The potential activity of methane production was determined in the vertical profiles of the peat deposits of three bogs in Tver oblast, which were representative of the boreal zone. In the minerotrophic fen, the rates of methane production measured throughout the profile did not change significantly with depth and comprised 3-6 ng CH4-C g(-1) h(-1). In ombrotrophic peat bogs, the rate did not exceed 5 ng CH4-C g(-1) h(-1) in the upper layer of the profile (up to 1.5 m) and increased to 15-30 ng CH4-C g(-1) h(-1) in the deep layers of the peat deposits. The distribution of fermentative microorganisms and methanogens in the profiles of peat deposits was uniform in all the studied bogs. In bog water samples, the presence of butyrate (up to 14.1 mg l(-1)) and acetate (up to 2.4 mg l(-1)) was revealed throughout the whole profile; in the upper 0.5-m layer of the ombrotrophic bogs, formate (up to 8.9 mg l(-1)) and propionate (up to 0.3 mg l(-1)) were detected as well. The arrangement of local maxima of the fatty acid content and methanogenic activity in the peat deposits, as well as the decrease in the acetate concentrations during summer, support the hypothesis that the initial substrates for methanogenesis come from the upper peat layers. It was established that the addition of sulfate and nitrate inhibits methane production in peat samples: the changes in the concentrations, recorded in situ, may also influence the methane content in peat layers. 相似文献

Scavengers can have strong impacts on food webs, and awareness of their role in ecosystems has increased during the last decades. In our study, we used baited camera traps to quantify the structure of the winter scavenger community in central Scandinavia across a forest–alpine continuum and assess how climatic conditions affected spatial patterns of species occurrences at baits. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that the main habitat type (forest or alpine tundra) and snow depth was main determinants of the community structure. According to a joint species distribution model within the HMSC framework, species richness tended to be higher in forest than in alpine tundra habitat, but was only weakly associated with temperature and snow depth. However, we observed stronger and more diverse impacts of these covariates on individual species. Occurrence at baits by habitat generalists (red fox, golden eagle, and common raven) typically increased at low temperatures and high snow depth, probably due to increased energetic demands and lower abundance of natural prey in harsh winter conditions. On the contrary, occurrence at baits by forest specialists (e.g., Eurasian jay) tended to decrease in deep snow, which is possibly a consequence of reduced bait detectability and accessibility. In general, the influence of environmental covariates on species richness and occurrence at baits was lower in alpine tundra than in forests, and habitat generalists dominated the scavenger communities in both forest and alpine tundra. Following forecasted climate change, altered environmental conditions are likely to cause range expansion of boreal species and range contraction of typical alpine species such as the arctic fox. Bacteria of the genus Burkholderia are a typical component of the microbial complex of sphagnum peat bogs and constitute a substantial portion of the aerobic chemoorganotrophic isolates which are routinely obtained from these environments on acidic nutrient media. The ecophysiological characteristics of the 27 strains of such organisms, which were isolated from the peat of acidic sphagnum bogs of the boreal and tundra zones of Russia, Canada, and Estonia, were investigated in the present paper. The overwhelming majority of the Burkholderia strains isolated from these bogs were phylogenetically close to the species B. glathei, B. phenazinium, B. fungorum, and B. caryophylli, the typical inhabitants of soil and plant rhizosphere. The bog isolates utilized a broad range of substrates as carbon and energy sources, including organic acids, sugars, polyalcohols, and certain aromatic compounds. All the strains studied were capable of growth on nitrogen-free media. They developed in the pH ranges of 3.5 to 7.4 and from 3 to 37 degrees C, with the optima at pH 5-7 and 11-23 degrees C, respectively. They were therefore moderately acidophilic, psychroactive, dinitrogen-fixing microorganisms well adapted to the conditions of acidic northern sphagnum bogs. 相似文献

The visual uniformity of tropical peat swamp forest masks the considerable variation in forest structure that has evolved in response to differences and changes in peat characteristics over many millennia. Details are presented of forest structure and tree composition of the principal peat swamp forest types in the upper catchment of Sungai Sebangau, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, in relation to thickness and hydrology of the peat. Consideration is given to data on peat geochemistry and age of peat that provide evidence of the ombrotrophic nature of this vast peatland and its mode of formation. The future sustainability of this ecosystem is predicted from information available on climate change and human impact in this region. 相似文献

