Hydrocracking of used cooking oil is studied as a potential process for biofuels production. In this work several parameters are considered for evaluating the effectiveness of this technology, including hydrocracking temperature, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) and days on stream (DOS). Conversion and total biofuels production is favored by increasing temperature and decreasing LHSV. However moderate reaction temperatures and LHSVs are more attractive for diesel production, whereas higher temperatures and smaller LHSVs are more suitable for gasoline production. Furthermore heteroatom (S, N and O) removal increases as hydrocracking temperature increases, with de-oxygenation being particularly favorable. Saturation, however, is not favored with temperature indicating the necessity of a pre-treatment step prior to hydrocracking to enable saturation of the double bonds and heteroatom removal. Finally the impact of extended operation (catalyst life) on product yields and qualities indicates that all reactions are affected yet at different rates.  相似文献

Every vegetable oil needs specific process parameters for separation. These have to be determined in experiments for distinct scales and process parameters. Subsequently, fractionations of a mixture of 12 and a mixture of 8 fatty acids were carried out with the objective of producing a cloud point of 8 to 5 °C in the unsaturated product fraction. The data are used to present an improved version of a separation coefficient. The process is streamlined by reducing the crystallization steps to a minimum and decreasing the yield of the higher melting fractions. The filtration step was performed in different scales of the filter units to find the limits. To optimize the separation of fatty acid mixtures further an additional sweating procedure was applied. The following study highlights the scaleup in suspension crystallization of the examined materials and varied process parameters.  相似文献

In this study we used the assimilation of isotope labeled CO(2) to measure the substrate preferences by two different bioaugmentation mixtures proposed for bioremediation of diesel oil contamination. All active microorganisms assimilate CO(2) in various carboxylation processes involved in growth. The CO(2) assimilation by the two mixtures was measured upon addition of glucose, diesel oil or specific compounds present in diesel oil (naphthalene, toluene, hexadecane, and octane). It was shown that within short term incubations with diesel oil (<5 h), one bioaugmentation mixture was superior to the other regarding the assimilation of CO(2). This observation was confirmed in a labor-intensive long term microcosm study (60 days). The applied method open various possibilities for fast pre-testing of substrate-preferences by microbial-bioaugmentation mixtures without microcosm experiments, onsite tests, and complicated chemical analysis. This study also demonstrates the possibility to obtain further information on the substrate preferences at a single cell level of phylogenetically defined microbial subgroups in bioaugmentation mixtures, based on combined analyses of microautoradiography and fluorescence in situ hybridization.  相似文献

The question of how animals process stimulus mixtures remains controversial as opposing views propose that mixtures are processed analytically, as the sum of their elements, or holistically, as unique entities different from their elements. Overshadowing is a widespread phenomenon that can help decide between these alternatives. In overshadowing, an individual trained with a binary mixture learns one element better at the expense of the other. Although element salience (learning success) has been suggested as a main explanation for overshadowing, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. We studied olfactory overshadowing in honeybees to uncover the mechanisms underlying olfactory-mixture processing. We provide, to our knowledge, the most comprehensive dataset on overshadowing to date based on 90 experimental groups involving more than 2700 bees trained either with six odourants or with their resulting 15 binary mixtures. We found that bees process olfactory mixtures analytically and that salience alone cannot predict overshadowing. After normalizing learning success, we found that an unexpected feature, the generalization profile of an odourant, was determinant for overshadowing. Odourants that induced less generalization enhanced their distinctiveness and became dominant in the mixture. Our study thus uncovers features that determine odourant dominance within olfactory mixtures and allows the referring of this phenomenon to differences in neural activity both at the receptor and the central level in the insect nervous system.  相似文献

Petroleum hydrocarbon mixtures in soils and groundwater present unique challenges in the estimation of potential human exposures and subsequent health risks. A major component of risk assessment affected by mixtures is the evaluation of environmental fate. The fate of petroleum mixtures may be evaluated by using either of three approaches: (1) the evaluation of the fate of indicator chemical(s), (2) the evaluation of the fate of the mixture as a whole with a surrogate, and (3) the evaluation of the fate of the hydrocarbon mixture as a whole. The limiting factor in the selection of an approach is the availability of information on specific chemical constituents in the mixture. The evaluation of environmental fate requires quantitative information regarding the distribution, mobility, and degradation/transformation as represented by various physicochemical properties. In addition to the availability of this information, the selection of the evaluation method should be consistent with the goals of the project, as each approach will produce different results. This presentation discusses the issues related to the identification and implementation of each of the approaches to the evaluation of the environmental fate of four petroleum mixtures (crude oil, JP‐5, mineral spirits, and diesel) for risk assessment purposes.  相似文献

