The accumulation of inorganic phosphate in lake sediments and a possible following release is due to the adsorption of phosphate onto Fe(OOH) and, especially in hard waters, to the precipitation of apatite. Attempts are made to quantify both processes.For the quantification of the P adsorbed, Pads, onto Fe(OOH) the Freundlich adsorption isotherm, Pads=A(o-P)B, gave good results. The constants A and B could be quantified. Constant A appeared to depend on the pH and the Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the water. Constant B appeared to approach 0.333. With this solubility product the solubility of o-P can be calculated as function of the Ca2+ concentration and the pH. The two equations, for adsorption and precipitation, are put together in a so-called solubility diagramme, which describes the o-P concentration as function of the Fe(OOH) concentration in the sediments, and the pH and the Ca2+ concentration in the overlying water.The release of phosphate from the Fe(OOH)P complex under anoxic conditions after adding H2S in inorganic suspensions was shown to be limited. Only when a large excess of H2S was added there was some release, but if less than 75% of the Fe(OOH) was converted into FeS, there was no release. The possibility of organic phosphate as the source of phosphate release under anoxic conditions is discussed. For a full understanding of this possibility, fractionation of sediment bound phosphate must be carried out in such a way, that these organic phosphates are not hydrolysed.This article is dedicated to the memory of Dr Kees de Groot, who died on 21 September 1994. In the coastal lagoons of Southern France, sand smelt Atherina boyeri, is known as a sedentary species. However part of the sand smelt population living in the brackish water Vaccarès lagoon in the Camargue annually migrates to fresh waters. The movements of sand smelts within the watersystem of the Camargue were studied from 1986 to 1990. Fish traps and fyke nets were set and catches were standardised to Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE). A Stepwise Multiple Correlation analysis was carried out to link fish abundance with various environmental factors. Between September and November, sand smelts living in the Vaccarès start to colonize fresh waters (drainage canals and then temporary marshes), until March. Spawning occurs from April to June, both in the shallow branches of the canal and in the marshes. From June onwards adults and young-of-the year leave the fresh waters and return to the Vaccarès lagoon where they remain until the next migration. This autumnal migration to freshwater habitats involves mainly fish less than 3 years old, the oldest individuals remaining all year in the Vaccarès. Water level and photoperiod contribute to 20.7% of the variation of CPUE within the drainage canal, while date, water temperature, and rainfall combined, only account for 2.5% of CPUE variations. Date and photoperiod contribute significantly to explaining the patterns of fish migrations between the canal and the marshes. The density of mature sand smelt in the marshes before spawning, varies between 4 and 4346 fish ha–1. Fry mortality (against number of eggs spawned) over the first two months of life was assessed to vary between 97.5% and 99.9%. Physiological factors such as osmoregulation linked to water temperature are possibly the ultimate factors explaining these unusual annual migrations of sand smelt in the Camargue.  相似文献

By means of sequential extractions with Ca-NTA and EDTA, a separation was performed between Fe(OOH) P and CaC03P in a few sediments; the remaining fraction, considered to be organic phosphate, was quantified as well. We found that with the commonly used method of extraction with NaOH and H2S04, less Fe(OOH) P and much more CaC03 P was found than with the chelating extractants. The organic phosphate pool in live and dead algal material and in some mud samples was partly hydrolysed and therefore recovered as inorganic phosphates with classical extractions. This article concerns seasonal variations in the phosphate concentrations in two coastal lagoons near Montpellier (Mediterranean coast, France). The o-P concentration in the overlying water is highest during summer. The role of the sediment, particularly that of the different P fractions in the sediment, is discussed. Significant variations, especially in the FeOOH ≈ P fraction, occur. For both Tot-Psed and the Fe00H≈P fraction a gradient from surface to bottom is observed, as well as a distinct decrease in the FeOOH≈P fraction in the surface sediments during summer and autumn. Variations in the FeOOH≈P fraction appear to be compensated by variations in the CaC03≈P fraction. These variations appear to be determined by the ferric hydroxide concentration. This compound represents only a small part (maximally 15%) of the total iron in the sediments and is related to the dissolved oxygen content of the immediately overlying water. Besides the fractions o-P, Fe(OOH)≈P, a large part of the CaC03≈P fraction is potentially bioavailable. A large proportion of the Tot-Psed is therefore bioavailable.[/p]  相似文献

