The majority of estuaries along the coastline of southern Africa are termed temporarily open/closed estuaries (TOCEs) and are closed off from the sea for varying periods by a sandbar which forms at the mouth. It is therefore important to understand the processes occurring within TOCEs and their importance to fishes in order to make sound management recommendations. Estuaries along the coast of South Africa and their associated fish assemblages are biogeographically distinct and occur in either a subtropical, warm-temperate or cool-temperate zone. There are 125 TOCEs found within the cool-temperate and warm-temperate zones. Most fish species found in TOCEs are the juveniles of marine taxa that breed at sea. Permanently open estuaries generally have a higher diversity of species than TOCEs, but TOCEs still provide important nursery areas for many marine species and numerically often have a higher proportion of estuarine resident species. Important taxa in terms of abundance and biomass in warm-temperate TOCEs include the sparids Rhabdosargus holubi and Lithognathus lithognathus, several mugilid species, estuarine residents (particularly Gilchristella aestuaria and Atherina breviceps) and the freshwater cichlid Oreochromis mossambicus. The diversity of fishes in cool-temperate TOCEs is low when compared with warm-temperate systems and Liza richardsonii tends to dominate catches by number and mass in most systems. Several species recorded in TOCEs show clear longitudinal distribution trends. For example Atherina breviceps is generally more abundant in the lower reaches of estuaries. Mouth state, particularly the frequency, timing and duration of mouth opening plays a key role in determining species richness, composition, diversity and abundance in TOCEs. Mouth state is directly linked to freshwater input. Reduced river inflow leads to prolonged mouth closure and shorter open phases, which inhibits immigration and emigration of marine fish species between estuaries and the sea. Understanding of the effects of various processes occurring within these systems, particularly variation in freshwater input, on the biota of these important systems facilitates the development of informed management recommendations.  相似文献

Recent ostracod assemblages were investigated from coretop sediment samples collected in the eastern Kara Sea from water depths down to 300 m. A total of 45 species were identified, 27 of them were reported for the Kara Sea for the first time. The Kara Sea data were compared with our results on the distribution of ostracods in the eastern Laptev Sea. The spatial distribution of recent taxa and the ecological groupings demonstrate a clear relation to dominant environmental factors which range from estuarine to full-marine conditions. Four assemblages related to average summer bottom water salinities were established: (1) a freshwater assemblage from the inner estuaries of the Ob' and Yenisei rivers with salinities less than 2 and from thermokarst lagoons of the southern Laptev Sea coast with strong salinization in winter; (2) a brackishwater assemblage of the outer estuaries of the Ob' and Yenisei rivers with salinities up to 26; (3) a mixed euryhaline–marine assemblage dominated by euryhaline species Paracyprideis pseudopunctillata and Heterocyprideis sorbyana from the inner shelf river-affected zone of the Kara and Laptev seas, where salinities range between 26 and 32; (4) a taxonomically diverse marine assemblage dominated by shallow-water marine taxa from the northern parts of the Kara and Laptev shelves and upper continental slope with stable bottom environments and a salinity higher than 32. Abundant euryhaline species found at greater water depths are identified as part of an ice-rafted assemblage. They are possibly entrained into the newly formed fast ice during autumn storms and freeze-up period and then transported to the distal open-sea areas during summer.  相似文献

Variation in the life cycle of diadromous fishes can be explained by differential food availability between marine and freshwater habitats, since migration is often interpreted as a mechanism for exploiting food resources. Theoretically, a migration pattern of mainly remaining in freshwater occurs in tropical and subtropical habitats where fluvial productivity possibly exceeds marine productivity. However, in Yakugachi River, Amami-Oshima Island, southern Japan, low nutrient concentrations in the river suggest that food availability is limited for the subtropical Ryukyu-ayu Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis. Since Ryukyu-ayu is an amphidromous fish that mainly grows in rivers after spending 2 months in the sea, limited food availability in rivers would force this species to migrate to other habitats with better food availability. Otolith increment and Sr:Ca analyses of 48 adult Ryukyu-ayu collected from the Yakugachi River revealed that all individuals visited estuaries more than three times after moving upstream. Although the specific growth rates of this species in the river had no correlation with the salinity profile in the fluvial period, this movement may be an adaptive choice because the salinity profile significantly affected the body size at maturity. Our results highlighted individual-based variations in amphidromous migration for utilizing estuaries, which could be explained by relatively higher productivity in estuarine than in freshwater and marine habitats.  相似文献

