Stages of normal development in the medaka Oryzias latipes   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Unfertilized eggs of Oryzias latipes were artificially inseminated and incubated at 26+/-1 degrees C. Careful observation of the process of embryonic development by light microscopy allowed division of the process into 39 stages based on diagnostic features of the developing embryos. The principal diagnostic features are the number and size of blastomeres, form of the blastoderm, extent of epiboly, development of the central nervous system, number and form of somites, optic and otic development, development of the notochord, heart development, blood circulation, the size and movement of the body, development of the tail, membranous fin (fin fold) development, and development of such viscera as the liver, gallbladder, gut tube, spleen and swim (air) bladder. After hatching, development of the larvae (fry) and young can be divided into six stages based on such diagnostic features as the fins, scales and secondary sexual characteristics.  相似文献

We studied the development and evolution of craniofacial features in the teleost fish, Astyanax mexicanus. This species has an eyed surface dwelling form (surface fish) and many different cave dwelling forms (cavefish) with various degrees of reduced eyes and pigmentation. The craniofacial features we examined are the tooth-bearing maxillary bones, the nasal and antorbital bones, the circumorbital bones, and the opercular bones, all of which show evolutionary modifications in different cavefish populations. Manipulations of eye formation by transplantation of the embryonic lens, by lentectomy, or by removing the optic vesicle showed that eye-dependent and -independent processes change both the surface fish and cavefish craniofacial skeletons. The size of the olfactory pits, which the nasal and antorbital bones define, and the size and positioning of the circumorbital bones were found to correlate with eye development. For the six suborbital bones (SO1-6), the relationship with the developing eye appears to be due to ossification initiated from foci in the suborbital canal of cranial neuromasts, whose patterning is also highly correlated with the presence or absence of an eye. By contrast, we found that the number of maxillary teeth, the number of SO3 bone elements, the positioning of SO4-6 with respect to the opercular bone, and the shape of the opercular bone are not dependent on eye formation and vary among different cavefish populations. The results suggest that evolution of the cavefish craniofacial skeleton is controlled by multiple developmental events, some a direct consequence of eye degeneration and others unrelated to loss of the eye.  相似文献

Selection on traits conferring reduced predation may be opposed by selection on other traits associated with reproduction. Here, we examined the hypothesis that traits associated with reproduction in Gammarus pulex are driven by predation. We studied G. pulex originating from ponds with two different kinds of predator regimes: (1) ponds with fish—often large, non-gap-limited predators and (2) ponds without fish where invertebrates are the dominant predators—often small, gap-limited predators with a much more restricted prey size range. We examined the body size of males and females in G. pulex amplexus pairs originating from fish and fishless ponds. We also examined, in the laboratory, their mating success, the number of offspring per female and offspring mortality under different rearing conditions, with or without fish cue. Mating success, defined as the percentage of amplexus pairs that produced live offspring, was higher for G. pulex from fishless ponds independent of rearing condition. Individuals from fish ponds were larger and they produced a higher number of offspring which tended to be related to female body size. Offspring mortality was higher in populations from fish ponds compared to populations from fishless ponds. Despite the higher offspring mortality, females from fish ponds had a higher number of offspring alive after 13 weeks, which is the approximate time it takes for G. pulex to reach maturity. Our data imply that no trade-off between reducing body size to reduce mortality caused by fish and maximising reproductive success exist in G. pulex from fish ponds. The strategy with many offspring may be the correct strategy in fishponds where predation pressure generally is higher than in fishless ponds.  相似文献

1. North‐eastern Spain is a hot spot for the introduction of alien fish species, and its native fish fauna is one of the most endangered worldwide. We used an extensive data set from 2002 to 2003 and historical information from the area to characterize fish diversity and establish conservation priorities in river catchments. 2. Diversity indices were used to characterize fish diversity at the basin scale. An index of conservation status was applied for each species, which considers the occurrence, abundance and endemicity of each taxon. We used indirect ordination methods to test the relationship among basin features and to identify those variables most correlated with each other. To identify physical, biotic and environmental characteristics that seem to make a basin particularly susceptible to invasion, we performed a step‐wise multiple regression to examine the relationship between the number of native, translocated and introduced fish species (including the original native species richness of each basin), and landscape variables. 3. Over a period of approximately 50 years, the mean range size of native fish species has decreased by 60%. The greatest decline occurred in Gasterosteus gymnurus, Anguilla anguilla and Salaria fluviatilis, for which species over 75% of the original distribution area has been lost. The species with the highest conservation index were Gasterosteus gymnurus and Salaria fluviatilis. 4. Basin area and the catchment type explained 70% of variation in native species richness, whereas the number of dams and basin area accounted for more than 80% of variation in the number of introduced species. 5. The original native species richness and the number of introduced species at basin scale were not related, and thus there was no evidence of “biotic resistance” to invasion. The restoration of natural hydrologic processes and the development of specific management tools to protect native species, such as the prioritization of areas for fish conservation and the eradication of local populations of exotic species, are required to restore native fish fauna in these catchments.  相似文献

