This paper reports morphological and physiological characteristics of a first root-hairless mutant (RH2) of rice (Oryza sativa L.), which can be useful in advancing knowledge on the role of root hairs in water and nutrient uptake, and genetics of root hairs. The mutant was selected among NaN3 mutagenized progeny of the rice cultivar Oochikara. Microscopic observations showed absence of root hairs in RH2. At the seedling stage, RH2 showed shorter seedling height and shorter roots compared to the wild type variety Oochikara. Because of the differences in seedling growth, all comparisons between Oochikara and RH2 in uptake-related characters were made on the basis of values adjusted by the dry weight of either the shoot or the root. When grown at low water potential in soil, Oochikara and RH2 were similar in shoot water content and transpiration per unit shoot dry weight, and similarly, at low water potential in solution culture, there was no significant difference between Oochikara and RH2 in transpiration per unit shoot dry weight. These results suggest that at the seedling stage, root hairs do not significantly contribute to uptake of water. In solution culture, Oochikara and RH2 did not significantly differ in phosphate uptake per unit root dry weight. This result supports the previous work that root hairs do not contribute to phosphate uptake in solution culture. Regarding to response to plant hormones, RH2 showed a higher level of resistance to two synthetic auxins, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) than Oochikara. NAA treatment induced very short root hairs in RH2, suggesting that the absence of root hairs in RH2 may be due to a shortage of endogenous auxin. Genetic analysis showed that the root hairless character in RH2 is inherited as a single recessive gene.  相似文献

The effects of low root zone temperatures (RZT) on nutrient demand for growth and the capacity for nutrient acquisition were compared in maize and wheat growing in nutrient solution. To differentiate between direct temperature effects on nutrient uptake and indirect effects via an altered ratio of shoot to root growth, the plants were grown with their shoot base including apical shoot meristem either within the root zone (low SB), i.e. at RZT (12°, 16°, or 20°C) or, above the root zone (high SB), i.e. at uniformly high air temperature (20°/16° day/night).At low SB, suboptimal RZT reduced shoot growth more than root growth in wheat, whereas the opposite was true in maize. However, in both species the shoot growth rate per unit weight of roots, which was taken as parameter for the shoot demand for mineral nutrients per unit of roots, decreased at low RZT. Accordingly, the concentrations of potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) remained constant or even increased at low RZT despite reduced uptake rates. At high SB, shoot growth at low RZT in both species was higher than at low SB, whereas root growth was not increased. At high SB, the shoot demand per unit of roots was similar for all RZT in wheat, but increased with decreasing RZT in maize. Uptake rates of K at high SB and low RZT adapted to shoot demand within four days, and were even higher in maize than in wheat. Uptake rates of P adapted more slowly to shoot demand in both species, resulting in reduced concentrations of P in the shoot, particularly in maize. In conclusion, the two species did not markedly differ in their physiological capacity for uptake of K and P at low RZT. However, maize had a lower ability than wheat to adapt morphologically to suboptimal RZT by increasing biomass allocation towards the roots. This may cause a greater susceptibility of maize to nutrient deficiency, particularly if the temperatures around the shoot base are high and uptake is limited by nutrient transport processes in the soil towards the roots.  相似文献

Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris), healthy or infected with rust,Puccinia lagenophorae, was grown at a range of nutrient concentrationsin sand culture. Specific absorption rates calculated on thebasis of root dry weight (SARW) were greater in rusted thancontrol groundsel for nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Whilethe magnitudes of these stimulations varied, they occurred acrossthe whole range of nutrient concentrations. By contrast, specificabsorption rate on the basis of root length (SARL) were littlechanged by rust at any external nutrient concentration; SARLfor phosphate and potassium were slightly reduced when nutrientswere freely available. Water flux per unit dry root weight and length was stimulatedby rust because transpiration per unit leaf area was more rapidin infected plants after fungal sporulation. However, water-fluxand the rate of uptake of nutrients were correlated only whenexpressed on the basis of root weight and increased transpirationdid not appear to be the mechanism underlying increased rootactivity. Rather, increased SARW for N, P and K could very largelybe attributed to increased shoot demand per unit root, whichresulted from the higher shoot: root (S: R) ratios of infectedindividuals. Changes in S: R accounted for 92, 81 and 57% oftotal variation in SARW for K, P and N respectively. Greatervalues for SARW were possible because specific root length (SRL)increased, producing more functional root per unit root weight. The lack of stimulation in SARL in response to rust could beexplained since the higher SRL of infected plants resulted instable values of shoot weight per unit root length, i.e. shootdemand was not increased by infection on this basis. Peach seedlings were grown in aerated nutrient solution in small(15 cm3) or large (500 cm3) containers. Subsequently, some plantswere removed from the small containers to the large, or werestressed by root pruning. Half the plants received a foliarspray of synthetic cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) every4 days. Analysis of all the results enabled correlations between functionand growth measurements to be made. Irrespective of the treatmentthe total water and the total nutrient uptake by the roots wasdirectly related to the total dry weight increment. This suggeststhat for both water and nutrient uptake a functional equilibriumexisted between the root and the shoot. Where BAP treatmentincreased the top: root ratio there was a corresponding increasein the rate of water uptake per unit length of root. The relationship between root number and leaf number and thecomplementary action of BAP suggests that the root tip and itsproduction of cytokinins exerts considerable control over topgrowth.  相似文献

The relation between interspecific variation in relative growth rate and carbon and nitrogen economy was investigated. Twentyfour wild species were grown in a growth chamber with a nonlimiting nutrient supply and growth, whole plant photosynthesis, shoot respiration, and root respiration were determined. No correlation was found between the relative growth rate of these species and their rate of photosynthesis expressed on a leaf area basis. There was a positive correlation, however, with the rate of photosynthesis expressed per unit leaf dry weight. Also the rates of shoot and root respiration per unit dry weight correlated positively with relative growth rate. Due to a higher ratio between leaf area and plant weight (leaf area ratio) fast growing species were able to fix relatively more carbon per unit plant weight and used proportionally less of the total amount of assimilates in respiration. Fast growing species had a higher total organic nitrogen concentration per unit plant weight, allocated more nitrogen to the leaves and had a higher photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency, i.e. a higher rate of photosynthesis per unit organic nitrogen in the leaves. Consequently, their nitrogen productivity, the growth rate per unit organic nitrogen in the plant and per day, was higher compared with that of slow growing species.  相似文献

Summary A model of the way the rate of growth of a plant may be affected by the level of supply of a nutrient is presented. Growth rate is linked to the nutrient level of the photosynthetic tissues, which is assumed to control changes in the net assimilation rate, the leaf area per unit shoot weight, the shoot: root ratio, the root surface area, and the distribution of nutrient between root and shoot. The uptake of nutrient depends on the concentration of nutrient at the root surface, the root surface area and its absorbing power. All these relationships may be determined in stirred solution culture. A method of applying this information to soil grown plants is suggested.Soil Science Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Science, University of Oxford  相似文献

Summary Two experiments are described in which a comparison was made of differences in phosphorus contents, dry matter production and root growth between a semi-dwarf wheat (Israel M68) and a standard height cultivar (Olympic). In the first experiment, using soil as a support medium, Olympic had higher root dry weight and root to shoot ratios, but lower root and shoot phosphorus contents, than Israel M68. In the second experiment, using solution culture technique, Olympic had higher root dry weights and root to shoot ratios, but there was no cultivar difference in either root or shoot phosphorus content. This suggests an improved ability in the semi-dwarf wheat to explore the soil system. In both experiments the rate of uptake of phosphorus, when calculated per unit root fresh weight, was highest with Israel M68. Root measurements in a later experiment (Experiment 2a) indicated similar total fresh weights for both cultivars, but on a unit fresh weight basis, the semi-dwarf cultivar had a greater root number, root area and lateral root volume. Although further studies to clarify the situation are necessary, these differences may be associated with the enhanced grain yield response to superphosphate of some semi-dwarf wheats when compared to standard height cultivars. re]19751104  相似文献

