Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were followed from egg to smoltification using genetic analysis to identify individuals and to link observations from pre‐ and post first feeding. Egg size and hatch timing significantly influenced alevin size at first feed but neither egg size, hatch timing or alevin sizes were correlated to size, condition factor or smolt status post first feed. In a hatchery environment the potential advantage gained by early hatching, larger alevin does not persist after first feeding. Different physiological and genetic complexes appear to influence growth in these two distinct phases of the Atlantic salmon's life‐cycle.  相似文献

Support for the theory of ecological speciation requires evidence for ecological divergence between species which directly or indirectly causes reproductive isolation. This study investigates effects of ecological vs. genetic disparity of parental species on the presence of endogenous selection (deformation and mortality rates) and potential sources of exogenous selection (growth rates and hatch timing) on hybrids. Hybrid embryonic development is analysed in a common‐garden full‐sib cross of three species belonging to two different ecotypes within the Coregonus lavaretus species flock in the central Alpine region of Europe. Although hatch timing was similar across the three species, embryonic growth rates and egg sizes differed between ecotypes. This led to a mismatch between embryonic growth rate and egg size in hybrid crosses that reveals epistasis between the maternal and embryonic genomes and transgressive hatch times that were asynchronous with control crosses. A strong constraint of egg size to embryo size at late development was also evident. We argue that this demonstrates potential for coadaptation of a maternal trait (egg size) with offspring growth rate to be an important source of selection against hybridization between ecotypes with different egg sizes. Implications for the measurement and quantification of early life‐history traits affected by this additive relationship, such as hatch day and larval size, are also discussed.  相似文献

This study examined fertilization rates, survival and early life‐trait differences of pure farm, wild and first generation (F1) hybrid origin embryos after crossing farm and wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. Results show that despite a trend towards higher in vitro fertilization success for wild females, differences in fertilization success in river water are not significantly different among crosses. In a hatchery environment, wild females' progeny (pure wild and hybrids with wild maternal parent) hatched 7–11 days earlier than pure farm crosses and hybrids with farm maternal parents. In addition, pure wild progeny had higher total lengths (LT) at hatch than pure farm crosses and hybrids. Directions in trait differences need to be tested in a river environment, but results clearly show the maternal influence on early stages beyond egg‐size differences. Differences in LT were no longer significant at 70 days post hatch (shortly after the onset of exogenous feeding) showing the need to investigate later developmental stages to better assess somatic growth disparities due to genetic differences. Higher mortality rates of the most likely hybrids (farm female × wild male hybrids) at egg and fry stages and their delayed hatch suggest that these F1 hybrids might be less likely to survive the early larval stages than wild stocks.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that the genetic divergence and reproductive incompat- ibility between closely related species and/or populations is often viewed as an important step toward speciation. In this study, sexual compatibility in crosses between the southern XS population and the northern TA population of the polyandrous cabbage beetle Co- laphellus bowringi was investigated by testing their mating preferences, mating latency, copulation duration, and reproductive performances of post-mating. In choice mating ex- periments, the percentages ofmatings were significantly higher in intra-population crosses than in inter-population crosses. Both isolation index (/) and index of pair sexual isolation (/PSi) indicated partial mating incompatibility or assortative mating in crosses between the two different geographical populations. In single pair mating experiments, XS females in inter-population crosses mated significantly later and copulated significantly shorter than those in intra-population crosses. However, TA females in inter-population crosses mated significantly earlier and copulated longer than those in intra-population crosses, suggesting that larger XS males may enhance heterotypic mating. The lifetime fecundity was highest in XS homotypic matings, lowest in TA homotypic matings, and intermedi- ate in heterotypic rnatings between their parents. The inter-population crosses resulted in significantly lower egg hatching rate and shorter female longevity than intra-population crosses. These results demonstrated that there exist some incompatibilities in premating, postmating-prezygotic, and postzygotic stages between the southern XS population and northern TA population of the cabbage beetle Colaphellus bowringi.  相似文献

