The predatory effects of a Dipteran insect, Chaoborus, on the competition between exotic cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi and two natives, D. catawba and D. pulex, were studied for a period of three years in a freshwater reservoir, Lake James, North Carolina (USA). D. lumholtzi was first encountered in September 1997 and it was present only between August and October when population densities of native species were low and that of Chaoborus sp. was high. The patterns observed in the population dynamics of the exotic D. lumholtzi and two natives, Chaoborus suggest that a predator mediated coexistence phenomenon might be taking place in Lake James. The strong positive correlation between Chaoborus and D. lumholtzi and the negative correlation between Chaoborus, D. catawba and D. pulex is supportive of this hypothesis.  相似文献

Percottus glehni is a new colonizer in the ichthyofauna of Lake Glubokoe. Recently, this species, established in the European part of the USSR nearly 30 years ago, has become common in the lakes and ponds located 3–5 km from Lake Glubokoe. In Lake Glubokoe it keeps mainly to water thyme (Elodea) in shallow water with individuals up to 7 cm in size being predominant. Apparently, these fishes are not abundant due to strong predation pressure from larger predators.  相似文献

Biomass development and vertical distribution of a Chlamydomonas population in a small humic forest lake was followed by daily sampling in May-June, 1984. Chlamydomonas dominated the phytoplankton spring bloom, forming 71% of the maximum phytoplankton biomass on 18 May. In early May the outflow rate was high and during the 24 hour period when the maximum rate of surface runoff was recorded (8–9 May), 43% of the Chlamydomonas biomass was flushed out of the lake, which delayed the onset of biomass increase. When surface runoff had slowed down Chlamydomonas biomass started increasing and during wax of the population most cells were < 10 µm in diameter. Population maximum lasted for one day (18 May) and there-after Chlamydomonas biomass decreased towards the end of the study. Diel vertical migrations of zooplankton were studied in a small, dystrophic Kruczy Staw Lake. Two rotifer species (Synchaeta pectinata Ehrenberg, Trichocerca simonei DeSmet) inhabiting the lake occurred near lake bottom (7–8 m depth) in the daytime. At night they were observed in surface waters (0–2 m). Both amplitude and speed of the rotifer migration were markedly higher than those of crustaceans. As invertebrate predators are scarce or altogether lacking in the lake, vertical stratification of rotifer and crustacean communities both seasonally and dielly may be caused by strong competition for very low food resources in the lake. This assumption is supported by the observed reverse changes in densities of zooplankton and their food (i.e. picoplankton) during a diel cycle.  相似文献

Historically, open shorelines of Lake Malaŵi were free from schistosome, Schistosoma haematobium, transmission, but this changed in the mid-1980s, possibly as a result of over-fishing reducing density of molluscivore fishes. Very little information is available on schistosome infections among people in lake-shore communities and therefore we decided to summarise data collected from 1998 to 2007. Detailed knowledge of the transmission patterns is essential to design a holistic approach to schistosomiasis control involving the public health, fisheries and tourism sectors. On Nankumba Peninsula, in the southern part of the lake, inhabitants of villages located along the shores of Lake Malaŵi have higher prevalence of S. haematobium infection than those living in inland villages. Overall prevalence (all age classes combined) of urinary schistosomiasis in 1998/1999 ranged from 10.2% to 26.4% in inland villages and from 21.0% to 72.7% in lakeshore villages; for school children prevalence of infection ranged from 15.3% to 57.1% in inland schools and from 56.2% to 94.0% in lakeshore schools. Inhabitants on the islands, Chizumulu and Likoma, also have lower prevalence of infection than those living in lakeshore villages on Nankumba Peninsula. This increased prevalence in lakeshore villages is not necessarily linked to transmission taking place in the lake itself, but could also be due to the presence of more numerous typical inland transmission sites (e.g., streams, ponds) being close to the lake. Temporal data witness of intense transmission in some lakeshore villages with 30–40% of children cleared from infection becoming reinfected 12 months later (also lakeshore village). The level of S. mansoni infection is low in the lakeshore communities. Findings are discussed in relation to fishing in the lake.  相似文献

In the framework of a planktological and ecological study in Lake Tanganyika, East Africa (CLIMLAKE, 2001–2005), variations of cell abundance and size were observed in a green alga, Eremosphaera tanganyikae, at two study sites, one in the north basin of the lake (off Kigoma, Tanzania) and the other in the south basin (off Mpulungu, Zambia). Whereas most green algae developed better in the rainy season and in the northern part of the lake, Eremosphaera developed better in the southern basin, in the dry season. It also exhibited large variations in cell abundance and cell size, with maxima in the middle of the dry season, which may be related to increased phosphorus availability. Moreover, increase in cell size (up to 80 μm in length), without notable change in S/V ratio, may provide the alga with resistance to grazing by copepods, which reach maximal abundance during the dry season.  相似文献

