The impact of parasitism on population dynamics and community structure of marine animals is an area of growing interest in marine ecology. The effect of a microphallid trematode, Maritrema novaezelandensis on the survival of its amphipod host, Paracalliope novizealandiae, was investigated by a laboratory study combined with data from field collections. In the laboratory, the effect of infection level on host mortality was investigated. Four groups of individuals were exposed to 0 (control), 5 (low), 25 (moderate) and 125 (high) cercariae, respectively, and their survival was monitored during a 10-day period. The distribution and migration of unencysted cercariae within the host were examined during dissections 6 and 48 h post infection. Parasite-induced mortality under field conditions was investigated by quantifying the relationship between parasite load and host body size. In the laboratory experiment, a highly significant decrease in host survival was observed for amphipods in the moderate and high infection groups relative to that of control amphipods. Parasite-induced mortality was most pronounced in the first two days post infection suggesting that the increased mortality is due to penetration of host cuticula and migration of cercariae within the host. Field data showed a monotonic increase in the mean parasite load with the body size of the amphipods, indicating that M. novaezelandensis does not severely affect P. novizealandiae-populations under normal field conditions. However, a decrease in the variance-to-mean ratio for the largest size-classes indicates that heavily infected individuals are removed from the population as predicted by the experimental infections. The results from the laboratory study in conjunction with our knowledge of the transmission strategy of the parasite emphasize the potential effect of M. novaezelandensis on its amphipod host population during episodes of high temperature causing the rapid and massive release of cercariae from snail intermediate hosts.  相似文献

American horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) exhibit clear circadian rhythms of visual sensitivity in the laboratory and in the field they exhibit seasonal patterns of mating behavior that are closely associated with the tides. Recent reports suggest that Limulus locomotor activity may be controlled by endogenous circadian and/or circatidal clocks and that light:dark (LD) cycles may affect the rhythmic output of both of these clocks. In this study, we examined locomotor behavior in the laboratory to determine the extent of this endogenous activity and to examine the influence of LD cycles on these rhythms. Thirty-three L. polyphemus were captured during the breeding season and their activity was monitored with activity boxes and “running wheels” in seawater kept at constant temperature and salinity. Activity patterns were analyzed using visual inspection of actograms and Chi-square and Lomb-Scargle periodograms. Overall, 36% of the animals was significantly more active during L, while only 12% was more active during D (52% showed no preference). Circatidal rhythms were observed in LD in 67% of the horseshoe crabs. Surprisingly, LD cycles appeared to synchronize these rhythms at times. In DD, the majority of animals tested (63%) exhibited circatidal rhythms that persisted for at least seven days. Overall, the results demonstrate that an endogenously controlled tidal rhythm of locomotion operates during, and significantly after, the breeding season in this species. In addition, the present results are consistent with the presence of circalunidian oscillators controlling these rhythms.  相似文献

The sex pheromone system of Antheraea polyphemus was characterized from female abdominal tips by classical and electroantennogram techniques as rans-6,cis-11-hexadecadienyl acetate and trans-6,cis-11-hexadecadienal. A 90 : 10 mixture of acetate and aldehyde was highly attractive to wild males in the field. The synthetic pheromone and A. polyphemus females were not attractive to released Antheraea pernyi males.  相似文献

Growth and population density of the larvae, Hynobius nebulosus tokyoensisTago , were estimated in a small pond within the study site settled in Habu village of Hinodemachi, a suburb of Tokyo City, during the period from 1975 to 1980. The mortality factors which influenced the survival rate of larvae were also evaluated from the ecological point of view. Laboratory experiments on the growth of larvae and predation by newts were conducted in pararell with the field survey. The results showed that growth rate of larvae under the natural condition was very slow, as compared with that under the laboratory condition with sufficient food supply, and mean body size at metamorphosis was negatively correlated with the density at that time. This suggested that food resources were in short supply in the pond, and there occurred a severe intraspecific competition for food among larvae. The mortality rate of larvae was so high, 80–99% in each year, and the density of larvae survived until metamorphosis varied so greatly from year to year that the larval stage was the most important stage throughout the life cycle to the maintenance of a population for this salamander. The most important factors which contributed to this high mortality were the predation by the newt, Triturus pyrrhogaster pyrrhogasterBoie , and cannibalism. From the laboratory experiment, it was found that predators could attack only small larvae successfully, and successful attack rate decreased sharply as larvae grew larger. This relationship resulted in the characteristic L-shaped pattern of survivorship curve of larvae; that is, heavy mortality just after hatching period.  相似文献

