Plants have many well-documented influences in treatment wetlands, but differences in individual species’ effects on year-round and seasonal performance are poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated plant effects on seasonal patterns of organic carbon removal (measured as COD) and sulfate concentration (used as an indicator of rootzone oxidation) in replicated, batch-loaded, greenhouse microcosms simulating subsurface treatment wetlands. Microcosms were planted with monocultures of 19 plant species or left unplanted as controls, dosed every 20 days with synthetic secondary wastewater, and operated over 20 months at temperatures from 4 to 24 °C. Study-long COD removal averaged 70% for controls and 70-97% for individual species. Most species enhanced COD removal significantly and the benefits of plants were greatest at 4-8 °C because COD removal decreased at low temperatures in controls but displayed limited seasonal variation in planted microcosms. Removal was significantly better at 24 °C than 4 °C with two species (Panicum virgatum and Leymus cinereus), significantly poorer with two species (Carex utriculata and Phalaris arundinacea), and did not differ with 15 species. Only one species showed a significant positive correlation between temperature and COD removal (Iris missouriensis, r = 0.67), while two species showed significant negative correlations (better when colder: Carex nebrascensis, r = −0.67; C. utriculata, r = −0.93). High COD removal throughout the study was strongly associated with high SO4 concentrations at low temperatures, suggesting that plant performance is related to rootzone oxidation and species’ abilities to promote aerobic over anaerobic microbial processes, particularly in winter. Results indicate that improved year-round and cold-season COD removal is common across diverse wetland plant species and novel species can be as good or better than those typically used. Better performing species were largely in the sedge and rush families (Cyperaceae and Juncaceae), while poorer performing species were largely in the grass family (Poaceae).  相似文献

The performance of a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) has been investigated for abattoir wastewater (AW) treatment. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of permeate has not exceeded 25 mg L−1 providing an average COD removal of 98%. Microbiological analysis showed that the SMBR has allowed a complete removal of fecal coliforms, Listeria and Salmonella. A significant reduction in the excess biomass production was also observed. In fact, the yield of biomass production (Yobs) ranged between 0 and 0.106 g suspended solids/g COD removed. The study of the dynamic of bacterial communities using the single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) method showed a significant change in the population structure and revealed a correlation between the sludge production yield and the bacterial communities.  相似文献

Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of 16S rRNA genes was used to investigate the reproducibility and stability in the bacterial community structure of laboratory-scale sequencing batch bioreactors (SBR) and to assess the impact of solids retention time (SRT) on bacterial diversity. Two experiments were performed. In each experiment two sets of replicate SBRs were operated for a periods of three times the SRT. One set was operated at an SRT of 2 days and another set was operated at an SRT of 8 days. Samples for T-RFLP analysis were collected from the two sets of replicate reactors. HhaI, MspI, and RsaI T-RFLP profiles were analyzed using cluster analysis and diversity statistics. Cluster analysis with Ward's method using Jaccard distance and Hellinger distance showed that the bacterial community structure in both sets of reactors from both experimental runs was dynamic and that replicate reactors were clustered together and evolved similarly from startup. Richness (S), evenness (E), the Shannon-Weaver index (H), and the reciprocal of Simpson's index (1/D) were calculated, and the values were compared between the two sets of reactors. Evenness values were higher for reactors operated at an SRT of 2 days. Statistically significant differences in diversity (H and D) between the two sets of reactors were tested using a randomization procedure, and the results showed that reactors from both experimental runs that were operated at an SRT of 2 days had higher diversity (H and D) at the 5% level. T-RFLP analysis with diversity indices proved to be a powerful tool to analyze changes in the bacterial community diversity in response to changes in the operational parameters of activated-sludge systems.  相似文献

Solid retention time (SRT) is a very important operational variable in continuous and semicontinuous waste treatment processes since the organic matter removal efficiency - expressed in terms of percentage of Dissolved Organic Carbon (% DOC) or Volatile Solids (% VS) removed - and the biogas or methane production are closely related with the SRT imposed. Optimum SRT is depending on the waste characteristics and the microorganisms involved in the process and, hence, it should be determined specifically in each case.In this work a series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of SRT, from 40 to 8 days, on the performance of the dry (30% Total Solids) thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic digestion of organic fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes (OFMSW) operating at semicontinuous regime of feeding. The experimental results show than 15 days is the optimum SRT (the best between all proved) for this process. Besides, data of organic matter concentration and methane production versus SRT have been used to obtain the kinetic parameters of the kinetic model of Romero García (1991): the maximum specific growth rate of the microorganisms (μmax = 0.580 days−1) and the fraction of substrate non-biodegradable (α = 0.268).  相似文献