Wetlands, especially in the Mediterranean area, are subject to severe eutrophication. This may upset the equilibrium between phytoplankton production in undesirable quantities and a quantitatively desirable macrophyte production. In order to manage this equilibrium, a quantitative knowledge of nutrient input and fluxes is essential and the role of sediments in these processes must be understood. This knowledge can be useful even for agriculture, e.g. rice cultivation, where optimal utilization of fertilizers can lead to an economic benefit.In this article different aspects of nutrient cycles are discussed in view of approaching a sufficiently precise quantification. The nutrient input balance of the Camargue was therefore measured which showed that the input of nutrients with the irrigation water, taken from the river Rhone, roughly equals the quantity of fertilizers added.Phytoplankton growth can be approached reasonably with the Monod model, although there are still many practical problems, such as the influence of the pH on P uptake and the problem of measuring P uptake in the field. The situation is worse for macrophyte growth; quantitative data are scarce and studies have often been carried out with unrealistic nutrient concentrations or without addressing the influence of the sediment. This influence can also include negative factors, such as high concentrations of Fe2+, H2S or FeS, but cannot yet be quantified.The nitrogen cycle in wetlands is dominated by denitrification. Most wetlands have sediments with high concentrations of organic matter, therefore with a large reducing capacity. Besides this process, we have shown that denitrification can also be controlled by FeS. In the Camargue sediments this denitrification is mediated by bacteria from the sulfur cycle; this appeared to be the major pathway. It was shown that a stoicheiometric relation exists between nitrate reduced and sulphate produced. The influence of the temperature was quantified and appeared to be stronger at high organic matter concentrations than at lower ones. Denitrification with FeS means that the bacteria use nitrate also for their N demands, while this is not necessarily the case during denitrification with organic matter.Mineralization of macrophytes is a much slower process than that of phytoplankton, probably because of their high C/N ratio. We could, however, not confirm the general assumption that the addition of nitrogen stimulates this mineralization. On the contrary, we found that two amino acids both with a C/N ratio of 6 had different mineralization rates. The amino acid composition of dead macrophytes and the C/N ratio may be of equal importance.Unlike nitrogen, phosphate is always strongly adsorbed onto sediments. The two mechanisms of the adsorption of inorganic phosphate onto sediments, i.e. the adsorption onto Fe(OOH) and the precipitation of apatite, have been quantified. The adsorption of phosphate onto Fe(OOH) can be satisfactory described with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm: Pads = A* (o-P)B. The adsorption coefficient A depends on the pH of the system and the Ca2+ concentration of the overlying water and can be quantified preliminarily by A = a.10(–0.416*pH).(2.86 – (1.86.e–Ca2+)). B can be approached by 0.333, which means the cube root of the phosphate concentration. The second mechanism is the solubility of apatite. We found a solubility product of 10–50 for hard waters. The two mechanisms are combined in solubility diagrams which describe equilibrium situations for specific lakes.The conversion of Fe(OOH) to FeS has a strong influence on phosphate adsorption, although the partial reduction of Fe(OOH) P by H2S does not release significant quantities of phosphate. Even after complete conversion to FeS only a small part of the bound phosphate was released.Besides the two inorganic phosphate compounds, we established the existence of two organic pools, one soluble after extraction with strong acid (ASOP), the other one with strong alkali. The first pool is probably humic bound phosphate, while the larger part of the second pool was phytate. The ASOP was remineralized during the desiccation of a Camargue marsh; this drying up oxidized FeS, thus improving the phosphate adsorption and decreasing the denitrification capacity. It can, therefore, be an important