Exposure to high-dose radiation results in detrimental effects on survival. The effects of combined trauma, such as radiation in combination with hemorrhage, the typical injury of victims exposed to a radiation blast, on survival and hematopoietic effects have yet to be understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of radiation injury (RI) combined with hemorrhage (i.e., combined injury, CI) on survival and hematopoietic effects, and to investigate whether hemorrhage (Hemo) enhanced RI-induced mortality and hematopoietic syndrome. Male CD2F1 mice (10 weeks old) were given one single exposure of γ- radiation (60Co) at various doses (0.6 Gy/min). Within 2 hr after RI, animals under anesthesia were bled 0% (Sham) or 20% (Hemo) of total blood volume via the submandibular vein. In these mice, Hemo reduced the LD50/30 for 30-day survival from 9.1 Gy (RI) to 8.75 Gy (CI) with a DMF of 1.046. RI resulted in leukocytopenia, thrombopenia, erythropenia, and bone marrow cell depletion, but decreased the caspase-3 activation response. RI increased IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17A, and TNF-α concentrations in serum, bone marrow, ileum, spleen, and kidney. Some of these adverse alterations were magnified by CI. Erythropoietin production was increased in kidney and blood more after CI than RI. Furthermore, CI altered the global miRNAs expression in kidney and the ingenuity pathway analysis showed that miRNAs viz., let-7e, miR-30e and miR-29b that were associated with hematopoiesis and inflammation. This study provides preliminary evidence that non-lethal Hemo exacerbates RI-induced mortality and cell losses associated with high-dose γ-radiation. We identified some of the initial changes occurring due to CI which may have facilitated in worsening the injury and hampering the recovery of animals ultimately resulting in higher mortality.  相似文献

The fractionation of the stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes between two species of marine amphipods and their food sources was investigated in both field and laboratory studies. The nitrogen isotope ratios showed a strong species effect. Amphithoe valida Smith grown in the laboratory averaged ?0.3‰ relative to several food sources. Parhyale hawaiensis (Dana) was +2.3‰ relative to its diets. Animals from the field showed similar differences from the macrophytic algae on which they were found. The carbon isotope composition of both species averaged ?0.7‰ relative to their diets. Laboratory animals fed fresh algae were slightly more negative than field animals or animals fed detrital algae.  相似文献

The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is the most important commercial oyster species cultivated in the world. Meanwhile, the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) is one of the major pathogens affecting the Pacific oyster, and numerous mortality outbreaks related to this pathogen are now reported worldwide. To assess the genetic basis of resistance to OsHV-1 infection in spat C. gigas and to facilitate breeding programs for such a trait, if any exist, we compared the mortality of half- and full-sib families using three field methods and a controlled challenge by OsHV-1 in the laboratory. In the field, three methods were tested: (A) one family per bag; (B) one family per small soft mesh bag and all families inside one bag; (C) same as the previous methods but the oysters were individually labelled and then mixed. The mean mortality ranged from 80 to 82% and was related to OsHV-1 based on viral DNA detection. The narrow-sense heritability for mortality, and thus OsHV-1 resistance, ranged from 0.49 to 0.60. The high positive genetic correlations across the field methods suggested no genotype by environment interaction. Ideally, selective breeding could use method B, which is less time- and space-consuming. The narrow sense heritability for mortality under OsHV-1 challenge was 0.61, and genetic correlation between the field and the laboratory was ranged from 0.68 to 0.75, suggesting a weak genotype by environment interaction. Thus, most of families showing the highest survival performed well in field and laboratory conditions, and a similar trend was also observed for families with the lowest survival. In conclusion, this is the first study demonstrating a large additive genetic variation for resistance to OsHV-1 infection in C. gigas, regardless of the methods used, which should help in selective breeding to improve resistance to viral infection in C. gigas.  相似文献