Shells of the freshwater gastropods Gyraulus trochiformis (Planorbidae or ramshorn snails) and Bania pseudoglobula (formerly Pseudamnicola, Hydrobiidae) from Miocene Steinheim Basin in SW Germany contain small holes with a mean diameter of 0.8 mm. Analyses of comparable holes are so far unknown from fossil or extant assemblages of freshwater shells. This analysis of the perforated shells suggests that the holes were not formed by post‐depositional or pure taphonomic processes. Instead, they were most likely produced by predators. This analysis widens the means for identification of predation on freshwater snail shells that can be used in other palaeolimnological studies. The co‐occurrence of fish teeth and perforated shells in the studied samples as well as the perforation features suggest that the predator was either barbel or tench fish. The correlation between shell sizes and hole diameters suggests a size relationship between predator and prey that may generally be related to gape‐limited fish predators. The co‐occurrence of perforated shells in these lake sediments with a dominance of large and armoured shells suggest that these larger shells with protuberances and knobs could not be crushed by the gape‐limited fish predators. This analysis is the basis for a hypothesis that the endemic evolution of Gyraulus in Lake Steinheim, with some varied forms of shell thickness and morphology, was triggered by a predator–prey relationship based on adaptations to avoid shell‐breaking predators.  相似文献

Microbial heterotrophic activity, dark CO2 assimilation, primary productivity and microbial ATP were measured monthly in the extremely eutrophic Lake Tuusulanjärvi during the winter of 1979–1980. Because of continuous water circulation caused by low temperature and artificial aeration of the lake, no winter stratification developed. Very low summertime 3H-glucose turnover times of 5 h increased to a level of 10–20 h from August to January. Winter maximum of 110 h was measured in March, and turnover times returned to 10–20 h in April, before the vernal bloom of algae occured. Oxygen saturation remained over 46% during the winter.High primary productivity was observed in November (400–500 mg C m–3 day–1), and measurable productivity was detected under ice in January (80 mg C m–3 day–1). Dark CO2 assimilation increased to 14% of primary productivity in March. No correlation was found between 3H-glucose turnover rate and dark CO2 assimilation. ATP correlated slightly better with primary productivity than with turnover rate. The single concentration method proved to be sensitive for winter heterotrophic activity measurement.  相似文献

164 taxa were identified in the net zooplankton of the pelagial of L. Peipsi-Pihkva in 1909–1987, including 3 species of protozoans, 74 species of rotifers, 58 species of cladocerans, 28 species of copepods and 1 mollusc. One rotifer species, Ploesoma peipsiense Mäemets et Kutikova, has been described as new for science here. The zooplankton of L. Peipsi-Pihkva is remarkably rich in species including rarities in Estonia: Limnosida frontosa, Drepanothrix dentata, Bythotrephes longimanus, B. cederstroemi etc. Due to its large surface area, L. Peipsi-Pihkva provides a large scale of biotopes of a diverse trophic state and humic content, which support species with different ecological requirements. Most of the aquatory of the lake has lately been mesotrophic, favouring the coexistence of indicators of oligo- and mesotrophic state and species preferring a higher trophic state. The occurrece of 10 species of the genus Bosmina including B. berolinensis, B. gibbera, B. lilljeborgi, B. thersites and B. crassicornis, sparse in Estonian lakes, is the most noteworthy feature of the zooplankton of L. Peipsi-Pihkva. The coexistence of B. coregoni and B. berolinensis, B. gibbera, B. lilljeborgi etc. which were earlier regarded as subspecies of B. c. coregoni proves that they are different species producing usually no hybrids. The species composition was subjected to certain changes during the years under consideration. Larvae of Dreissena were first found in zooplankton in 1962. The oligo-mesotrophic indicator Holopedium gibberum occurred in the lake in 1909–1964, but was lacking in later samples.  相似文献