Systematic characterization of genetic and molecular mechanisms in the formation of hybrid sterility is of fundamental importance in understanding reproductive isolation and speciation. Using ultra‐high‐density genetic maps, 43 single‐locus quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and 223 digenic interactions for embryo‐sac, pollen, and spikelet fertility are depicted from three crosses between representative varieties of japonica and two varietal groups of indica, which provide an extensive archive for investigating the genetic basis of reproductive isolation in rice. Ten newly detected single‐locus QTLs for inter‐ and intra‐subspecific fertility are identified. Three loci for embryo‐sac fertility are detected in both Nip × ZS97 and Nip × MH63 crosses, whereas QTLs for pollen fertility are not in common between the two crosses thus leading to fertility variation. Five loci responsible for fertility and segregation distortion are observed in the ZS97 × MH63 cross. The importance of two‐locus interactions on fertility are quantified in the whole genome, which identify that three types of interaction contribute to fertility reduction in the hybrid. These results construct the genetic architecture with respect to various forms of reproductive barriers in rice, which have significant implications in utilization of inter‐subspecific heterosis along with improvement in the fertility of indica–indica hybrids at single‐ and multi‐locus level.  相似文献

In interspecific crosses, a mismatch in internal physiological conditions between two species can reduce sperm viability in the interval from insemination to fertilization, leading to gametic isolation. Two closely related Japanese phytophagous ladybird beetles, Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata and H. pustulosa, show several isolating barriers, including reduction in the number of heterospecific sperm in the female reproductive tract and low egg‐hatching rates in interspecific matings. However, the mechanisms of these two potential isolating barriers and the association between them are unknown. Here we investigated temporal changes in the number of sperm stored in the female reproductive tract and egg‐hatching rates in inter‐ and intraspecific crosses between these species. Although the number of sperm decreased after both inter‐ and intraspecific crosses, the reduction was more drastic in inter‐ than in intraspecific crosses for females of both species. Most of the sperm reduction occurred early on, during sperm transfer from the bursa copulatrix to the paired ampullae of the common oviduct (the sperm storage organs). These two species also demonstrated stably low egg‐hatching rates in interspecific crosses. Since the degree and timing of the sperm reduction did not correlate with egg‐hatching rates, the reduction in heterospecific sperm in interspecific crosses may not directly cause the low hatching rates. These two isolating barriers could be different expressions of the physiological mismatch and/or genetic incompatibility between gametes of these species.  相似文献

A factorial mating design was employed in which five males were mated to each of five females in each of two stocks for both pink and chum salmon. The resulting embryos and alevins were incubated at constant water temperatures of 4, 8, and 16 degrees C for pink salmon and 3, 8, and 15 degrees C for chum salmon. Variation among families in alevin and fry survival rates, hatching, button-up time, length, and weight was the least at 8 degrees C. Heritability of traits directly correlated with fitness, such as survival rates and button-up time, was low at all temperatures (h2 less than or equal to 0.25). Maternal effects could account for a substantial portion of the variation in alevin and fry size characters. Nonadditive genetic variance accounted for more of the variation in fry size characters than in those of alevins. Negative genetic correlations were observed between embryo survival and subsequent alevin size and between hatching time and subsequent alevin and fry size. Genotype-temperature interactions could underlie a substantial amount of phenotypic variation in the developmental characters examined for both species.  相似文献

The δ13C, δ15N and δ34S isotope values of newly emerged, brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis alevins (free‐swimming individuals beginning exogenous feeding) were examined to determine if progeny of anadromous female spawners could be detected and their contributions to reproduction assessed in river systems with mixed migration strategies. Separation of anadromous and freshwater resident and immigrant sources of progeny could be detected primarily using δ13C values before alevins reached a size of 28 mm fork length and c . 20 days after exogenous feeding began. Among 10 populations, the contributions of anadromous females ranged from 0 to 42% of newly emerged alevins. Correlations between anadromous contributions and estimates of total brook trout density and alevin production were unexpectedly negative.  相似文献

Ovarian self‐incompatibility, including pre‐ and post‐zygotic reactions, is a complex mechanism for which we still lack many details relating to its function and significance. The joint presence of ovarian self‐incompatibility with style polymorphism is a rare combination that is found in the genus Narcissus. Usually, style polymorphic species have heteromorphic (diallelic and linked to style length locus) incompatibility, which prevents fertilization between individuals of the same morph, thereby helping to maintain equal proportions of floral morphs in populations. However, when present, self‐incompatibility in Narcissus is not linked to style polymorphism and cross‐fertilization within each morph is possible. Hence, self‐incompatibility in Narcissus is of particular interest when attempting to unravel the nature of the rejection reaction and aiming to assess possible cryptic differences in the fertilization process in intra‐ and inter‐morph crosses, which might ultimately explain the wide variation of morph‐ratio in the field. We examined the breeding system of Narcissus papyraceus, a style‐dimorphic species that has biased morph ratios in most of its populations. We studied pollen‐tube growth in the pistil and ovule fate after experimentally controlled hand pollinations. The growth of pollen tubes in self‐ and intra‐ and inter‐morph crosses was similar up to the point of micropyle penetration in both morphs but, subsequently, a pre‐zygotic failure appeared to affect male and female gametophytes in selfed pistils. A high proportion of ovules from self‐pollinated flowers showed signs of collapse and self‐pollen tubes were blocked or behaved abnormally before entering the embryo sac. Self‐incompatibility was stronger in the long‐styled morph than in the short‐styled morph. We did not find any conclusive sign of differential functioning between intra‐ and inter‐morph cross‐pollinations in any morph. These results enable us to rule out the possible effects of pollen–pistil interactions in N. papyraceus as a cause of morph‐ratio biases and confirm the exceptional nature of the self‐incompatibility mechanism in this polymorphic species. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 177 , 629–643.  相似文献