为研究不同棕榈油替代水平对黄颡鱼生长性能、肌肉脂肪酸组成、形体指标和肝脏组织结构的影响, 实验采用5组等氮(400 g/kg)等脂(100 g/kg)等能(15.70 MJ/kg)饲料饲喂黄颡鱼[(16.15±0.04) g], 对照饲料以鱼油鲶豆油1鲶2混合为脂肪源, 实验饲料以棕榈油分别替代10、25、40和55 g/kg的混合脂肪源。经过8周的养殖实验, 结果表明棕榈油替代水平对黄颡鱼的摄食量、终末体重、特定生长率、饲料效率和蛋白沉积率未产生显著性的影响(P>0.05), 但是上述指标均呈现先升高后略微下降的趋势, 并在25 g/kg替代组达到最大值。背肌肌肉中亚油酸和n-3HUFA含量随着棕榈油替代水平的上升而显著下降(P<0.05), 但n-3/n-6比值随着棕榈油替代水平的上升而显著上升(P<0.05), 棕榈油替代水平对各组黄颡鱼的肥满度和脏体比未产生显著性的影响(P>0.05), 但是55 g/kg棕榈油替代水平组肝体比显著高于25 g/kg棕榈油添加组(P<0.05), 且55 g/kg棕榈油替代水平组黄颡鱼的肝脏组织出现细胞肿胀, 细胞核移位, 肝血窦和脂肪细胞数量明显增多等不良影响。据上所述: 对于黄颡鱼幼鱼, 棕榈油可以替代25 g/kg的混合脂肪源(鱼油鲶豆油=1鲶2)不影响鱼体生长性能并且在一定程度上改善了背肌肌肉脂肪酸组成。  相似文献

Background

The honeybee has to detect, process and learn numerous complex odours from her natural environment on a daily basis. Most of these odours are floral scents, which are mixtures of dozens of different odorants. To date, it is still unclear how the bee brain unravels the complex information contained in scent mixtures.

Methodology/Principal Findings

This study investigates learning of complex odour mixtures in honeybees using a simple olfactory conditioning procedure, the Proboscis-Extension-Reflex (PER) paradigm. Restrained honeybees were trained to three scent mixtures composed of 14 floral odorants each, and then tested with the individual odorants of each mixture. Bees did not respond to all odorants of a mixture equally: They responded well to a selection of key odorants, which were unique for each of the three scent mixtures. Bees showed less or very little response to the other odorants of the mixtures. The bees'' response to mixtures composed of only the key odorants was as good as to the original mixtures of 14 odorants. A mixture composed of the other, non-key-odorants elicited a significantly lower response. Neither an odorant''s volatility or molecular structure, nor learning efficiencies for individual odorants affected whether an odorant became a key odorant for a particular mixture. Odorant concentration had a positive effect, with odorants at high concentration likely to become key odorants.

Conclusions/Significance

Our study suggests that the brain processes complex scent mixtures by predominantly learning information from selected key odorants. Our observations on key odorant learning lend significant support to previous work on olfactory learning and mixture processing in honeybees.  相似文献

