Midwinter waterfowl survey data indicates a long-term decline in the number of wintering American black ducks (Anas rubripes), potentially due to habitat limitations. In order for future estimates of carrying capacity to be determined, it is critical that regional food availability is estimated. We collected pairs of habitat core samples (n = 510) from 5 habitat types in southern New Jersey, USA, during October, January, and April 2006–2008 to estimate resource availability and variability. We collected upper gastrointestinal tracts from hunter-killed birds (n = 45) and late season collections (n = 19) to identify food items and limited our estimates of resource availability to only winter food items; thereby reducing the availability of seed foods found in our core samples by 38% and animal foods by 96%. We did not detect differences in years or sampling period, but did between habitat types. Mudflat habitat had the greatest availability of invertebrate and vertebrate food items and appeared to supply the bulk of energy to black ducks wintering in southern New Jersey. We suggest conservation efforts to be focused on restoring or enhancing mudflat habitat as an integral component of an ecologically functioning salt marsh to increase food availability. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Occupancy patterns can assist with the determination of habitat limitation during breeding or wintering periods and can help guide population and habitat management efforts. American black ducks (Anas rubripes; black ducks) are thought to be limited by habitat and food availability during the winter, but breeding sites may also limit the size or growth potential of the population. The Canadian Wildlife Service conducts an annual breeding waterfowl survey that we used to explore the hypothesis that black duck carrying capacity is limited by wetlands available for breeding in Québec, Canada. We applied single-visit, multi-species occupancy models to the 1990–2015 population survey data to determine if there was evidence the black duck population was limited by breeding habitat. Using a dynamic (multi-season) occupancy modeling approach, we estimated latent occupancy (occupancy accounting for imperfect detection) of black ducks and then used latent occupancy estimates to derive occupancy, colonization, and extirpation rates. We jointly modeled the occupancy dynamics of black ducks and other duck species in wetlands where both species were present. Throughout the duration of the survey, 44% of wetlands were never observed to be occupied by black ducks. Occupancy models showed wetland size was positively associated with occupancy at the first time step (initial occupancy) and colonization. All 2-species models indicated initial black duck occupancy, persistence (continued occupancy), and colonization were positively associated with the presence of a second species. Colonization rate over the 26-year period ranged from 7% to 27% across all models. Extirpation rates were similar and were constant through time within each model. Low occupancy rates, combined with approximately equal colonization and extirpation rates, suggest there are available wetlands for breeding black ducks in their core breeding area. If breeding habitats are not saturated, this suggests migration or wintering areas may be more limiting to black duck population abundance. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Abstract: We developed models for simultaneous inference on movement and harvest rates, and of factors influencing harvest rates, using band-recovery data and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) modeling. We modeled variation in harvest rates for American black ducks (Anas rubripes) during 1971–1994 using recoveries of ducks banded in 3 breeding regions and recovered in 6 harvest regions in Canada and the United States. Models based on season length or bag limit together with season length, and incorporating a random year- and area-specific effect, were superior to other models as gauged by information criteria, fit statistics, and cross-validation. We used these models to generate posterior predictive distributions for harvest rates as a function of harvest regulations, for application to adaptive harvest management.  相似文献

Determining the source areas of harvested individuals is important for effective conservation and management of migratory game birds. Banding has provided much information about source areas, but obtaining samples of marked individuals representative of all potential breeding areas is difficult for most species. To add to previous knowledge of harvest derivation based on banding data and to assist with regulatory decisions, we used stable hydrogen isotope (δ2H) techniques to estimate natal and molt source areas of Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors) harvested in southern Canada in 2014 and 2017. We found that most birds harvested in southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, northern Ontario, and southern Ontario likely originated in the prairie and boreal plains regions of Canada and the United States, which is the core production area for the species. Based on feather δ2H values, some birds harvested in Ontario may have also originated in Ontario. Our results differ from those of a long-term analysis of band recovery data that revealed that most Blue-winged Teal harvested in Ontario originated in the eastern part of the province and areas along the lower Great Lakes and southwestern Quebec. We found that nearly all birds harvested in Ontario in our study likely originated from areas north and west of the province. Together, banding and stable isotopes likely provide the best information available on source areas of harvested birds for regulatory decision making.  相似文献

