Termite mounds contribute to the spatial heterogeneity of ecological processes in many savannas, but the underlying patterns and determinants of mound distributions remain poorly understood. Using the Carnegie Airborne Observatory (CAO), we mapped the distribution of termite mounds across a rainfall gradient within a river catchment (~ 27 000 ha) of the Kruger National Park, South Africa. We assessed how different factors were associated with the distribution and height of termite mounds at three spatial scales: the entire catchment, among three broad vegetation types, and on individual hillslope crests. Abiotic factors such as the underlying geology and mean annual precipitation shaped mound densities at broad scales, while local hillslope morphology strongly influenced mound distribution at finer scales, emphasising the importance of spatial scale when assessing mound densities. Fire return period had no apparent association with mound densities or height. Mound density averaged 0.46 mounds ha?1, and exhibited a clustered pattern throughout the landscape, occurring at relatively high densities (up to 2 mounds ha?1) on crests, which are nutrient‐poor elements of the landscape. Mounds exhibited significant over‐dispersion (even spacing) at scales below 60 m so that evenly spaced aggregations of termite mounds are embedded within a landscape of varying mound densities. The tallest mounds were found in dry savanna (500 mm yr?1) and were positively correlated with mound density, suggesting that dry granitic savannas are ideal habitat for mound‐building termites. Mound activity status also varied significantly across the rainfall gradient, with a higher proportion of active (live) mounds in the drier sites. The differential spacing of mounds across landscapes provides essential nutrient hotspots in crest locations, potentially sustaining species that would otherwise not persist. The contribution to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning that mounds provide is not uniform throughout landscapes, but varies considerably with spatial scale and context.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of mound-building termites on soil particle dynamics on the land surface and in soil-forming processes by examining the amount of soil particles in mound structures of Macrotermes bellicosus in a highly weathered Ultisol of tropical savanna. Soil particle turnover via the mounds was estimated using particle stock data and soil turnover data from previous studies. A 4-ha study plot with six mounds of relatively uniform shape and size was investigated. Soil mass constituting the mounds was 6,166 ± 1,581 kg mound−1 within which the mound wall and nest body accounted for 5,002 ± 1,289 and 1,164 ± 293 kg, respectively. The mound wall contained a significantly larger amount of clay (252 ± 9.97 g kg−1) balanced with a lower sand content (676 ± 26.5 g kg−1) than in the adjacent surface (Ap1) horizon, (46.4 ± 12.8 g clay kg−1; 866 ± 83.2 g sand kg−1); the nest body had much higher clay content (559 ± 51.0 g kg−1) but less sand (285 ± 79.2 g kg−1) than the mound wall. As a result, the mounds of M. bellicosus accumulated clay of 2,874 ± 781 kg ha−1 (corresponding to 2.52% of clay stock in the Ap1 horizon) along with an estimated clay turnover rate of 169 kg ha−1 year−1. These findings suggest a positive feedback effect from termite mound-building activity on soil particle dynamics in tropical savanna ecosystems: M. bellicosus preferentially use subsoil material for mound construction, resulting in relocation of illuvial clay in the subsoil to the land surface where clay eluviation from the surface soil and its illuviation in the subsoil are major soil-forming processes.  相似文献

Summary Termite mound densities in typical guinea savanna, Detarium, and grassland (boval) habitats in northern guinea savanna were determined by random quadratting of 2–3 sites in each habitat (100, 10x10 m quadrats per habitat). Dominant species in guinea savanna were T. geminatus (46 mounds ha-1) and T. oeconomus (21 mounds ha-1), in Detarium T. geminatus (59 mounds ha-1) and C. curtatus (45 mounds ha-1) and in boval C. curtatus (72 mounds ha-1) and T. geminatus (22 mounds ha-1). Only C. curtatus densities and total densities differed significantly between sites within habitats, but all species differed significantly in abundance between habitats. The composition of each community was related to general environment but no particular environmental variable was shown to be a major determinant of termite distribution. Evidence for the limitation of termite populations was obtained from indirect evidence of competition between colonies in Detarium, and by experimental manipulation of fire regimes in the typical guinea savanna habitat. Harvester termites increased four-five fold over two years in fire-protected plots as a result of increased food supplies. Total termite densities in the fire-protected community equilibrated to the new population density (100 mounds ha-1) after only two-three years.  相似文献