In order to manipulate the shoot demand for mineral nutrients per unit root weight, maize ( Zea mays L.) seedlings were grown in nutrient solution with different temperatures in the root zone and at the shoot base. The aerial temperature was kept uniform at 24/20°C day/night. At a root zone temperature (RZT) of 24°C, shoot growth was reduced by decreasing the shoot base temperature (SBT) to 12°C; at a RZT of 12°C, shoot growth was increased by raising the SBT to 24°C. At both RZT root growth was not affected by the SBT. Thus, the shoot demand for nutrients per unit root was either increased by raising, or decreased by lowering the SBT. The net uptake rate of potassium (K), as determined from accumulation rates between sequential harvests, was not affected within the first 3 days after lowering the SBT, whereas net translocation rates of K into the shoot and translocation rates in the xylem exudate of decapitated plants were markedly reduced. Obviously, translocation of K into the shoot seems to be regulated independently from K uptake into the root cells. Translocation rates of K in the xylem exudate of decapitated plants were markedly reduced when the nutrient solution was replaced by CaCl2 solution during exudation. But, depending on the SBT before decapitation, significant differences remained in the translocation rates of K even when K uptake from the nutrient solution was prevented.
From the results it is suggested that xylem loading of K is regulated separately from K uptake from the external solution and that the adaptation of K translocation to shoot demand is coupled with an altered capacity of the root for xylem loading.  相似文献

Summary We tested the hypothesis that mycorrhizal infection benefits wild plants to a lesser extent than cultivated plants. This hypothesis stems from two observations: (1) mycorrhizal infection improves plant growth primarily by increasing nutrient uptake, and (2) wild plants often possess special adaptations to soil infertility which are less pronounced in modern cultivated plants. In the first experiment, wild (Avena fatua L.) and cultivated (A. sativa L.) oats were grown hydroponically at four different phosphorus levels. Wild oat was less responsive (in shoot dry weight) to increasing phosphorus availability than cultivated oat. In addition, the root: shoot ratio was much more plastic in wild oat (varying from 0.90 in the low phosphorus solution to 0.25 in the high phosphorus solution) than in cultivated oat (varying from 0.44 to 0.17). In the second experiment, mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal wild and cultivated oats were grown in a phosphorus-deficient soil. Mycorrhizal infection generally improved the vegetative growth of both wild and cultivated oats. However, infection significantly increased plant lifespan, number of panicles per plant, shoot phosphorus concentration, shoot phosphorus content, duration of flowering, and the mean weight of individual seeds in cultivated oat, while it had a significantly reduced effect, no effect, or a negative effect on these characters for wild oat. Poor positive responsiveness of wild oat in these characters was thus associated with what might be considered to be inherent adaptations to nutrient deficiency: high root: shoot ratio and inherently low growth rate. Infection also increased seed phosphorus content and reproductive allocation.  相似文献

Soybean plants (Glycine max L. Merr. var. Hawkeye), grown in nutrient solutions maintained at graded concentrations showed a large response in both shoot dry weight and total ion uptake. Growth rate was dependent upon nutrient concentration, even when quantity of nutrient was not limiting. Peak periods for absorption of specific ions at certain growth stages were not exhibited. Rates of ion uptake by soybeans were generally proportional to the growth rate during the period of major growth. It is suggested that a dilute nutrient solution could provide sufficient nutrients for adequate root growth prior to major shoot growth, at which time a more concentrated nutrient solution is needed.  相似文献