In the solid phase preparation of synthetic peptide libraries, equimolarity of the resultant peptides in the mixture simplifies the identification of active compounds. Two primary methods for the preparation of combinatorial peptide mixtures are currently used. In the first method, the starting resin is divided into equal aliquots, individual amino acids are coupled to each aliquot, and the resin is then recombined. This process is repeated for each position. However, due to the physical process, each resin bead contains only one peptide sequence. Statistically, for mixtures of longer sequences, an ever-increasing amount of resin is necessary to ensure complete representation of each peptide in the library. Thus, each peptide will be represented in the library if a sufficient number of resin beads are used. In addition, the concentration of each peptide in the library depends on both the number of mixture positions in the library and the amount of resin used. In the second method, mixtures of amino acids are coupled simultaneously at each addition step. The proportion of each amino acid in the reaction mixture is varied inversely to its reaction rate such that, ideally, an equimolar mixture of each peptide is synthesized. An advantage of this method over the previous method is that each peptide is ensured to be represented in the library, although not necessarily in equimolar amounts. It is known that not only do the coupling rates of each amino acid vary, but the coupling rates of individual amino acids also change when coupled to different amino acid resins. Consequently, in order to obtain equimolar peptide mixtures through the use of mixtures of protected amino acids, the ratio of reaction rates of one amino acid over another must be constant irrespective of the resin-bound amino acid. If this premise is true, this method of synthesis offers a significant advantage over the previous method since, theoretically, equimolar peptide libraries could be synthesized. The influence of the resin-bound amino acid on the relative reaction rates of incoming amino acids was investigated in the current study. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Hemiparasitic plants have green leaves, but extract water and solutes from neighbouring plants. It is still poorly understood how different host plants in communities contribute to parasite performance, as species that are good hosts in single‐host experiments may not necessarily be preferred hosts in mixtures. We grew the root hemiparasite Rhinanthus alectorolophus (Orobanchaceae) together with each of 13 host species (experiment 1) and with 15 different four‐species mixtures of these hosts (experiment 2) that differed in the number of legumes and of host functional groups. Parasites profited from mixtures including more legumes and from mixtures including different host functional groups. Some host species and mixtures were very tolerant of parasitism and supported large parasites without being strongly suppressed in their own growth, but the suppression of a species in the single‐host experiment did not explain the suppression of a species in a host mixture. We thus calculated for each host species an index of the difference in suppression between the two experiments which may be related to host use in a mixture. Host quality (mean parasite biomass with a host species) in the single‐host experiment could explain 64% of the variation in parasite biomass with a host mixture when it was weighted by the proportion of the host species in the mixture without the parasite and by the suppression difference index. Our results suggest that plant species which are the best hosts in single‐host experiments are not always those used most strongly by a parasite growing with a mixture. Together with the finding that hemiparasites benefit from a mixed diet based on hosts from different functional groups this suggests that parasites prefer certain host species to obtain a mixed diet.  相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to determine the insecticidal activity of mixtures of Bacillus thuringiensis crystalline toxins and plant substances that could contribute to create a new bioinsecticide of high efficiency. We decided to determine the toxicity of crystals of B. thuringiensis MPU B9 isolate, azadirachtin (NeemAzal), mustard oil and their mixtures against lepidopteran pests: Cydia pomonella, Spodoptera exigua and Dendrolimus pini. The interaction of the components in mixtures against insects was evaluated and their utility in plant protection was assessed. The crystals and plant substances showed synergistic effect against all insect species. The occurrence of synergism between two components depended on the ratio of their concentration in mixtures. Slight amount of one of the components added to the mixture led to enhanced toxicity of the preparation. The supplementation of mustard oil with B. thuringiensis toxins from up to 0.3% of the mixture resulted in more than twofold higher observed mortality of L1 larvae of D. pini in comparison with expected mortality. The beneficial insecticidal effect of the mustard oil and crystals mixture was also noted when crystals comprised up to 1.3% and from 7 to 20% against L1 caterpillars of C. pomonella and L3 larvae of S. exigua, respectively. The insecticidal efficient effect was achieved when mixture of B. thuringiensis crystals and azadirachtin was used against the three species of lepidopteran pests. The combinations in which components interacted synergistically against caterpillars are potentially useful for making a new bioinsecticide for controlling lepidopteran pests in plant protection.  相似文献

Different components of functional biodiversity, such as functional type richness and composition, have been reported to affect the decomposition of litter mixtures. In spite of the numerous reports of these effects, mechanisms underlying patterns of decomposition in litter mixtures are still unclear. We analyzed whether mixture decomposition was affected by: (a) the number of species in the mixture (mixture richness); and (b) the mixture’s functional composition (% of fast- vs. slow-decomposing species included in the mixture). We then tested if variation between observed and expected values of decomposition in mixtures was associated to: (c) the initial litter characteristics of the component species (initial nitrogen, lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose content of litters); and (d) the chemical heterogeneity of the mixtures (variation in the same chemical compounds between the components in each mixture). When up to 5 species representing different functional types were included, both species richness and functional composition showed statistically significant non-additive, and in general positive, effects on litter mixture decomposition. The positive effect of mixture richness on decomposition did not disappear, but was much less marked, when considering mixture with slow-decomposing species only. Although the main driver of decomposition in a mixture is still the average decomposability of the component species (itself largely determined by litter quality), the species interactions in a mixture add a consistent source of variability that is worth considering when predicting the decomposability of a given mixture. We showed that a greater positive difference between observed decomposition rates and that expected from its component species alone was found in mixtures with higher mean nitrogen content and a higher heterogeneity in non-labile compounds. Our results offer quantitative proof that litter chemical heterogeneity, as well as the mean quality of the mixture, can affect the decomposability in litter mixtures.  相似文献

