A variety of characteristics were studied in populations of the onion root maggot, Hylemya antiqua, to determine the extent to which the age of the female producing a batch of eggs might affect heterogeneity in her offspring. Early-born offspring were found to be reproductively most successful. They had the longest mean expectation of life, a relatively low mortality rate into mid-life, the highest average fecundity, the highest mean rate of egg production, and they produced the highest percentage of female offspring. On the other hand, mid-born offspring were hardiest. They also had a long mean expectation of life, comparable to that for early-born offspring but, in addition, they had the lowest sustained mortality rate and the greatest ability to survive food stress. Their robustness may have been acquired at the expense of certain reproductive capabilities however, in that their average fecundity was lower than their early-born siblings', and their rate of egg production was more variable. Late-born offspring were the most mortality-prone and the least fecund, but they had the shortest mean generation time. These differences must be evaluated in terms of their effects on the rate of natural increase and on population growth. Maternal age was found to influence pupal size, although the provenance groups differed significantly from each other and, in fact, showed opposite trends within their respective cohort groups. Size itself, and the ability of a species to alter the size at which it pupates, may be characteristics which have evolved to fit a specific set of environmental conditions. 相似文献

X and Y chromosomes of Hylemya antiqua occur in two forms each. XL and XS, and Y1 and Y2. The larger XL has an intercalary proximal segment which is absent in the more common smaller XS. The acrocentric Y chromosome (Y1), does not differ morphologically from XS. A smaller metacentric Y2 is apparently not homologous with Y1. Two types of males, XY1 and XXY2, coexist in at least one Dutch population. XY2 has been observed in one individual only. In larval ganglion cells an association has been observed between chromosome Y2 and a probably non-homologous, intercalary segment of autosome 4. A numerical somatic variation of Y2 can lead to gynandromorphs and sex ratios significantly different from 1∶1. XX cells can differentiate into functional spermatozoa in XX/XXY2 mosaic testes. This indicates the presence of a diffusable male determining substance, which can reverse the “genotypic” sex of a cell. The occurrence of some spermatozoa-containing “cysts” in ovaries of two gynanders suggests a more or less autonomous (independent of the gonadal environment) differentiation of XXY2 germ cells. XXXY2 males and XXX females do not show a serious reduction in fertility. Even XXXXY2 males do not exhibit any sign of intersexuality and spermatogenesis seems unaffected. All 62 scored M II cells of X-tetrasomic males contained 2 Xs. 相似文献

The numerical response of adult female T. pyri feeding on different levels of ERM larvae, and at a range of temperatures was examined. The duration of the pre-oviposition period decreased as larval consumption increased, and the rate of oviposition was linearly related to the rate of consumption of larvae. Mathematical models were used to describe these relationships in terms of temperature and consumption of ERM larvae. The results were discussed in relation to the nature of the T. pyri/ERM interaction in New Zealand apple orchards. 相似文献

Summary One strain (iC) ofC. chinensis and two strains (aQ and tQ) ofC. maculatus were used to study the temporal pattern in adult distribution in oviposition site. The density of iC in the oviposition site decreased faster than the density in the population cage, but the pattern was not affected by the presence of the other species. The density in ovipositon site of aQ and tQ controls was far lower than that of iC. The density changes in the controls of both strains were rather parallel to the pattern in the population cage. The density of aQ and tQ in the oviposition site in mixed cultures was affected by the presence of the other species. The density of aQ was less than half that in the controls. The pattern of density change was almost the same as in the controls. The density of tQ in the mixed cultures, although lowered initially by the presence of iC, increased after the density of iC decreased. Coupled with its longer female longevity, this characteristic of tQ behavior at the oviposition site apparently contributed to its winning the competition with iC. The adult distribution pattern observed in the present experiments provides an explanation for the peculiar two-fold increase in mean individual weight ofC. chinensis in mixed cultures compared with controls, whileC. maculatus adults were a little lighter in mixed cultures than the controls. Summary The frequencies of disjunction types in double-translocation heterozygous males (262Y626XY2) in Hylemya antiqua have been established in MII cells and eggs of testcrosses.Several disjunction types occurred but four predominated. A correlation was found between the frequencies of the disjunction types and the relative position of the centromeres. The frequency of numerical non-disjunction (NND) was 4%. Differences in frequency of NND between sex-linked and autosomal translocations of H. antiqua are discussed. A good correspondence between the frequencies of unbalanced karyotypes, and embryonic and larval mortality was found. The total genetic load which can be induced by the T14/T61 males is estimated to be 60–65%. Some duplication/deficiency karyotypes appeared to be viable in pupal and even adult stages. In 26262Y6262X males a regular coorientation between 2Y and X was observed, in spite of non-homologous centromeres and a complicated synapsis of 2Y. Application possibilities of the present material for genetic control of H. antiqua are discussed. 相似文献

The concept of developmental variance is discussed with reference to its use in models for insect populations. When included in a model, developmental variance is typically used to describe the variation of developmental periods among individuals. However, its presence in a model can also have indirect impact on survival and fertility schedules. This impact can lead to significant changes in population growth rates and generation times. These relationships between developmental variance and population growth in models are quantified and discussed. 相似文献

Sibling (cannibalism among siblings) and non-sibling cannibalism (cannibalism among non-siblings) were studied in a natural population of a lady beetle, Harmonia axyridisPallas . Of all the eggs laid (n=2269), 24.76% (n=562) were killed by sibling cannibalism and 36.10% (n=819) were killed by non-sibling cannibalism. Sibling cannibalism occurred constantly and intensively in most egg batches throughout the entire oviposition period. On the other hand, non-sibling cannibalism was more intense in the middle and late oviposition periods, and when the egg batches were close to an aphid colony. This may be due to the high density of H. axyridis larvae relative to aphid density in the middle and late oviposition periods and also the larvae searching intensively near an aphid colony. 相似文献

Young onion flies were placed in cages at four temperatures, 15°, 18°, 21° and 24°. Every 2 days the development of the egg chambers in the ovarioles, mating, egg production and mortality were scored. Influence of the temperature on the speed of egg-chamber development was very distinct. There was a high positive correlation between the development of the first and the second egg chamber. At 24° a significant difference in speed of egg-chamber development was found at two low levels of light intensity.

