Transition from a resting state with eyes closed (REC) to a resting state with eyes open (REO) is associated with visible changes in EEG, which are traditionally considered to be a sign of reorganization of the brain’s activity in response to visual stimuli. The EEGs recorded in the REC and REO states in complete darkness, when the stimulatory effect of light to the eye’s retina was absent, were compared. Thirty healthy subjects participated in the study. EEG in the range of 1.5–50 Hz was recorded from nineteen zones of the head monopolarly. It was found that, under conditions of complete darkness, the REC and REO states significantly differed in their EEG spectral power and coherence in the Δ, θ, α1, α2, β1, β2 and γ frequency bands. Under experimental conditions, these changes in the EEG could not be induced by external influence to the visual system. Therefore, we suppose that they are correlates of the switching of involuntary preliminary attention from internally directed attention specific for the REC state to externally directed attention specific for the REO state.  相似文献

The EEG was recorded in 19 standard derivations in 88 students in the following states: rest with the eyes open, memorization (learning) of bilingual verbal semantic pairs (Latin and Russian), and retrieval (check) of the learned information. In order to calculate the mean heart rate (HR) in each state, the electrocardiogram was recorded. The subjective difficulty of task performance was assessed. Statistical comparison of the spectral power estimates in these states for frequency bands θ (4–7 Hz), α1 (7–10 Hz), α2 (10–13 Hz), β1 (13–18 Hz), β2 (18–30 Hz), and γ (30–40 Hz) demonstrated a number of significant differences in the EEG absolute power (local synchronization) between the states reproducible in subgroups. Comparison of the states of memorization and retrieval showed that, in the state of memorization, the EEG power in the γ, β2, and θ bands was significantly lower throughout the cortical surface. Comparison of the active states with the reference state of rest showed that, in both active states, changes in the EEG power were of the same direction in the majority of the frequency bands (an increase in the θ, β2, and γ bands and a decrease in the α2 band) except α1, in which memorization was predominantly accompanied by a decrease in the power, whereas retrieval was associated with an increase. No significant differences were found between the states of memorization and retrieval in the HR or the subjective estimate of task difficulty. The results can be interpreted as a reflection of cognitive-specific forms of general preparatory attention.  相似文献

Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was used for 19-channel resting EEG analysis 111 patients at early stages of depressive disorder and 526 age-matched healthy subjects. Comparison of independent components power spectra in depressed patients and healthy subjects in two states: Eyes closed and Eyes open, has revealed significant differences between groups for three frequency bands: Theta (4-7.5 Hz), Alpha (7.5-14 Hz), and Beta (14-20 Hz). Increased power of alpha and theta activity in depressed patients at parietal and occipital sites may be caused by decreased cortical activation of these regions. Diffuse enhancement of beta activity level can correlate with anxiety symptoms which take an important place in clinical picture of depressive disorder at early stages. Using of ICA method for comparison of spectral characteristics of EEG in groups of patients with different brain pathology and healthy subjects gives a possibility to localize more precisely the discovered differences as compare to traditional analysis of EEG spectra.  相似文献

The rest states with the eyes open (RSEO) and closed (RSEC) were subjected to quantitative EEG study as states similar in the pattern of mental activity and subjective assessments but different in the EEG pattern. The mean values of the spectral power and EEG coherence function were compared in 74 subjects for the following bands: Δ, ?, α1, α2, β1, β2, and γ. Upon the transition from the RSEC to the RSEO, the EEG local power significantly decreased over the whole cortex for the α, ?, and β bands. A simultaneous decrease in the EEG power in all the bands (including β and γ) was most pronounced (as judged by relative changes and tests of significance of difference) in the parietooccipital derivations immediately related to the cortical zones where an increase in the neuronal activity upon opening the eyes is most probable. A significant increase in the EEG power was observed only for the γ band in frontal derivations F 3 and F 4. Significant differences in the mean EEG coherence in the RSEO-RSEC comparison were present in many derivation pairs, especially in the α2, β1, β2, and γ bands. For each of these bands, the number of differences determined on the basis of Fisher test was more than 70% of the maximum possible number. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the coherence was lower in the RSEO; however, in the caudal cortical zones, a higher coherence in the α1, ?, and Δ bands in the RSEO was rather typical. The results confirmed that the two states under study differ in a number of averaged EEG parameters with high statistical significance and may be used as reference states during performance of tasks with the eyes open and closed, respectively. The differences between the RSEC and the RSEO may be caused by the fact that the RSEC is a functional state oriented predominantly to the analysis of internal information (internally oriented), and the RSEO, predominantly to the analysis of information coming from the outside (externally oriented). The pattern of the observed EEG differences points to a combination of effects both localized in the visual zone and reflecting changes in the network cortical activity, i.e., simultaneous, although nonuniform, changes over all the main zones of the cortex. Comparison of the results with published estimations of differences in the local cerebral blood flow (ICBF) between the RSEO and the RSEC shows that increase in the ICBF may be associated with a local decrease in the EEG spectral power in any frequency band, including the high-frequency β and γ bands, or several frequency bands simultaneously.  相似文献