Iron (Fe) is ubiquitous in forest ecosystems and its cycle is thought to influence the development of soil, particularly Spodosols (podsolization), and the biogeochemistry of macronutrients such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), as well as many trace metals. The cycle of Fe in northern hardwood forests remains poorly understood. To address some of these uncertainties, we constructed a biogeochemical budget of Fe for a small catchment at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA. Horizonal, temporal, and elevational patterns of concentrations and fluxes of oxidized and reduced Fe species were assessed in leaf litter, soil, soil solution, and stream water. The chemistry of dissolved Fe was evaluated in the context of its relationship with dissolved organic carbon, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Soil solution fluxes of Fe were highest in the organic (Oa, 52.5 mol ha?1 year?1) horizon and decreased with depth in the mineral (Bh, 50.5 mol ha?1 year?1, and Bs, 19.7 mol ha?1 year?1) horizons, consistent with podsolization theories predicting immobilization of Fe following downward transport to mineral soils. The export of Fe in stream water (1.8 mol ha?1 year?1) was lower than precipitation input (3.5 mol ha?1 year?1). The low stream flux indicates most Fe in drainage waters was immobilized in the soil and retained in the watershed. The portion of total Fe as Fe(II) was ~10?C60% in soil solutions, seemingly high for soils that are considered to be well-drained, oxidizing environments. Organic complexes likely stabilized Fe(II) in solution under oxidizing conditions that would otherwise promote considerably higher Fe(III)-to-Fe(II) ratios. Our study indicates that there are organic matter-derived sources of dissolved Fe(II) as well as substantial mobilization of Fe(II), possibly the result of the reduction of Fe-bearing soil minerals.  相似文献

Increasing demand for food and fibre by the growing human population is driving significant land use (LU) change from forest into intensively managed land systems in tropical areas. But empirical evidence on the extent to which such changes affect the soil-atmosphere exchange of trace gases is still scarce, especially in Africa. We investigated the effect of LU on soil trace gas production in the Mau Forest Complex region, Kenya. Intact soil cores were taken from natural forest, commercial and smallholder tea plantations, eucalyptus plantations and grazing lands, and were incubated in the lab under different soil moisture conditions. Soil fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), nitric oxide (NO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were quantified, and we approximated annual estimates of soil N2O and NO fluxes using soil moisture values measured in situ. Forest and eucalyptus plantations yielded annual fluxes of 0.3–1.3 kg N2O–N ha?1 a?1 and 1.5–5.2 kg NO–N ha?1 a?1. Soils of commercial tea plantations, which are highly fertilized, showed higher fluxes (0.9 kg N2O–N ha?1 a?1 and 4.3 kg NO–N ha?1 a?1) than smallholder tea plantations (0.1 kg N2O–N ha?1 a?1 and 2.1 kg NO–N ha?1 a?1) or grazing land (0.1 kg N2O–N ha?1 a?1 and 1.1 kg NO–N ha?1 a?1). High soil NO fluxes were probably the consequence of long-term N fertilization and associated soil acidification, likely promoting chemodenitrification. Our experimental approach can be implemented in understudied regions, with the potential to increase the amount of information on production and consumption of trace gases from soils.  相似文献

