The aim of the present study was to elucidate the adaptive and de-adaptive nature of human running on a split-belt treadmill. The degree of adaptation and de-adaptation was compared with those in walking by calculating the antero-posterior component of the ground reaction force (GRF). Adaptation to walking and running on a split-belt resulted in a prominent asymmetry in the movement pattern upon return to the normal belt condition, while the two components of the GRF showed different behaviors depending on the gaits. The anterior braking component showed prominent adaptive and de-adaptive behaviors in both gaits. The posterior propulsive component, on the other hand, exhibited such behavior only in running, while that in walking showed only short-term aftereffect (lasting less than 10 seconds) accompanied by largely reactive responses. These results demonstrate a possible difference in motor strategies (that is, the use of reactive feedback and adaptive feedforward control) by the central nervous system (CNS) for split-belt locomotor adaptation between walking and running. The present results provide basic knowledge on neural control of human walking and running as well as possible strategies for gait training in athletic and rehabilitation scenes.  相似文献

The physiological mechanisms that determined the maintenance of human physical performance in the absence of gravity are poorly understood. The article presents the results of analysis of locomotor training characteristics of 18 cosmonauts who participated in long-term spaceflights at the International Space Station (ISS) with the duration from 175 to 201 days. The level of cosmonauts' physical performance during spaceflight was determined by the results of a locomotor test with a stepwise increasing load. The vertical components of ground reaction forces were recorded for different types of locomotion using load cells in the BD-2 treadmill. The results of determination of changes in the level of cosmonauts' physical performance during long-term spaceflight have provided the data on a higher prophylactic efficacy of locomotor training performed with an axial load of over 64% of the body weight compared to those performed with an axial load of less than 61% of the body weight. The higher countermeasure efficacy of locomotor training in the first case may be due to an increase in the intensity of stimulation of the reference input and the strengthening of the response of systems providing autonomic muscle activity.  相似文献

The two major modes of locomotion in humans, walking and running, may be regarded as a function of different speed (walking as slower and running as faster). Recent results using motor learning tasks in humans, as well as more direct evidence from animal models, advocate for independence in the neural control mechanisms underlying different locomotion tasks. In the current study, we investigated the possible independence of the neural mechanisms underlying human walking and running. Subjects were tested on a split-belt treadmill and adapted to walking or running on an asymmetrically driven treadmill surface. Despite the acquisition of asymmetrical movement patterns in the respective modes, the emergence of asymmetrical movement patterns in the subsequent trials was evident only within the same modes (walking after learning to walk and running after learning to run) and only partial in the opposite modes (walking after learning to run and running after learning to walk) (thus transferred only limitedly across the modes). Further, the storage of the acquired movement pattern in each mode was maintained independently of the opposite mode. Combined, these results provide indirect evidence for independence in the neural control mechanisms underlying the two locomotive modes.  相似文献

Cluster analysis of the following parameters was performed in 13 cosmonauts: the duration (min), amount (m), and speed (km/h) of physical locomotor exercise (PLE) including running, and total locomotion (running + walking). These activities were the part of the program of long-term missions on board the International Space Station. The cosmonauts were divided into three groups, which included two, five, and six subjects, respectively. The parameters of the PLE amount and speed significantly increased (p < 0.03) when going from the first to the third group. There was no significant difference in the duration of PLE between the groups (p < 0.125). It is concluded that cluster analysis is an appropriate method for fitness evaluation of cosmonauts during long-term space flights.  相似文献

Head orientation in the sagittal plane was assessed before and the second and sixth days after a prolonged microgravity exposure (6 months) in 7 astronauts, which were instructed to execute various locomotor movements (stair ascent, jump down and level walk). Crewmembers systematically flexed down the head when they executed the locomotion the second day post-flight compared to the pre-flight walk. Cephalic orientation was normally positioned when movements was performed the sixth day after Earth re-entry. This head flexion may reflect a strategy used by cosmonauts to increase the vestibular sensibility, and then improve the control of the dynamic equilibrium during locomotor movements. The high rate of re-adaptation indicated that cosmonauts rapidly recovered their normal walking capacities despite the prolonged microgravity exposure.  相似文献