The EEGs of 885 healthy subjects of both sexes aged 7 to 89 years were recorded in two modes: with the subjects’ eyes closed and with the eyes open. The subjects were divided into 20 age groups, for each of which the normative values of the EEG spectral characteristics were determined: the total EEG power spectra and the EEG independent component power spectra in the Δ, ϑ, α, and β frequency bands. Tables of confidence intervals with a level of confidence of 0.95 were constructed for each electrode channel in the case of the EEG power spectra and for each component in the case of the EEG independent component power spectra. The normative values obtained may provide EEG specialists with objective criteria for assessing cerebral dysfunction.  相似文献

The subjects were divided into two groups according to the α1 and α2 spectral powers in the occipital derivations of the EEG recorded in the initial state with their eyes closed. Group I included subjects whose α1-rhythm spectral power (7–10 Hz) was more than 70% of the total α-rhythm band power. Group II included subjects whose α2-rhythm spectral power (10–13 Hz) was more than 70% of the total α-rhythm band power. It was established that, in the tasks requiring prediction of the subsequent result (memorizing a certain sequence of signals and its subsequent reproduction on the monitor screen), group I subjects differed from group II subjects in fewer sequence errors and a greater number of accurate predictions. In group II subjects, a decrease in the ϑ-band spectral power in the EEG of the central and frontal cortical areas was observed compared to the baseline. Therefore, the EEG ϑ-rhythm power at the memorizing stage was lower in them than in group II subjects. The results suggest that the baseline characteristics of ϑ-activity can be regarded as prognostic criteria of similar types of activity.  相似文献

The EEG was recorded in 19 standard derivations according to the international 10–20 system in 30 subjects during a test for figurative creativity. To involve subjects in the creative process, they were presented with the following creative tasks: (Cr1) thinking up and drawing an original picture; (Cr2) drawing a face, a house, and a clown in an original manner; (C1) drawing a picture from memory; and (C2) drawing geometric figures without any system. All the tasks had to be performed using a given set of geometric figures (a circle, semicircle, triangle, and rectangle). Statistical analysis of the EEG spectral power for the frequency bands α1, α2, β1, β2, and γ showed that the creative task performance was characterized by an increase in the EEG power in the β2 and γ bands and single differently directed power changes in the α1, α2, and β1 bands. The findings were compared to previous results of EEG studies on creative activity.  相似文献

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded by 19 standard derivations in 57 subjects in a resting state with the eyes opened, during memorization of verbal bilingual semantic pairs (Latin and Russian), and during retrieval (monitoring) of the learned information. Statistical comparison of the EEG spectral power in the frequency bands θ, α1, α2, β1, β2, and γ showed that induction of the states of memorization (encoding) and retrieval of the verbal information led to multiple significant changes in the EEG absolute power (local synchronization) as compared to the state of rest. Such changes took place simultaneously in different frequency bands over the entire cortex. The relative values and significance of changes in different cortical regions varied. The main features of the EEG power-difference patterns were an increase in the power of the γ band over the entire cortex, a bilateral increase in the power of the β2 band in the temporal areas, and a decrease in the power of the α2 and α1 bands over a large part of the cortical surface. In the state of retrieval, synchronization in the γ- and β2 bands and desynchronization in the α2 band were significantly stronger than in the state of encoding. In the α1 band, desynchronization was more pronounced in the state of encoding than in the state of retrieval. The results are discussed in combination with the available data of the EEG studies of different types of memory.  相似文献

