Monthly changes in density and biomass of a Pila globosa population were estimated in the littoral area of the pond Idumban. Mean density of active snail was 10.4, equivalent to 76 g dry weight/m2 during 1973 and 6.5, equivalent to 45 g/m2 during 1974. Total population size of the snail decreased from 9.2 × 106 individuals, equivalent to 6.5 ton during 1973 to 6.3 × 106 snails, equivalent to 4.4 ton during 1974. The period from December to May represented the time of abundance and active growth. Mortality assessed from marking and recapture as well as from monthly changes in population density, averaged to 2.7 snails/m2/month or 20% of the density. Growth estimated by marking and recapture suggested that the snail required a period of over 4 years to attain a body (wet) weight of 35 g. Laboratory experiments revealed that young (<4 g), intermediate (4 g><24 g) and old (>24 g) P. globosa grew at the rate of 4.0, 1.5 and 0.3 mg dry weight/g live weight/day. Using these values and the size-wise population density data, net productivity of the snail was estimated as 74 and 40 g/m2/year in 1973 and 74, respectively. The snail exhibited an efficiency of 70% for absorption and 10% for conversion. Using these values, it was further possible to estimate rates of feeding and absorption for the population. Consumption amounted to 1039 g/m2 in 1973 and 560 g/m2 in 1974. The efficiencies of exploitation, gross and net productions were 21, 7 and 10%, respectively; ecological efficiency amounted to 1.4% only.  相似文献

Monthly changes in the morphometric features of pond Idumban reveal that total and littoral areas progressively decreased from 62.4 and 15.4 ha in October-November-December to 6.8 and 2.6 ha in September. The dominant macrophytic producers in the littoral area of the pond were Chara fragilis, Hydrilla verticillata and Ceratophyllum demersum, which flourished from October for a period of 8 to 10 months, exhibiting a typical exponential or J-shaped population growth curve. Biomass of Ch. fragilis increased to the maximum of about 420 g dry weight/m2 in April, H. verticillata to 260 g/m2 in June–July and that of Ce. demersum to 140 g/m2 in April–May. In terms of unit weight, H. verticillata proved to be the most efficient, producing 156 mg dry substance/g plant/day; however, the mean values obtained for 1973-74 were 93, 54 and 53 mg/g/day for H. verticillata, Ch. fragilis and Ce. demersum; the corresponding NPP values 50, 29 and 30 mg/g/day. The GPP and NPP values, expressed in g dry weight/m2/day, were 7 and 4 for H. verticillata, 8 and 4 for Ch. fragilis, 3 and 2 for Ce. demersum. These values, expressed in mg C/m2/day, averaged to 8.2 and 4.6 for all the macrophytes and suggest that the macrophytes were photosynthetically faster and more efficient than phytoplankton. Total gross productivity for Idumban pond amounts to 1773 and 1449 ton (dry weight) for 1973 and 74, respectively: the corresponding values for the NPP were 953 and 825 ton. In other words, 44% of the GPP is lost on plant respiration. Plants equivalent to 56 ton (6% of NPP) are exposed to death in the periphery of the littoral area. The population of Pila globosa proved to be the dominant consumer of these macrophytes. Mean predation amounted to 64 ton/annum for Pila and 200 ton/ annum for other consumer animals. Solar energy known to enter the pond is 1,956,000 Kcal/m2/year. Of this, 24,682 Kcal/m2/year was fixed by the macrophytes, i.e. the photosynthetic efficiency is 1.3%. Of the total GPP, NPP amounted to 13,696 Kcal/m2/year; the net primary production efficiency is 56%. Consumption of the macrophytes by Pila population amounted to 2,943 Kcal/m year and the exploitation efficiency is only 21%.  相似文献

During aestivation the metabolic rate of the Australian goldfields frog Neobatrachus wilsmorei was reduced by 80% from its standard metabolic rate. The in vitro rate of oxygen consumption of isolated muscle and skin from aestivating frogs was up to 50% lower than that of the non-aestivating frogs. This in vitro rate of oxygen consumption was maintained for 6–12 h, indicating an intrinsic metabolic depression of tissues during aestivation. Frogs became dehydrated during aestivation. Muscle, skin and liver also became dehydrated during aestivation, but brain and kidney did not. Na+ and K+ contents and extracellular space measurement for muscle indicated that ion gradients were maintained across the muscle cell membrane during aestivation. Increases in plasma concentrations of Na+ and K+ were matched with similar increases in muscle intracellular ion concentrations. Extracellular space measurements were unsuccessful in the other tissues, but K+ content in all tissues (per dry weight) was maintained during aestivation, and the concentration of plasma K+ did not increase above that which can be accounted for by dehydration, indicating that K+ gradients were maintained.Abbreviations bm body mass - DPM disintegrations per minute - dw dry weight - MR metabolic rate - vO2 rate of oxygen consumption - ww wet weight  相似文献