1. The effects of low pH water on embryogenesis and vitellogenesis in kokanee and sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) were investigated. Eggs were exposed to low pH from fertilization to 45 days post-median hatch or to an episodic exposure at pH 4.0. Adult kokanee were also exposed to low pH just prior to ovulation and spawning. 2. The most sensitive stages of development during chronic or episodic exposure to low pH were early embryonic development and newly-hatched alevins. 3. Incubation of eggs at low pH caused a lower median survival, delayed hatching, higher alevin mortality and reduced the efficiency of yolk conversion to tissue of yolk-sac alevins. Those effects were more pronounced when the eggs were fertilized at low pH. 4. Exposure of sexually mature kokanee salmon to acidified water reduced egg and alevin survival, delayed embryo hatching and decreased the percent hatch. Those effects were more pronounced when their eggs were incubated at low pH.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization between closely related mammalian species, including various species of the genus Mus, is commonly associated with abnormal growth of the placenta and hybrid foetuses, a phenomenon known as hybrid placental dysplasia (HPD). The role of HPD in speciation is anticipated but still poorly understood. Here, we studied placental and foetal growth in F1 crosses between four inbred mouse strains derived from two house mouse subspecies, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus. These subspecies are in the early stage of speciation and still hybridize in nature. In accordance with the maternal–foetal genomic conflict hypothesis, we found different parental influences on placental and foetal development, with placental weight most affected by the father's body weight and foetal weight by the mother's body weight. After removing the effects of parents’ body weight, we did not find any significant differences in foetal or placental weights between intra‐subspecific and inter‐subspecific F1 crosses. Nevertheless, we found that the variability in placental weight in inter‐subspecific crosses is linked to the X chromosome, similarly as for HPD in interspecific mouse crosses. Our results suggest that maternal–foetal genomic conflict occurs in the house mouse system, but has not yet diverged sufficiently to cause abnormalities in placental and foetal growth in inter‐subspecific crosses. HPD is thus unlikely to contribute to speciation in the house mouse system. However, we cannot rule out that it might have contributed to other speciation events in the genus Mus, where differences in the levels of polyandry exist between the species.  相似文献

  • Variation in flowering phenology is common in natural populations, and is expected to be, together with inter‐mate distance, an important driver of effective pollen dispersal. In populations composed of plants with temporally separated sexual phases (i.e. dichogamous or heterodichogamous populations), pollen‐mediated gene flow is assumed to reflect phenological overlap between complementary sexual phases. In this study, we conducted paternity analyses to test this hypothesis in the temporally dimorphic tree Acer opalus.
  • We performed spatially explicit analyses based on categorical and fractional paternity assignment, and included tree size, pair‐wise genetic relatedness and morph type as additional predictors. Because differences between morphs in flowering phenology may also influence pollination distances, we modelled separate pollen dispersal kernels for the two morphs.
  • Extended phenological overlap between male and female phases (mainly associated with inter‐morph crosses) resulted in higher siring success after accounting for the effects of genetic relatedness, morph type and tree size, while reduced phenological overlap (mainly associated with intra‐morph crosses) resulted in longer pollination distances achieved. Siring success also increased in larger trees.
  • Mating patterns could not be predicted by phenology alone. However, as heterogeneity in flowering phenology was the single morph‐specific predictor of siring success, it is expected to be key in maintaining the temporal dimorphism in A. opalus, by promoting not only a prevalent pattern of inter‐morph mating, but also long‐distance pollination resulting from intra‐morph mating events.