tool for management. An experimental approach of the phosphate exchange across the water–sediment interface in fish ponds of the Deroua farm (Béni-Mellal, Morocco) is needed to understand the phosphate dynamics in these ponds in relation to their water quality. During this study, we conducted experiments to determine the P-fractions of the different pond sediments and to estimate the release from these sediments of phosphate available for algal uptake. We also determined the amount of phosphate needed to saturate the sediments of two different fish ponds under anoxic and oxic conditions. Phosphate release from sediments comes mainly from Fe(OOH)P and is more important in ponds lined with sheets. The accumulation of organic matter in sediments favours the installation of anoxic conditions and enhances the phosphate release from CaCO3P, labile in these pond sediments. Under experimental conditions, org-P plays a minor role in the P-release. Oxic conditions, to the contrary, have an inhibitory effect on the P-release from sediments. About 80–98% of the P-adsorbed onto different pond sediments was recovered in the inorg-P-fractions. Aeration induces the oxidation of FeS to Fe(OOH) which can adsorb phosphate from solution. Besides, the presence of bacteria in pond sediments was essential to promote phosphate release under anoxic conditions by controlling the oxidation state of iron and the mineralization of the organic matter. Sheet-lined ponds, when insufficiently dried, accumulate a large quantity of organic matter in their sediments. After a decrease in pH, P is released from CaCO3P and enhances the phytoplankton productivity responsible for renewed accumulation of organic matter. Org-C concentrations in sediments over 20 mg g–1 d.w. favour the formation of toxic factors (Fe2+, Mn2+, NO2 and H2S) harmful for carp growth. Phosphate was fractionated in Guianese mangrove sediments. Fe(OOH)P was extracted using a Ca-EDTA + Na-dithionite solution buffered at pH 8. CaCO3P was extracted using Na2-EDTA solution at pH 4.5. Next, Acid Soluble Organic Phosphate (ASOP) was extracted by H2SO4 0.5 N. Finally, Residual Organic Phosphate (ROP) was digested with H2SO4 + H2O2. Four representative mangrove stages have been studied: sea edge pioneer mangroves, mature coastal mangroves, mixed riverine mangroves, and declining to dead mangroves. The sum of the P-fractions varied between 638 to 804 g g-1 in pioneer and mixed mangroves respectively. In all the stages, the percentage of inorganic phosphate was larger than 50% of the total P. Fe(OOH)P varied between 221 (pioneer mangrove) to 426 g g-1 (dead mangrove). CaCO3P varied between 75 to 102 g g-1 in mixed, dead or mature mangroves and attained 125 g g-1 in pioneer mangrove. The sum of the concentrations of organic phosphate (ASOP + ROP) increased markedly from the dead mangrove (189 g g-1) to the mixed mangrove (380 g g-1). Guianese mangroves, are relatively rich in total phosphate, possibly because they are narrowly related to the 'Amazon dispersal system. Each mangrove stage can be characterised by a prevailing form of phosphate. The concentrations of these different forms were ascribed to the marked relations with the seawater which controls import or export of suspended matters and to the wave action which controls the resuspension of the sediments and subsequently exchange of phosphate between the suspended matter and the water column.  相似文献

The organic phosphate pool of some Camargue sediments (South of France) was studied, after removal of inorganic phosphate, with Ca-NTA/dithionite (Fe bound phosphate) and Na-EDTA (Ca bound phosphate). The organic phosphate was divided into an acid soluble organic phosphate fraction (ASOP) and a residual organic phosphate fraction (ROP). The extraction of organic matter with 2.0 M NaOH (90 °C) from ROP yielded considerable quantities of Org-P. In this extract the presence of phytate (inositol hexa phosphate) could be demonstrated using phytase to hydrolyse the phytate. Phytate was shown to account for a considerable part of organic phosphate in sediments of freshwater marsh sediments as well as in the sediment of the brackish/salt water lake ‘Etang de Vaccares’. In laboratory experiments phytate was found to precipitate with all poly-valent cations tested. Furthermore, phytate was found to be strongly adsorbed onto Fe(OOH), which may explain its accumulation and its stability in sediments. Considerable quantities of ASOP were found; the chemical stucture of this pool remains unknown.  相似文献