Changes in [35S]methionine protein labeling patterns were examined by following incorporation into the acid precipitate protein fraction of land snails,Otala lactea (Müller) (Pulmonata, Helicidae). Labeled proteins were analyzed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing columns. Snails in four different physiological states were compared: active controls, short term aestivating snails (injected and allowed to enter aestivation), long term aestivating snails (aestivated for 14 days, injected, and maintained in the aestivating state), and snails aroused after aestivation (aestivated, injected, and aroused). Protein associated radioactivity was measured over a 7 day time course post injection. Autoradiographic analysis of SDS-polyacrylamide gels showed increases in the radioactivity of four proteins: 91 kDa (hepatopancreas, day 1 in long term aestivating animals), 50 kDa (hepatopancreas, day 2 in short term aestivating snails), 70 kDa and 30 kDa (foot, day 2 in short term aestivating animals). Hepatopancreas and foot from day 1 long term aestivating and day 2 short term aestivating animals were also analyzed by isoelectric focusing columns. Several pH-specific differences were apparent when controls and aestivating animals were analyzed. In particular a peak of radioactivity was observed at pH 5.05 in 1 d long term aestivating hepatopancreas and at pH 4.30 in 2d short term aestivating animals. Several differences were noted in foot with no specific pattern emerging. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of the hepatopancreas peaks showed the appearance of several bands with increased radioactivity, including the 91 kDa and 50 kDa proteins described above. Changes in membrane lipid composition (membrane remodelling) have been associated with metabolic depression in some aestivating snails but has not been studied in aestivating frogs. This study examined the membrane phospholipid composition of two Australian aestivating frog species Cyclorana alboguttata and Cyclorana australis. The results showed no major membrane remodelling of tissue in either frog species, or in mitochondria of C. alboguttata due to aestivation. Mitochondrial membrane remodelling was not investigated in C. australis. Where investigated in C. alboguttata, total protein and phospholipid content, and citrate synthase (CS) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activities in tissues and mitochondria mostly did not change with aestivation in liver. In skeletal muscle, however, CS and CCO activities, mitochondrial and tissue phospholipids, and mitochondrial protein decreased with aestivation. These decreases in muscle indicate that skeletal muscle mitochondrial content may decrease during aestivation. Na+K+ATPase activity of both frog species showed no effect of aestivation. In C. alboguttata different fat diets had a major effect on both tissue and mitochondrial phospholipid composition indicating an ability to remodel membrane composition that is not utilised in aestivation. Therefore, changes in lipid composition associated with some aestivating snails do not occur during aestivation in these Australian frogs.  相似文献