Soil abiotic factors are considered to be important in determining the distribution of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal species; however, there are few field data to support this. Here, we relate ECM species distributions to changes in soil chemistry along a short (90-m), natural nutrient gradient. The ECM community was characterized, using morphological and molecular techniques, in soil samples collected at 10-m intervals. There were pronounced changes in ECM fungal community structure along the transect, with many taxa showing discrete distributions. Although there was a change of host from Pinus to Picea along the gradient, host-specific fungi did not account for the observed change in community structure. Ordination analyses showed that community structure was strongly correlated with soil characteristics, in particular extractable ammonium and base saturation. However, autocorrelation among soil parameters makes it difficult to isolate the effects of individual parameters. The distinctive changes in soil and vegetation along the transect used in this study provided an exceptional opportunity to examine the local-scale impact of natural spatial heterogeneity on an ECM fungal community. 相似文献

This study concerns the mass balance in hummocks and hollows on three ombrotrophic boreonemoral bogs in both a short (ca 10 yr) and long (1000 yr) time scale. Nitrogen, 14C. and ?210Pb are used to establish detailed time scales and to estimate productivity and decay losses in tour different microtopographical units: hummocks with either Sphagnum or lichens and hollows with either Sphagnum lawns or bare hollows. The accumulation of N and 210Pb was greater in hummocks than in hollows. The litter input was higher in Sphagnum hummocks (170-210 g m?2yr?1) than in lawns (110-145 g m ?2- yr?1) while its decay rate (0.011 -0.014 yr?1) did not differ. The arotelm was deeper in Sphagnum hummocks than in lawns but because of less compaction in lawns, neither residence time (80 100 yr) nor decay losses (70-75%) differed. Productivity in lichen hummocks and bare hollows was insignificant and the mass balance negative. It is concluded that the higher productivity in Sphugnum hummocks maintains the microtopography on the mire surface. The mass balance in hummocks will determine not only the development in hollows but also the rise of the ground water mound, and the height increment of a bog. The addition of mass to the catotelm has generally been less in hollows than in hummocks. Since 800 BP the overall input to the catotelm has decreased from about 150 to < 50 g m ?2 yr?1 due to longer residence time increasing losses through decay in the acrotelm from < 20% to 70% and is the result of either climatic changes or autogenic processes in the bog ecosystem. Before recent centuries the whole bog surface must have been covered with Sphagnum mosses, forming an overall input of litter as large as in the recent Sphagnum hummocks and lawns. Due to the present lesser cover of peat forming mosses (20-50% of the surface), the recent overall input of peat-forming litter is only 50-65 g m?2 yr?1. The bogs no longer act as sinks for carbon since the input of carbon only just covers the losses as CH4 and CO2. 相似文献

Significant spatial variation in species composition of microphytobenthos often occurs at scales of decimetres. This microscale variation is typically more connected with dispersal-related events than to environmental factors. In this study, 4 microscale transects were delimited at 4 temperate lowland peat bog localities to investigate spatial and temporal microscale variations in benthic desmids (Desmidiales, Viridiplantae). Significant spatial autocorrelation was detected in most of the transects taken 3 times, in September and December 2010 and March 2011. The relative abundance of species data produced more pronounced spatial patterns than the presence?Cabsence data. Spatial autocorrelation mostly decreased during the winter period, possibly due to meteorological disturbances, resulting in less spatially structured phytobenthic community in the March transects. In most cases, spatial distance accounted for a significant part of the variation in a community structure, even in analyses that controlled for the effects of environmental and temporal factors. This indicated that pure spatial factors should be considered important for structuring phytobenthic communities, even across a temporal time span of 6?months. The reduced data sets that included only 25?% of the most frequented species produced very similar patterns in spatial and temporal autocorrelation as the full data sets. Consequently, we concluded that microscale variation of benthic desmids may be sufficiently represented by dynamics of the common species. 相似文献

1. Spatial variation of methane (CH4) efflux from the littoral zone of a meso‐eutrophic boreal lake was studied with a closed‐chamber technique for three summer days in 22 vegetation stands, consisting of three emergent and three floating‐leaved species. 2. Between‐species differences in CH4 emission were significant. The highest emissions were measured from the emergent Phragmites australis stands (0.5–1.7 mmol m?2 h?1), followed by Schoenoplectus lacustris > Equisetum fluviatile > Nuphar lutea > Sparganium gramineum > Potamogeton natans. Within‐species differences between stands were not significant. 3. In P. australis stands, the stand‐specific mean CH4 emission was significantly correlated with solar radiation, probably indicating the role of effective pressurised ventilation on CH4 fluxes. The proportion of net primary production emitted as CH4 was significantly higher in P. australis stands (7.4%) than in stands of S. lacustris and E. fluviatile (both 0.5%). 4. In N. lutea stands, CH4 efflux was negatively correlated with the mean fetch and positively with the percentage cover of leaves on the water surface. There were no differences in CH4 efflux between intact N. lutea leaves and those grazed by coleopteran Galerucella nymphaeae. In S. graminaeum and P. natans stands, CH4 effluxes were not related to any of the measured environmental variables. 5. For all vegetation stands, the biomass above water level explained about 60% of the observed spatial variation in CH4 emission, indicating the important role of plants as gas conduits and producers of substrates for methanogens in the anoxic sediment. 相似文献