Kelp beds are thought to provide a refuge for a variety of marine organisms by damping waves, changing hydrodynamic flow, offering substrata for epiphytic species, and altering the abundances of predators and prey. At the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands, a typical flow-through system, kelp beds have the potential of acting as a prime habitat for a variety of pelagic species that would otherwise be swept away and lost from the island ecosystem. The current study investigates the effects of kelp beds on the abundance and composition of zooplankton and microphytoplankton, with the main aim of determining whether kelp beds act as a repository for larval stages in general, and for the swimming prawn, Nauticaris marionis, in particular. Salinity gradients created by freshwater run-off indicated that kelp beds at Marion Island retain surface water and restrict water exchange with the open ocean. Both the abundance and diversity of zooplankton were greatest within the kelp beds. This was partially due to the high abundance of kelp-associated species, but also to the apparent retention of naupliar larvae within the kelp canopy. Unlike the larvae of ostracods and copepods, caridean zoeae were rare, indicating that kelp beds are not a prime habitat for larvae of N. marionis. The larval retention mechanism for this species, therefore, remains unknown. Apart from retaining water and certain species of zooplankton, chlorophyll a/phaeopigment ratios confirmed the existence of a substantial detrital pool within the kelp beds. This retention of detritus may explain the observed importance of kelp-derived matter in the diet of many nearshore animals. In contrast to the zooplankton, kelp beds seemed to have little effect on the abundance and composition of microphytoplankton, and chlorophyll a values were low at all stations.  相似文献

Zonation of intertidal macrobenthos in the estuaries of Schelde and Ems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Based on data, collected in 1980–1990, the intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde and Ems estuaries was compared. The spatial occurrence of the benthic macrofauna along the salinity gradient, including the freshwater tidal area was emphasized. Both estuaries appeared to have a very similar species composition, especially at genus level. The higher number of species observed in the Schelde estuary was probably due to a greater habitat diversity. In both estuaries species diversity decreased with distance upstream. The total density did not vary along the estuarine gradient, whereas biomass is highest in the polyhaline zone.In both estuaries distinct intertidal benthic communities were observed along the salinity gradient: a marine community in the polyhaline zone, a brackish community in the mesohaline zone, and a third community in the oligohaline and freshwater tidal zones of the estuary. These three communities were very similar between both estuaries. Their main characteristics were discussed together with the occurrence and distribution of the dominant species. For the Schelde estuary and to a lesser extent also for the Ems estuary, there was evidence that anthropogenic stress had a negative effect on the intertidal macrobenthic communities of the oligohaline/freshwater tidal zone. Only Oligochaeta were dominating, whereas the very euryhaline and/or true limnetic species were missing. In the mesohaline zone, the Schelde estuary was dominated by large numbers of short-living, opportunistic species, whereas in the Ems estuary relatively more stable macrobenthic communities were observed. A comparison with some other European estuaries showed in general similar trends as those observed for the Schelde and Ems estuaries.  相似文献