Kinetic analysis of walking requires joint kinematics and ground reaction force (GRF) measurement, which are typically obtained from a force plate. GRF is difficult to measure in certain cases such as slope walking, stair climbing, and track running. Nevertheless, estimating GRF continues to be of great interest for simulating human walking. The purpose of the study was to develop reaction force models placed on the sole of the foot to estimate full GRF when only joint kinematics are provided (Type-I), and to estimate ground contact shear forces when both joint kinematics and foot pressure are provided (Type-II and Type-II-val). The GRF estimation models were attached to a commercial full body skeletal model using the AnyBody Modeling System, which has an inverse dynamics-based optimization solver. The anterior–posterior shear force and medial–lateral shear force could be estimated with approximate accuracies of 6% BW and 2% BW in all three methods, respectively. Vertical force could be estimated in the Type-I model with an accuracy of 13.75% BW. The accuracy of the force estimation was the highest during the mid-single-stance period with an average RMS for errors of 3.10% BW, 1.48% BW, and 7.48% BW for anterior–posterior force, medial–lateral force, and vertical force, respectively. The proposed GRF estimation models could predict full and partial GRF with high accuracy. The design of the contact elements of the proposed model should make it applicable to various activities where installation of a force measurement system is difficult, including track running and treadmill walking.  相似文献

Physical exercises (PE) constitute the most important part of the Russian countermeasure system which is proved to be highly successful in fighting negative effects of weightlessness on the physiological systems of the body. To control the intensity and volume of the workload and also specific features of the regimens used by cosmonauts during SF there were provided monthly 3-days recordings of cosmonaut training sessions with the subsequent downlinking of the obtained information to the ground control center. Additionally once a month cosmonauts performed a fitness test that was composed of 11 minutes of locomotion on the passive treadmill including slow, middle range and maximal running. The results of 3-days recordings and fitness test allowed to evaluate correctly effectiveness of PE protocols used by cosmonauts and to form recommendations for their corrections. The effectiveness of the onboard exercise program after SF was evaluated based on results of detailed studies of alterations that were recorded in different parts of sensory-motor system.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the neuromuscular locomotor system is optimized at a unique speed by examining the variability of the ground reaction force (GRF) pattern during walking in relation to different constant speeds. Ten healthy male subjects were required to walk on a treadmill at 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0 km/h. Three components [vertical (F(z)), anteroposterior (F(y)), and mediolateral (F(x)) force] of the GRF were independently measured for approximately 35 steps consecutively for each leg. To quantify the GRF pattern, five indexes (first and second peaks of F(z), first and second peaks of F(y), and F(x) peak) were defined. Coefficients of variation were calculated for these five indexes to evaluate the GRF variability for each walking speed. It became clear for first and second peaks of F(z) and F(x) peak that index variabilities increased in relation to increments in walking speed, whereas there was a speed (5.5-5.8 km/h) at which variability was minimum for first and second peaks of F(y), which were related to forward propulsion of the body. These results suggest that there is "an optimum speed" for the neuromuscular locomotor system but only for the propulsion control mechanism.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high-intensity locomotor training on knee extensor and flexor muscle activation and adaptability to increased body-weight (BW) support during walking in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Thirteen male patients with idiopathic PD and eight healthy participants were included. The PD patients completed an 8-week training program on a lower-body, positive-pressure treadmill. Knee extensor and flexor muscles activation during steady treadmill walking (3 km/h) were measured before, at the mid-point, and after training. Increasing BW support decreased knee extensor muscle activation (normalization) and increased knee flexor muscle activation (abnormal) in PD patients when compared to healthy participants. Training improved flexor peak muscle activation adaptability to increased (BW) support during walking in PD patients. During walking without BW support shorter knee extensor muscle off-activation time and increased relative peak muscle activation was observed in PD patients and did not improve with 8 weeks of training. In conclusion, patients with PD walked with excessive activation of the knee extensor and flexor muscles when compared to healthy participants. Specialized locomotor training may facilitate adaptive processes related to motor control of walking in PD patients.  相似文献