The study of four drinking-water reservoirsdemonstrates how the anthropogenic land use of acatchment may affect binding and mobility ofphosphorus in the sediment. Pdiss concentrationgradients at the sediment–water interface weremeasured to calculate potential diffusive releaserates. P binding forms were determined by sequentialextraction of fresh sediment and settling seston. Mainstudy sites were Saidenbach Reservoir (mesotrophic,densely populated drainage area with 73% agriculturalland use) and Neunzehnhain Reservoir (oligotrophic,unpopulated drainage area forested to 80%) in thesilicate-rich Erzgebirge mountains of eastern Germany.Tot-P concentrations and P binding forms of typicalerosive matter from each catchment were similar to thesediment of both pre-reservoirs and reservoirs' mouth.In Saidenbach Reservoir, diatoms responded to highnutrient loading by incorporating ortho-P. Whilesettling, the org-P was partly transformed toFe(OOH)P. Apart from hypolimnetic O2depletion, this P binding form dominated in thesurface sediment mainly in front of the dam. Withincreasing sediment depth, org-P and Fe(OOH)Pnot only redissolved into the pore water, but alsoadsorbed onto Al compounds. In Neunzehnhain Reservoir,acidification of the low buffered catchment favouredloading of humic compounds and Al3+ ions, whichprecipitated and redox-independently adsorbed ortho-Pdue to a pH increase in the lake. Neunzehnhainsediment was able to immobilize Fe(OOH)P fromSaidenbach sediment in a batch experiment. Comparativesequential P extraction of sediment from SosaReservoir (oligo-mesotrophic, sparsely populateddrainage area forested to 94%) and Kleine KinzigReservoir (nearly unpopulated drainage area forestedto 98%) also demonstrated effective P immobilizationby Al-/humic compounds.It is concluded that the absence of settlements in thecatchment, together with forestry as dominating landuse, favour not only oligotrophic conditions in thereservoir but also confine internal P loading from thesediment. Experiments examined the effects of no-tillage (NT) and conventional-tillage (CT) and increased soil moisture (irrigation) on southern corn rootworm (SCR), Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), oviposition and survival and SCR below-ground predators in peanut (Arachis hypogeae L.) agroecosystems. No-tillage systems without irrigation had significantly greater soil moisture than CT systems without irrigation in 1987, but not in 1988. Both moist soil and the presence of an organic residue increased the number of southern corn rootworm eggs in a system. The same 17 species of predatory arthropods were found in all systems. However, their activity in the top 10-cm of soil which increased in NT systems, determined how effective they were as predators. Only 7 predators significantly reduced SCR immature stages, and of these 7, only one, Formicidae, preyed on all stages of SCR. Southern corn rootworm first instars and eggs had the greatest overall percent mortality, with second and third instars the lowest. Peanut yields and pod quality were equal between NT and CT systems. Overall return per ha showed NT, no-irrigation systems with the greatest return. Abiotic parameters dominated SCR survival in CT systems, while biotic parameters had the greatest influence on SCR survival in NT systems.
Résumé Des expériences ont été entreprises pour examiner l'influence de labours classiques ou de leur absence et de l'augmentation de l'humidité du sol (irrigation) sur la ponte et la survie de D. undecimpunctata howardi Barber (Coleo. Chrysomelidae) et sur ses prédateurs souterrains dans des agrosystèmes à arachide. L'humidité du sol s'est montrée significativement plus élevée dans les parcelles irriguées pendant les deux années, 1987 et 1988, mais, en 1987 et non en 1988, l'humidité du sol a été significativement plus élevée dans le sol non labouré pourtant non irrigué que dans le sol labouré et irrigué. La présence de sol humide et de résidus organiques augmente le nombre d'ufs émis. Les mêmes 17 espèces d'arthropodes prédateurs dateurs souterrains ont été rencontrés dans toutes les sols non labourés et parfois dans les sols labourés irrigués; leur activité détermine leur efficacité comme prédateur. 7 espèces réduisent les effectifs de larves, mais une seule d'entre elles, une Formicidae, (Lasius spp. et Pheidole spp.) s'est révélée prédatrice de tous les stades de la chrysomèle. La plus forte mortalité de D. u. howardi a été observée sur les ufs et les larves de premier stade, la plus faible sur les larves de deuxième et troisième stade. La récolte et la qualité des arachides sont identiques avec ou sans labour. Ainsi, la rentabilité financière par ha était supérieure dans les systèmes sans labour non irrigués. Il découle de cette étude que les paramètres physiques dominent la survie de la chrysomèle dans les systèmes avec labour, tandis que les paramètres biologiques influent le plus sur la survie dans les systèmes sans labour.