The freshwater fish assemblage in most estuaries is not as species rich as the marine assemblage in the same systems. Coupled with this differential richness is an apparent inability by most freshwater fish species to penetrate estuarine zones that are mesohaline (salinity: 5·0–17·9), polyhaline (salinity: 18·0–29·9) or euhaline (salinity: 30·0–39·9). The reason why mesohaline waters are avoided by most freshwater fishes is difficult to explain from a physiological perspective as many of these species would be isosmotic within this salinity range. Perhaps, a key to the poor penetration of estuarine waters by freshwater taxa is an inability to develop chloride cells in gill filament epithelia, as well as a lack of other osmoregulatory adaptations present in euryhaline fishes. Only a few freshwater fish species, especially some of those belonging to the family Cichlidae, have become fully euryhaline and have successfully occupied a wide range of estuaries, sometimes even dominating in hyperhaline systems (salinity 40+). Indeed, this review found that there are few fish species that can be termed holohaline (i.e. capable of occupying waters with a salinity range of 0–100+) and, of these taxa, there is a disproportionally high number of freshwater species (e.g. Cyprinodon variegatus, Oreochromis mossambicus and Sarotherodon melanotheron). Factors such as increased competition for food and higher predation rates by piscivorous fishes and birds may also play an important role in the low species richness and abundance of freshwater taxa in estuaries. Added to this is the relatively low species richness of freshwater fishes in river catchments when compared with the normally higher diversity of marine fish species for potential estuarine colonization from the adjacent coastal waters. The almost complete absence of freshwater fish larvae from the estuarine ichthyoplankton further reinforces the poor representation of this guild within these systems. An explanation as to why more freshwater fish species have not become euryhaline and occupied a wide range of estuaries similar to their marine counterparts is probably due to a combination of the above described factors, with physiological restrictions pertaining to limited salinity tolerances probably playing the most important role.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of fish estuary association guilds was undertaken on some 190 South African estuaries. This pioneering study spanned three zoogeographic regions and included three broad estuarine types. The guild compositions of the estuaries were compared based on an importance value, incorporating taxonomic composition, numerical abundance and relative biomass. Multivariate analyses included both inter‐regional (zoogeographic) and intra‐regional (estuarine typology) comparisons. The major estuary‐associated guilds (estuarine species and marine migrant species) were important in all estuary types within all biogeographic regions. Significant differences both between regions and between estuary types within regions, however, were recorded. Cool–temperate estuaries were generally dominated by migratory species (estuarine migrants and marine migrant opportunists) while the importance of species dependent on estuaries (estuarine residents and estuarine‐dependent marine migrants) was higher in warm–temperate and subtropical regions. The significance of estuarine nursery areas, particularly in regions where estuaries are few in number, is highlighted. In terms of typology, migratory species assumed a greater importance in predominantly open systems, while freshwater and estuarine‐resident species were more important in predominantly closed systems. Predominantly closed estuaries, however, were also important for marine migrant species, which further highlights the significance of these systems as nursery areas for fishes.  相似文献

The diet of the South Georgia shag Phalacrocorax georgianus at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands, was studied by the analysis of 420 pellets (regurgitated casts) collected from the 1995 to 1999 breeding seasons. Demersal-benthic fish were by far the main prey, followed by molluscs (mainly octopods and bivalves) and polychaetes. Harpagifer antarcticus (in 1995, 1998, 1999) and Lepidonotothen nudifrons (1996, 1997) were the most frequent prey, followed by Gobionotothen gibberifrons or Trematomus newnesi. Harpagifer antarcticus, followed by L. nudifrons or T. newnesi, was the most numerous prey in all of the seasons and predominated in mass in 1995 and 1996, followed by Notothenia coriiceps and L. nudifrons. In 1997 and 1999, G. gibberifrons and N. coriiceps were the species that most contributed to the diet whereas N. coriiceps and H. antarcticus contributed most in 1998. Our results differ from those reported for the South Orkney Islands in previous studies. These differences could be due to the use of different diet-analysis methods and to shags-related and/or fisheries-related changes in the food availability around the colonies. These alternative explanations are analysed and discussed.  相似文献

Zooplankton was collected during the drift on the USA-Russia Ice Station Weddell 1 in the western Weddell Sea. Stratified tows up to 1,000 m depths were performed under perennial ice at a distance of ca. 300 km from the marginal ice zone from March to May 1992. Seasonal abundance, developmental stage composition and vertical distribution in populations of large dominant calanoid copepod species were studied. The abundance of Calanoides acutus changed inconspicuously and averaged 1,260 ind. m-2; its developmental stage composition was characterised by the dominance of copepodites V (CV) and hardly changed in the course of observations. Calanus propinquus was at most stations in fairly low abundance and was represented by CV and adults; at the latest stations, it was not found. Rhincalanus gigas was also scarce; III-IV stages were present, but the first of them only at the southernmost stations. In contrast to this species, in the relatively abundant population of Metridia gerlachei (1,370 ind. m-2 on average), a new generation was observed. There was a clear deepening of the median depth of occurrence of the above three species from March to early May, while in late May a shifting to upper layers was observed which remained unexplained. The data obtained were compared to the data collected in the ice-open eastern part of the Weddell Sea in the corresponding season. It can be seen that the differences in populations dynamics of the four species under the perennial ice depends on their trophic mode, i.e. capability to store lipid reserves in summer and/or to feed in winter, and with food spectra.  相似文献