Plant productivity in many tropical savannas is phosphorus limited. The biogeochemical cycling of P in these ecosystems, however, has not been well quantified. In the present study, we characterized P stocks and fluxes in a well-preserved small watershed in the Brazilian Cerrado. As the Cerrado is also a fire-dominated ecosystem, we measured the P stocks and fluxes in a cerrado stricto sensu plot with complete exclusion of fire for 26 years (unburned plot) and then tested some predictions about the impacts of fire impacts on P cycling in an experimental plot that was burned three times since 1992 (burned plot). The unburned area is an ecosystem with large soil stocks of total P (1,151 kg ha?1 up to 50 cm depth), but the largest fraction is in an occluded form. Readily extractable P was found up to 3 m soil depth suggesting that deep soil is more important to the P cycle than has been recognized. The P stock in belowground biomass (0?C800 cm) was 9.9 kg ha?1. Decomposition of fine litter released 0.97 kg P ha?1 year?1. Fluxes of P through bulk atmospheric deposition, throughfall and litter leachate were very low (0.008, 0.006 and 0.028 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively) as was stream export (0.001 kg ha?1 year?1). Immobilization of P by microbes during the rainy season seems to be an important mechanism of P conservation in this ecosystem. Fire significantly increased P flux in litter leachate to 0.11 kg ha?1 year?1, and added 1.2 kg ha?1 of P in ash deposition after fire. We found an increase of P concentration in soil solution at 100 cm depth (from 0.03 ??g l?1 in unburned plot to 0.3 ??g l?1 in the burned plot). In surface soils (0?C10 cm) of the burned plot, fire decreased the concentrations of extractable organic-P fractions, but did not significantly increase inorganic-P fractions. The reduction of extractable soil organic P in the burned plot in topsoil and the increase of P in the soil solution at greater depths indicated a reduction of P availability and may increase P fixation in deep soils. Repeated fire events over the long term may result in significant net loss of available forms of phosphorus from this ecosystem.  相似文献

Biometric-based carbon flux measurements were conducted in a pine forest on lava flow of Mt. Fuji, Japan, in order to estimate carbon cycling and sequestration. The forest consists mainly of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora) in a canopy layer and Japanese holly (Ilex pedunculosa) in a subtree layer. The lava remains exposed on the ground surface, and the soil on the lava flow is still immature with no mineral soil layer. The results showed that the net primary production (NPP) of the forest was 7.3 ± 0.7 t C ha?1 year?1, of which 1.4 ± 0.4 t C ha?1 year?1 was partitioned to biomass increment, 3.2 ± 0.5 t C ha?1 year?1 to above-ground fine litter production, 1.9 t C ha?1 year?1 to fine root production, and 0.8 ± 0.2 t C ha?1 year?1 to coarse woody debris. The total amount of annual soil surface CO2 efflux was estimated as 6.1 ± 2.9 t C ha?1 year?1, using a closed chamber method. The estimated decomposition rate of soil organic matter, which subtracted annual root respiration from soil respiration, was 4.2 ± 3.1 t C ha?1 year?1. Biometric-based net ecosystem production (NEP) in the pine forest was estimated at 2.9 ± 3.2 t C ha?1 year?1, with high uncertainty due mainly to the model estimation error of annual soil respiration and root respiration. The sequestered carbon being allocated in roughly equal amounts to living biomass (1.4 t C ha?1 year?1) and the non-living C pool (1.5 t C ha?1 year?1). Our estimate of biometric-based NEP was 25 % lower than the eddy covariance-based NEP in this pine forest, due partly to the underestimation of NPP and difficulty of estimation of soil and root respiration in the pine forest on lava flows that have large heterogeneity of soil depth. However, our results indicate that the mature pine forest acted as a significant carbon sink even when established on lava flow with low nutrient content in immature soils, and that sequestration strength, both in biomass and in soil organic matter, is large.  相似文献

Aims

Effects of different soil amendments were investigated on methane (CH4) emission, soil quality parameters and rice productivity in irrigated paddy field of Bangladesh.

Methods

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and three replications. The experimental treatments were urea (220 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) as a control, urea (170 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + sesbania biomass (2 t ha?1 ) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + azolla biomass (2 t ha?1) + cyanobacterial mixture 15 kg ha?1 silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + cattle manure compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer.