Implementing user-driven treadmill control in gait training programs for rehabilitation may be an effective means of enhancing motor learning and improving functional performance. This study aimed to determine the effect of a user-driven treadmill control scheme on walking speeds, anterior ground reaction forces (AGRF), and trailing limb angles (TLA) of healthy adults. Twenty-three participants completed a 10-m overground walking task to measure their overground self-selected (SS) walking speeds. Then, they walked at their SS and fastest comfortable walking speeds on an instrumented split-belt treadmill in its fixed speed and user-driven control modes. The user-driven treadmill controller combined inertial-force, gait parameter, and position based control to adjust the treadmill belt speed in real time. Walking speeds, peak AGRF, and TLA were compared among test conditions using paired t-tests (α = 0.05). Participants chose significantly faster SS and fast walking speeds in the user-driven mode than the fixed speed mode (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between the overground SS walking speed and the SS speed from the user-driven trials (p < 0.05). Changes in AGRF and TLA were caused primarily by changes in walking speed, not the treadmill controller. Our findings show the user-driven treadmill controller allowed participants to select walking speeds faster than their chosen speeds on the fixed speed treadmill and similar to their overground speeds. Since user-driven treadmill walking increases cognitive activity and natural mobility, these results suggest user-driven treadmill control would be a beneficial addition to current gait training programs for rehabilitation.  相似文献

Semi-aquatic mammals move between two very different media (air and water), and are subject to a greater range of physical forces (gravity, buoyancy, drag) than obligate swimmers or runners. This versatility is associated with morphological compromises that often lead to elevated locomotor energetic costs when compared to fully aquatic or terrestrial species. To understand the basis of these differences in energy expenditure, this study examined the interrelationships between limb morphology, cost of transport and biomechanics of running in a semi-aquatic mammal, the North American river otter. Oxygen consumption, preferred locomotor speeds, and stride characteristics were measured for river otters (body mass=11.1 kg, appendicular/axial length=29%) trained to run on a treadmill. To assess the effects of limb length on performance parameters, kinematic measurements were also made for a terrestrial specialist of comparable stature, the Welsh corgi dog (body mass=12.0 kg, appendicular/axial length=37%). The results were compared to predicted values for long legged terrestrial specialists. As found for other semi-aquatic mammals, the net cost of transport of running river otters (6.63 J kg(-1)min(-1) at 1.43 ms(-1)) was greater than predicted for primarily terrestrial mammals. The otters also showed a marked reduction in gait transition speed and in the range of preferred running speeds in comparison to short dogs and semi-aquatic mammals. As evident from the corgi dogs, short legs did not necessarily compromise running performance. Rather, the ability to incorporate a period of suspension during high speed running was an important compensatory mechanism for short limbs in the dogs. Such an aerial period was not observed in river otters with the result that energetic costs during running were higher and gait transition speeds slower for this versatile mammal compared to locomotor specialists.  相似文献

We previously reported that low doses of d-tubocurarine attenuated glycogen loss in red muscles of rats during treadmill walking but that the initial hyperemia in the muscles was normal. The present studies were performed to 1) determine with electromyography (EMG) whether red muscle fiber activity is reduced in walking, curarized rats and 2) study muscle blood flow and glycogen loss during running with different doses of curare (dose response). At 0.5 min of treadmill walking (15 m/min), integrated EMG in vastus intermedius (VI) muscle was reduced by an average of 18% in curarized (60 micrograms/kg) rats, although blood flow (measured with microspheres) was the same as in saline control rats. Comparison of blood flows and glycogen loss in quadriceps muscles at 1 min of treadmill running (30 m/min) with different curare doses (20-60 micrograms/kg) demonstrated that red muscle glycogen loss was inversely related to curare dose but that blood flows in the same muscles were unaffected by curare. These findings provide support for our previous conclusion that at the initiation of low to moderate treadmill exercise, red muscle blood flow is not proportional to the activity or metabolism of the muscle fibers.  相似文献