Summary

This study aimed to determine the distribution and relative abundance of freshwater fish in the Addo Elephant National Park. A total of 1578 fish specimens of 12 species were collected during surveys carried out in the Sundays River and four tributaries during 1996 and 1997. The redfin minnow Pseudobarbus afer comprised 81.6% of the total catch. Length frequency analysis of P. afer populations indicated recent successful recruitment in several rivers. Differences between rivers in the concentrations of dissolved and suspended solids and pH are possible reasons for different species complements. These surveys show the distribution of P. afer and Barbus aeneus in the Eastern Cape Province to be wider than previously reported. Management action is required to minimise opportunities for further establishment and spread of alien and translocated fish species and to conserve indigenous fish assemblages within the Park.  相似文献

It is hypothesized that fish larvae undertake vertical movements in estuarine waters. To test this hypothesis, a sampling period was selected during times when many spring‐spawning fish reach maximum abundance in coastal waters so that spring and summer variations in larval fish assemblages could be determined in the Yangtze River estuary. Six oceanographic surveys were conducted across the salinity gradient of an inshore (freshwater) and offshore area (brackish intersection) during spring (May) and summer (August) between 2010 and 2012. The fish larval community was dominated by species of Engraulidae, Gobiidae, Champsodontidae and Mugilidae. The pre‐flexion and flexion larval stages of euryhaline marine species, which are dependent on estuaries as nursery areas, were common. The brackish and marine larval assemblage was the most abundant with taxa such as Coilia mystus and Engraulis japonicus accounting for more than 57.3% of the total catch. Spatial differences in the taxonomic composition of larval fish assemblages were evident between the inshore and offshore areas. Additionally, the Yangtze River runoff regulatory functions as affected by the Three Gorges Reservoir operational mode (hydrological alternating operations) showed weak influences on fish and habitat environments. Low salinities from high freshwater inflow limited bay anchovy production in the inshore area.  相似文献

The role of microhabitat in structuring epifaunal communities on four corals of varying morphology in the genus Acropora (A. millepora, A. hyacinthus, A. pulchra, A. formosa) was determined on two fringing reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef. Greater abundance and species richness of epifauna on tightly branched coral species in comparison to their rarity or absence on open-branched species suggests that protection afforded by complex habitats is important in structuring coral epifaunal communities. Within species, neither total colony space nor live surface area of corals was correlated with either the abundance or species richness of associated epifauna. However, space between branches significantly affected the size of Tetralia crabs associated with different coral species. Patterns in the size distribution of Tetralia on two species of Acropora suggest that crabs select coral hosts according to branch spacing, changing host species as they grow larger.  相似文献

Amphipods from the central and northern areas of the Barents Sea were studied by a series of MOCNESS profiles between 1990 and 1997. Themisto abyssorum, though dominant in warmer Atlantic water, was also present in Arctic water. In contrast, T. libellula was a typical Arctic species and penetrated very little into the Atlantic water masses. T. compressa was seldom found in the studied area. Linear regression analysis showed a statistically significant negative relationship between abundance of T. libellula and the variability in the Atlantic inflow. The abundance of this species seems to be, to a large extent, determined by the amount of Arctic water in the Barents Sea. The sub-Arctic species, T. abyssorum, only has a 1-year life-cycle, with the peak in release of young (2-3 mm) occurring in May and June. A few individuals may survive to be older. The Arctic species, T. libellula, seems to release the young earlier and the length-frequency distributions seem to indicate a 2-year life-span. The spring phytoplankton, which usually blooms during April in the Barents Sea, followed by high abundance of Calanus spp. and krill species, are regarded as important factors that influence the release of the amphipods' young.  相似文献

The intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands and Belgium) was sampled in late autumn of 1990 at 50 stations along the whole salinity gradient (between Vlissingen and Dendermonde), including the freshwater tidal part. All stations were situated in sheltered areas with a relatively muddy sediment. Species richness, diversity and total biomass of the benthic macrofauna decreased along the salinity gradient from Vlissingen to Dendermonde, while total density showed no clear trend. Especially the oligohaline and freshwater tidal part of the Schelde estuary was characterized by a very impoverished benthic community, composed only of Oligochaeta. No other species (freshwater, marine or brackish) was observed in this part of the estuary. The marine part had a more diverse macrozoobenthos structure than that of the brackish part. Species found only in the marine zone areCerastoderma edule, Tharyx marioni, Eteone longa, Nephtys hombergii andCapitella capitata. In the brackish part of the estuary,Corophium volutator was a typical, dominant species. However, a lot of the dominant species were common in both the marine and brackish part of the Schelde estuary (e.g. Heteromastus filiformis, Pygospio elegans, Nereis diversicolor, Macoma balthica). The observed gradient in species composition and dominance is compared with some other European estuaries. The marine and brackish part of the Schelde estuary is quite similar to other european estuaries. The freshwater tidal part, however, was more impoverished.  相似文献