A major problem of the Mediterranean coastal lagoons is an excessive input of nutrients (i.e. N and P), causing eutrophic conditions in summer. The sediments of these lagoons can serve as a reservoir by fixing phosphate, or as a source when this phosphate is released under certain conditions. Knowledge of nutrient sources and fluxes is needed if coastal lagoons are to be protected against eutrophication. Therefore, we have evaluated the total pool of phosphate in the lagoon sediments, and the quantity of phosphate which may be released.Sediment profiles have been analysed at two stations of the Lagune de Thau both in and outside the oyster-bank zone. A sequential fractionation, using chelating agents was performed to extract the inorganic (iron and calcium bound phosphate) and the organic phosphate fractions. A statistical analysis of the data set has revealed several significant factors which explain the fluctuations of the concentrations of each phosphate fraction. These factors are: the time of year (seasons), the depth (5 cm layers of sediment), and the site (station).A spatial and a temporal variation of the concentration of Tot-P was found. The largest variation between the two different zones appeared only in the first five cm of sediment. There is only a slight seasonal variation in the amount of phosphate at other depths at the two different zones. Season and station are the factors which control the variations in distribution of phosphate fractions. The spatial and temporal variations of the iron and calcium bound phosphate are explained by the redox potential and pH in the top layer of the sediment.Abbreviations In principle the general abbreviations are used (see page vi). Résumé L'évolution des structures de distribution de l'oxygène (concentration et saturation) a été suivie, dans les eaux de l'Etang de Berre, durant plusieurs années. A l'existence d'une pycnocline (halocline) à gradient très exprimé, correspond celle d'une oxycline aboutissant à l'anoxie dans certain cas. L'analyse des relations entre oxygène et phosphore minéral, en conditions de pénurie d'oxygène, montre que l'existence d'anomalies dans ces relations tient au fonctionnement du système consommation-production-régénération. Un concept de bilan théorique d'oxygène dans un bassin saumâtre est proposé.
The evolution of oxygen distribution parameters (concentration and saturation) has been monitored in brackish waters of lake Etang de Berre during several years. In relation with the occurrence of a well-defined pycnocline (halocline) an oxycline is shown to be present, leading to anoxic conditions in some cases. The relationships between oxygen and nutrients under conditions of oxygen depletion are examined and it is shown that anomalies are due to the dynamic aspects of the consumption-production-regeneration system. A concept of theoretical oxygen budget in a brackish water basin is proposed.

The carbohydrate levels in the roots of two soybean cultivars (Century, Woodworth) were determined during the early vegetative growth stage. Based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics Century was characterized as being more efficient at phosphate uptake when compared to Woodworth. The experiments were carried out at normal nutrition (+P treatment) as well as under a condition of moderate phosphate stress (–P treatment). The stress situation was created by withdrawal of phosphate from the nutrient solution for five or nine days. Compared to the +P-treatment the deprivation of phosphate led to a reduction of more than 50% in the phosphate content of the plant tissue.The carbohydrates in the roots exhibited differences between both cultivars with Century generally having higher sucrose levels. During the morning the +P treatment of Century exhibited 10 mg g-1 and in the afternoon 16 mg g-1 sucrose (plant dry weight basis). This compares to 8 mg g-1 sucrose (morning) and 13 mg g-1 sucrose (afternoon) for Woodworth. Phosphate stress increased the levels of hexoses (glucose, fructose) in both varieties significantly. The sucrose levels remained higher for the Century variety even during phosphate stress. We conclude that the shoot of the Century variety supplies its root with an increased amount of energy in form of carbohydrates compared to the Woodworth variety. This may enable the plant to take up phosphate more efficiently. It is also remarkable that the Century variety reduces the pH of the nutrient medium more rapidly. Comparisons were made of the preferences shown by non-protein-fed females, protein-fed gravid females, and non-protein-fed males of the house fly, given choices between sucrose solution and either l-leucine or sodium phosphate buffer.In choice tests where non-protein-fed females showed little preference, protein-fed females and males both showed a strong preference for the sucrose solution. The findings suggest that l-leucine and sodium phosphate buffer are recognised by non-protein-fed females as indicators of nutrients for ovarian development.
Résumé Les choix alimentaires de 3 catégories de M. domestica: femelles n'ayant pas consommé de protéines, femelles à ovaires développés alimentées sur protéines, mâles n'ayant pas consommé de protéines, ont été examinés par leur absorption de solutions dans une paire de potomètres.Elles avaient le choix entre, d'une part une solution de sucrose et, d'autre part une solution de L. leucine ou d'un tampon de phosphate de soude.Pour les expériences où les femelles non préalablement alimentées sur protéines ne présentent aucune préférence, les femelles alimentées sur protéines et les mâles préfèrent nettement la solution de sucrose.Les résultats montrent que les femelles non alimentées sur protéines répondent plus que les femelles mûres et les mâles à la fois à la solution de L. leucine et au tampon de phosphate qu'au sucrose. Ceci suggère que l'impulsion sensorielle provoquée par ces deux breuvages est perçue par les femelles n'ayant pas consommé de protéines comme un indicateur d'aliments indispensables au développement ovarien.