It has been argued that minimization of metabolic-energy costs is a primary determinant of gait selection in terrestrial animals. This view is based predominantly on data from humans and horses, which have been shown to choose the most economical gait (walking, running, galloping) for any given speed. It is not certain whether a minimization of metabolic costs is associated with the selection of other prevalent forms of terrestrial gaits, such as grounded running (a widespread gait in birds). Using biomechanical and metabolic measurements of four ostriches moving on a treadmill over a range of speeds from 0.8 to 6.7 m s(-1), we reveal here that the selection of walking or grounded running at intermediate speeds also favours a reduction in the metabolic cost of locomotion. This gait transition is characterized by a shift in locomotor kinetics from an inverted-pendulum gait to a bouncing gait that lacks an aerial phase. By contrast, when the ostrich adopts an aerial-running gait at faster speeds, there are no abrupt transitions in mechanical parameters or in the metabolic cost of locomotion. These data suggest a continuum between grounded and aerial running, indicating that they belong to the same locomotor paradigm.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential variations in cardiorespiratory and metabolic parameters and running performance among 3 modes of exercise of the same duration, namely, intermittent running with active recovery (AR) or passive recovery (PR) and continuous running (CR) and whether these variations could affect passive recovery time (PRT). Fifteen male physical education students with a subspecialty in soccer were studied (mean age 22.3 ± 2.5 years, training experience 12.3 ± 2.5 years) in the middle of the playing season. The results showed that during exercise, the highest heart rate (HR) and VO2 values were observed in CR, whereas the lowest values in PR followed by AR. Blood lactate (BLa) concentration was higher in PR by 38% compared to that in AR (p < 0.05). The exercise duration was similar between PR and AR tests and longer than in CR. With regard to PRT, the highest HR (186 ± 9 b · min(-1)), VO2 (55.5 ± 5.2 ml · kg(-1) · min(-1)), and BLa (5.1 ± 1.7 mmol · L(-1)) values were found in CR. No differences in HR and VO2 between PR and AR were detected. However, despite the differences in BLa concentration between AR and PR during exercise, the PRT BLa values between these 2 exercise modes were not different. Among the 3 running protocols, only CR appeared to have fully challenged the cardiorespiratory system inducing maximal HR and VO2 responses during exercise and high BLa values in PRT, yet these responses were not associated with better exercise performance compared to intermittent running. Therefore, intermittent exercise, regardless of implementing passive or active interval, might be the preferable exercise mode particularly in activities extended over 30 minutes.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of accelerometer output, in counts (ActiGraph GT1M) and as raw accelerations (ActiGraph GT3X+ and GENEA), with ground reaction force (GRF) in adults. Ten participants (age: 29.4 ± 8.2 yr, mass: 74.3 ± 9.8 kg, height: 1.76 ± 0.09 m) performed eight trials each of: slow walking, brisk walking, slow running, faster running and box drops. GRF data were collected for one step per trial (walking and running) using a force plate. Low jumps and higher jumps (one per second) were performed for 20 s each on the force plate. For box drops, participants dropped from a 35 cm box onto the force plate. Throughout, three accelerometers were worn at the hip: GT1M, GT3X+ and GENEA. A further GT3X+ and GENEA were worn on the left and right wrist, respectively. GT1M counts correlated with peak impact force (r = 0.85, p < 0.05), average resultant force (r = 0.73, p < 0.05) and peak loading rate (r = 0.76, p < 0.05). Accelerations from the GT3X+ and GENEA correlated with average resultant force and peak loading rate irrespective of whether monitors were worn at the hip or wrist (r > 0.82, p < 0.05, r > 0.63 p < 0.05, respectively). In conclusion, accelerometer count and raw acceleration output correlate positively with GRF and thus may be appropriate for the quantification of activity beneficial to bone. Wrist-worn monitors show a similar relationship with GRF as hip-worn monitors, suggesting that wrist-worn monitors may be a viable option for future studies looking at bone health.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this study was to document the physiological responses of level walking and running (LW/R) at various speeds, and grade walking (GW) at various grades on a treadmill. Twenty-four young untrained Japanese women performed 2 tests on the specially designed treadmill for a higher grade exercise. The first test was the LW/R with increase of speeds, 33.3, 66.7, 91.7, and 116.7 m.min(-1). The first 3 progressions were for walking and the last progression was for running. The second test was the GW with increase of grades 0, 10, 20, and 30% with the velocity of 33.3 m.min(-1) in all progressions. The different combinations of speeds and grade for the progressions used in this study were selected based on the results of preliminary pilot studies, so that the percent heart rate maximim (%HRmax) was reached at the minimum intensities recommended to allow improving cardiorespiratory fitness by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Gastric emptying is increased during running (50%-70% maximal aerobic uptake, VO2max) as compared to rest. Whether this increase varies as a function of mode (i.e. walking vs running) and intensity of treadmill exercise is unknown. To examine the gastric emptying characteristics of water during treadmill exercise performed over a wide range of intensities relative to resting conditions, 10 men ingested 400 ml of water prior to each of six 15 min exercise bouts or 15 min of seated rest. Three bouts of walking exercise (1.57 m.s-1) were performed at increasing grades eliciting approximately 28%, 41% or 56% of VO2max. On a separate day, three bouts of running (2.68 ms-1) exercise were performed at grades eliciting approximately 57%, 65% or 75% of VO2max. Gastric emptying was increased during treadmill exercise at all intensities excluding 75% VO2max as compared to rest. Gastric emptying was similar for all intensities during walking and at 57% and 65% VO2max during running. However, running at 74% VO2max decreased the volume of original drink emptied as compared to all lower exercise intensities. Stomach secretions were markedly less during running as compared to walking and rest. These data demonstrate that gastric emptying is similarly increased during both moderate intensity (approximately 28%-65% VO2max) walking or running exercise as compared to resting conditions. However, gastric emptying decreases during high intensity exercise. Increases in gastric emptying during moderate intensity treadmill exercise may be related to increases in intragastric pressure brought about by contractile activity of the abdominal muscles.  相似文献