Protein phosphorylation patterns were investigated in whole tissues and subcellular fractions of active and aestivatingOtala lactea (Müller) (Pulmonata, Helicidae). Measurement of overall protein phosphorylation showed that incorporation of32P increased until the second day after injection and remained constant for the remaining 4 days of the time course. Comparison of tissues from aestivating and active snails on day 3 showed a decreased protein phosphorylation in aestivating snails (44% of active). No differences in total and protein-associated radioactivity for foot, mantle or haemolymph were observed. Subcellular fractionation of the hepatopancreas localized the changes to plasma membrane, microsomal, and cytosolic fractions: values for aestivating animals were reduced to 71, 37 and 58% of the corresponding active values. Separation of the individual subcellular fractions on isoelectric focusing columns revealed differences in the phosphate incorporation patterns. Plasma membrane from aestivating animal hepatopancreas had a lower overall level of incorporation and fewer radioactive peaks in the pH 7–10 region than did the plasma membrane fraction from active animals. SDS-PAGE analysis of plasma membrane fractions from active and aestivating snails showed a relative decrease in phosphorylation between 60–80 kDa and 30–40 kDa. IEF analysis of cytosolic proteins from aestivating snail hepatopancreas also showed peaks of radioactivity that were apparently shifted by 0.3 pH units toward higher pI values. Increased phosphate incorporation was observed at a peak that corresponded to the pI value for pyruvate kinase in aestivating snails but definite assignment of peaks was not possible. SDS-PAGE analysis of cytosolic proteins showed an aestivation-related decrease in relative protein phosphorylation between 30–35 kDa and 40–45 kDa. A relative increase in phosphorylation during aestivation was observed for proteins between 16–22 kDa. Overall, the data indicate that snails dramatically alter their protein phosphorylation pattern in hepatopancreas during aestivation. Primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of a daphnid and a chaoborid were studied in a small eutrophic pond. The gross primary production of phytoplankton was 290 gC m−2 per 9 months during April–December. Regression analysis showed that the gross primary production was related to the incident solar radiation and the chlorophylla concentration and not to either total phosphorus or total inorganic nitrogen concentration. The mean chlorophylla concentration (14.2 mg m−3), however, was about half the expected value upon phosphorus loading of this pond. The mean zooplankton biomass was 1.60 g dry weight m−2, of whichDaphnia rosea and cyclopoid copepods amounted to 0.69 g dry weight m−2 and 0.61 g dry weight m−2, respectively. The production ofD. rosea was high during May–July and October and the level for the whole 9 months was 22.6 g dry weight m−2.Chaoborus flavicans produced 10 complete and one incomplete cohorts per year. Two consecutive cohorts overlapped during the growing season. The maximum density, the mean biomass, and the production were 19,100 m−2, 0.81 g dry weight m−2, and 11.7 g dry weight m−2yr−1, respectively. As no fish was present in this pond, the emerging biomass amounted to 69% of larval production. The production ofC. flavicans larvae was high in comparison with zooplankton production during August–September, when the larvae possibly fed not only on zooplankton but also algae.  相似文献

Effects of grazing on the quantity and quality of freshwater Aufwuchs   总被引:6,自引:5,他引:1  
Qualitative and quantitative measures of the Aufwuchs (scum flora) on artificial substrates in situ were used to evaluate the effects of grazing by freshwater pulmonate snails in a shallow pond in southeastern Michigan. Grazer densities of 216 snails/m2 marked reduced standing crop so that after 45 days grazed substrata had 6.46 mg dry weight, 604 µg C and 4.18 µg chlorophyll a as compared to controls with 30.62 mg dry weight, 3699 µg C and 6.29 µg chlorophyll a, all on a per dm2 basis.Grazing did not change carbon per mg dry matter but caused significant increases in both µg chlorophyll a (control, 0.206; and grazed, 0.649 µg chlorophyll a/mg dry weight, P < 0.01) and nitrogen (control, 8.3; and grazed, 24.2 µg N/mg dry weight, P < 0.001) after 45 days. Both abundance and diversity of the attached community was reduced by grazing from 24 taxa and 80,889 individuals/cm2 on control to 8 taxa and 501 individuals/cm2 on grazed substrates. Mean productivity of the Aufwuchs was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced by grazing from 76.3 µg C/(dm2·day) on control to 17.7 µg C/(dm2·day) on grazed substrata.Snails were very efficient at clearing smooth surfaces of living cells, detritus, and particulate inorganic matter. There was little evidence of selectivity except for an apparent inability to remove some of the smallest cells (e.g. Cocconeis sp.) probably for mechanical reasons.  相似文献

The freshwater snail Melanopsis praemorsa is veryabundant inoases of the Judean Desert. To determine its role as littershredder, experiments were carried out in Nahal Arugot. Boxeswereplaced in the stream (29 °C), each containing 1 g ofdrywillow leaves together with one snail; or six snails.With one snail per box, dry leaf weight after two daysdeclined to72% of the initial dry weight, after twelve days to 58% andaftereighteen days to only 40%. During this period thesnails in the experiment increased by 12% in shell-height, by20%in snail weight (including the shell), by 33% in live freshbiomass. Each snail consumed about 10 mg litter per day.With six snails per box, dry leaf weight after two daysdeclined to62% of the initial dry weight and after twenty days to only15%.In natural populations where density was 44 snails per quadrat(of25×25 cm), 1 g of dry leaves was reduced to 25%theinitial weight within three days. Overall plant cover along a600×10 m stretch of the stream was found to be45%, ofwhich 65% was willow. During one year about 1 kg litter wasshedper m2 willow; by extrapolation, this would be about1800 kglitter throughout the stretch. Much of this vast amount oflitteris consumed by the snails, who thereby reduce summer dammingof theoasis. Our study suggests that M. praemorsa, a generalistfeeder, may be a major litter shredder in certain desert oasisecosystems.  相似文献

