlapping stimulus representations.  相似文献

Stimulation with odours has been shown to elicit characteristic patterns of activated glomeruli in the antennal lobe (AL) of honeybees. In this study we show that these patterns are dynamic in a time window of 2-3 s after stimulus onset. We measured changes in the averaged membrane potential of all cells in the glomerular neuropil by optical imaging of the voltage-sensitive dye RH795 using a slow scan CCD camera (3 frames/s). The four substances 1-hexanol, hexanal, citral and clove-oil as well as the binary mixtures hexanol+hexanal and hexanol+citral were used as stimuli (2 s stimulus duration). We found that: (1) every odour elicited an odour-specific activity pattern, and conversely every glomerulus had a characteristic odour response profile; (2) some glomeruli had a tonic, some a phasic-tonic, and some a slow phasic response pattern; (3) the difference between the glomerular response patterns increased within 2 s of stimulus presentation, which suggests that odour representations became more characteristic over stimulus time; and (4) the responses to odorant mixtures were complex and glomerulus-dependent: some responses correspond to the sum of the compounds' responses, some to the response of one of the components.  相似文献

This review summarizes recent investigations of temporal processing. We focus on motor and perceptual tasks in which crucial events span hundreds of milliseconds. One key question concerns whether the representation of temporal information is dependent on a specialized system, distributed across a network of neural regions, or computed in a local task-dependent manner. Consistent with the specialized system framework, the cerebellum is associated with various tasks that require precise timing. Computational models of timing mechanisms within the cerebellar cortex are beginning to motivate physiological studies. Emphasis has also been placed on the basal ganglia as a specialized timing system, particularly for longer intervals. We outline an alternative hypothesis in which this structure is associated with decision processes.  相似文献

Glomeruli within the antennal lobe (AL) of moths are convergence sites for a large number of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). The ORNs target single glomeruli. In the male-specific cluster of glomeruli, the macroglomerular complex (MGC), the input is chemotypic in that each glomerulus of the MGC receives information about a specific component of the conspecific female sex pheromone. Little is known about how neurons that detect other odorants arborize in and amongst glomeruli. The present study focuses on how sex pheromones and biologically relevant semiochemicals are represented in the ALs of both sexes of the moth Spodoptera littoralis. To assess this, we optically measured odour-evoked changes of calcium concentration in the ALs. Foci of calcium increase corresponded in size and shape with anatomical glomeruli. More than one glomerulus was normally activated by a specific non-pheromonal odorant and the same glomerulus was activated by several odorants. All odorants and pheromone components tested evoked unique patterns of glomerular activity that were highly reproducible at repeated stimulations within an individual. Odour-evoked patterns were similar between individuals for a given odorant, implicating a spatial olfactory code. In addition, we demonstrated that activity patterns evoked by host-plant related volatiles are similar between males and females.  相似文献

Perception of odours can provoke explicit reactions such as judgements of intensity or pleasantness, and implicit output such as skin conductance or heart rate variations. The main purpose of the present experiment was to ascertain: (i) the correlation between odour ratings (intensity, arousal, pleasantness and familiarity) and activation of the autonomic nervous system, and (ii) the inter-correlation between self-report ratings on intensity, arousal, pleasantness and familiarity dimensions in odour perception. Twelve healthy volunteers were tested in two separate sessions. Firstly, subjects were instructed to smell six odorants (isovaleric acid, thiophenol, pyridine, L-menthol, isoamyl acetate, and 1-8 cineole), while skin conductance and heart rate variations were being measured. During this phase, participants were not asked to give any judgement about the odorants. Secondly, subjects were instructed to rate the odorants on dimensions of intensity, pleasantness, arousal and familiarity (self-report ratings), by giving a mark between 1 (not at all intense, arousing, pleasant or familiar) and 9 (extremely intense, arousing, pleasant or familiar). Results indicated: (i) a pleasantness factor correlated with heart rate variations, (ii) an arousal factor correlated with skin conductance variations, and (iii) a strong correlation between the arousal and intensity dimensions. In conclusion, given that these correlations are also found in other studies using visual and auditory stimuli, these findings provide preliminary information suggesting that autonomic variations in response to olfactory stimuli are probably not modality specific, and may be organized along two main dimensions of pleasantness and arousal, at least for the parameters considered (i.e. heart rate and skin conductance).  相似文献

Summary Detailed histochemical studies on the distribution of various oxidative and dephosphorylating groups of enzymes have been made in the olfactory glomeruli of the squirrel monkey. The olfactory glomeruli showed strongly positive activity for succinic dehydrogenase, lactic dehydrogenase, monoamine oxidase, alkaline phosphatase, adenosinetriphosphatase and simple esterase. They showed moderately positive activity for cytochrome oxidase, specific cholinesterase, 5'nucleotidase; mildly positive activity for acid phosphatase; and negligible activity for nonspecific cholinesterase and glucose-6-phosphatase. The glomeruli did not show the presence of any thiamine pyrophosphatase-positive Golgi apparatus. The blood vessels surrounding the glomeruli were strongly positive for the nonspecific cholinesterase test. The significance of these results are discussed briefly.  相似文献