Maize seedlings were grown for 10 to 20 days in either nutrient solution or in soils with or without fertilizer supply. Air temperature was kept uniform for all treatments, while root zone temperature (RZT) was varied between 12 and 24°C. In some treatments the basal part of the shoot (with apical shoot meristem and zone of leaf elongation) was lifted up to separate the indirect effects of root zone temperature on shoot growth from the direct effects of temperature on the shoot meristem.Shoot and root growth were decreased by low RZT to a similar extent irrespective of the growth medium (i.e. nutrient solution, fertilized or unfertilized soil). In all culture media Ca concentration was similar or even higher in plants grown at 12 as compared to 24°. At lower RZT concentrations of N, P and K in the shoot dry matter decreased in unfertilized soil, whereas in nutrient solution and fertilized soil only the K concentration decreased. When direct temperature effects on the shoot meristem were reduced by lifting the basal part of the shoot above the temperature-controlled root zone, shoot growth at low RZT was significantly increased in nutrient solution and fertilized soil, but not in unfertilized soil. In fertilized soil and nutrient solution at low RZT the uptake of K increased to a similar extent as plant growth, and thus shoot K concentration was not reduced by increasing shoot growth rates. In contrast, uptake of N and P was not increased, resulting in significantly decreased shoot concentrations. It is concluded that shoot growth at suboptimal RZT was limited both by a direct temperature effect on shoot activity and by a reduced nutrient supply through the roots. Nutrient concentrations in the shoot tissue at low RZT were not only influenced by availability in the substrate and dilution by growth, but also by the internal demand for growth.  相似文献

The effect of shoot demand for nutrients on nutrient uptakeand translocation in the xylem exudate was studied in maizegrowing in nutrient solution at uniform shoot zone (24/2C,day/night), but different root zone temperatures (RZT: 12C,18C, 24C). The shoot base (apical shoot meristem and zoneof leaf extension) was either kept within or lifted above thecooling zone. In plants with their shoot base above the coolingzone (RZT: 12C and 18C) shoot growth was significantly increasedbut not root growth. Therefore, at suboptimal RZT shoot freshweight increment d–1 g–1 root fresh weight, whichwas taken as a parameter for the shoot demand for nutrientsper unit root, varied strongly depending on the temperatureof the shoot base (shoot base temperature, SBT). In short-term studies (2 h and 1 d after onset of temperaturetreatment) rates of nutrient (nitrogen, N; potassium, K; phosphorus,P; calcium, Ca) uptake or translocation in the xylem exudatewere markedly decreased at suboptimal RZT (12C, 18C), irrespectiveof the SBT. In long-term studies (3, 5, and 10 d after onsetof temperature treatment) uptake and translocation of K, N,and Ca, but not P, increased in plants at suboptimal RZT whenthe shoot demand was high (shoot base above the cooling zone)but decreased when the shoot demand was low (shoot base withinthe cooling zone). These results suggest, that the increase of translocation ratesof N, K, and Ca after long-term exposure to suboptimal RZT wasa consequence of a higher shoot demand per unit root fresh weightand not due to a direct temperature effect on the nutrient uptakesystem. Macduff, J. H., Hopper, M. J. and Wild, A. 1987. The effectof root temperature on growth and uptake of ammonium and nitrateby Brassica napus L. in flowing solution culture. I. Growth.—J.exp. Bot. 38: 42–52 Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Bien venu) was grown for49 d in flowing nutrient solution at pH 6?0 with root temperaturedecrementally reduced from 20?C to 5?C; and then exposed todifferent root temperatures (3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13,17 or 25?C)held constant for 14 d. The air temperature was 20/15?C day/nightand nitrogen was supplied automatically to maintain 10 mmolm–3 NH4NO3 in solution. Total dry matter production wasexponential with time and similar at all root temperatures givinga specific growth rate of 0?0784 g g–1 d–1. Partitioningof dry matter was influenced by root temperature; shoot: rootratios increased during treatment at 17?C and 25?C but decreasedafter 5 d at 3?C and 5?C. The ratio of shoot specific growthrate: root specific growth rate increased with the ratio ofwater soluble carbohydrates (shoot: root). Concentrations ofwater soluble carbohydrates in shoot and root were inverselyrelated to root temperature; at 3, 5 and 7?C they increasedin stem + petioles throughout treatment, coinciding with a decreasein the weight of tissue water per unit dry matter. These resultssuggest that the accumulation of soluble carbohydrates at lowtemperature is the result of metabolic imbalance and of osmoticadjustment to water stress. Tissue culture plantlets of loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) were compared to seedlings to quantify growth and developmental differences. The two plant types were grown in containers in a greenhouse and sampled periodically for twenty weeks. Dry weights and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of the shoots and roots were determined every two weeks.
During the twenty weeks in the greenhouse, seedlings grew to a greater size than the plantlets, but the relative rates of growth were approximately equal. Plantlets had significantly lower concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus per g of shoot dry weight. Seedlings were much more efficient at nutrient uptake per g of dry weight of root. Plantlets had thick, unbranched roots, which were inefficient at nitrogen and phosphorus uptake. Nutrient uptake based on an index of root surface area was equal in the plantlets and seedlings.
The main differences between plantlets and seedlings apparently were related to root system morphology rather than physiological processes. The uptake of nutrients showed the greatest difference between the plant types.  相似文献

