Fatty acid metabolism and triacylglycerol synthesis are critical processes for the survival of hibernating mammals that undergo a prolonged fasting period. Fatty acid synthase, fatty-acid-CoA ligase, diacylglycerol acyltransferase, and monoacylglycerol acyltransferase activities were measured in liver and in white and brown adipose tissue, in order to determine whether enzymes of lipogenesis and triacylglycerol synthesis vary seasonally during hibernation in the yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris). Compared with mid-winter hibernation, fatty acid synthase activity was higher in all three tissues during early spring when marmots emerged from hibernation and in mid-summer when they were feeding, consistent with the synthesis of fatty acids from the carbohydrate-rich summer diet. Fatty-acid-CoA ligase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase activities were highest in summer in white adipose tissue when triacylglycerol synthesis would be expected to be high; diacylglycerol acyltransferase activity was also high in brown adipose tissue during spring and summer. In liver, however, diacylglycerol acyltransferase specific activity was highest during hibernation, suggesting that triacylglycerol synthesis may be prominent in liver in winter. Monoacylglycerol acyltransferase activity, which may aid in the retention of essential fatty-acids, was 80-fold higher in liver than in white or brown adipose tissue, but did not vary seasonally. Its dependence on palmitoyl-CoA suggests that a divalent cation might play a role in enzyme activation. The high hepatic diacylglycerol acyltransferase activity during hibernation suggests that the metabolism of very low density lipoprotein may be important in the movement of adipose fatty acids to brown adipose tissue and muscle during the rewarming that occurs periodically during hibernation. Among the 14 extant species of the genus Marmota the Vancouver Island marmot (Marmota vancouverensis) is the most endangered. In 2007 as few as 85 individuals were left in the wild, with an additional 162 individuals maintained in captivity. To facilitate genetic monitoring of both wild and captive populations, polymorphic genetic markers were identified. Thirty-three different microsatellite loci were tested for amplification and variability in ≥30 wild-born individuals. Only 11 of these loci proved to be polymorphic and were subsequently analysed in 105 samples collected from wild Vancouver Island marmots. The average number of alleles (A) at those 11 loci was only 2.1, and the intraspecific variation (H E between 8 and 23% within colonies) was low compared to other marmot species. Variation within the small and geographically isolated Mt. Washington colony was particularly low (A = 1.3, H E = 0.08). Genetic distances between the Mt. Washington colony (11 individuals) and those of the Nanaimo Lakes region (94 individuals) on southern Vancouver Island were large (D values ranging from 0.42 to 0.50), while genetic distances among colonies within the latter area were much smaller (D values from 0.01 to 0.13). Given the low within-population genetic variation, and the resulting risk of inbreeding depression at Mt. Washington, we support the decision to maximize overall genetic variation of the species by crossbreeding marmots from the two different areas despite the possibility of local adaptation.  相似文献

Previous studies on laboratory rodents, rabbits, and humans have demonstrated that adipose tissue fatty acid (FA) mobilization is selective, and its efficiency is related to the molecular structure of FAs. This study was undertaken to find out whether such preferences of FA mobilization are a general feature of mammalian white adipose tissue (WAT) and are also manifested in carnivores. Fractional mobilization of a wide spectrum of FAs was studied by gas-liquid chromatography from six subcutaneous (scapular, rump, ventral) and intra-abdominal (omental, mesenteric, retroperitoneal) WAT depots of raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) fed or fasted for 2 months. Fasting stimulated the mobilization of shorter-chain saturated, mono-unsaturated (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs). The effects of unsaturation and the position of the first double bond from the methyl end were more inconsistent. The effect of double-bond position may be due to chain shortening of longer-chain MUFAs and preferential utilization of n-3 PUFAs over n-6 PUFAs. Moreover, there were site-specific differences in fractional mobilization, the omental adipose tissue being the most divergent. The in vivo FA mobilization from the regional WAT depots of a carnivore was selective, and the molecular structure of the FA affected its efficiency.  相似文献