The Micos Populationcave fish in statu nascendi or hybrid? Observations on the evolution of cavernicoles The Micos-Cave in the Sierra de la Colmena in the State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, contains a cavernicolous population of Astyanax mexicanus, whose members are for the most part blind, but, in contrast to other cave dwelling populations of the same species, appear almost normal in their pigmentation. Besides these, there are also large eyed and pigmented specimens to be found in this cave. Any transitional stages between the blind and the normal visioned fish are lacking. Offspring of the blind cavernicoles that are raised under light conditions develop a superficially lying eye which is markedly smaller than normal, attaining its size proportional to the light-intensity of the experimental conditions. The size and structure of the eye-remnants of the blind fish as well as the eyes of their offspring are considerably more variable than in the river specimens. Crossings of the blind Micos fish with the river fish Astyanax and also with a blind and unpigmented troglobiont of the same species - Sabinos fish - result in both cases in a more or less intermediate F1-hybrid. A strict inbreeding within the Micos fish, selecting specimens with especially large eyes, produced animals whose eyes are comparable to those of the river fish after only three offspring generations. Electrophoresis studies on the allozyme variability at various loci prove that the Micos fish is genetically only slightly different compared to the river fish. On the other hand in some allele frequencies there is an alternative variation between the two. The Micos fish also differs from the typical troglobionts which are monomorphic at almost all loci examined and also possess alleles that are not found in the river form. Based on the genetic constitution, the Micos fish and the river fish found in the cave do not form a panmictic population. It is also doubtful that the Micos fish is the progeny of a hybrid swarm which previously resulted from a cross between a real troglobiont and the newly arrived river fish, because the Micos fish is in every characteristic genetically very similar to the river fish, whereas no clear traces of troglobiont relationship are found. Thus the Micos fish actually appears to be a cave form in statu nascendi against which the river fish that find their way in from time to time cannot compete.  相似文献

An anadromous population (trachurus form) and three freshwater populations (leiurus form) of the three-spined stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus, in central Japan were compared with one another in the reproductive traits: body length at maturity, egg size, clutch size, the swell of abdomen and the number of eggs per nest. The anadromous fish which become larger in body size at maturity spawn eggs smaller in size and greater in number than the freshwater fish. The abdomen swell of gravid females expressed by the proportion of abdomen width to body length was greater in the freshwater fish. The anadromous male fish collected a mean of 2,638 eggs with a range of 1,119 to 4,052 eggs from about 6–7 females. In the three freshwater (the Yamayoke, the Tsuya and the Jizo) populations, males must have mated with about 9–22, 7–18 and 4–7 females respectively. It seems that theleiurus form increases its reproductive success by its much more mating opportunities and the parental efforts of nesting males as well as by spawning large eggs. Furthermore, among the freshwater populations, the Jizo one inhabiting the upper stream was clearly larger in body size, in egg size and in clutch size than the Yamayoke and the Tsuya ones which inhabit stable waterbodies with springs. It is possible that the Jizo population adopted the strategy of spawning a few large eggs as an adaptation to its habitat. The causal and functional explanations in reproductive characteristics among the four populations are discussed in regard to differences in the environmental conditions.  相似文献

The new fossil fish Musculopedunculus micklichi (type locality: the lower Oligocene slate sediments to the south of Heidelberg, FRG) is described from an incomplete skeleton impression. The diagnostic characters are the powerful and relatively deep caudal peduncle with the hemal and, probably, neural processes of anterior preural centra strongly enlarged, located at an angle of about 60°, as well as a compressed body, high number of vertebrae (probably, about 80), the dorsal fin probably slightly differentiated into the spiny and soft parts, and a well-developed fronto-occipital sagittal crest. On the basis of these and other features, the fossil taxon does not conform to the known Euzaphlegidae, Gempylidae, and Trichiuridae and is recognized as the new family Musculopedunculidae probably belonging to the Trichiuroidae.  相似文献