Exudate from glandular trichomes of the wild potato species, Solanum berthaultii Hawkes, and the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum L., contained volatile substances including sesquiterpenes when examined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedures. Sesquiterpenes were the major volatile constituents of Type A trichome exudate but were a minor constituent of Type B exudate. Sesquiterpene mixtures of the two potato species differed qualitatively and quantitatively. -Caryophyllene and E--Farnesene were major components identified in Type A trichome exudate of the cultivated potato. Sesquiterpene mixtures of both potato species were repellent to the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). The role of trichome sesquiterpenes as a determinant of aphid behavior on the two potato species and in the expression of host resistance is discussed.
Résumé L'examen en chromatographie gazeuse et en spectométrie de masse a révélé la présence de substances volatiles contenant des sesquiterpènes dans l'exsudat des trichômes glandulaires des pommes de terre sauvage (Solanum berthaultii) et cultivée (S. tuberosum). Les sesquiterpènes étaient le principal composé volatile de l'exsudat de type A, tandis qu'ils n'étaient que faiblement représentés dans l'exsudat de type B. Les mélanges de sesquiterpènes des deux espèces différaient qualitativement et quantitativement. Le -Caryophyllène et le E--Farnesène constituaient les principaux composés identifiés dans l'exsudat de trichôme de type A de S. tuberosum. Les mélanges sesquiterpéniques des deux espèces ont repousée Myzus persicae Sulzer. La discussion a porté sur l'influence des sesquiterpènes des trichômes dans la définition du comportement des pucerons sur ces deux plantes et sur la manifestation de la résistance de l'hôte.

Resume 14 activités enzymatiques (3 deshydrogénases et 11 hydrolases) ont été recherchées systématiquement sur les électrophorégrammes en gel d'agar des extraits de 2 souches de Aspergillus fischeri et de 14 souches de A. fumigatus (8 isolées de lésions humaines ou animales intitulées souches pathogènes, et 6 souches d'origine saprophytique). La composition enzymatique de A. fumigatus est apparue très polymorphe et sans rapport avec l'origine des souches.D'autre part, l'analyse immunoélectrophorétique de ces extraits antigéniques, par des sérums de lapins hyperimmuns et des sérums de malades atteints d'aspergillose, a montré que l'activité chymotrypsique de type II, supportée par l'arc C, est caractérisée de manière plus fréquente et plus intense lorsque les antigènes provenant de souches pathogènes sont opposés à des sérums de malade.De plus, si cette activité chymotrypsique est révélée avec la même fréquence par une souche saprophyte et une souche pathogène, le nombre de précipitines mises en évidence est apparu significativement plus élevé avec cette dernière.Les antigènes utilisés pour le diagnostic de précipitation en gel devraient donc être, de préférence, extraits de souches pathogènes et leur qualité évaluée par des sérums de malades atteints d'aspergillose.  相似文献

Larvae of the Southern armyworm Spodoptera eridania Cramer (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae), feeding on perennial ryegrasses (Lolium perenne L.) infected with an endophytic fungus (Acremonium loliae Latch, Christensen and Samuels), had a much lower survival rate (7–13%) than larvae feeding on endophyte-free ryegrasses (82–90%). Death of the larvae on endophyte-infected entries occurred rapidly between 144 h and 168 h of feeding. This corresponded with armyworms feeding on the base of the plant, where endophyte concentration is highest. Twenty-four hours after the start of the bioassay the larval mass and rate of larval development were significantly higher on endophytic entries. From 48–144 h no differences were seen, but after 144 h the mass of larvae on endophyte-infected grasses sharply declined. Observations from this bioassay further substantiate the association between A. loliae-infected ryegrass and antibiosis to several lepidopterous and coleopterous insect pests.
Résumé Le ray-grass vivace (Lolium perenne), contaminé par le champignon endophyte Acremonium loliae Latch, Christensen & Samuels, a présenté une augmentation de la resistance à de nombreux coléoptères et lépidoptères nuisibles. Cette note examine les réactions de Spodoptera eridania Cramer (Lépido., Noctuidae) alimenté sur trois lignées de ray-grass contaminées par le champignon et trois lignées saines. Après 168 h d'alimentation sur ray-grass contaminé, les chenilles presentent une très forte mortalité; la survie n'est que de 7 à 13% contre 82 à 90% pour le ray-grass sain. Le décès brutal des chenilles correspond à leur alimentation sur la base de la plante ou la concentration du champignon est la plus forte. Les chenilles consomment constamment, broutant plus des 2/3 du feuillage du ray-grass; les broutements des six séries ne différaient pas significativement.Au bout de 24 h, la nombre de chenilles passées du 3ème au 4ème stade, et l'augmentation de poids sont plus élevés pour les séries sur plante contaminée, ce qui suggère un avantage initial pour les chenilles en présence de champignon endophyte, l'analyse en poids sec a montré que l'augmentation de poids initial est réel. Entre 48 et 144 h, cependant, le nombre de 4ème stade et le poids des chenilles sont les mêmes dans les deux séries. Après 144 h, le poids des chenilles sur ray-grass contaminé diminue significativement; aucune n'était parvenue au 5ème stade, contre 11% sur ray-grass sain. Nous n'avons pas observé de signes apparents de neurotoxicité. Au lieu de cela, il ya a eu interaction avec un processus physiologique fondamental, ce qui a provoqué une forte perte de poids larvaire et la mort, indiquant l'intervention d'inhibiteurs métaboliques.