The population density of bacteria in peat deposits along the landscape profile of the Vasyugan Marsh has been found to be as high as tens of millions of CFU/g peat. The abundance and diversity of bacteria increased with depth within the peat deposit, correlating with an increasing level of peat degradation. Variations in these parameters with depth and season were greater in peat deposits located in transaccumulative and transitional positions than in the sedge-sphagnum bogs located at the eluvial region of the profile. In the upper 1-m-thick layer of the peat deposits studied, bacilli, represented by five species, dominated, whereas, in the deeper layers, spirilla and myxobacteria prevailed. These bacteria were major degraders of plant polymers. Unlike the bacterial communities found in the peat deposits of European Russia, the dominant taxa in the studied peat deposits of Western Siberia are represented by bacteria resistant to extreme conditions. 相似文献

The virioplankton community structure along a salinity gradient from near seawater (40 per thousand ) to saturated sodium chloride brine (370 per thousand ) in a solar saltern was investigated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Viral populations with genome sizes varying from 10 kb to 533 kb were detected. The viral community structure changed along the salinity gradient. Cluster analysis of the viral genome-banding pattern resulted in two main clusters. The virioplankton diversity within the samples with salinity from 40 per thousand to 150 per thousand was on the same cluster of a cladogram. The other group consisted of virioplankton from samples with salinity above 220 per thousand. The virioplankton diversity in the different samples was calculated using the Shannon index. The diversity index demonstrated an increase in diversity in the samples along the gradient from 40 per thousand to 150 per thousand salinity, followed by a decrease in the diversity index along the rest of the salinity gradient. These results demonstrate how viral diversity changes from habitats that are considered one of the most common (seawater) to habitats that are extreme in salt concentrations (saturated sodium brine). The diversity index was highest in the environments that lie in between the most extreme and the most common. 相似文献

选用赣州-安远稀土弃废尾矿及其不同植被修复的堆浸田为研究对象,调查废弃尾矿及6种不同植被修复方案下土壤理化性质的变化,并利用变性凝胶梯度电泳(DGGE)技术,分析土壤微生物群落结构对植被修复的响应。结果表明:与未修复尾矿土壤相比,经不同植被修复后的土壤理化性质均得到明显改良,其中土壤含水量、有机质含量均比未修复尾矿土壤增加2—3倍。微生物群落结构分析表明,植被修复后土壤微生物群落与废弃尾矿土壤微生物群落亲缘度仅为0.21,表明植被修复后,土壤微生物群落结构发生了明显变化,且微生物多样性、均匀度、丰富度与未修复尾矿土壤相比均有了明显的提高。而在不同植被修复方案中,以湿地松和山胡椒为优势群落的两种植被修复方案对土壤改良效果最为明显,这两种修复方案不仅能显著改善土壤的固水性、有机质含量,并且对微生物群落的改善作用也最为显著。典范对应分析表明,废弃尾矿土壤微生物群落结构受土壤p H影响最为显著,而植被修复后土壤微生物群落的环境影响因子则转变为含水量、有机质、有机碳及总磷含量。进一步揭示了微生物在植被修复过程中所起到的重要作用,并为矿山生态重建过程中的土壤改良工作提供了丰富的理论依据。 相似文献

Patch isolation resulting from habitat loss and fragmentation generally has detrimental effects on associated species. Peatlands may be especially sensitive to such effects because peat mining results in drastic changes in the hydrology of natural remnants. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of conservation zones surrounding ponds in mined bogs for two taxa: songbirds and odonates. We compared songbird distribution and odonate assemblages between ponds isolated by peat mining (n=6–12) and control ponds (n=11–13) located in natural bogs. Birds did not show major responses to pond isolation, whether in terms of their relative abundance or reproductive activity. However, longer‐term data would be required to confirm this trend. In contrast, odonate abundance, as estimated from exuviae, was higher in natural ponds than in isolated ones. Some taxa, especially bog specialists, were more sensitive than others. Hence, pond isolation by peat mining significantly altered the structure of odonate assemblages. Pond size also influenced odonate abundances and distribution. Effective conservation of bog ponds should account not only for variations in the response of different taxa, but also for pond structural diversity, which influence species response to isolation. 相似文献