Population dynamics of marine invertebrates is controlled by a variety of abiotic and biotic factors. Among these, some have received lesser attention from marine ecologists because of their ‘discrete’ nature. This is the case of parasitism and bacterial load. In the present study, we focused on the role that both digenean trematodes and heterotrophic aerobic bacteria might play in the mortality and burying behaviour of cockles, Cerastoderma edule. The bivalves were sampled monthly during 1 year from two sites in Arcachon Bay (French Atlantic coast). Mortality rates were assessed after transferring in the laboratory normally buried and unburied (i.e. found lying at the sediment surface at low tide) cockles. Their digenean and bacterial loads were determined for both positions (normally buried and unburied). Mortality rate was significantly higher for cockles found out of the sediment at low tide, suggesting that this abnormal position was a prelude to cockles' death. Comparison of digenean load of cockles showed no significant difference between buried and unburied bivalves. In contrast, bacterial load was significantly higher in unburied cockles than in normally buried animals. The effect of high concentration of a marine bacterial strain (Pseudomonas fluorescens) on cockles' burying behaviour and mortality was tested in the laboratory. Results showed that these bacteria could trigger the emergence of animals from the sediment but did not cause cockles' death. These field observations and laboratory experiments suggest that bacteria, rather than digenean trematodes, could play a role in the emergence of cockles and, hence, affect their survival in the wild.  相似文献

Background: Relative survival is an extensively used method in population based cancer studies as it provides a measure of survival without the need for accurate cause of death information. It gives an estimate for the probability of dying from cancer in the absence of other causes by estimating the excess mortality in the study population when compared to an external group. The external group is usually the general population within a country or state and mortality estimates are taken from national life tables that are broken down by age, sex, calendar year and, where applicable, race/ethnicity. One potential bias when using relative survival that is most often overlooked occurs when there are a high proportion of deaths due to a specific cancer in the external group. Methods: This paper uses data from the Finnish Cancer Registry to illustrate, through the use of a simple sensitivity analysis, the impact that specific cancer deaths in the population mortality figures can have on the estimate of relative survival. Results: We found that when examining specific diseases such as breast cancer and colon cancer, the proportion of deaths due to these specific cancers in the general population is so small in comparison to the total mortality that they make little difference to the relative survival estimates. However, prostate cancer proved to be an exception to this. For all cancer sites combined the sensitivity analysis illustrates a major limitation for this type of analysis, particularly with the older age groups. Conclusion: We recommend that, with a classification of diseases as wide as all cancer sites, relative survival should not be used without appropriate adjustment.  相似文献

A distinct annual reproductive cycle with spring spawning was observed in Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis Müller, Tonicella lineata Wood and Tonicella insignis Reeve. This study gives evidence that the cue for spawning in these species is the spring phytoplankton bloom. In 1973 spawning occurred abruptly in early April at the time of the spring phytoplankton outburst, but in 1974 spawning was less abrupt corresponding to the slow development of the phytoplankton bloom in that year. Animals were collected prior to spawning and maintained in the laboratory under various temperature and light regimes: at 5 ° and 14 °C in darkness, and at 5 ° and 14 °C in light conditions similar to those in the field. These animals did not spawn when spawning occurred in the field, but animals returned to the field from the laboratory did spawn. In the laboratory a large proportion of animals spawned when they were exposed to phytoplankton collected with a 50μm mesh net. The results suggest that some substance bound to or released by phytoplankton stimulates spawning. For species with planktotrophic larvae the synchronization of spawning with the phytoplankton bloom increases the probability of favourable food and temperature conditions for the development of the larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

The effect of environmental factors is essential to the success of parasitoids as biological control agents, as it determines their foraging activity, development, and survival. The larval‐pupal parasitoid wasp Aganaspis daci (Weld) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) is known to have a very low fertility (i.e., offspring production) in the field in certain Mediterranean areas, probably due to its inability to efficiently oviposit under such climatic conditions. In this study, the percentage of parasitism and induced mortality (mortality of host pupae attributed to parasitoids, from which adults do not emerge) caused by this wasp to the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), was assessed under field conditions across 1 year, using medfly‐infested apples and parasitoid‐confined release in a lemon orchard of southeastern Spain. As A. daci is known to have very few emergences in the field, fertility was assessed in the laboratory from parasitized pupae recovered from the field. We found average parasitism rates of 27% and high induced mortality rates of 66% under field conditions. Consequently, medfly population reduction (total mortality of C. capitata caused by A. daci, i.e., induced mortality + % parasitism) was, on average, 87%. Parasitism and induced mortality varied throughout the year, depending on the average temperature and relative humidity. The interaction of these factors resulted in the highest parasitism rates at low mean temperature and humidity values; likewise, the highest percentages of induced mortality were obtained with a combination of high mean temperature and low mean humidity values. In conclusion, A. daci may exert a strong impact on medfly populations, being a good candidate for inundative field releases for the management of C. capitata in the Mediterranean Basin.  相似文献