With the advancement of contemporary techniques for studies of high-frequency electroencephalograms (EEGs), possible contamination of the EEG with the electromyogram (EMG) of pericranial muscles has raised more and more concern. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate if certain EEG correlates of mental activities can be revealed in a high-frequency scalp EEG in spite of EMG contamination. Nineteen healthy women who performed similar test tasks before and after cosmetic injections of Dysport in various facial regions for reduction of the activity of facial muscles took part in the study. Inductions of emotional states with different valences, memory storing, and extraction of verbal information were used in the test tasks. The default state of rest was examined as well. During performance of the tasks, parallel registrations of the EEG from the scalp surface (19 channels) and EMG from several facial muscles (6 channels) were carried out. Changes in the spectral power in β2 and low γ frequency bands (18–40 Hz) in EEG- and EMG-derivations after Dysport injections were analyzed. Changes in the spectral power in the same bands in pairwise comparisons for the test tasks before and after Dysport injections were also analyzed separately. It was demonstrated that Dysport injections lead to reduction of the EMG power in areas of the injections and to reduction of EEG power in the frontal and temporal derivations. However, the EEG-correlates revealed when comparing different test tasks remained qualitatively invariable as for after and before Disport injections. These facts confirm that EMG makes a noticeable contribution to the electric activity registered from the scalp in the frequency ranges greater than 18 Hz. At the same time, one can see that at least in certain experimental situations the influence of EMG does not make impossible identification of EEG-correlates of mental activity with EEG registration from the head surface at least in the β2 and low γ frequency bands (18–40 Hz).  相似文献

Changes in EEG power and coherence were analyzed in 117 subjects during the performance of the creative task of finishing well-known proverbs in a new way, so as to change, if possible, their meaning, and the noncreative task of recalling the original (well-known) version of the end of each proverb. A characteristic feature of the creative task was that proverbs and sayings are stereotypes fixed in a memory matrix. During the task performance, the EEG was recorded in 19 derivations according to the international 10–20 system. Performance of the creative task was accompanied by a highly significant and reproducible increase in the power of the γ and β2 EEG frequency bands, as well as a less pronounced decrease in the power of the ? band in the central and parietoccipital cortical areas. In addition, the performance of the creative task was also characterized by an increase in the EEG coherence in the α2, β2, and γ bands. No gender-related differences were found in the patterns of EEG changes.  相似文献

We studied the dynamics of spectral coherence characteristics of the EEG θ-, β1-, and β2-activity and the heart rate variability (HRV) in subjects performing cognitive tests. We found an association between the HRV parameters in the process of cognitive activity and the coherence of potentials in the EEG θ-, β1-, and β2-bands. The heart rate parameters in the baseline state and during the test performance best correlated with the levels of the right-hemispheric coherence of potentials in the θ-, β1-, and β2-bands of the baseline EEG (eyes closed). The higher coherence levels corresponded to lower values of the mean time of RR intervals (RRNN), coefficient of variation (CV), total power (TP), the power of the high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) components in the HRV spectrum. During the performance of the test, higher coherence values in the EEG θ-bands with the focus in the right temporal lead corresponded to higher LF/HF values reflecting the predominance of sympathetic effects on heart rate.  相似文献

Independent component analysis (ICA) of 19-channel background EEG was performed in 111 patients with the early signs of depressive disorders and in 526 healthy subjects. The power spectra of the independent components were compared in the depressive patients and in healthy subjects at the eyes closed and eyes opened states. Statistically significant differences between the groups were detected in three frequency bands: θ (4–7.5 Hz), α (7.5–14 Hz), and β (14–20 Hz). Increased θ and α activities in parietal and occipital derivations of depressive patients may have been caused by a reduced cortical activity in the projection of these derivation. Diffuse enhancement of the β activity may be correlated with anxiety symptoms that are pronounced in the clinical picture of depressive disorders at early stages of the disease. ICA used to compare quantitative EEG parameters in different groups of patients and in healthy persons makes it possible to localize the differences more accurately than the traditional analysis of EEG spectra.  相似文献