The edible dormouse (Glis glis) is a small rodent and an obligate hibernator. Dormice undergo strong fluctuations of reproductive output during years that seem to be timed to coincide with future food supply. This behaviour enables them to avoid producing young that will starve with a high probability due to food shortage, and to increase their lifetime reproductive success. Aims of this study were to elucidate the extent to which feeding ecology in the edible dormouse has an impact on body mass and the fatty acid (FA) pattern of the white adipose tissue (WAT) before and after hibernation, which in turn might influence reproductive status in spring. Dormice show strong seasonal fluctuations of the body mass, which is reduced by one third during hibernation. Body mass and its changes depend on autumnal food availability as well as on the dietary FA pattern. During the pre-hibernation fattening period, dormice eat lipid rich food with a high content of linoleic acid. During hibernation, linoleic acid content is slightly but significantly reduced and body mass loss during winter is negatively correlated with the pre-hibernation linoleic acid content in the WAT. No relation between reproductive status and body mass, body condition or the FAs pattern of the WAT could be detected. However, in a year of high reproduction, dormice commence the shift to seed eating earlier than in a year of low reproduction. These seeds could be either a predictor for future food supply in autumn, or represent a high-energy food compensating high energetic costs of sexual activity in male edible dormice.  相似文献

In project DyAdd, we compared the fatty acid (FA) profiles of serum phospholipids in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n=26), dyslexia (n=36), their comorbid combination (n=9), and healthy controls (n=36). FA proportions were analyzed in a 2×2 design with Bonferroni corrected post hoc comparisons. A questionnaire was used to assess dietary fat quality and use of supplements. Results showed that ADHD and dyslexia were not associated with total saturated FAs, monounsaturated FAs, or n-3 polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs). However, those with ADHD had elevated proportions of total n-6 PUFAs (including γ-linolenic and adrenic acids) as compared to those without ADHD. Dyslexia was related to a higher proportion of monounsaturated nervonic acid and a higher ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFAs. Among females none of the associations were significant. However in males, all the original associations observed in all subjects remained and ADHD was associated with elevated nervonic acid and n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio like dyslexia. Controlling for poorly diagnosed reading difficulties, education, dietary fat quality, or use of FA supplements did not generally remove the originally observed associations.  相似文献

Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) are herbivores that hibernate during winter. Although little is known about the nutritional/physiological constraints on hibernation, numerous studies have demonstrated that increasing the amount of linoleic acid (a polyunsaturated fatty acid) in the diet enhances hibernation. This is probably because high linoleic acid diets reduce the melting points of the depot fats produced for hibernation which makes them more metabolizable at low body temperatures. This suggests that a major limitation on hibernation may be obtaining enough linoleic acid in the diet for proper hibernation. In all previous studies, however, the amount of linoleic acid in the diets of free-ranging animals was either not considered, or the range of dietary linoleic acid contents in the experiments was less than that of natural diets. It is thus not known whether the amount of linoleic acid available to hibernators under natural conditions actually limits their torpor patterns. A series of laboratory feeding and hibernation experiments were conducted with S. lateralis and artificial diets with different linoleic acid contents that were either below or above the linoleic acid content of the natural diet. The results demonstrated that when dietary linoleic acid contents are either below or above natural levels, hibernation ability is greatly reduced. Hibernation ability was reduced when the squirrels were maintained on a high linoleic acid diet probably by the production of toxic lipid peroxides in brown adipose tissues. The results indicate that there is an optimal level of dietary linoleic acid for proper hibernation, and this is equal to that of the natural diet. Summary Adult male Richardson's ground squirrels,Spermophilus richardsonii, were estimated to have emerged from hibernation in late February to early March, and adult females in mid to late March. Half of the females trapped in late March were not pregnant, as against 10% after that time. In late March males and all females had similar WAT (white adipose tissue) deposits. Between late March and early June, WAT deposits in males increased from 14 g to 64 g (a rate of 5.6 g per week). In non-parous females WAT deposits increased from 13 g to 48 g from late March to late May (4.2 g per week). Fat deposits decreased during lactation but thereafter increased from 8 g to 29 g (a rate of 6.0 g per week) between early May and early June. In males the rate of fatty acid synthesis in BAT (brown adipose tissue), liver and WAT did not change from late March to late May, and rates in the corresponding tissues of non-pregnant females were similar to those in males. Fatty acid synthesis decreased during late pregnancy and lactation. After lactation, the rate of fatty acid synthesis in all tissues increased to that in males and non-pregnant females. Males initiated fattening 5–7 weeks earlier than females. It is concluded that compared with adult males, the later immergence of adult female Richardson's ground squirrels into hibernation is due primarily to later initiation of fattening and less to differences in rate of lipid synthesis after the reproductive period. Rates of fatty acid synthesis in liver and BAT were several times greater than that in WAT. Blubber fatty acid(s) (FA) signatures can provide accurate estimates of predator diets using quantitative FA signature analysis, provided that aspects of predator FA metabolism are taken into account. Because the intestinal absorption of dietary FA and their incorporation into chylomicrons (the primary transport lipoproteins for dietary FA in the blood) may influence the relationship between FA composition in the diet and adipose tissue, we investigated the metabolism of individual FA at these early stages of assimilation. We also investigated the capacity of chylomicron signatures to provide quantitative estimates of prey composition of an experimental meal. Six captive juvenile grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) were fed either 2.3 kg (n=3) or 4.6 kg (n=3) of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). Although chylomicron FA signatures resembled diet signatures at all samplings, absolute differences were smallest at 3-h post-feeding, when chylomicrons were likely largest and had the greatest ratio of triacylglycerol to phospholipid FA. Specific FA that differed significantly between diet and chylomicron signatures reflected either input from endogenous sources or loss through peroxisomal -oxidation. When these aspects of metabolism were accounted for, the quantitative predictions of diet composition generated using chylomicron signatures were extremely accurate, even when tested against 28 other prey items.  相似文献