This study evaluated three different textile materials (Acrylate, Polyester, and Nylon) as filter media for MBR treating municipal wastewater. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading rates were 1.71, 1.65 and 1.84 g/l d while feed/microorganisms (F/M) ratios were 0.32, 0.31 and 0.33 in Reactor 1, Reactor 2 and Reactor 3, respectively. The actual hydraulic retention times were 8.6, 8.9 and 8.0 h in R1, R2 and R3. At 5.3-5.5 g/l mixed liquor suspended (MLSS) and 26.3 days solid retention time (SRT) the membrane bioreactors were effective in removing 93-95% of COD, 99% of total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity, 89-94% of total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and 90-96% of total ammonia nitrogen. Phosphorous removal was limited to 51-55% while faecal coliform was reduced by four logs. Quality of the treated effluents met both Saudi and Egyptian reuse standards for restricted irrigation and could be easily disinfected to meet the unrestricted irrigation standards.  相似文献

A bioreactor cascade with a submerged biofilm is proposed to treat young landfill leachate of jbel chakir landfill site south west from capital Tunis, Tunisia. The prototype was run under different organic loading charges varying from 0.6 to 16.3 kg TOC m−3 day−1. Without initial pH adjustment total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate varied between 65% and 97%. The total reduction of COD reached 92% at a hydraulic retention time of 36 h. However, the removal of total kjeldahl nitrogen for loading charges of 0.5 kg N m−3 day−1 reached 75%. The adjustment of pH to 7.5 improved nitrogen removal to a rate of 85% for loading charge of 1 kg N m−3 day−1. The main bacterial groups responsible for a simultaneous removal of organic carbon and nitrogen belonged to Bacillus, Actinomyces, Pseudomonas and Burkholderia genera. These selected isolates showed a great capacity of degradation at different leachate concentrations of total organic carbon.  相似文献

A static granular bed reactor (SGBR) was used to treat swine wastewater at 24 and 16 °C. At 24 °C, the organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.7-5.4 kg COD/m3 day and the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 88.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, at 16 °C, the OLR was 1.6-4.0 kg COD/m3 day and the average COD removal efficiency was 68.0%, respectively. The SGBR acted as a bioreactor as well as a biofilter. After backwashing, the recovery of COD removal was not a function of an OLR but recovery time, while that of TSS removal was not a function of either recovery time or the OLR. The maximum substrate utilization rate (kmax) ratio was 1.89 between 24 and 16 °C, and the half velocity constant (Ks) ratio was 1.22, and the maximum specific growth rate (μmax) ratio was 4.71. In addition, the temperature-activity coefficient in this study was determined to be 1.09.  相似文献

An anaerobic baffled reactor with four compartments (C1-C4) was successfully used for treatment of acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation wastewater and methane production. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was 88.2% with a CH4 yield of 0.25 L/(g CODremoved) when organic loading rate (OLR) was 5.4 kg COD m−3 d−1. C1 played the most important role in solvents (acetone, butanol and ethanol) and COD removal. Community structure of C2 was similar to that in C1 at stage 3 with higher OLR, but was similar to those in C3 and C4 at stages 1-2 with lower OLR. This community variation in C2 was consistent with its increased role in COD and solvent removal at stage 3. During community succession from C1 to C4 at stage 3, abundance of Firmicutes (especially OTUs ABRB07 and ABRB10) and Methanoculleus decreased, while Bacteroidetes and Methanocorpusculum became dominant. Thus, ABRB07 coupled with Methanoculleus and/or acetogen (ABRB10) may be key species for solvents degradation.  相似文献

The impact of a trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated wastewater on the microbial community structure of an anaerobic granular biomass at 15 °C compared to 37 °C was investigated. Four expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) bioreactors (R1-R4) were employed in pairs at 37 and 15 °C. The influents of one of each pair were supplemented with increasing concentrations of TCE (max. 60 mg l−1). At 37 °C, stable operation was maintained with 88% COD removal and >99% TCE removal at maximum influent TCE concentrations. R3 performance decreased at influent TCE concentration of 60 mg l−1, although TCE removal rates of >97% were recorded. Archaeal community analysis via clone library and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis, and bacterial community analysis via denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), indicated that temperature resulted in a greater change in community structure than the presence of TCE, and clones related to cold adaptation of biomass were identified at 15 °C.  相似文献

