The evolutionary dynamic of courtship signaling systems is drivenby the interaction between male trait distributions and femalepreferences. This interaction is complex because females maychoose mates based on multiple components of male signals, andfemale preference functions may vary depending on mate availability,female reproductive state, and environmental conditions. InPhotinus fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), flying males emitbioluminescent flash signals to locate sedentary females, whichreply selectively to attractive male flash signals with theirown response flash. In this study, we first examined temporalvariation in the paired-pulse flash patterns produced by Photinusgreeni males in the field and found significant among-male variation(70% of total variation) in interpulse intervals (IPIs). Therewas no significant relationship between male IPI and spermatophoresize, suggesting that P. greeni male courtship signals do notprovide females with reliable indicators of male material resources.In laboratory playback experiments, we presented P. greeni femaleswith simulated flash signals to assess how IPI and pulse durationindependently affected the likelihood of female flash response.We also examined the effects of female body mass and time duringthe mating season on female preference functions, hypothesizingthat females would be less discriminating when they were heavier(more fecund) and when mate availability declined. We foundthat P. greeni females discriminated among signals within theirspecies' range based primarily on flash pattern IPI. Neitherthe time during the mating season nor female weight alteredfemale preference functions for IPI, although season did influencefemale response to pulse duration. These results reveal thatP. greeni females discriminate among conspecific males basedprimarily on male IPIs, the same signal character previouslyshown to be important for firefly species recognition. Fieldplayback experiments indicated that female responsiveness peakednear the average IPI given by males at different ambient temperatures,suggesting that fireflies exhibit temperature coupling similarto that seen in many acoustically signaling animals.  相似文献

Relationships between individual plant weight and net photosynthesisper day (G(t, x) function of plant weight) in plant populationsof various stand structures were simulated based on a canopyphotosynthesis model. The G(t, x) functions of plant weightare determined mainly by LAI (leaf area index), the relationshipbetween individual plant weight and leaf area, canopy structureand extinction coefficient. The concave relationship betweenindividual plant weight and leaf area at small LAI (<2),at small extinction coefficient (< 0.5), or at the canopystructure having the maximum leaf area density at the bottomproduces a concave G(t, x) function, which generates negativeskewness of plant weight. The linear relationship between individualplant weight and leaf area at large LAI (> 2) produces aconvex G(t, x) function, which generates positive skewness ofplant weight. These simulation results coincide with G(t, x)functions obtained experimentally and with the well-known phenomenonof stand dynamics in which skewness of plant weight becomesnegative in the early growth stage and then increases to a positivevalue as a stand grows and becomes crowded. The evolution of male courtship signals such as the bioluminescentflashes of fireflies may be shaped, at least in part, by femalepreference for particular characteristics of the male signal.These female preferences for male courtship signals may ariseas a result of the benefits of choosing males with particulartraits. One possible benefit of mate choice occurs if femalescan use male courtship signals as an honest indicator of malenutritional contributions at mating, nuptial gifts. This paperreviews female preference for male flash characteristics inPhotinus fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), and the potentialfor females to use male flash characteristics to predict nuptialgift quality. In Photinus firefly species with single pulseflashes females preferentially respond to flashes of greaterintensity and duration. Male Photinus provide a nuptial giftto females at mating in the form of a spermatophore and flashduration serves as a good predictor of spermatophore mass formales collected early in the season. However, Photinus firefliesdo not feed as adults, so spermatophore mass decreases withsubsequent matings. In response, nutrient-limited females maystop preferentially responding to longer duration flashes, increasingtheir overall responsiveness later in the mating season as theyforage for spermatophores. Therefore, the evolution of malecourtship signals in Photinus fireflies is the product not onlyof female preference for male flash characteristics, but alsothe costs and benefits of female choice that shape these preferences.  相似文献