The Vancouver Island marmot (Marmota vancouverensis; VIM) is one of North America's most endangered species with fewer than 150 individuals remaining in the wild. A captive breeding program was established across four facilities in Canada as an insurance population and source of animals for reintroduction to the wild. The purpose of this study was to gather information about the basic reproductive biology and behavior of this species, which is essential to improve captive breeding programs. Regular fecal samples were obtained from adult female (n = 14) and male (n = 10) marmots, 2 years of age and older, over 1-3 breeding seasons (2-3 months duration posthibernation) for steroid hormone analysis. Enzyme immunoassays were validated for quantifying fecal testosterone metabolite concentrations for males, and fecal estrogen and progesterone metabolite concentrations for females. Results indicated that fecal progesterone metabolite concentrations can be used to monitor ovulation and pregnancy. Behavioral monitoring through infrared video surveillance was conducted in four breeding pairs over a 2-year period (n = 7 behavioral profiles). Breeding behaviors correlated strongly with changes in reproductive endocrine profiles. A high frequency of play behavior or "wrestling" was observed in conjunction with breeding activity before an elevation in progesterone metabolite concentrations. Impending parturition was associated with increased aggression and exclusion of the male from the maternal nestbox as well as an increase in nesting activity. Observational data combined with hormonal analysis suggest that female VIMs are induced ovulators and that multiple breeding attempts may be required for ovulation and conception. Gestation appears to be approximately 34 days from peak breeding activity (32 days from estimated ovulation). Fecal testosterone concentrations suggest that testicular activity is seasonal with the reproductive activity occurring immediately posthibernation. Monitoring breeding behavior is a useful means of indicating estrus, conception and pregnancy, which can also be supported by the hormonal analysis of daily fecal samples of individual animals.  相似文献

Fatty acid (FA) release from white adipose tissue (WAT) is the result of the balance between triglyceride breakdown and FA re-esterification. The latter relies on the induction of cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK-C), the key enzyme for glyceroneogenesis. We previously demonstrated that long-term (18 h) leptin treatment of rat epididymal WAT explants reduced glyceroneogenesis through nitric oxide (NO)-induced decrease in PEPCK-C expression. We investigated the effect of a short-term leptin treatment (2 h) on PEPCK-C expression and glyceroneogenesis in relation to NO production. We demonstrate that in WAT explants, leptin-induced NO synthase III (NOS III) phosphorylation was associated with reduced PEPCK-C level and glyceroneogenesis, leading to FA release, while PEPCK-C gene expression remained unaffected. These effects were absent in WAT explants from leptin receptor-deficient Zucker rat. Immunoprecipitation and western blot experiments showed that the leptin-induced decrease in PEPCK-C level was correlated with an increase in PEPCK-C nitration. All these effects were abolished by the NOS inhibitor Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and mimicked by the NO donor S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL penicillamine. We propose a mechanism in which leptin activates NOS III and induces NO that nitrates PEPCK-C to reduce its level and glyceroneogenesis, therefore limiting FA re-esterification in WAT.  相似文献