In southern Brazil, cold ( La Niña ) and warm ( El Niño ) episodes of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon cause drought and high rainfall, respectively. The low precipitation and freshwater outflow associated with La Niña during 1995–1996 were associated with an increase in the abundance of marine species in the Patos Lagoon estuary. During the 1997–1998 El Niño , high precipitation and river discharge were associated with low abundance of marine species in the estuary. ANOVA results showed a higher abundance during La Niña than El Niño for estuarine resident (RES) and estuarine dependent (DEP) fishes. During La Niña catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of RES increased from the marine to estuarine area, but during El Niño CPUE increased at the marine area and diminished during summer and autumn in some estuarine sites. DEP fishes had an opposite abundance pattern. During La Niña , these fishes were abundant at the coastal marine area and along some estuarine sites, but during El Niño , CPUE remained almost the same at the marine area but dropped along some estuarine sites. These different abundance patterns for dominant fish groups yielded a positive interaction between stations and climatic events. With higher river discharge and the consequent decline of dominant euryhaline fishes, such as Mugil platanus and Atherinella brasiliensis , freshwater species increased in abundance and richness in the shallow waters of the stuary. The ENSO phenomenon influences precipitation and estuarine salinity in southern Brazil and thereby seems to have a strong influence on recruitment, immigration, and emigration dynamics of fish species living within and adjacent to estuarine habitats.  相似文献

Bacterial biomass and functional diversity in four marine and four freshwater samples, collected from Resolute Bay, Nunavut, Canada, were studied using fluorescent nucleic-acid staining and sole-carbon-source utilization. Viable microbial counts using the LIVE/DEAD BacLight Viability Kit estimated viable marine bacterial numbers from 0.7 to 1.8᎒6 cells/l, which were lower than viable bacterial numbers in freshwater samples (2.1-9.9᎒6 cells/l) (RCBD-ANOVA). Calculations of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and average well colour development were based on substrate utilization in ECO-Biolog plates incubated at 4°C and 20°C for 38 and 24 days, respectively. The Shannon-Wiener diversity of the marine water samples was significantly greater ( x H'=2.40ǂ.08, P <0.005; RCBD-ANOVA) than that of freshwater samples ( x H'=1.20ǂ.00, P <0.005; RCBD-ANOVA). Differences in microbial diversity between fresh and marine water samples at 4°C ( x 4°C =2.01) and 20°C (x20°C =2.31) were also detected by RCBD-ANOVA analysis. Interactions between water type and incubation temperature were not significant ( F =1.926, F c=5.12). Principal component analysis revealed differences in metabolic substrate utilization patterns and, consequently, the microbial diversity between water types and samples.  相似文献

Synopsis Sampling in six estuaries of the east coast of James and Hudson Bays between 1973 and 1977 has revealed latitudinal differences in the composition of fish communities. Arctic and subarctic marine species are more prominent in estuaries of Hudson Bay. Fewer species are found northwards with 35 species in lower rivers and estuaries of James Bay and only 24 in those of Hudson Bay, for a total of 38 species. Climate, postglacial dispersion and restricted space are proposed as causes of the observed distribution of fishes. Send reprint request to this address  相似文献

Mesozooplankton samples were collected over a period of one year in five stations of the Ebrié lagoon and analysed for organic, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus contents. When zooplankton was dominated by A. clausi, body composition was relatively stable compared with the broad variability of environmental factors (mainly salinity, food abundance and composition), although a negative hypothetic influence of salinity may have occurred. Body composition was comparable when zooplankton was dominated by Pseudodiaptomus hessei and freshwater species, but contents were significantly lower for assemblages dominated by more exclusively marine species (Paracalanus spp., Oithona spp., marine cladocerans, chaetognates, etc.).  相似文献