Heterogeneous distribution of mineral nutrients in soil profiles is a norm in agricultural lands, but its influence on nutrient uptake and crop growth is poorly documented. In this study, we examined the effects of varying phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) distribution on plant growth and nutrient uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in a layered or split soil culture in glasshouse conditions. In the layered pot system the upper soil was supplied with P and either kept watered or allowed to dry or left P-deficient but watered, whereas the lower soil was watered and fertilised with K. Greater reductions in shoot growth, root length and dry weight in the upper soil layer occurred in −P/wet than in +P/dry upper soil treatment. Shoot P concentration and total P content were reduced by P deficiency but not by upper soil drying. Genotypic responses showed that K-efficient cv. Nyabing grew better and took up more P and K than K-inefficient cv. Gutha in well-watered condition, but the differences decreased when the upper soil layer was dry. In the split-root system, shoot dry weight and shoot P and K contents were similar when P and K were applied together in one compartment or separated into two compartments. In comparison, root growth was stimulated and plants took up more P and K in the treatment with the two nutrients supplied together compared with the treatment in which the two nutrients were separated. Roots proliferated in the compartment applied with either P or K at the expense of root growth in the adjoining compartment with neither P nor K. Heterogeneous nutrient distribution has a direct decreasing effect on root growth in deficient patches, and nutrient redistribution within the plant is unlikely to meet the demand of roots grown in such patches.  相似文献

Fifteen or 30 days of anaerobic growth conditions significantly reduced shoot and root nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, iron and manganese concentrations in seedlings of pond pine ( Pinus serotina Michx.), sand pine [ P. clausa (Engelm.) Sarg.] and drought-hardy and wet-site loblolly pine ( P. taeda L.) grown in a culture system using non-circulating, continuously flowing solution. Calcium and shoot magnesium levels were least affected by anaerobic growth conditions – largely reflecting the passive nature of their uptake. Shoot and root nutrient content (mg nutrient pot-1) followed similar trends, with wet-site loblolly and pond pine seedlings least affected by anaerobic solution culture. Shoot biomass of wet-site loblolly and pond pine seedlings was not affected by anaerobiosis, suggesting an increase in shoot nutrient utilization efficiency. Root biomass was significantly reduced by 15 or 30 days of anaerobiosis, with sand pine exhibiting the largest reduction in root dry weight (57%).
These results suggest that anaerobiosis interferes with net nutrient acquisition, even under the high nutrient conditions provided by solution culture. Sand pine suffered the largest reductions in shoot and root biomass and nutrient concentrations, showing earlier symptoms of waterlogging injury and nutrient stress than drought-hardy loblolly pine seedlings. Whether net nutrient acquisition decreased because of the reduction in root surface area available for absorption and/or reduced uptake efficiency cannot be ascertained from these data.  相似文献