The enzymatic synthesis of phenolic lipids by lipase-catalyzed transesterification of dihydrocaffeic acid (DHCA) with fish liver oil was investigated in a selected organic solvent medium. These synthesized phenolic lipids have potential use as nutraceutical products. Using a molar ratio of 1:8 DHCA to fish liver oil in hexane:2-butanone mixtures of 75:25 and 85:15 (v/v), the lipase-catalyzed reaction resulted in maximum conversion of 55.8 and 65.4%, respectively. The maximum conversion of phenolic monoacylglycerols in hexane:2-butanone mixture of 75:25 and 85:15 (v/v) was 40.3 and 37.7%, respectively; using the same solvent mixtures, the conversions of the phenolic diacylglycerol were 15.8 and 36.8%, respectively. Hexane:2-butanone mixture of 75:25 (v/v) was, therefore, the best organic solvent mixture for the production of phenolic monoacylglycerols, while that of 85:15 (v/v) was best for the production of phenolic diacylglycerols. The phenolic lipids produced from the fish liver oil and DHCA demonstrated antioxidant property as indicated by its free radical scavenging capacity.  相似文献

We observed that complex mixtures of aromatic compounds isolated from a coal-derived oil suppressed the mutagenic activity of the indirect mutagens benzo[a]pyrene, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene, 2-aminofluorene, and 2-acetylaminofluorene as measured in the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay, using strain TA98 and metabolic activation with Aroclor-induced rat-liver S9 or microsomes. The mixture also inhibited S9-dependent benzo[a]pyrene metabolism and covalent binding to DNA in a cell-free system. The mixture did not suppress the activity of either the direct acting mutagens 2-nitrofluorene and benzo[a]pyrene diol-epoxide, or of the indirect mutagen N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene which requires a microsomal deacetylase for metabolic activation. Spectrophotometric measurements showed that components of the mixture bound to microsomal cytochrome P-450. The mixture did not inhibit microsomal NADPH-cytochrome c (P-450) reductase. These observations show that the mixtures inhibited metabolic activation by the microsomal monooxygenase system, probably by binding of unidentified components to cytochrome P-450. The resulting inhibition of mutagenesis may have implications for risk estimates for the mixtures we examined as well as for other types of complex mixtures for which similar inhibitory effects have been observed.  相似文献

A differential aversive associative conditioning paradigm wasused to demonstrate the ability of spiny lobsters to discriminatebehaviorally between four 41-component chemical mixtures. Thesemixtures were based on natural extracts of crab, mullet, oysterand shrimp. Previously, we demonstrated, using the same paradigm,that lobsters conditioned to avoid the shrimp mixture coulddiscriminate, to varying degrees, between the shrimp mixtureand the other three mixtures. The present study was performedto compare the perceived quality of all four mixtures. Thiswas accomplished by conditioning four groups of animals, eachgroup to a different mixture type, and then using multidimensionalscaling (MDS) analysis to compare simultaneously the similaritiesand dissimilarities among the four mixtures as inferred by passiveand active avoidance behaviors. These two types of behaviorsrevealed different aspects of the discrimination: greater differentiationof the conditioned mixture from the non-conditioned mixtureswas indicated by active avoidance behavior, while gradationsin the degree of discrimination between the conditioned mixtureand each of the non-conditioned mixtures were indicated by passiveavoidance behaviors. Overall, lobsters perceived crab and shnmpmixtures as being similar to one another and dissimilar to mulletand oyster mixtures, while they perceived mullet and oystermixtures to be dissimilar to one another and to the crab andshrimp mixtures. Comparison of results from MDS analyses ofbehavioral mixture discrimination, neural mixture discriminationand mixture compositions may be used both to provide an indicationof the type of neural coding used to make these behavioral discriminationsand to identify the components of the mixtures that are responsiblefor recognition of and differential response to the mixtures.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate different strategies for the application of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN). Three different models of spray nozzles with air induction (AI 11003, TTI 11003 and AD-IA 11004), three spray pressures (207, 413 and 720 kPa), four different additives for tank mixtures (cane molasses, mineral oil, vegetable oil and glycerin) and the influence of tank mixture stirring time were all evaluated for their effect on EPN (Steinernema feltiae) viability and pathogenicity. The different nozzles, at pressures of up to 620 kPa, were found to be compatible with S. feltiae. Vegetable oil, mineral oil and molasses were found to be compatible adjuvants for S. feltiae, and stirring in a motorized backpack sprayer for 30 minutes did not impact the viability or pathogenicity of this nematode. Appropriate techniques for the application of nematodes with backpack sprayers are discussed.  相似文献