Waterfowl are monitored in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States with 2 surveys: a transect survey from fixed-wing aircraft and a plot survey conducted from helicopters. The surveys vary in extent, but overlap exists in a core area of 9 strata covering portions of all provinces from Ontario east to Newfoundland. We estimated population change for American black ducks (Anas rubripes) and mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) from these surveys using a log-linear hierarchical model that accommodates differences in sample design and visibility associated with these survey methods. Using a combined analysis of the surveys based on total indicated birds, we estimate the American black duck population to be 901,700 (95% CI: 715,200–1,274,000) in 2011, with 526,900 (95% CI: 357,500–852,300) mallards in the surveyed area. Precision of estimates varies widely by species and region, with transect surveys providing less precise results than plot surveys for black ducks in areas of overlap. The combined survey analysis for black ducks in the eastern survey region produced estimates with an average yearly coefficient of variation (CV) of 12.1% for the entire area and an average CV of 6.9% in the plot survey area. Mallards, which had a more limited distribution in the region, had an average yearly CV of 22.1% over the entire region, and an average CV of 27.7% in the plot survey area. Hierarchical models provide a rich framework for analyzing and combining results from complex survey designs, providing useful spatial and temporal information on population size and change in these economically important species. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Ignorance of the location or inaccessible locations of lifestages can impede the study and management of species. We used stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to identify the habitats and diets and to estimate the duration of a 'missing' lifestage: the early juvenile stage of the green turtle, Chelonia mydas. Stable isotopes in scute from young herbivorous green turtles in shallow-water habitats revealed that they spend 3-5 years as carnivores in oceanic habitats before making a rapid ontogenetic shift in diet and habitat. Stable isotopes in persistent and continuously growing tissues, such as some fish scales, bird bills and claws and mammal hair and claws, can be used to evaluate the ecology of inaccessible lifestages.  相似文献

The growing prevalence of metabolic diseases including fatty liver disease and Type 2 diabetes has increased the emphasis on understanding metabolism at the mechanistic level and how it is perturbed in disease. Metabolomics is a continually expanding field that seeks to measure metabolites in biological systems during a physiological stimulus or a genetic alteration. Typically, metabolomics studies provide total pool sizes of metabolites rather than dynamic flux measurements. More recently there has been a resurgence in approaches that use stable isotopes (e.g. 2H and 13C) for the unambiguous tracking of individual atoms through compartmentalised metabolic networks in humans to determine underlying mechanisms. This is known as metabolic flux analysis and enables the capture of a dynamic picture of the metabolome and its interactions with the genome and proteome. In this review, we describe current approaches using stable isotope labelling in the field of metabolomics and provide examples of studies that led to an improved understanding of glucose, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism in humans, particularly in relation to metabolic disease. Examples include the use of stable isotopes of glucose to study tumour bioenergetics as well as brain metabolism during traumatic brain injury. Lipid tracers have also been used to measure non-esterified fatty acid production whilst amino acid tracers have been used to study the rate of protein digestion on whole body postprandial protein metabolism. In addition, we illustrate the use of stable isotopes for measuring flux in human physiology by providing examples of breath tests to measure insulin resistance and gastric emptying rates.  相似文献

Bioenergy could help limit global warming to 2°C above pre-industrial levels while supplying almost a fourth of the world's renewable energy needs by 2050. However, the deployment of bioenergy raises concerns that adoption at meaningful scales may lead to unintended negative environmental consequences. Meanwhile, the full consolidation of a bioenergy industry is currently challenged by a sufficient, resilient, and resource-efficient biomass supply and an effective conversion process. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of how stable isotope approaches have accelerated the development of a robust bioeconomy by advancing knowledge about environmental sustainability, feedstock development, and biological conversion. We show that advances in stable isotope research have generated crucial information to (1) gain mechanistic insight into the potential of bioenergy crops to mitigate climate change as well as their impact on water and nutrient cycling; (2) develop high-yielding, resilient feedstocks that produce high-value bioproducts in planta; and (3) engineer microbes to enhance feedstock conversion to bioenergy products. Further, we highlight knowledge gaps that could benefit from future research facilitated by stable isotope approaches. We conclude that advances in mechanistic knowledge and innovations within the field of stable isotopes in cross-disciplinary research actions will greatly contribute to breaking down the barriers to establishing a robust bioeconomy.  相似文献

American black ducks (Anas rubripes) and mallards (A. platyrhynchos) are morphologically and behaviorally similar species that were primarily allopatric prior to European colonization of North America. Subsequent sympatry has resulted in hybridization, and recent molecular analyses of mallards and black ducks failed to identify two distinct taxa, either due to horizontal gene flow, homoplasy, or shared ancestry. We analyzed microsatellite markers in modern and museum specimens to determine if the inter-relatedness of mallards and black ducks was an ancestral or recent character. Gst, a measure of genetic differentiation, decreased from 0.146 for mallards and black ducks living before 1940, to 0.008 for birds taken in 1998. This is a significant reduction in genetic differentiation, and represents a breakdown in species integrity most likely due to hybridization. Using modern specimens, we observed that despite a lower incidence of sympatry, northern black ducks are now no more distinct from mallards than their southern conspecifics.  相似文献