Floods can inflict high mortality on terrestrial organisms, but may also promote adaptive evolution. In seasonal floodplains, several taxa show flood-related traits that may be important for their long-term persistence, but the available evidence is conflicting. Here, we used a simulation approach to investigate the interplay between seasonal floods and submersion resistance in driving the population dynamics of the parthenogenetic soil mite Rostrozetes ovulum in an Amazonian blackwater floodplain. First, we gathered data from two flood cycles to estimate field survival rate. Next, we used further data from a submersion survival laboratory experiment and a historical flood record to build a null model for R. ovulum’s survival rate under seasonal flooding, and then tested it against field survival estimates. Floods caused marked density declines, but the two estimates of field survival rate were statistically equivalent, suggesting relatively constant survival across years. Submersion survival time varied tenfold among individuals, but its variability was within the range known for life history traits of other asexual invertebrates. Both field survival rates were consistent with the null model, supporting seasonal flooding as the main mortality factor. Surprisingly, though, average flood duration was actually larger than the average mite could survive, suggesting that population persistence relies on relatively rare, super-resistant phenotypes. Overall, the studied R. ovulum population appears to have a mainly density-independent dynamics across years, with its viability depending on mechanisms that buffer flood survival rate against temporal oscillations.  相似文献

  • 1 A series of field and laboratory experiments was performed to test the possible influence of food limitation on UVR tolerance in the calanoid copepod Diaptomusminutus.
  • 2 Food‐limited animals incubated at 0.5 m in a clear‐water lake for over three days showed no evidence for increased mortality compared to food‐replete animals when exposed to UVR.
  • 3 Animals exposed to artificial UVR in the laboratory showed high mortality. There was no evidence that feeding improved UVR tolerance.
  • 4 The results of these experiments show that UVR tolerance is not affected by a short‐term lack of energy or a lack of essential nutrients. However, effects of non‐nutritive dietary components such as carotenoids and mycosporine‐like amino acids cannot be excluded.

Cassida rubiginosa Müller (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), one of the most conspicuous defoliators of thistle weeds, is capable of severely damaging thistle leaves; however, populations rarely reach sufficient density for effective thistle control under natural conditions. To investigate the impact of natural mortality factors on C. rubiginosa populations, life table studies were conducted between 1996 and 1998 in Kanazawa, Japan. Egg mortality, mortality in early larvae, and lost fertility contributed strongly to total generational mortality in every year studied. Egg mortality was primarily attributable to parasitism by wasps of the genus Anaphes, and the impact of predation and egg inviability was small. Mortality factors that affected the larval and pupal stages were largely unknown. Under field conditions, females only realized approximately 8.1?C13.7?% of their potential fecundity, varying from 36.0 to 61.4 eggs per individual. Since annual changes in lost fertility exhibited a similar pattern to those in generational mortality, fertility loss might be the key factor driving C. rubiginosa populations. These results suggest that reproduction is the most important process that determines the level and fluctuation of the C. rubiginosa population.  相似文献

Overwintering survival of Filipjevimermis leipsandra postparasitic adults ranged from 12 to 15% over 2 years. Nematodes recovered from biweekly samples oviposited within a week when exposed to warm temperatures. More nematodes were recovered from the lower portions of soil cores than from the upper. In laboratory tests of cold tolerance, the LD₅₀ at -5 C was 5.5 hours, whereas exposure to -2 C for as long as 96 hours resulted in no mortality.  相似文献

The pycnogonid Nymphon gracile (Leach) has been shown to have an endogenous activity rhythm of tidal frequency, the peak of activity occurring at, or just after, expected high water. Animals collected littorally show some rhythmicity at all times of the year. The rhythm drifts in most individuals when recorded in the laboratory at 20°C, but some animals collected in winter and recorded at 9°C, did not show any drift.  相似文献

