The heavy use of fertilizers in agricultural lands can result in significant nitrate (NO3) loadings to the aquatic environment. We hypothesized that biological denitrification in agricultural ditches and streams could be enhanced by adding elemental sulfur (So) to the sediment layer, where it could act as a biofilm support and electron donor. Using a bench-scale stream mesocosm with a bed of So granules, we explored NO3 removal fluxes as a function of the effluent NO3 concentrations. With effluent NO3 ranging from 0.5 mg N L−1 to 4.1 mg N L−1, NO3 removal fluxes ranged from 228 mg N m−2 d−1 to 708 mg N m−2 d−1. This is as much as 100 times higher than for agricultural drainage streams. Sulfate (SO42−) production was high due to aerobic sulfur oxidation. Molecular studies demonstrated that the So amendment selected for Thiobacillus species, and that no special inoculum was required for establishing a So-based autotrophic denitrifying community. Modeling studies suggested that denitrification was diffusion limited, and advective flow through the bed would greatly enhance NO3 removal fluxes. Our results indicate that amendment with So is an effective means to stimulate denitrification in a stream environment. To minimize SO42− production, it may be better to place So deeper in the sediment layer.  相似文献

A pilot plant involving a nitritation-anammox process was operated for treating digester supernatant. In the preceding nitritation process, ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were immobilized in gel carriers, and the growth of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was suppressed by heat-shock treatment. For the following anammox process, in order to maintain the anammox biomass in the reactor, a novel process using anammox bacteria entrapped in gel carriers was also developed. The nitritation performance was stable, and the average nitrogen loading and nitritation rates were 3.0 and 1.7 kg N m−3 d−1, respectively. In the nitritation process, nitrate production was completely suppressed. For the anammox process, the startup time was about two months. Stable nitrogen removal was achieved, and an average nitrogen conversion rate of 5.0 kg N m−3 d−1 was obtained. Since the anammox bacteria were entrapped in gel carriers, stable nitrogen removal performance was attained even at an influent suspended solids concentration of 1500 mg L−1.  相似文献

The present study investigates the formation of aerobic granular sludge in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with palm oil mill effluent (POME). Stable granules were observed in the reactor with diameters between 2.0 and 4.0 mm at a chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading rate of 2.5 kg COD m−3 d−1. The biomass concentration was 7600 mg L−1 while the sludge volume index (SVI) was 31.3 mL g SS−1 indicating good biomass accumulation in the reactor and good settling properties of granular sludge, respectively. COD and ammonia removals were achieved at a maximum of 91.1% and 97.6%, respectively while color removal averaged at only 38%. This study provides insights on the development and the capabilities of aerobic granular sludge in POME treatment.  相似文献

Denitrification beds are a simple approach for removing nitrate (NO3) from a range of point sources prior to discharge into receiving waters. These beds are large containers filled with woodchips that act as an energy source for microorganisms to convert NO3 to nitrogen (N) gases (N2O, N2) through denitrification. This study investigated the biological mechanism of NO3 removal, its controlling factors and its adverse effects in a large denitrification bed (176 m × 5 m × 1.5 m) receiving effluent with a high NO3 concentration (>100 g N m−3) from a hydroponic glasshouse (Karaka, Auckland, New Zealand). Samples of woodchips and water were collected from 12 sites along the bed every two months for one year, along with measurements of gas fluxes from the bed surface. Denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA), factors limiting denitrification (availability of carbon, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, pH, and concentrations of NO3, nitrite (NO2) and sulfide (S2−)), greenhouse gas (GHG) production - as nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) - and carbon (C) loss were determined. NO3-N concentration declined along the bed with total NO3-N removal rates of 10.1 kg N d−1 for the whole bed or 7.6 g N m−3 d−1. NO3-N removal rates increased with temperature (Q10 = 2.0). In laboratory incubations, denitrification was always limited by C availability rather than by NO3. DO levels were above 0.5 mg L−1 at the inlet but did not limit NO3-N removal. pH increased steadily from about 6 to 7 along the length of the bed. Dissolved inorganic carbon (C-CO2) increased in average about 27.8 mg L−1, whereas DOC decreased slightly by about 0.2 mg L−1 along the length of the bed. The bed surface emitted on average 78.58 μg m−2 min−1 N2O-N (reflecting 1% of the removed NO3-N), 0.238 μg m−2 min−1 CH4 and 12.6 mg m−2 min−1 CO2. Dissolved N2O-N increased along the length of the bed and the bed released on average 362 g dissolved N2O-N per day coupled with N2O emission at the surface about 4.3% of the removed NO3-N as N2O. Mechanisms to reduce the production of this GHG need to be investigated if denitrification beds are commonly used. Dissolved CH4 concentrations showed no trends along the length of the bed, ranging from 5.28 μg L−1 to 34.24 μg L−1. Sulfate (SO42−) concentrations declined along the length of the bed on three of six samplings; however, declines in SO42− did not appear to be due to SO42− reduction because S2− concentrations were generally undetectable. Ammonium (NH4+) (range: <0.0007 mg L−1 to 2.12 mg L−1) and NO2 concentrations (range: 0.0018 mg L−1 to 0.95 mg L−1) were always very low suggesting that anammox was an unlikely mechanism for NO3 removal in the bed. C longevity was calculated from surface emission rates of CO2 and release of dissolved carbon (DC) and suggested that there would be ample C available to support denitrification for up to 39 years. This study showed that denitrification beds can be an efficient tool for reducing high NO3 concentrations in effluents but did produce some GHGs. Over the course of a year NO3 removal rates were always limited by C and temperature and not by NO3 or DO concentration.  相似文献