Results

The average of two growing seasons CH4 flux 132 kg ha?1 was recorded from the conventional urea (220 kg ha?1) with rice straw compost incorporated field plot followed by 126.7 (4 % reduction), 130.7 (1.5 % reduction), 116 (12 % reduction) and 126 (5 % reduction) kg CH4 flux ha?1 respectively, with rice straw compost, sesbania biomass, azolla anabaena and cattle manure compost in combination urea and silicate fertilizer applied plots. Rice grain yield was increased by 15 % and 10 % over the control (4.95 Mg ha?1) with silicate plus composted cattle manure and silicate plus azolla anabaena, respectively. Soil quality parameters such as soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, soil redox status and cations exchange capacity were improved with the added organic materials and azolla biofertilizer amendments with silicate slag and optimum urea application (170 kg ha?1) in paddy field.

Conclusion

Integrated application of silicate fertilizer, well composted organic manures and azolla biofertilizer could be an effective strategy to minimize the use of conventional urea fertilizer, reducing CH4 emissions, improving soil quality parameters and increasing rice productivity in subtropical countries like Bangladesh.  相似文献

Fossorial mammals may affect nutrient dynamics and vegetation in recently initiated primary successional ecosystems differently than in more developed systems because of strong C and N limitation to primary productivity and microbial communities. We investigated northern pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) effects on soil nutrient dynamics, soil physical properties, and plant communities on surfaces created by Mount St. Helens’ 1980 eruption. For comparison to later successional systems, we summarized published studies on gopher effects on soil C and N and plant communities. In 2010, 18 years after gopher colonization, we found that gophers were active in ~2.5 % of the study area and formed ~328 mounds ha?1. Mounds exhibited decreased species density compared to undisturbed areas, while plant abundance on mound margins increased 77 %. Plant burial increased total soil carbon (TC) by 13 % and nitrogen (TN) by 11 %, compared to undisturbed soils. Mound crusts decreased water infiltration, likely explaining the lack of detectable increases in rates of NO3–N, NH4–N or PO4–P leaching out of the rooting zone or in CO2 flux rates. We concluded that plant burial and reduced infiltration on gopher mounds may accelerate soil carbon accumulation, facilitate vegetation development at mound edges through resource concentration and competitive release, and increase small-scale heterogeneity of soils and communities across substantial sections of the primary successional landscape. Our review indicated that increases in TC, TN and plant density at mound margins contrasted with later successional systems, likely due to differences in physical effects and microbial resources between primary successional and older systems.  相似文献

The present study determined the plant biomass (aboveground and belowground) of Salicornia brachiata from six different salt marshes distributed in Indian coastal area over one growing season (September 2014–May 2015). The nutrients concentration and their pools were estimated in plant as well as soil. Belowground biomass in S. brachiata was usually lower than the aboveground biomass. Averaged over different locations, highest biomass was observed in the month of March (2.1 t ha?1) followed by May (1.64 t ha?1), February (1.60 t ha?1), November (0.82 t ha?1) and September (0.05 t ha?1). The averaged aboveground to belowground ratio was 12.0. Aboveground and belowground biomass were negatively correlated with pH of soil, while positively with soil electrical conductivity. Further, there were positive relationships between organic carbon and belowground biomass; and available sodium and aboveground biomass. The nutrient pools in aboveground were always higher than to belowground biomass. Aboveground pools of carbon (543 kg ha?1), nitrogen (48 kg ha?1), phosphorus (4 kg ha?1), sodium (334 kg ha?1) and potassium (37 kg ha?1) were maximum in the month of March 2015. Bioaccumulation and translocation factors for sodium of S. brachiata were more than one showing tolerance to salinity and capability of phytoremediation for the saline soil.  相似文献

