We studied the role played by the phorid Megaselia halterata (Wood) and the sciarid Lycoriella auripila (Winnertz) in the phoretic dispersion of the myceliophagous mite Microdispus lambi (Acari: Pygmephoridae). Twenty‐four crops were monitored during 18 months in commercial mushroom farms in Castilla‐La Mancha (Spain). Adults of both species were collected weekly and the mites they carried were counted and identified. Both phorids (19.6%) and sciarids (4.4%) carried the mite M. lambi. The calculated load of each was 3.4 M. lambi mites per phorid and 1.9 per sciarid. The same percentage of male and female phorid was used as vector, but the load was slightly higher for females (1.86 mites per female compared with1.48 mites per male). A mean of 7.2% of the phorids examined in winter were vectors of M. lambi, while in spring and autumn of the first year the average was more than 22%. The mean load did not vary significantly between seasons. Inside the mushroom farms, less than 10% of a small initial population of phorids carried mites (less than two mites per phorid). As the cycle progressed, more than 35% of a larger population of emerging flies did so (average 3.5 mites per phorid vector). At the end of the growth cycle, the flies may fly off to colonise nearby farms, favouring the propagation of M. lambi from infested to uninfested crops. Megaselia halterata is the principal vector of M. lambi in the mushroom farms of Castilla‐La Mancha due to their high numbers, the high percentage carrying mites and the number of M. lambi they carry.  相似文献

Primary sources of Pseudomonas tolaasi Paine on a mushroom farm were the peat and limestone used in the casing process. The pathogen could not be detected in the farm soil, water supply, the mushroom spawn used, or in compost after spawning, but was isolated from the casing (peat/limestone mixture) layer of symptom-free mushroom beds and both the casing layer and compost of beds bearing diseased mushrooms. Secondary sources were numerous once the pathogen was present in mushroom beds. These included symptomless and diseased mushrooms, the fingers and shoes of people handling the crop, their baskets, knives and ladders. Ps. tolaasi could be isolated from dust in the air in infected houses and also from floors. Spores of infected mushrooms may transport the bacterium, as did sciarid flies and mites which are common pests of mushroom crops.  相似文献

The nematode Steinernema feltiae (Nematoda: Steinemematidae) was tested for its ability to control two main mushroom pests i.e. the sciarid Lycoriella auripila (Diptera: Sciaridae) and the phorid Megaselia halterata (Diptera: Phoridae) in growing-rooms filled with spawned compost. A clear difference between female and male sciarid control was observed. A nematode application 1 day after casing preceded by an application 1 day before casing on the compost caused an almost complete control (97%) of the F1-generation of female sciarids. The F2-generation of females was similarly controlled (95%) by an application 7 days after casing. A dosage of 1 × 106nematodes m-2was found to be equally effective as higher dosages. Diflubenzuron remained active throughout entire the cropping period with high sciarid mortality rates varying from 72% to 99%. Phorid control was variable and seemed to depend on the presence of sciarids. In one occasion the control rate of F2-generation phorid larvae was 75% and was possibly caused by the presence of new infective juvenile nematodes recycled in F2-generation sciarid larvae. Diflubenzuron did not significantly reduce phorid numbers.  相似文献

The longevity of male and female Megaselia haltherata, 75% of parasitised by the nematode Howardula husseyi, was studied for 16 days at 20- 21.5 OC. A statistical model fitted to the data indicated that parasitism reduced fly longevity significantly; predicted times to 50% mortality were about 6 days shorter for parasitised males, but only 2 days shorter for parasitised females. An investigation of the number of nematode larvae liberated by female flies at intervals throughout the experiment showed that many had been liberated in the first 4 days, and that the rate of release then gradually declined. A statistical model for nematode dissemination rate was used to estimate the mean number of nematodes released at 4-day intervals by surviving flies containing 1–5 adult H. husseyi. Mass release of laboratory-reared parasitised flies on mushroom farms has been suggested as a possible method of boosting the incidence of parasitism in farm fly populations. The results of the present study indicate that if such a measure were taken in spawn-running rooms then the best effect might be attained by releasing the flies in two batches with one release occurring in the middle of each week of the spawn-run.  相似文献