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can have strong effects on hibernation and daily torpor in mammals. High dietary PUFA contents were found to increase proneness for torpor, decrease body temperatures, prolong torpor bout duration, and attenuate hibernation mass loss. The mechanism by which PUFAs enhance torpor and hibernation is unknown, however. On the basis of a review of the literature, and on reexamining our own data on alpine marmots, we propose that effects on hibernation are not due to PUFAs in general, but to shifts in the ratio of n-6 PUFAs to n-3 PUFAs in membrane phospholipids. Specifically, high ratios of n-6 to n-3 PUFAs increase the activity of the Ca2+-Mg2+ pump in the sarcoplasmic reticulum of the heart (SERCA) and counteract Q10 effects on SERCA activity at low tissue temperatures. Therefore, high n-6 to n-3 PUFA ratios in cardiac myocyte membranes appear to protect the hibernating heart from arrhythmia, which in hypothermic nonhibernators is caused by massive increases in cytosolic Ca2+. The resulting reduced risk of cardiac arrest during hypothermia may explain why increased dietary uptake of n-6 PUFAs, but not of n-3 PUFAs, can strongly enhance the propensity for hibernation, and allows heterotherms to reach lower body temperatures, with associated increased energy savings. Therefore, at least for herbivorous hibernators, such as marmots, linoleic acid (C18:2 n-6)--the dietary source of all n-6 PUFAs--appears to represent a crucial and limited resource in natural environments.  相似文献

Objective: Salt restriction has been reported to increase white adipose tissue (WAT) mass in rodents. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different sodium content diets on the lipogenic and lipolytic activities of WAT. Research Methods and Procedures: Male Wistar rats were fed on normal‐sodium (NS; 0.5% Na+), high‐sodium (HS; 3.12% Na+), or low‐sodium (LS; 0.06% Na+) diets for 3, 6, and 9 weeks after weaning. Blood pressure (BP) was measured using a computerized tail‐cuff system. At the end of each period, rats were killed and blood samples were collected for leptin determinations. The WAT from abdominal and inguinal subcutaneous (SC), periepididymal (PE) and retroperitoneal (RP) depots was weighed and processed for adipocyte isolation, rate measurement of lipolysis and d ‐[U‐14C]‐glucose incorporation into lipids, glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and malic enzyme activity evaluation, and determination of G6PDH and leptin mRNA expression. Results: After 6 weeks, HS diet significantly increased BP; SC, PE, and RP WAT masses; PE adipocyte size; plasma leptin concentration; G6PDH activity in SC WAT; and PE depots and malic activity only in SC WAT. The leptin levels correlated positively with WAT masses and adipocyte size. An increase in the basal and isoproterenol‐stimulated lipolysis and in the ability to incorporate glucose into lipids was observed in isolated adipocytes from HS rats. Discussion: HS diet induced higher adiposity characterized by high plasma leptin concentration and adipocyte hypertrophy, probably due to an increased lipogenic capacity of WAT.  相似文献

Prior to hibernation, mammals accumulate large amounts of fat in their bodies. In temperate mammalian species, hibernation is improved by increasing the levels of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the body. The saturation of fatty acids (FA) in both white adipose tissue (WAT) and membrane phospholipids of mammals often reflects their diet composition. We found that the greater mouse-tailed bat (Rhinopoma microphyllum) accumulates large amounts of fat at the end of summer by gradually shifting to a fat-rich diet (queen carpenter ants, Camponotus felah). PUFA are almost absent in this diet (<1 % of total FA), which contains a high fraction of saturated (SFA) and mono-unsaturated (MUFA) fatty acids. We found similar low levels of PUFA in mouse-tailed bat WAT, but not in their heart total lipids. The expression of two appetite-stimulating (orexigenic) hypothalamic neuropeptides, AgRP and NPY, increased in parallel to the shift in diet and with fat gain in these bats. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only documented example of specific pre-hibernation diet in bats, and one which reveals the most saturated FA composition ever documented in a mammal. We suggest that the increase in expression levels of NPY and AgRP may contribute to the observed diet shift and mass gain, and that the FA composition of the bat’s specialized diet is adaptive in the relatively high temperatures we recorded in both their winter and summer roosts.  相似文献