1. Grazing by invasive species can affect many aspects of an aquatic system, but most studies have focused on the direct effects on plants. We conducted mesocosm and laboratory experiments to examine the impact of the invasive apple snail Pomacea canaliculata on macrophytes, filamentous algae, nutrients and phytoplankton. 2. In a freshwater pond, we confined 500 g of Myriophyllum aquaticum or Eichhornia crassipes with 0, 2, 4 or 8 apple snails in 1 m × 1 m × 1 m enclosures for approximately 1 month. Apple snails grazed heavily on both species of macrophytes, with higher overall weight losses at higher snail densities. The damage patterns differed between the two macrophytes. In M. aquaticum, both leaves and stems suffered from substantial herbivory, whereas in E. crassipes, only the roots suffered significant weight reduction. 3. In addition to grazing on macrophytes, apple snails appeared to have controlled the growth of filamentous algae, as these did not develop in the snail treatments. The ability of P. canaliculata to control filamentous algae was supported by a laboratory experiment where the consumption was as high as 0.25 g g−1 snail DW d−1. Because of a lack of native herbivorous snails in the pond, the growth of filamentous algae (mainly Spirogyra sp.) reached 80.3 g m−2, forming a spongy pond scum in the no‐apple snail control. Together with previous reports that apple snails could eat the juveniles and eggs of other freshwater snails, our results indicated that P. canaliculata could have out‐competed native herbivorous snails from the pond by predation on their juveniles or eggs. Alternatively, P. canaliculata might have out‐competed them by monopolisation of food resources. 4. Nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations remained low throughout both experiments and were not correlated with apple snail density. The treatment effects on chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phytoplankton composition varied in the two experiments. In the M. aquaticum experiment, with increasing snail density, Chl a increased, and the phytoplankton community became dominated by Cryptophyceae. In the E. crassipes experiment, Chl a level was independent of snail density, but with increasing snail density, the phytoplankton community became co‐dominated by Cryptophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae. 5. Given the multiple effects of P. canaliculata on wetland biodiversity and function, management strategies should be developed to prevent its further spread. In invaded wetlands, strategies should be developed to eradicate the apple snail and re‐introduce native snails which can control the development of filamentous algae.  相似文献

在室外受控实验条件下,研究了不同密度(0,150,450个/m2)纹沼螺(Parafossarulus striatulus)对沉水植物苦草(Vallisneria spiralis)生长的影响。结果表明,螺类牧食活动促进了苦草生长,与无螺对照组相比,低密度螺处理组中苦草的相对生长率、株高均增加了20%;高密度组中苦草的相对生长率、叶片数和株高分别增加了28%、15%和27%。分析表明,纹沼螺通过牧食活动降低植物叶片上附着生物干重,从而促进了苦草生长。丰富了螺-草互利关系的研究内容,有助于加深理解水生态系统中生物之间的生态关系。  相似文献

树栖腹足类动物是红树林底栖动物的重要组成部分,其组成和分布受到红树植被的影响。因此,在红树林生态修复中,腹足类动物的恢复依赖于植被的发育。滨螺科(Littorinidae)锥滨螺属(Mainwaringia)动物是亚洲红树林的广布种,但针对其在红树林中的分布及种群特征的研究较少,对红树林植被恢复过程中锥滨螺属动物的恢复动态更是鲜有研究。调查了厦门下潭尾湿地秋茄(Kandelia obovata)红树林恢复初期,新记录种莱氏锥滨螺(Mainwaringia leithii)种群恢复的时间动态,并分析其与植被参数的关系。研究发现,红树林恢复初期,秋茄植被生长迅速,株高、冠幅、基径和覆盖度分别由0.5年生幼林的41.3 cm、25.0 cm、1.04 cm和25%增长为8年生样地的179.2 cm、76.7 cm、5.96 cm和95%。在秋茄胚轴种植6个月左右开始记录到莱氏锥滨螺的个体,其密度和生物量在1.5 a后达到最大(分别为136个/m2和1.86 g/m2),而后逐渐降低,种植3 a后秋茄林内莱氏锥滨螺仅零星分布。除8年生的样地,莱氏锥滨...  相似文献