This study verifies the potential applicability of horizontal-flow anaerobic immobilized biomass (HAIB) reactors to pentachlorophenol (PCP) dechlorination. Two bench-scale HAIB reactors (R1 and R2) were filled with cubic polyurethane foam matrices containing immobilized anaerobic sludge. The reactors were then continuously fed with synthetic wastewater consisting of PCP, glucose, acetic acid, and formic acid as co-substrates for PCP anaerobic degradation. Before being immobilized in polyurethane foam matrices, the biomass was exposed to wastewater containing PCP in reactors fed at a semi-continuous rate of 2.0 μg PCP g−1 VS. The applied PCP loading rate was increased from 0.05 to 2.59 mg PCP l−1 day−1 for R1, and from 0.06 to 4.15 mg PCP l−1 day−1 for R2. The organic loading rates (OLR) were 1.1 and 1.7 kg COD m−3 day−1 at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 24 h for R1 and 18 h for R2. Under such conditions, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of up to 98% were achieved in the HAIB reactors. Both reactors exhibited the ability to remove 97% of the loaded PCP. Dichlorophenol (DCP) was the primary chlorophenol detected in the effluent. The adsorption of PCP and metabolites formed during PCP degradation in the packed bed was negligible for PCP removal efficiency.  相似文献

The formation of aerobic granules with low organic loading synthetic wastewater (150-200 mg L−1 of influent COD, acetate/propionate = 1/3) at low aeration rate (0.6 cm s−1 of superficial gas velocity) had been investigated in the anaerobic/oxic/anoxic SBR. Aerobic granules with smooth surface and compact structure were successfully obtained after 50 days. However, these aerobic granules were unstable when the d(0.9) of granules increased to more than 1 mm. The results suggested that the aerobic granules with small diameter (smaller than 1000 μm) were more favorable for treating the low substrate loading wastewater at the low aeration rate. The cycle test revealed that most of the influent COD was removed at the anaerobic stage. The effluent concentrations of N-NH4+ and P-PO43− were lower than 1 mg L−1, and the effluent concentration of nitrate gradually decreased with the granulation. Phosphate accumulating organisms were found to utilize O2 or NOx as electron acceptor for phosphorus removal in the study. Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal occurred inside the granules.  相似文献

The maximum propionic acid (HPr) removal rate (RHPr) was investigated in two lab-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) reactors. Two feeding strategies were applied by modifying the hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the UASBHRT and the influent HPr concentration in the UASBHPr, respectively. The experiment was divided into three main phases: phase 1, influent with only HPr; phase 2, HPr with macro-nutrients supplementation and phase 3, HPr with macro- and micro-nutrients supplementation. During phase 1, the maximum RHPr achieved was less than 3 g HPr-COD L−1 d−1 in both reactors. However, the subsequent supplementation of macro- and micro-nutrients during phases 2 and 3 allowed to increase the RHPr up to 18.1 and 32.8 g HPr-COD L−1 d−1, respectively, corresponding with an HRT of 0.5 h in the UASBHRT and an influent HPr concentration of 10.5 g HPr-COD L−1 in the UASBHPr. Therefore, the high operational capacity of these reactor systems, specifically converting HPr with high throughput and high influent HPr level, was demonstrated. Moreover, the presence of macro- and micro-nutrients is clearly essential for stable and high HPr removal in anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