At least four races of charr occur in Windermere, the largest natural lake in England: north basin and south basin autumn spawners, north basin and south basin spring spawners. This study examines racial differences between eggs and juveniles, and relates juvenile size and survival to egg size. There were no major differences between races for egg incubation times and the percentage of eggs hatching successfully, the latter being high (mean values 76–96%) with a negligible proportion of abnormal alevins (<0.8%). Although there were no significant differences in the lengths of the female parents, both eggs and alevins were significantly larger for the autumn spawners than the spring spawners. Size differences in alevins, especially live weight, were positively related to egg size but not female parent size. Mean percentage survival for juveniles attaining the independent feeding stage was higher for the progeny of autumn spawners (32%) than spring spawners (3%). Racial differences in the egg and alevin stages therefore appear to have a significant effect on subsequent survival, and could be ultimately responsible for the relatively small proportion of spring spawners (only 4–6%) in the Windermere population of charr.  相似文献

Variability between Aedes aegypti populations in north Queensland, Australia, has the potential to impact the successful implementation of new population replacement mosquito releases for dengue control. Four Ae. aegypti colonies originating from different locations (Cairns, Mareeba, Innisfail, and Charters Towers), along with one F1 field‐derived population from Cairns, were inter‐crossed to determine any incompatibilities in copulation, insemination, and production of viable offspring. Greater copulation and insemination rates were observed when males recently introduced from the wild (‘Cairns‐Wild’ population) were mated with long‐term laboratory females. Egg viability rates for all crosses ranged from 90.2–98.2%, with no significant differences observed between crosses. Greater egg production was seen in some populations, and when corrected for wing‐length, egg production was greatest in a Mareeba x Innisfail cross (19.55 eggs/mm wing length) and lowest for the Charters Towers intra‐population cross (14.35 eggs/mm). Additionally, behavioral differences were observed between laboratory and wild mosquitoes from the Cairns location, suggesting possible laboratory conditioning. Finally, despite controlled larval rearing conditions, size differences between populations existed with Charters Towers mosquitoes consistently smaller than the other populations. The spread of genes or bacterial symbionts between these populations is unlikely to be hindered by pre‐existing reproductive barriers.  相似文献

In an experiment on the effect of zooplankton density on feeding behaviour and prey size selection in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) alevins, total behavioural activity (feeding, social, ambiguous) was positively related to prey abundance up to a density of 350 items 1?1, after which activity peaked. Feeding error (missed attacks and/or rejected ingestions) increased with prey density. The likelihood that an alevin would attack an item upon which it had binocularly fixed (no. bites/no. visual fixes) peaked at densities of 270 items 1?1 and then declined. Feeding success (no. ingestions per bite or per fixation) also peaked and then declined. Changes in success were reflected in total number of items found in the gut. At high prey abundance (608 items 1?1) only 0.5 – 0.9 mm copepods were preferred components of alevin diets. Over all prey densities, preferred sizes of cladocerans and copepods did not overlap. These results may reflect a perceptual constraint (at high zooplankton densities) on alevin feeding behaviour.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) alevins move away from the redd predominantly at night time, suggesting that light level is the controlling factor releasing activity. However, the exact relationship between Light level and alevin activity is unknown, so a series of artificial redds was used to monitor alevin movements under various night time incident light levels. Five experimental redds and two controls were run over a period of 3 years. Combining the results gave a significant negative correlation between the numbers of salmon alevins moving away from redds on light nights and light level. This behaviour was interpreted as a negative photoresponse since the frequency of alevin movement away from the redd was dependent on the light intensity. Two possible explanations as to why alevins may react in this way to light level were considered. Firstly, the behaviour could have evolved to ensure that alevins only move away from the redd when they are least likely to be caught by a predator or secondly, retinal developmental differences between alevins could have led to the observed behaviour.  相似文献

There is growing appreciation that the ecological factors which impact on rates of pollen transfer can contribute significantly to reproductive trait evolution in plants. In heterostylous species, several studies support Darwin's claim that the reciprocal positions of stigmas and anthers enhance inter‐morph mating in comparison to intra‐morph mating and thus the maintenance of the polymorphism. In this study, we evaluate the relative importance of intra‐morph and inter‐morph pollen transfers in Narcissus assoanus, a species with dimorphic variation in style length but non‐reciprocity of anther positions. This stigma‐height dimorphism represents a transitional stage in theoretical models of the evolution of distyly. Seed set variation on recipient plants with donor plants of a single morph in experimental arrays in a natural population illustrate that inter‐morph cross‐pollination is more efficient that intra‐morph cross‐pollination as a result of high rates of pollen transfer from long‐styled to short‐styled plants. The observed rates of pollen transfer satisfy the theoretical conditions for the establishment of a stigma‐height dimorphism in an ancestral monomorphic long‐styled population in pollen‐limited situations. These results provide experimental evidence for the Darwinian hypothesis that enhanced inter‐morph cross‐pollination facilitates not only the maintenance of heterostyly but also the establishment of transitional forms implicated in the evolution of this polymorphism.  相似文献