Crevice-dwelling land snails emerge only infrequently to theexposed surface, and very little is known about their naturalhistory. Here we report on the biology, life cycle, populationdynamics and longevity of one such species, Cristataria genezarethana,which we studied over a period of three years. C. genezarethana spends 95–98% of its lifetime withinrock crevices. In winter the crevice serves as an egg layingsite, and as a retreat during periods of inactivity. Throughoutsummer it serves for aestivation adults aestivate near CTeviceopenings, young apparently deeper inside. The surface of the rock serves mainly as a lichen-feeding andcopulating site, to which the snails emerge during brief periodsof activity. Both for the onset and for the continuation ofits activity season, C. genezarethana is absolutely dependentupon rain. However, activity ends before the end of the rainyseason, suggesting that aestivation is not merely a direct responseto dry climate. Though the population as a whole was active on each rainy day,no more than 15%–20% of the population were active simultaneously.An individual snail was active, on average, for only 6–12days per year. Population size of the study-rock reached 2000–2900individuals, and mean density was 150–200 snails m2. Thissnail carrying capacity of the rock is broadly similar to thatof densely populated bushy habitats (when snail weight is considered).In these dense populations, low mating frequencies and growthinhibition may regulate population size. In all three seasons, the population consisted of two main large,well defined age groups: adults and young. As compared to theadults, the young were active on different parts of the rockand at different times. Although a third, intermediate groupof sub adults was found, it was always very small. A fourthgroup, of juveniles, appeared during winter; later, most ofthem disappeared. We did not observe any shift from the young to the adult sizegroup. This suggests a broadly stable population, with virtuallyno recruitment, in which final growth to adulthood is inhibitedby the adults. Growth was very slow, suggesting that maturityin nature is reached in about 11 years, and that individualslive sixteen years at least. Mortality occurred in all age groups,and about 5% of the population died each year. There was noevidence for heavy predation. The effects of eleven chosen feeding levels ranging from 0 to 198 mg damp dry (plant) Ceratophyllum/g live snail/day on the absorption, conversion and metabolism of the snail Pila globosa (of 1 -9 g body weight) have been studied. Absorption rates increased from 3-0 to 21-0 mg dry food/g live snail/day in snails fed 3-4-28-8 mg dry food/g live snail/day. In these snails, absorption efficiency decreased from 87.5 to 73.0%. Conversion rates increased from 0-3 mg/g/day for snails receiving 23-4 mg/g/day to 2-7 mg/g/day for those fed maximum amounts, and the efficiency (K2) also increased from 1-9% to 130%. When compared to other gastropods, Pila globosa appears to be a poor convertor. During 30 days' starvation, the test individuals lost 4.4 mg dry body substance/g/day i.e. the maintenance cost was 14-7 cal/g live snail/day. The SDA increased by four times for those feeding on maximum rations in comparison to those receiving about 5 mg/g/day, i.e. the energy cost for converting food was increased four times.  相似文献

Summary The population densities of snails living in beech litter were studied form March 1968 to April 1969. Litter production over one year was measured and the role of snails in litter disappearance assessed.Snails were extracted from litter using a modified Vágvölgyi (1952) flotation method, extraction efficiencies being 84%. The mean annual population density of the twenty-one species of snail recorded on the main sampling site was estimated at 489/m2. Carychium tridentatum was the most numerous species, with a mean density of 200/m2. Acanthinula aculeata, Punctum pygmaeum and Vitrea contracta also had fairly high mean densities. The mean annual biomass was 699 mg dry wt./m2 or 278 mg ash-free dry wt./m2. Hygromia striolata and Oxychilus cellarius/alliarius were the most important species in terms of biomass on the main site. Within the limits of accuracy imposed by the sampling regime the population densities of four out of five of the species (C. tridentatum, A. aculeata, V. contracta, Retinella pura) studied remained unchanged throughout the year, whereas P. pygmaeum had a significantly higher autumn population. C. tridentatum populations were highly aggregated at all times of the year, most markedly so in June. Other species were aggregated at certain times of the year only. Samples taken from other sites showed total population densities of snails ranging from 185–1082 snails/m2.A total tree litter production of 652 g/m2/annum was recorded of which 584g/m2/annum was of beech material. 72% fell in the October–December period. 58% of the beech litter-fall was leaves, 5.2% bud-scales, 27% fruits and 10% twigs and bark. Summation of appropriate field layer peak standing crops amounted to 23.3 g/m2. This was considered as potential litter and was equivalent to 3.4% of the total litter input. The litter standing on the woodland floor in Septermber 1968 was 2,700 g/m2, hence, assuming a steady state, litter turnover time was estimated as 4.5 years.It was calculated that the total snail population ingested 0.35–0.43% of the annual litter input, of which 49% was assimilated. The role of the individual species is examined in relation to concepts of key species in ecosystem functioning. The possible role of slugs in decomposition processes is also discussed.  相似文献

