Exposure to a period of microgravity or bed rest produces several physiological adaptations. These changes, which include an increased incidence of orthostatic intolerance, have an impact when people return to a 1G environment or resume an upright posture. Compared with males, females appear more susceptible to orthostatic intolerance after exposure to real or simulated microgravity. Decreased arterial baroreflex compensation may contribute to orthostatic intolerance. We hypothesized that female rats would exhibit a greater reduction in arterial baroreflex function after hindlimb unloading (HU) compared with male rats. Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) were recorded in conscious animals after 13-15 days of HU. Baseline HR was elevated in female rats, and HU increased HR in both genders. Consistent with previous results in males, baroreflex-mediated activation of RSNA was blunted by HU in both genders. Maximum RSNA in response to decreases in MAP was reduced by HU (male control 513 +/- 42%, n = 11; male HU 346 +/- 38%, n = 13; female control 359 +/- 44%, n = 10; female HU 260 +/- 43%, n = 10). Maximum baroreflex increase in RSNA was lower in females compared with males in both control and HU rats. Both female gender and HU attenuated baroreflex-mediated increases in sympathetic activity. The combined effects of HU and gender resulted in reduced baroreflex sympathetic reserve in females compared with males and could contribute to the greater incidence of orthostatic intolerance in females after exposure to spaceflight or bed rest.  相似文献

Background

Previous studies have suggested that women do not accrue equal therapeutic benefit from antiplatelet medication as compared with men. The physiological mechanism and clinical implications behind this gender disparity have yet to be established.

Methods

On-treatment platelet reactivity was determined in 717 men and 234 women on dual antiplatelet therapy, undergoing elective coronary stent implantation. Platelet function testing was performed using arachidonic acid and adenosine diphosphate-induced light transmittance aggregometry (LTA) and the VerifyNow P2Y12 and Aspirin assays. Also the incidence of all-cause death, non-fatal acute myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis and ischaemic stroke was evaluated.

Results

Women had higher baseline platelet counts than men. Women exhibited a higher magnitude of on-aspirin platelet reactivity using LTA, but not using the VerifyNow Aspirin assay. The magnitude of on-clopidogrel platelet reactivity was significantly higher in women as compared with men with both tests used. The cut-off value to identify patients at risk as well as the incidence of clinical endpoints was similar between women and men (16/234[6.8%] vs. 62/717[8.6%], p = 0.38).

Conclusion

Although the magnitude of platelet reactivity was higher in women, the absolute difference between genders was small and both the cut-off value to identify patients at risk and the incidence of the composite endpoint were similar between genders. Thus, it is unlikely that the difference in platelet reactivity accounts for a worse prognosis in women.  相似文献

Single unit responses in nuclei of the vestibular complex to stimulation of the labyrinths and of proprioceptive and autonomic afferents were investigated. Different types of unit responses were obtained to stimulation, including evoked activity consisting of a group of action potentials followed by inhibition of the spike discharge. Unit activity in the vestibular nuclei was shown to depend on extralabyrinthine stimulation. In response to adequate stimulation of the labyrinths by tilting the head, the role of receptors of muscles and joints in the neck was distinguished. The purpose of this study was to test the general hypothesis that sympathoinhibitory cardiopulmonary baroreflexes modulate sympathetic outflow during voluntary exercise in humans. Direct (microneurographic) measurements of postganglionic sympathetic nerve activity to noncontracting muscle (MSNA) were made from the right peroneal nerve in the leg, and arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded in 10 healthy subjects before (control) and for 2.5 min during each of five interventions: 1) lower-body negative pressure at -10 mmHg (LBNP) alone, 2 and 3) isometric handgrip exercise at 15 and 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) alone, and 4 and 5) handgrip at 15 and 30% MVC performed during LBNP. During LBNP alone, which should have reduced cardiopulmonary baroreflex sympathoinhibition, AP and HR did not change from control, but MSNA increased 93 +/- 24% (P less than 0.05). Handgrip elicited contraction intensity-dependent increases in AP and HR (P less than 0.05), but MSNA increased above control only at the 30% MVC level (165 +/- 30%, P less than 0.05). The HR, AP, and MSNA responses to either level of handgrip performed during LBNP were not different from the algebraic sums of the corresponding responses to handgrip and LBNP performed separately (P greater than 0.05). Since there was no facilitation of the MSNA response to handgrip when performed during LBNP compared with algebraic sums of the separate responses, our results do not support the hypothesis that cardiopulmonary baroreflexes modulate (inhibit) sympathetic outflow during exercise in humans.  相似文献

This study evaluated blood pressure and heart rate responses to exercise and nonexercise tasks as indexes of autonomic function in subjects with and without Down syndrome (DS). Twenty-four subjects (12 with and 12 without DS) completed maximal treadmill exercise, isometric handgrip (30% of maximum), and cold pressor tests, with heart rate and blood pressure measurements. Maximal heart rate and heart rate and blood pressure responses to the isometric handgrip and cold pressor tests were reduced in subjects with DS (P < 0.05). Both early (first 30 s) and late (last 30 s) responses were reduced. Obesity did not appear to influence the results, as both obese and normal-weight subjects with DS exhibited similar responses, and controlling for body mass index did not alter the results between controls and subjects with DS. Individuals with DS, without congenital heart disease, exhibit reduced heart rate and blood pressure responses to isometric handgrip exercise and cold pressor testing, consistent with autonomic dysfunction. Autonomic dysfunction may partially explain chronotropic incompetence observed during maximal treadmill exercise in individuals with DS.  相似文献