The nitrogen (N) budget calculation approach is a useful means of evaluating the impact of human activity on the N cycle. Field scale N budget calculations may ignore the interactions between landscapes, and regional scale calculations rely on statistical data and indirect parameters. Watershed scale budget calculations allow for a more direct quantification of N inputs and outputs. We conducted N budget calculations for a rice paddy-dominated agricultural watershed in eastern China for 2007?C2009, based on intensive monitoring of stream N dynamics, atmospheric deposition, ammonia (NH3) volatilization and household interviews about N-related agricultural activities. The results showed that although total N input to the watershed was up to 280 kg N ha?1 year?1, riverine discharge was only 4.2 kg N ha?1 year?1, accounting for 1.5% of the total N input, and was further reduced to 2.0 kg N ha?1 year?1 after reservoir storage and/or denitrification removal. The low riverine N output was because of the characteristics of the rice paddy-dominated landscape, which intercepts run-off and enhances soil denitrification. The watershed actually purified the N in rainwater, as N concentrations in river discharge were much lower than those in rain water. Major N outputs included food/feed export, NH3 volatilization from chemical fertilizer and manure, and emissions from crop residue burning. Net reactive gaseous emissions (emissions minus deposition) accounted for 5.5% of the total N input, much higher than riverine discharge. Therefore, the agricultural N cycle in such paddy-dominated watersheds impacts the environment mainly through gas exchange rather than water discharge.  相似文献

Green harvest sugarcane management has increased soil organic C and N stocks over time. However, emerging sugarcane straw removal to meet increasing bioenergy demands has raised concerns about soil C and N depletions. Thus, we conducted a field study in southeast Brazil over nearly three years (1100 days) for assessing soil C and N responses to increasing sugarcane straw removal rates. In order to detect the C input as a function of the different amounts of straw over three years, a field simulation was performed, where the original soil layer (0–0.30 m) was replaced by another from an adjacent area with low total C and δ13C. The treatments tested were as follows: (i) 0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., 100% removal), (ii) 3.5 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., 75% removal), (iii) 7.0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., 50% removal), (iv) 14.0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., no removal), and (v) 21.0 Mg ha?1 year?1 (i.e., no removal + extra 50% of the straw left on the field). The results showed that sugarcane straw removal affected the soil C and total N pools. In the first 45 days of straw decomposition, a small but important straw-derived C portion enters into the soil as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The lower the straw removal rate, the higher was straw-derived DOC content found into the soil, down to 0.50 m depth. After 3 years of management, keeping sugarcane straw on soil surface significantly increased C and N stocks within surface soil layer (0–0.025 m). Our findings suggest that under no straw removal management (i.e., 14 Mg ha?1), approximately 364 kg ha?1 of C and 23 kg ha?1 of N are annually stored into this low-C soil. The contribution of the straw-derived C (C-C4) to the total soil C increases over time, which accounted for about 60% under no straw removal rate. The greatest contribution of the C storage preferentially occurs into the fraction of organic matter (<?0.53 μm) associated with soil clay minerals. We concluded that indiscriminate sugarcane straw removal to produce cellulosic ethanol or bioelectricity depletes soil C stocks and reduces N cycling in sugarcane fields, impairing environmental gains associated with bioenergy production. Therefore, this information, linked with other agronomic and environmental issues, should be taken into account towards a more sustainable straw removal management for bioenergy production in Brazil.  相似文献

A new methodological approach is described for estimating Ca, Mg and K fluxes from soil mineral weathering. This method combines Na flux in surface waters in the Hermine watershed with base cation (BC) concentrations to Na molar ratios from the soil weatherable pool obtained using sequential extraction method. Comparison of BC:Na molar ratios of the weatherable pool with those from other compartments of the watershed suggests possible accumulation of base cations in some areas of the watershed, while losses or minimal changes are observed in others. On average, present day Na weathering rates estimated using the watershed input–output budget method was 0.26 (range 0.16–0.36) kmolc ha?1 yearr?1, over the period of 1995–2006. For Ca, Mg and K, present day weathering rates estimated with the new methodological approach averaged 0.44 (range 0.27–0.60), 0.11 (range 0.07–0.15) and 0.02 (range 0.01–0.02) kmolc ha?1 year?1, respectively. These values are within the range of present day rates previously calculated for the same site and for forested soils from similar granitic environments using other methods. Candidate models for predicting BC weathering rates on individual annual observations were developed using Akaike’s information criterion. The best model includes the number of frost days (inverse relationship) and explained 51% of the variation in total BC weathering rates. The newly developed method may be applicable to other watersheds, providing yearly estimates of nutrient BC at the watershed scale.  相似文献