Optimal foraging theory was used to explain selective foraging by the introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on the thin-shelled common pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis). Crayfish predation efficiency was studied in relation to habitat complexity and snail size. In a pool experiment (area 1.3 m2) single adult crayfish were allowed to feed on four size classes of snails for one week. A pair-wise preference trial (aquarium experiment) tested if adult crayfish selectively predated on particular size classes of snail and if prey value (expressed as snail dry mass per handling time) could explain the size range of snails chosen. Crayfish preferred the smallest size classes of snails in both pool and aquaria experiments. In the pool experiment crayfish had a strong effect on snail survival. Habitat complexity did not affect overall snail survival, but resulted in reduced predation pressure on the smallest size classes of snails. Handling time and shell-thickness increased exponentially with increasing snail size, and the two smallest size classes had the highest prey values. The results suggest that crayfish can structure the abundance and size distribution of thin-shelled snails, through size-selective predation and reduction of macrophytes. The mechanisms behind the choice of snails may be based on prey value and reduced exposure time to predators and conspecifics. Summary The population dynamics of the prosobranch snail Planaxis sulcatus and its trematode parasites on 600 m of beachrock on the southern side of Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, were studied. Populations of Planaxis show little mixing, due to lack of long-distance movements. From March 1973 to June 1975, an increase in the numbers of small and medium-sized snails occurred, but the biomass (dry tissue weight) of the snail population did not change. Snails were infected with one species of Aspidogastrea and six species of cerariae. Infections with cercariae did not significantly affect the relative weight of the snails. Multiple infections were random, i.e. neither negative nor positive interactions between trematode species could be demonstrated. Proportions of uninfected snails and snails infected with various trematode species remained more or less constant from July 1973 to February 1975.The population dynamics of the prosobranch snail Cerithium moniliferum and its 11 species of cercariae and one species of Aspidogastrea in a small area at Heron Island were studied. Numbers of large snails decreased and numbers of small snails increased from August 1973 to June 1975. The biomass of the Cerithium population increased only slightly. Prevalence of infection changed significantly only in large snails.Infections of Cerithium moniliferum and Peristernia australiensis with an aspidogastrid species decreased strongly from January 1971 to March/April 1972 and had not recovered by mid 1975.Seasonal fluctuations could not be demonstrated for any of the snails or parasites.The data for Planaxis suggest equilibrium conditions and saturation of the habitat.  相似文献

In response to environmental stress (low water, low oxygen) snails sharply suppress their metabolic rate, a process that is coordinated at the molecular level by reversible protein phosphorylation of key enzymes and functional proteins. Factors affecting protein kinase activity are, therefore, critical to metabolic suppression. Changes in the concentration of protein kinase second messenger compounds were followed over the first 24 h of aestivation and anoxia exposure in the terrestrial snail Otala lactea (Muller) (Pulmonata, Helicidae). The results showed declining concentrations of cyclic AMP over the first 24 h of anoxia exposure and aestivation in foot. Cyclic AMP concentrations in hepatopancreas transiently decreased with the lowest concentration observed at 4 h in both anoxic and aestivating animals. A transient increase in foot muscle cyclic GMP concentrations was apparent 4 h after the start of aestivation whereas a slow, steady increase was seen in anoxic foot muscle. Foot muscle 1,4,5-inositol triphosphate (IP3) concentrations decreased transiently during anoxia exposure and aestivation. Hepatopancreas IP3 concentrations were significantly lower in 24 h anoxic snails and foot IP3 concentrations were significantly lower in 24 h aestivating snails. Kinetic characterization of purified PKA catalytic subunit was also performed. Snail PKA catalytic subunit had an absolute requirement for Mg2+ ion but was inhibited at Mg2+ concentrations above 0.5 mM. Increasing concentrations of neutral salts and phosphate also inhibited activity although the inhibition by phosphate appeared to be specific since the inhibition constant (I50 = 39 mM) was much lower than that of the neutral salts (I50 240 mM). The enzyme exhibited a broad pH optimum between pH 6.5–8.5. Arrhenius plots gave an activation energy of 13.3 kcal/mol corresponding to a Q10 value of 2.3. Summary