The response of tephritid fruit flies to variously coloured sticky traps was studied in the field in southeastern Queensland over three seasons (1978–81). Three species, Dacus tryoni (Froggatt), D. neohumeralis Hardy and D. cacuminatus (Hering), made up the majority of the flies captured. On a per unit area basis, a sticky flat trap was more efficient than a sticky wing trap and was adopted as the trap design. Daylight fluorescent (DF) Saturn Yellow captured significantly more flies than any of the other ten colours, or perspex and aluminium foil, tested, although the DF colours Lime, Blaze Orange and Emerald were also attractive. There was a significant correlation between the number of flies captured by a colour and the difference, in nanometres, between the peak reflected wavelength of the colour and 550 nm which is quoted as the peak wavelength reflected by green leaves. The three species did not differ in their responses to the coloured traps, and more males than females were captured. When either cuelure or methyl eugenol was added to the sticky traps no one colour emerged as significantly superior, but the yellow, and yellow/green DF colours consistently caught more flies. The attractiveness of coloured traps declined as the number of flies captured increased. The efficiency of Steiner and McPhail traps was not increased by the addition of any attractive colour. Of various possible trap shapes of equivalent surface area, circular and square traps captured more flies than did triangular, rectangular and diamond shaped traps. When spheres were tested, those of 10 cm diameter captured more flies than those of 5 cm diameter, and more flies were caught on black, than on yellow or green spheres.
Résumé Plusieurs espèces de téphritidées, principalement Dacus tryoni, D. neohumeralis et D. cacuminatus, ont été capturées avec des pièges gluants colorés dans le S.E. Queensland (Australie) pendant 3 saisons (1978–81). Des pièges plats de 15×20 cm ont capturé plus de mouches/cm2 que des pièges ailés formés par 2 plans à 90°. Les couleurs jaune-vert ont été préferées par les 3 espèces, le jaune saturne lumière du jour fluorescent ayant été le plus attractif. Une corrélation significative a été trouvée entre le nombre de mouches capturées par une couleur et la différence en nanomètres entre le mode des longueurs d'onde reflétées par cette couleur et 550 nm considéré généralement comme le mode des longueurs d'onde reflétées par les feuilles vertes. Les 3 espèces ont montré les mêmes réponses aux pièges colorés et le nombre de mâles avait tendance à excéder celui des femelles. Quand de la cuelure ou du méthyl eugénol étaient ajoutés aux pièges gluants, aucune couleur n'était significativement supérieure, mais les couleurs fluorescentes lumière du jour jaune et jaune-vert ont capturé nettement plus de mouches que le bleu, l'orange, le rouge, le noir, le blanc, la feuille d'aluminium ou le perspex clair. Le taux de capture diminuait plus le nombre de mouches sur le piège augmentait. Ceci peut expliquer la diminution apparente de la discrimination entre les couleurs quand des leurres mâles sont posés sur les pièges. Des expériences avec des pièges tachetés et un retrait quotidien des mouches ont montré que la diminution d'attractivité était une réponse à un stimulus visuel. Après plusieurs jours d'exposition, un piège de couleur relativement peu attractive, capturant des mouches à un taux faible mais appréciable, a capturé un nombre de mouches voisin de celui d'un piège de couleur attractive qui avait commencé par capturer un grand nombre de mouches, mais avait vu baisser son attractivité par suite de la présence des mouches captives. Les données hebdomadaires sur les captures n'ont pas présenté de différences suivant les couleurs, mais la sommation des captures quotidiennes (avec retrait quotidien des mouches) sur la même période a montré des différences d'attractivité significatives.Les pièges de Steiner et de McPhail n'ont présenté aucun taux de capture différent quand ils étaient peints sur les 2/3 inférieurs avec des couleurs attractives jaune-vert.Des sphères noires ont capturé plus de mouches que des sphères rouges, jaunes ou vertes, et des sphères de 10 cm de diamètre étaient plus attractives que celles de 5 cm.Quand un choix de pièges plats de la même couleur et de la même surface mais de formes diverses a été proposé aux mouches, les pièges circulaires et carrés ont capturé plus de mouches que les pièges triangulaires, rectangulaires ou rhombiques.