Environmental factors controlling the distribution and abundance of boreal avifauna are not fully understood, limiting our ability to predict the consequences of a changing climate and industrial development activities underway. We used a compilation of avian point‐count data, collected over 1990–2008 from nearly 36 000 locations, to model the abundance of individual forest songbird species within the Canadian boreal forest. We evaluated 30 vegetation and 101 climatic variables, representing most of the widely‐used dimensions of climate space, along with less usual measures of inter‐annual variability. Regression tree models allowed us to calculate the relative importance of climate and vegetation variable classes according to avian migration strategy without the need for a priori variable selection or dimension reduction. We tested for hierarchical habitat selection by formulating hypotheses on the locations of variables within the model tree structures. Climate variables explained the majority (77%) of deviance explained over 98 species modelled. As may be expected at high latitudes, we found energy availability (temperature, 65%) to be more important than moisture availability (precipitation, 12%). The contributions of inter‐ and intra‐annual climate variability (28%) were about half that of mean conditions. The relatively large contribution of remotely‐sensed vegetation metrics (23%) highlighted the importance of local vegetation heterogeneity controlled by non‐climatic factors. The two most important vegetation variables were landcover type and April leaf area index. When selected, these generally occurred in a model's right subtree, consistent with predictions from hierarchical habitat selection theory. When occupying the root node, landcover effectively delineated the historical forest‐prairie ecotone, reflecting the current disequilibrium between climate and vegetation due to human land use. Our findings suggest a large potential for avian distributional shifts in response to climate change, but also demonstrate the importance of finer scale vegetation heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of boreal birds. 相似文献

The zooplankton community was surveyed along the longitudinalaxis of Rimov Reservoir (Czech Republic) on seven occasionsduring the vegetative season of 1996. The dimictic Rimov Reservoirhas a pronounced trophic gradient along its axis. In nearlyall samples, rotifers were dominant by numbers and formed onaverage 6095% of the total zooplankton (including copepodnauplii). There was a consistent pattern of increasing relativeabundance of rotifers in the upper regions of the reservoircompared with the downstream parts. Very large rotifer populationscould develop in the upper regions, often associated with floodevents, but also coinciding with reduced abundance of crustaceansassociated with stronger wash-out effects and the advent ofturbid conditions. There was a greater similarity between twoadjacent sites in the proportions of crustacean species thanof rotifer species. This is partially due to the greater speciesdiversity of rotifers than of crustaceans. The timing of theseasonal succession of zooplankton species showed a coherentpattern along the whole longitudinal profile. The site-specificzooplankton patchiness seems to be reduced as there was no sitedependence if average data on zooplankton composition from downstreamlacustrine sites were compared. 相似文献

This study aims at assessing the suitability of Hylocomium splendens as a biomonitor for heavy metal deposition and contributing
to the understanding of mineral nutrient uptake mechanisms in forest floor bryophytes. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Cd, Cu
and Pb were determined in Hylocomium splendens segment samples collected at 196 permanent vegetation plots from eleven monitoring
areas, where the vegetation-environment relationships had previously been thoroughly studied. Element concentrations in Hylocomium
splendens were related to environmentally interpreted vegetational gradients, cover of understorey vascular plants, and local
environmental conditions, including element concentrations in humus, soil moisture and tree impact, by means of correlation
analyses performed separately for each area. A combined test was performed for each Hylocomium splendens variable over all
eleven areas, showing that concentrations of Ca, Cd and Mg in Hylocomium splendens were strongly correlated with the main
vegetational gradient and with pH and concentrations of Ca and total N in humus, indicating considerable uptake of nutrients
by Hylocomium splendens from water that has been in contact with humus. These relationships were less strong in the climatically
most humid areas. Concentrations of all elements were more or less strongly correlated with one or more variables reflecting
tree influence (tree density as measured by basal area and two crown influence indices) reflecting that throughfall precipitation,
modified by leaching from the canopy, partly accounts for input of elements, especially for K, Cd and Mg. Only concentrations
of Pb, Cd and Cu were significantly correlated, negatively, with vascular plant cover, indicating that supply of elements
by leaching from understorey vascular plant foliage is negligible. The concentration of Cu in Hylocomium splendens was only
weakly correlated, and the concentration of Pb unrelated to vegetational gradients and most environmental conditions. The
results indicate that atmospheric deposition accounts for most of the input of Pb, confirming the suitability of Hylocomium
splendens as a biomonitor for this element. For elements such as Cd local environmental conditions should be carefully considered,
even when data from regional moss surveys are to be interpreted.