<正> This study was conducted to provide a five-year database on the breeding seasonality and breeding biology of a CentralAmerican cichlid fish Neetroplus nematopus, a biparental substratum-spawning cichlid that cares for its eggs, wrigglers, andfry for up to six weeks. A total of 503 breeding pairs were monitored for breeding success. Breeding pairs of N. nematopus aresexually dimorphic in size, with females averaging 39% of male body mass. Fry emerged from 85% of nesting cavities. Afterthree weeks, only 30% of the broods were present in the nesting cavity; these broods had a 30% survival rate, giving a 9% overallsurvival rate. Nineteen percent of the successful parents with three-week-old broods adopted foreign fry. A consistent unimodalbreeding peak in December was observed for five years. This breeding peak differed dramatically from the bimodal breedingseason 20 years found in the 1970s. The effects of extensive grenade fishing practices during the 1980s might have played a substantialrole in the observed change. Grenade fishing stopped in 1991, and the number of A. nematopus pairs increased by 136%from 1990 to 1995. With increased density of breeding fish, the breeding season for this species also expanded. The balance betweendivergent selection due to competition for breeding sites and stabilizing selection due to predation pressure on offspring islikely to mold the breeding season for N. nematopus and other cichlids of Lake Xiloá. According to the results of seasonal monitoring, in 2007–2013 purple sulfur bacteria morphologically similar to Thiocapsa sp. Shira_1 (AJ633676 in EMBL/GenBank) predominated in the anoxygenic phototrophic community of the water column of the meromictic Lake Shira (Khakassia, Siberia). No pronounced seasonal periodicity in the total cell number in the water column was revealed during the period of observation. In some years cell number during the period when the lake was covered with ice was reliably higher than in summer. The absence of seasonal periodicity was probably due to the low amplitude of seasonal variations in temperature and illumination in the redox zone, resulting from its relatively deep location (12–16 m). The year-to-year dynamics was characterized by a reliable decrease of the total cell number in 2009–2010 and maxima in 2007 and 2011–2012. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that water temperature in the redox zone was the best predictor of the PSB abundance in Lake Shira. Water temperature, in turn, depended on the depth of mixing of the water column. Intense mixing in 2009–2011 was probably responsible for decreased PSB abundance in the lake. On the other hand, the absence of deep winter mixing, resulting in stable conditions in the chemocline, favored the preservation of relatively high PSB biomass. Prediction of circulation depth, which depends mainly on the weather conditions and dynamics of the water level, is required for prediction of PSB abundance in Lake Shira. These results may be useful for paleolimnological reconstructions of the history of the lake based on the remnants of purple sulfur bacteria in bottom sediments.  相似文献

Summary Determinations for sulphate, bromide content and the alkalinity of Lake Maryût water were carried out at six stations during the four seasons of 1966. The sulphate chlorinity ratio increases with the decrease of chlorinity. It has an average of 0.2649 which is higher than the ratio of 0.1395 for sea water and lower than the ratio for river waters. Regional variations in the SO4/Cl ratio are attributed to the effect of drainage water which have a high sulphate content. The average bromine chlorinity ratio 0.00360 is compared with 0.00348 for sea water. The seasonal and regional variation of the Br/Cl ratio is less significant than the SO4/Cl ratio. The specific alkalinity decreases with the increase of chlorinity. The average specific alkalinity for the lake water is 3.20 which is higher than that for sea water, (0.126), and lower than that for river waters.  相似文献

Background and Trophic Diversity Study

Lake Turkana is an understudied desert lake shared by Kenya and Ethiopia. This system is at the precipice of large-scale changes in ecological function due to climate change and economic development along its major inflowing river, the Omo River. To anticipate response by the fish community to these changes, we quantified trophic diversity for seven ecological disparate species (Alestes baremose, Hydrocynus forskalli, Labeo horie, Lates niloticus, Oreochromis niloticus, Synodontis schall, and Tilapia zillii) using stable isotopes. Based on their marked morphological differentiation, we postulated that dietary niches of these species would be similar in size but show little overlap. The degree of trophic diversity varied greatly among the species studied, refuting our hypothesis regarding dietary niche size. Oreochromis niloticus and L. niloticus had the highest trophic diversity and significantly larger dietary niches than T. zillii, A. baremose and H. forskalli. Low overlap among the dietary niches of the seven species, with the exception of the synodontid catfish S. schall, is consistent with our second hypothesis.