This study focused on the diversity of bacterial communities from two series of two-stage constructed wetlands (CWs) treating tannery wastewater, under different hydraulic conditions. Series were separately planted with Typha latifolia and Phragmites australis in expanded clay aggregates and operated for 31 months. The effect of plant species, hydraulic loading and unit stage on bacterial communities was addressed through bacterial enumeration and denaturating gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Diverse and distinct bacterial communities were found in each system unit, which was related in part to the type of plant and stage position (first or second unit in the series). Numerical analysis of DGGE profiles showed high diversity in each unit with an even distribution of species. No clear relation was established between the sample collection time, hydraulic loading applied and the bacterial diversity.  相似文献

To establish an economical and environmentally friendly technology for ethylene removal from horticultural facilities and industrial point sources, a bench-scale natural zeolite biofiltration system was developed in this study. The system was evaluated for its performance in removing ethylene from an artificially contaminated air stream and characterized for its bacterial diversity under varied ethylene concentrations, and in different spatial stages of the filter. The biofilter enabled to approximately 100% remove ethylene at loading rates of 0.26-3.76 g m−3 h−1 when operated with inoculum containing enriched ethylene-degrading bacteria. The bacterial diversity and abundance varied with the height of the biofilter. Moreover, the occurrence and predominance of specific bacterial species varied with the concentrations of ethylene introduced into the biofilter, as observed by PCR-DGGE methods. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the biofilter system supported a diverse community of ethylene-degrading bacteria, with high similarity to species in the classes Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacilli, and Actinobacteria.  相似文献

The performance of a pilot-scale biological nutrient removal process has been evaluated for 336 days, receiving the real municipal wastewater with a flowrate of 6.8 m3/d. The process incorporated an intermittent aeration reactor for enhancing the effluent quality, and a nitrification reactor packed with the porous polyurethane foam media for supporting the attached-growth of microorganism responsible for nitrification. The observation shows that the process enabled a relatively stable and high performance in both organics and nutrient removals. When the SRT was maintained at 12 days, COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus removals averaged as high as 89% at a loading rate of 0.42–3.95 kg COD/m3 d (corresponding to average influent concentration of 304 mg COD/L), 76% at the loading rate of 0.03–0.27 kg N/m3 d (with 37.1 mg TN/L on average), and 95% at the loading rate of 0.01–0.07 kg TP/m3 d (with 5.4 mg TP/L on average), respectively.  相似文献

Galactomyces geotrichum MTCC 1360, a yeast species showed 88% ADMI (American dye manufacturing institute) removal of mixture of structurally different dyes (Remazol red, Golden yellow HER, Rubine GFL, Scarlet RR, Methyl red, Brown 3 REL, Brilliant blue) (70 mg l−1) within 24 h at 30 °C and pH 7.0 under shaking condition (120 rpm). Glucose (0.5%) as a carbon source was found to be more effective than other sources used. The medium with metal salt (CaCl2, ZnSO4, FeCl3, MgCl2, CuSO4) (0.5 mM) showed less ADMI removal as compared to control, but did not inhibit complete decolorization. The presence of tyrosinase, NADH-DCIP reductase and induction in laccase activity during decolorization indicated their role in degradation. HPTLC (High performance thin layer chromatography) analysis revealed the removal of individual dyes at different time intervals from dye mixture, indicating preferential degradation of dyes. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and HPLC (High performance liquid chromatography) analysis of samples before and after decolorization confirmed the biotransformation of dye. The reduction of COD (Chemical oxygen demand) (69%), TOC (Total organic carbon) (43%), and phytotoxicity study indicated the conversion of complex dye molecules into simpler oxidizable products having less toxic nature.  相似文献

The genetic diversity and differentiation of eleven R. rosea populations from different parts of its wide area of occurrence were studied by ISSR markers. Using eight primers, 252 DNA fragments were generated, and 243 of those DNA fragments were found to be polymorphic, indicating a high genetic variability at the species level (P = 96.4%, h = 0.176, SI = 0.291). Relatively low levels of diversity were determined at the population level (P 30.6-59.1%, h 0.088-0.165, SI 0.137-0.257). AMOVA analysis revealed that the majority of the genetic variation was within populations (65.42%), and the variance among populations was 34.58%. Cluster analysis revealed two groups of R. rosea populations; these groups likely represent distinct evolutionary lines in the species, which are different in genetic structure, evolutionary history and chorological migration routes.  相似文献

An anaerobic digestion technique was applied to textile dye wastewater aiming at the colour and COD removal. Pet bottles of 5 L capacity were used as reactor which contains methanogenic sludge of half a liter capacity which was used for the treatment of combined synthetic textile dye and starch wastewater at different mixing ratios of 20:80, 30:70, 40:60, 50:50 and 60:40 with initial COD concentrations as 3520, 3440, 3360, 3264 and 3144 mg L−1, respectively. The reactor was maintained at room temperature (30 ± 3 °C) with initial pH of 7. The maximum COD and colour removal were 81.0% and 87.3% at an optimum mixing ratio of 30:70 of textile dye and starch wastewaters. Both Monod’s and Haldane’s models were adopted in this study. The kinetic constants of cell growth under Haldane’s model were satisfactory when compared to Monod’s model. The kinetic constants obtained by Haldane’s model were found to be in the range of μmax = 0.037-0.146 h−1, Ks = 651.04-1372.88 mg L−1 and Ki = 5681.81-18727.59 mg L−1.  相似文献