We have developed a one-step, two-color fluorescence detectionmethod using simultaneously two fluorogenic substrates for bothSouthern and Western blots on nylon membranes. For this enzyme-mediatedreporter system, a mixture of (i) 3-hydroxy-N-2'-biphenyl-2-naphthalenecarboxamidephosphate ester (HNPP), a substrate for alkaline phosphataseand (ii) N-(4-amino-5-methoxy-2-methylphenyl)benzamide (AMMB),a fluorogenic substrate for horseradish peroxidase was used.The reaction with these substrates produces blue (HNPP) andyellow (AMMB) fluorescent signals under ultraviolet light (302nm). Therefore, this simple method allows the simultaneous visualizationof two different targets on a single nylon membrane, e.g. nucleicacids or proteins.  相似文献

Animals often evolve complex signals to enhance their detectabilityby intended receivers. But signals that are more detectableby intended receivers may also be more likely to be interceptedby others, including predators. Courtship signaling in maleSchizocosa ocreata wolf spiders (Lycosidae) includes morphologicaltraits (prominent foreleg tufts) and active behaviors that togetherproduce a complex signal with simultaneous broadcast of visualand seismic components. Females respond more readily to maleswith large tufts and are more likely to respond when multiplemodalities (visual and seismic) are present in a complex signal.These spiders cooccur with active predators that may interceptthese conspicuous courtship signals and use them as huntingcues. We used video/seismic playback to experimentally isolateand manipulate aspects of the complex signal produced by maleS. ocreata. We found that increasing the size of a visual signal(male tufts) and increasing the complexity of the courtshipsignal by adding a second modality (visual plus seismic versusvisual alone) increased the speed with which a common predator,the jumping spider Phidippus clarus (Salticidae), respondedto playbacks of courting male S. ocreata. These results indicatethat the benefits of increased signaling efficacy of large visualsignaling ornaments and complex, multimodal signaling may becountered by increased predation risks.  相似文献

A method is presented for estimating relative growth rates andother growth parameters using data from randomized block designs,prior to conventional or functional growth analysis. This methodcan be extended to other experimental designs where an additivemodel is applicable. The effects of this approach are illustratedusing the most commonly derived growth quantities, relativegrowth rate, leaf area ratio and unit leaf rate (net assimilationrate), from an extensive data set available for the growth ofthe biennial Arctium tomentosum. Comparisons are made betweendifferent growth analytical techniques and a new procedure fordetermining unit leaf rate, with a rigorous statistical treatment,is presented for the particular case when the logarithms ofthe variates for leaf area and total dry weight are linearlyrelated. The quantity of isocitrate lyase protein was estimated, as apercentage of cell dry weight, by three different electrophoreticmethods: (a) direct collection and determination of proteinsafter electrophoresis; (b) separation and estimation of 35S-labelledproteins; (c) estimation from the density of stained bands onacrylamide gels. The possibility that protein-protein interactionduring electrophoresis might interfere with the results wasconsidered and discounted. The average result from the threemethods is that, in acetate-adapted cells of Chlorella pyrenoidosa,isocitrate lyase protein constitutes about 7.0 per cent of totalsoluble proteins (100,000 g supernatant), that is 1.0 per centof cell dry weight. The estimate agrees well with one basedon the increase in specific activity of the enzyme during purification.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of chlorophyll a (Chla), paniculateorganic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), net zoopiankton ash-freedry weight (AFDW), dry weight (DW) and carbon and nitrogen content,in parallel with primary production, was studied during a jointYugoslav cruise in January 1980. The results were interpretedin relation to hydrographic properties, with special emphasison the relationship between pelagic parameters. Spatial distributionof POC, PON and net zoopiankton AFDW and C and N contents showedsimilarities over the major part of the Adriatic, while Chlaand POC showed dissimilarities since higher Chla values wererestricted to the northwestern part of the Adriatic, separatedfrom the rest of the Adriatic by a pronounced thermal frontextending south of the Istrian peninsula. High POC was foundin the centre of the south Adriatic gyre and in the Jabuka Pit,the latter filled with cold water originating from the arealocated south of the thermal front. The areas of high POC werecharacterized by a higher POC recycling time than in other Adriaticregions. High Chla, POC, PON and net zooplankton AFDW and Cand N contents in parallel with increased primary productionwere found in the southwestern part of the Adriatic off Puglia(Italy) affected by a continuous terrigenous supply of nutrients.The observed spatial distribution pattern of pelagic organicmatter suggests that this distribution is mostly influencedby hydrographic conditions and that the assumption of permanentproductivity zones in the Adriatic is not applicable to thewinter situation.  相似文献