Three insect growth regulator insecticides and an entomopathogenic strain of Bacillus thuringiensis (GC327), products effective against the mushroom sciarid, Lycoriella auripila, were compared for their effect on mushroom cropping. Cyromazine and diflubenzuron were applied as a surface drench to mushroom compost before or after pasteurisation (at filling or spawning, respectively); admixed into casing material (at casing); or at a combination of these times. Hexaflumuron and GC327 were applied only at filling and casing, respectively. The presence of the target pest, L. auripila, had no effect on treatment trends, although it was accounted for in the analysis by use of a yield model. The trial was notable for the disparate effects that cyromazine and diflubenzuron casing treatments had on mushroom cropping. Cyromazine treatments that included application at casing resulted in increases in yield, compared to the untreated control whereas, with diflubenzuron, the opposite was true, with treatment at casing alone causing the greatest reduction overall (10%). GC327 applied at casing was also conspicuous for giving a 13% increase in yield. Treating the crop at casing with either cyromazine or GC327, therefore, resulted in a 15% or 24% increase in yield, respectively, compared to a similar treatment with diflubenzuron. Hexaflumuron applied at filling caused increases in yield compared to application of cyromazine at filling and cyromazine or diflubenzuron at spawning. There were also effects on crop timing. The addition of a cyromazine casing treatment normally caused the distinct flushes of mushrooms to be produced significantly earlier than the untreated control (up to 2.5 days), as did GC327. With diflubenzuron, the earlier flushes were only produced by those treatments that did not include a casing application. The combinations that included a casing treatment with diflubenzuron initially produced mushroom flushes earlier than the untreated control. They became either synchronous with the control or they were delayed. From the crop tolerance perspective, therefore, cyromazine and GC327 would be the sciarid control products of choice for a commercial mushroom grower.  相似文献

In the present paper an account is given of observations and experiments on the influence of the casing soil on the cropping of beds of the cultivated mushroom, Psalliota campestris. It is shown from the results of a survey of cropping at thirty-nine mushroom farms that when the compost and cultural conditions are suitable for cropping, the production of mushrooms may be largely determined by the soil used for casing. Casing soils are classified into four grades depending on the numbers of sporophores formed, their rate of growth and the type of mushroom produced. A laboratory method of assessing the cropping potentialities of soils is described, and examples are given of its use for investigating field factors affecting the selection of soils for casing and the nature of the soil factors affecting cropping. It is suggested that chemical substances or specific surfaces in soils may promote cropping, but that close contact with air is necessary for them to be effective. It is concluded that direct trial is the only reliable method of assessing the value of a material for casing and that considerable fundamental research is needed on casing soils.  相似文献

An overwintering population of the mushroom phorid fly Megaselia halterata parasitized by Howardula husseyi was studied in an attempt to explain the winter decline in incidence of parasitism that has been observed in flies from mushroom farms. Fly larvae from eggs hatching in November developed into pupae in December and flies emerged in May. No selective mortality of parasitized specimens of larvae, pupae, or flies was observed. Dead parasites were found in only 10% of parasitized flies. The incidence of parasitism in the emerging flies (50%) was five times that of their parental generation and although parasitism significantly delayed fly emergence the delay was only 2–3 days. There was no evidence of winter decline in parasitism; instead there was strong evidence that parasitism enhanced phorid survival through the winter.  相似文献

Between 2008 and 2011, outbreaks of cobweb were observed in commercial white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) crops in Castilla‐La Mancha (Spain). In the last 3 years, the presence of the disease has notably increased resulting in serious economic losses. Based on morphological and genetic analyses, the casual agent of cobweb was identified as Cladobotryum mycophilum. A. bisporus mushroom crops were surveyed over a 2‐year period to estimate the incidence of cobweb. The presence of the disease was detected in 32% of the mushroom crops observed, being of particular concern in autumn (44% of crops infected) and winter (37%). As regards the casing material, the percentage of crops affected by cobweb was 34% in crops using mineral casing and 29% in those cased with a peat‐based casing, with no statistical relationship between the casing and the presence of cobweb. Two cropping trials inoculated with C. mycophilum were set up to evaluate the pathogenicity of the causal agent of cobweb in three peat‐based casings (C1, C2 and C3). The effect of cobweb on mushroom productivity was evaluated by comparing mushroom production and the cobweb patches detected in the casing soil. The decrease in total yield of mushrooms attributed to cobweb reached 12.9% with C2, and the crop area colonised by cobweb reached a final percentage of 36% with C3.  相似文献