Biomass productivity of 350 mg DCW L−1 day−1 with a final biomass concentration of 3.15 g DCW L−1 was obtained with Neochloris oleoabundans grown in artificial wastewater at sodium nitrate and phosphate concentrations of 140 and 47 mg L−1, respectively, with undetectable levels of residual N and P in effluents. In secondary municipal wastewater effluents enriched with 70 mg N L−1, the alga achieved a final biomass concentration of 2.1 g DCW L−1 and a biomass productivity of 233.3 mg DCW L−1 day−1. While N removal was very sensitive to N:P ratio, P removal was independent of N:P ratio in the tested range. These results indicate that N. oleoabundans could potentially be employed for combined biofuel production and wastewater treatment.  相似文献

The biogeochemical processes that drive nutrient transformations and recycling in organic marine sediment-water environments were studied for 17 months in a zero-effluent intensive recirculating culture system. The system consisted of a 10 m3 gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) tank coupled to aerobic and anaerobic water treatment elements. Nutrients and alkalinity were measured in the system to quantify the main biogeochemical processes. Fractions of the carbon fed in feed were found in fish (18.3%) and in sludge (11%); the missing carbon was respired by fish (45%) and by aerobic (8.4%) and anaerobic (7.7%) microorganisms. Fractions of the nitrogen fed in feed were found in fish (15.4%) and in sludge (14.3%); the missing nitrogen was eliminated by nitrification-denitrification. Most of the phosphorus and ash fed in feed and not found in fish accumulated within the sludge in the system. The rates of nitrification, denitrification and sulphate reduction increased with time, reaching 0.3 g N m− 2 d− 1, 53 g N m− 2 d− 1 and 145 g S m− 2 d− 1, respectively. Nitrification developed more rapidly than denitrification, leading at first to nitrate accumulation (to 20 mmol NO3 l− 1 by day 200) and a decrease in alkalinity. Once denitrification surpassed nitrification, nitrate concentrations decreased, eventually being reduced to < 0.3 mmol NO3 l− 1 by day 510, and alkalinity stabilized. Toxic hydrogen sulphide, generated within the anaerobic sludge, was oxidized by oxygen and nitrate as it diffused through the anaerobic-aerobic sediment-water interface. When nitrate levels in the water above the sludge dropped below 2 mmol l− 1, sulphide was also oxidized in the fluidized bed reactor. Denitrification reduced nitrate in the water, respired (jointly with sulphate reduction) carbon in the sludge, oxidized the hydrogen sulphide, and contributed to stabilization of alkalinity and accumulation of polyphosphate in bacteria as a major sink of labile P.  相似文献

Denitrification beds are a simple and relatively inexpensive technology for removing nitrate from point source discharges. To date, operational beds have used wood media as the carbon source, as it provides a sustained nitrate removal rate (2-10 g N m−3 of media d−1) while maintaining permeability. In pilot-scale (2.9 m−3) denitrification beds receiving municipal wastewater effluent dosed with KNO3, we looked at improving nitrate removal by using alternative carbon media (maize cobs) and increasing bed temperature through passive solar heating. The influence of flow regime (horizontal-point, horizontal-diffuse, downflow and upflow) on short-circuit flow was also investigated. The long-term nitrate removal rate (21.8 g N m−3 d−1) of the maize cob beds over the 15-month period of the trial was 2-11-fold higher than sustained removal rates reported by other researchers for wood-based beds. While passive solar heating raised the mean bed temperature by 3.4 °C, it did not cause a measurable increase in the nitrate removal rate due to the variability in the removal rate exceeding the expected increase due to temperature.Horizontal flow had more short-circuiting than vertical flow. Short-circuiting in the horizontal flow was attributed to flow being concentrated near the top surface due to the buoyancy effect of warmer water. Greater short-circuiting in the solar heated horizontal and upflow beds than in the corresponding unheated beds was attributed to the buoyancy effect being more pronounced in the solar heated beds.Overall, downflow was deemed the most effective of the four tested flow regimes. It provided the highest increase in bed temperature due to solar heating, had the highest nitrate removal rate in the latter part of the trial and had more plug-flow characteristics. While passive solar heating raised bed temperature, we were unable to demonstrate a significant difference (at 95% CL) in nitrate removal rate between the unheated and solar heated beds because of the high variability in nitrate removal rate and the increase in short-circuiting in the solar heated horizontal and upflow beds.  相似文献