In this study, the performance of 5.4 L hybrid upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (HUASB) reactor for treating poultry slaughterhouse wastewater under mesophilic conditions (29-35 °C), was investigated. After starting-up, the reactor was loaded up to an OLR of 19 kg COD/m3 d and achieved varied TCOD and SCOD removal efficiencies of 70-86% and 80-92%, respectively. The biogas was varied between 1.1 and 5.2 m3/m3 d with the maximum methane content of 72%. The maximum methane yield was 0.32 m3/kg CODremoved at an OLR of 9.27 kg COD/m3 d. Black matured granules of size between 2.5 and 5 mm were observed at the end of 225 d operation. RTD study showed the flow behavior was in mixed regime at the end of performance study. Step wise polynomial regression analysis was fitted well. Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta bacteria were dominant at the end of start-up whereas Methanosarcina, Cocci and rods were predominant at the end of performance studies.  相似文献

A two-stage UASB reactor was employed to pretreat acrylic fiber manufacturing wastewater. Mesophilic operation (35 ± 0.5 °C) was performed with hydraulic retention time (HRT) varied between 28 and 40 h. Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) in the reactor was maintained about 8000 mg/L. The results showed COD and sulfate removal could be kept at 51% and 75%, respectively, when the HRT was no less than 38 h. Sulfate reduction mainly occurred in the acidification-stage reactor while methane production mainly occurred in the methane-stage reactor. The size of granule formed in the acidification-stage reactor ranged between 1 and 5 mm while the largest size of granule in the methane-stage reactor ranged from 0.5 to 2 mm. Compared to microbial populations in the acidification-stage reactor, the microbial diversity in methane-stage reactor was more abundant. In the acidification-stage reactor, the Syntrophobacter sulfatireducens devoted to both sulfate reduction and acetate production.  相似文献

The performance and temporal variation of four hybrid, intermittent loading, pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) were tested for treating domestic wastewater of three different C/N ratios (2.5:1, 5:1, and 10:1, respectively). Two hybrid systems each consisted of the two identical VFCWs in-series, with up-up or down-down flow. The other two hybrid systems consisted of the first VFCWs (up or down flow) followed by a second VFCWs (down or up flow, respectively). The effects of combination mode, season, load level, and interactions on nutrient removal were studied in synthetic wastewater in the two-stage VFCW systems. With varying C/N ratios for influent water (from 2.5:1, 5:1 to 10:1) average removal efficiencies for the two-bed two-stage systems were as follows: COD 73-93%, TN 46-87%, TP 75-90%, and TOC 40-66%, respectively. All two-bed hybrid VFCWs were efficient in removing organics and total phosphorus, and reached the highest removal rates when the C/N ratios were 10 and 5, respectively. The hybrid systems for different flow direction beds had significantly higher performance (P < 0.05) during the wetlands operational period. Compared to the four types of hybrid VFCWs, the two-stage combination with different flow directions achieved significantly higher TN and TOC reductions (P < 0.05). The highest total nitrogen (P < 0.05) and total phosphorus reductions in down-up flow VFCWs were observed at C/N 5:1. However, for organic matter and total organic carbon, the highest COD and TOC removal rates occurred when C/N ratios were 5-10 for the down-up flow VFCWs. With appropriate control of combined mechanisms in series, the concentrations of carbon and nitrogen sources in the influent can achieve the optimal effects of nutrient removal.  相似文献

Individual and combined effects of microwave (MW) and alkali pretreatments on sludge disintegration and subsequent aerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) were studied. Pretreatments with MW (600 W-85 °C-2 min), conventional heating (520 W-80 °C-12 min) and alkali (1.5 g NaOH/L - pH 12-30 min) achieved 8.5%, 7% and 18% COD solubilization, respectively. However, combined MW-alkali pretreatment synergistically enhanced sludge solubilization and achieved 46% COD solubilization, 20% greater than the additive value of MW alone and alkali alone (8.5 + 18% = 26.5%). Moreover, the results of the batch aerobic digestion study on MW-alkali pretreated sludge showed 93% and 63% reductions in SCOD and VSS concentrations, respectively, at 16 days of SRT. The VSS reduction was 20% higher than that of WAS without pretreatment.  相似文献