Sacred values, such as those associated with religious or ethnic identity, underlie many important individual and group decisions in life, and individuals typically resist attempts to trade off their sacred values in exchange for material benefits. Deontological theory suggests that sacred values are processed based on rights and wrongs irrespective of outcomes, while utilitarian theory suggests that they are processed based on costs and benefits of potential outcomes, but which mode of processing an individual naturally uses is unknown. The study of decisions over sacred values is difficult because outcomes cannot typically be realized in a laboratory, and hence little is known about the neural representation and processing of sacred values. We used an experimental paradigm that used integrity as a proxy for sacredness and which paid real money to induce individuals to sell their personal values. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we found that values that people refused to sell (sacred values) were associated with increased activity in the left temporoparietal junction and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, regions previously associated with semantic rule retrieval. This suggests that sacred values affect behaviour through the retrieval and processing of deontic rules and not through a utilitarian evaluation of costs and benefits.  相似文献

SUMMARY: An algorithm and software are described that provide a fast method to produce a novel, function-oriented visualization of the results of a sequence database search. Text mining of sequence annotations allows position specific plots of potential functional similarity to be compared in a simple compact representation. A series of 47 patients studied with stereotactically implanted depth electrodes is analyzed. Indications and grouping of the patients fall into three main categories: (a) the bitemporal series (35 patients) where there is ambiguity as to the lateralization of the focus; (b) the unilateral series (6 patients) where the problem is one of localization within one hemisphere, and (c) the generalized series where one tries to determine the primary focus in secondary generalized seizures (6 patients). The best indication appears to be the bitemporal cases, in which a large number of attacks can be recorded by computer. Most of them tend to have a well-lateralized onset in one of the temporal lobes; 32 of the 35 implanted patients were operated upon (91.4%). The results on the seizure tendency in these patients is comparable, if not superior, to those obtained in the so-called unilateral cases. Correlation studies indicate that interictal activity is a good indicator of the predominance of seizures.  相似文献

A central task of perception can be defined as one of computing hierarchies of invariants. One way of representing such invariants in intermediate levels of abstraction in this hierarchy is to use discrete units. These have been termed value units. A problem with such an encoding is that there has not been a good way to represent accurate numerical quantities using these units. This paper remedies the deficiency by describing a scheme that interpolates values between units representing fixed numerical quantities. The role of the hippocampal formation in spatial cognition is thought to be supported by distinct classes of neurons whose firing is tuned to an organism''s position and orientation in space. In this article, we review recent research focused on how and when this neural representation of space emerges during development: each class of spatially tuned neurons appears at a different age, and matures at a different rate, but all the main spatial responses tested so far are present by three weeks of age in the rat. We also summarize the development of spatial behaviour in the rat, describing how active exploration of space emerges during the third week of life, the first evidence of learning in formal tests of hippocampus-dependent spatial cognition is observed in the fourth week, whereas fully adult-like spatial cognitive abilities require another few weeks to be achieved. We argue that the development of spatially tuned neurons needs to be considered within the context of the development of spatial behaviour in order to achieve an integrated understanding of the emergence of hippocampal function and spatial cognition.  相似文献

The nature of complementary binding sites on the surfaces of hamster gametes has been analysed using mono- and oligosaccharides, glycoproteins and glycosidases in an in vitro system. The binding of capacitated spermatozoa to the zona pellucida was inhibited by several mono- and oligosaccharides related to fucose, galactose, and acetylated amino sugars, but not by unrelated sugars. Several glycoproteins with prosthetic carbohydrate groups rich in or terminated by galactose or N-acetylglucosamine residues were also potent inhibitors of fertilization. Of all the glucoproteins tested, two plasma glycoproteins, α1-acid glycoproteins (orosomucoid) and fetuin were most effective. In their native form they were non-inhibitory but their desialylated (galactoseterminated) forms completely prevented the sperm-zona binding. Agalacto-orosomucoid with N-acetylglucosamine terminals also inhibited fertilization. The treatment of capacitated spermatozoa with α- -fucosidase, α- -galactosidase and β-N-acetylhexosaminidase, but not with other glycosidases, trypsin and arylsulphatase, resulted in the complete inhibition of fertilization. Inhibitory saccharides and glycosidases did not interfere with sperm motility and had no effect on sperm-oolemma fusion. The pretreatment of cumulus-free oocytes with these agents did not inhibit sperm zona pellucida binding either. These results provide evidence that sperm-zona pellucida binding is mediated by ligands on the sperm surface containing fucose, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylgalactosamine residues.  相似文献