It is difficult to overstate the complexity of assessing risks from chemical mixtures. For every valid reason to assess risks from mixtures, there appears an equally valid question as to whether it is possible to do so in a scientifically rigorous and relevant manner. Because so few data exist for mixtures, current mixture assessment methods must rely on untested assumptions and simplifications. That the accuracy of risk estimates improve with the number of chemicals assessed together as mixtures is a valid assumption only if assessment methods for mixtures are better than those based on individual chemicals. On the other hand, arbitrarily truncating a mixture assessment to make it manageable may lead to irrelevant risk estimates. Ideally, mixture assessments should be as broad as necessary to improve accuracy and reduce uncertainty over assessments that only use toxicity data for single chemicals. Further broadening the scope may be ill advised because of the tendency to increase rather than decrease uncertainty. Risk assessment methods that seek to be comprehensive at the expense of increased uncertainty can hardly be viewed as improvements. It would be prudent to verify that uncertainty can be reduced before burdening the risk assessment process with more complexity.  相似文献

Natural odors are often complex mixtures of different compounds. These mixtures can be perceived to have qualities that are different from their components. Moreover, components can be difficult to distinguish within a blend, even if those components are identifiable when presented individually. Thus, odor components can interact along the olfactory pathway in a nonlinear fashion such that the mixture is not perceived simply as the sum of its components. Here we investigated odor-evoked changes in Ca2+ concentration to binary blends of plant-related substances in individually identified glomeruli in the moth Spodoptera littoralis. We used a wide range of blend ratios and a range of concentrations below the level at which glomerular responses become saturated. We found no statistically significant cases where the mixture response was greater than both component responses at the same total concentration (synergistic interactions) and no statistically significant cases where the mixture response was less than either component presented individually (suppressive interactions). Therefore, we conclude that, for the plant mixtures studied, information of their components is preserved in the neural representations encoded at the first stage of olfactory processing in this moth species.  相似文献

Summary Factorial models commonly used in the analysis of overall and component yields of binary mixtures of genotypes are generalised to include mixtures of any number of components (size, m) and the form of an analysis of variance for fitting such a model to tertiary mixtures is outlined. Such a model contains main effects and interactions up to the mth order, and is specific to the size of mixture so that no equivalence necessarily exists between similar parameter sets for different sized mixtures. Monocultures can be regarded as a special case of the general model.A simple model of intra-and inter-component competition is defined which assumes that plants do not interact in their competitive effects on others, a condition which is equivalent to an absence of second and higher order interactions in statistical analyses of mixtures of any size. Simple scaling tests involving the yields of components or whole mixtures of different sizes can also be used to test the adequacy of the model. This competition model least to a linear relationship between the mean yield of a mixture and the reciprocal of the number of components it contains, and thus allows the prediction of means and other statistical parameters for mixtures of one size from those of others.  相似文献

In vivo electrophysiological recordings from populations of olfactory receptor neurons in the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, clearly showed that both electro-olfactogram and integrated neural responses of olfactory receptor cells to complex mixtures consisting of up to 10 different amino acids were predictable with knowledge of (a) the responses to the individual components in the mixture and (b) the relative independence of the respective receptor sites for the component stimuli. All amino acid stimuli used to form the various mixtures were initially adjusted in concentration to provide approximately equal response magnitudes. Olfactory receptor responses to both multimixtures and binary mixtures were recorded. Multimixtures were formed by mixing equal aliquots of 3-10 different amino acids. Binary mixtures were formed by mixing equal aliquots of two equally stimulatory solutions. Solution 1 contained either one to nine different neutral amino acids with long side-chains (LCNs) or one to five different neutral amino acids with short side-chains (SCNs). Solution 2, comprising the binary mixture, consisted of only a single stimulus, either a LCN, SCN, basic, or acidic amino acid. The increasing magnitude of the olfactory receptor responses to mixtures consisting of an increasing number of neutral amino acids indicated that multiple receptor site types with highly overlapping specificities exist to these compounds. For both binary mixtures and multimixtures composed of neutral and basic or neutral and acidic amino acids, the receptor responses were significantly enhanced compared with those mixtures consisting of an equal number of only neutral amino acids. These results demonstrate that receptor sites for the basic and acidic amino acids, respectively, are highly independent of those for the neutral amino acids, and suggest that a mechanism for synergism is the simultaneous activation of relatively independent receptor sites by the components in the mixture. In contrast, there was no evidence for the occurrence of mixture suppression.  相似文献