Crustaceans are second intermediate hosts to several microphallid species (Trematoda). Some of these parasites are potentially pathogenic or manipulative. A laboratory experiment was performed to assess the impact of microphallids on the survival, growth and fecundity of Cyathura carinata, a protogynous hermaphroditic isopod, widespread within European estuaries. For nearly 12 weeks, experimental populations of infected and non-infected isopods were kept at 25 °C. C. carinata carrying microphallid cysts showed higher mortality rates than non-infected specimens and were not able to produce embryos. The reduced fecundity of infected isopods could be caused by parasite-induced castration and/or by mating failure due to behavioural modifications in one of the sexes. It might also be associated with lower growth rates and lower moulting frequencies, since infected C. carinata were significantly smaller than the non-infected after 9 weeks. This may imply a setback for the isopods to achieve sexual maturity (which may also affect the population sex ratio) and for females to lay their eggs in the marsupia. Regardless of the mechanisms involved, microphallids may have severe consequences for their host populations, through negative effects on survival, growth and fecundity. For species with direct development, such as C. carinata, parasite-induced reproduction failure may contribute to temporal fluctuations of abundance. Based on the present results, it is recommended to include parasites as an important factor influencing host populations from shallow-water ecosystems.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Field and laboratory investigations were combined in a 2‐year study on the initiation of a midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata Sars in a hypertrophic reservoir. Quantitative field samples were taken twice a week, and, adult and juvenile mortality rates were calculated. Patterns of reproduction and survival of daphnids born during spring and early summer under fluctuating food conditions were determined in life‐table experiments. 2. The abundance of Daphnia increased strongly in early May and declined in June 1998 (midsummer decline). In 1999, Daphnia density increased only slowly in spring and remained constantly high throughout the summer. 3. Food conditions (concentrations of POC<30 μm) for daphnids deteriorated in both years in response to increasing Daphnia densities, resulting in a clear‐water phase of about 4 weeks. When Daphnia abundance declined in 1998, POC<30 μm concentrations increased greatly, whereas in 1999 food conditions improved only slightly and Secchi depth remained high. 4. Survival of daphnids in life‐table experiments decreased greatly after food became rare and was strongly reduced in those animals born during the clear‐water phase compared with those born later. In addition, age at first reproduction was retarded during the clear‐water phase, resulting in very low population growth rates. Survivorship patterns in life‐table experiments suggest a strong impact of non‐consumptive mortality on Daphnia population dynamics. 5. Field data of mortality point to differences in mortality patterns between years, probably resulting from different predation impacts of juvenile fish. In both years, however, adult mortality contributed substantially to overall mortality at the end of the clear‐water phase. As bottom‐up effects on D. galeata were very similar in both years, the significance of non‐consumptive mortality on the initiation of midsummer declines appears to depend largely on recruitment patterns before the clear‐water phase. A high impact can be expected when Daphnia populations are dominated by a peak cohort of nearly identical age during the clear‐water phase.  相似文献

In contrast to the conditions in most laboratory studies, wild animals are routinely challenged by multiple infections simultaneously, and these infections can interact in complex ways. This means that the impact of a parasite on its host’s physiology and fitness cannot be fully assessed in isolation, and requires consideration of the interactions with other co-infections. Here we examine the impact of two common blood parasites in the field vole (Microtus agrestis): Babesia microti and Bartonella spp., both of which have zoonotic potential. We collected longitudinal and cross-sectional data from four populations of individually tagged wild field voles. This included data on biometrics, life history, ectoparasite counts, presence/absence of microparasites, immune markers and, for a subset of voles, more detailed physiological and immunological measurements. This allowed us to monitor infections over time and to estimate components of survival and fecundity. We confirm, as reported previously, that B. microti has a preventative effect on infection with Bartonella spp., but that the reverse is not true. We observed gross splenomegaly following B. microti infection, and an increase in IL-10 production together with some weight loss following Bartonella spp. infection. However, these animals appeared otherwise healthy and we detected no impact of infection on survival or fecundity due to the two haemoparasite taxa. This is particularly remarkable in the case of B. microti which induces apparently drastic long-term changes to spleen sizes, but without major adverse effects. Our work sheds light on the ecologies of these important zoonotic agents, and more generally on the influence that interactions among multiple parasites have on their hosts in the wild.