Summary The effects of dietary fat saturation and fat content on hibernation and several properties of white and brown adipose tissue (WAT and BAT, respectively) were investigated in Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti). Male hamsters were housed in a long photoperiod (LD 16:8) at 23°C and fed one of three diets: (1) chow (6.5% fat per weight), (2) chow+13.5% vegetable oil (OIL, 20% fat per weight [largely unsaturated fat]) and (3) chow+13.5% vegetable shortening [SHORTENING, 20% fat per weight (largely saturated fat)]. Five weeks later body weights had stabilized and the animals were transferred to a short photoperiod (LD 8:16) at 3°C. At the peak of the hibernation season (17 weeks) the animals were sacrificed within 24 h of arousal. Chow-fed hamsters had the greatest percentage of animals hibernating and days found torpid compared with the two fat-fed groups, with no differences found between the latter two groups for these measures. There were no differences between hibernating (HIB) and nonhibernating (NON-HIB) hamsters across or within the diet groups for any of the BAT measures [uncoupling protein content, mitochondrial mass, lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, and in vivo lipogenesis], nor were there significant effects of the diet on these measures. CHOW-and OIL-fed HIB hamsters showed decreases in body weight. All HIB groups had decreases in each carcass component, several fat pad weights, testes weight, and food intake. No consistent differences in WAT LPL activity or in vivo lipogenesis were found between HIB and NON-HIB hamsters. 1. A comparative study of fatty acid (FA) profiles in particulate matter (seston) and the key grazer Daphnia was performed in six high Arctic ponds (79°N, Svalbard). The ponds were all small and shallow, but followed a strong gradient with respect to nutrient content and optical properties. 2. A distinct locality‐specific pattern was detected by principal component analysis of FA profiles, where samples from each locality clustered both with regard to seston and Daphnia. Linear discriminant analysis using nine sestonic fatty acids as discriminant functions gave on average a correct prediction of the Daphnia lake membership in 47% of cases, with very high predictability in some lakes but poor predictability in others. 3. No significant correlation was detected between FA and nutrient concentration or levels of dissolved organic carbon. The major determinant of FA profiles as judged from a redundancy analysis was the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton communities, notably the biomass of Chlorophyceae. 4. The FA profiles of Daphnia were for some FAs strongly enriched relative to the seston, while diluted for others. Among the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), a pronounced magnification of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5 n‐3), and to some extent 18 : 3 n‐3 and 20 : 4 n‐6 was found, while docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22 : 6 n‐3) contributed in general less to FAs in Daphnia than in seston and was hardly detectable in Daphnia from most localities. 5. The overall content of PUFAs in Daphnia was consistently high, close to 40% of total FA in all investigated localities, despite major differences in seston PUFA content. Daphnia thus acts as a regulator with regard to overall PUFAs, reflecting its physiological constraints and relatively fixed demands for PUFAs in general. The distinct locality‐specific profiles in Daphnia strongly suggest a kind of FA‐fingerprint, but our data do not allow strict statements on the use of specific FAs as trophic markers.  相似文献

Objective: In this study, we tested the hypothesis that insufficiency of leptin restraint in the hypothalamus is responsible for promoting weight gain and adiposity after ovariectomy (ovx). Whether increasing leptin transgene expression can overcome the diminution in leptin restraint was evaluated in ovx rats. Research Methods and Procedures: Enhanced leptin or green fluorescent protein (GFP; control) transgene expression was induced by a single intracerebroventricular injection of recombinant adeno‐associated viral vector encoding either leptin gene (rAAV‐lep) or GFP gene (rAAV‐GFP; control) in acutely and chronically ovx rats. Body weight and food intake responses were monitored weekly. White adipose tissue (WAT) mass and serum levels of WAT‐derived hormones, leptin, and adiponectin were analyzed at termination of the experiments. Results and Discussion: An increase in leptin transgene expression in the hypothalamus initiated soon after ovx blocked hyperphagia and body weight gain and markedly suppressed WAT mass and adipokines, leptin, and adiponectin. Similar suppression of weight gain and adiposity and serum leptin and adiponectin levels after intracerebroventricular rAAV‐lep injection in chronically ovx rats were observed concomitant with unchanged daily food intake. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that in the absence of ovarian steroids, the existent insufficiency of leptin restraint at the hypothalamic level can be overcome with ectopic leptin expression, thereby reinstating central control on weight and adiposity.  相似文献