Performance of a wastewater treatment system utilizing a sulfur-redox reaction of microbes was investigated using a pilot-scale reactor that was fed with actual sewage. The system consisted of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor with a recirculation line. Consequently, the total CODCr (465 ± 147 mg L−1; total BOD of 207 ± 68 mg L−1) at the influent was reduced (70 ± 14 mg L−1; total BOD of 9 ± 2 mg L−1) at the DHS effluent under the conditions of an overall hydraulic retention time of 12 h, a recirculation ratio of 2, and a low-sewage temperature of 7.0 ± 2.8 °C. A microbial analysis revealed that sulfate-reducing bacteria contributed to the degradation of organic matter in the UASB reactor even in low temperatures. The utilized sulfur-redox reaction is applicable for low-strength wastewater treatment under low-temperature conditions.  相似文献

The influence of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) on the performance of the hydrolytic–acidogenic step of a two-stage anaerobic digestion process of sunflower oil cake (SuOC) were assessed. The experiments were performed in laboratory-scale completely stirred tank reactors at mesophilic (35 °C) temperature. Six OLR (ranging from 4 to 9 g VS L−1 d−1) for four HRTs (8, 10, 12 and 15 days) were tested to check the effect of each operational variable. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the hydrolysis yields obtained for all HRTs and OLRs assayed were in the range of 20.5–30.1%. In addition, the acidification degree of the substrate was mainly influenced by the OLR but not by the HRTs, the highest value (83.8%) being achieved for an HRT of 10 days and an OLR of 6 g VS L−1 d−1.  相似文献

Population density, nitrate turnover, and oxygen respiration of benthic foraminiferans were investigated in the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) off the Chilean coast. Live foraminiferans were found predominantly in the upper 3 mm of the sediment, and the nitrate accumulating species Nonionella cf. stella and Stainforthia sp. dominated with a combined standing stock of 2.0 × 106 Rose Bengal stained specimens m− 2. The rate of denitrification in cells of N. cf. stella analyzed with nitrous oxide microsensors during acetylene inhibition was 84 ± 33 pmol C individual− 1 d− 1. Multiplied with the standing stock of N. cf. stella and Stainforthia sp. this yielded a minimum benthic denitrification rate of 173 µmol N m− 2 d− 1 by foraminiferans. Foraminiferal denitrification, which seemed to account for almost all benthic denitrification at the investigated site will be overlooked by most conventional methods measuring benthic denitrification. Compared to the denitrification rates, the potential rates of nitrate accumulation and oxygen respiration by N. cf. stella were an order of magnitude higher (864 pmol N individual− 1 d− 1 and 760 ± 87 pmol C individual− 1 d− 1, respectively), which seems an adaptation to the infrequent availability of nitrate and oxygen in the sediment surface.  相似文献

There has been significant global growth in the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. The fundamental microbial processes involved in the biodegradation of organic wastewater pollutants determine the range of design and operational parameters relevant to individual constructed wetlands. In this study, the biodegradation and mineralization of ethanol by acclimated and non-acclimated microbial populations in pilot-scale constructed wetlands were compared. By increasing the pollutant concentration at incremental intervals (incremental priming), the biodegradative capacity of a sand-filled constructed wetland was significantly enhanced. At an influent COD concentration of 15,800 mg L−1, no volatile fatty acids were detected in the effluent of an incrementally primed system and the maximum effluent COD concentration was 180 mg L−1. In contrast, an identical, unprimed system, amended with a lower concentration of COD (7587 mg L−1), exhibited a maximum effluent COD concentration of 1400 mg L−1, with the anaerobic metabolites, butyrate and propionate accounting for up to 83% of the effluent COD. It was demonstrated that the use of incremental priming, together with a vertical subsurface flow mode of operation enhanced long-term function of constructed wetlands. Future research should focus on determining the concentration gradients and incremental intervals necessary for optimal microbial acclimation to a range of organic pollutants and/or wastewaters, in order to minimize start-up times without significantly impairing the benefits derived from incremental priming.  相似文献