Changes in the power and coherence of the β2 EEG band (18.5–30 Hz) were studied in subjects performing creative tasks under the conditions of emotional induction of different valence and without it. EEGs were recorded in subjects instructed to think up, within a limited time, the largest possible number of original definitions, differing in meaning, of emotionally positive, negative, and neutral nouns using additional words that were selected for them from another or the same semantic field. Significant changes in EEG power and coherence were found in the β2 band. The performance of the creative task without emotional induction led to a local decrease in β2 EEG power in the left frontotemporal area and a diffuse decrease in the coherence of the same band in most cortical zones. Emotional induction had a considerably stronger effect on the state of the cortex than the creative tasks used in the study: positive emotional induction caused a generalized increase in the power and coherence of the β2 EEG band, while negative emotional induction caused a diffuse decrease in the power of this band over the parietal, central, and temporal cortical areas.  相似文献

Brain’s alpha activity and alpha responses belong to major electrical signals that are related to sensory/cognitive signal processing. The present study aims to analyze the spontaneous alpha activity and visual evoked alpha response in drug free euthymic bipolar patients. Eighteen DSM-IV euthymic bipolar patients (bipolar I n = 15, bipolar II n = 3) and 18 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Patients needed to be euthymic at least for 4 weeks and psychotrop free for at least 2 weeks. Spontaneous EEG (4 min eyes closed, 4 min eyes open) and evoked alpha response upon application of simple visual stimuli were analyzed. EEG was recorded at 30 positions. The digital FFT-based power spectrum analysis was performed for spontaneous eyes closed and eyes open conditions and the response power spectrum was also analyzed for simple visual stimuli. In the analysis of spontaneous EEG, the ANOVA on alpha responses revealed significant results for groups (F(1,34) = 8.703; P < 0.007). Post-hoc comparisons showed that spontaneous EEG alpha power of healthy subjects was significantly higher than the spontaneous EEG alpha power of euthymic patients. Furthermore, visual evoked alpha power of healthy subjects was significantly higher than visual evoked alpha power of euthymic patients (F(1,34) = 4.981; P < 0.04). Decreased alpha activity in spontaneous EEG is an important pathological EEG finding in euthymic bipolar patients. Together with an evident decrease in evoked alpha responses, the findings may lead to a new pathway in search of biological correlates of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder.  相似文献

Analysis of EEG spectral power values and quantitative clinical scores of depressive conditions has been carried out in the dynamics of the treatment of 40 patients with endogenous depression, with the main goal to study the neurophysiological correlates and to search for possible predictors of therapeutic outcome. The reduction of depressive symptoms by the end of the treatment course was associated with EEG signs of improvement of the brain’s functional state. Significant correlations have been revealed between the EEG narrow-band spectral power values and clinical scores. As well, significant correlations have been revealed between some initial (before the beginning of the treatment) EEG parameters and quantitative clinical scores at the initial stage of remission. The values of EEG β1 and β2 spectral power appeared to be predictors, while initially larger values of EEG spectral power were associated with the high manifestation of residual depressive symptoms after the treatment. The results support the basic views on the brain’s mechanisms of various aspects of depressive disorders and reveal the possible neurophysiological predictors of the efficacy of the treatment of endogenous depression.  相似文献

We studied peculiarities of the spectral characteristics of EEG in 111 healthy adult subjects of both sexes. The levels of situative anxiety (anxiety state) and personal anxiety were estimated using the Spielberger–Khanin test system. To estimate anxiety-related properties of the personality, Cattel’s technique 16 PF (form А) was used. Estimates of situative anxiety demonstrated only two cases of positive correlation with the spectral power density (SPD) of EEG rhythms (SPDs of the beta2 rhythm in the right-hemisphere temporal and occipital regions; recording with the eyes open). Estimates of personal anxiety positively correlated with the SPDs of the beta1 and (especially) beta2 EEG rhythms. Under conditions with the eyes open, the number of significant correlations was greater, and correlations themselves were tighter than with the eyes closed. The closest correlations of the estimates of personal anxiety with the SPDs of the beta rhythm were found in frontal and central leads of both hemispheres and in parietal and occipital loci of the right hemisphere. Only a single case of correlation of the alpha rhythm SPD with personal anxiety (negative correlation, a parietal lead in the left hemisphere) was found. At the same time, rather numerous correlations of the alpha rhythm expression with an index congeneric to anxiety, the C factor by the Cattel’s questionnaire (emotional stability/instability), were found. Thus, the intense beta EEG rhythm can be considered an electrographic correlate of high situative and personal anxieties. At the same time, the alpha rhythm power correlates with the emotional stability of the individual. We suppose that persons with a well-developed alpha rhythm are characterized by active and stable functioning of the cerebral dopaminergic system; this simultaneously serves as a pre-requisite of high emotional stability and social adaptability.  相似文献