The dry-matter production and nutrient uptake of forest-treeseedlings grown under controlled levels of nutrition in sub-irrigatedsand culture were investigated. Hardwood seedlings attainedgreater dry weight than conifer seedlings, and Pinus radiataa greater dry weight than P. contorta and P. nigra, but thesegreater dry weights were not related to greater leaf/weightratios, although seed size may have been an important influenceon final seedling dry weight. P. radiata was found to have alower requirement for P than P. contorta and P. nigra in oneexperiment. The demand (total nutrient uptake per unit of time) made bythree species for nutrients upon a site was shown to dependmore upon growth-rate per annum than on efficiency (quantityof nutrients required to produce a unit of dry matter). It isconcluded that the ability of tree species to grow satisfactorilyon soils of low nutrient status depends largely on their abilityfor relatively slow growth. On the other hand, species showinggood response to favourable sites may also make satisfactorygrowth on poor sites.  相似文献

The development of the seminal root system, its ability to absorbnitrate, and effects on shoot growth were studied in barleyplants in nutrient solution. The roots received either a uniformsupply of 1.0 mM nitrate (controls), or a supply of the samesolution restricted to a 4-cm length of only one of the mainseminal roots (axes) on each plant, the remainder of the rootsystem receiving a solution containing a low concentration (0.01mM). Marked increases took place in both the growth of lateralroots and the absorption and transport of 15N-labelled nitrate(per unit root weight) from the zone locally supplied with 1.0mM nitrate. These effects appear largely to compensate for thedeficient supply of nitrate to the remainder of the root system, since after 14 d the relative growth rate (g g–1d–1)of the total plant equals that of the controls. Rates of 15N-nitrateuptake (per unit root weight) remain relatively uniform throughoutthe 29-d experiment, during which root axes develop from theirinitial unbranched form to a complex system of laterals. Theresults are discussed in relation to possible mechanisms bywhich coordination is maintained between root growth, ion uptake, and shoot growth.  相似文献

Field and growth chamber studies were used to determine the effect of in-furrow application of PGR-IV on root and shoot development, and yield of cotton. In the field study, an in-furrow application of PGR-IV @ 73 mL ha–1 at planting increased yield by 18% compared to the untreated control, and by 11% compared to 2-foliar applications of 292 mL/ha–1 each at pinhead square stage of flower development and at first flower appearance. Growth chamber studies revealed that the in-furrow applications of PGR-IV @ 1.131L/plant dramatically increased root length (+47%), root dry weight (+29%), number of lateral roots per plant (+75%), and nutrient uptake one week after planting. These differences were still apparent five weeks later at pinhead square but to a lesser degree. The yield enhancement from the foliar applications was associated with increases in leaf growth, nutrient uptake, and boll number, whereas the yield enhancement from the soil application was associated with enhanced root growth and nutrient uptake. The positive effect of PGR-IV on root growth and accelerated early-season growth could have very substantial benefits in cotton production.  相似文献

Summary The vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus,Glomus versiforme increased significantly the growth ofAsparagus officinalis under controlled conditions using Turface as the growth medium. The growth responses, including increases in root fresh weight, numbers of shoots, shoot dry weight, and shoot height follow a pattern similar to other mycorrhizal systems. Indigenous VAM fungi appeared to have negative effects on average shoot fresh and dry weight, number of shoots per pot and average shoot height on one year oldA. officinalis seedlings obtained from the field and grown under controlled conditions. These results may be due either to the high levels of soluble phosphate present in the soil or the ineffectiveness of the particular indigenous fungi as mycorrhizal fungi in asparagus. Indigenous mycorrhizal fungi overwinter in asparagus root crown as vesicles and as external and internal hyphae. Soil obtained from the same fields as the one year old crowns was a good source of mycorrhizal inoculum for sterile seedlings.  相似文献