Nitrification under changing salinities (0-9%), temperatures (6-50 °C), ammonia (0-5 g N L−1) and nitrite concentrations (0-0.4 g N L−1) was investigated in fixed-bed reactors. For all conditions ammonia oxidation rates (AOR) were lower than nitrite oxidation rates (NOR). AORs and NORs increased from 12.5 to 40 °C and were very low at 6 °C and almost zero at 50 °C. No recovery of nitrification was obtained after incubation at 50 °C, whereas nitrification was restorable after incubation at 6 °C. Ammonia concentrations of 5 g N L−1 or nitrite concentrations up to 0.125 g N L−1 decreased AOR to almost zero. AORs and NORs recovered if ammonia or nitrite was removed. At concentrations of 1 and 5 g N L−1 ammonia AOR and NOR were inhibited by 50%, whereas 27 mg N/L nitrite inhibited AOR by 50%.  相似文献

The inhibitory effects of 90-189 mg l−1 of sulfide and 25-75 mg-N l−1 of nitrate on methanogenesis were investigated in a mixed methanogenic culture using butyrate as carbon source. In the initial phase of 90 mg l−1 S2− test, autotrophic denitrification of nitrate occurred with sulfide as the electron donor. Then the sulfate-reducing strains converted the produced sulfur back to sulfide via heterotrophic oxidation pathway. Methanogenesis was not markedly inhibited when 90 mg l−1 of sulfide was dosed alone. When 25-75 mg-N l−1 of nitrate was presented, initiation of methanogenesis was seriously delayed. Nitrogen oxides (NOx), the intermediates for nitrate reduction via denitrification pathway, inhibited methanogenesis. The 90 mg l−1 of sulfide favored heterotrophic dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) pathway for nitrate reduction. Possible ways of maximizing methane production from an organic carbon-rich wastewater with high levels of sulfide and nitrate were discussed.  相似文献

Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) hold great promise for drinking water production because of potential energy savings during the desalination process. In this study, we developed a continuously operated MDC - upflow microbial desalination cell (UMDC) for the purpose of salt removal. During the 4-month operation, the UMDC constantly removed salts and generated bio-electricity. At a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 days (salt solution) and current production of ∼62 mA, the UMDC was able to remove more than 99% of NaCl from the salt solution that had an initial salt concentration of 30 g total dissolved solids (TDS)/L. In addition, the TDS removal rate was 7.50 g TDS L−1 d−1 (salt solution volume) or 5.25 g TDS L−1 d−1 (wastewater volume), and the desalinated water met the drinking water standard, in terms of TDS concentration. A high charge transfer efficiency of 98.6% or 81% was achieved at HRT 1 or 4 d. The UMDC produced a maximum power density of 30.8 W/m3. The phenomena of bipolar electrodialysis and proton transport in the UMDC were discussed. These results demonstrated the potential of the UMDC as either a sole desalination process or a pre-desalination reactor for downstream desalination processes.  相似文献

This study evaluated two different support materials (ground tire and polyethylene terephthalate [PET]) for biohydrogen production in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) treating synthetic wastewater containing glucose (4000 mg L−1). The AFBR, which contained either ground tire (R1) or PET (R2) as support materials, were inoculated with thermally pretreated anaerobic sludge and operated at a temperature of 30 °C. The AFBR were operated with a range of hydraulic retention times (HRT) between 1 and 8 h. The reactor R1 operating with a HRT of 2 h showed better performance than reactor R2, reaching a maximum hydrogen yield of 2.25 mol H2 mol−1 glucose with 1.3 mg of biomass (as the total volatile solids) attached to each gram of ground tire. Subsequent 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of particle samples revealed that reactor R1 favored the presence of hydrogen-producing bacteria such as Clostridium, Bacillus, and Enterobacter.  相似文献

Rapid formation of denitrifying sulfide removal granules is of practical interest to start up an expanded granular sludge bed reactor for wastewater treatment. This study demonstrates that methanogenic granules can be easily acclimated into DSR granules in one day, removing all 1.30 kg m−3 d−1 sulfide and converting >90% of 0.56 kg-N m−3d−1 nitrate into di-nitrogen gas. Under high loadings, reactor performance, however, declined. Under high loading rates, sulfide first inhibited the heterotrophic denitrifier (Caldithrix sp.), thereby accumulating nitrite in the system; the autotrophic denitrifier (Pseudomonas sp. C23) was then inhibited by accumulated nitrite, leading to breakdown of the entire DSR process.  相似文献