Spatial EEG synchronization was studied using mean EEG coherences in 57 subjects in a resting state with the eyes open, during memorization of verbal bilingual semantic pairs (Latin and Russian), and during retrieval (monitoring) of the learned information. Statistical comparison of the EEG spectral power in the frequency bands θ, α 1, α2, β1, β2, and γ showed that induction of the states of memorization and retrieval of the verbal information resulted in multiple significant increases in the mean coherence (spatial synchronization) as compared to the state of rest. These increases were significantly higher in the state of retrieval than in the state of memorization. Such changes simultaneously occurred in different frequency bands and over the entire cortex. The highest relative augmentations of coherence with the highest significance estimates were observed in long-distance derivation pairs involving the temporal areas or combining the anterofrontal and frontal derivations with the parietal and occipital ones. The results are discussed in combination with data obtained in the same study for changes in EEG local synchronization and reported earlier. The intense rearrangements of the bioelectrical activity of the cortex may be determined both by the effect of cognitively specific mechanisms of encoding-decoding of information in the memory system and by a cognitively nonspecific modulating system of the brain.  相似文献

Brain bioelectrical activity was studied in 38 and 34 subjects with high and low levels of anxiety, respectively, by means of toposelective mapping of EEG spectral power and recording of P300 endogenous event-related auditory evoked potentials (EPs). Analysis of EEG spectra demonstrated, in the subjects with a high level of trait anxiety, a higher power of β1 oscillations in the central-parietal areas of both hemispheres and the occipital area of the right hemisphere, as well as a higher power of θ and α oscillations in the frontal areas of both hemispheres and the central-parietal area of the left hemisphere. The occipital-frontal gradient of the spectral power of these rhythmic EEG components was altered in subjects with a high level of trait anxiety. Comparison of P300 cognitive auditory EPs in the subjects with high anxiety and in the control group showed that, in the former, the P300 EP amplitude and the habituation distortion (dishabituation) of the P300 EP amplitude were significantly higher in both hemispheres. This indicates that, at a high level of anxiety, the active directed attention was disturbed, which is confirmed by the results of neuropsychological examination, demonstrating reduced selectivity, concentration, and stability of attention in the Münsterberg test and Schulte’s test. The results of electrophysiological examination suggest that the malfunction of regulatory brain modulating systems is an important neurophysiological mechanism of attention pathology and disturbed adaptation in subjects with a high level of trait anxiety.  相似文献

Changes in spatial organization of EEG activity were analyzed in 44 humans during active 1-h hyperventilation using cyclic or circular breath (CB) technique similar to rebirthing breath technique. The dynamics of different indices was recorded each 5 min (using 12 time slots). A double-humped pattern of changes in spatial organization indices (linear processes) and spatial disorder (nonlinear processes) of biopotentials: an initial decrease within 1 to 20–30 min and a second one from 35–40 min to the end of session. A complex dynamics of spatial frequency processes (coherence and spectral power of biopotentials) with different pattern of changes within narrow frequency EEG bands. The dynamics of the spatial organization of EEG indices proved to depend on the intensity of hyperventilation-induced paroxysmal activity. The indices of spatial synchronization and disorder of biopotentials as well as low frequency β-activity (16.00–22.50 Hz) decreased more at the background of high rather than low paroxysmal activity, while the low frequency components (Δ and Θ) and high frequency α-activity (11.25–12.50 Hz) increased more. The obtained data are considered in terms of specific consciousness state induced by CB.  相似文献

The stability of the EEG during eyes closed and eyes open were tested by the statistical method. The EEG records of 25 s were segmented into ten 2.5 s intervals for each state. The mean and variance and power spectra (2.5 to 17.5 Hz at resolution of 2.5 Hz) were calculated for each segment of 2.5 s interval. Thus, the sequences of mean values, variances and power at each frequency component were obtained for 25 s epoch. The stationarity of these sequences were tested by the run test and the trend test. The stationarity of mean, variance and power spectra were not rejected for 25 s records by any of two tests. In the records of 50 s, about 10–20% of records tested were rejected. The nonstationarity of the EEG appeared for 50 s records. This means that the EEG during period the eyes were closed, or opened can be regarded as stationary over time period as long as at least 25 s.  相似文献