The potential of two species of insect-parasitic rhabditid nematodes (Steinernema feltiae, Heterorhabditis heliothidis) for biological control of mushroom flies was studied in pot trials. Three Diptera that commonly infest mushroom crops were used; the larvae of Megaselia halterata (Phoridae), Heteropeza pygmaea (Cecidomyiidae) and Lycoriella auripila (Sciaridae) were all susceptible to parasitism by both nematode species. Fewer adult phorids and sciarids emerged when compost was nematode-treated and, for L. auripila, the effects of nematode applications at spawning, casing or on both occasions were compared. Casing treatments were more effective than spawning treatments; little extra benefit was gained from applying the nematodes twice. Populations of paedogenetic larvae of H. pygmaea built up rapidly in untreated compost, but were reduced when S. feltiae was applied, and were eradicated by H. heliothidis. Because they can penetrate insect cuticle, as well as natural body openings, Heterorhabditis spp. may be more suitable than Steinernema spp. for the control of mushroom fly larvae.  相似文献

Migrations of aphid vectors of Barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDV) were monitored using a Rothamsted Insect Survey suction trap in Friuli-Venezia Giulia (north-eastern Italy). Catches from 1983 to 2002 were studied for trends, correlations of total catches of each year with those of previous years, correlations between the autumn and the spring + summer catches of the same year and between spring + summer catches of one year with catches of the previous autumn. Infectivity of autumn alates was studied using biological tests, and infectivity indexes were calculated for all vector species and for Rhopalosiphum padi alone. Colonisation of barley and proportion of infected plants were checked in a field close to the suction trap from 1992 to 2002 and related to trap catches. Catches were also correlated to acreage dedicated to cereal and fodder crops in the region. During the 20 years, 15 BYDV vector species were caught in the trap, but only five species were found consistently colonising barley plants during autumn. R. padi was the most numerous species in catches, while Sitobion avenae was the predominant colonising species in the barley field. Relatively to R. padi , S. avenae colonies were about six times more numerous than expected from catches. The yearly abundance of catches of most species did not change significantly during the 20 years, with a few exceptions, significantly correlated to changes in the acreage dedicated to cereal and fodder crops. There was a significant decrease of the autumn catches of both R. padi and the total of BYDV vectors.  相似文献

The efficacy of different species of entomopathogenic nematodes was tested against larvae of the mushroom phorid Megaselia halterata (Diptera: Phoridae) and the mushroom sciarid Lycoriella auripila (Diptera: Sciaridae). Sciarid larvae originating from infestations in casing soil during colonization by Agaricus bisporus were almost completely controlled by applications of Steinernema feltiae to the casing soil. When larvae originated from infestations in freshly spawned compost, they could be controlled by compost applications halfway through spawnrunning and by very early casing treatments. The control of phorids in compost was maximally 31% when nematodes were mixed within the infested compost at a concentration of 3 106 nematodes/m2. Only slightly higher reduction rates were obtained at higher concentrations. The control of phorids was more promising in the infested casing layer, in which S. carpocapsae was most successful. At concentrations of 6 and 15 106 nematodes/m2 this species obtained reduction rates of 65 and 73% respectively when it was applied 3 days after the end of the infestation period. The entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema feltiae (Biosys strain #27) and Heterorhabditis heliothidis were evaluated for the larval control of a mushroom-infesting sciarid, Lycoriella mali, and for the effects of these nematodes on mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) production. In a series of small-scale mushroom crops, infective-stage H. heliothidis and S. feltiae were applied to the mushroom casing surface in the irrigation water or incorporated into the casing material at densities ranging from 28 to 1120 and 11 to 1120 nematodes cm-2 of casing surface respectively. The mortality of L. mali larvae ranged from 52 to 100% for H. heliothidis and 38 to 100% for S. feltiae. Both nematode species reduced mycelial coverage on the casing surface at primordia initiation. Neither mushroom strain (off-white or white hybrid) or method of application (incorporation into or irrigation onto the casing surface) altered the effect on mycelial coverage. The nematodes's negative effect on mycelial growth confounded the benefit of fly control. At high nematode densities (up to 1120 nematodes cm-2), damage-free mushroom yields for the first week of harvest were less than those from the untreated control. However, at lower nematode densities, at or below 140 cm-2, the nematodes had less effect on mushroom growth, and consequently, damage-free mushroom yields for the first week of harvest were frequently greater than those from the untreated control. In the absence of flies, the first-week mushroom yield generally declined with increasing nematode densities for both white and off-white mushroom hybrids. After 4 weeks of harvest, accumulated mushroom yields had nearly recovered from the earlier decline.  相似文献