A method for quantifying changes in the cell population of Pisumsativum cotyledons during development is described. The methodis based on determining the frequency distribution for cellarea following the random sampling of a single-cell suspensionof cotyledon cells. The population profile of these cells changedprogressively and systematically from a single population, similarin size to meristematic cells, found in embryos less than 3.0mg in fresh weight, to a bimodal population in embryos greaterthan 100 mg fresh weight. This method was used to compare embryosof similar size from two genotypes near-isogenic except forgenes at the r locus. No significant differences were foundbetween the cell population profiles of embryos up to 30 mgfresh weight. However, a significant difference was found betweenembryos with fresh weights of 100 mg, the wrinkled (rr) linehaving a higher mean and maximum cell area (2 951 µm2and 9 240 µm2 respectively) than the round (RR) line (2591µm2and 6470 µm2respectively). Comparisons were alsomade between cotyledon cell populations from round (RR) embryosgrown in vivo and in vitro. The most obvious differences werethe higher mean and maximum cell size of the large cell populationof in vitro grown embryos which were twice those found in vivo.Embryos grown to either 30 mg or 100 mg fresh weight in vitrohad a much greater proportion of large cells in the populationwith a corresponding reduction in total cotyledon cell number,compared with similar sized embryos grown in vivo. These data suggest that comparisons between different genotypes,or, between cultured and in vivoembryos, based on morphologicalsimilarities between embryos, may be invalid and subject tomisinterpretation. Mating signals that increase attractiveness of males to femalescan also increase conspicuousness of the signaler to predatorsand parasites. We investigated the acoustic preference of speciesof blood-sucking flies of the genus Corethrella (Diptera: Corethrellidae),which eavesdrop on the sexual advertisement signals of túngarafrogs (Physalaemus pustulosus). Male frogs of this species facultativelyproduce 2 types of mating calls: simple (whines alone) and complex(whines and chucks). We tested the acoustic preference of theflies and their ability to locate their host when the frogsproduce simple or complex calls. The flies exhibited phonotaxisto both types of calls but were preferentially attracted tocomplex calls. We show that acoustic information alone is sufficientfor the flies' accurate localization of calling frogs. Complexcalls, however, were not approached at closer distance or withdecreased landing error (i.e., proportion of landings outsidethe target) than simple calls, suggesting that call structuredoes not influence localization performance. Female túngarafrogs and frog-eating bats (Trachops cirrhosus) also prefercomplex to simple túngara frog calls. Thus, intendedand unintended receivers with different ear morphologies exhibitthe same preference for a specific túngara frog calltype. This result is discussed in the context of the evolutionof call attractiveness in a communication network.  相似文献

A new model is proposed which relates the weight of plants totheir spatial arrangement. The weight of each plant is calculatedas the integral of the function f(r) = L(cr2 + 1)–2 overan area allocated to it, r being distance from the plant, withL and c parameters to be specified. The model is thus concise,general, in that it can be used to describe the effects of anyspatial arrangement on plant weight, and the parameters L andc have a biological interpretation. It is also consistent withthe commonly-used relationship between plant weight (w) anddensity (p), w–1 = a+bp. We show for carrots (Daucus carota L.) and red beet (Beta vulgarisL.), that the mean weights fitted by the model agree as wellwith the experimentally observed mean plot weight as those fittedby more complex models with more parameters, some of which arenot as general. We show also that the parameter c can be predictedfrom the time from sowing to harvest, with good results whentested on sets of data independent of those to which the modelhad been fitted. A method of quantifying the heterogeneity of dormancy withinseed populations is described. The method compares germinationresponses of unstratified and stratified seeds of Pinus taedaL. (loblolly pine). Mathematical functions were fitted to cumulativegermination curves of unstratified and stratified seeds andfunctions were integrated to determine areas beneath respectivecurves. The area between respective curves was calculated bydifference and was considered to be a measure of dormancy withinseed