Studies in dendroisotope chemistry suggested that latewood cellulose contains better climatic records than whole-ring cellulose. However, this approach has never been tested on northeastern Canadian spruce trees. This study compares dendroisotopic series of cellulose from late and whole ring, and analyses their statistical relationships with hydro-climatic variables with the aim of selecting the best suited protocol for future hydro-climatic reconstruction in the downstream sector of Churchill River basin of Labrador, Canada. To this end, δ13C and δ18O series from latewood (LW) and whole ring (WR) α-cellulose of black spruce trees (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) were produced for the 1940–2010 period. The results show strong correlations between LW and WR isotopic series suggesting that there are no important variation in the isotopic ratios during the growing year and that black spruce trees use photosynthates of the current growing season to form their earlywood. Moreover, LW and WR δ13C and δ18O show similar relationships with both maximum temperature (Tmax) and Churchill River discharge. Correlations are higher when combining δ13C and δ18O for LW and WR. Overall, those correlations support the indirect relationship between tree-ring isotopic series and river discharge, as they are integrators of several climatic variables and derived parameters (Tmax, relative humidity, evapotranspiration, etc.). The LW and WR isotopic series give similar statistical relationships with hydro-climatic variables, and the WR treatment is faster (separation easier compared to LW). Thus, for black spruce the use of combined isotopic series in WR can be favored over LW for hydro-climatic reconstruction in the study region.  相似文献

Serum and blood cell δ13C and δ15N signals from 26 suckling pups of the South American sea lion from northern Patagonia were used as proxies of the composition of their mothers' diet to test the hypothesis that the foraging habits of the mother influence pup growth. Samples of primary producers and the female potential prey were analyzed to establish baseline isotopic values and to determine energy density. Pups were weighed to determine specific growth rate. Individual variability in female diet was large, probably as a consequence of dissimilarities in the foraging performance that depends on the individual's age, body size, and/or foraging skills. Growth of a pup was influenced by its mother's diet, as pups of females mostly relying on pelagic offshore prey were found to grow faster than those of females basing their diet on benthic coastal prey.  相似文献

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) and American black bears (U. americanus) are sympatric in much of Yellowstone National Park. Three primary bear foods, cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki), whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) nuts, and elk (Cervus elaphus), have declined in recent years. Because park managers and the public are concerned about the impact created by reductions in these foods, we quantified bear diets to determine how bears living near Yellowstone Lake are adjusting. We estimated diets using: 1) stable isotope and mercury analyses of hair samples collected from captured bears and from hair collection sites established along cutthroat trout spawning streams and 2) visits to recent locations occupied by bears wearing Global Positioning System collars to identify signs of feeding behavior and to collect scats for macroscopic identification of residues. Approximately 45 ± 22% ( ± SD) of the assimilated nitrogen consumed by male grizzly bears, 38 ± 20% by female grizzly bears, and 23 ± 7% by male and female black bears came from animal matter. These assimilated dietary proportions for female grizzly bears were the same as 10 years earlier in the Lake area and 30 years earlier in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. However, the proportion of meat in the assimilated diet of male grizzly bears decreased over both time frames. The estimated biomass of cutthroat trout consumed by grizzly bears and black bears declined 70% and 95%, respectively, in the decade between 1997–2000 and 2007–2009. Grizzly bears killed an elk calf every 4.3 ± 2.7 days and black bears every 8.0 ± 4.0 days during June. Elk accounted for 84% of all ungulates consumed by both bear species. Whitebark pine nuts continue to be a primary food source for both grizzly bears and black bears when abundant, but are replaced by false-truffles (Rhizopogon spp.) in the diets of female grizzly bears and black bears when nut crops are minimal. Thus, both grizzly bears and black bears continue to adjust to changing resources, with larger grizzly bears continuing to occupy a more carnivorous niche than the smaller, more herbivorous black bear. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Few studies have been published on the feeding ecology of Japanese soil fauna based on stable isotope analysis. Therefore, the present work aims to use this technique for studying the trophic structure of Japanese soil fauna at two coniferous forests. Significant differences were observed between investigated sites (Arahama and Gamo) in genus richness and abundance, while for Shannon diversity indexes the difference was non-significant. The isotopic signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the invertebrates collected at Arahama ranged from 0.3 to 6.3‰ for δ15N and from −27.3 to −23.3‰ for δ13C. At Gamo, invertebrates δ13C values ranged from −26.1 to −23.5‰ and δ15N values ranged from 1.6 to 6.8‰. At both sites, invertebrates formed two distinct groups on the basis of combined C and N stable isotope ratios. The locations of these groups related to δ13C values. The less enriched group (δ13C < −25‰) and the more enriched one (δ13C > −25‰). The range of δ15N for the present animals exceeded two trophic levels. While, the gradual 15N enrichment within the invertebrates species may indicate the dominance of omnivory in soil food webs. The differences between sites in δ15N confirm the importance of studying the trophic structure of soil fauna locally.  相似文献