White-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys leucurus) are spontaneous hibernators that enter torpor each fall, whereas black-tailed prairie dogs (C. ludovicianus) hibernate facultatively only when food- or water-stressed during the winter. The body masses of both species greatly increase during the fall feeding period, with most of this gain in the form of depot fat. Body fat is utilized during winter fasting and/or hibernation. We measured the activities of fatty acid synthase (FAS), ATP-citrate lyase (ACL), malic enzyme (ME), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) in the tissues of both C.leucurus (hibernating and euthermic) and C. ludovicianus (euthermic only) under controlled conditions. The activities of FAS, ACL, and G6PDH in the liver all decreased during hibernation. The activities of ME and G6PDH in white adipose tissue (WAT) were also reduced during hibernation. Euthermic C. leucurus and euthermic C. ludovicianus differed only in brown adipose (BAT) ACL and WAT G6PDH activities. No significant differences in HSL activities were found between these two species or between euthermic and hibernating animals. These results suggest that this seasonal body fat cycle is due, at least in part, to seasonal variations in the activities of FAS, ME, ACL, and G6PDH that affect the rate of fatty acid synthesis. This study also demonstrates that spontaneous hibernators do not have a greater capacity to synthesize fatty acids during the fall than facultative hibernators, as previously suggested.  相似文献

育肥完成后到冬眠前的阶段被认为是贮脂类冬眠动物从体温常态到冬眠之间的过渡阶段。为研究此阶段瘦素对能量平衡和体温调节的作用,将完成育肥的达乌尔黄鼠随机分成3组,分别在侧脑室植入微渗透泵,持续灌注瘦素(0.5μg/day)、瘦素拮抗剂(0.5μg/day瘦素+5μg/day瘦素拮抗剂)以及人工脑脊液(对照组),为期4周。为了检测瘦素对动物入眠的影响,我们在药物处理最后一周将动物移入低温(5 oC±1oC)、恒黑条件下诱导蛰眠。药物处理过程中测定动物体重、能量摄入、代谢率和体温,药物处理结束后测定身体脂肪重量、褐色脂肪组织中解偶联蛋白1(UCP1)含量以及血清中与能量平衡相关的激素水平。结果发现:育肥后达乌尔黄鼠能量摄入、体重和每日体温自发降低。低温条件下,对照组中50%个体自发进入冬眠状态。瘦素处理和瘦素拮抗剂处理对能量摄入和体重变化没有显著影响。瘦素处理对入眠率没有影响,瘦素拮抗剂处理减少蛰眠表达。瘦素拮抗剂组血清中T4水平高于瘦素处理组。育肥后期瘦素以及瘦素拮抗剂处理对脂肪重量、代谢率以及UCP1含量没有显著影响。结果表明,瘦素对育肥结束后达乌尔黄鼠的冬眠表达具有一定调节作用。  相似文献

Behavioral comparisons between endangered species and their congeners may provide valuable data with which to test ideas about declining populations or the future direction of recovery efforts. We considered the case of the highly endangered Vancouver Island marmot ( Marmota vancouverensis ). Predation is a current source of mortality, and inadequate anti-predator behavior could have profound ramifications for the future success of re-introductions. We tested whether M. vancouverensis anti-predator behavior was unusual or 'deficient' by quantifying it and comparing it to 13 other marmot species. We found no evidence that Vancouver Island marmots were unwary. If anything, the converse was true. Vancouver Island marmots were responsive and vigilant towards real and simulated predatory threats. They dug numerous escape burrows that reduced the likelihood of predation. Our results have several implications for future recovery efforts, one of which was to establish 'baseline' flight-response targets that captive-bred Vancouver Island marmots will have to meet or exceed prior to release into predator-rich environments.  相似文献