Visual host finding and form recognition by the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum, were studied using four shapes of yellow sticky traps as plant models. Cross, disc, and Y traps caught similar numbers of flies. Cross traps caught more females than vertical or horizontal rectangular traps. Black borders did not increase rectangle trap catches. Discs (8 cm diam.) at ground level caught more females than discs at 40 cm above ground. Larger discs (11.2 and 13.8 cm diam.) caught more females per trap than 8 cm diam. discs, but not as many per unit area.Volatile mustard oils were added to sticky cross traps as single and multiple-component baits. Traps with multiple-component baits did not consistently catch more females than single baited traps. Yellow traps baited with isothiocyanates caught 4–7 times as many females as clear plastic allylisothiocyanate (ANCS)-baited traps.Results indicated yellow discs or crosses at ground level beited with ANCS effectively monitored female D. radicum. Main factors affecting landing of female D. radicum are suggested to be color of substrate, height above ground, presence of host volatiles in vicinity, visual prominence, and area of attractive color. The view that host finding in some insects is mediated by complex responses to multichannel stimuli was supported.
Résumé L'étude de la perception visuelle et de la reconnaissance des formes par les D. radicum adultes a été réalisée en utilisant des pièges jaunes gluants de quatre formes différentes comme leurres de plantes. Des pièges en croix, en disque et en Y ont permis la capture des mêmes nombres de mouches. Plus de femelles ont été capturées avec des pièges en croix qu'avec des pièges rectangulaires verticaux ou horizontaux. Les captures n'ont pas augmenté avec des pièges bordés de noir. Des disques de 8 cm de diamètre disposés au niveau du sol ont permis la capture de plus de femelles que des disques à 40 cm au-dessus du sol. La capture par piège a été supérieure avec des pièges de 11,2 et 13,8 cm de diamètre qu'avec ceux de 8 cm, mais moindre par unité de surface.Des essences volatiles de moutarde ont été ajoutées aux pièges en croix comme appâts simples ou composés. Les pièges avec appâtes composés n'ont pas été significativement plus efficaces que les pièges à appâts simples. Les pièges jaunes appâts avec de l'isothiocyanata ont entraîné la capture de 4 à 7 fois plus de mouches que des pièges en plastique transparent appâtés avec de l'allylisothiocyanate (ANCS). Les résultats ont montré que des disques ou des croix jaunes appâtés avec de l'ANCS au niveau du sol permettent d'organiser un avertissement agricole contre D. radicum. Les principaux facteurs intervenant dans l'atterrissage des femelles de D. radicum semblent être la couleur du substrat, l'élévation audessus du sol, le contraste visuel, la présence de substance de l'hôte dans le voisinage, et l'aire d'attractivité de la couleur. En conclusion, il est exact de considérer que la perception de l'hôte est provoquée chez quelques insectes par une réponse complexe à des stimuli multicanaux.

Release of phosphate from, and adsorption ontosediments is calculated as a chemical equilibriumbetween dissolved o-phosphate and two solidphosphates, i.e. iron- and calcium-bound phosphate.Organic phosphates play a minor role, if any at all.Using chemical equilibrium equations, the distributionof the two solid inorganic phosphates is calculatedfrom the accumulated phosphate quantity as function oftime and depth in sediment layers of shallow lakes orwetlands. It is shown that this distribution dependson water depth, pH, Ca2+ concentration in thewater, Fe(OOH) concentration in the sediments andmaximal binding capacity of the sediments. Bycomparing values of dissolved phosphate at differentpH values, it is shown that acidification, whichusually takes place in hypolimnia, will cause releaseof phosphate, which is not necessarily dependent onthe redox potential. The release does depend on pH,Ca2+ concentration in the water, CaCO3concentration in the sediments and the saturationstage of the two P-pools in the surface layers ofthese sediments.