lots. Normal mitochondrial function is a critical factor in maintaining cellular homeostasis in various organs of the body. Due to the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in many pathological states, the real-time in vivo monitoring of the mitochondrial metabolic state is crucially important. This type of monitoring in animal models as well as in patients provides real-time data that can help interpret experimental results or optimize patient treatment. The goals of the present review are the following: 1) to provide an historical overview of NADH fluorescence monitoring and its physiological significance; 2) to present the solid scientific ground underlying NADH fluorescence measurements based on published materials; 3) to provide the reader with basic information on the methodologies used in the past and the current state of the art fluorometers; and 4) to clarify the various factors affecting monitored signals, including artifacts. The large numbers of publications by different groups testify to the valuable information gathered in various experimental conditions. The monitoring of NADH levels in the tissue provides the most important information on the metabolic state of the mitochondria in terms of energy production and intracellular oxygen levels. Although NADH signals are not calibrated in absolute units, their trend monitoring is important for the interpretation of physiological or pathological situations. To understand tissue function better, the multiparametric approach has been developed where NADH serves as the key parameter. Aqueous foliar sprays of N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid (daminozide)at 2000 p.p.m. and gibberellic acid (GA) at 100 p.p.m. wereapplied 45, 59, 82 and 100 days after sowing to Chantenay carrotswith population densities of 244, 495 and 883 plants m–2.The plants were harvested on ten approximately weekly occasions;fresh weights were determined and d. wt estimates were obtainedfor the separated shoots (s) and roots (r). Allometric linearregressions of the logarithm of s on that of r at each harvestseparately, clearly showed that GA always increased shoot: rootratio and reduced root yield (by approximately 35 per cent)but could sometimes also increase whole-plant weight. Daminozideincreased root yield (by approximately 7 per cent from 80 tonnesha–1) and tended to have effects opposite to those ofGA. Enzyme indices of zooplankton respiration, citrate synthase(CS), and ammonia excretion rate, glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH),were measured in cultures of Artemia franciscana (San FranciscoBay) feeding in a 25-fold range of concentration of the algaDunaliella salina. Enzyme activities per animal were regressedagainst body size (expressed as dry weight or protein) in theform of the allometric equation, log Y = log a + b logW. CSactivity was related to size with a scaling exponent (b) of1.133 in terms of dry weight and 0.864 in terms of protein.GDH scaling exponents were 1.283 and 0.978 for dry weight andprotein, respectively. In cases where these variables are measured,it is essential that the size structure of populations and communitiessampled is taken into account, otherwise false conclusions maybe drawn. Despite specific growth rate variation from 0.117to 1.188 day–1, no differences in CS or GDH activity couldbe attributed to feeding level or growth rate effects. Suchenzymatic indices, which represent only maximum potential metabolicrates, may therefore be poor predictors of actual rates in vivo.  相似文献

Prediction of water relations attributes for red pine (Pinusresinosa Ait.) derived from pressure-volume (PV) curves varieddepending on which of three methods was used. The sap expressionmethod entailed the enclosure of a shoot in a pressure chamberand expression of xylem sap by applying a constant selectedpressure until sap flow ceased, at which point xylem water potentialand shoot weight were measured. A sap expression PV curve wasformed by aggregating pairs of water potential-weight measurements,each pair supplied by one of 25 shoots. The repeat pressurizationmethod involved repeatedly measuring xylem water potential andshoot weight on a single shoot drying on a laboratory bench.Repeat pressurization PV curves were constructed from data providedby a single shoot. The composite method utilized single measurementsof xylem water potential and shoot weight on 25-30 differentshoots ranging in relative water content from about 1.0 to 0.5achieved by bench drying. Composite PV curves were constructedfrom aggregate data supplied by a population of shoots. Therewas close agreement in all PV attributes generated using repeatpressurization and sap expression methods. In contrast, withthe composite PV method, there was a fundamental differencein the slope of the linear region of the PV curves, causingosmotic potentials at full turgor and turgor loss to be morenegative, and relative water content at turgor loss to be lowerand symplast fraction to be higher. Comparison of compositeand repeat pressurization PV curves over the same ranges inwater content did not eliminate differences in derived waterrelations attributes. Differences in water potential isothermsrelated to the PV procedures used suggest that prolongedor repeatedexposure to gas at high pressure may introduce errors in theestimation of water relations attributes. 以棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner)室内敏感品系和田间品系为寄主,研究了亚致死浓度的Bt杀虫蛋白对中红侧沟茧蜂Microplitis mediator (Haliday)生长发育的影响。结果表明: 当寄主一直取食,或者在被寄生前12小时开始取食含Bt杀虫蛋白浓度为0,0.5,1.0, 2.0,4.0,8.0 μg/g的饲料时,与对照相比,中红侧沟茧蜂的卵-幼虫历期延长,茧重和成虫体重降低,成虫寿命缩短,但对茧期没有明显影响。Bt杀虫蛋白能有效抑制两个棉铃虫品系幼虫的生长,显著降低棉铃虫蛹重;当Bt蛋白浓度为4.0 μg/g时,显著降低棉铃虫化蛹率。用转双基因抗虫棉SGK321(表达Cry1A+CpTI蛋白)饲喂两个棉铃虫品系初孵幼虫,室内品系的第2、3、4和5天校正死亡率分别为48.5%、87.8%、96.6%和 95.8%,显著高于田间品系(30.9%、59.6%、80.9%及86.1%)。本研究表明,不论是田间品系还是室内品系,棉铃虫取食含Bt杀虫蛋白的饲料后,对中红侧沟茧蜂的生长发育都具有显著的负面作用。  相似文献

In a field experiment to investigate the physiological causesof variation in yield between autumn- and spring-sown wheatand between old and new varieties, the grain yields of the winterwheats were 3-15 per cent, greater than of the spring ones andthe new varieties Cappelle-Desprez and Jufy I yielded 40-70per cent, more than Squarehead's Master and Atle. Nitrogen fertilizerincreased the yields of Cappelle-Desprez and Jufy I more thanof Atle, and decreased the yield of Squarehead's Master by makingit lodge. Until ear emergence the winter varieties had greater leaf-areaindices (L) and dry weights, but smaller net assimilation rates(E), than the spring varieties. Square-head's Master had greaterL but smaller E, and similar dry weight to Cappelle-Desprez.Jufy I had similar E to Atlc, but greater L and dry weight.Nitrogen increased L and dry weight, but decreased E. All thedifferences in E between varieties and nitrogen treatments couldbe explained by the opposite effects on L, that is to say, thedifferences in E were caused by variation in mutual shadingarising from the differences in L and not by changes in leafphysiology. L of winter wheat reached its maximum at the end of May, butL of spring wheat continued to increase until ear emergence.Afterwards Ldecreased more rapidly for winter than for springwheat, so that eventually spring wheat had the greater L. Thesedifferences in the time changes of L partially compensated forthe shorter growth period of spring wheat, and tended to equalizethe grain yield from winter and spring sowings. After ear emergence total dry weight of winter varieties continuedto be greater than of spring ones, but the difference in dryweight of ears was much smaller because ear: shoot dry-weightratio was greater for the spring varieties. Total dry weight,ear dry weight and ear: shoot ratio were all greater in thenew than in the old varieties. Leaf area duration (D) afterear emergence was slightly greater for the winter than for thespring varieties and similar for old and new. The apparent efficiencyof this leaf area in grain production, measured by the grainleaf ratio (ratio of grain dry weight to D), was similar forwinter and spring varieties but greater for new than for old.This suggests that Cappelle-Desprez and Jufy I have higher grainyields because their ears photosynthesize more than do the earsof Squarehead's Master and Atle. Before ear emergence winter varieties had more shoots than springones, and old varieties more than new. After ear emergence therewere only small differences in numbers of ears; percentage survivalwas greater for spring than for winter and for new than forold varieties. Some animals use communication signals to assess their opponent'ssize and fighting ability during aggressive conflicts. Malefrogs assess their opponent's size based on the fundamentalfrequency (pitch) of advertisement calls, which is negativelycorrelated with body size, an important determinant of fightingability in frogs. I conducted a field playback experiment to investigate whether territorial male bullfrogs assess the sizeof opponents based solely on size-related variation in fundamentalfrequency. I repeatedly broadcast synthetic bullfrog advertisementcalls to three groups of males. Playback stimuli simulateda large male (n = 24), a small male (n = 24), or an acousticallysize-matched male (n = 34). Neither the simulated size of theopponent, the subject's own size, nor the degree of size asymmetrybetween the subject and simulated intruder had significanteffects on the magnitude of responses during the playback testor on the rate of habituation that occurred with repeated stimulation.Post-hoc analyses of effect sizes and statistical power indicatedthat the effects in this study were quite small compared toprevious studies in other frogs. More important, power analysesindicated that this study had high power (1 - ß >0.90) to detect the magnitude of effect sizes observed in previous studies. Thus, territorial male bullfrogs do not appear to assessan opponent's fighting ability based solely on the fundamentalfrequency of acoustic signals.