It is well known that body composition can influence peripheral heat loss and skin temperature. That the distribution of body fat is affected by gender is well known; however, there is little information on how body composition and gender influences the measure of skin temperature. This study evaluated skin temperature distribution according to body fat percentage (BF%) and gender. A sample of 94 apparently healthy volunteers (47 women and 47 men) was assessed with Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and infrared thermography (mean, maximum and minimum temperatures – TMean, TMax and TMin). The sample was divided into groups, according to health risk classification, based on BF%, as proposed by the American College of Sports Medicine: Average (n = 58), Elevated (n = 16) or High (n = 20). Women had lower TMean in most regions of interest (ROI). In both genders, group High had lower temperature values than Average and Elevated in the trunk, upper and lower limbs. In men, palms and posterior hands had a tendency (p < 0.05) for increased temperature along with increased BF%. TMean, TMax and TMin of trunk, upper and lower limbs were negatively correlated with BF% and the fat percentage of each segment (upper limbs, lower limbs and trunk). The highest correlations found in women were between posterior trunk and BF% (rho = −0.564, p < 0.001) and, in men, between anterior trunk and BF% (rho = −0.760, p < 0.001). Overall, this study found that women have lower skin temperature than men, which was related with higher BF%. Facial temperature seems not to be influenced by body fat. With the future collection of data on the relationship between BF% and skin temperature while taking into account factors such as body morphology, gender, and ethnicity, we conclude that measurement of BF may be reliably estimated with the use of thermal imaging technology.  相似文献

Insulin excess exacerbates hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). This study examined the relative contribution of the renin-angiotensin system and the sympathetic nervous system in this phenomenon. In SHR, daily subcutaneous injections of insulin were initiated either before short-term angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition with captopril or after lifetime captopril treatment. Insulin treatment resulted in significant increases in mean arterial pressure and heart rate and captopril treatment lowered arterial pressure, but captopril did not lower arterial pressure more in the insulin-treated compared with control rats. To test the contribution of the sympathetic nervous system to this form of hypertension, each rat was intravenously infused with either a ganglionic blocker (i.e., hexamethonium) or a centrally acting alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonist (i.e., clonidine). Administration of either agent largely eliminated the differences in mean arterial pressure and heart rate between the insulin-treated and saline-treated SHR, irrespective of captopril treatment. These data indicate that in SHR, the ability of insulin to increase blood pressure is closely related to sympathoexcitation, which is unresponsive to blockade of angiotensin-converting enzyme.  相似文献

Effect of timing of artificial insemination on gender ratio in beef cattle   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
It was recently reported that cows inseminated at approximately 10 or 20 h before an expected ovulation deliver predominately a bull or heifer calf, respectively. The objective of this study was to further investigate the effect of timing of insemination on the gender of offspring in cattle. Angus heifers (n = 41) and cows (n = 98) were used in the study. Heifers were synchronized with a 16-d treatment of melengestrol acetate followed 17 d later with an injection of PGF2alpha. Cows were synchronized with GnRH followed 7 d later with PGF2alpha. A HeatWatch electronic estrus detection system was used to determine the onset of estrus. Based on previous studies, it was assumed that ovulation occurs approximately 32 h after the onset of estrus. Therefore, animals were artificially inseminated at either 8 to 10 h (early; > or = 20 h before expected ovulation) or 20 to 25 h (late; < or = 10 h before expected ovulation) after the onset of estrus. Sixty to 80 d after insemination, ultrasonography was used to confirm pregnancy status and to determine the gender of fetuses. Gender of calves was subsequently confirmed at calving. Data were analyzed for effects of time of insemination and sire or semen batch on gender ratio, as well as any effect of length and/or intensity of estrus on conception rate and gender ratio. Twenty-nine of 41 heifers and 69 of 98 cows were detected in estrus after synchronization and were inseminated; 20 of 29 heifers and 48 of 69 cows were subsequently confirmed pregnant. Neither the length of estrus nor its intensity (number of mounts) had an effect on pregnancy rate or gender ratio (P > or = 0.418). Timing of insemination (early versus late) had no effect on gender ratio (P = 0.887). Semen from 13 sires representing 17 lots was used to inseminate the cows and heifers. No differences (P = 0.494) were detected in the gender ratios resulting from different sires or semen batches. In contrast to previous findings, our results indicate that inseminating beef cattle at approximately 20 or 10 h before an expected ovulation does not alter the gender ratio of the resultant calves.  相似文献

The effects of gender difference and voluntary exercise on antioxidant capacity in rats were evaluated. The subjects were divided into two groups, physically active and sedentary. In the sedentary group, the level of hydroxyl radical in the liver was higher (P<0.001) in male rats than in female rats, however, in the physically active group, the level in male rats was lower (P<0.05) than in female rats. The levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) in physically active males and females were higher compared to those in the sedentary group. The physically active group also showed an increase in antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and superoxide dismutase activities. The level of liver GSH was higher in physically active females than in physically active males. For both groups, GPx and GR activities in females were significantly higher than in males. These results indicate that female rats have an intrinsically higher antioxidant capacity, which resulted in increased levels of GSH via the glutathione redox cycle and gamma-glutamyl cycle enzymes. The adaptation to altered antioxidant capacity, induced by physical activity, appeared to be affected by gender differences.  相似文献