Ongoing socio-economic and climatic changes can differentially affect the biogeochemistry of the key nutrients nitrogen (N), silica (Si), and phosphorus (P) by altering their soil budgets, their transfer to aquatic environments and their ecological stoichiometry. This may lead to cascade consequences for aquatic communities and biogeochemical processes. Soil budgets, river export, and N, Si, and P ecological stoichiometry were assessed in a heavy impacted basin (Mincio River, Italy) in two decades (1991–2000; 2001–2010). The main aim was to analyse element-specific mechanisms of terrestrial-aquatic transport and retention within aquatic habitats. Budget results suggest a net accumulation (inputs exceeding outputs) of all nutrients in agricultural lands, mainly due to livestock manure, with a reduction for N (196 kg N ha?1 year?1 in 2000, and 132 kg N ha?1 year?1 in 2010), and constant values for Si (up to 3 kg Si ha?1 year?1) and P (43 kg P ha?1 year?1) along the study period. River export of N and P accounted for 3–27% and?~?2% of N and P soil net accumulation, respectively, while Si export was significantly greater (25 kg Si ha?1 year?1) than Si net accumulation on farmlands. The stoichiometry of net nutrient accumulation in soils was not reflected by the stoichiometry of nutrient riverine export, due to element-specific mechanisms. We speculate that N and Si vertical and horizontal mobilization is increased by the irrigation loop, while P retention is favored by limited erosion due to limited slopes in the Mincio River basin. The simultaneous analysis of N, Si and P allows us to better understand the different paths, transformation and retention mechanisms at the watershed scale.  相似文献

Summary Nest and soil populations of Trinervitermes spp. were estimated on grazed secondary savanna woodland near Mokwa cattle ranch and on primary savanna woodland, 6 km from the ranch. Nest populations were estimated by obtaining a relationship between size of nest and the number of termites in the nest and using the relationship to estimate populations in measured nests within the study area.Mound populations of T. geminatus, by far the most abundant species, were 222 m-2 at a mound density of 232 ha-1 at the ranch, and 225 m-2 at a mound density of 175 ha-1 on primary savanna woodland. The mound population at the ranch represented a fresh weight biomass of 1.089 g m-2. Changes in abundance of the mound population of T. geminatus were correlated with breeding and foraging cycles. Maximum numbers (388 m-2, 2.03 g m-2) in August/September were reduced by the flight of alates and loss of foragers to predators; thereafter, the population continued to decrease (126 m-2, 0.57 g m-2) until the cessation of foraging in April/May and numbers of larvae and nymphs began to increase. Soil and mound sampling in primary and secondary savanna showed that although T. geminatus is a mound inhabiting species, two thirds of the mound plus soil population was outside the mounds giving a total population of 737 m-2 (3.08 g m-2). Alate production was estimated at 15.5 m-2 (0.19 g m-2) and neuter production at 367 m-2 (1.66 g m-2); production/biomass ratio was 1.0 T. togoensis (total population of 21 m-2) and T. occidentalis (200 m-2) had 90–96% of the total numbers outside the mounds, indicating that these two species were primarily subterranean.  相似文献

