Based on length frequency data, the following growth and mortality parameters were derived for the stock of Indian oil sardine, Sardinella longiceps, off the southwest coast of India: L= 21 cm, K = 1.4 year-1, Z = 4.2 year-1, M = 2.0 year-1, F = 2.2 year-1 The fishing mortality (F) required to maintain the spawning stock at the optimum level was estimated to be 1.8 year-1. At this level of fishing mortality, the maximum sustainable yield per annum was estimated around 45 × 109 in numbers and 300,000 tonnes in weight.  相似文献

The Gulf of Aden, although subject to seasonally reversing monsoonal winds, has been previously reported as an oligotrophic basin during summer, with elevated chlorophyll concentrations only occurring during winter due to convective mixing. However, the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color data reveal that the Gulf of Aden also exhibits a prominent summer chlorophyll bloom and sustains elevated chlorophyll concentrations throughout the fall, and is a biophysical province distinct from the adjacent Arabian Sea. Climatological hydrographic data suggest that the thermocline, hence the nutricline, in the entire gulf is markedly shoaled by the southwest monsoon during summer and fall. Under this condition, cyclonic eddies in the gulf can effectively pump deep nutrients to the surface layer and lead to the chlorophyll bloom in late summer, and, after the transition to the northeast monsoon in fall, coastal upwelling driven by the northeasterly winds produces a pronounced increase in surface chlorophyll concentrations along the Somali coast.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to analyse the prevalence of skin tumours in Sardinella longiceps, and to investigate the tumour type occurrence, distribution and histology. Fish samples were collected from three different landing centres (Cuddalore, Parangipettai and Nagapattinam) of Tamilnadu, southeast coast of India, from January 2014 to December 2014. A total of 192 661 individuals were examined, 750 of which had tumours for an overall prevalence of 0.39%. By station, higher prevalence was observed in Parangipettai (0.41%) followed by Cuddalore (0.39%) and Nagapattinam (0.36%). Chromatophoromas were predominant among the types of tumours in sardines. The multi‐coloured cutaneous tumour masses were in the head and body skin. Among the chromatphoromas, the erythrophoromas were most abundant followed by melanophoromas, iridophoromas and leucophoromas. Histologically, the tumour lesions were characterized by hyperplastic pigment cells intermingled with fibroblasts. The gross‐morphological and histopathological diagnoses of these lesions were compatible with erythrophoroma, melanophoroma, iridophoroma and leucophoroma.  相似文献

The Arabian Sea is a heterogeneous region with high coral cover and warm stable conditions at the western end (Djibouti), in contrast to sparse coral cover, cooler temperatures, and upwelling at the eastern end (southern Oman). We tested for barriers to dispersal across this region (including the Gulf of Aden and Gulf of Oman), using mitochondrial DNA surveys of 11 reef fishes. Study species included seven taxa from six families with broad distributions across the Indo-Pacific and four species restricted to the Arabian Sea (and adjacent areas). Nine species showed no significant genetic partitions, indicating connectivity among contrasting environments spread across 2000 km. One butterflyfish (Chaetodon melannotus) and a snapper (Lutjanus kasmira) showed phylogenetic divergences of d = 0.008 and 0.048, respectively, possibly indicating cryptic species within these broadly distributed taxa. These genetic partitions at the western periphery of the Indo-Pacific reflect similar partitions recently discovered at the eastern periphery of the Indo-Pacific (the Hawaiian and the Marquesan Archipelagos), indicating that these disjunctive habitats at the ends of the range may serve as evolutionary incubators for coral reef organisms.

Formalin preservation, freezing, and salted and non‐salted smoking are often used to preserve fishes. Body proportions of fish show changes upon preservation when applying different preserving techniques; most authors report a decrease in length and some authors report changes in weight and condition factor (k). Four groups of round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) were subjected to the above treatments. Initial fork length (cm) and weight (g) ranged from 8.7 to 10.8 cm and 6.74 to 11.4 g, respectively. All fish decreased in both length and weight, with highly significant (P < 0.05) differences. Condition factor decreased in all treatments except formalin. Percentage reductions in length, weight, and condition factor were 11.0, 68.0 and 54.8% with salted smoking; 13.0, 69.3 and 53.3% with non‐salted smoking; 3.0, 14.1 and 6.7% with freezing; and 7.1, 13.3 and 108.1% with formalin preservation, respectively. Shrinkage was the least with freezing, followed by formalin, salted smoking, and non‐salted smoking preservation.  相似文献

The influence of Streptococcus phocae PI80 on the shelf life of Sardinella longiceps and Penaeus monodon was investigated by measurement of microbial and chemical analysis after appraising the safety of the protective probiotic culture in wistar rat’s model. The results of this safety assessment indicate that oral administration of protective culture does not demonstrate any toxicological effects. Consumption of this LAB strain had no adverse effects on animal’s general health status, hematology, blood biochemistry, histology parameters, or on the incidence of bacterial translocation. The effect of Streptococcus phocae is very evident with the reduction of Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio parahemolyticus, and coliforms. During storage, a marked decline in total volatile base and peroxide value was observed in protective culture-treated samples than the control. This strain looks promising as a protective culture for the preservation of fish products.  相似文献

To gain insight into whale shark (Rhincodon typus) movement patterns in the Western Indian Ocean, we deployed eight pop‐up satellite tags at an aggregation site in the Arta Bay region of the Gulf of Tadjoura, Djibouti in the winter months of 2012, 2016, and 2017. Tags revealed movements ranging from local‐scale around the Djibouti aggregation site, regional movements along the coastline of Somaliland, movements north into the Red Sea, and a large‐scale (>1,000 km) movement to the east coast of Somalia, outside of the Gulf of Aden. Vertical movement data revealed high occupation of the top ten meters of the water column, diel vertical movement patterns, and deep diving behavior. Long‐distance movements recorded both here and in previous studies suggest that connectivity between the whale sharks tagged at the Djibouti aggregation and other documented aggregations in the region are likely within annual timeframes. In addition, wide‐ranging movements through multiple nations, as well as the high use of surface waters recorded, likely exposes whale sharks in this region to several anthropogenic threats, including targeted and bycatch fisheries and ship‐strikes. Area‐based management approaches focusing on seasonal hotspots offer a way forward in the conservation of whale sharks in the Western Indian Ocean.  相似文献

A new myctophid species, Diaphus pallidus sp.n., was captured in the Gulf of Aden. The species can be distinguished from most of its congeners by the high number of dorsal fin rays and low number of gill rakers. It can be distinguished from D. lucidus (Goode & Bean) by the form of the operculum and by the situation of some of the body photophores.  相似文献