- Analysis of life tables of the oriental moth, Monema flavescens, obtained for 8 generations over 4 years, disclosed that the cocoon parasitoid, Praestochrysis shanghaiensis, acted as a density-disruptive factor.
- The density of the host cocoon remained stable (max./min.=3.2), whereas that of the host adult varied (max./min.=14.3) although both showed similar fluctation patterns.
- Stability of the host population was associated with the density-dependence in the ratio of first generation cocoons to overwintered generation moths, which was the key factor for the rate of change throughout the year. Chrysidid parasitism among the first generation cocoons ranged from 37.7 to 70.1%, and that among the second generation cocoons from 16.7 to 63.2%, each showing an inverse density-dependence and acting as the main determinant (key-factor) of the between-year variation in the density of the adult moths.
- The density-dependence of the rate of change from overwintered generation adults to first generation cocoons was so strong that the parasitism on the second generation hosts had not effect on the cocoon density of the first generation. On the other hand, the density-dependence of the rate of change from first generation adults to second generation cocoons was weak, and the parasitism on the first generation hosts became the key factor for the between-year variation of the second generation cocoons.
- It is suggested that the stability of the parasitoid-host system will be disrupted without three parasitism-restricting factors: asynchrony in the parasitoid attack on the second generation hosts, high mortality among parasitoid larvae of the second generation, and the high proportion of those first generation parasitoids that enter diapause. These factors are considered to be effective only in cooler parts of the distribution of the parasitoid.

Summary In Hylemya antiqua, a stock homozygous for an autosomal reciprocal translocation was isolated using egg-hatch reduction and karyotype analysis. Sibling translocation homozygous (TT) and heterozygous (T+) females were compared in respect to egg production and longevity. In one full-sib (5 TT and 8 T+ females) significantly higher values for both parameters for T+ than for TT females were scored, in four others (a total of 35 TT and 28 T+ females) no significant differences were found. Cage experiments were started with populations composed of equal numbers of wild type flies (++) and translocation homozygotes. The frequencies of the different karyotypes in three successive, non-overlapping generations, did not suggest substantial differences in fitness between ++ and TT flies. Possible causes of a surplus of T+ individuals found in these experiments are discussed together with the usefulness of the translocation for genetic control of H. antiqua. 相似文献

Three species of root vegetables and leaf vegetables were grown in mixed stands at various densities and mixing ratios in
tow experiments. The reciprocal equation of the crowding effect for two-species mixtures was utilized for the three-species
mixtures. Interactions between species in two- and three-species mixtures were compared using a density conversion factor
which converts the density of one species to the density of the other species on the basis of its effect on the growth of
the species. The mean plant weights in a three-species mixture could be estimated by putting the density conversion factors
obtained from two-species mixtures into the reciprocal equations for a three-species mixture. 相似文献

The effect of population density on reproduction as well as the oviposition modes of two sympatric dung beetle species, Aphodius haroldianus (a low fecundity/high parental effort species) and A. elegans (a high fecundity/low parental effort species) was studied at a pasture in central Japan from 1982 to 1986.
- The adult population density of A. haroldianus was high (>40 per dung pat). The density of A. elegans was low (<5 per dung pat). Oviposition of A. haroldianus was suppressed above the density of about 10 adults of conspecifics but not affected by the density of other species. The intra- and interspecific density effects on oviposition were not detected in A. elegans.
- The number of A. haroldianus adults per pat decreased with dung age, while that of A. elegans increased until sixth day after deposition and then decreased. The number of eggs laid per pat was not different between 1-day-and 3-day-old pats for A. haroldianus. However, more eggs of A. elegans were found in 3-day-old pats than in 1-day-old ones.
- In the both species, the amplitude of population fluctuations was not remarkable; the maximum/minimum ratio for five years being 2.3 for A. haroldianus and 2.9 for A. elegans. Different density dependent processes were suggested to function for the small fluctuation of population density between the two species, i.e. intraspecific density effect on oviposition for A. haroldianus and contest type competition for food among larvae of A. elegans.

Semiempirical and ab initio theoretical methods have been used to investigate molecular structures of the chalcogen-substituted carboxylic acid isomers RC(=O)XH (chalcogenol acid) and RC(=X)OH (chalcogenon acid). A recent experimental report suggests that the chalcogenon isomers, although less stable at room temperature, predominate at low temperature in polar solvents and that there is only a small barrier to isomerization between the isomers. Theoretical calculations have been used to locate minimum energy structures of chalcogen-substituted carboxylic acid isomers and to calculate energy differences between pairs of isomers. Carboxylic acids are well known to dimerize, especially in the gas phase and in non-polar solvents. We have, therefore, also calculated energies of dimerization of the chalcogen-substituted acids by optimizing the geometries of the symmetric dimers. We note that the PM3 level of theory is only qualitatively correct for sulfur- and selenium-containing species but fails even qualitatively for the tellurium-containing compounds. Ab initio results confirm the experimental observations and provide good estimates of both isomerization and dimerization energies. We conclude that for many functional groups with tautomers RC(=X)YH and RC(=Y)XH, the more acidic tautomer is the one with the acid proton on the smaller, more electronegative atom, although in many cases this may not be the more stable tautomer.Electronic Supplementary Material available. 相似文献