Gonad development of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus in two volcanic crater  lake  habitats (Sampaloc Lake, Taal Lake) in south Luzon, Philippines was examined during the annual reproductive cycle. The minimum body size‐at‐maturity of fish in these two lake habitats was also compared. Four gonad development stages were characterized as basis for the classification of ovarian (immature, maturing, mature, spawned) and testicular maturation (immature, maturing, mature) phases. The occurrence of all development stages in individual gonads suggest an asynchronous development whereby advanced stages are recruited continuously from a pool of younger stage germ cells to result in elevated female and male GSI throughout the annual cycle due to active gonadogenesis. Together with the increasing occurrence of advanced stage oocytes and spermatozoa from March until October, the elevated GSI of fish may indicate peak gonadal growth during the onset of the dry season (December–January) for eventual spawning from the beginning (May–June) until the end of the wet season (October–November). In both lake habitats, male fish were smaller than females but, regardless of sex, the minimum size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake was significantly smaller than fish in Taal Lake. Overall, asynchronous development during oogenesis and spermatogenesis allows for year‐round reproduction of silver therapon, with elevated gonad growth in the dry season in preparation for spawning during the wet season. Compared with fish in Taal Lake, a smaller size‐at‐maturity of fish in Sampaloc Lake may be a response of the wild fishery stock to long‐term high fishing mortality and degradation of the lake habitat.  相似文献

It has been noted that the introduction of small doses of dry prepupae of Hermetia illucens flies into the diet of the young Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus (0.5 g/kg feed) had a positive effect on the growth and development of fish. It was found that the average daily gain in the experimental group was 0.7 g. It was established that the blood biochemical parameters were within the norm in the fish of all groups; however, in the experimental tilapia, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate was significantly lower and a tendency to increase in the amount of hemoglobin and glucose was noted. It was revealed that in the seminiferous tubules of fish in the experimental group, the number of mature sperm was 5.9 times higher compared with the control, indicating an increase in the rate of spermatogenesis. It is assumed that the observed effects are due to the high content of manganese in the prepupae present in a biologically active divalent form.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to describe the otolith shape development of cod from post-metamorphosis larvae to juveniles and to examine whether shape development is an ontogenetically determined process. Fish were reared under three different temperature regimes and two feeding levels. I examined shape by the length~width relationship of the otolith as well as the number and size of the lobes formed. Otolith size and crenulation is exclusively linked to fish size, indicating an ontogenetically determined development. Otolith shape is closely associated with the spatial development of the lobes. This process is linked with food consumption. Higher food consumption leads to a higher number of larger lobes, resulting in a more rectangular otolith. In conclusion: Otolith shape development consists of an ontogenetic component in the form of increasing size and crenulation and an environmental component impacting on the size and number of the lobes formed.  相似文献

In Lake Albert Daphnia lumholtzi is found in two forms. One has a pointed anterior prolongation, or helmet, on the head. The other has a shorter rounded head, and was originally described as a separate species, D. monacha . The latter form dominates the zooplankton in the middle of the lake where planktivorous fish are rare or absent. The helmeted form becomes commoner near the margins of the lake and reaches its greatest abundance in Ndaiga Lagoon, where planktivorous fish are common. The possession of a helmet is associated with a reduction in the size of the carapace compared to the round headed form. The carapace with its contained eggs is the most conspicuous part of a cladoceran, so that the helmeted forms are at an advantage in the presence of planktivorous fish which locate their prey by sight. The mid-lake monacha forms are larger than specimens of the same form in Ndaiga Lagoon, where it is shown that Alestes baremose feeds selectively on the larger specimens of the monacha form.
The helmeted form produces more, but smaller eggs than the monacha form. The total brood volume (= mean egg volume x mean number eggs per female) is greatest in the midlake monacha forms. The selective advantages of variations in egg size and the possession of a helmet are discussed. It is concluded that the data from Lake Albert support the hypothesis of Brooks (1965) concerning the adaptive significance of helmet development in Daphnia .  相似文献

Background

Surveys of ontogenetic development of hearing and sound production in fish are scarce, and the ontogenetic development of acoustic communication has been investigated in only two fish species so far. Studies on the labyrinth fish Trichopsis vittata and the toadfish Halobatrachus didactylus show that the ability to detect conspecific sounds develops during growth. In otophysine fish, which are characterized by Weberian ossicles and improved hearing sensitivities, the ontogenetic development of sound communication has never been investigated. We analysed the ontogeny of the auditory sensitivity and vocalizations in the mochokid catfish Synodontis schoutedeni. Mochokid catfishes of the genus Synodontis are commonly called squeakers because they produce broadband stridulation sounds during abduction and adduction of pectoral fin spines. Fish from six different size groups - from 22 mm standard length to 126 mm - were studied. Hearing thresholds were measured between 50 Hz and 6 kHz using the auditory evoked potentials recording technique; stridulation sounds were recorded and their sound pressure levels determined. Finally, absolute sound power spectra were compared to auditory sensitivity curves within each size group.  相似文献