The control potential of a strain (ScP) of Steinernema feltiae genetically selected against the mushroom sciarid Lycoriella solani, was evaluated for the management of L. mali. Trials were conducted at two commercial mushroom farms with high and low levels of fly infestation. The efficacy of the ScP strain was compared with the SN strain of S. feltiae and the chitin synthesis inhibitor, diflubenzuron. At low densities of L. mali, the two strains did not differ in efficacy and caused 85–94% reduction in fly populations. At high fly densities with a mixed infestation of the phorid fly, Megaselia halterata, the ScP stain caused 56–83% reduction in L. mali populations whereas the SN strain caused 51–73% reduction. Two doses of the improved strain (0.5 times 106 and 1.0 times 106 infective juveniles per m2 cropping area) did not differ in efficacy from diflubenzuron which caused 80% reduction in L. mali populations. The lower dose (0.5 times 106) of the SN strain was less effective than diflubenzuron. The ScP strain had a major advantage over the SN strain in persistence in casing material. Nematodes had no significant effect on mushroom yields.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the location of oviposition by the phorid fly Megaselia halterata (Wood) (Diptera: Phoridae) in uncased and cased compost. Clearly, a majority of the gravid females choose oviposition sites directly after entering the top layer of the compost. In uncased compost, 60% of all adults emerged from the top of four compost layers of equal thickness. When the compost was covered by a casing layer which was still uncolonized by Agaricus bisporus, oviposition was further concentrated in the top compost layer. In this situation, 91% of all adults emerged from the top compost layer whereas only 1.5% emerged from the casing. When the casing layer was colonized by mushroom mycelium, 45% of all adults emerged from the casing layer and 53% emerged from the top compost layer. Further concentration in the top compost layer and the casing layer occurred as a result of upward migration of larvae. When compost was cased after oviposition, up to 43% of all adults emerged from the casing layer. We concluded that in the control of phorid infestations with insect pathogenic nematodes, applications in uncased compost can be restricted to the upper compost layer. When compost and casing are filled simultaneously, nematode applications in the casing layer only could be considered.  相似文献

The addition of one, ten and fifty Aphelenchoides composticola per ioo g compost at spawning reduced the total yield of sporophores by 26%, 30% and 42% respectively (P= 0·01), demonstrating a significant regression (P= 0·05) of yield on inoculum concentration. In pots inoculated at spawning with ten and fifty A. composticola per 100 g compost, cropping ceased after 12 weeks. The addition of twenty, 100 and 300 Ditylenchus myceliophagus at casing reduced the total yield of sporophores by 50%, 68% and 75 % respectively (P= 0·01). Cropping did not occur in pots inoculated at spawning, but continued for 9 weeks in pots inoculated at casing. The yield from pots inoculated at casing with either nematode was significantly greater (P= 0·05) than that from pots inoculated at spawning. When inoculated at spawning, peak populations of D. myceliophagus and A. composticola were reached 7 and 13 weeks, respectively, after spawning. Then the numbers present were unrelated to the number in the inocula.  相似文献

The stratification of haematophagous Diptera was assessed in two boreal forests in northern Sweden by placing traps baited with carbon dioxide at 1.5 m, 5.0 m and 10.0 m above the ground. More than 40 000 specimens were captured, including 617 biting midges (Ceratopogonidae), 4029 mosquitoes (Culicidae) and 36 092 black flies (Simuliidae). Catches at the various trap heights reflected the general vertical distribution of the preferred hosts, with mammalophilic flies predominating (68.6%) in catches at 1.5 m and ornithophilic flies (42.4%) in catches at 10.0 m; however, most flies that use host birds at ground level were caught in the lowest traps (e.g. 85.1% of Simulium annulus were collected at 1.5 m). Within-species variation in vertical patterns between forests suggests plasticity in responses to environmental factors such as vegetative structure.  相似文献