Clinical locomotor research seeks to facilitate adaptation or retention of new walking patterns by providing feedback. Within a split-belt treadmill paradigm, sagittal plane feedback improves adaptation but does not affect retention. Representation of error in this manner is cognitively demanding. However, it is unknown in this paradigm how frontal plane feedback, which may utilize a unique learning process, impacts locomotor adaptation. Frontal plane movement feedback has been shown to impact retention of novel running mechanics but has yet to be evaluated in gait conditions widely applicable within neurorehabilitation, such as walking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of frontal plane mirror feedback on gait adaptation and retention during split-belt treadmill walking. Forty healthy young adults were divided into two groups: one group received mirror feedback during the first split-belt exposure and the other received no mirror feedback. Individuals in the mirror feedback group were asked to look at their legs in the mirror, but no further instructions were given. Individuals with mirror feedback displayed more symmetric stance time during the first strides of adaptation and maintained this pattern into the second split-belt exposure when no feedback was provided. Individuals with mirror feedback also demonstrated more symmetric double support time upon returning to normal walking. Lastly, the mirror feedback also allowed individuals to walk with smaller gait variability during the final steps of both split-belt exposures. Overall, mirror feedback allowed individuals to reduce their stance time asymmetry and led to a more consistent adapted pattern, suggesting this type of feedback may have utility in gait training that targets symmetry and consistency in movement.  相似文献

Three groups of male subjects, average fitness (AF, N = 12), high fitness (HF, N = 7) and highly fit competitive race walkers (CRW, N = 3) performed maximal treadmill tests walking at 3.5 and 4.5 mph and running at 4.5, 5.5, 7.0, and 8.5 mph. In addition, the HF group performed a running test at 10.0 mph and the CRW group performed a walking test at 5.5 mph. All maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) tests with the exception of the 3.5 mph walking test (modified Balke test) were discontinuous in nature. VO2 max obtained from walking tests was similar regardless of speed within each group. Walking VO2 max was significantly lower than running VO2 max which was found to be similar over a speed range of 4.5 to 8.5 mph in the AF group. Running at 4.5 mph (HF group) and 4.5 and 5.5 mph (CRW group) resulted in lower VO2 max levels than running at speeds greater than or equal to 7.0 mph. Associated physiological variables (heart rate, ventilation, and respiratory exchange ratio) did not demonstrate a discernable pattern with reference to mode of locomotion (walking versus running) or speed. It was concluded that VO2 max elicited during walking is independent of speed and less than VO2 max obtained during running.