Previous studies have found no consistent relationship between egg size and the rate of development in fish. This is surprising since there are several hypothesis as to why such a relationship should exist. By using eggs from Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, we examined several developmental features repeatedly on live individuals. In all measured parameters except date of hatching, embryos from smaller eggs were found to develop faster. Time of hatching has often been used as a principal measurement for rate of development in fish, but our results suggest that this should be discontinued, since it is poorly correlated with the rates of development of other early life history features.  相似文献

Influence of feeding conditions and of the presence of a various number of shelters in basins on development of differentiation of juveniles of Salmo salar at the age 1+ and formation of smolts were studied under experimental conditions. The experiments had been carried out on groups of ten fish. The influence of investigated factors turned out to be significant. Under normal feeding four times a day, the quantity of formed smolts depends on the number of shelters: the more shelters that are available, the fewer smolts appear in groups. The presence of one shelter is a strong stimulant enhancing aggressive activity towards conspecific individuals, resulting in destruction of some fish in the group. Under feeding once a day, i.e., under food shortage, more fish perished, and the number of smolts decreased as the fish did not accumulate a sufficient energy potential for the morphophysiological transformation. One of the potential mechanisms of development of differentiation of fish juveniles into parrs and future smolts is discussed, based on domination of some fish possessing the individual territory and exclusion of subdominant specimens into open water as a result of social interaction.  相似文献

Metamorphosis in cod, Gadus morhua L., was investigated with respect to morphological changes in the alimentary tract (mouth, stomach and pyloric caeca) and external characters (finfold and fin development). Morphometric measurements and histological investigations were made on both larvae and juveniles and all fish lengths are given as standard length. Median unpaired fins started to develop when the fish were 9–10 mm in length. The larval median finfold was resorbed when fish reached a size of 11–15 mm. The vertebrae were formed in fish of 11–20 mm. The supraterminal mouth, seen in larvae <12 mm, changed gradually to a sub-terminal position in juveniles larger than 65 mm. The development of the stomach and pyloric caeca started at 15 mm and the juvenile form was seen in fish of 40 mm. The ability to store and grind food particles in the stomach developed gradually as fish increased in size from 20 to 40 mm. Compared to many other teleost species, cod juveniles are relatively large when the stomach and pyloric caeca become fully developed. These findings may have important implications for both start-feeding of cod larvae and the weaning of juveniles on to artificial diets.  相似文献

The presence of the two morphs, “typical” and “large mouth”, in the Antarctic fish species Trematomus newnesi (Perciformes, Notothenioidei) was recorded for the first time in nearshore waters of the South Shetland Islands (Potter Cove) and western Antarctic Peninsula (Petermann Island). The two morphs were distinguishable in specimens of 60–241 mm total length (TL); about 30% of the specimens constituted intermediate forms. In addition to the previously known characters separating the morphs, we found that the “relative size of the eye” can also be used to identify smaller and larger fish of the typical morph. The ecological significance of the two morphs remains unclear. Ratios of diagnostic characters for identification of the species at two size ranges (60–131 and 132–241 mm TL) are provided.  相似文献

Biological features of the three common fish species, pollock Theragra chalcogramma, Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, and saffron cod Eleginus gracilis (Gadidae), have been studied using a 20-year dataset (1995?2015). These species inhabit the northwestern Bering Sea in the summer–autumn period and form the schoolings in Olyutorsky-Navarin region. The size–age parameters, as well as the peculiarities of the body length and body weight dynamics, spawning periods, spawning range, and conditions, of the fish caught by different sampling gear have been analyzed. Due to the construction peculiarities and catch efficiency of the different catching gear, the largest specimens are found in the setlines and snurrevads; the fish caught by the trawls are characterized by the smallest size. The body length and body weight of pollock is greater in the pelagic trawl catches compared to the bottom trawl catches. The abundant brood of Gadidae may well be tracked on the multiyear dynamics graphs reflecting the size distribution, as well as by the decrease of biological parameters of the fish. The studied species inhabit the vast growth areas, so smaller body size of them in the coastal waters may be a result of a high ratio of the young specimens there.  相似文献