Testicular development was followed in juvenile sea trout (Salmo trutta morpha trutta L.) stocked in a river near Szczecin, Poland in 1992. Fish age was between 3 and 6.5 months post‐hatch. Fish were sampled monthly. Sex‐dependent differences in gonad structure and timing of their differentiation were observed after dissection under light microscope. In 3‐month‐old fry, when female gonads were differentiating (morphologically and cytologically), gonads of potential males remained undifferentiated. Development of a gonad into a male was primarily indicated by the formation of seminiferous tubules (lobules). In the sea trout under study, the lobules formed between the fourth and fifth month post‐hatch (July–August) (fork length >5.6 cm). There were no significant differences in body fork length between fish with and without lobules, although mean length of the former was higher. Early spermatogenesis began once the type B spermatogonia appeared. The timing of their appearance differed widely among individuals. Type B spermatogonia were found for the first time in a 5‐month‐old male (late August). Spermatocytes and cells of subsequent stages appeared in an incompletely matured 6.5‐month‐old male as ‘attempted spermatogenesis’ (fork length = 8.8 cm). Most examined males remained immature, their germ cells not having passed the type A spermatogonium level. In 6.5‐month‐old alevins, no significant differences in fish size between individuals beginning spermatogenesis (stage II) and those at stage I were detected, although those at stage II were longer. As the male gonad structures were forming, the quantitative gonad parameters were gradually increasing, even when referring to the unit area; only the gonocyte size gradually decreased. Generally, each observed monthly or bimonthly difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Mammalian hybrids often show abnormal growth, indicating that developmental inviability may play an important role in mammalian speciation. Yet, it is unclear if this recurrent phenotype reflects a common genetic basis. Here, we describe extreme parent‐of‐origin‐dependent growth in hybrids from crosses between two species of dwarf hamsters, Phodopus campbelli and Phodopus sungorus. One cross type resulted in massive placental and embryonic overgrowth, severe developmental defects, and maternal death. Embryos from the reciprocal cross were viable and normal sized, but adult hybrid males were relatively small. These effects are strikingly similar to patterns from several other mammalian hybrids. Using comparative sequence data from dwarf hamsters and several other hybridizing mammals, we argue that extreme hybrid growth can contribute to reproductive isolation during the early stages of species divergence. Next, we tested if abnormal growth in hybrid hamsters was associated with disrupted genomic imprinting. We found no association between imprinting status at several candidate genes and hybrid growth, though two interacting genes involved in embryonic growth did show reduced expression in overgrown hybrids. Collectively, our study indicates that growth‐related hybrid inviability may play an important role in mammalian speciation but that the genetic underpinnings of these phenotypes remain unresolved.  相似文献

In angiosperms, interspecific crosses often display hybrid incompatibilities that are manifested as under‐proliferation or over‐proliferation of endosperm. Recent analyses using crosses between Arabidopsis thaliana and its related species with different ploidy levels have shown that interspecific hybridization causes delayed developmental transition and increased mitotic activity in the endosperm. In this study, we investigated endosperm development in interspecific crosses between diploid Oryza species. In a cross between female O. sativa and male O. punctata, we found that the hybrid endosperm was reduced in size and this cross was associated with precocious developmental transition. By contrast, the cross between O. sativa and O. longistaminata generated enlarged hybrid endosperm at the mid‐point of seed development and this cross was associated with delayed developmental transition. Subsequently, the hybrid endosperm displayed a shriveled appearance at the seed maturation stage. We found that the accumulation of storage products and the expression patterns of several marker genes were also altered in the hybrid endosperm. By contrast, the rate of syncytial mitotic nuclear divisions was not significantly affected. The gene OsMADS87 showed a maternal origin‐specific expression pattern in rice endosperm, in contrast to its Arabidopsis homologue PHERES1, which shows paternal origin‐specific expression. OsMADS87 expression was decreased or increased depending on the type of developmental transition change in the hybrid rice endosperm. Our results indicate that one of the interspecies hybridization barriers in Oryza endosperm is mediated by precocious or delayed developmental alterations and de‐regulation of OsMADS87, without change to the rate of syncytial mitotic nuclear division in the hybrid endosperm.  相似文献