Predicting Species’ Vulnerability

Breeding vulnerability was highest among those species with the lowest trophic diversity. We predict that in suffering two strikes against them, A. baremose, H. forskalli, T. zillii, and L. horie will be most affected by the highly altered Lake Turkana ecosystem and that O. niloticus, L. niloticus and S. schall will be least affected. Low vulnerability among O. niloticus and L. niloticus is promising for the future of the lake’s fishery, but the third most important fishery species (L. horie) will be highly vulnerable to impending ecosystem change. T. zillii should be treated as separate from O. niloticus in the fishery given higher sensitivity and a different ecological role. We see potential for expansion of the fishery for S. schall but don’t recommend the development of a fishery for A. baremose and H. forskalli.  相似文献

In many haplochromine cichlid fish, male nuptial coloration is subject to female mate choice and plays a central role in the evolution of reproductive isolation between incipient species. Intraspecific variation in male coloration may serve as a target for diversifying sexual selection and provide a starting point for species divergence. Here, we investigated a polychromatism in Neochromis omnicaeruleus, a haplochromine from Lake Victoria, East-Africa. In this species, male coloration ranges from skyblue to yellow-red and females are grey-blue to yellow. We found that both genetic and environmental factors influence the expression of these colours during individual development. In a natural population, we found that male colour was associated with size and sexual maturity: yellow males were smaller than blue males and tended to be sexually immature. In females, size and maturity did not differ between colour types. Laboratory crosses revealed that there is a heritable component to the observed colour variation: yellow parents produced more yellow offspring than blue parents. Together with repeated aquarium observations of yellow individuals that gradually become blue, these data suggest that yellow males change to blue as they approach sexual maturity, and that the occurrence and timing of this transition is influenced by both environmental and genetic effects. The significance of this mechanism of colour expression as a possible target for divergent selection remains to be evaluated.  相似文献

Short-term changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass have occurred 1–3 times every summer for the past 5 years in the shallow and hypertrophic Lake Søbygård, Denmark. These changes markedly affected lake water characteristics as well as the sediment/water interaction. Thus during a collapse of the phytoplankton biomass in 1985, lasting for about 2 weeks, the lake water became almost anoxic, followed by rapid increase in nitrogen and phosphorus at rates of 100–400 mg N M–2 day–1 and 100–200 mg P m–1 day–1. Average external loading during this period was about 350 mg N m–2 day–1 and 5 mg P m–2 day–1, respectively.Due to high phytoplankton biomass and subsequently a high sedimentation and recycling of nutrients, gross release rates of phosphorus and nitrogen were several times higher than net release rates. The net summer sediment release of phosphorus was usually about 40 mg P m–2 day–1, corresponding to a 2–3 fold increase in the net phosphorus release during the collapse. The nitrogen and phosphorus increase during the collapse is considered to be due primarily to a decreased sedimentation because of low algal biomass. The nutrient interactions between sediment and lake water during phytoplankton collapse, therefore, were changed from being dominated by both a large input and a large sedimentation of nutrients to a dominance of only a large input. Nitrogen was derived from both the inlet and sediment, whereas phosphorus was preferentially derived from the sediment. Different temperature levels may be a main reason for the different release rates from year to year.  相似文献

Total coliform concentrations obtained from cruises of Lake Erie, conducted from the Canada Centre for Inland Waters between 1966 and 1970, have been analysed to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of total coliforms in the lake. Although year to year comparisons were made on a qualitative level due to the limitations in the data, some consistent seasonal features of the spatial distribution are evident. The location of zones of higher concentration have been attributed to proximity to large urban areas and lake currents. The contribution of fecal coliforms to the total coliform concentration has been examined with the conclusion that, at the low total coliform concentrations ( 30 per 100 ml) observed in much of the lake, there is no relationship between the two concentrations but, over a broader range, fecal coliforms increase with total coliform concentrations and, at very high total coliform concentrations (1000 per 100 ml), fecal coliforms are always present. The analysis demonstrates 1) the value of examining observed and fitted distributions to compare subsets of a large collection of data and 2) a clustering procedure which is generally applicable to data consisting of counts.  相似文献

The cichlids of Lake Malawi are one of the world’s most species rich and phenotypically diverse groups of extant vertebrates. The extraordinary variability of this group’s color patterns, reproductive behaviors, and trophic morphologies are well documented. More recently, an additional axis of phenotypic diversity has been identified. Lake Malawi cichlids have been shown to use species-specific acoustic communication in both aggressive and reproductive encounters. However, documentation of acoustic signals used by this group is limited to a small number of taxa observed within the confines of the laboratory. This study examines the acoustic signals produced by six species spanning four genera of rock-dwelling cichlids recorded in their natural habitat, the shallow waters surrounding Thumbi West Island, Lake Malawi. Four acoustic parameters were quantified and compared between species: trill duration, number of pulses per trill, pulse duration, and pulse period. Using these characteristics, sympatric species within the genus Maylandia were easily distinguished. Furthermore, a comparison of this data to previously published acoustic data reveals possible geographic dialects within species.  相似文献