Gonadal maturation, spawning, fecundity and timing of reproduction of the snail Cerithidea cingulata in a brackish water pond in Molo, Iloilo, Philippines, are described. Snails 4–41 mm in shell length were sampled monthly from May 1997 to May 1998; 25% were <25 mm, 67% were 20–30 mm, and 8% were >30 mm. The sexes are separate and could first be distinguished at 15 mm. Males are aphallic, have narrower shells than females of the same length, and have bright yellow-orange testes overlying the digestive gland deep inside the shell. Females have more robust shells, an ovipositor at the right side of the foot, and yellow-green ovaries overlying the digestive gland. The sex ratio was one male to two females in the pond population studied. Gonadal maturation was monitored by means of gonadosomatic index (GSI, gonad weight as a percent of visceral weight); maturation stages were based on the gonad appearance (immature, developing, mature) and histology (immature, developing, mature, redeveloping). GSI increased with snail size, and reached 16% in a 33-mm female. The smallest mature males and females were 18–19 mm, and most snails >20 mm were mature, spawning, or redeveloping. Histological sections showed all stages of gametogenesis in mature male snails. The oocyte size-frequency distributions in mature females showed mostly mature oocytes and secondary oocytes, but also oogonia and primary oocytes. GSI and the frequency of snails at different maturation stages varied over the year. Both GSI and the frequency of mature snails were highest during the summer months, April to August. Nevertheless, mature snails occurred throughout the whole year, as did mating and egg-laying. Fecundity (= number of oocytes >70 pμ) increased with size in mature females 2041 mm; an average 25-mm female produced about 1,500 oocytes and larger females produced a maximum of about 2,500 oocytes. Eggs strings laid on the pond bottom were 45–75 mm long; an average 64-mm string contained 2,000 eggs 210+20 pm in diameter. The density of eggs strings was highest (80–120/m2) during March-September. Eggs hatched after 6–7 d into planktonic veligers, which in turn settle on the pond bottom 11–12 d later as juveniles. Juveniles 2–6-mm long were most abundant in the pond during August-October.  相似文献

Summary In the laboratory and field, we examined how periphyton (food of snails) and predatory crayfish influenced snail distribution in Trout Lake, a permanent, northern Wisconsin lake. Laboratory experiments (with no crayfish) tested the importance of periphyton biomass in determining snail preference among rocks, and among rock, sand, and macrophyte substrates. Among rocks with four different amounts of periphyton, periphyton biomass and the number of Lymnaea emarginata, Physa spp., and Amnicola spp. were positively related. A similar, but non-significant, trend occurred for Helisoma anceps. A field experiment at a site in Trout Lake where predation risk was low confirmed the preference by snails for periphyton covered rocks; more snails colonized rocks with periphyton than rocks without. When given a choice of rock, sand, and macrophytes in the laboratory, L. emarginata preferred high periphyton biomass and rock. Laboratory and field results contrasted with the distribution of snails in Trout Lake; no snails occurred in areas with abundant periphyton-covered rocks, but snails were abundant nearby on scattered rocks with little periphyton. However, where snails were absent, crayfish were abundant (14.5 crayfish-trap–1-day–1), and where snails were abundant, crayfish were rare (3.2 crayfish-trap–1-day–1), suggesting that crayfish predation reduced snails. The hypothesis that the negative association between snail and periphyton biomass resulted from snail grazing was supported by the results of a field snail enclosure-exclosure experiment (1 m2 cages; n=3). All experiments and observations therefore suggest that: 1) crayfish predation is more important than a preference for high periphyton biomass in determining snail distribution in Trout Lake; 2) periphyton biomass is negtively related to snail grazing; and 3) crayfish had a positive indirect effect on periphyton by preying on grazing snails.  相似文献