Grassland canopy management (spring burn, mowing and residue removal in late-summer, or no management) and native tallgrass species composition (cool season mixture, warm season mixture, or combined cool and warm mixture) effects on C and N in aboveground biomass and soil were investigated at Brookings SD on a previously-plowed Barnes clay loam (fine-loamy, superactive, frigid Calcic Hapludoll). During the last 2 yr of the 9-yr experiment, shoot biomass was affected by canopy management with the burn (2,730 kg ha?1) and mow (3,421 kg ha?1) treatments containing less than no management (4,655 kg ha?1). Burn treatment biomass contained 1,189 kg ha?1 and 25 kg ha?1 of C and N, mow contained 1,433 kg ha?1 and 33 kg ha?1 of C and N, while no management contained 2,014 kg ha?1 and 39 kg ha?1 of C and N, respectively. Soil C accumulation was independent of grass species composition. Soil C accumulation rates, which increased in strong linear fashion (r 2 of 0.89 to 0.92) after initial grass establishment, were 387 kg C ha?1 yr?1, 503 kg C ha?1 yr?1, and 711 kg C ha?1 yr?1 for burn, mow, and no management treatments, respectively. Thus, grassland management methods used after conversion of cropland to grassland have important effects on grass biomass and soil C accumulation.  相似文献

Secondary mixed forests are one of the dominant forest cover types in human-dominated temperate regions. However, our understanding of how secondary succession affects carbon cycling and carbon sequestration in these ecosystems is limited. We studied carbon cycling and net ecosystem production (NEP) over 4 years (2004–2008) in a cool-temperate deciduous forest at an early stage of secondary succession (18 years after clear-cutting). Net primary production of the 18-year-old forest in this study was 5.2 tC ha?1 year?1, including below-ground coarse roots; this was partitioned into 2.5 tC ha?1 year?1 biomass increment, 1.6 tC ha?1 year?1 foliage litter, and 1.0 tC ha?1 year?1 other woody detritus. The total amount of annual soil surface CO2 efflux was 6.8 tC ha?1 year?1, which included root respiration (1.9 tC ha?1 year?1) and heterotrophic respiration (RH) from soils (4.9 tC ha?1 year?1). The 18-year forest at this study site exhibited a great increase in biomass pool as a result of considerable total tree growth and low mortality of tree stems. In contrast, the soil organic matter (SOM) pool decreased markedly (?1.6 tC ha?1 year?1), although further study of below-ground detritus production and RH of SOM decomposition is needed. This young 18-year forest was a weak carbon sink (0.9 tC ha?1 year?1) at this stage of secondary succession. The NEP of this 18-year forest is likely to increase gradually because biomass increases with tree growth and with the improvement of the SOM pool through increasing litter and dead wood production with stand development.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of different organic and inorganic fertilizers on the functional diversity of soil microbial community under a vegetable production system. The Biolog® Eco-plate technique and indices, such as average well-colour development (AWCD), McIntosh and Shannon diversity were employed to study the diversity of soil microorganisms. The AWCD, i.e. overall utilization of carbon sources, suggested that different organic treatments had a significant impact on the metabolic activity of soil microorganisms. After 120 h, the highest AWCD values were observed in poultry manure (2.5 t·ha?1) + vermicompost (3.5 t·ha?1) (0.63) and farm yard manure (FYM) (10 t·ha?1) + vermicompost (3.5 t·ha?1) (0.61). After 72 h, the highest value of the McIntosh diversity index was recorded in poultry manure (2.5 t·ha?1) + vermicompost (3.5 t·ha?1) (3.87), followed by poultry manure (2.5 t·ha?1) + vermicompost (3.5 t·ha?1) + biofertilizers (Azotobacter 500 g·ha?1 applied as seed treatment) (3.12). In the case of the Shannon diversity index, the highest values were noticed in organic treatments; however, there was no significant differences between organic and inorganic treatments. Biplot analysis showed a clear differentiation of organic treatments from the inorganic control. The amino acids, phenolics and polymer utilizing microorganisms were dominant in organic treatments. Inorganic control recorded the lowest values of the microbial diversity indices. Through this study, we have identified the best combination of organic nutrients, i.e. poultry manure (2.5 t·ha?1) + vermicompost (3.5 t·ha?1) for the stimulation of metabolically active soil microbial communities.  相似文献