Significant linear relationships between the mean number of sciarid, Lycoriella auripila, larvae/125 g-sample of casing and yield, numbers of mushrooms and weight/mushroom were demonstrated at all stages of a mushroom crop. Negative relationships were obtained for yield throughout the cropping period. There was no injury threshold for this pest, although an economic threshold of one larva/sample was deduced. Loss in yield was mostly due to the destruction of mushroom primordia and presumed interruption of nutrient supply to the developing sporophores. Numbers of mushrooms were severely reduced in the first, second and third flushes, more so than yield, although a large increase in numbers was demonstrated in the fourth flush. The size of mushroom was inversely related to numbers, although the increases in size in the first three flushes were insufficient to compensate for the reduction in numbers. A reduction in size was evident in the fourth flush.  相似文献

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). A simple design based on minimal blue and black rectangular panels, for attraction and contrast, with a trap body consisting of an innovative configuration of netting, proved best. This 'Nzi' trap (Swahili for fly) caught as many or significantly more tsetse and biting flies than any conventional trap. The Nzi trap represents a major improvement for Stomoxyinae, including the cosmopolitan species S. calcitrans (Linnaeus), with up to eight times the catch for key African Stomoxys spp. relative to the best trap for this group (the Vavoua). Catches of many genera of Tabanidae, including species almost never caught in traps (Philoliche Wiedemann), are excellent, and are similar to those of larger traps designed for this purpose (the Canopy). Improvements in capturing biting flies were achieved without compromising efficiency for the savannah tsetse species G. pallidipes. Catches of fusca tsetse (G. longipennis and G. brevipalpis Newstead) were higher or were the same as catches in good traps for these species (NG2G, Siamese). Altogether, the objective of developing a simple, economical trap with harmonized efficiency was achieved.  相似文献

Three crops of Agaricus bisporus were grown on non-composted substrate (NCS), spent mushroom compost (SMC), a 50/50 mixture of NSC/SMC, or pasteurized Phase II compost. NCS consisted of oak sawdust (28% oven dry wt), millet (29%), rye (8%), peat (8%), ground alfalfa (4%), ground soybean (4%), wheat bran (9%) and CaCO3 (10%). Substrates were non-supplemented or supplemented with Target® (a commercial delayed release nutrient for mushroom culture) or soybean meal at spawning or casing, or with Micromax® (a mixture of nine micronutrients) at spawning. Mushroom yield (27.2 kg/m2) was greatest on a 50/50 mixture of NCS/SMC supplemented with 10% (dry wt) Target® at casing. The same substrate supplemented with Target® at spawning yielded 20.1 kg/m2. By comparison, mushroom yield on Phase II compost supplemented at casing or at spawning with Target® was 21.6 kg/m2 and 20.6 kg/m2, respectively. On NCS amended with 0.74% or 0.9% Micromax® at spawning, yields increased by 51.8% (12.9 kg/m2) and 71.8% (14.6 kg/m2), respectively, over non-amended NCS (8.5 kg/m2). Conversely, mushroom yields were not affected when Micromax® was added to a 50/50 mixture of NCS/SMC. Mushroom solids content was higher in mushrooms harvested from NCS amended with 0.74% Micromax® (9.6%) compared to non-amended NCS (8.3%).  相似文献

Abstract. Cattle-visiting Muscidae were sampled with a handnet from a blood-smeared Masonite panel as well as grazing heifers and dairy cows in south-central Sweden. All flies were examined in search of nematodes. Only Musca autumnalis was infected with nematodes (Parafilaria bovicola, Thelazia spp. and Hetero-tylenchus autumnalis). The only mixed infections found involved P.bovicola and Thelazia spp. Most M.autumnalis infected with P.bovicola and Thelazia spp. were found during the two first months of the grazing season, whereas the prevalence of specimens infected with H.autumnalis remained about the same throughout the sampling period. Musca autumnalis was caught in significantly smaller numbers from heifers (P< 0.05) than from panel and cows. The catches of nematode-infected M.autumnalis were similarly distributed. Catches of other cattle-visiting Muscidae did not differ significantly among the methods used. Handnet sampling off a panel is therefore considered to be a convenient and accurate method when investigating the abundance of cattle-visiting Muscidae and the prevalence of their nematode infections.  相似文献