We compared the soil C input potential of a common catch-crop (fodder radish) established in 6-year-old direct-drilled (DD) plots with adjacent conventionally tilled (CT) plots on a Danish sandy loam soil by use of 14C-isotope labelling techniques. Intact monoliths of soil with actively growing fodder radish seedlings were extracted in Autumn of 2008 from DD and CT field plots and labelled with 14CO2 at different time intervals during fodder radish growth. Labelled monoliths were then sampled 6 and 100 days after termination of labelling by clipping above-ground biomass at soil level and separating below-ground components into macro-roots and macro-root-free soil at 0?C10, 10?C25 and 25?C45 cm soil depth. Using fodder radish 14C data and the preceding spring barley biomass yield data we estimated C input from the spring barley-fodder radish cycle in addition to evaluating the effect of the removal of spring barley harvestable straw on soil C input. Potential soil C input under straw removal scenarios with and without an established fodder radish crop was also evaluated. Relative to other depths, over 70% of labelled below-ground C was found in the 0?C10 cm soil depth in both DD and CT treatments for each of the two samplings. For both macro-root and macro-root-free soil and in both tillage treatments, labelled C decreased significantly with depth (P?<?0.05). A decline of labeled C in macro-root but an increase of labeled C in macro-root-free soil was observed from day 6 to day 100 for both tillage treatments. Over the autumn-winter growing period, total below-ground C input by fodder radish within the 0?C45 cm soil depth was approximately 1.0 and 1.2 Mg C ha?1 for CT and DD, respectively. We used data from 100 days after labelling, which coincided with the incorporation of the field fodder radish biomass, to estimate that the total fodder radish contribution to below-ground C after biomass incorporation would range between 1.6 and 1.7 Mg C ha?1 for DD and CT, respectively. The figures for spring barley straw removal with fodder radish establishment would be between 4.9 and 5.1 Mg C ha?1, while with no fodder radish establishment, C input to the soil would range between 3.2 Mg C ha?1 and 3.4 Mg C ha?1, which is approximately 0.6 Mg C ha?1 lower than the 4 Mg C ha?1 biomass C input required to maintain long-term soil organic C. In comparison, under straw retention and fodder radish catch-crop establishment the total spring barley and fodder radish C input would be approximately 6.1 and 6.5 Mg C ha?1 for DD and CT, respectively. We conclude that fodder radish catch-crops have a potential for mitigating against soil C depletion resulting from export of cereal straw to other uses.  相似文献

Biomass demand for energy will lead to utilization of marginal, low fertility soil. Application of fertilizer to such soil may increase switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) biomass production. In this three-way factorial field experiment, biomass yield response to potassium (K) fertilizer (0 and 68 kg?K?ha?1) on nitrogen (N)-sufficient and N-deficient switchgrass (0 and 135 kg?N?ha?1) was evaluated under two harvest systems. Harvest system included harvesting once per year after frost (December) and twice per year in summer (July) at boot stage and subsequent regrowth after frost. Under the one-cut system, there was no response to N or K only (13.4 Mg?ha?1) compared to no fertilizer (12.4 Mg?ha?1). Switchgrass receiving both N and K (14.6 Mg?ha?1) produced 18 % greater dry matter (DM) yield compared to no fertilizer check. Under the two-cut harvest system, N only (16.0 Mg?ha?1) or K only (14.1 Mg?ha?1) fertilizer produced similar DM to no fertilizer (15.1 Mg?ha?1). Switchgrass receiving both N and K in the two-cut system (19.2 Mg?ha?1) produced the greatest (P?<?0.05) DM yield, which was 32 % greater than switchgrass receiving both N and K in the one-cut system. Nutrient removal (biomass?×?nutrient concentration) was greatest in plots receiving both N and K, and the two-cut system had greater nutrient removal than the one-cut system. Based on these results, harvesting only once during winter months reduces nutrient removal in harvested biomass and requires less inorganic fertilizer for sustained yields from year to year compared to two-cut system.  相似文献
